Campaign Crawlers

Hope in the Heartland

Santorum makes his case as the man to beat Romney — and Obama.

JOHNSTON, Iowa — Rick Santorum made a bold prediction here Friday night: The Pittsburgh Steelers will go all the way to the Super Bowl for a rematch with the Green Bay Packers.

The former Pennsylvania senator was enjoying a rare moment of relaxation on the campaign trail here in Iowa, where voters will gather Tuesday night to cast the first real votes that count toward the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. Santorum was wearing a University of Iowa Hawkeyes cap at the Okoboji Grille, where he gathered with supporters to watch the Hawkeyes play the Oklahoma Sooners in the Insight Bowl. When he arrived at the restaurant in Johnston, a suburb of Des Moines, Santorum was swarmed by reporters, photographers, and TV cameramen who have swooped down on his campaign in the past week as polls began indicating that he was surging ahead in the pack of GOP candidates.

Most of the reporters had left the restaurant (and the Hawkeyes were well on their way to a 31-14 loss to the Sooners) by the time I had the chance to ask Santorum about his beloved Steelers. “We will beat the Browns this week,” he said, sitting in front of a half-finished platter of nachos. “My prediction is, both the Patriots will lose to the Bills and the Ravens will lose to the Bengals and we will be the Number One seed in the AFC playoffs.”

But while the underdog-turned-contender was willing to risk prognosticating the NFL all the way to the Super Bowl, he has remained hesitant to predict how he’ll finish in Tuesday’s caucuses. Santorum obviously wants to exceed expectations, but the poll numbers and media buzz surrounding his campaign are making it hard to suppress those expectations. Sunday morning’s Des Moines Register carried a big front-page headline: “Romney, Paul lead; Santorum closes in,” with two subheads, “Poll shows three-way race with two days to go,” and “Late spurt ‘another stunning turn.’” The latter subhead was a partial quote from Republican strategist David Polyansky, who told the Register’s Jennifer Jacobs, “Few saw this bombshell coming. In an already unpredictable race this is another stunning turn of political fortune.”

It is certainly true, as Polyansky says, that “few” expected Santorum to emerge as a contender in the final days before the caucuses, but the candidate himself says he always believed — even when polls showed him at the back of the GOP pack, mired in single digits — that conservative Iowans would eventually rally behind his campaign. “From the very beginning, I said I would trust the people of Iowa,” he said Sunday at an event in Sioux City, where he urged his supporters, “Stand up and fight for your freedom.… Fight for what’s right.”

That message echoes the Santorum campaign’s slogan, “Join the Fight,” encouraging his supporters’ sense that they are part of a guerrilla army fighting against liberalism, fighting against the media, and also fighting against the Republican Party establishment. The candidate closes each stump speech with a call for recruits to join the campaign’s team of more than 1,000 “caucus captains,” whose job will be to organize and persuade Republicans to support Santorum at the Tuesday night precinct meetings where the votes will be cast. A big challenge for these captains in Santorum’s army will be to convince Iowans that Santorum is the conservative with the best chance to beat the Republican establishment’s choice for the nomination, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Arguments about “electability” have dogged Santorum during the past year of campaigning, as first one candidate and then another took their turns as the GOP front-runner. When Texas Gov. Rick Perry joined the field in August, he quickly zoomed ahead of Romney before tumbling downward after a series of bad debate performances. Perry’s supporters argued — and still do argue — that their candidate’s economic record in Texas and his strong fundraising ability makes him the best alternative to Romney. That argument will be hard to sustain if, as polls currently indicate, Perry finishes as far back as fifth place in Iowa, where he has far outspent his rivals, airing TV ads in an attempt to recover his lost front-runner status. A similar problem confronts former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, whose poll numbers zoomed upward in November only to come crashing down under a December blizzard of Iowa attack ads from Romney, Perry, and Texas Rep. Ron Paul. Despite their decline in the polls, however, both Perry and Gingrich are still within just a few points of third place — behind Romney and Paul — and it is possible that they may yet wrestle from Santorum’s grasp one of the coveted “three tickets out of Iowa,” as campaign-watchers describe the Hawkeye State’s role in winnowing the field of presidential contenders.

If the numbers in the final Des Moines Register poll are accurate, however, Santorum’s closing surge may be strong enough to vault him into second place, ahead of Paul — a result which would turn the “electability” argument on its head. How can Gingrich and Perry’s advocates claim that they are credible alternatives to Romney, if they can’t even beat a low-budget underdog campaign like Santorum’s? And what does it say for the vaunted superiority of those other campaigns that they failed to realize Santorum was moving ahead here until it was too late for them to respond effectively? The same might be said for another Republican candidate who has banked heavily on Iowa, Rep. Michele Bachmann. At her headquarters in Urbandale, Bachmann’s campaign on Friday was still distributing a slick full-color flyer promoting her as a “consistent conservative.” The flyer contrasts her record to Romney, Perry, and Gingrich, but doesn’t mention either Santorum or Paul. Craig Robinson of the influential IowaRepublican.com website said Sunday that the Bachmann flyer was probably printed before anyone realized that Paul and Santorum would be top contenders here. Similarly, when the Perry campaign went on the attack here against Santorum last week — reportedly after their own internal polling showed the Pennsylvanian pulling away — they could only use a radio ad, because it was too late to produce and book time for a TV commercial.

Meanwhile, the Santorum campaign issued their own TV ad making their closing argument to Iowans: “Who has the best chance to beat Obama? Rick Santorum,” the ad’s narrator says, describing him as a “full-spectrum conservative” who has “more foreign policy credentials than any candidate,” offering “our best chance to take back America.” This is the message that Santorum hopes will give him the final push he needs on Tuesday — and beyond. His new commercial will also begin airing this week in New Hampshire, the campaign announced Saturday, sending a signal that they believe voters in the Hawkeye State will give them a chance to take their fight forward, and ask Americans to join the fight that began here in the heartland.

The winner in Iowa should be worried. The last winner wasn’t the nominee. Maybe they are all fighting for first place with the hope of getting their own TV show on FOX.

Jack in Wi.| 1.2.12 @ 9:33PM

Ha ha ha. First they pushed Palin, Trump, Bachman, Cain, Gingrich, and now they desperatly push the dumbest and worst of them all Sanctimonious Santorm. The so called prolifer, chickenhawk who wants to bomb us into a world war with the whole Muslim world and China. Ron Paul is the only one who can get the votes of Independents. The young, and disaffected Democrats. He also is by far the best pro-life spokesman to ever run for the Presidency. Santorum is sellout to the Israeli lobby who puts Israel over life any day. He endorsed the Lobby favorite Arlen Spector over the a real prolifer. Tommey. He is unelectable even in Pennsylvania. The only thing good about Santorum is that he will put an end to Perry, Bachman, and Gingrich.

I have been a pro-life activist for 30 years and at one time was the biggest contributor to prolife activities in the state of Wi. I will never vote for someone like Santorum, who has always been a sellout to the war lobbies.

Vern Crisler | 1.3.12 @ 1:03AM

Who pushed Palin, Trump, et al? Palin was never in the race. Trump was just interesting because he was a critic of Obama. Ron Paul has no chance to win. Anyone who wants to go back to the pacifist, isolationist attitudes of the pre-WW2 years has learned nothing from history: international bullies are encouraged by weakness.

I still think Newt's the best, but his failure to punch back against his attackers early on cost him greatly. Hopefully, he's learned he can't run an "Olympian" campaign, sitting high on a mountaintop trying to be above it all.

When the Obama machine gets going during the general election, aided by its media allies, Newt or whoever the nominee is, will have to be as tough as nails, and fight every inch of ground all the way.

Kade| 1.2.12 @ 7:32AM

Santorum’s record under Bush is not conservative unless you want to label him a big government conservative. He also gets a D for immigration from Numbers USA. He opposed E-verify and advocates more H1-B Visas, just another liberal globalist posing as a conservative during election time.

And Rick also supported partial-birth advocate & super-liberal Arlen Specter over pro-life conservative Pat Toomey -- Party over moral principles for Rick, he cannot be trusted.

The problem and turmoil for the GOP field is that they are all talk conservative to fool the stupid base but are RINOs at heart. And the talk-radio guys perpetuate this deception by constantly labeling liberal Republicans as conservative, thus the GOP is now mostly a party of RINOs, not much different then the Dems.

Looks like a Third Party candidate might emerge from these primary ashes. I hope it is pro-American Trump; at least I will have a choice.

Timothy L. Pennell| 1.2.12 @ 7:50AM

No, you won't. If you're that STUPID, that you would vote for a 3rd Party Candidate, NOW, while this Country is at the precipice of Civil War? And, you hope it's Donald Trump?

Maybe it's time you stuck to Cartoons. Maybe Crayons, and a Colouring Books?

Is "Kade", even your name? Cause you sound so STUPID, maybe it's Kate, or Karl, or Eddy, or Josephine, and you just spelled it wrong?

THIS is our biggest problem, come November. Idiots who can't even spell their own names.

Purp| 1.2.12 @ 8:04AM

Timothy L. Pennell| 1.2.12 @ 10:46AM

The Standard Liberal Puke response: Are you off your Meds.

I notice that only the LEFT uses that term. MEDS.
Now, why would ALL OF THEM use that specific Word? Let's look in to that, shall we?

Not too long a go a Study was made that determined that, roughly 20% 0f Americans suffered from a Mental Illness.

Gallup has determined that 20% of Voters, call themselves: Liberal. And, in the 2008 Election, "Roughly" 20% of the population Voted for Obama.

Therein lies the frequency of the Term: Off your Meds, comes from. Apparently, it really does 'Take one to know one."

Pathetic.

Come back when you grow up.

Kade| 1.2.12 @ 9:23AM

Well, I do agree that our country is at a tipping point but that is due to liberal presidents Bush Sr., Clinton, Bush W. and Obama and both Parties selling out America.

Trump’s, message of a strong military and rebuilding America instead of China resonates with me and many patriots, but I admit I would have to hear more of him on other issues – but so far these are big issues for me.

And I like the fact that he not a bought off career politician and loves America. The last guy I believe had those qualities was a guy named Ronnie and man do we need him now.

richard mcenroe | 1.2.12 @ 10:27AM

He opposed e-verify because it was stuck in that wretched McCain Amnesty bill. It was the right call for that vote.

Kade| 1.2.12 @ 11:17AM

Rick’s history prior to running against Casey was always lenient on immigration policy and I never remember him advocating E-Verify or speaking against Bush’s comprehensive amnesty plan-- Numbers USA did not give him a D rating for no reason. In fact Rick supported most of Bush’s liberal policies, including massive expansion of government.

And ask yourself this question: if you are a pro-life conservative and believed it was murder would you have campaigned vigorously for militant pro-choice Arlen Specter against a pro-life candidate in a razor close primary?

Vlady| 1.3.12 @ 10:08AM

Actually, Santorum advocated E-verify, but ended up voting against the bill that contained it because he believed it would grant amnesty.

In his own words, replying to Ann Coulter: "Why would Ann Coulter criticize me for voting against the McCain-Kennedy immigration bill? I mean, Ann, should I have voted for amnesty? Should I have voted for comprehensive immigration reform? Because if that's what you're saying, then, doesn't sound like you're the real conservative here. I think when Jim DeMint and every conservative in the United States Senate voted against the McCain-Kennedy bill -- yes, we voted against E-Verify, but we voted against a pretty bad bill that I think, at least you said you were against."

Why did Trump give $50,000 to Rahm Emanuel's campaign for Mayor of Chicago?...
http://www.nationalreview.com/.....ina-trinko
Looks to me like Trump wants to be the "Ross Perot" of 2012....

Kade| 1.2.12 @ 11:26AM

Trump probably supported Emmanuel fur the price of doing business, nevertheless I do not like it. But he would be a strong pro-American leader, which is desperately needed as America rapidly sinks.

Ross Perot may have won if he did not first drop out and he was dead right about Clinton/Gore’s NAFTA sellout. Besides we are in different times where much of the electorate believes that both Parties are sellouts-- Trump could win in this environment, especially if Flip Romney is our nominee.

BackToBasics| 1.2.12 @ 3:18PM

You are right about Santorum. He's very soft on illegal immigration. He's in with the "Have-a-heart"-lie concerning illegal immigration. I heard enough of that under Bush II.

BackToBasics| 1.2.12 @ 4:01PM

But I'll vote for him over Obam if that is my choice.

Timothy L. Pennell| 1.2.12 @ 7:37AM

If I'm Rick Santorum, and I come in 2nd or 3rd? I am seriously talking to Michelle Bachmann about throwing her support to me. I'm offering her the Veep slot. Period. In my opinion, it's that, or a guy who thinks a Single Payer Government Health Care Plan is a GOOD IDEA, we need to get on board with the whole Man Made Global Warming thing, and that Liberal Judges are "Okay by me", if it's just easier that way.

"Arguments about Electability have dogged Santorum during the past year of electability". Was HUSSEIN "Electable"? The Marxist Coke Sniffing, Chain Smoking, Marxist/Muslim, Street Agitator, who's whole life was a Who's Who of White Haters, Jew Haters, America Haters, Domestic Terrorists, PLO Terrorist Recruiters, Communists, Marxists, Maoists, and Anarchists? Was he ELECTABLE?
Did I mention that he went to a White Hating/Jew Hating/America Hating, Black Liberation Theology HATE CHURCH? Did I mention that all of his Pertinent Information is SEALED in a Vault, in "ASIA"? And that, EVERYBODY knew it, and they voted for him anyway?

I'm talking to YOU, Peggy Noonan! I'm talking to YOU, Mort Zuckerman. YOU, Wall Street Journal. Shut Up! Your choice of Obama, in 2008, was the equivalent of choosing Barabbas, over JESUS, when they were both offered up by Pilate. And, that goes double for Karl Rove, who did NOTHING, as his President was assailed, on a Daily Basis, by the SCUM of the Earth, on the Left. He kept his mouth shut. Do us all a favour, and Shut It, now. Same with Kristal. Same with Will. Same with all of the "Conservatives" who have been lured away from the Conservative Path, by Money and Power. You don't speak for us. We don't need you. We never did.

In my opinion, Gingrich hasn't got a chance. Romney has bludgeoned him with a million kitchen sinks. And, if he hadn't, President 1%, would have done it, with his Fat Cat, Millionaire and Billionaire WAR CHEST, and an Adoring Media, only too anxious, to help their Lover.

Ron Paul. aka "Extra. Extra. Read all about it. Kill a Black Man, and hide the body. Watch out for those Dirty Jews. Get your Newsletter, right here. Extra. Extra." They would eat him up, and spit him out, in a week. He'd get 2 Votes. And you already know who those 2 idiots, are.

Rick Perry? Is he even still in the Race?

Huntsman has shown himself to be closer to his Former Boss, than to you and me. "Iowa is for picking Corn." Yep. Truly a Man of the People. Peggy Noonan may have found her guy, this time around?

And, Michelle? Her Campaign Chief has already left her sinking ship. Yet, she is actually in a good position to be an obvious choice for V.P.

She's from a State that we need. She's a Gal. And this is a time for 1sts, I believe. We've already had the 1st Mulatto/Muslim President, who was raised in Muslim Schools and Mosques, in Indonesia. We have the 1st Certifiable Moron Vice President who believes that "JOBS" is a 3 letter word, asks people in Wheelchairs to "Stand Up", and likes his Boss, because he's "Clean and Articulate, without having that "Negro Dialect" that all the other "NEGROS" have.

We've had the 1st RAPIST. The 1st President to lose a Court Case, where he was charged with Pulling down his pants, and EXPOSING HIMSELF, to a woman he didn't know. The 1st president IMPEACHED, while in Office. (or was he the 2nd?) The 1st President to LIE to a Grand Jury. The 1st President to Lose his Law License for giving False and Misleading Information to a Grand Jury. The 1st President to use a young Intern as a Cigar Humidor, and a DNA Collection Dish.

We've had the 1st former Vice President, lose a Presidential Election, NOT because "Florida was stolen!", but because he couldn't win HIS OWN STATE.

Maybe it's time for the 1st Woman Vice President?

"Yeah. But then Obama will pick Hillary!"
Let him. This ain't 1996. Barack Hussein Obama/Barry Soetoro/Abu Hussain has done what Leftists always do. He has taken Advantage of a Crisis, to push through a Socialist Agenda, that has done what Socialism always does. It has destroyed this Country. It doesn't matter who he picks. HIS NAME will be at the top of the ticket. And, besides. She's a PIG. And, a Muslim and a PIG?

I don't know.
Is that even Kosher?

Purp| 1.2.12 @ 8:05AM

I'll take Santorum over O any day. Hell, RuPaul would get 3 votes, because even though his foreign policy is dangerous, and his supporters are lunatic, wife-beating, dope-smoking, Jew-haters, there won't be much of the country left if Obama is reelected.

The winner must have a strong resonating message for the entire Nation not Iowa alone. This focus on Iowa as a kind of end all or be all is destructive. Fine let Iowans or whoever they are who vote in the cauci vote and so we have THEIR results, But I think that those who are registered Republicans who vote in primaries should have the more important say. Fmr. Senior Aide, US Cong. Ron Paul, 1997 – 2003
Campaign Coordinator, Ron Paul for Congress, 1995/96
National Organizer, Draft Ron Paul for President, 1991/92
Travel Aide/Personal Asst. Ron Paul, Libertarian for President
1987/88

I have been asked by various media the last few days for my comments, view of the current situation regarding my former boss Ron Paul, as he runs for the presidency on the Republican ticket.

I’ve noticed in some media that my words have been twisted and used for an agenda from both sides. And I wish to set the record straight with media that I trust and know will get the story right: conservative/libertarian-conservative bloggers.

Is Ron Paul a “racist.” In short, No. I worked for the man for 12 years, pretty consistently. I never heard a racist word expressed towards Blacks or Jews come out of his mouth. Not once. And understand, I was his close personal assistant. It’s safe to say that I was with him on the campaign trail more than any other individual, whether it be traveling to Fairbanks, Alaska or Boston, Massachusetts in the presidential race, or across the congressional district to San Antonio or Corpus Christi, Texas.

He has frequently hired blacks for his office staff, starting as early as 1988 for the Libertarian campaign. He has also hired many Hispanics, including his current District staffer Dianna Gilbert-Kile.

Is Ron Paul an Anti-Semite? Absolutely No. As a Jew, (half on my mother’s side), I can categorically say that I never heard anything out of his mouth, in hundreds of speeches I listened too over the years, or in my personal presence that could be called, “Anti-Semite.” No slurs. No derogatory remarks. "

I understand that you are a one man advertising campaign for Ron Paul, and I understand your frustration at the racist/anti-semite brouhaha, but that is not where my chief objections lie.
There is a fine line between saying we should not get embroiled in other peoples' quarrels and blaming America for those quarrels - Ron Paul crosses the line.
There is a not-so-fine line between anti-interventionism and no defense - in today's world, we cannot afford to be without foreign bases for our men, aircraft, and fleet: I believe we can significantly reduce our footprint overseas, but we need to be able to project credible force so that an aggressor has reason to believe he will suffer immediate and serious damage. Ron Paul crosses that line.
When dealing with truly evil players, there is a bright line between staring them down and appeasing them - Ron Paul and Obama are both on the wrong side of that line.

Tell It ToThe CIA, The Department of Defense And The 9/11 Commission,Who Agree With The CIA's Michael Scheuer And Dr.Ron Paul.

" Michael Scheuer, who was the head analyst at the CIA’s bin Laden unit, Alec Station, and authored the books Through Our Enemies Eyes and Imperial Hubris, said “I thought Mr. Paul captured it the other night exactly correctly. This war is dangerous to America because it’s based, not on gender equality, as Mr. Giuliani suggested, or any other kind of freedom, but simply because of what we do in the Islamic World because ‘we’re over there,’ basically, as Mr. Paul said in the debate.”

Scheuer also agreed with Dr. Paul’s statement in the debate that the war in Iraq was a diversion from capturing or killing Osama bin Laden and that bin Laden was “delighted” that the U.S. is occupying Iraq as it has become a training ground and recruiting tool for new jihadists joining the movement."

Robo-Clint is back to the selective editing. Dondero goes on to say that Paul believes Israel should be abandoned to the Arabs, it's just not worth the effort to support them.
The stated goal of the Arabs for the last 63 years, since the creation of the modern day State of Israel, has been to "drive the Jews into the Sea".

Do we want a President who would openly welcome that? His most fervent supporter here most certainly do.

Clint| 1.2.12 @ 10:00AM

Dr.Ron Paul,
" While President Obama’s demand that Israel
make hard concessions in her border conflicts may very well be in her
long-term interest, only Israel can make that determination on her own,
without pressure from the United States or coercion by the United
Nations.

“Unlike this President, I do not believe it is our place to dictate how
Israel runs her affairs. There can only be peace in the region if those
sides work out their differences among one another. We should respect
Israel’s sovereignty and not try to dictate her policy from Washington."

Ron fired him and Eric hasn't gotten over it yet, this being 5 years ago.

He lies about most things.
He supposedly knows 15 different languages but got caught in a lie of when he learned Spanish.

He was supposed to run against Ron Paul, but dropped out of the race when another Republican decided to run for office.

He supports Giuliani and even has deluded himself into thinking Giuliani has libertarian leanings.......That is one of the bigger stretches of the imagination.

He supports Giuliani and Ron's CD14 opponent so much he has given them huge amounts of money.......ok, that's a lie, he has given them nothing for their campaigns.

He either goes by Dondero or Rittberg.... no one can figure out when he will use which name. He likes to call himself a half jew, whatever that means. Though he isn't a practicing Jew at all. He has even deluded himself so much that he says Ron Paul demanded he wear a yamulke to a political function. Can you see RP demanding someone do something like that?

Needless to say he started off as a car driver for RP and has delusions of grandeur that he single handedly got Ron Paul elected to office the second time RP ran in 1996.

He was one of the people that started the Republican Liberty Caucus, and they got rid of him.

So far he is just a gadfly that won't stop writing nasty articles about Ron Paul, using whatever time he has to write nonsense in his attempts to get him out of office.

Oh, the final thing about Eric is on his libertarian blog he still has a praise that Ron gave him years ago. This is way nutty, in that if RP is supposed to be this big nut job, wouldn't he want to distance himself from him?

He is just a sad little man with no life unless he is the center of attention."

Clinty's just spewing more the Paul Pot's bullshit & inconsistency:

Newsletters? "I didn't write them even though they are written in the first person and published under my name.

Books? "I wrote them after all they are written in the first person and published under my name.

Dondero? "He's credible when he says that Paul Pot is not a racist, anti-Semitic homphobe."

Dondero? "He's a disgruntled, former employee, who is lying when he claims that Paul wants Israel to disappear, knows who wrote the newsletter, wouldn't have lifted a finger to do anything about the Holocaust, etc."

Racism? "He doesn't see people in "collective groups" -- that it is something that is an anathema to his ideology."

"The Blacks": "Maybe this is part of the 'knock down Ron Paul' (effort) because he's gaining grounds with THE BLACKS. I'm getting more support right now, more votes from THE BLACKS because they understand what I'm talking about and they trust me" and from "A Special Issue on Racial Terrorism,' Ron Paul Special Report, 15 June 1992, Vol. VI, No. 6": “Order was only restored in L.A. when it came time for THE BLACKS to pick up their welfare checks three days after rioting began.”

Jews and Israel: "Ron Paul doesn't hate Jews or Israel."

Jews and Israel: One of Ron Paul's books, assuming that he actually wrote it since one shouldn't jump to any conclusions because his "not my newsletters" were written in the first person and bore his name too, is named "Liberty Defined," which was published in 2011. He writes in the introduction:

"...The results of liberty are all the things we love, none of which can be finally provided by government. We must have the opportunity to provide them for ourselves, as individuals, as families, as a society, and as a country. Off we go: A to Z."

Looking at the list, we see something interesting:

Insurance ... then Keynesianism. Unions ... then Zionism. Yep! I bet that lightbulb went off quickly!

Zionism? Yes. Islamism (jihad)? No.

The book was published in 2-0-1-1 and Paul Pot sees no problem in the issue that the world faces with Islamism.

If that weren't bad enough, see his book 1988 book, Freedom Under Siege. Not only does Paul Pot believe that "terrorists (who blew up the Marine barracks in Lebanon) probably were aided by Iran and supplied with explosives sold to them by Israel...", he allows the book to be published with a FLAMING and ASTONISHINGLY anti-Semitic Foreward by Lew Rockwell.

The average every day voter doesn't know where Iowa is, and doesn't care. Santorum comes across as a spoiled brat that is always mad. He got creamed in his own state and supported Specter against a real conservative. He rambles on with his memorized comments and lacks any spontaneity that would light up a crowd. In this political world of candidate adulation he is a certified loser.

George S| 1.2.12 @ 10:46AM

But the average megabucks RNC donors do know where Iowa is and do care.

somnolence| 1.2.12 @ 9:40AM

Donald Trump, for all his fake, egotistical posturing, is nothing but an eminent domain king, who has supported scores of Democrat liberals over the years. Santorum supported Specter because Specter supported him in Santorum's previous campaign for the Senate, visibly in the media. ALL of the candidates aren't even fooling themselves. The National Security Advisor would kick the respective asses of Paul, Trump, or any of the rest if they deemed the President put the country in peril by abandoning Israel or excessively bad-mouthed China. Just reading some of these comments makes me feel like I'm living in a world of delusional swirl where only pale white is the color. Trump is a chump, Paul is a troll, and that is all.

Kade| 1.2.12 @ 12:24PM

Trump I believe is pro-Israel and bad mouthing (communist) China is a phrase that liberal CNBC money pundits use whenever Trump points out their corrupt trade behavior; somehow being pro-American is now politically incorrect by the country club Republican ruling elite.

bill| 1.2.12 @ 10:17AM

Santorum is Huckabee, who will win the IA Caucus and then fade away as did Huckabee in 2008.
For GOP Primary, NH, SC, and FL are determinant.
In 1980, Reagan won NH, SC, FL, and won the GOP nominee.
In 2000, Bush won NH, SC, FL, and won the GOP nod.
In 2008, McCain won NH, SC, FL, and clinched the GOP gavel.
In 2012, we may have surprise winner, like Santorum, but will never get the nominee.
I predict Rick Perry will be the winner of the IA Caucus, but lost NH to Romney, yet Perry will continue his surge in SC, FL, and eventually will secure his nomination.
People underestimates Perry as they did Reagan in 1980. Reagan trailed Bush in the GOP race, and knocked Bush out by winning NH. Reagan also became the President of a "come from behind victory",after trailing Carter in the poll.
Perry will shred Obama in the debate, and America will choose Perry over Obama, because Perry has charisma and leadership.

Anthony M| 1.2.12 @ 10:45AM

It's a shame Perry stumbled so badly in the debates because the guy really has a great story to tell and an impressive resume. Santorum seems to stand for conservative principles but I'm troubled by his support of "Senator Abortion" Arlen Specter and his gigantic loss in his most recent senate race.

bill| 1.2.12 @ 10:53AM

Mr. Anthony M,

Reagan also stumbled in his 1980 campaign, and yet he became the President.
Perry is the 3 term governor of TX, a state with 25 million people, has conservative credentials, and can defeat Obama handily.
Santorum is the flavor of the month, as we had Huckabee in 2008.
I'm rooting for Perry because he's viable and electable.

Newt would eat Obama's FREE lunch in any debate, anywhere and anytime. The candidate wont be debating Obama, they will be debating his cronies. There isn't but one man in the whole line up that knows everything that has gone on in numorous administrations. No one will be able to shake him, raddle him or worry him. I'm sorry but hey man, I'm looking to win this thing for the good of our country. The state of Texas is ONE state. Newt knows about the entire country and world for that matter. Just saying. Don't let the Liberals put an easy foot up our candidates backside. Romney, Paul, Santorum? All good guys but in the history subject and current events they are weak. Only one can fire back at em as fast as they can toss it and that man id Newt Gingrich, period.

Patrick| 1.3.12 @ 4:45AM

darcy| 1.2.12 @ 5:10PM

AG: Andrew McCarthy
President: Jim DeMint (but the best among current contenders is Bachmann, with Santorum a close second)

All the other contenders will talk nice but deliver more and more progressivism, more and more accommodation to liberalism -- which is well on its way to destroying the Constitution entirely, and with it, this once free United States of America.

For every five negatives Perry, Romney, Paul, and Gingrich have, Santorum and Bachmann might have one each. The choice is clear.

Nite| 1.2.12 @ 8:23PM

Perry has always been a staunch conservative. He is NOTHING like Paul, Romney or Gingrich. Perry has not only talked the talk, but walked the walk. I am from TX and have knowledge of his behaviors, abilities, convictions, and absolute kindness. I repeat, he is absolutely nothing like these other 3 individuals.

bill| 1.2.12 @ 9:26PM

Nite, it's nice to see someone who is from TX praising Rick Perry. In my humble opinion, he is the most viable candidate in the GOP field. MSM are criticizing Perry because they smell Reagan when they see Perry. MSM are scared of Perry, as they were with Reagan.

Nite| 1.2.12 @ 8:34PM

Interesting choices. My VP would be Col. Allen West from Florida, AG would be the VA AG, Treasury would be Donald Trump, Joe Arpaio would be good. Sarah Palin for Interior/Energy Perry always made very good appointments in TX and I am sure he would if he were President. Actually Ron Paul might be good at a Cabinet position. Newt as Secretary of State. Santorum as a Cabinet Secretary. Romney as Secretary of Commerce/labor. Perry said he would eliminate or combine Departments.

bill| 1.2.12 @ 9:33PM

I picked Rudy Giuliani for AG because he has a proven record being crime fighter and constitution-list serving NY.
Treasuary secretary would be Michelle Bachmann because she was the former federal tax lawyer and has knowledge on fiscal policy.
My DHS secretary will be Joe Arpaio, no apology.
Secretary of state will be John Bolton or Rick Santorum.
Ron Paul is a bad choice because of his stance on foreign policy. Newt and Mitt are not team payers, frankly, they both are old school GOPers.
We need some fresh blood, like Jason Chafeetz, Rand Paul, Mitch Daniel in the cabinet.

somnolence| 1.2.12 @ 11:37AM

Clint, you are so naive it is unbelievable. Dream on and keep deluding yourself. Santorum doesn't posture any more than does Paul or Trump, and they both do it all the time. We have no room for a solitary dictator in this country. Screw the Mussolini concept.

Bob Grant| 1.3.12 @ 12:15AM

You simply cannot compare this election cycle to the one in '08; completely different dynamics in play now.

A republican running against an incumbent who has to defend his record, a voting public who's (hopefully) over their white guilt, a republican candidate who's not associated with a previous disastrous republican administration, etc.

Competence and an ability affect change is all that voters will be looking for in the coming election. Of course I'm talking about republican, independent, and mushy moderate voters. The only ones who count.

Put away your McCain, Romney comparisons.

somnolence| 1.2.12 @ 11:46AM

Because that was in 2008, it was McCain's "turn", and Obama now has a 3 year record of accelerating the debt to 14 trillion dollars that he can't run away from. That is why Romney CAN win.

As this article states, Santorum's surge has been so recent and unexpected that his vetting has not happened. He may place well in Iowa, but then his true record will come out, and he will fall to low numbers again. He also doesn't have the resources to continue much longer.

Although Santorum's surge was "real" to begin with, it was exacerbated by the intense media coverage that resulted by it. He had many more reporters and camera men at many events than supporters. Part of this surge is a result of the media making news, and is not sustainable.

David| 1.2.12 @ 12:12PM

Thanks for your comments, Timothy. Santorum IS the only consistent conservative in this race. He has been an underdog his entire political career in heavily democratic PA. He has tremendous knowledge of the issues - both domestic and foreign.

And he has adequately explained his support of Spector over Toomey.

I think in a debate ONE ON ONE with any of the repub primary candidates, he can more than hold his own. He debates like Gingrich in that he challenges the PREMISES of ridiculous questions when they are asked of him. I think he will do very well in debates with Bam Bam.

And, I believe he will make a fine president. If he is smart, and he is, he will choose Marco Rubio as his running mate.

Haddit| 1.2.12 @ 2:45PM

Hey look Dave, No Conservative has ever gotten all that they want any more than a Liberal has gotten everything they want. Logic and resonable minded people know this. Bill, like your dream team except that Santorum would be a better prez than Perry.

To those who think Santorum will fall again, I don't think so. He will stay at the top of the pack. He did not and does not have front-runner status as the nominee for the last 3 years as Romney has. He has not had a meteoric rise as Bachmann did, as Perry did, or as Gingrich did. Other than the Specter deal, he does not have a bunch of negatives that conservatives will reject as Perry and Gingrich have. He is certainly more knowledgeable and has much more experience than Bachmann. He IS a likeable person and will connect with average Americans.

And to anyone who refers to him as a RINO, you are a moron. You obviously have NOT followed politics the past 20 years, or paid much attention to how he voted.

Nite| 1.2.12 @ 8:26PM

Perry has a record of executive experience as Governor of the second largest state in the US and larger than most countries of the world. He also has the money and organization to win the nomination. Santorum as none of these.

Haddit| 1.2.12 @ 2:49PM

bob alou| 1.2.12 @ 3:54PM

I can and would vote for Santorum with out a problem. Anyone who has ever held public office has some votes that could be questioned, or are questionable. Santorum has fewer than most and has stood up and been counted on some of the most contentious issues of the day. Supporting Specter was a party move that he should not have made but at this point, so what. He's not Romney.

bill| 1.2.12 @ 5:43PM

Santorum is a good choice for VP, not for President, and only the reason we consider Santorum as VP nominee so that GOP will carry PA in 2012. Otherwise, Santorum is just another Huckabee.

Great posts today. Enjoyed each one.

When it comes down to the nitty gritty, I'm pulling for Rick Perry and/or Newt.

Yes, there have been some stumble shere and there, both big and small, but overall these two men are the best of the best from this group. Maybe we'll really be blessed to have them both in the end.

And may God have mercy on the U.S.A.!!!!

David| 1.2.12 @ 6:19PM

Haddit, yes, almost every poll says a vast majority of the people PERSONALLY like Obama and his family. That is because people are stupid. The only reason we should like or dislike any politician is because of the positions he/she takes on the issues. That said, yes, being personally likeable is a considerable advantage. To wit: Ronald Reagan.

As to testesterone, Santorum can debate as well as Newt. If the nominee, he will be ONE ON ONE with Bam Bam, not fighting for time with six other candidates and their differing viewpoints. Santorum is a very tough debater.

Newt can't even beat Quin Hillyer in a debate. Now what makes anyone really think he can beat Obama? Romney/Bachmann for 2012.

Michael Tomlinson| 1.2.12 @ 11:23PM

Might have been a more credible national candidate if he'd have beaten Casey or even came close to winnning against the not so bright or inspiring faux pro-life Casey.

As for Ron Paul he's a pork king and defender of the New Deal, Great Society and anti-American anarchist of OWS. On foreign policy he's far to the left of Obama. On social issues aside from abortion he's in agreement time and again with Democrats and Obama. A vote for Ron Paul is a vote for the Obama agenda.

Hey KingoftheNet, you are an idiot. The proof? The fact that you referred to a born child as a "decomposing fetus".

To be sure, you are the disgusting one.
