Pushing Israel to War
When one ally abandons another, the latter is left with no choice.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta believes that Israel will attack Iran in April, May, or June. This is according to a 2 February Washington Post column by David Ignatius, apparently relying on a conversation with Panetta. Ignatius’s column came out at the same time as Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s speech in which Barak declared that Iran would soon enter a stage where its nuclear program would be immune from attack.
In his speech, according to a report in the Financial Times, Barak said, “The world today has no doubt that the Iranian military nuclear program is slowly but surely reaching the final stages, and will enter the immunity stage from which point the Iranian regime will be able to complete the program without any effective intervention and at its convenience.” He added, “Dealing with a nuclearized Iran will be far more complex, far more dangerous and far more costly in blood and money than stopping it today. In other words, those who say ‘later’ may find that later is too late.”
Had statements like these come during the Cold War from, for example, America and Britain, it would be suspected as a ruse. Such ploys were a commonplace then, each side trying to maneuver against the other to draw wavering nations to their side in the dispute du jour.
This is different. Since Obama took office, Israel has learned to suspect America, not trust it. Obama’s Islam-centric foreign policy has broken the link between Israel and the United States. There is no common policy on Iran that could have resulted in coordinated statements by Barak and Panetta.
The personal hostility between Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is the public face of deep disagreements. Their enmity became open after Obama had demanded Israeli-Palestinian negotiations based on the pre-1967 war borders. Last May, Netanyahu schooled Obama before the television cameras after a rocky private White House meeting. A visibly angry Obama shifted uncomfortably in his chair during Netanyahu’s compelling lecture. Netanyahu’s subsequent speech before a joint session of Congress amplified the clear break between the two men.
Since then, Obama, Panetta, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey have attempted to dissuade Israel from any military action against Iran. But the only result has been that Israel’s distrust of the Obama administration has grown to the point that Israel will not tell Obama what it plans. Panetta himself has worked to heighten that distrust. Last December, he blamed Israel for the lack of talks with the Palestinians, admonishing Israel to “Just get to the damn table.”
In effect, by its feckless actions and pressure on Israel but not Israel’s enemies, Obama has deprived Israel of options other than war. Continued sanctions against Iran have been met with defiance from Iran and dissembling from its allies. Iraq is apparently planning to help Iran avoid a pending embargo on Iranian oil by shipping Iranian oil from its ports, hiding its origin. (That plan may be only symbolic, because the construction of planned pipelines delivering oil and gas from Iran to Iraq’s export center are not scheduled to be finished until 2014.) The European embargo of Iranian oil is months away, and may never happen.
Obama’s actions have made the Middle East and Southwest Asia vastly more unstable. Our actions to encourage rebellion in Egypt and military action in support of the Libyan rebellion have only propelled the jihadist Muslim Brotherhood movement to power in both nations. Panetta’s announcement that we may withdraw from Afghanistan a year early relieves pressure on Iran and encourages both Iran and Pakistan to continue their strong support for the Taliban. Obama’s plan to release five top Taliban commanders from Gitmo is a major boost to the Taliban. According to a leaked NATO classified report, the Taliban are confident that they will return to power quickly after our withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said that Iran is prepared to launch terrorist action inside the United States. Iran was greatly emboldened when, in 2009, Obama’s “hands off Iran” policy failed to support the nascent rebellion against the mullahs. Last December, a New York court held that Iran had helped al Qaeda mount the 9/11 attacks. The sad fact is that, since 1979, Iran has paid no price for its central role in terrorism against the United States.
Obama’s preference for passive sanctions — rather than overt or covert measures that can deprive Iran from its ability to produce nuclear weapons — has granted Iran more time to reach what Ehud Barak called the “immunity stage.” What is that?
Immunity for Iran means that its nuclear weapons program would be so deeply buried and dispersed that only a nuclear attack on it could delay or destroy it. Israel can’t afford to wait for Iran’s nuclear weapons program to become immune. Israel would certainly use nuclear weapons in response to such an attack against it, but it isn’t about to wait until a preemptive nuclear attack on Iran is its only option.
The Israeli calculus is complex. Attacking Iran will certainly provoke Iranian attacks, using missiles and terrorist proxies, which could result in massive Israeli casualties. Hizballah, Iran’s Lebanese proxy, will launch its thousands of missiles into Israel. The Hamas terrorists in Gaza will do the same and other Iran-connected terrorists — including al Qaeda — will probably attack U.S. and other western targets. If Israel suffers massive casualties, it’s entirely possible that its Arab neighbors would try to mount another 1967-like attack.
But in 1967 and again in 1973, Israel had clear American support. When Israel appeared to be losing the 1973 war, U.S. Air Force aircraft were being armed and fueled to fly into the fight. That possibility still exists, but the Israelis’ distrust of Obama is so great that they aren’t including that in their war planning. Israel believes it is alone, and in that it’s probably right.
As I wrote about eighteen months ago in a quasi-fictional forecast, Israel’s military will be stretched to the limit in attacking Iranian targets that are a long flying distance from Israel, and are both dispersed and — in many cases — deep underground. If it chooses to attack, it should also judge that suppression missions against Hizballah in Lebanon and against Syrian missile forces are an essential part of the plan. Such an attack will ignite a theater-wide war that Israel may not survive.
Obama isn’t serious about preventing Iran from achieving nuclear weapons. In the three decades since the Iranian regime came to power, no diplomatic effort has ever changed its behavior. The only option for us, for Israel, and for the shopkeepers of Europe is to strike at Iran’s nuclear program to dismantle it. But that option, despite what Obama and Panetta say, isn’t one we are seriously considering. Left with no other choice, Israel will have to do what we lack the resolve to do.
If Secretary Panetta’s belief is as the Washington Post reported, and if we are to take Ehud Barak’s statements at face value, Obama’s inaction would mean that Israel has concluded that it cannot rely on American action in its defense. By continuing inaction against Iran, going beyond ineffectual sanctions, Obama is pushing Israel toward war.
Netanyahu is scheduled to visit the U.S. for a major speech to the AIPAC group next month. It may be the last opportunity for him and Obama to come to an understanding on decisive action against Iran. Soon after Netanyahu returns home, the Israelis will have to risk their nation’s existence in a war that is as much ours as theirs.

The sanctions perfected against gaza: imprisoning an entire nation are now being unleashed against the Iranian people. The ME is a tinder box . Obama has thrown a tanker load of flame throwers into it. The only solution is a negotiated settlement that provides Iran its full rights under the NPT. Anything else will never be acceptable to the Iranians. The truth is America / Isreal do not want any negotiation with Iran that will succeed. Only policies that lead to Iran being toast are acceptable. Everything is now set up for a war. The only stumbling block is calibrating the blowback. I would advice all readers to keep a full tank of fuel: it may be in short supply in a few months. If I was guessing an attack will most certainly bring about a nuclear Iran. Well done to the rapturers. You have certainly persevered: Armageddon of sorts is coming.

We should do what we did with the Soviet Union and China. Lets send an ambassador, open diplomatic relations, end sanctions and statrt talking to the Iranians instead of threatening to destroty them. The Iranians are an ancient, cultured people who haven't attacked anyone, in 300 years. They have the largest Jewish community left in the Muslim world 25,000. These Jews are well to do and a respected community. They could have left for Israel at any time, but refuse to do so. There is no one who wants a war with Iran, except the most extreme elements of the Israeli Lobby. It could lead to another world war and gas at 50 dollars a gal. or severe rationing.

But I don't advocate that. Hopefully sane Jews will replace the lunatics who now run Israel and there supporters in this country. The Israelis have also sold our MilTech to the Red Chinese as well. The Lavi fighter development was paid for by us, and we stopped paying, they sold it to the Red Chinese. So the Reds have a chunk of our aerospace Technology as a result.
The Israeils were going to sell AWACs to the Red Chinese as well, but we caught them in time to stop them.
The Israelis haven't been very good allies, because Allies don't do that sort of thing to each other. These are just the facts as they are. It's not a matter of them "eeeevil Joooooos." Wrong on both counts. Numerous inquiries - by the NSA, the Defense Department, the Congress, etc. - have *all* concluded that the attack on the Liberty was a "fog of war" incident, with the US vessel being where they shouldn't have been (in a war zone) and mistaken for an Egyptian vessel. Declassified Israeli cockpit recordings confirm that.
And there is *no* evidence - except in your demented mind - that Israel had advance knowledge of the 9/11 attacks.

Obama, through Panetta, purposely leaked the story to try to scare off Israel from attacking Iran, and to create opposition to Israel's attack, and to warn Iran.

Israel's threat to Iran comes only after years of harassment and threats of annihilation by the little dictator of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He calls for Israel to be wiped off the map on a daily basis. In fact, Israel only responds to initial acts of aggression by their muslim neighbors. That is always the case. Islam has been on the march from the beginning forcing everyone that they can to submit, or, die. The Israelis, by contrast, would prefer to be left alone, but, must deal with threats of destruction by their lunatic neighbors, and, by people like you, as you have just stated. Interpersonal relations between Israelis and non-fanatic Iranians are, and have been for a very long time, quite cordial. I personally know numerous Iranian Jews who, though they fled the country their families had resided in for over 2,000 years when the Islamists came to power in 1979, were flying back to visit even as late as 1998. Several years ago, prior to my retirement from the CIA, I was meeting with a senior Iranian asset in the Middle East. I had finished debriefing him on the intelligence he had to provide, and we had launched into a more expansive conversation about the overall direction of American policy toward Iran. I was trying to explain the rationale behind our sanctions regime and the thought process that had led us to conclude that we could persuade the Islamic Republic of Iran to modify its behavior.
The asset interrupted me. "You really don't have any idea who you are dealing with, do you?" he asked. I told him I was not sure I understood what he meant.
The source elaborated. We were under the illusion we were dealing with rational actors. We were not. We were under the illusion we were playing a game, which would stretch out over many years. Our adversaries in Iran shared no such belief. They expected this conflict to reach its climax in the very near future.
They also knew, to a moral certainty, that they would win.

I will say this flat out. Iran is working on nukes. If Iran gets them, they will use them. The only thing that will delay them is logistics. Once they solve that problem, you will see mushroom clouds in Israel, Europe and the United States.

Step one, the annihilation of Iran. When I say annihilation, I mean nothing left alive.
Step two will be the complete destruction of Islam as any possible threat to the world. That will mean occupation of all Islamic areas and any resistance treated with total destruction of the area.
Step three will involve dealing with those in the United States, (And probably Europe as well), who allowed this to happen. That will not be pretty.

If we go in with the intent of nation building, then I would agree with you. It would be pointless and a waste of money and resources.

I have read that the US islamic population was around 100,000 in 1970, but the 1970 census data is voluminous and I have found only .pdf images, no digital data. So the islamic population has grown to 3 times the 1990 figures and 15 times the 1970 figures if you believe these stats.
I suspect that the policy allowing preferential immigration from cultures dedicated to the destruction of our own is part of the Progressive need for self destruction, but I admit a personal bias in this regard.

Israel is in an impossible situation. It is a small state surrounded by enemies. Anyone with historical sense knows that a state in that kind of position cannot last for long.
Israel's best chance was to make accomodation with the Palestinians, years ago. But it chose not to - repeatedly.
It's best to be clear-eyed about what the state of Israel is: it is the last European colony, a reprise of the Crusader states of ninety decades ago. Those states lasted about a century, before they were eventually extirpated. The way things are going, I don't know if Israel has that long.
Anyone who thinks that the United States can protect Israel is dreaming. In the end, if someone is determined to get at you, nothing can prevent them.
This is our fault, of course. Israel would not have engaged in such a reckless foreign policy, if our foreign policy had not for years bent over for the Likud party. Without our unqualified backing, the Israelis would likely have made some accomodations to reality.
Sadly, it looks the accomodation that is coming, is the return of the Israelis to the diaspora.

Muslims love talking about the Crusades… and liberals love apologizing for them. To hear both parties tell the story, one would believe that Muslims were just peacefully minding their own business in lands that were legitimately Muslim when Christian armies decided to wage holy war and "kill millions.”
The Truth:
Every part of this myth is a lie. By the rules that Muslims claim for themselves, the Crusades were perfectly justified, and the excesses (though beneath Christian standards) pale in comparison with the historical treatment of conquered populations at the hands of Muslims.
Here are some quick facts…
The first Crusade began in 1095… 460 years after the first Christian city was overrun by Muslim armies, 457 years after Jerusalem was conquered by Muslim armies, 453 years after Egypt was taken by Muslim armies, 443 after Muslims first plundered Italy, 427 years after Muslim armies first laid siege to the Christian capital of Constantinople, 380 years after Spain was conquered by Muslim armies, 363 years after France was first attacked by Muslim armies, 249 years after the capital of the Christian world, Rome itself, was sacked by a Muslim army, and only after centuries of church burnings, killings, enslavement and forced conversions of Christians.
By the time the Crusades finally began, Muslim armies had conquered two-thirds of the Christian world.
Europe had been harassed by Muslims since the first few years following Muhammad’s death. As early as 652, Muhammad’s followers launched raids on the island of Sicily, waging a full-scale occupation 200 years later that lasted almost a century and was punctuated by massacres, such as that at the town of Castrogiovanni, in which 8,000 Christians were put to death. In 1084, ten years before the first crusade, Muslims staged another devastating Sicilian raid, burning churches in Reggio, enslaving monks and raping an abbey of nuns before carrying them into captivity.
In 1095, Byzantine Emperor, Alexius I Comneus began begging the pope in Rome for help in turning back the Muslim armies which were overrunning what is now Turkey, grabbing property as they went and turning churches into mosques. Several hundred thousand Christians had been killed in Anatolia alone in the decades following 1050 by Seljuk invaders interested in 'converting' the survivors to Islam.
Not only were Christians losing their lives in their own lands to the Muslim advance but pilgrims to the Holy Land from other parts of Europe were being harassed, kidnapped, molested, forcibly converted to Islam and occasionally murdered. (Compare this to Islam’s justification for slaughter on the basis of Muslims being denied access to the Meccan pilgrimage in Muhammad’s time).
The Crusaders only invaded lands that were Christian. They did not attack Saudi Arabia (other than a half-hearted expedition by a minor figure) or sack Mecca as the Muslims had done (and continued doing) to Italy and Constantinople. Their primary goal was the recapture of Jerusalem and the security of safe passage for pilgrims. The toppling of the Muslim empire was not on the agenda.

Far as I can tell, the Christian overlords of Palestine (for the first half-millenium or so of Christianity's existence), were hardly in the mood to hand over the land to the ancestral Jewish people. It belonged to them as a natural consequence of sovereignty; until oops they lost it to the Muslims. Who by all accounts, treated the Jews better than the Christians did.
And continued to, right up till the time of the barbarian Christian invasion in the 12th century.
I understand that European Jews had some claim on making historical Israel into their nation-state; but the fact is that the predominant people of that same area, the Palestianians, also had legitimate such aspirations - and they actually happened to have been LIVING there, where possession is 9/10 of legitimacy and all that.
They were muscled aside (a process that began well before the Holocaust), their national aspirations thwarted, by EUROPEANS who incidentally were of Jewish ancestry.
The Palestinians, like the Kurds, are a stateless people; the entire Middle East is constantly provoked by the presence of this European interloper-state. You may not think their attitude is justified, or reasonable, but in the end does it have to be? When the Muslims invaded and occupied Spain, they brought the place centuries of peace and advanced civilization. But what did the Christians care? The Muslims were an alien body that had to be dislodged, no matter how long it took.
The same logic is very likely at work in the modern Middle East. The rising tide of Muslim Arab populism bodes very badly for Israel. When you are surrounded by foes, you are by definition in a bad bargaining position. If you want to survive, inevitably you are going to have to give up more than you get. But the Israelis, with our idiotic support, have taken the exact opposite course. Very likely, the window of opportunity to make peace with her neighbors has passed. And the way it looks now, a Muslim Reconquista of Israel is already under way. You can complain about me being a cheese-eater all you like; in the end, it is YOUR kind who will be to blame, if the state of Israel passes into history.

As a liberal Jewish Obama voter I am very happy with his stands on health care and gay marriage but as a Jew , I remember that Obama really has put Israel under the bus.He changed the policy of previous administrations that the borders were subject to negotiations and that Israel would get new borders and not have to go back to the 67 borders ( including the Western Wall and the settlement blocks ) to withdrawal from all the territories.This takes away Israel's most important card in negotiations.
