“I could never live out there,” says my neo-bohemian
friend, his words conveying a profound sense of horror. “It’s too
white.”
“What have you got against white people?” I ask. My friend
— to quote Fitzgerald — is also of a nebulous hue.
“What I mean is,” he sputters, “is there’s no diversity
out there.”
I tell him there is no diversity in my neighborhood either
and I live right smack in the middle of St. Louis. Nearly every one
is poor and black. My wife and I are about the only middle class
white folks.
It’s getting harder and harder to find good diversity
these days.
I have heard such sentiments expressed more than once by
the flip, college-educated crowd. They issue such statements in an
attempt to flaunt their moral superiority, the way a star athlete
would publicize his batting average. Masters of passive virtue,
they hope to score points for their politically correct beliefs
without expending any real effort. Why not? It’s a heck of a lot
easier than getting up Saturday morning to volunteer at a soup
kitchen.
By “out there” he means beyond the metropolitan area. The
dull, crime-free suburbs and rural areas. I suspect there are other
reasons he would never live “out there.” No trendy Himalayan
restaurants. No outsider art galleries and mid-century modern
furniture shops. No meeting exciting new people with dubious sexual
orientation. No exhilarating feeling that comes from knowing you
could be violently murdered at any moment. All the things that make
life worth living for some people.
Let’s face it, I want to say. You despise average, middle
Americans. I don’t say it, though. I have to work with this guy.
But I know his kind all too well. Many people who live in cities
have “escaped” small towns or the suburbs. They flee to the cities
because they cannot abide average, small-town Americans. They hate
their hobbies (bowhunting), they hate their music (Dierks
Bentley), they hate their imposing vehicles (Ford
Raptor pickups). For all their pretense at inclusivity, city folks
are remarkably exclusive.
They reside on select streets or in neighborhoods where
there is little if any diversity, and where multiculturalism is but
a slogan and a vague ideal. They frequent what may as well be
“whites only” tea houses, used book stores, and art gallery
openings in edgy urban neighborhoods where the lack of diversity
stands out like a missing thumb. They dine in expensive ethnic
restaurants where the patrons are mirror images of one another.
They pack their kids off to private schools that 75 percent of city
residents cannot afford. That apparently doesn’t count. What counts
is that the city itself — in its totality — has lots of
diversity.
ONE ACQUAINTANCE, a young Asian woman (“We are the one
acceptable minority,” she avers), has had enough of
the hypocrisy of her fellow neo-bohemians. No more will she
patronize any place in which the clientele, audience, or guest list
is less than 10 percent “of color.” Should she find herself in such
loathsome, monochrome surroundings, she immediately turns round and
makes for the exit. What’s more, she carries in her purse little
cards that chide the restaurateur, gallery owner, etc.,
for his lack of diversity. These she places on a table or at the
counter on her way out. Just what the owner is supposed to do (Pull
in random minorities off the street? Offer free refills to
Hispanics?) remains an open question.
It seems to me that she is targeting the wrong people. The
owner of an inner-city coffeehouse has little control over who
comes in to sponge off his free Wi-Fi. If poor minorities avoid
espresso bars it is probably because they think it
absurd to spend $5 for a cup of decaf and $3 for a banana. The same
goes for the Bedouin cuisine at the local Jordanian restaurant. It
is simply a luxury they cannot afford.
Such people can only see people as members of groups,
never as unique individuals. They are forever counting and adding
up percentages. It could be that “out there” there are some very
interesting and kind spirited people. My city friends will never
know, because they refuse to go “out there.” Anyway until the
percentages improve.

These people are part of a culture that has been taught (in our centers of lower learning) WHAT to think - not HOW to think.
What has happened to diversity of thinking? This is the greatest diversity of all.
How shallow is their thinking!!!! Differences in skin color are no more significant than differences in eye or hair color at a genetic level. But skin color is their measure of acceptability?
Excuse me – who the hell is the racist here????

Every once in a while I run into one of these "Diversity" boobs.
I have so much fun tormenting them.
They start out with their usual "You Racist!" attack. That's one I hit them with saturation logic bombs.
"I'm a racist? So tell me, how many intelligent and sentient races are there on this planet?"
They usually start sputtering about blacks, Hispanics etc. at which point I inform them that as far as I know, there is only one intelligent/sentient race on this planet and that is the human race.
As they start to sputter like a misfiring outboard motor, I go in for the coup de grace.
"So, you look at a person's skin color and judge them on that? You are aware that skin color is an evolutionary trait designed to protect the body, aren't you?
People with darker skin come from regions with higher levels of solar radiation than people with lighter skin.
Since the body generate Vitamin D, a vital nutrient, through sunlight, darker skin prevents to much vitamin D production. Nothing more."
Usually at this point, the "Diversity" boob's head explodes. :)
oldfart| 1.12.12 @ 7:40AM
Another thing you can hit them with is that there is more genetic diversity in 1,000 chimps than in the entire human population.

I'm White. I think that the Whites are the best. I'm part Scottish and part English. I think that's the best. Is that wrong?
Do Blacks think that they're the best?
Of course they do.
Do Asians think that they're the best?
Of course.

Each year there is a week in September to celebrate Greek food...and Ouzo....if you dare. 4th of July is for everyone. (Apologies to the ethnic festivals not included in the short list.) Moving Kwanzaa to February would be crass, due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. How about getting Congress to move Kwanzaa to June (I think June is open) to celebrate music, food, and..drink. Sounds like a great party to me.

Identity politics is a normal and natural phenomenon amongst racial minorities (sociologically, rather than biologically, defined) - groups of people who have, in ways large and small, formal and informal, historically suffered at the hands of the descendents of European peoples. Conservatives should appreciate the long reach of Europe's sordid racist past, into the present; they SHOULD, because in most every other way, conservatives appreciate the deep roots of the past in current events (can anyone say "crusade" ?)... but they don't in this case, because the simple fact is, most conservatives are white, and most conservatives really do have a problem with minority classes in America.
The funny thing is, it is the white ethnics in the U.S. who are as wrapped up as anybody in identity poltics. Race suffuses their whole worldview - it is the common thread that runs through everything from their complaints about the welfare state (giving "undeserved" aid to minorities) to foreign policy ("towel-heads," etc. ETC.) and immigration (obviously.).
Minority identity politics is to some extent regrettable, but it really is a normal response to historical inequities - ESPECIALLY when those inequities are beginning to be left behind. But what explains the grievous identity politics of affluent whites in America? These people are the farthest thing from a minority. These are people who, given all their complaints about political correctness, ought to know better. Unless they ARE a bunch of unreconstructed racists.
Bob K.| 1.12.12 @ 9:09AM
After all your the finger wagging and tut tutting at people of European ancestry, specifically those who are conservative, you finally got to the subject of the article in the last paragraph and concluded that affluent whites often might really be racists after all.
Feel all warm and fuzzy now?
PolishKnight| 1.12.12 @ 9:25AM
What a delightfully stereotypical diatribe! Even as the PC practitioners of diversity sputter against the "white" suburbs of America, what they really have against them isn't their race or lifestyle but their anti-marxist politics. When the USA firmly committed to the cold war in the 1950's (despite all the Soviet spies in the Democrat FDR and Truman administration) they secretly declared war on their own populace and to replace them with welfare class non-whites.
Yet, at the same time, their ideal and objective is to make America into Sweden and Germany. As the author of this article points out, their "ethnic" restaurants have mostly affluent Asians and whites in them and rarely do they hang out with the most loyal democrat demographic of all: blacks.
Regarding inequality: since the so-called civil rights movement, black families are not much better off and hispanics are used as illegal slave labor for businesses but the Democrats look the other way because they're useful as future Democrat voters. The Democrat elites want the USA to not be like Sweden but rather more like Mexico which is run by a white, corrupt, criminal class that looks the other way when people are kidnapped off the streets or the police shake down tourists for bribes.
Ironically, the only think propping up all these paradoxes is private industry and loans from China to keep these elite mostly government unionized workers employed. For now.
Bob K.| 1.12.12 @ 10:08AM
Agreed!
And have you ever noticed that Europeans of Spanish descent from the Iberian Peninsula are classified as "non-white" whereas those of Portuguese descent are not?
Ten generations of Spanish Europeans have been exploiting South Americans of native American ancestry along with the Blacks brought to these area by the slave trade. Yet, even though they are White and Wealthy and in South America are politically powerful, they are given preference here in the United States in getting employment in Government and Academia because they have Spanish surnames.
Take a close look at all the hispanic/latino populist activist leaders in our South West. Most of them are of pure white European descent just like the Castro brothers and Che are and were. But let a true Native American leader show up in South America who happens to look like Chavez in Venezuela (And if he were a Capitalist they would still try to run him off!) and see what happens to him.
Grzmlyk| 1.12.12 @ 1:29PM
Said the racist liberal as he polished his halo, gazed upon his reflection in the mirror of cheap pop culture shibboleths and pronounced himself "GOOD."
Let me ask you a question, fool: Does the glow emanating from your halo obscure the one spewing forth from that cross you set ablaze on your Christian neighbor's lawn?
First of all, you people are more bigoted than any true conservative could ever aspire to be; you beatify victim groups not because you believe they are inherently superior (though that is what you claim, failing to see the inherent and ironic racism of your fundmantal position), but because they make you feel good about yourself. Second, it is YOU people who hate with abandon and impunity. Look at the despicable behavior exhibited at virtually all of the "Occupy" mob gatherings versus what occurs at Tea Party assemblies. Liberals are all about hate; it's just a matter of hating the right people.
That's what democrat politics is all about: resentment, envy, class warfare, hatred of everybody who isn't propped up by a false conciousness and dancing to the rabble-rousing tune called by the mainstream media - themselves elitist hypocrites who love Black Folk as long as they know their place.
You LOVE to hate White Americans of European descent, first and foremost - whom, without irony, you gleefully declare untermenschen (you know, like the Nazis declared Jews sub-human). You hate the mythical "one percent" almost as much. And, of course, Conservatives are REALLY just ASKING for your hatred. Christians, naturally, are despicable, inherently evil animals. And the Jews - well, need I say more about the Jews (those who do not live on the Upper West Side or listen to NPR, of course)?; Oh, and what about those Global Warming Deniers? Something really ought to be done about them, am I right? Between you and me, don't you just want to skin them alive and boil them in oil? Go ahead, do it! None of your cohorts will say anything! After all, you voted for Obama! That proves you're all about the love.
The truth is, as long as you can stamp some benighted third-worlder or American minority with the moniker "victim," hey, you are free be as selfish, nihilistic, destructive, narcissistic and useless as you want to be - and still pat yourself on the back for your moral superiority as you continue to live your life of conspicuous consumption on someone else's dime. As long as you talk the talk - paying lip service to "diversity" and "social justice" and "fairness" - you never have to walk the walk. Words, words, words. You love victim groups as intellectual abstractions only. God forbid you ever encounter the product of YOUR racist and dehumanizing policies on a dark street in Brooklyn one night. But since you all agree to pretend you're not racists of the most execrable order, you simply reinforce each other's delusion - codependence on a massive scale.
As long as you recite liberal dogma, you can be as racist, right out in the open, as you want and nobody calls you on it.
The most racist comments and stereotypes come from the left. Look at the show "Family Guy" - as liberal is they come. Because Seth McFarlane is a member in good standing of the Morally Superior Party, he takes pot shots at ethnicities with the basest of demeaning, stereotyping jokes. But instead of being excoriated as a "hater," he's lionized as an edgy social commentarian because liberals look at each other and wink and nod (as they always do): "We can make derogatory comments, you see, dahling, because we are being IRONIC. We really love those cute negros who can't do anything without Rich White Liberals giving them money, food, housing and whatever their little hearts desire."
Just don't let one of your cute little pets wander off the reservation, you vacuous, shallow poseur (I mean you, Ted R); because then it's open season on them.
Or don't you remember the the deluge of offensive political cartoons from the left about Condaleeza Rice? Clarence Thomas? Herman Cain? Michelle Bachmann? Sarah Palin's Down Syndrome kid?
And WE'RE the bigots?
PolishKnight| 1.12.12 @ 3:04PM
I've talked with many leftist Jews on this topic and they engage in open bigotry against white males and even, if you catch them with a few drinks, against gentiles. They've told me that white male Christians are lazy, uneducated, and trailer park trash and their opinion is irrelevant and, simultaneously, that since WM's are so "privileged", it's ok to discriminate against them in education even as that means they won't ever stop being "ignorant." (Which doesn't appear to be a problem for them, obviously.)
I pointed out to them that this is fundamentally little different than anti-semitism and they shrug and call me "paranoid" and "ignorant" and dismissed my opinion.
Grzmlyk| 1.12.12 @ 4:08PM
Yeah, the blind spot that occludes liberal vision can only be explained by the fact that they spend so much time kissing their own behinds, their heads have become permanently lodged up their asses.
This is the fundamental argument for affirmative action - it's ok to screw whitey because whitey screwed blackie (or whomever the victimization lottery winner du jour is).
And note that this is purely dealing with an abstract construct - I personally had nothing to do with slavery, since my family came over from Europe at the end of the 19th century. But it doesn't matter - I'm white, and therefore, my "group" is guilty. Isn't that what liberals claim they are against? Judging a person based on whichever group he or she may belong to? Isn't that the very definition of bigotry?
Their masturbatory self-adulation is therefore laughable on its face; that is the ONLY way they view the world - through the lens of various groups. Therefore, blacks need to be given, say, jobs, ahead of whites. It matters not one iota to the liberal if this particular black man is a worthy human being who has earned the job, or whether that particular black woman is a habitual liar who has never lifted a finger to build a life for herself. In the eyes of the liberal, hey, they're blacks, and that's all that matters. Then again, if a liberal needed life-saving surgery, do you think for a moment he'd reject the world-renowned surgeon on hand who happens to be white in favor of the first black surgeon who walks in the door? NOT A CHANCE. They never live by what they prescribe for you and me.
This is why Obama is now president, and why so many liberals still think he's ginger peachy; they dare not look at this over-inflated, ideologically blinkered non-entity that has been nudged upward his entire life, own his own merits.
I find it supremely ironic that, when Obama first burst onto the scene, any criticism of him at all was demonized as purely driven by racism. Now that many in his own party feel he hasn't gone leftward enough, they, too are criticising him. But, you see, because they're enlighted, their criticism is purely about policy. But because we're ipso facto bigots, our criticism is purely about race.
The truth of the matter is that racism is part of the human psyche; the source of racism is tribalism. And liberals engage in a far more primitive, unforgiving, nihilistic form of tribalism than conservatives do. Thus their never-ending efforts to institutionalize racism at every turn.
PolishKnight| 1.12.12 @ 4:39PM
One of the interesting aspects of "diversity" and "inclusion" is how openly they engage in the opposite. It's this simple: "diversity" and "equality" NEVER apply when a white male might benefit. So "diversity" doesn't really matter if, say, a "women and minority" owned company is almost entirely run by blacks and women. If they decide to make things more diverse, they'll lay off any remaining white males and hire some other special interest group.
Consequently, it's amazing that Asians now are voting Democrat in similar ratios as blacks and hispanics. I was reading recently about an Asian woman going after Chick-fila or some other business where a stupid employee wrote a slur on a note. That kind of race hysteria was usually reserved for Jesse Jackson but now it's becoming common. EVERYONE whose not a straight white male will make demands at the drop of a hat.
What gets them to run out of a room when I confront them that their marxist ideals have degenerated into old fashioned "minority" bashing (in the case, white males are clearly a minority by the literal definition of the word.) They quickly try to change the subject and even tell me to "stop whining". (note: When MLK organizes marches to raise awareness, he's a hero. But when white males they dislike complain, it's "sit down and shut up.")
Grzmlyk| 1.12.12 @ 5:16PM
Yes - another great example is the NFL. The players ar something like 80% black. Up until the mid 1990s, coaching staffs were approximately 80% white.
What did the NFL do? They changed the policy so that teams HAD to interview prospective coaches who were BLACK first. The PC thinking being, of course, that it would be a horrible stereotype to have most of the players (or, as Vikings RB Adrian Peterson put it, the multi-million dollar players are the "slaves") be black while management (the "overseers) remained predominantly white.
Now, did anyone stand up and utter one of liberalism's favorite bromides: "The NFL should look like America!!!"
In which case, whites would comprise about 75% of players, black about 13%, "Hispanics" about 7% and Asians about 5%.
Somehow, though, it's ok when discrimination goes the other way.
PolishKnight| 1.13.12 @ 11:19AM
I don't watch the NFL but I recall from the games I saw during the 70's that it seemed that the players were representative of the general population. Perhaps what happened is that even as the blacks took over the ranks of the players, they were slower to advance in management due to seniority (older players were white.) The average career of an NFL player is to his late 30's early 40's, right? So the disparity was probably perfectly natural. However, that doesn't explain the clear disparity in the NBA which has been largely black for several decades.
Ironically (lots of that is in this discussion) I often hear from whites' complaints about the NBA that sound as if they were written by the left: They tell me they don't like to watch professional basketball because "It's just a bunch of blacks playing against each other." That kind of remark if it was made in the open would be declared racist by the left but it's the reasoning by diversity proponents that "representing the market" is essential when firing whites to make non-white customers feel more at home.
Side observation about the NBA, professional swimming, and golf: When players get to a particular size that they can simply walk the ball into the hoop, or their $2000 shark skin suits give them a 10% advantage of a special club lets a Mr Magoo hit a ball into the hole from 500 yards away, it's largely meaningless.

Hey, never knew I was so quotable!
I am an unabashed anti-theist, of course. That's because I take liberty seriously. All moral actors are moral equals. We are no one's slave - no king's might never can deprive a person of their rights.
And true liberty is not just negative liberty, freedom from interference. Real liberty requires positive conditions. To call a person who is poor, sick, and uneducated "free" is to mock his condition. Our freedom is not the feral freedom of the animals. Our freedom is the freedom enjoyed by citizens enjoying equal dignity in a political order where no one is above the law.
Essential to that equal dignity, is true equality of opportunity. This equality does not mandate equal outcomes, only the removal of obstacles to fair competition. We are all entitled to basic goods without which we cannot have a try in society. Goods like law and order, education, and a common decent standard of health care.
Funny how the people who declaim - loudly and often - that (a compassionate?) 'God' is on their side, reject the political implications of our equal dignity. Hmm - then again, there might be a connection.

One of the things they are secretly afraid of discovering, I suspect, is that the people outside their own little "posse" are better educated and more acquainted with the wide world than they themselves are. When I was younger I travelled the world on $5 a day; that is, I didn't stay in big box hotels exactly like the ones back home, or all-inclusive resorts plopped down and barricaded away from the country. I stayed in converted boxcars, backpacker hostels, tiny little B&Bs; near the railroad station, and motels where the people who lived in that country stayed. I boldly staggered through a part of Switzerland where people thought if they spoke German very loudly to me, I would understand them. (After a brief period of being unable to ask where my hotel in Istanbul was located because, I discovered, it was possible to be bilingual and not speak English, I went home and studied French.) I have wonderful memories of walking along Hadrian's Wall with an English friend, and of our giggles when the B&B where we always stayed conducted us proudly to "a room we've made over just for Americans" in which the firm had installed right in the middle of the bedroom, a shower stall. Once I came home from England with 12 cents in my pocket. I wasn't born on third base and brought up in a hothouse; and many of those who were have said to me, "I wish I could GET TO DO what you have done." You don't GET TO DO things. You do them.
A couple of years after Katrina had emptied out the slums of New Orleans into the normal neighbourhoods of other cities, I heard a young Black mother and father say that Katrina had been the best thing that ever happened to them -- because it forced them out of the little world generations of their family had occupied, and showed them a whole wide world they had never dreamed they could occupy. I hope they speak for many others. I hope the narrow little Occupiers will have this experience some day too.
oldfart| 1.12.12 @ 7:37AM
Spot on about Katrina. Mayor Nagen was scared sh__less that people would not return. Some of those families located to a local city near me, having been sponsored by a local church. The local newspaper interviewed them, and asked them when they were going back. This family said they will never return to New Orleans. They had discovered that there are places with safe streets, safe schools and descent job opportunities to be self supporting. Why go back to a failed society where there one of the few opportunities for youth is the illegal drug industry.

Yes, I know people like that. I remember a Jewish cousin-in-law that freaked out when I said "I like Rummy" and a Kazakh woman that said, in 2007 "Obama will get 70% of the vote”. I funny thing is that my favorite people are the authentic ones like an engineer in Mexico who was 100% Aztec and proudly took me to his home, an Italian fellow whose grandfather fought for Mussolini, and the Russia woman I married. I could go on but you get the idea. If you want diversity you have to travel.

There is no snobbery when your jig snags a rock. One of them offered me his saugers that I declined, regretfully. He wandered over with the catch towards an asian man as I packed up the truck and headed home.

The author's neo-bohemian friend would not understand your comments. You are in the real world - the bohemian has no relational experience to your comments. They are typically city bound and have never seen a sunrise, or sunset over a mountain range in any season of the year, or seen a fish jump out of the water at first light. Very sad.

One of my fondest memories is a very early morning spent on a lake in New Zealand, ostensibly trolling for trout, in a totally silent boat with a guide (yes, I am squeamish about eviscerating the fish I catch!) and watching the fog on the water lift as the sun came up. The second best part of that day was taking the fish I caught to my hotel, where they were served to me surrounded by fresh vegetables and rice.

My first real awareness of this attitude came during the Giuliani years in New York. A chic, artsy friend was bitterly lamenting what "that man" had done to Times Square, making it clean, safe and attractive. I don't recall this friend ever praising the hookers, pimps and pushers who lurked under the marquee of every porno theater in years previous. She was longing for some mythic past, when New York City was edgy and romantic.
What utter nonsense.

Diversity is the mechanism which left-wing progressive use to displace the traditional American culture and people (sorry to all you sensitive types, the USA was founded and built by white people, almost exclusively).
Diversity is achieved by high immigration.
It's the immigration, stoopid.

The world's biggest hypocrites are city dwellers.
Just go into the hundreds of restaurants on 9th and 10th Ave, betwixt 43 and 55th St. in NYC and you will not see any blacks at all. You will see that the workers are hispanic or russian or ukrainian or brazilian, asian, indian, etc., but NO BLACKS.
Also check out the upper east /west side, Chelsea, Murray Hill or Battery Park City - need I go on; it's all lily white.
Frankly there is far more integration in the deep south then in NYC or Chicago.
White liberal city slickers are phonies, hypocrites. They vote and talk "liberal" because they need to assuage their hypocrisy and need to feel "superior."

What's interesting about that list is that not even hypocritical leftists are crazy enough to want to live in the _nice_ sections of Camden, Detroit, and Newark. I lived in West St. Louis for a half year and it was not much better than East St. Louis which was a dump.
Ironically, despite all their talk about how great "diversity" is (namely, non-whites), the cities they love to visit (but can't afford to live in) are in Europe and nearly all white. I grew up in New York City, in a neighborhood (I suspect my screen name gives it away!) that meets all the yuppie ideals! It's compact, it's easy to walk around in, has lots of "local" retail stores and restaurants/coffee shops.
I now live in a quasi-suburban neighborhood in Austin, Texas. The kind of neighborhood hipsters HATE, filled as it is with strip malls, chain stores, fast food restaurants, and people who drive practically everywhere. The kind of neighborhood liberals would sneer at as "lily white" and "lacking in diversity."
But the funny thing is... by ANY standard, my "lily-white" quasi-suburban neighborhood is FAR more ethnically, religiously and economically diverse than the New York city neighborhood I grew up in!
I went to Catholic schools in the Sixties and Seventies, which meant that 95% of the people I saw every day were either Irish or Italian. Oh sure, the city as a whole had millions of blacks and Jews, hundreds of thousands of Poles, Chinese, and ____ (fill in any ethnic group you like), but we didn't meet them or interact with them. They had their own neighborhoods, their own social circles, their own enclaves.
At my 8 year old son's most recent birthday parties, we've had black, Korean, Iranian, Mexican, Jewish, Salvadoran and Indian guests. My son has a FAR more diverse group of friends in our uncool, "lily-white" quasi-suburban neighborhood than I ever had in the supposedly diverse Big Apple.

Diversity is another in a long line of one-wordisms that liberal-progressive-radicals slander the non's among us with constantly. You're either undiverse, racist, a gentrifier, a discriminator, and disenfranchiser or the like. When asked to go beyond one word, the response is predictably DUH. The intent of the labelers is to divide and [politically] conquer by means of segmentation or segregation obviously, but again, THAT'S WHAT DEMOCRATS DO!!!!!!!!
OregonBuzz| 1.12.12 @ 11:06AM
Based on your description of this person, and some of his peers, I'm glad he doesn't "come out here". I live in rural Oregon and we have our own form of "diversity". Some of us heat our homes with a fireplace or woodstove and we cut our own firewood, but some don't. Some of us fish steelhead while others pefer salmon, and some don't fish at all. Some hunt deer and some don't. I guess you get the idea. Oh, I almost forgot, we have people of Asian descent, we have black residents, though not many and you will find, if you look hard enough people of various other ancestry, Irish, German, Brazilian, etc. Again, I hope that you friend and his ilk stay just where they are. Of course, when the food riots start, the rural areas may appeal. After all we also grow a lot of our own food.

Seems to me that in their quest for diversity and political correctness they are themselves more racist than the "European descendents" in their exclusion of whites. How pathetic it must be to watch them try to fit into the "ethnic" population they so longingly wish for all the while as white as the driven snow....laughable really. Who are the racists in their exclusion of all white? Who are the racists in only accepting color of skin as their ruler instead of a person's character and personality, intelligence and kindness to others? What a bunch of hypocrites these self-appointed moral "exclusionists" are. That they think they are better than others because they patronize ethnic businesses. To the owners of these places, they are just another dollar!
PolishKnight| 1.12.12 @ 1:16PM
Nina, did you ever see the episode of Seinfeld where Jerry smugly tries to "help" a Pakistani restaurant owner? He says to himself mentally: "I'm such a good person!" After his advice doesn't help the guy, he blames Jerry for the failure of his business and tells him: "You're a VERY bad man! VERY VERY bad!"
I love the show because Jerry dares to make fun of his own provincial political correctness.
In answer to your question, they don't really feel any personal guilt at being white. They direct that at conservatives and non-believers in Marxism as a tool to dehumanize them. It's been going on for so long, however, that they've forgotten their original motivation and lose sight of all the inconsistencies in their ideology. For example, if "diversity" is so great and essential, does that make mostly white (for now) Sweden a hellhole?

What our friends on the other side of the "diversity" argument don't seem to get is that their advocacy for diversity is in itself racist. Once you start to count and judge by the color of their skin, or the shape of their faces or eyes, you are using racist criteria. How ludicrous. All jews were demonized to satisfy the political bent of the Nazis, even though less than 1 percent of the German population was jewish. The German people, by and large, didn't even know any jews.
We are witnessing the same thing here. Go to any suburb. This is not 1952. The suburbs are more diverse, racially and ethnically, than the cities. We, in the suburbs, and semi-rural areas tend to judge people by who they are, how they act, and how we relate to one another. I probably talk to a more diverse group while fussing with my vegetgable garden down by the road, than our urban pioneers do eating Thia food, and sipping white wine.
In 21st Century America, we are the most truly diverse, accepting, and culturally integrated people since the high point of the Roman empire. We make our friends based on who the folks are, rather than any stereotyical description. The only time color of skin comes into it, or ethnic tag, is when you are talking to someone who doesn't know the person. Then, you hear things like, "You know Joe, he's the black guy that lives about 4 houses down. My tomatoes beat his all to hell, but his peppers are something to brag about."
Petronius| 1.12.12 @ 12:12PM
I've been on the receiving end of snooty liberal vitriol since I became economically literate. Liberalism is a religion. The day I bought my first share of stock and proudly admitted it, I became the "enemy". When I also declared that I identified with the "aristocracy" as opposed to "the people", I became "white trash". I just smiled and shook my head. The cultural template of the leftist intellectual snot is a product of their schooling and the media. These people are Dr. Price's "avant-roobs". They are totally obsessed and preoccupied with their self images and their hauteur is grounded in equating nobility with belief. Just like the Muslims, they live to point their fingers at tradesmen in their pickups and holler, "infidel!" They get in my face about my beliefs and social attitudes. And when I question them about their bigotry against me, they call me more names and yell, "you don't understand!" They also do not believe in individual Freedom at all. All in all, there are those who get their way and those, like me, who don't. I don't belong to the loudest mob who have arrogated unto themselves the power to police the culture. And as a result we now have none. To them it's all about what and who they like, or not. Our polity is dominated by this concept and the words "I don't like it." Social acceptance is the only weapon on earth more powerful than a nuke. And these bastards use it like the inquisition. This talk about diversity is totally bogus. What that means is we"White" people must accept deviant behavior outside of civilized norms. Well nobody elected this bunch to anything and it's long passed time they got a face full of fist.
darcy| 1.12.12 @ 2:45PM
You write:
"The cultural template of the leftist intellectual snot is a product of their schooling and the media."
I marvel at the timeliness of Mr. Orlet's article. Just last night I was reading the latest "Career Focus" (an 18-page glossy, highlighting programs and services) published, and presumably mailed out to all county residents, by Pima Community College here in Tucson. On page 9 is the story, "Are You Culturally Clueless."
The piece "tests your global workplace aptitude." I found question number four (out of six total) most interesting: "You overhear some people at lunch making disparaging remarks about a foreign-born colleague. You:
a. Tell the people at the table they're ignorant fools.
b. Tell your supervisor or HR executive what you heard, without necessarily mentioning specific names. You also explain why it made you uncomfortable and why it might make others uncomfortable, too.
c. Join in and make a remark, too, so you don't offend the people at the table."
The answer, drum-roll, is b. "It's important to identify intolerance since it can severely affect your co-w0rkers and your company. HR managers need to know so they can provide APPROPRIATE TRAINING." (Emphasize mine.)
So, yes, Petronius, the "leftist intellectual snot is [indeed] a product of their schooling." I noted also that the author of this multicultural swill -- sold under the canopy of "tolerance" -- is the director of the Business Diversity Center at Virginia Tech, the campus of which is in the wider DC metro area.
Tolerance, once a perfectly noble and virtuous attribute meaning "putting up with what is not wholly acceptable," has morphed into a guiding principle among liberals that means "the capacity for or practice of recognizing and RESPECTING the opinions, practices, or behavior of others." You'll note that the second definition "does not allow for such discernments of right or wrong and actually compels one to consider all opinions, practices, and behaviors to be worthy of positive value (as the word RESPECTING requires.)"
Few here would argue that liberal tolerance also extends to white, conservative, and Christian males. No. Liberals practice selective tolerance, the type of tolerance that classifies people according to groups which they can then manipulate for their own -- often nefarious -- purposes.
The quoted material in paragraph six is from "What In the World Is Going On? by David C. Thompson, 2010, Northwestern Publishing House.

That they would get "diversity" wrong too is only the latest feather in their collective caps.

Here in California, many average citizens have self-nominated themselves as sheriff of this or that form of political correctness. We have folks like the Asian woman in this article who have setup their own rules for “what’s right” and aren’t shy about telling others how to behave. We even have folks who criticize you for using too much water – no seriously, unless your lips are sucking from the drinking fountain or if you leave the water running in the restroom sink while you dry your hands, you could easily hear about it from the vigilante Water Marshalls.
Political correctness was born around the time of the Vietnam war when today’s aging Baby Boomers really mastered the finer points of hate. Today, an old Boomer will assure you he or she hated the war but loved our young soldiers. Boy, what a lie - hypocrisy is just another of our Boomers many character flaws. No, the livid hate spewed at our returning soldiers was very real, those of us who were there at the time can verify that.
The young Boomers of that former era hated our soldiers far more than the Viet Cong and weren’t shy about expressing their hatred. But once they grew a little older, those former intense emotions frightened them and so political correctness was born as a direct counter reaction. “We hate you baby killers” became “We hated the war, but we didn’t hate our soldiers, they were only trying to serve their country”. Sort of damning them with faint praise but the guilt and embarrassment over their former conduct spawned political correctness as a means of atonement. What you really feel doesn’t matter, it’s how you act and what you say that does. And today’s young folks, who weren’t alive during the Viet Nam war, have embraced political correctness without knowing or even caring how it came to be. Someday our Boomers will pass into history but their legacy will live on.

Having grown up "out there" in the Midwest, I worked for years in Manhattan and saw this pretense every day. One guy with whom I worked and socialized seems an archetype. Although he grew up in a classic Long Island suburb, he tried to shed his middle class skin faster than you can say, "Do want fries with that?"
He graduated from Amherst, dressed perpetually in black, lived in Tribeca, frequented the edgiest bars and restaurants (where the non-dress code tolerated a diversity of shades of black) and he was proud to remind us that he was a "public school, National Endowment for the Arts, union kind of guy...through and through." Although sometimes he would say them in different order.
Strangely, his choice of employment was a monolithic, pre-divestiture, cradle-to-grave, telecommunications company. I'm told that large corporations are the home of considerably less evolved and edgy types like myself -- not my avant co-worker who seemed more comfortable in line at the Angelika Film Center in Soho. Yet after a year at this company, dull, conformist me found it so stultifying I quit to start freelancing.
In contrast, my midnight-clothed iconoclast stayed on, embraced the endless layers of bureaucracy, became a solid member of middle management, moved from Tribeca to a tony enclave in Connecticut on the "Sound" and this "public school kid" put all of his kids in private schools.
I've always thought that was quite a transformation. Although I'm told he still has his "Coexist" sticker on the Beemer.
PolishKnight| 1.13.12 @ 9:48AM
It's rather hard to fully embrace the "free market" corporate friendly traditional Republican stance when so many large corporations have embraced diversity and corporate welfare and hire illegals or H1Bs who vote Democrat the moment they get citizenship.

I grew up in a small town of 400 people in a rural area of Illinois about 100 miles from St. Louis. In a large part of my adult life I lived in another very Liberal area of St. Louis, the inner suburb of University City, near that $50g per year Liberal bastion school called Washington University. Approximately half of U-City is very middle to upper-middle class but uniformly Liberal and mostly white. The highest value of the town's leaders and citizens which is constantly being touted is "diversity" and many there often brag about their morally superiority to other St. Louis communities due to such so called diversity. Like say Santa Monica or San Francisco they often enshrine these values in ridiculous ordinances to everyone's delight. Another separate part of the town is mostly middle to lower middle class blacks and is of course clearly separated from the white part. In my opinion the blacks are more sensible but their is a large overlap in values with their richer white nearby neighbors. My typical Liberal U-city neighbor once asked me what it was like growing up in a small town where everyone was the same and where I did not have the wonderful diversity of a place like University City. To the neighbor's shock and amazement I politely explained that I felt that U-city was the most non diverse place I had ever lived because of the sheer universality of beliefs and thoughts of a place that worshipped their so called diversity in their safe little protected homogenous enclaves. By contrast where I grew up in my small town every day I experienced true diversity. I was intimate friends with some of the richest people in town and some of the poorest and spent countless hours in the homes of each and they in mine. For example an old girlfriend married a local oil man and when she was not traveling to and from her remote resort condominiums drove around town in a convertible Rolls Royce. In contrast another friend's whole family were life long welfare types whose family get togethers often involved drunken adults having violent fights in the living room (sometimes involving guns) during Christmas. Such diverse types were usually next door neighbors instead of being separated into separate homogeneous neighborhoods. The political views ran the full spectrum, too. That was true diversity as I kindly explained to my neighbor to her shock and amazement. I doubt she had every had any friends let alone spent years in the homes of life long welfare types that dropped out of high school in 8th grade, even though she no doubt considered herself the champion of them. I thus totally share the disgust with these city liberal types, especially the well to do ones, and their so called diversity so well herein derided by the author and other commenters.

(I'm thinking of the old Mr. Rogers' song: "Won't you be my neighbor?")
I remember growing up in Wilkes-Barre in the 70's which was a classic east coast rust bucket and despite the school being mostly white, there was a stronger element of diversity in thought than in the Northern DC metro area I work in today. Poles, Germans, and Italians had both shared values and differences which mixed amazingly well. I knew every neighbor for about 5 blocks square. We had wealthy neighbors living next to poor ones.
By contrast, the left has built neighborhoods which lack diversity even by their definition: Whites and Asian neighborhoods are upper and middle class while the lower class neighborhoods are largely dominated by non-whites/Asians. Ironically, conservatives tend to generate more affordable neighborhoods perhaps because their values don't require pricing others out of the neighborhood....
