This health hazard and social menace is what the Left regards as America’s next great political cause?
WASHINGTON — As the tents were coming down at McPherson Square, the dead rats and mice being retrieved, the urine and feces and filthy bedding disposed of by District of Columbia employees dressed in hazardous-materials suits like their contemporaries at Fukushima, I thought of the left-wing press. You see, I read the left-wing press. Not the urban throwaway rags, but I read the Nation, the Progressive, the American Prospect, and more — I read them all. They have been raving for months about the exciting prospect of a great wave of reform coming out of the Occupiers’ Movement. It was here to stay, and for a while silly old me took them seriously.
Not the “Masturbate for Peace” movement, which made its rude appearance in Madison, Wisconsin, nor the “Urinate and Defecate Against World Hunger” crowd, who occasionally made headlines in Manhattan. Rather, I mean the-out-of-work Ph.D.s in Romance Languages or the mild mannered, middle-class schoolteachers, who the left-wing press kept coming across midst the delusional rabble. The left-wing journalists interviewed them. To read their reports one would think that this Occupy Movement really was sweeping America, rather than on its last legs and being shut down. Their end was coming for very good reasons, I might add. The Occupy Movement was a health hazard, occasionally a serious crime scene — rape, robbery, and mayhem — and in most places throughout the country it was in contravention of simple laws against vagrancy.
Illustrious names from journalism’s past — even the New York Review of Books — were showing themselves to be utterly out of touch with the way things are in America today with budgets so out of balance and economic growth so slight. Even President Barack Obama and other eminentoes from the Democratic Party sided with the Occupiers long after the Occupiers had discredited themselves. Now for the most part the Occupiers are no more. Yet the left-wing press raves on, and I suppose the mainstream media is complicit. This movement was more degenerate than they reported.
In the Progressive someone by the name of Naomi Klein attests, “I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. Every day, new occupations [sic] are growing, not just in this country. People are so excited to have a new tent in which to meet, and the possibility of it expanding limitlessly. Political courage is contagious.” So, apparently, is hysteria.
Some of it was very funny? Did former Senator George McGovern make an appearance at Zuccotti Park? The New York Review of Books reports, “A bedraggled man who had arrived that day from Hawaii announced his candidacy for president and asked for the movement’s blessing.” I did not know George was in Hawaii. Yet some of it demonstrated just how dismissive of the truth the American left really is. There was this from the Nation in January, “The Occupation encampments that enlivened approximately 1,400 cities this fall provided a vivid template for the 99 percent’s growing sense of unity. Here were thousands of people — we may never know the exact numbers — from all walks of life, living outdoors in the streets and parks…. The 99 percent, which might have seemed to be a purely aspirational category just a few month ago, began to will itself into existence.” Ninety-nine percent? Does that include me? Does it include the 40 percent of the country that usually polls conservative, and the almost equally large percentage that polls independent? Who is deluding whom, and remember the entire left-wing press bought into this garbagespiel, most probably along with much of the major media.
I have been saying for some time that Liberalism is dead. I shall even be coming out with a book on the subject in a couple of months. That the hitherto respectable magazines of the left would push such nonsense is to be included in my diagnosis. There was a day when the Liberals would argue according to some standards of objectivity. They would not push a line that was absolute flapdoodle. Yet Liberalism is dead. The Occupation hysteria adopted by every single journal on the left is but another proof of it. Those who read the left-wing press ought to demand their money back. They could have been killed at McPherson Square or Zuccotti Park, or at least have been robbed or raped.

Young people in theis country have been badly educated by government union bureaucrats. The Banksters have made themselves hated by their corrupt actions. The Republicans have nothing to offer in solutions to the problems of the country. Except for Ron Paul, the party is bankrupt of ideas and priciples to get us out of this mess. Obama should be beaten in a cakewalk, but instead is the favorite against a splintered party. The young are sick of wars, and finacial collapse. That is all the Republican elites are offering them. The young want a future not, more bailouts, for the fatcats and Israel.

An end to this monstrosity called Obamacare, that will suck the life and funds out of this country's best health care status. ( At least NOW the Republicans will finally put forth an alternative that will be right for all Americans and that won't overthrow more of Americas economic security.

You all still carry on like idiots with this Left vs Right bitchslapping, all oblivious to the fact that the corruption of your country is now so entrenched through both sides of the system that any kind of meaningful change is impossible without some sort of civil insurrection. When that does happen I'm sure the result will be East and West America (maybe with a Israeli-style separation barrier) so you can all sit in your preferred America and continue to listen to and be told what you want to hear, if indeed you can hear with your heads buried so deep in your fat arses.

That's a good Presidential platform;
Tax cuts for the rich:
The libs are down to $100K so I guess I am in that category.
Gutting of social programs:
You get what you pay for, and I refuse to buy more poor people.
Increasing military spending:
Now that is one sure proven way to spend government money to create jobs.
Deregulation:
You mean like the Obamaniacs raising energy prices through the EPA's nonsense science?
All in all I like your "great" suggestions.
Lorie| 2.11.12 @ 11:22AM
Gutting of social programs? Clearly, you are a liberal. Conservatives believe that the federal government should not be in the business of redistributing wealth to pay for federal social programs. All such programs should exist strictly on the state level and below, per our constitution. Also, if you think Ron Paul is in favor of federal social programs, you are extremely misinformed. The constitution provides that one of the main jobs of the federal government is to provide for and maintain a national military. So it is totally proper for it to keep military spending at an adequate level. It is not either/or regarding deregulation. Some things should be regulated, some things not; and the matter of degree is debatable. But overregulation is the rule of the day and has strangled commerce in this nation. As for tax cuts for the rich, again you are a liberal. Only liberals believe the fairytale that taxing the rich will solve our financial woes. No, it won't.

America's Left is a product of wealth and privilege. It exists less to redress actual wrongs in American society than to highlight its own moral and cultural superiority to the Middle Class Peasants of the Right. Despite all the talk about the 1% and the 99%, it is the Left that garners support from the super-rich and the Right that garners support from the grass roots.
Consequently the Left is well represented to all institutions of Higher Learning that have traditionally been day-care for the children of Wealth. Harvard. Yale. Princeton. And NYU.

They must take from someone in order to give to someone else. That's why liberalism is failing in Greece, Spain, France, Portugal, etc. ....and why Canada is veering to the right. Socialism/Liberalism/Marxism has been proven a failure time and time again. If the Government would get the hell out of the way and loosen regulations on business, businesses would hire more people, therefore creating more tax payers, therefore putting more money in the government coffers....instead of the government stealing from the people they are elected to serve. Liberalism is dead.
Liberalism is dead because liberals unintelligently and dishonestly emotionally prattle devoid of reason and experience.
Reason and experience is the intellectually honest wisdom of reality derived with logical, rational, analytical justification, based on awareness of accumulated knowledge understood through the observations of life and the world, used to make persuasive judgements with good cause.
Emotional prattle is the intellectually dishonest meaningless nonsense lacking reality derived with illogical, irrational, unanalytical explanation, based on the ignorance of arbitrary feelings understood through the observations of life and the world, used to make foolish judgements with poor effect.

Like Diogenes looking for an honest man, you'll spend a lifetime looking for an honest modern liberal (actually lefty - they've appropriated a word "liberal" and use it in the opposite sense of its actual meaning to describe their totalitarian selves). They cannot be honest even with themselves because their entire world view is based on lies and illusions. Therefore they cannot defend their leftist world view to an opponent without lying some more including lies of omission or veering into ad hominem. As just one example, look at Johnny's discussion of debt. He goes to Clinton (who wasn't Democrat enough i.e. left enough for him) and Bush and omits Obama's debt that's larger than all previous presidents combined. It's all "Look at the toothpick over here and ignore the Obama redwood over there"...

mzk1| 2.9.12 @ 4:33PM
He has to back your candidate to be respected? Romney might perhaps be a flip-flopper, but you can more-or-less know his range; Newt (And Paul) might do anything. Personally I prefer Santorum, but there is no-one who is perfect. What we do know is that none are Obama.
It helps to have asense of historical perspective; do you know that Arlen Specter almost lost once because he hasd against having a health-care plan? The tea party has redefined conservatism; allow some of us to catch up.
Vern Crisler | 2.9.12 @ 9:42PM
Sorry, but I believe it was Buckley and company who defined conservatism. Tea Partiers have rediscovered what has always been there.
dd| 2.9.12 @ 4:51PM
This article contains so many falsehoods, distortions, ad hominem attacks, and smears it would take the NYC sanitation dep't weeks to clean it up. That may be an exaggeration, but not much. The author deserves zero credit for objectivity. Evidently he has made a living so far off of discrediting what he imagines to be various "menaces to society." Let us pause to reflect.
The "health hazard" posed by Occupy Wall St. was about as severe as what one confronts in attending any mass event. I'm thinking a pro football game, or going to the Jersey Shores on a Saturday. Tyrell does his best to stir the reader's sense of prejudice and outrage by putting it alongside the fabled "Masturbate for Peace" movement, as if Occupy protesters had any affiliation. Talk about conjuring up a ghost and setting up a straw man to knock down. We can't trust Tyrell, though.
Move on to the next paragraph and we "learn"-- a hot wind is blowing-- of Occupy's occasionally being a "serious crime scene-- rape, robbery, and mayhem." Really? In whose mind? Baloney. So very funny that the editors of this blog remind us that we should "discuss or thoughtful and relevant comments about this Spectator article. Comments are routinely monitored and will be deleted if profane, bigoted or grossly impolite." Should we then ask that this article be deleted for its profane mentioning of masturbation, and its bigoted outlook on liberals?
It's a thoroughly absurd postulation to suppose for a second-- as Tyrell wants us to believe-- that anybody's safety was seriously threatened by Occupy Wall St. NY. To suppose so would be to accuse Mayor Michael Bloomberg of negligence in his duties. You might as well say "Occupy Times Square" on New Year's Eve was a social menace. Regrettably, Tyrell can only deal in stereotypes, not reality.
Drew| 2.10.12 @ 8:57PM
The "mass event" of over 600,000 tea partiers who went to Washington DC to protest left the capital cleaner than they found it. Contrast and compare with ALL Occupy encampments where damage to various parks etc. was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. If the Occupiers had spent any time cleaning up after themselves repairing the damage they did to public property, they might have had a shred of credibility. As it is, their lazy slovenly ways demonstrated the difference between those who feel entitled to other people's money and those like the tea party conservatives who are out earning their modest daily bread in the private sector. Conservatives have taken the time to arrange and pay for all required permits. Occupiers can't be bothered with following the regulations their kind in the unionized bureaucracy love to impose on others but not enforce on their fellow mouth breathers. They and they alone feel entitled to break the rules and inconvenience the rest of the public. Another contrasting point: when conservatives take a day to protest, they are losing income. When lefties protest, they are given a paid day off by unions, or wasting the money their parents are paying to keep them in university learning leftist propaganda.
Alan Brooks| 4.1.12 @ 2:08AM
If OWS ruins the GOP convention, it will all be worth it because even if it results in another '68 election (Nixon harnessing Silent Majority against protesters), it will derail your next Dole, McCain fiasco.
Nobody really wants that again.
Appleby| 2.9.12 @ 7:01AM
For a real good laugh, see if you can find a copy of a book called "The Greening of America" which was written in 1970 by a professor (Charles Reich) who was a little too old to be one of TheKids but who desperately wanted to join them and who wrote this hilarious rubbish purporting to explain, among other things, how liberating to the ankles the wearing of bell bottom pants was. I'm serious. He raves about this among other patent nonsense he had observed, or thought he had observed, on the way to trying to decode Woodstock, which was Occupy Land with music (and mud, dirt, filth, rain, starvation, bad drugs and crime).
One thing you can be sure of: when The Kids decide to wallow in filth, there will be envious putative adults to try to "explain" What It All Means. "The Greening of America" was once available in every estate sale and book dump in America; I got mine at the Aspen Book Store (or so the stamp in the front says) for 25 cents. Look it up and enjoy!
W| 2.9.12 @ 7:23AM
It was a big best seller when published in early 70's. Everyone in college was reading it. I believe he was a Yale professor.

"Liberalism is Dead"?
I don't understand. You just wrote an Article, clearly announcing that Liberalism is Alive and Well. I understand that it's not your Father's Liberalism. That was "Liberalism for Dummies". This stuff is the Advanced Class Liberalism. It's Liberalism/Progressivism/Fabian Socialism, as it was meant to be.
What we saw at Zuccotti Park, was like a Re-enactment of the French Revolution, with a little 68 Chicago Democratic Convention mixed in, in the hope that the Riots in WATTS might occur. See the looks on their faces. See the Murderous Rage in their eyes. Imagine what they could have accomplished, if only they were more in number?
The Fish Rots, from the Head Down. So, does a Civilization. When I look at Obama, I see Death on him. I imagine what Lenin was like, before the Revolution. Hitler was a mere Corporal, with aspirations of being an Artist. Mao was probably a cute little boy, who dreamed of playing with Pandas. All of them were just like us, until something happened to their Souls.
I know that I mention the same people, time and again, but they bear Repeating. As Bugs Bunny would tell you: "They were somebody's Baby once." Something happened that turned them to The Dark Side.
If you've ever seen The Boys From Brazil, you know that there were Clones of Hitler, created in a Laboratory, and placed with Families that resembled Hitler's Family. Then the situations in Hitler's youth were Re-Created, (Such as the "Suicide" of the Fathers) so as to stimulate whatever it was inside the Original young Hitler, that made him become what he became.
Barack Hussein Obama is "The One we've been waiting for". Not us, of course. THEM. Them in the Streets. Them defecating on Police Cars. Robbing. Raping. Urinating in the Streets. Chanting: "KILL THE COPS".
Look at HIS life. Look at HIS Upbringing. He is the Sum of his Parts. Surrounded by Atheists and Communists and Marxists. His Mother was a MESS. His Muslim?Marxist Father, ran out on him and his Mother (Typical Black Man) and Died DRUNK, in a Kenyan Gutter, after years of chasing whores.
His Grandparents were Communists, and he spent 20 Years in a "Church" of Hate.
Add all of this up, and you get Zuccotti Park. You get a Man who is RELENTLESS in his Quest to Destroy the Catholic Church. To DESTROY Private Enterprise and Private Property. He Preaches the Gospel of the DEVIANTS. Homosexuality, Gay Marriage, Bestiality, Transgenderism, and Gay Adoption. He is Pro-Abortion. Pro-Partial Birth Abortion. Pro-Leaving Babies who survive the Abortionists' Knife, in a Filthy, unlit Storage Room, where they can DIE in the Dark. Cold and Alone.
His life is a Trail of Bread Crumbs leading us back to the Past. Back to the very ROOTS of Liberalism. As always, Past is Prologue. History repeats. The King is Dead. Long live the King.
"Liberalism is Dead"?
I think not.
It's just getting started.
Teaghan| 2.9.12 @ 7:47AM
Both parties have moved left. And IMHO, that is why the Tea Party is seen as extreme. They are only wanting what we had in a party 40 years ago. Repubs are now what the left was then.
The Occupoopers promise to wreak havoc for the next 3 days at CPAC in DC. I hope the metro police are ready to crack some heads.
johnny| 2.9.12 @ 9:51AM
Crack some heads doesn't really fall in line with the promotion of freedom does it? You sound like someone who is willing to dishonor the brave efforts of the men who died to fight for freedom of speech. What an unpatriotic thing to do.
Todd S| 2.9.12 @ 10:07AM
Is it freedom of speech to live as a vagrant on public property when there are clear laws against it? You seem to believe the liberal propaganda that these are peaceful protesters which is a lie as the truthful reports of what was really happening in New York and Oakland among other places demonstrated. It was a breeding ground of lawless radicals who hate what this country stands for. They should be removed by force if necessary and if they resist with violence, they should be made to pay the price. If you want to break the law and throw bricks at police, you should have you head cracked.

Todd, you've already several times violated the guidelines of this website; or doesn't that matter to you? You keep championing the cause of conservatives, but are you really acting like one? Not in my book.
You have your facts wrong. The occupiers were not on PUBLIC park ground, but PRIVATE park ground. If you followed the reporting of FACTS followed the ISSUES and not , you would know that, instead of spewing forth your name calling like a 6th grader.
Johnny who| 2.9.12 @ 5:18PM
Here here - I wonder if the participants on both sides of this debate actually are here to have dialog, or just to get frustrations out - can you imagine Reagan or Thatcher using such language to sell people on conservative values? Carter would have had a second term - time to grow up a little, folks.
johnny| 2.9.12 @ 7:50PM
Thatcher is the most hated woman in England - she didn't need foul language to achieve that
Todd S| 2.9.12 @ 8:57PM
So some of them were on private property and that makes it acceptable exactly how? They were breaking the law whether it was on public or someone else's private property. There were many occupy movements and many on public property and all of them breaking the vagrancy law. Anything else you care to say dd?
Drew| 2.10.12 @ 9:03PM
In my city, the occupiers were very definitely on public property, a park they caused over a hundred thousand dollars in damage to churning up the ground into a muddy mess and delaying winter maintenance to the point that the costs will likely rise to repair it. During their weeks' long occupation they deprived the public of their safe use of the park. Not a penny offered by either the occupiers or their union backers toward the needed clean up and repairs. So they're not just occupiers but parasites.

mzk1| 2.9.12 @ 4:40PM
Socially, yes. This is why Santorum's very moderate comments are now characterized as extreme. And why Paul can pretend to be Republican.
But otherwise, it's the opposite. Before the tea party, the allowable range was much further to the left. I believe it was Specter who was once in trouble for not wanting health care legislation. The Republicans were forced to offer part D. This is why it's unfair to loo kso closely into past voting records; the rules have changed.

Why? We need to stop this crazy train and not only that; back it up in full reverse. How would you propose we accomplish this feat? Last I checked, Ronald Reagan has not risen from the grave. That's what has gotten us here!

I'm reminded in reading comments like this of the virulent hatred that I saw on a PBS documentary covering the Freedom Train Riders in the early '60's. In the same way, the radical right tried to paint Negroes riding on the buses, their decision to not tolerate riding on separate buses, wait in separate waiting areas, as "social menaces." Meantime, these people were literally beaten with pipes, stomped on, beaten bloody, for trying to gain equality before the law. It is sobering to see this in America in the 1960's and even more so to see what apparently is a complete lack of civility here in the 21st century. Back then, the issue for the South was the "federal government's" decision to send Federal marshals in to keep public order. They despised the Fed. You should definitely see this documentary. You will learn something that may change your perspective. The same fear of "uppity blacks" pervades America today. We need to stop ratcheting up the rhetoric and start getting down to business.

al222, Don't waste your time on little johnny, he is terminally clueless.
In addition to wanting to relive the glory days of the '60s, it was essential to create the symbolism of the encampment, in juxtaposition to the establishment. The joining of the comune and Les Miserables.

Johnny is either truly ignorant, or constantly purposely misleading, take your pick. Koch instead of Soros? Bush's debt instead of Obama's?
Von Mises Jr.| 2.9.12 @ 8:15AM
At the heat of the NYC Zucotti Park OWS, my wife and I passed by after visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There were perhaps 150-200 protesters that looked like bums pushing into the sidewalk talking jibberish.
If this is what Obama and the liberals are so excited about, they are very desperate.
johnny| 2.9.12 @ 10:49AM
You could always avoid further trips to NY if you don't like it - I'm sure everyone in the city would be relieved to not have freedom-hating fascists visiting.
Von Mises Jr.| 2.9.12 @ 11:43AM
Obama, Schumer, Clinton, Dodd and Frank are just some of the politicians that are up to their eyeballs in "crony capitalism." It proliferates in the Democrat Party.
I would direct you to Von Mises "Socialism" that clearly states that "fascism" is a socialist economic system. That's is why they called it "National Socialism" or "Nazi," johnny!
"Crony Captialism" is the flip side of fascism, johnny. The fascist are the government elites like the forementioned, and your boys Jeffrey Immelt and Warren Buffet are perfect examples of crony capitalist. They take advantage of the political system to thwart competition and gain economic "rents," johnny. And that is not rents like you don't have to pay for your tent in the rat and lice infested "occupy" movement.

Hey little Johnny, so the stinky ows bums ideas of freedom are: rape, stabbing, murder, stealing, taking hard drugs, destroying public and private property, masturbating in public, urinating in public, attacking the police and defecating in public----what great ideas of freedom your smelly heroes have
Von Mises Jr.| 2.9.12 @ 3:07PM

irish19| 2.9.12 @ 10:16AM
Here's a fact for you. The last budget the Republicans passed under Bush had a $160 billion deficit. The current deficit under Obama is $1.6 trillion. That's ten times higher. The dems have refused to let any budget come up even for discussion in the Senate for this entire administration, relying instead on a series of continuing resolutions to fund the gov't. The administration has ignored an injunction against its oil drilling moratorium. The gov't. has refused to prosecute the two Black Panthers from the last election. Need I talk about Fast & Furious?
There's some facts.
Yashmak| 2.9.12 @ 10:17AM

Under Bush, gas prices DECREASED 9% by the end of his 2nd term, from what they were when he took office.

The 9th Circus Court is Schlemiels is regularly over turned. It is likely this too will be overturned. When we get the Senate back, the Congress has to break up the 9th Circus into about 3 more and dilute the Liberalism of those clowns.
Yashmak| 2.9.12 @ 10:21AM
That wasn't a sign of life from liberalism, that was a good old fashioned case of the pro Prop 8 legal team utterly failing to provide enough evidence to back their claim of constitutionality for Prop 8. Plain and simple. It's the same reason they had to appeal to the higher circuit court in the first place, because the previous court made the same determination. . .that they hadn't provided sufficient evidence that there's a pressing reason to treat gays etc. differently than everyone else on the subject of marriage. Now, I've seen studies and heard testimony that they could have used, but I've also read the reports from the court hearings, indicating they called few experts, and prevented few studies as evidence.

"Liberalism is dead" is wishful thinking. Kind of reminds me of the story you hear every so often about the guy in the coffin who sits up in the middle of his funeral. Wasn't really dead at all. I'll start believing when there is no more Dept of Education or EPA etc.
Anthony| 2.9.12 @ 9:38AM
I agree guys, Emmett is a bit premature here, as he was with Romney. Wishful thinking about the left will get you nowhere. Action is what is required.
As far as the Ninth Circus is concerned, the elite left continue to brazenly operate and mock our institutions, with no concern for any potential consequences.
The reprehensible Judge Stephen Reinhardt once quipped about the reversal rate of his and that of his fellow lefty 9th circus clowns, "Oh well, they can't catch them all".
It's time we put an end to this attitude.
johnny| 2.9.12 @ 9:56AM
Anthony - so none of the billionaires on the right are elite? What a silly thing to believe.
Anthony| 2.9.12 @ 10:19AM
Yes, they may be elitists, but unlike the left, they don't insist on butting into people's lives, telling them what to eat, when to eat, if they can smoke, and how much water their toilets can flush.
Conservative elitists enjoy the fruits of their hard labor, extend their good fortunes to others by attempting to help them become self sufficient.
They believe in live and let live; unlike the left, that believes in live, as we tell you to, or else.
That is the fundamental difference between conservative and leftist elitists, got it?
johnny| 2.9.12 @ 10:23AM
Really - what do you think the Catholic right and the Koch brothers do - constantly telling people what they can't do - no abortiona, no collective bargaining. Deciding what we can do. What happened to freedom - if i don;t like what someone does, I leave them to it - none of my business - you can't cry freedom and select what not applies to, or you don't understand the meaning of the word. I believe what Emmett is getting at when he says liberalism is dead refers to honest ideology of liberalism which no longer exists on the left. It is a failed ideology and must be covered for by lies and deceit. He does not mean it is not a danger to us, it fact it is more dangerous than ever with Obama as President. There are no Patrick Moynihan's on the left anymore that will speak with honest conviction and do not justify the by any means ideology but a fair discussion of ideas to the public. The Democrat Party is now owned by the likes of Obama, Pelosi and that bitch Wassermann Shultz who will tell any lie and distortion to increase their power and the unlimited power of the state. Mark Levin's Liberty and Tyranny and Ameritopia dissects the tyrannical mindset of modern day liberalism and how it is tearing down the foundations of what made this country great.

Liberlism is not dead, more violence expected to come:
"Adbusters, the radical, Vancouver-based anti-consumerist magazine, credited by many media outlets for launching the Occupy Wall Street protests, has put out an ad calling for 50,000 protestors to “Occupy” the G8 summit in May.
The Adbusters ad shows a picture of policemen beating up a defenseless protestor, and comes with the caption: “In the Tradition of the Chicago 8.” The Chicago 8 were radicals who incited riots in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic convention"

Liberalism as a political ideology is dead.
The political ideology of liberalism is based on nothing more than unintelligent and emotional emotional prattle devoid of reason and experience.
The effects of roughly a century of that dead political ideology may yet destroy this nation.
Peter| 2.9.12 @ 1:34PM
Liberalism is not dead and I doubt it will ever die. While it's correct that Liberals will rely on blatantly false statements, will ignore reality that doesn't fit their world view and will demonize any major proposal put forth by conservatives rather than debate the merits or attempt to propose a compromise. But what must be understood is that for liberals, like those I know too well in New York City, their beliefs are a matter of faith no different in any way than religious faith. Therefore, no amount of real world evidence that their solutions don't work or are outdate will sway them. They will pass on this faith to their children and liberalism will continue to live. Because of economic and political cycles those following or supporting it will rise and fall with the times, just as conservatism will, but it will not go away.

Great perspective but.....the Pubs in varied areas should tie OWS directly to the Obama WH. OWS was to be their revolutionary vanguard for election fraud and pressure ala ACORN,SEIU and other lefty orgs which hate free enterprise and real democracy plus any Constitutional restraints against Federal tyranny. Pubs miss so many opportunities to nail this Golden Calf Idol in the WH because they fear the MSM and the fact that they might actually go on the offense. Rush is right. The RNC and Establishment Pubs could not even see that OWS was going to be a disaster for Bama.

The article misses the point on WHY the Occupied movement came to life. Occupy Wall Street!!! Get it? Hmmn? The banksters and cons and crooks and money hustlers and their government shills that took this nation and its economy down the tubes, and who continue to line their pockets at government ruse and largesse. That's why!!! And there is some truth, even if outlandish, that 1% of the Wall Street hustlers continue to profit handsomely with the bailouts and continued lack of regulations.
Ok, so the anarchists and naive idealists took over OWS. So they don't have a workable plan. So they hollered and ranted. Ok, they made a mess. I'll concede all of this to the essay.
But the paired question still remains: Did Wall Street in its greedy shenanigans plunge the nation into recession? And will the U.S. government prosecute those crimes, and enact solid reforms that prevent this from reoccurring? A lot of OWS protesters feel that the government is bought and owned by Wall Street, and will therefore NOT prosecute the malefactors and will NOT enact meaningful financial market reform. Therefore, in spirit if not in strategy and tactics, I identify with OWS.

It was organized by Soros front groups which is ironic considering who George Soros is. Where is any of these people protesting or even aware of Warren Buffet's sweet deal for Goldman Sach's and all the TARP money that bailed out his many investments? Did they have anything to say about the massive role Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac played in the mortgage crisis? Did they have any criticism against the Dodd/Frank bill that makes future bailouts even more likely? You need to educate yourself about what really caused the crisis Allen Johnson, check out Reckless Endangerment by Gretchen Morgenson.

Oh God, I do not care if its a thousand rednecks (of which I am proud to say I am), a thousand right or left wing people. There will always be problems in any group. With that said.
The granola set have always given me a lot of gas. Out my back end. They talk, rabble, don't wash and think its great to protest. Do we need protest? YES! But we need the work to be done on the local level. If all those people pressured the wimpy bought off reps and congress criminals to actually do the job someone (still trying got figure out who) voted them in for. This goes for all civil servants too. The responsibly starts at home. The people who sit on the boards of the companies. The CEO of companies. Pressure needs to be fair and proper. But pressure none the less. Money talks, then make it talk.
The leaders of the occupy movement needed to arrange for portable bathrooms. To police their own. if they can by 5 dollar coffee drinks. They can each chip in for a bathroom in a big plastic shack. Remember, a large coffee makes 150% more volume in urine. Then there is the smell of all the caffeinated unwashed granola hipsters. Jeeze. You will find me going to a county meeting trying to track the graft.
What they did accomplish? They showed us that the abuse of power in our country is at the heart of many issues. Police brutality is just one issue. We sprayed old women with mace and dangerous chemicals! We all need to be ashamed. Many of us feel true sociopaths are now running the country. Profits at all costs. Human, and our nations life is at great risk here. Right or left. People that have no care or love for what our country is all about. An ideology of all people included. hard work is rewarded. Justice is for all along with its sister, Freedom.
Occupy is just the start. Did I agree to the unwashed mass? Yes, on ideology if there was one. Next time it will be more organised. To me it was like a large experiment orchestrated by "interesting people of some question" If we are not careful, we will lose our rights as we are now. They will be at your door to spray you and drag you away.

"I shall even be coming out with a book on the subject in a couple of months. That the hitherto respectable magazines of the left would push such nonsense is to be included in my diagnosis. There was a day when the Liberals would argue according to some standards of objectivity. They would not push a line that was absolute flapdoodle. Yet Liberalism is dead. The Occupation hysteria adopted by every single journal on the left is but another proof of it."
So says Mr Tyrrell, but I wonder: the left wing press uniformly rejected the various 9/11 conspiracy theories, though, had one of them been true, it would have damned their nemesis - Bush - for all time. No liberal outlet here (NYT, Nation, PBS Frontline etc) or elsewhere (UK Guardian, Independent, BBC, CBC) picked up the conspiracy line and ran with it. So apparently, at least a decade ago, they "would argue according to some standards of objectivity".
Perhaps Mr Tyrrell would argue that it was during the Bush years that the Left lost its mind. I could believe that. But Leftists still rant about Bush, so we should expect a revival of 9/11 conspiracies in the present period.
The only conclusion is that the Left is deluded enough to impute all sorts of commendable revolutionary zeal to the OWS, but has enough remnants of objectivity to reject 9/11 Truther absurdities.
Joe Steel| 2.9.12 @ 3:04PM

The Occupy Movement WAS succesful in changing the dialogue in our country about income inequality. In any other election, Romney wouldn't have to run away from his perceived "fat-cat" persona like he's doing now. Long after the "hippies" and "homeless occupiers" are forgotten, people will remember "The 99%." Brilliant messaging on their part.
Joe Steel| 2.9.12 @ 3:06PM
It was a good attempt at branding, no doubt.
But, the 53% of us that actually pay federal income taxes are too busy earning and paying for the 47% that pay no federal income tax to get caught up in the hysteria.
Back to work.
Alex| 2.9.12 @ 6:10PM
while it must come as a great shock to you, most of us could care less about Romney's perceived persona. We accept that he is wealthy because he earned his money, something the OWS folks appear to have little interest in doing. And income inequality is not an issue, it's a bumper sticker. Govt taking Romney's money does absolutely nothing to improve your life or that of any 99%-er.
Johnny who| 2.9.12 @ 6:30PM
To be fair , he is wealthy because his father was wealthy, and he inherited it. He made plenty of money since, but if you are born wealthy, you dOnt get wealthy twice.
Todd S| 2.9.12 @ 7:13PM
Who cares if his Dad was a rich successful man? His success wasn't based on his Dad's success, he went and earned it himself. Not like he is a Jay Rockefeller or John Kerry living off his family's fortune and acting like he is for the common man while living a life of unimaginable luxury. Not a big Romney supporter but lets get the facts straight.
johnny| 2.9.12 @ 7:43PM
He said "We accept that he is wealthy because he earned his money" - why not read a bit Todd and get your head out the gutter? And he made his money by running a company that fires people on behalf of billionaires - you like firing people, Todd? You like to see a few people get rich rather than thousands keep jobs? Let me give you a hint - you are never going to be rich - siding with them will only hurt your chances of financial stability. You a re a fool if you think otherwise
Todd S| 2.9.12 @ 9:15PM

Johnny who| 2.9.12 @ 10:02PM
How do you know he's unemployed? He is just pointing out that Romney didn't become wealthy as the OP suggested. That's a fact. As is the fact that Romney made more money in a questionable job, at the expense of others. You seem more interested in fighting than having a discussion - rather odd indeed .
Todd S| 2.9.12 @ 10:34PM
Just admit you are a liberal trolling here Johnny who. Explain to me how he made his money questionably? You don't have the first clue on what private equity does. Answer me this, is it always wrong to fire people? If a company fails, everyone will lose their job. Romney specialized in restructuring businesses in order to become profitable so they can grow and hire more people and was very successful in doing so and made alot of money. Do you begrudge his success? Also you imply he inherited great wealth which is not true, a vast majority of his fortune he earned himself, that is a FACT
Joe Steel| 2.9.12 @ 3:01PM
liberalism is dead because their is no cogent philosophy behind it, and there are no steady values. for instance, liberals support gay marriage because it is 'unjust' to tell individuals that they can not do it. Yet they support the government forcing individuals to buy healthcare.....with the 'rationale' being that if you don't have healtchare it negatively impacts others because they have to pay for you and you would be a freeloader on the system if you didn't have to buy it. Yet, in turn they support expanded entitlements for the 47% of Americans that pay no income tax and are, in no uncertain terms since they do not pay into the system....freeloaders.
Essentially, logic does matter. Hypocrisy is the norm. And if you disagree with illogical hypocrisy you are wrong. Is there any question as to why leftism and progressivism eventually lead to totalitarianism???

1. Restrain the EPA. Right now the EPA is shutting down 33 GW of power in the US with its new "cap and trade" rules. let's put an end to this.
2. Restrain the department of interrior - lets issue a lot more permits for drilling oil in the Gulf, off the coasts (yes, even California), and in the arctic.
3. Expand pipelines - not just keystone but ones to the Baaken.
4. make all companies use e-verify. force companies to hire americans, not illegal immigrants.
5. Slash expenditures across the board. With 4, we should be able to cut unemployment. Put more people back to work.
6. Put a muzzle on the Tort reform lawyer's lobby. We are killing ourselves by lawsuits.

Tyrants much like parasites oppress unalienable rights like private property arbitrarily, to the point of arbitrarily taking the lives of millions of innocents.
Liberals much like tyrants and parasites, take from others socially, politically, and economically through oppression of the unalienable rights of others, taking personal property from others such as food and shelter, oppressing to the point of taking the lives of millions of innocents.
There is moral justification for the extermination of both parasites and tyrants.

Amazing how many people lazily buy into Tyrell's caricature of the OWS movement-- which consciously seeks to identify it with mindless drug abuse, filth, and laziness. Those with sharp eyes see the real social menace-- accurately-- as the laissez-faire, do-as-you-please mentality of BANKS and INSURANCE companies and their WILLFUL attempts to deceive others into thinking they made profit THROUGH HARD WORK. They did not. They made it through DECEIT, willful MANIPULATION, and (in some cases) skirting the laws (check recent headlines on attorney general settlements for details). And they used the FED GOV'T as their backing (FDIC) for making risky bets rather than take on that risk themselves-- they had no "skin in the game"-- inadequate collateral.
So, in fact, the very LAZINESS and UNLAWFULNESS these critics accuse OWS participants of is really more characteristic of the CORPORATIONS.
Problem? It's easy to visualize pictures of ROBBERS and dissolute HIPPIES and point fingers and call them LIBERALS. It's not so easy to get a picture of AIG and what they did.
All of this is too hard for you guys to understand in your "rant and rave" mode?
Lesson: Banks and Wall Street were indeed a problem. A culture of greed without responsibility flourished in which out of control SPENDING (i.e., reckless investment) was the rule. This appraisal is in line with what most conservatives would say.
But, you know, MONEY IS ADDICTIVE. That's why the same reckless crowd of cowboy self-professed "conservatives" wants to blame the whole mess on Obama, and go back to ruining the economy, collecting millions, and bankrupting the US taxpayer in the process--- who cares? I'm rich! And then have the nerve to tell us we should RESPECT them for having such cleverness to make millions!!
Alex| 2.9.12 @ 6:07PM
Who is deluding whom, asks our faithful scribe. The left is deluding itself, pretending that this dissident rabble amounted to something meaningful. The fact that OWS leans left speaks volumes to its cluelessness. The existing problem is too much govt in our lives; having more govt is certainly not the answer, not that the Repubs are offering such an answer. This duopoly is not serving us well; it is simply two sides of the big govt party with the only difference being spending priorities. But make no mistake - both sides LOVE spending. Your money.
What OWS really did was put the lie to any belief in the quality of public education. These youths believe capitalism to be evil, though every alternative has actually been demonstrated as such. They want free this and free that, painfully unaware that there is no free anything. They major in subject matter for which there is no market and believe themselves educated. Please.
They blissfully ignored govt's complicity in Wall St wrongdoing; is there an industry MORE regulated than the financial? Talk about the fox guarding the henhouse. They blissfully ignored market reality in believing that everyone was "entitled" to own a home; whether the home was affordable was not a factor. They see things like health care as 'rights', clueless that govt cannot bestow rights, it can only extend privileges which it can also take away.
I applaud any young person's desire to speak out against injustice, but I must insist it be the real thing, not some manufactured soapbox talking point. And I must further insist that protesters have a clue what they are talking about, that they not believe themselves entitled to forced takeovers of other people's property, and that they see that the very people they keep electing are the most dangerous folks on the scene.
dd| 2.9.12 @ 8:34PM
Nice try, Alex. Despite the eloquence of your writing, you missed the boat. Read my post above again.
"Government"-- that punching bag of the right-- was not the problem in the Wall St. debacle. FACT: most of the laws applying to financial and banking industry evolved out of the Great Depression. NO ONE believes that this industry was overregulated. No new laws had been written in years. Both Clinton and Bush Presidencies evolved to essentially allow LESS gov't regulation in the finance industry. There was a naive believe about the ability of the markets to "correct themselves." That confidence proved WOEFULLY false. The banks would have dragged us all over a precipice, had not gov't intervened. And that decision was made in the Bush presidency by the treasury secretary. So the belief of the need for gov't intervention was shared by Repubs in the Bush admin, not just the "wacko" democrats and liberals that you demonize.
You must learn to distinguish "government" from the "laws," too. Every society has the right to formulate and apply laws to its own benefit. We are a society of laws. In this instance, the banks broke laws; but more important, they operated outside the RANGE of most laws. And the result was a punishing payback to society: collapse like a house of cards. One company, then another, another, then a ricochet effect around the world, just as the European bank crisis is STILL affecting us.
How do you not get this?
To say that there was nothing wrong with these businesses on Wall St., and that common folks must just learn to accept this (and diminishing wealth for all except an elite few) is to both ignore the movement of history and subscribe to a FINANCIAL ELITISM that is out of keeping with our nation's DEMOCRACY. Your philosophy is a simplistic and naive view of the world, which simply says that "hard work" will prevail. But that is precisely the lesson of the last 4 years: abusers on Wall St. didn't "earn" their money in any real sense; they pirated it from others, destroying market stability in the process. No one can object to that? No, NOT to object to it would be wrong. Our country was founded on egalitarian principles of liberty and justice FOR ALL and that is what OWS is about!

Liberalism has been a thriving concern, at least since the Enlightenment, and-- unfortunately-- it isn't about to disappear, not now, not ever, not even when the Second Coming is manifested will liberalism disappear. so....it turns out that Liberalism is not only a mental disorder; it's also a menace to public health
Bill| 2.10.12 @ 7:44AM
You wrote "You see, I read the left-wing press. Not the urban throwaway rags, but I read the Nation, the Progressive, the American Prospect, and more -- I read them all." I don't know how you do it. Sometimes I used to force myself to try to listen to Air America, it was all madness.

When liberalism gets its last rites, will the Spectator start doing movie reviews and covering sports events? Or will the great moderate center be its next target?
Just askin'.
Ilpalazo| 2.10.12 @ 11:45AM
Wow what a waste of an article.. So you liked OWS, but after attention-seeking in extreme ways, you're no longer interested. And that ONE event makes you think Liberalism is dead.
Thanks! ... idiot.
Al Dorman| 2.10.12 @ 5:10PM
What a disgraceful and rude article. We don't need to adopt the dehumanizing methods of Göbbels just to make a political point. Yikes.

"...for a while silly old me took them seriously..."
I didn't. Not for one second. Really. And I've been talking to a few of the young dupes this week. Only casually. I actually believe a few may be future conservatives. One might even be a great CIA operative one day. Your still my favorite 60's era conservative opinionator, btw.

If liberalism is dead, will someone please, please tell the liberal Republicans this ASAP? I mean we still have the Main Twins, Dick Lugar, and Scotty running around and stinking up the Party. And we have the cowardly Bonehead and McMumbles giving Barack Trillions Dollars as play money. I mean, seriously?
Soljerblue| 2.13.12 @ 12:47PM
In 1968 the angry left and their idiot fellow travelers staged a huge 'uprising' in Chicago. Result: their temper tantrum helped get Nixon elected. So I figure the end result of the OWS shyteforbrains will be to take votes from Obama this fall.

And these protestors are engaging in blood-libel and stealing the body of christ from churches....no, wait a minute. Different time, same message.
Yeah I know, right-wingers never assemble in groups large enough, or long enough, to create any sort of hazard in an occupied area. What, two three hours tops? This is why there is less than 3% of Nobel prize winners in all categories that are even remotely conservative, why almost all good authors, artists, and musicians are left-wingers, why almost all scientists, except weapon researchers, are either lefties or apolitical, but certainly not fascist-leaning cretins like the author of this..........filth. I suspect this...."writer" would be condemning the ungrateful colonists in the years leading up to the Revolutionary war, you know, the dirty, unwashed, reeking, greedy and lazy farmers and craftsman who don't respect their betters. That the right never, ever supports any real grass roots, bottom-up movement against government and economic monstrosities only reinforces my belief that the republicans are orders of magnitude worse than islamo-fascist regimes and groupls. One nuke in this country and the mideast glows in the dark for the next half-million years. But republicans can destroy our country utterly, wrapped in a flag with bible in hand.

reason and experience:
intellectual honest wisdom of reality derived with logical, rational, analytical justification, based on awareness of accumulated knowledge understood through observations of life and the world, used to make persuasive judgements with good cause
emotional prattle:
intellectual dishonest meaningless nonsense lacking reality derived with illogical, irrational, unanalytical explanation, based on the ignorance of arbitrary feelings understood through the observations of life and the world, used to make foolish judgements with poor effect

This is why there are 0% of liberals that are intelligent and honest based on reason and experience devoid of emotional prattle.
This is why there are 100% of liberals that are unintelligent and dishonest based on emotional prattle devoid of reason and experience.
