Obama’s Crude Chutzpah
Our president’s ideological and intellectual laziness is a job killer.
Over the weekend at the Asia-Pacific Economic Coperation (APEC) Summit in Honolulu, President Obama raised a few eyebrows when he criticized a lack of ingenuity on the part of Americans in attracting foreign investment:
But we’ve been a little bit lazy, I think, over the last couple of decades. We’ve kind of taken for granted — well, people will want to come here and we aren’t out there hungry, selling America and trying to attract new business into America.
President Obama’s choice of words was at best peculiar and at worst pedantic. Forty-eight hours earlier, the Obama Administration delayed approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline until after the 2012 election. The Keystone XL Pipeline, which would transport crude oil from the oil sands in northern Alberta into the United States as well as U.S. domestic oil, is being built by TransCanada, which is based in Calgary. The last time I checked Canada is a foreign country. Ergo this would constitute foreign investment. Apparently, President Obama’s appetite for foreign investment isn’t as insatiable as he would have us believe. Talk about chutzpah in its crudest form.
The Keystone XL is actually an extension of the existing Keystone Pipeline that went into operation in 2008. The extension would have been twofold. First, the pipeline that currently ends in Oklahoma would be extended into the Gulf Coast of Texas. Second, the pipeline would be extended from its starting point in Hardisty, Alberta, and run through Montana and South Dakota before joining up with the existing pipeline in Nebraska.
The pipeline extension faced opposition from environmentalists, many of whom took their protest to the White House. Most of the opposition to the extension of the pipeline is centered in Nebraska where there are concerns that the pipeline could contaminate the groundwater in the Ogallala Aquifer that encompasses the Nebraska Sandhills. However, a report produced by the State Department back in August concluded the extension of the pipeline would have little environmental impact. But in facing a difficult bid for re-election next year, Obama dismissed reason and chose to placate the passions of the environmentalists. For its part, TransCanada has pledged to work with the State Department in looking at alternate routes for extending the pipeline but emphasizes that time is of the essence:
Keystone XL is shovel-ready. TransCanada is poised to put 20,000 Americans to work to construct the pipeline — pipe fitters, welders, mechanics, electricians, heavy equipment operators, the list goes on. Local businesses along the pipeline route will benefit from the 118,000 spin-off jobs Keystone XL will create through increased business for local restaurants, hotels and suppliers.
However, some believe this “delay” represents the death knell of the pipeline extension. Christopher Helman of Forbes writes:
So the Obama administration rejected Keystone XL. Oh sure, they want us to think it’s just a delay, a kicking of the Keystone can down the road. Officially, the state department just sent TransCanada back to the drawing board to look at a variety of other pipeline routes that do their best to avoid the Sandhills in Nebraska and areas overlaying the Ogawalla Aquifer. But don’t be fooled. This is a rejection plain and simple.
In the process of selecting the proposed route, TransCanada plotted and studied 14 different pipeline paths and submitted 10,000 pages of environmental studies. They’ve already studied this thing to death. So when the state department says this new review could be done by early 2013, can we really expect any different outcome than more delays?
All of which brings me back to President Obama. Consider what he had to say at a Democratic Party fundraiser in San Francisco last month:
Anybody been to Beijing Airport lately? Or driven on high-speed rail in Asia or Europe? What’s changed? Well, we’ve lost our ambition, our imagination, and our willingness to do the things that built the Golden Gate Bridge and Hoover Dam and unleashed all the potential in this country.
Who does President Obama think he’s kidding? As Thomas Purcell points out, it took more than fifteen years for the Golden Gate Bridge to be built largely because of stonewalling on the part of the federal government:
Construction did not go as smoothly as planned. It takes another FIVE years for the government and the architects to come to agreement on the design. Furthermore, Federal contractor unions wanted the contracts to build the bridge and stalled the government on the issue, demanding they take action to halt construction unless they got the contract. Fortunately, local authorities insisted that as part of the contract only local labor would be used instead of Federal union contracts, insuring the area had work during Depression era unemployment.
And at the risk of conjuring up the image of Rachel Maddow wearing a hard hat, there is no way on God’s green earth the Hoover Dam would have be built in Barack Obama’s America. If there was a proposal on the table to divert the Colorado River, you could be sure that Robert Redford, Robert Kennedy, Jr. and Darryl Hannah would be there to oppose it faster than you could say, “Splash!” As the Economist recently put it:
It was hard enough back then to overcome the rivalries of the seven states involved, but at least nobody gave a fig for the down-river rights of the south-western Indians, let alone the Mexicans, or the creatures whose habitats were eradicated when the river was damned. Today a rampart of federal legislation, such as the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act, would block the way.
At the risk of being crude, if President Obama was just a little less lazy about his economic policies and his knowledge of American history, then perhaps we wouldn’t find ourselves in this sorry state of affairs.

The apparent danger to this Republic grows and a reversal cannot come soon enough and may already be too late. Can we truly afford to wait, sitting on our hands until the election?

While the whole world is watching, as the OWS (obamas willing slaves) so proclaim, they are in fact taking measure of what this fraud represents, and I have to believe they too, are informed as to what this pretender-n-theif represents, its not the America they have known, and it will be restored, come high waters of hell itself. We desperately need to develop our own energy resources.
(How does Obama think those cool things in other countries get built? Imagination and desire will get you a great bit of the way. Beyond that, you need a government that will give the green light. Duh.)

But we'll send money to Brazil and Mexico to drill deep in that Gulf we share with them.

This isn't pedantry; this is national suicide. He isn't teaching in a college anymore.
He may be intellectually lazy, and he may be more of a politician than I credit him to be. He may be more "useful idiot" than true ideologue.
But it doesn't matter which is true. His actions, as are so many of his "speeches" are profound -- profound "nothings" that have terrible consequences (also "nothings").
And we are left with a sense of the awful weight and waste of "nothing."
Now that little play with Shakespeare is Pedantic.
But Obama? There's nothing pedantic about a POTUS saying we're lazy while refusing to let business and America flourish.

If he really were a university sophomore who was majoring in Sports and Entertainment Prelaw and minoring in sociology, but spending all his time in the university pub or on the golf course, THEN he could be characterized as lazy. A man who is 30 years out of university who still holds these views is STUPID. (My sainted Daddy described stupidity as *militant ignorance* -- that is one does not know, one knows one does not know, one does not WANT to know.) Funny that a guy who wants to scale back tax benefits to business aircraft and prevent the assembly of a modern commercial airliner in a right-to-work state should highlight the Beijing Airport.
Then again, he’s more in favor of their state-driven economic model than the chaotic one he sees in the US. As for dams, there won’t be another built ever in the US thanks to his green allies.

Chutzpah is right! If Americans are softer and lazier than in previous generations, who bears the responsibility for this? Is is freedom-loving, free-market-oriented, conservative capitalists or is it the socialists like Obama whose path to political power has been maintained by maximizing dependency on government and encouraging as many as possible to become wards of the state? Liberals/progressives/leftists/socialists, whatever they want to call themselves, have been draining the energy and dynamism out of our culture for decades. If we are indeed a dispirated nation in decline, they are the cause of it. So it takes a lot of nerve for this twit of a president to start finger-pointing now.

As everyone has indicated, Obama is not that smart to be playing an intelligent political play on his own. Obama has handlers, the same ones that got him elected. People like George Soros, the Sandlers, and Peter Lewis. These people get rich betting against America. Don't discount the possibility for canceling this pipeline that it will reward people like this who have placed big bets on alternative energies, even including natural gas. Reduced oil supplies, forces us to other sources of energy.
Simply, Obama is just implementing the plans of his handlers, and he is being rewarded by the them. Don't believe for a minute that they will do whatever it takes to get him re-elected.

This pipeline construction [and the economy, stock markets, business activity in general] will be initiated only after [or in anticipation of] 11/4/12 when a Republican nominee is elected president. Recent economic projections are for a further downtown of economic activity next year, and same is totally a reflection of businesses' disgust/fear of these moronic street merchants that are now in control of this country sadly. Once it becomes obvious next year that Republicans will become elected to national office, economic/financial activity will then increase, in anticipation that this one-termned seizure process of our country has finally been eliminated!!!!!!!

Can't remember what Rick Perry said (but neither can he) in that debate, but if I had my 'druthers, the 3 agencies I would eliminate would be the Environmental Protection Agency, the Dept of Energy and the Dept of Education. Can you imagine how fast 'lazy America' would wake up and start creating jobs if we could: (a) Use our own natural resources; (b) dig and drill for our own energy, and (C) get back to educating our kids in things like math and science instead of multiculturalism and anti-bullying???

What really, really fascinates me about this particular sample of the Professor's boilerplate is that, in an apparent effort to describe the demon business world, the Professor fairly succeeds in describing rather a big chunk of the only universe he knows: lefty academia.
And, as usual, he's lying, since that very "approach," which he grandiloquently claims "won't get you where you want to go," has taken him exactly where he wants to go. For in his pursuit of moral and financial poverty for the rest of us, the Professor is himself without any "poverty of ambition" whatever.
To quote Bugs Bunny: "What a joik! What an embezzle!" And now back to a quickie Looney Tunes repast before grading more papers.

Tens of millions of big lefty money came into Nebraska to block the Keystone. Everyone that lives in this area is very aware of the Oglala Aquifier and it's importance to multi-state agriculture. The reality is that there has been a pipeline crossing the Aquifier for decades with no unfortunate incidents. Even local newspeople failed to get that story out. Unemployment is always low in Nebraska, but folks outside the two metro areas survive by their wits because jobs are very scarce.

Why does the tea party label everything they don't like as "job killing"? These same people have created the tea party pledge, asking business owners not to hire anyone until Obama is voted out. Who is the job killer? Aside from that I too hate Obamacare, But that is because I favor actual Universal Health Care.
I thought true conservative "patriots" are supposed to show MORE deference to the traditional American institutions. Guess they don't mind hypocrisy and double standards. The usual fare among hyper-partisan right-wingers. People who claim that Obama is a Marxist, socialist etx. only prove that they do not know one bloody thing about socialism. He is a tool for American financial banks!
