Ghostwriters Gone Wild

No, Ron Paul didn’t write the Ron Paul newsletters.

“I was born in East Baltimore, on Chester Street. I lived there for three years, then we moved out to Pimlico and for the rest of my adult life until I got married I lived there on Oakmont Avenue about four blocks from the racetrack…”

Those are the opening words of former Maryland governor Marvin Mandel’s memoirs, I’ll Never Forget It, but he didn’t write them down. I did. There is nothing wrong with that, nor is there anything wrong with me telling you. Politicians strike different deals with their ghostwriters. Ours placed my name on the cover of the book (“with Jeremy Lott”).

Politicians exercise various degrees of control over their ghostwritten material. Richard Nixon was a notorious control freak who would drastically rework the chapters that his research assistants produced for him. Everything that went out under his name had to sound exactly right to him.

Ronald Reagan was much less hands-on with his ghostwriters. At the press conference introducing his ghostwritten post-presidential autobiography An American Life, he quipped “I hear it’s terrific. Maybe someday I’ll read it.” The crowd loved the line but I’ve heard that his publisher did not.

Four years ago, during his first campaign for the GOP nomination for president, Texas congressman Ron Paul came under fire for incendiary words that appeared in his newsletters. We can chew on the substance of those words some other time. Suffice it to say that they are not defensible statements, that many of them are racist or racially-tinged, and that Paul himself has expressed deep regret for ever letting them go out under his name.

Right now, I am concerned with the latest effort to fan the old flames of controversy to blaze by folks insisting that Paul really did write those words, or played an active role in editing and producing those newsletters. The simple truth is that, no, he didn’t write or edit the newsletters in question. Usually, he didn’t bother to read them until well after the fact.

We learned all of this in the last election cycle, but critics are trying to make old charges new again. The website Conservatives Network has splashed pictures of the newsletters up in a post titled “Who Wrote The Ron Paul Newsletters? Ron Paul Wrote Them — Clear Proof.” The site’s “clear proof” consists of helpful red arrows and circles that highlight the use of the first person in the newsletters, a mimeographed signature, and the fact that Paul was listed as editor.

All of those things are true and beside the point. Paul says that he did not write the words in question. He published four different newsletters over the years: “Ron Paul’s Freedom Report,” “The Ron Paul Political Report,” “The Ron Paul Survival Report” and “The Ron Paul Investment Letter.” For some time, he took an active interest in writing and editing them but in the early nineties, newsletter production was farmed out to ghostwriters who were given de facto free rein. At that point in his life, Paul was out of politics and working crazy hours to reestablish his medical practice as an ob-gyn after he had torched a whole year of his medical life to challenge George H.W. Bush as the Libertarian Party’s nominee for president.

Paul has declined to name the ghostwriters for a couple of reasons. One, anonymity was part of the deal that he struck with them. Two, he professes genuine ignorance of who wrote what specific words, and he may have a point there. After an investigation, Reason magazine fingered former Paul congressional staffer Lew Rockwell and a few of his colleagues that he had farmed the ghost-ghostwriting out to as likely culprits.

We should note that nearly every single fair-minded person who has looked into the matter believes Paul didn’t write the offending newsletters. The words in question simply do not sound anything like Paul’s message or delivery. The question that critics such as The American Spectator ‘s own Jeffrey Lord are now pressing is, Well, OK, he didn’t write those words, but he knew what his ghostwriters were doing in his name.

To that poisonous end, Lord cites the words of embittered former Paul staffer Eric Dondero. Dondero is an interesting and erratic character who, like Lord, has very serious disagreements about Paul on foreign policy. Dondero once founded an organization called Libertarians for Lieberman, which makes about as much sense as Marxists for Tax Cuts. Dondero charges that Paul “did read them, every one of them” and signed off on the newsletters “before they were published.”

When I put these charges to Paul’s presidential campaign spokesman Gary Howard, he was a bit exasperated. His first e-mail read, in full, “Eric Dondero is a disgruntled former staffer who was fired for performance issues. He is not a valid source.” I kept prodding. In a follow up, Howard, who is black, said, “Congressman Paul has said many times that he didn’t know about these terrible writings, and did not sign off on them.”

That may not be the end of the matter. There are all kinds of questions stemming from the newsletters, especially the issue of Ron Paul’s executive competence. (Paulistas will no doubt rejoin that he learned something from the debacle.) But the unsmoking gun here is Paul’s authorship and creative control of those newsletters. If this were a reality TV show, we might call it “Ghostwriters Gone Wild.”

While I have no inside knowledge of how Ron Paul's operation worked, I'm quite prepared to believe that he himself had little or nothing to do with the most inflammatory pieces in "his" newsletters. He may well have been a hands-off editor who merely lent his name to publications that other people were running.

My problem with Ron Paul is not that I think he's a vile racist or an ardent Jew-hater. I don't get the sense that he's a bigot. But what IS troubling is that he attracts so many people who plainly ARE vile racists and ardent anti-semites, and their presence doesn't seem to bother him in the least.

Jack in Wi.| 12.21.11 @ 7:28AM

Desperate, Desperate, Desperate. Jeff Lord is getting desperate. This stuff has been dragged out every election for 15 years. The reason Ron Paul is gettting traction isn't because of him personally. His ideas and consistancy are what has gotten him a huge national following. Bigots like Jeff Lord who think that 5 million Palistinians are worse then lice is not exactly the best one to complain about racism and hate.

Let all those who love the racist pimple on the rear end of the Dead Sea, justify the way Israel treats half it's population, Equal rights for all in old Palistine. End the terror. End the hate. Integrate the Israeli state. Let Romney, Gingrich, Santorum, Bachman, and Perry justify their undying support for a far worse state then Apartheid South Africa. Hundreds of billions of American money and a moutain of blood has been spent to prop up this disgrace to civil liberties, equality before the law, and everything America stands for.

L. Ross| 12.21.11 @ 7:37AM

Jack, I've been to Israel several times. There are minarettes all over the country. Arab Muslims are free to vote, they are citizens, they can join the military, they are members of the Parliment.

The important thought experiment is this. If the Arab nations surrounding Israel disarmed, would they be attacked and invaded? Or if only Israel disarmed, would Israel be attacked and invaded? Mexico and Canada have nothing to fear from a U.S. invasion, even though we are vastly more powerful. Israel is surrounded by vile regimes dedicated to the destruction of the Jewish state. And Jews. islam is the new Nazi party. (Or was Naziism the new islam? It predates the Nazis by over a thousand years.)

I know we won't agree on this, but you statement at Israel has worse Apartheid than South Africa is just ignorant.

Alan | 12.21.11 @ 7:52AM

Ignorant? Not to a jew hating anti-semite it isn't. Notice their is nary a negative word about the oppressive murderous regimes surrounding Isreal from our resident Jew hater. Assad, after gunning down civilians in the streets must be an undercover Jew somehow. Only the evil Jews would shoot down street protesters, not the peacful loving Muslims. These Jew hating anti-semites like the one above that are herding around their leader Paul are whats going to kill off any chance Paul ever had which was none to begin with.

Jack in Wi.| 12.21.11 @ 8:09AM

Alan if you don't like the neighbors move. After all you stole the place and bomb the neighbors at will. Why should they like you? How long is a bankrupt America supposed to carry Israel on it's back? If the Israeli's won't make at least a cold peace with it's neighbors, it can never succeed. 1 million sane Jews have left Israel already. 500 thousand live in the US. A quarter million Jews have moved to Germany. A huge number of the Israeli population has 2 passports. The writing is on the wall. Israel is and always has been a terrible idea. Time has run out.

Len| 12.21.11 @ 8:40AM

Jack this is garbage, Nothing was stolen from anyone. It was those surrounding Israel that declared war on them and refused to take refugees, refugees who wouldn't go back to Israel.

The issue of Israel is separate from that of the US, so I'm not advocating the US aids Israel, and in fact under the US constitution there is no authority for such a thing, and we have no treaties with them. But it's just garbage to claim that Israel was stolen.

http://townhall.com/columnists.....t_conflict

http://townhall.com/columnists.....ian_people

As for Alan, I'm a Jew and Ron Paul supported, and far from the only one. In fact there is a yahoo group of Jews supporting RP, and a facebook group. My problem is that so many conflate the US and Israel.

Jack in Wi.| 12.21.11 @ 9:00AM

There are a lot of sane Jews Len. Israel exists and I would love to see it succeed . But I don't see how that happens as long as it keeps treating it's Palistinian neighbors worse the dirt. I believe the only solution is one state with full civil liberties for all.

coal carrier| 12.21.11 @ 9:27AM

Mein Fuhrer, you have lots of information on da Jews. What else is in da file?

Alan | 12.21.11 @ 11:00AM

See, mr. Jack, I forgot that you Christians, namely Catholics in particular like you profess to be(and I say that loosely concerning you, because their are many good god fearing Catholics and Christians)throughout history have always known whats best for Jews, where they should live, where they SHOULDN'T live, how they should live, etc. I mean, after all the history gone by how can Jews go wrong listening to more "advice" about what Jews need or what they "stole" from a religious sect called Roman Catholics who murdered, pillaged, raped and looted and "stole"their way across two continents during the middle ages killing Jews, Muslims, and other Christians in the name of Christ. Suppressed science and learning for centuries, and tortured and murdered those who wouldn't submit to the will of evil Popes and Catholic leaders who ran the Vatican. You Catholics did a nice job on the eastern Orthodox churches by looting and destroying Constantinople for fun and profit. Wasn't it the Christian side of the religious spectrum that decided Jews needed to be run through gas chambers and have their bodies stuffed into ovens? Yes Sir, Jews really need a lecture from the likes of somebody like you with more advice on what THEY need to do. Seems like your Popes lately do a lot of apologizing to Jews, Muslims, Orthodox Christians, so in short heres some sound advice for you and your self-serving hypocritical anti-semitic lectures, Piss off!

Matthew L.| 12.21.11 @ 6:04PM

Alan;

You do realize that Arabs are a Semitic people too, right? So when you profess your hatred for these people you are actually being anti-Semitic yourself.

Grow up. You don't have to agree with criticism of Israel, but you absolutely must accept the right of others to be critical of Israel without resorting to petty name calling and labeling them anti-Semitic. The fact you don't even know the true definition of Semitic speaks volumes.

Alan| 12.21.11 @ 6:43PM

I respond to a comment like "racist pimple on the rear end of the Dead Sea" with the same fervor. Everybody knows what the context is I'm using except you it seems so don't play stupid unless you are. As far as "absolute rights", he's using his absolute right and I'm using mine to call him what he is. Don't like it? Use your absolute right to not read it and theirs nothing "petty" about calling Jew hater out for what he is. By the way, Assad is a murderous thug and so is his regime, a fact, not an opinion. Are we clear?

Paul McGrath| 12.21.11 @ 10:39PM

I could spend an hour on this, Alan, but the Nazis were not Christian. Far from it. Let us not spread this lie around any further.

alan| 12.22.11 @ 7:59AM

Christians in their actions, no, raised christian either Catholic or Luthern, Sorry, yes. Thats a fact. If you want to despute that go right ahead.

alan| 12.22.11 @ 8:49AM

http://nobeliefs.com/Hitler1.htm
They used Christianity like a tool, just like other evil men who use religion as a weapon. you want to spend an hour arguing that by all means go right ahead. Your wasting your time. Maybe you should read the treatise called "on Jews and their Lies" written by Martin Luther. Germans were 54% protestant and 40% Catholic, I.E. therefore coming from the "Christian side of the Religious spectrum" as I stated. If you think thats a lie, fine, its a fact. Christianity has a streak of anti-semitic history in Europe throughout the early and middle ages, again fact. If you want to argue who practiced Christian beliefs and who didn't doesn't change the fact that they were indeed a Christian Country. Both Goebels and Hitler were Catholics, and although neither practiced their religions from the 1930's onward Hitler considered still himself a Catholic. Certain Christian leaders spoke out against certain positions the Nazis took after taking over the government concerning Jews and other anti-Christian positions but other religious leaders willfully went along. Anti-Semitic behavior by German Christians goes back to the First Crusade and the massacres of Jews at Worms and Maintz in and about 1096. So, concluding, if you want to make a point that these evil people practiced Christian principles or not thats fine, but if your going to tell me that the majority of these people were not Christians nor thought of themselves as Christians them your full of it.

Anthony M| 12.22.11 @ 10:11PM

Who was responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ? Who stoned Sain Stephen? Who allied themselves with the Muslim invaders of Iberia? Where did Trotsky get his religious education? I think there's enough blame to go around for people of all religious backgrounds but we here in the USA decided that religion is a personal issue as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others. Take your anti-Christian diatribes back to old Europe, we don't want them here.

Alan| 12.23.11 @ 8:27AM

Ah yes, bravely spoken Asshole. The question was "Nazis being Christians" which I gave facts and links to and your reply refuted nothing I said because its a fact and an untidy sticky one at that now isn't it?
Hence:
"Take your anti-Christian diatribes back to old Europe, we don't want them here" and Yet, Hitler and Goebels are still Catholics, Germany was a Christian nation from the Christian side of the religious spectrum, and Jews are the last ones that need advice from somebody pointing a wagging Papal finger at them about what they "need to do" or how to repent and become Jews again. Point made. Cased closed.

Anthony M| 12.23.11 @ 6:40PM

Alan, Christianity is a religion, not a race. One is a Christian because they accept Jesus Christ as their saviour and try to act in accordance with his teachings while realizing they are saved by grace and not action. Judaism can also be treated as a religion although there are some who wish to treat it as a race, so someone born of a Jewish mother is automatically a Jew, this is not the case in Christianity.

Alan| 12.23.11 @ 9:19AM

"Take your anti-Christian diatribes back to old Europe, we don't want them here"

Oh and thanks for some more "we" advice, from the "we" of course. Thanks for making my point!

Alan| 12.23.11 @ 10:15AM

Here's one more thought. Maybe your issue is with that Jew hating Anti-semite above who thinks "anything good Jews have done pales in comparison to the bad" and Isreal is the darkness in the world and see how you feel about it. Insert Christian for Jew and America for Isreal in that statement and see how that hits you and then have the same person tell YOU what you need to do to become more Christian. Self-Rightous Pontificators like Mr. Jack who comes from a
religious standpoint and thinks he knows what others from another religious standpoint NEED to do to I think in order to get back in God's graces(according to him of course, he knows what God intends) or something to that effect are the truly dangerous ones. People like him you run from because in one hand is a some religous document that justifies his rightousness of action and in the other is usually a sword to enforce it. Thats goes for ALL religious fanatics.

Israel Firster Propaganda Squad Neo-Chickenhawk Cheerleader, Tool Job Kept Silent About His Fellow Traveler, Israel Firster Ben Ami Kadish.

" Ben-ami Kadish is a former U.S. Army mechanical engineer. He pleaded guilty in December 2008 to being an "unregistered agent for Israel", and admitted to disclosing classified U.S. documents to Israel in the 1980s.His unauthorized disclosure of classified U.S. secrets to Israel was concurrent with the espionage activity of Jonathan Pollard.

In December 2008, Kadish pleaded guilty to acting as an unregistered agent of Israel, admitting he gave classified documents to Israel in the 1980s.Prosecutors asserted that Kadish had furnished classified American secrets to Yosef Yagur, the same Israeli agent who had received secret documents from Jonathan Pollard.

In determining the sentence, Judge William H. Pauley III asserted, "Why it took the government 23 years to charge Mr. Kadish is shrouded in mystery."Pauley stated that prison would "serve no purpose" for a man of Kadish's advanced age and infirmity, opting to levy a $50,000 fine against Kadish. The prosecutor stated that the decision to accept the plea agreement was based on Kadish's cooperation and his willingness to admit wrongdoing. Prior to sentencing, Kadish faced the judge standing with the aid of a cane and stated, "I'm sorry I made a mistake ... It was a misjudgment. I thought I was helping the state of Israel without harming the United States."

Baloney Ross. South Africa let it's blacks go to Church on Sunday. It had democracy for whites and some limited democracy for Asiams and Coloreds. It had a very free press and more free Speech then is allowed in the Israeli Knessest. Helen Sussman, a Jewish radical was able to call for an end to Apartheid in the parliment any time she felt like. Let some Arab member or even Jewish member of the Knesset call for the and of the Jewish state and full integation and see what happens to him.

The fact is that Israel hates it's Arab citizens and treats them worse then we treated our blacks under segregation. At least the American blacks had a written constitution to point to as their rights were violated. It treats the the Palistianians in Gaza and the Territories worse then Hitler treated you Jews up until 1938. We all know where it went from there. Occam and others on this site continue to call for mass murder and nuclear genocide. It is really disgraceful how we kow tow to this insanty.

Nobody fought harder for full civil rights and equality before the law in South Africa and the segregated South then the Jews of those countries. That Israel is far worse then either of them is truely disgraceful

Nancy in NC| 12.21.11 @ 9:42AM

What a bunch of bullcrap. Try building a synagogue in Saudia Arabia or Jordan. The Arabs have religious freedom in Israel and many are doing quite well with the status quo. The Arabs have control of almost all of the Middle East, yet they want it all. If the Arabs were truly a just and humane people, they would let it be, and consider it a fair justice for what the Jews have suffered throughout history. Or are you one of those that refuses to believe the Holocaust happened?

Israel is not perfect, but to read Americans here taking up with the terrorists of the PLO is extremely distasteful. I have never heard a Jew say they wanted to wipe the Arab population off the face of the earth, but the opposite happens on a regular basis. Such rhetoric is the Palestinians worse enemy, and makes fair minded people refuse to see their side of any argument. Their own venom and hatred makes their arguments ring hollow.

L. Ross| 12.21.11 @ 10:00AM

Jack, I'm sorry, but are you saying that the only thing that which will satisfy you is to end the Jewish state? That is what I am reading in your first paragraph. Of course that would be an unpopular opinion. How far do you think elected officials in D.C. would get calling for the dissolution of the United States?

As far as hating Arabs, that is simply not true. Israelis are certainly not fond of muslims who are taught from birth that Jews are the descendants of pigs and monkey and should be exterminated. I'm not for of muslims who feel the same way about me. However, secular Arabs are welcomed there. I know what I'm talking about. I have seen it with my own eyes. Have you?

To conflate the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany with Arabs in Gaza and the West Bank is also ignorant. How many German Jews were fireboming, suicide bombing, riot inciting, rocket lobbing citizens.

By the way, with a name like Ross it shouldn't be tough for you to infer that I am not Jewish. I'm about as W.A.S.P. as they get.

If you don't think the muslims are allowed to practice their religion in Israel, you sir, are a 'tard. There is no use in continuing a conversation with such ignorance.

Jack in Wi.| 12.21.11 @ 6:24PM

I am saying how can you have a Jewish state that has 50% of the population under it's control that is Muslim or Christian? Now Israel can do what it wants. It has 600 atomic weapons and can vaporize the whole Middle East if it wants. The USA can't dso anything about it. But these hundreds of billions of wasted aid we have spent on both Israel and the Arabs are nothing but an Unconstitutional atttack on the basic civil liberties of the Bill of Rights. If we gave the Pope a proportional amount every year it would be at least 50 billion. He would use it to educate people, give them healthcare, and spread the Gospel of Peace. All the money we waste on Israel is spent to oppress and destablize the Middle East. The money we give to Israel is used to bribe our political class for more money and support and to help push the religious fantasies of Zionist Jews and Zionist Christians.

Really? I have been to Israel too. Muslims can vote, but do they have equal rights under the law? No they do not.
To call all nations surrounding Israel vile regimes is xenophobic and unfair.
Israel has 300 nuclear weapons, a modern military, and high technology. They are more than capable of defending themselves from foreign adversaries. Part of the motto of Zionism is to promote independence and self relaince. That is something Ron Paul is willing to give to the Israelis.
The US needs to let the Israelis and Palestinians determine their own peace process and future.
I hardly see what this topic has to do with the article mentioned however.
But I will state this: Ron Paul is not a racist, nor an anti-semite.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Just two weeks before Iowa’s first-in-the-nation precinct caucuses there’s a new leader, but the race remains “remarkably fluid,” according to a new Iowa State University/Gazette/KCRG poll likely Republican caucus-goers.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul has moved into first place – the fifth candidate to hold that spot since the mid-August Iowa GOP Straw Poll. The data collected between Dec. 8 and 18 suggest that unlike the previous frontrunners, Paul’s support is more solid.

Paul is the first choice of 27.5 percent of 333 likely caucus-goers among the 740 registered Republicans and 200 registered independents contacted by ISU. That’s up from 20.4 percent in an ISU/Gazette/KCRG poll in November. He’s followed closely by former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich whose support increased from 4.8 percent to 25.3 percent. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney came in at 17.5 percent, up from 16.3."

It is with great regret that I interrupt my eternal slumber to comeback down to this ball of mud and read you fools the Riot Act. And in case you doubt me, this comes straight from the Big Kahuna, and she's NOT happy...so you'd better damn well listen (Damnit, you made me curse! D'oh, I did it again!)

Anyway...where was I? Oh, yes...thank you, Cesare...Ron Paul. Ron Paul!?!? WHAT, may I ask, are you morons thinking???

First of all, and it's unbelievable that I have to remind you of this, but RON PAUL IS A FREAKIN' BAPTIST!!! A BAPTIST!!!!! Have you lost touch with reality??? We haven't had one of our own in the White House since poor Jackie-Boy "lost his head" in Dallas in '63, but at every single debate so far there's little Ricky Santorum standing up there at the podium, giving all the right answers, and you num-nuts do nothing but tear him down! Sure, he's a garlic-eater, but at least he's a good Catholic garlic-eater, and NOT A BAPTIST!!!

Secondly, Ron Paul is as week on foreign policy as we're all those yid pantywaists Commies I had to deal with in the 1930's! He's a freakin' isolationist that will do nothing to protect his country from the scourge of Islam, and let's not forget boys...who ARE the Muslims? Why, the sons of Ishmael, that's who! And who was Ishmael? Why, the whore-son of Abraham!! And WHO was Abraham??? The father of the Jews!!! So don't ya' see lads? It's as plain as day if you take the time!! Just connect the dots!!!

Now look...Ron Paul is on our side on a few things, that's for sure! Why, just read his newsletter! It's like I said in '38 after the Germans ransacked all those Jewish stores - it ain't like they didn't have it coming'! But for the love of St. Pete, the guy is a loon! He's a disgrace, and those commie-lovin Democrats will eat him for lunch in a general election.

Now look, boys...I have to go! It's as cold here as a witche's teat, and I hate the cold. Besides, I'm in the middle of a great Bridge game with Pope Pius X, Cesare Borgia, and Machiavelli. Just between you and me, I don't trust Nicholo as far as I can throw him, but he mixes a good Bloody Mary, and that's good enough for me!

So get your heads out of your keesters, and stop this pussy-footin' around with Ron Paul. Santorum is your man, and that's an order!!

Sincerely,

Fr. Charlie

Mike Rothschild| 12.21.11 @ 4:05PM

Timothy I do not understand the animosity in your message. However, I do agree that the religious persecution rhetoric needs to stop.

The reality is that yes, Ron Paul did not write the newsletters. He did in the beginning, but after his bid for President in the 80's he went back to practicing medicine in Texas.

The papers were making money, so he entrusted his company Ron Paul & Associates to continue producing the newsletters via a ghost writer.

The letters happened, and he justly deserves criticism for allowing them to go out unchecked. He was too trusting of his business partners, who used the papers to promote "Paleolibertarian" ideals during the massive division in the Libertarian Party.

Regardless of this 20 year old story, which surfaces every election cycle it seems, there is no conclusive evidence that Paul wrote them.

He personally has disavowed them, and has taken on moral blame for this issue.

In retrospect, if you look at all he has done in the promotion of individual rights it is clear that Ron Paul is anything but a racist.

He stands up for black minorities in multiple instances, from ending the death penalty to scrapping the war on drugs.

He was the only congressman to support Israel's decision to bomb Iraq's nuclear reactor. While the rest of Washington condemned her actions.

He wants to set Israel free from US imperial dictation over her future.

How can anyone call this humble man a racist in light of all the positive things he has done?

Timothy L. Pennell| 12.21.11 @ 7:29PM

I ain't buying it. The BUCK stops with him. It's got HIS name on it. It belongs to HIM, as does everything that's in it.

We got a guy in the White House, right now, who likes to tell everyone that everything that he's done, for the last 3 YEARS, has been somebody else' fault.

We don't need another one.

Ron Paul didn't write those newsletters. Of course not.
Bill Clinton didn't have sex with "that woman."
Jon Corzine has no idea what happened to the billion plus.
Barney Frank wasn't aware a homosexual sex ring was operating out of his house.
The dog ate my homework.

And now for something factual. Walter Scott didn't write Ivanhoe, only dictate it. Nonetheless, Abner MacKiness gets no credit for the plot.

" Ron Paul, Polls and Panic

The conservative media flips out over the latest front-runner

" The Ron Paul Panic is officially under way.

The Texas congressman has been gaining strength in Iowa all year, but the media—and the Republican establishment—have been content to treat him dismissively.

Oh yeah. Interesting character. Seems to have tapped into something. Has a cult following. He can’t win the nomination, the refrain goes, but he’s an interesting sideshow.

But a couple of Iowa polls showing Paul bursting into first place—past the previously hot Newt Gingrich and the slow but steady Mitt Romney—are forcing the press to take him more seriously."

I agree with the first part of your post, but in answer to your comment about the attraction of the relatively small group of "haters" out there, it is hard to bash a group because of their beliefs if, like Ron Paul, you believe the First Amendment means what it says. Nobody has to listen to them, and in fact most don't, but they do have a right to those beliefs and they, unfortunately, will use those rights. Ron Paul has stated that he will take their money and put it to good use, but it does not buy them anything, and it certainly does not imply any kind of endorsement.

Woody| 1.3.12 @ 7:03AM

The truth is that he doesn't attract "so many." I've said for some time that he is an enigma to mainstream types because they don't have any real experience with third party politics. An economics prof who advised our campus libertarian group (many moons ago) addressed the "fringe" question from a mathematical perspective. If every 10th ball is a certain color, and you have 10 balls, the colored ball is easy to find. A hundred balls will have a proportionate number (10) but they will be harder to find. I don't know if this is referred to as dilution? I'm not a mathematician, but the point is made. Barack Obama, for instance, has his fair share of supporters who believe the New Orleans levies were blown up to drown the black population. Obama has his share of supporters who believe aids was created to kill gay people. The JFK/RFK/MLK murders are still seen as conspiratorial on the left. Obama attended Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years and was an acquaintance of Bill Ayers who said that 15-25 million people would have to be killed if they ever took over. 29 percent of black Americans polled recently admitted negative attitudes toward Jews. As for Ron Paul's Republican opponents? The powerful and unmistakable odor of mendacity is evident. National Review and neo-conservative COMMENTARY magazine have long put out articles no different than what appeared in the Paul newsletters. In fact, Commentary had some such article this past August regarding the London riots. The point being that all candidates have their supporters who are morally reprehensible and who project their own wishes onto the candidate. The smaller the movement or support, the easier it is to see.

Michael Tomlinson| 12.21.11 @ 7:12AM

Whether Ron Paul wrote the garbage in his newsletter is irrelevant. If he was stupid enough to put his name to it then he should be held responsible for the content or own up to the fact that he’s incredibly lazy, greedy and intellectually challenged to the point that he doesn’t even understand racism when he endorses it. Of course, what is being ignored is Paul’s history of taking money from racist hate groups and giving them tips to avoid getting on the Federal radar. Like his newsletters and pork spending Paul disingenuously makes excuses for the money, but he eagerly use it to promote himself as an Obamaesque “messiah.”

Speaking of pork spending what is mystifying is how some conservatives are letting a DC establishment earmark kings off the hook so easily. Paul not only shares Obama's Narcissistic Personality Disorder, radical foreign policy and distaste for American exceptionalism, but like Obama he likes to waste taxpayer's money on his special interests. Ron Paul has no problem picking winners and losers as long as they’re in his district and advance his favorite cause – Ron Paul.

Paul made over $157 million in earmark requests for FY 2011, one of only four House Republicans to request any earmarks. Additionally, he made over $398 million in earmark requests for FY 2010, again one of the leading Republican House members. Of course, Ron Paul, hypocrite that he is, didn’t vote for the bill, but he got on the DC gravy train just like a good Obama Democrat.

When you look at Paul's MovOn.org eagerness to embrace anti-Semites, his blame America foreign policy, his loathing of American exceptionalism and his eagerness to funnel taxpayer money into his special interests is it any wonder that his support in Iowa is actually coming from Democrats and liberals? As Politico reports, ". . .public polling shows that Paul’s lead is built in large part with the support of non-Republicans – and few party veterans think such voters would stick with the GOP in November. ‘They’ll all go back and vote for Obama,’ predicted Beach (an Iowa Republican activist).

Ron Paul isn’t a Republican or a small government guy. He’s a typical tax and spend DC insider. The only good thing that would come from a Paul win in Iowa is the GOP may kill this useless caucus. Hopefully, next to go will be the New Hampshire primary. Does anyone really believe New Englanders know what’s best for the Republican Party or country?

PapaBear| 12.21.11 @ 8:42AM

If you own a business, you are responsible for it. Paul's newsletter business netted him nearly $1,000,000 per year. His signature and name were plastered all over it.

Paul needs to own up to the bigotry and anti-antisemitism. If he wants reasonable people to vote for him, that means naming who wrote it. From my perspective, you are totally correct to say that authorship is irrelevant:
In my small business which transports heavy equipment, I inspect everything. Every week I check the equipment tie downs. Twice a year I check how tight all the screws are. I replace equipment before it breaks.

Paul is now asking us to believe that he didn't check the content in a newsletter business? If true, that shows a level of incompetence beyond the worst we have seen from Obama.

If we believe Paul's excuse and let him off the hook, we cannot criticize Eric Holder.

Is there anything more that needs to be said?

Len| 12.21.11 @ 8:46AM

This is just plain stupid. RP put earmarks in so that if legislation passed his district would at least get some of the stolen money back. The fact that he has continually voted constitutionally/small government, and often the only one says to you "typical insider". Please!! You're lying to yourself or have serious mental issues to attempt such a claim.

What Anti-Semites is RP embracing?? This is just slander and shows the willing depths of despicable people will lower themselves to when confronted with that which illustrates their hypocrisy. Conservatives claim constitutionality, but in fact when a man like RP shows what that means they gnash their teeth and fly into a frenzy as behold it was only hatred for the other guy.

Clint| 12.21.11 @ 9:57AM

Dr.Ron Paul,
" I have never voted for an earmark. I voted against all appropriation bills. So, this whole thing about earmarks is totally misunderstood.
Earmarks is the responsibility of the Congress.
If you cut off all the earmarks, it would be 1 percent of the budget. But, if you vote against all the earmarks, you don't cut one penny. That is what you have to listen to. We're talking about who has the responsibility, the Congress or the executive branch?

I'm saying, get it out of the hands of the executive branch. Just listen again about what I have said about the TARP funds. We needed to earmark every penny. Now we gave them $350 billion, no earmarks, and nobody knows..."

Woody| 1.3.12 @ 7:05AM

A tax and spend insider? How many levels from reality do you have to be to believe that?

L. Ross| 12.21.11 @ 7:29AM

Simply put, all these appologists for Dr. Paul can never see any problems with their man. In the military, we have a thing called ACCOUNTABILITY. When there is an aircraft accident, heads roll. And it is usually not the heads of the personnel involved in the accident. The wing commander, the squadron commander, and the operations officer are usually the first to go. They are expected to maintain a culture of safety and professionalism, to train to the highest standards, and ensure that jets don't get broken. If jets do get broken, they must not be doing their job. It's just that simple.

I wonder just how vile a Paul newsletter would have to be to make his supporters say "this is just to much." These people he employed put out in his name racist rants. No one every called him up to ask him about this stuff? No one? That is about as credible as Obama saying he never heard racist comments in Rev. Wright's church.

Again, what would it take to make a Paul support say, "This is just too much?" Support for NAMBLA? Support for polygamy? I'm not sure Paul supporters care.

Jack in Wi.| 12.21.11 @ 7:43AM

Ron Paul has taken full accountablity for the newsletters. He has for 15 years and has apoligized for them, over and over again. He has never said he agreed with them, but has accepted full moral responsibility. The fact that Lord and the neocons can find nothing else against this great man shows how desperate they are. Keep smearing Ron and drive whatever chance the party has to win out the window. no pro war, pro bankster, chicken hawk like Newt Romney has a chance to be elected Presideent. Obama will run as the guy who got Bin Laden and is bringing the troops home. Another Bush, Dole, Bush, McCain nominee will finally kill the Republican party for good. Well good riddence to bad rubbish.

Ron Paul has a record of fiscal conservatism and pushing for a sane foreign policy for over 3 decades. Gingrich, Romney and the rest have the consistency of jello except when it comes to kiss the rear end of Abe Foxman and AIPAC

Doctor Right| 12.21.11 @ 8:12AM

The premise of this article, put simply, is stupid.

Whether or not Ron Paul actually penned the garbage that appeared in his newsletter all those years is irrelevant. What's relevant is that his name appeared prominently on the masthead. It was, in essence, HIS newsletter. The use of his name implies, without reservation, his approval of the content that appeared within.

The only alternative is that Paul was utterly unaware of the use of his name on the newsletter -
unlikely, since he's acknowledged it's existence and made a boatload of $$$ from it.

No matter how much he kvetches about it (a nice Yiddish word; irony intended), Paul cannot distance himself from the reality of his past, and if he were to become the GOP nominee, the Dems and the left-wing media would bludgeon him with it.

But of course, the Vatican-Firster brigade members like Jew-Hating Jack and "Cut-n-Paste" Clint (the board's resident clown) rush to Paul's defense with the inevitable cries of "Conspiracy!!!"

The Paul House of Cards is crumbling. If it's due to an orchestrated effort by the GOP, then I say "Bravo!"

Con Chef (NB) | 12.21.11 @ 9:02AM

As usual, Doc, you hit it on the head. Whether he did or didn't write them, or whether or not he knew his ghost writers were writing them, it's that they went out under his name. If an employee of an organization of your's, that bears your name, is writing stuff you don't agree with, you can them & print a retraction/apology/whatever. You don't wait until someone unearths them in a campaign. End of story.

Drunken Sailor| 12.21.11 @ 9:15AM

Exactly right DR. And the thing that the author sweeps under the rug is, if Lew Rockwell wrote them, and he was part of Ron Paul's congressional staff, did he ever address Mr. Rockwell's bigotry?

I know as a manager, if one of my employee's had that kind of attitude and put something with my name on it out there, we would be having a serious counseling session.

Even if Ron Paul had no idea what was put under his name (foolish), you have to ask yourself this.
Why are so many who hold anti-jew sentiments attracted to him? What do they see in him that reminds them of themselves and thus attracts them?

Clint| 12.21.11 @ 10:06AM

"Poll: Paul in top spot in Iowa GOP battle

(CNN) – With 13 days to go until the Iowa caucuses, a new poll indicates that Rep. Ron Paul of Texas sits atop the field of Republican presidential candidates in the state that holds the first contest in the primary and caucus calendar.

According to an Iowa State/Gazette/KCRG survey released Wednesday, 28% of likely Iowa GOP caucus goers say Paul, the longtime congressman who's making his third bid for the White House, is their first choice for the Republican nomination, with 25% backing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Paul's three point margin over Gingrich is well within the survey's sampling error."

If Rube Paul didn't know what was in that newletter, that is stupid of him and shows a lack of control of his Paulbots. That I believe is the true nature of his campaign.

Grzmlyk| 12.21.11 @ 3:29PM

Hands down, the scariest thing about Ron Paul is his followers. If normal Americans supported him, he'd be more palatable to me.

But his followers comprise a band of thugs, miscreants, anti-semites, vengeance seekers and pathetic loners. Very few straight-up Austrians number among his acolytes. It's the crazies and the disturbed who are his most ardent followers (as is obvious to denizen of this site who drills into the comments section of any article that even mentions Ron Paul).

The truth is, this is not about politics for these people. It's about settling scores and the fantasy of stomping on people's faces.

If Paul gets elected (which will never happen), we'll finally have the answer to the question, "What does a dog who chases cars all day do if he actually catches one?"

Occam's Tool| 12.21.11 @ 4:28PM

Mr. G, there's an answer to that question about a dog:

"THUMP. THUMP. CRACK. YELP. THUMP. SQUISH."

America's future under Ron Paul, "Treason's Friend." (Check out his support of Bradley Manning.)

Grzmlyk| 12.21.11 @ 6:02PM

Yes, Occam, I agree. Either the dog lets the car go or he gets dragged to his death.

A President Paul would find himself boxed in by history and the facts on the ground, as they say. Presidents aren't handed blank slates. So he would do one of two things - succumb to realpolitik or go off half cocked with his neo-isolationism (that oughta make Clint's blood boil) - in which case the planet will descend further into chaos and world war (it's headed there anyway, but those who think removing America from the position of global hegemon will make everything ok are kidding themselves).

Whether he wins or loses, the height of the rush his fans are feeling has already hit its high water mark.

If he loses, they'll disappear like kitchen cockroaches in the middle of the night when the light goes on (or else start making their "Paul 2016" posters, when he'll be over 80 years old).

If he wins, the period of his governance would be a disappointing grind - similar to that experienced by all those naive young people who actually bought Obama's snake oil. Three years after "hope and change," those fools have shrugged their shoulders with a collective, "never mind."

Such will be Paul's fate. After two years in office, the Clints and the Jacks of the world will either go back to their 9/11 conspiracy DVDs or else spend their days whining about how nobody will let Ron be Ron.

Boar Hunter| 12.21.11 @ 1:18PM

With behavior that mirror's membership in a cult, Ron Paul supporters are, "focused on a living leader to whom members seem to display excessively zealous, unquestioning commitment."

Cult members share "obsessiveness regarding the leader resulting in the exclusion of almost every practical consideration."

Furthermore, to give him attribute, Steven Hassan, concerning a cults control of information, identified some of the following characteristics (edited for brevity):

1) Use of deception, holding back or distorting information, Outright lying.

2) Extensive use of propaganda.

3) Misquotations or statements taken out of context.

4) Use of "loaded" language (characterized by "thought-terminating clichés"). Words are the tools we use to think with. These "special" words constrict rather than expand understanding. They function to reduce complexities of experience into trite, platitudinous "buzz words".

5) Denial, rationalization, justification, wishful thinking.

6) Chanting (Clint).

7) No critical questions about leader, doctrine, or policy seen as legitimate.

The Ron Paul folks are incapable of accepting the irony of how many of these characteristics they share with cultists. To put it bluntly, Ron Paul supporters are clearly feeble minded drones incapable of independent thought. They are personally dependent on lies and propaganda to buoy an unwarranted and undeserved faith in their leader. If challenged, they attack with "thought-terminating clichés" and "buzz words." If challenged too frequently with facts about their leader being a nut, some will begin "chanting" the same thing over and over like Clint.

Amy| 12.21.11 @ 7:43AM

Wow. According to many comments here I'm a vile racist, anti-semite who doesn't care a whit about child molestation, accountability, greed, lies and avarice.

Strangely, nobody in real life would ever consider me any of those things and knows I care deeply about social issues. I'm a mother, a wife and a scientist who is well-read and am quite experienced in doing research. And strangely, I come to the opposite conclusions after doing that research.

So these comments on this article make me wonder more about the motivation of the commenters than they do about the content of Ron Paul's (or my!) character.

Drunken Sailor| 12.21.11 @ 9:49AM

Amy| 12.21.11 @ 2:51PM

Read some of jack's post (pick one at random) or Clint's cut and paste jobs with a subjective eye and you will understand why people are fed up. Ron paul has some good views. If you really "care deeply about social issues", as you claim, then why would you support Ron Paul? Paul is a social Liberal-tarian who would allow each state to have their own abortion/genocide laws, along with prostitution, illegal drug use, polygamy, gay marriage, and the list goes on and on. According to Paul's logic, the states should have been allowed to have their own laws regarding slavery! Along with Bill Ayres, Code Pink, and Mikey Moore, Ron Paul supports the WikiLeaks traitor and called him a patriot!

Ron Paul is also NOT an original-intent 10th Amendment supporter or a Conservative, he is a capital 'L" Liber-tarian. He actually advocates a return to states rights chaos of the Articles of Confederation that predated our Constitution. Ron Paul is not only a moral relativist, he is also most likely a racist and bigot. You had best do some more "research"...

What they want is simple: An end to the insane Empire that endangers our security, and that has bankrupted us.

They want a foreign policy like Brazil's. Another big country, bordered by weak neighbors and the ocean, and with plenty of oil and other stuff.

Brazil minds its own business. So it spends peanuts on their defense.
And they get...security!

They never lost a war, never been invaded, never been bombed, never worried about atomic war. They dont care about exporting democracy, aiding regimes that have decimated Christianity, or bringing the wonders of legal abortion to the Moslems. Brazil needs no foreign bases, no orange alerts, no body bags.

Since the fall of Soviet Russia, if we had spent what Brazil does on the military, we would be in clover. The greatest threat to our security, our federal debt, would be.......zero!

Perhaps the idea of a suicide car bomber committing mass murder to gain instant entry to Paradise was so foreign to our own values and consciousness that it did not create in us the concern for the marines' safety that it should have.

In the weeks immediately after the bombing, I believed the last thing that we should do was turn tail and leave. Yet the irrationality of Middle Eastern politics forced us to rethink our policy there. If there would be some rethinking of policy before our men die, we would be a lot better off. If that policy had changed towards more of a neutral position and neutrality, those 241 marines would be alive today."

Indy| 12.21.11 @ 11:24AM

Yes, I am painfully aware of the death of our Marines and what Reagan said then. My point is we do not know what he would say now, the threat to the West has grown, would he simply ignore the rise of Radical Islam and the goal of estabilishing a Caliphate and the continuous threat and attempts to kill Americans and others in the West? Would he sit back and do nothing as Iran builds its nuclear program? I've seen your posts, I am well aware of your position, just like you will not change my mind, I will not vote for Ron Paul in the primary, I know that I cannot change your mind so I won't waste my time responding to your further posts

Don| 12.21.11 @ 11:30AM

Do you seriously think Ronald Reagan would have ignored the attack on the WTC and done "nothing"?
My bet is, he would have smashed them hard and fast, and not gotten embroiled in "nation" building, but if you are trying to imply that Reagan would have ignored it, sir, I believe you are quite mistaken.

My goodness but I never knew so many GOPers were so racially conscious, progressive folk. You all must have been horrified when Reagan gave that speech in Philadelphia, MS. I bet the economic conditions of the black community and the incarceration rate must give you all sleepless nights.

And for all the folks talking about personal responsibility, the buck stops here, etc. I'm pretty sure most of you are tolerant of the political and military failures that were, are, and will be the Iraq and Afghanistan boondoggles. Failures, and shirking blame? Let's start with Bush, Cheney, Bremer, and a host of others. And yes, we can't kick that dead horse enough. Maybe once we've collectively yelled j'accuse 4 trillion times.

Brian B| 12.21.11 @ 1:20PM

--My goodness but I never knew so many GOPers were so racially conscious, progressive folk.--

We're neither. Being for a color blind society and against hatred and prejudice are long traditions in conservatism.
It is the progressives and the race conscious who promote division, hatred and treatment based on skin color. It's also the progressives and the race conscious whose roots are traceable to the most despicable racists in our history.
Conservatives also have a long tradition of fighting to throw off the welfare state which has trapped so many of the "black community" in the progressive-created welfare state ghettos of unemployment, broken families, drugs and crime.
Afghanistan, the good war, is now to be laid at the feet of Bush, even though the left supposedly supported it and Barry had had three years to win it?

Grzmlyk| 12.21.11 @ 4:40PM

Well, right up until Obama was elected. Then Iraq and Afghanistan were at the forefront of compassionate liberal geopolitics and part of the most brilliant, forward-looking, nuanced, new-world-order-enabling foreign policy we have ever had in this country, delivered unto us by Our Lord and Savior Jesus Obama Christ.

You may not read the NY times, Time Magazine or Newsweek, and you may not watch ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC or CNN or listen to NPR (but how can you not?) or log into the Daily Kos, Media Matters or what's left of the Huffington Post, "Highly Amused," but don't get up from your couch. I've got your back.

You and me - liberals. The Truly Good People, am I right? I can't wait to start telling someone else how to live their life, how much money they should be allowed to keep, how many concessions they have to make to favored victim groups, what kind of car to drive, how many calories a day they are allowed to consume, what kind of house they can live in, how many kids they can have, how to raise them, what kind of health care they have to have, which religions they must love and which they must hate. Whew! So much power to wield, so little time!

All for the (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) COMMON GOOD, tee hee.

Gosh, being a liberal's fun. Particularly the year-long vacations, when people like you and me - you know, the REALLY GOOD ones - get to live like sultans off of the backs of the taxpayers we've enslaved.

It's good to be a party apparatchick, is it not, comrade?

Hey, is that someone over there thinking for himself? I gotta run, "Amused." That guy looks like he has his own opinions, and you know how antithetical that is to the Great and Glorious State, Obama be Praised and May He Live For Forever, May His Beneficence Shine on Us Forever, etc.

Highly Amused:

I get very, very angry when I continue to see the lie that was spread about the Reagan speech in Philadelphia, MS, during the 1980 presidential campaign. The "lie" that Reagan was speaking "code" to white bigots in that state, in order to obtain racist votes. Reagan himself denounced this angrily in his books.

But the most succinct denunciation of this vile propaganda was written by Deroy Murdock, on the National Review site, on November 19, 2007. It was entitled:

"Reagan, No Racist
Racing through the record"

It's pretty easy to find, if you want to know the truth. Indeed, most of Reagan's speech is quoted in it. But I suspect you're not interested in the truth. You're much more comfortable with the spoon-fed swill you slurp every day.

I am, frankly, fed up with educated Americans who refuse to seek the truth.

Jeremy--You don't even deserve a Mitt-Romney "Nice Try" for this one. Ron Paul is every bit as responsible for those newsletters as you or I or anyone else would be whose name was on the masthead. Why didn't he disavow the letters when they were written? If he truly disagreed with the content, he should have fired all the writers or stopped publication. That he was "too busy" re-establishing his medical practice is a ludicrous excuse. I suppose you believe Barack Obama was too busy community-organizing to know his ghostwriter was a murdering terrorist? Or that his pastor was a liberation-theology spouting communist sympathizer? If you support Ron Paul, fine. Tell us why. But don't insult us by saying he isn't responsible for something that shows up in his own newsletters.

kb| 12.21.11 @ 10:48AM

"We the People" will repudiate their efforts and expose them before American people, and the culture of corruption and abuse of power, has been practiced in the Obama Administration.

Ron Paul is a legend.

Simon Templar| 12.21.11 @ 11:29AM

Lott,

There is a huge difference between allowing a ghost writer to write your biography and hiring people to write articles for you in YOUR regular publication and acting as editor of that publication. Yeah, ask your editor hear if he would not mind if you wrote a piece on how you hate Jews and put his name on it. Ask him if you could do this to help promote the magazine and the his cause. Tell him you have a whole series on the subject. Yeah, you are fired.

If any of the other candidates had done this, you would not be comparing your apples to oranges and attempting to create cover. Paul's supporters would be drop kicking this up the opposing candidates proverbial relentlessly and in mass.

Just look at the idiot, bill here. Ron Paul is a legend. The sycophant worship is sickening and quite frankly un-American. None of these people are legends and I do not want to elect a "legend." We already have someone who can lower the sea levels, we do not need another one.

I can not even imagine what it would be like if Paul did become President. If you think Obama was beyond reproach and criticism, you boy have seen nutt'n.

His supporters are storm troopers and could care less about truth, integrity, or intelellectual honesty. It is about winning and winning at any cost. They have the EXACT same self deluded, arrogant, politically correct posture that LIBERALS have, whereby they dictate what is true and what is false and what is acceptable.

The hypocricy is truly amazing. The paulbots and Ron Paul were perfectly fine with running and supporting Perry's rock problem and charges of racism.

You have offered nothing new in this article than what Paul has already offered which is a denial and a dodge.

Le Cracquere| 12.21.11 @ 12:19PM

Since the initial newsletter kerfuffle in 2008, I doubted that Paul actually penned the passages at issue. Maybe he saw them or knew about them, and maybe he didn't.

The prize-winning question, though, is this: what the hell kind of candidate attracts fans and volunteers LIKE the actual scribe in such numbers? What the hell kind of man attracts cheerleaders like his in such numbers, and in such apparent proportions to the whole?

If I had a fan base, and if it resembled Paul's in the slightest, I'd be disinclined to show my face in public, much less have the gall to run for office. His shamelessness and complaisance about his sources of support are disqualifying scandal enough--rather than vindicating him, the newsletter story exemplifies this problem. He may never have written such things, but he'll play footsie with people who do, and ride their sentiments to office if he can. The man's poison.

Drunken Sailor| 12.21.11 @ 3:00PM

PETER KILLIE| 12.21.11 @ 1:07PM

Who cares whether or not Paul actually wrote the newsletters? All we need know is that he allowed that tripe to appear under his name and profited from their sale. Either way he has no chance at being president of the United States; and that is a good thing.

" Poll: Paul in top spot in Iowa GOP battle

(CNN) – With 13 days to go until the Iowa caucuses, a new poll indicates that Rep. Ron Paul of Texas sits atop the field of Republican presidential candidates in the state that holds the first contest in the primary and caucus calendar.

According to an Iowa State/Gazette/KCRG survey released Wednesday, 28% of likely Iowa GOP caucus goers say Paul, the longtime congressman who's making his third bid for the White House, is their first choice for the Republican nomination, with 25% backing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Paul's three point margin over Gingrich is well within the survey's sampling error"

The Atlantic has a pretty good take on this issue today.

Paul seems like a decent sort, reminds me a lot of the WWII generation folks I grew up around in western Pennsylvania. I think it's fair to say that nearly every candidate and political movement has its basement-dwellers, kooks and loons, but even more so when the movement is outside the mainstream--it goes with the territory. What's sad to me is that principled Constitutionalism has been marginalized by both major parties. The fact that following our Constitution is NOT mainstream says more about the GOP and the Dems than it does about Ron Paul.

Mike Hawk| 12.21.11 @ 1:36PM

Of course, we will all answer "for every thought, word, and deed" on that Great Gettin' Up Mornin,' so it's good to remind folks that, say, if they backed a war that was disastrous, immoral, illegal, unconstitutional, and liable to plunder and profit for themselves, they might think about writing a confession and send it on to the American Spectator.

What I find hilarious is this: all they can find to vex about with Ron Paul is something that somebody else did twenty years ago. Now, Newt? Newt's been good to me, but really, we don't have to go back twenty years -- in fact, it's usually about twenty **minutes** -- to inspect his vain frivolities and autosoteriology (which means, in his case, self-salvation by self-exculpation by brazen and obnoxious assertion).

We know Mitt's sins, they're wracking the health care system in Massachusetts, and he has surrounded himself with all of Bush's failed retreads.

But Ron Paul? Amazing how the Prestige Press never mentions his positions as they rule his positions out of the Republican "mainstream." Now, if they said he was out of the Republican **establishment," "Hot tub," or "Trough," I could see their point. But the deadwater in the mainstream? Really?

So strain at gnats, while domestic power-hungry monsters with all the answers beckon you from Mitt Scylla and Newt Charybdis. Enjoy the plunge.

Ron| 12.21.11 @ 2:32PM

Dr. Paul can "disavow" all of the prior writings, but as Jack and Clint want to say constantly, about how their guy is stand-up and takes responsibilities...He now owns the writings, good or bad, and whether he actually did or did not write the material.

It is the burden of command, at least what I learned in OCS...You are completely and personally responsible for everything that goes on under your command, whether you were there when it occurred. I know that is probably foreign to your thinking, but y'all are always crowing about Dr. Paul being an "Air Force Officer"...apparently, he did not learn about the burden of command while in the Air Force.

Occam's Tool| 12.21.11 @ 4:36PM

Paul wasn't in command. He was an MD---rank given to allow Medical Officers appropriate privileges for their position. There was one US Medical General Officer who acted as a commander, and he was roundly criticized by other General Officers for doing so.

You really need to be sitting in a darkened room listening to secret radio messages being sent through your dental fillings to believe that Ron Paul can win a national election. Unwrap the aluminum foil from around your head, pull up the shades, and wake up. If the Republican Party completely loses its grip on reality and in a fit of insanity nominates Paul than the only certainity is that Obama will win a second term and we will be faced with a BHO presidency unfettered by re-election concerns. That would be the true disaster.

" Vote 2012: Ron Paul Takes Lead in KCRG/Gazette/ISU Poll

Mitt Romney came in at 17.5 percent, up from 16.3.

What kind of people is Ron Paul hiring and associating with that they think he would be okay with having racist remarks published in his name, not once, but multiple times over the years?

Is this a pattern that will continue to reoccur in the White House if he is elected. Of President Bush people asked what did he know and when did he know it. We want to hold Erik Holder responsible for Fast and the Furious, though he claimed to have not read his emails, yet Ron Paul gets a pass on racist comments in his newsletter under the similar pretext that he didn't write or read them?

The racism charge need not stick but the pattern of irresponsibility for what he has ownership over and who he entrusts with his name and reputation should give people cause for concern.

Osamas Pajamas| 12.21.11 @ 11:45PM

Paul is responsible for every word published by his agents under his byline, over his signature, or in his name. But as bad as his uncritical oversight of the subject newsletters may have been, worse is his idea of defense and foreign policy. I think he'd make a very interesting domestic policy bulldog --- not as President --- but surely as a very prominent advocate within a Republican administration, handling the waste, fraud and abuse portfolio. Libertarians [myself included] yearn for the ascendancy of their ideas, but let's not forget that the importance of these ideas transcends the personalities of those who claim to pursue them --- and a libertarian President up against a Congress of spendtrhift scoundrels and a mixed-bag Supreme Court would make very little progress in the right direction. When the grassroots change, the culture and the government change.

Osamas Pajamas| 12.21.11 @ 11:49PM

I'll bet anyone a dollar that the corrupt, compliant, spineless, sycophantic Democrat-captured media has long known all about this damaging material. They've been promoting Paul's candidacy and it would not surprise me in the slightest to discover that a lot of the money going to Ron Paul is donated by Democrats [or worse]. Two ploys obtrude --- 1] Paul gets the Republican nomination and then the media publish all this crap from Paul's newsletters and misc writings [and destroy his candidacy], or 2] Paul doesn't get the Republican nomination but instead becomes the Libertarian third party candidate, thus splitting the anti-OhBummer vote. Either of these scenarios seems likely to guarantee Barak Hushpuppy OhBummer and the OhBummer Wrecking Crew another four years in which to wreck America. In short, Ron Paul is a spoiler, and while [non-isolationst] libertarian ideals are great and highly desirable --- we don't need Ron Paul in order to promote them successfully.

Mark| 12.22.11 @ 1:43PM

I'd hold off on the claim he made a million dollars per year. I've not seen any evidence that backs up this "claim" to date.

You misconstrue his opposition to portions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that infringe on property rights as being against ALL civil rights laws.

Regardless, both men put these publications out and then said they had no idea what was in them. Ford was pilloried and eventually sued regarding the Independent.
