And repeatedly — in every single debate — it is the
now-68-year-old battle-scarred Newt Gingrich who emerges precisely
as the battle-scarred Winston Churchill suddenly emerged in 1939
and 1940. Suddenly Republicans — like frightened and angry British
Conservatives before them so many decades ago — find themselves
looking at a man who has been scorned as was Churchill. The
“brilliant failure” derided as a “genius without judgment” turns
out to be the man of hard earned wisdom with rock hard principles
and the best judgment after all. The man once seen as “erratic” is
suddenly recognized as the man whose bone-deep understanding of
history, strategy and human nature gives him the steely ability to
see over the horizon while all around him are essentially blind.
And displays the supreme virtue of being unafraid to
act.
So.
What do all these polls showing Newt Gingrich on the rise
actually mean? What is it that a growing number of Republican
voters are asking after each of these debates?
They appear to be asking the American 2011 version of what
the British people abruptly found themselves asking in that long
ago summer of 1939.
What price Gingrich?
Shamus| 11.15.11 @ 7:02AM
Gingrich may not be electable. He's working harder to connect with voters, but he still comes off as cold at some level. If voters can get over this, then my guess is he'd be a good president.
Jack in Wi| 11.15.11 @ 8:11AM
Voters will never get over Newt and all his problems and lies. The Democrats won't let them. He couldn't be elected dog catcher in Georgia or any other part of the USA. One good thing about a Gingrich Nomination is that is would finally lead to a new, vialble 3rd party. No rabid warmonger, chickenhawk will ever be elected President again. Obama awill be running as the guy who got Bin Laden and is bringing our troops home. Of course we all know that is a lie.but sure is a lot better then a couple chickenhawks like Romney and Gingrich calling for endless wars and endless bailouts.
The Neocons are the grave diggers of the Republican Party. The Party and the conservative movement can never recover until these guys are kicked out. Let them go back to the Democrats, and Trotskyite Communists from which they came.

The Paul campaign has just released quotes from Gingrich in which he forthrightly condemns torture as a tactic. Newt is worse flip flopper then even Romney. The book on old Newt is three feet thick and full of so many contradictions that the Democrats will have fun picking them apart everyday. Newt has been an inconsistant blabber mouth his whole career. Newt has been happily married to same woman for a good decade. And he plans to stay married to her. Yes, he's been through two divorces. So what? Rush Limbaugh has been through three, and I don't hear anyone yapping about Rush's "baggage."
As for ego, you don't think Churchill had one? Read your history books. Newt has his shortcomings -- he's way too soft on immigration, for example -- but he's got a lot to recommend him as well.

It is highly unlikely Newt will be the nominee. Too much baggage even if you leave aside the fiction the left has concocted about him.
To say Newt is not in the class of Churchill would actually be a compliment. The stupidity of Chamberlain, combined with Churchill's bellicosity, bankrupted the UK and cost them the empire. The hypocrisy of accepting the Soviet Union as an ally when they were part of the conspiracy to partition Poland was utterly unconscionable. That is a permanent stain on the Churchill's memory.
If all Newt has against him is a bit of adultery and three wives, then he'll do well in the comparison with Churchill.
Let's hope we don't get another Neocon POTUS. As it it stands, however, the only choices we have are a moonbat, a gaggle of Neocons and Paul. Paul is at least talking about what really needs doing to FedGov. The rest are just a status quo bunch. heaven help us.

sirbourbon| 11.15.11 @ 9:06PM
A sampling of Gingrich's liberal positions and his shameless teaming up with anti-American establishment types like Nancy Pelosi and Bill Clinton to overthrow the American republic:
1. Gingrich helped garner support to create President Jimmy Carter’s Department of Education in 1979. Educational standards have plummeted. Newt's answer was more funding for the dumbing down of kids department: Gingrich’s Republican Congress increased education funding by $3.5 billion in 1996, the largest single increase in history.
2. Foreign Aid — Gingrich voted numerous times throughout his 20 years in Congress to increase and expand unconstitutional foreign aid and trade. He supported both subsidized trade with the Soviets and federally funded loans to foreign governments through the Export-Import Bank. Between 1994 and 1995, Gingrich voted for $44.8 billion in foreign aid. He also helped push through federally funded loan guarantees to China. China, gthat murderous communist regime is the largest holder of U.S. debt in the world.
3. NAFTA and GATT — In 1993, Gingrich made himself invaluable to Clinton and the Democrats in Congress when he twisted Republican arms to back the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) which contributed to oursourcing and joblessness in America.
Newt stood by the bankers in pushing for the creation of the World Trade Organization (WTO). As Minority Whip, he could have postponed the lame-duck vote on GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) that subjected Americans to the WTO.
Gingrich’s Benedict Arnold GATT act helped to hand over the power to regulate foreign commerce, a power reserved in the Constitution to Congress alone, to an internationally controlled body, making America’s economic interests entirely at the mercy of the WTO.
Gingrich said of GATT: “We need to be honest about the fact that we are transferring from the United States at a practical level significant authority to a new organization.... This is not just another trade agreement. This is adopting something which twice, once in the 1940s and once in the 1950s, the U.S. Congress rejected.... It is a very big transfer of power.”
Gingrich’s supported the $30 billion Violent Crime and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 that shackled gun owners with new restrictions, federalized a number of crimes, and handed the feds police powers that the Constitution reserves to the states.
Gingrich’s supports abortion and anti-family measures, federal welfare, a presidential line item veto, the National Endowment for the Arts, confiscation of private property, amnesty for illegal immigrants, higher taxes, and a myriad of other unconstitutional legislation.
Futurist
In 1994, Gingrich described himself as “a conservative futurist.” in which the future will embrace abortion, homosexuality, promiscuity, and divorce as perfectly normal, even virtuous. Newt loved Alvin Toffler who penned a letter to America’s “founding parents,” in which he said: “The system of government you fashioned, including the very principles on which you based it, is increasingly obsolete, and hence increasingly, if inadvertently, oppressive and dangerous to our welfare. It must be radically changed and a new system of government invented — a democracy for the 21st century.” He went on to describe our constitutional system as one that “served us so well for so long, and that now must, in its turn, die and be replaced.”
Newt sat down with Pelosi to push more government under the guise of fighting "global warming."

Occam: Churchill was a masssive flop in most of what he wanted to do in his life. He flopped in a terrible way as first Lord of the Admiralty, in both pushing England into the war with Germany, and at Gallipolli. He was a flop when he ran the Treasury and had to be removed. He was a flop at Narvik in his second term as First Lord. He was a flop in his war goals of saving the British empire and containing Stalin. He broke his country and the world had a 50 year cold war. He was a flop as the leader of the Conservative party who lost the 1945 election in a landslide. He had never been elected and the people wanted hin gone. He did win a slight victory in 1951 when the people were sick to death of the Socialism. He was a flop in that he never reversed anything. He was a flop as a father. He wasn't a bad writer, although like Gingrich he was windy and overblown.
Gingrich is a flop period, and totally unelectable. The puff going on right now is all the result of the neocon media pushing him. Let the chickenhawk, neocon losers and their chickenhawk mouthpieces alike Limbaugh, Hannity and O' Blarney go fight these wars. A few more flops for Churchill. As Colonial Secretary he drew the borders of Iraq which have led to 90 years of ethnic turmoil. He also used poison gas droppedfrom airplanes on poor Iraqi tribes people. He thought that gas was a cheap. way to keep these people in line while the British stole their oil. If Saddam Hussian was a monster what was Churchill? He was the first to bomb Berlin. He wanted to enrage Hitler to attack London. It was a good tactic to keep the pro peace party on the defensive. He was an awful person who led his country over the cliff many times It is good that there are a lot more critical studies of his actions coming out. no leaders were more loved by the Jews then Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill. They got nothing from any of them but fine talk and little action. Place not your faith in men but in the One True God. Shalom.

Saved the country from another Great Depression, saved the Auto Industry, provided for the 99er's unemployed, while adding to the diversity of America with the repeal of DADT. Oh, not to mention near-universal healthcare reform and re-regulation of the financial industry to protect Americans's health and money.

Housing is a mess with millions of homes in foreclosure. Dodd-Frank is destroying businesses. Home mortgages are nearly impossible to obtain. Really?
Let's see:
1. He took Osama Bin Laden. Sure, he did well there, with intelligence obtained from water boarding, which he considers torture and stopped once in the presidency.
2. Instigated Qaddafi’s removal. Leading from behind to be sure, effective, no? Except that the people in charge now are Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Qaeda types.
3. Instigated Egyptian uprising. Great, he removed a “friendly” dictator and now who’s in charge in Egypt? The Muslim Brotherhood. Do you see a pattern here?
4. He’s preparing the end of the Iraq war and Afghan war next. I can’t give you the first one, the Iraq war was “over” before he became president. Now, the Afghan war…Well, Karzai is now allied with the Taliban, so, how is that exactly safer? Oh and about Iraq, were supposed to leave but still have a military presence in the region. Obama couldn’t even negotiate for our soldier not to be tried as war criminals, so we are tucking our tails and leaving. Who do you think is salivating to take over? Iran anyone?
5. Saved the country for another Great Depression. Really? Is that like the “jobs saved” narrative? When he started in 2009, the unemployment was 7%, he told us that without stimulus package it would go over 8%. Two stimuli later, and we’ve been over 9% or a couple of year now. And don’t start me about that 9%, if we remove all the accounting gimmicks they are using, we really are at 13%.
6. Saved the auto industry. By giving it away to the unions and the Italians. Pray, do you know what cars are keeping the auto industry alive? SUV’s. Yes, exactly what Obama wanted, right?
7. Provided for the 99er’s unemployed. I’m one of them. He provided sh*t. I have spent all my savings to keep my family under a roof.
8. Adding to the diversity of America with the repeal of DADT. How about combat effectiveness? In case you don’t know it, the function of the army is not to provide diversity, but to kill people and break things. Repealing DADT just make their job much more difficult.

" With the intense search for a conservative alternative to Mitt Romney producing popularity “bubbles” for Rick Perry and Herman Cain, “Who’s next?” has been the recurring question. In an ironic twist, the consensus answer seems to be: Newt Gingrich.
I say “ironic” because the opposition to Romney has been led by conservative grassroots writers and activists, as well as groups like FreedomWorks. Gingrich isn’t much more popular among that contingent than Romney. In May, when Gingrich sharply criticized Paul Ryan’s Medicare reform plan, FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey reminded National Review that Gingrich had been a serial offender:
Citing Gingrich’s support of Dede Scozzafava in the 2009 congressional election in New York’s 23rd district, his backing of Medicare Part D and TARP, and his commercial with Nancy Pelosi about climate change, Armey observes that “Newt entered the race with serious ground to make up with these 2 million Tea Party activists.”…
Brendan Steinhauser, director of Federal and State Campaigns for FreedomWorks, reports that the Tea Partiers he’s talked to are “irate” at Gingrich… “I never met a single Tea Party activist that supported Newt Gingrich for president,” he adds."

The Constitution has done that for us.
(My kids both had the same eighth grade history teacher in Colorado. He taught them different years, but his anti-conservative, anti-capitalist, hate America rhetoric was the same. He told my boys that the word "conservative" originated in the south with those who wanted to conserve slavery!

When I told him that southern democrats were the slave masters and that Lincoln was a republican and that "conservative" comes from wanting to conserve the Constitution...He believed me.

In fact, with every debate, it's as if the rest of his companions have become the shadows and he stands alone, the only presence worth listening to. He is riveting and commands attention. And can anyone doubt that on a stage with Obama, he alone has the verbal skills and command of history to pulp the little bastard in the White House?

How apropos!
Al Gore invoked Winson Churchill in his fight on the environment:
"The Nobel Peace Prize winning environmental campaigner compared the battle against climate change to the fight against Hitler in the Second World War.
Mr Gore, whose Oscar winning film An Inconvenient Truth helped bring the issue to a mass audience, said similar efforts to those of the 1940s would be needed to build support to cut carbon dioxide emissions.
"Winston Churchill aroused this nation in heroic fashion to save civilisation in World War Two," he said.
"We have everything we need except political will, but political will is a renewable resource."
Think Nancy Pelosi, park bench and no proof whatsoever of climate change.
Jack in Wi| 11.15.11 @ 7:50AM
Newt thinks he is Winnie Churchill, but like almost all neocons, he has never been near a battle field. Winnie for all his faults was willing to put his keister on the line. The Neocons love Winston Churchill who led his country into 2 world wars and refused peace deals in both of them that would have saved the Empire and a lot of lives. Winnie led his country over the cliff to bankruptcy and a broken up Empire and the Neocon, chicken hawks, are doing the same here.

Who cares if he was an Air Force captain. If he were an officer worth a shit, he'd have stayed & put in his 20, retiring as an O-6 Colonel. But it just seems as if Ron used the Air Force to pay for his med school. Just like he uses useful idiots like you to fund his upcoming retirement.

All graduates of residency training enter active duty at the rank of Captain (O-3). Most of the US Air Force Academy graduates pursue a career as an Air Force physician, while the vast majority of HPSP graduates leave the service as soon as their commitment is completed.
The Air Force also recruits fully trained and practicing physicians to enter active duty. Their rank at entry is based on their experience.
Considering Paul went to medical school at Duke University looks like he most likely came in at O-2 or O3. Meaning he advanced at the most one whole rank.

So, tell me: will you be voting for Obama in a Gingrich vs Obama matchup?
Clint| 11.15.11 @ 7:10AM
The RINO-CINO Gingrich Endorsed Dede Scoozafava.
Scozzafava is an abortion rights advocate who favors gay marriage. It would be one thing if Scozzafava balanced that social liberalism with fiscal conservatism. But as a state assemblywoman, she voted for massive tax increases, Democratic budgets and a $180 million state bank bailout. She also supported the trillion-dollar federal stimulus package — which every House Republican voted against.
Scozzafava’s husband is a leading upstate New York union organizer. She supports the federal “card-check” legislation that would massively boost union rolls — and Democratic voting rolls — at the expense of rank-and-file workers’ free choice. And for that matter, at the expense of Republican electoral prospects. Card check is the key to a Democratic majority in perpetuity. Big Labor bosses have said as much."

Neewt and Winnie have a lot in common. Both were rabid Zionists their whole political career. Winnie was the Colonial Secretry when Palistine was set up to be the Jewish homeland. Both lived lavish life styles and needed support from friendly Zionists when their extravagence got them in hot water. Winnie was bailed out by his pal Bernard Baruch one of the richest and most influenial Zionist of his era. Newt's 2nd wife worked for a Zoinist front group. Newt has always had lavish support from the Zionist network his whole politial career.
Both Winnie and Newt were and in the case of Newt still is horrible warmongers. Winnie nand Newt never met a war they didn't love. Winnie was very phyically brave and took part in many battles. He was a trained soldier and had been a top military bureaucrat for much of his career. Newt on the other hand is a rabid chickenhawwk who has never been near a battle field. He reminds me of his old buddy Dick Cheney who loved war, but never had the time to fight in one.
Churchill vowed that he did not become the Kings Prime Minister to see the destruction of the British Empire. Well the wars he had desired and led the country into [WW1 and WW2 ] bankrupted the Empire and led to it's end.
When I was a child the map of the British Empire covered over 25% of the Earth's surface. Today the Empire is England and Wales. Scotland wants out as well. England and Wales are about the size of Wi. Newt and the warmonger neoconservatives who have puffed him, will leave the USA in a similar position, broke and broken up.
Doctor Right| 11.15.11 @ 7:40AM
There is the brink of insanity, and then there's the abyss...and Jack is in it.
To state that Churchill "wanted war" is stupid beyond words. Was he anti-fascist and anti-Communist? Certainly, and rightly so. But he didn't pursue war; he simply understood that it was inevitable.
To claim that Churchill was a "Zionist" is also stupid. Palestine was a British colony. Jewish partisans bombed the King David hotel in Jerusalem. Churchill was no fan of Zionism.
Additionally, Churchill was not even PM in 1948 when Israel was recognized as an independent nation, having been succeeded by Clement Attlee. It was Attlee who oversaw the dissolution of the Empire, including India, Ceylon, Burma, and Pakistan. You probably liked Attlee, Jack...he was weak, inneffectual, and clueless on foreign policy, just like Ron Paul.
But since you know SO MUCH more about history, Jack, I guess you already know all of this, right?
Riiiiight....
And Jack...here's another question for your great brain. Since the Jews have always controlled the money supply and manipulated whole Empires, how come Israel didn't reappear until 1948???
Jack in Wi| 11.15.11 @ 7:58AM
The story of Churchill and his rabid Zionsim is well known to everyone who has studied his life. His bailouts by Baruch are also well known. Churchill was just another bribed Zionist flunky in the 30's pushing the war line, just like Gingrich is today. At least Churchill was phyiscally brave and fought in many battles. Newt is just another old chickehawk wanting young people to die for his delusions.
Doctor Right| 11.15.11 @ 8:15AM
Jack...You're certifiably nuts.
I guess the Jews in Europe had it coming, right?
On second thought, you're probably a Holocaust Denier...
Jack in Wi| 11.15.11 @ 9:00AM
Hitler was a monster, but the Holocaust was not inevitable. Hitler offered the British a fair deal in both 1939 when he conquered
Poland and in 1940 when he conquered France. He wanted a full peace with England. The Jews would have to leave his empire of course, but they would have been alive. The British empire offered to take 500,000 Jews. But the Zionists refused the offer and demanded that they be sent to Palistine. Hitler didn't want to upset the Arabs so he refused that deal. The Holocaust was not started until 1942 when Hitler finally decided that there wasn't going to be a peace deal and if he was going down he would kill every Jew he could get his hands on.
The smart thing to do would have been to accept Hitler's deal and get those poor Jews out of danger. Churchill and his Zionist buddies with their demand to keep the war going left 8 million Jews in the hands of Hitler. By the way the anti Zionist Jewish webbsites do a pretty good job of detailing this story. So does Pat Buchanan in his books, as well as other authors.
Con Chef (NB) | 11.15.11 @ 9:35AM
Your quoting of Pat Buchannan, who's been roundly laughed at for his perspectives on this subject doesn't do much to strengthen your argument. Unless your argument is pro-Hitler/Chamberlain. Which it always seems to be.
"I know more about history and current events then anyone on this site including the editors. You Dr. Wrong are a dunce on all subjects. I live by the word the truth will set you free. I say to you liar, liar, pants on fire."

Jack, your astonishing belief that the Allies should have accepted Hitler's "peace offer" -- the offer of a man who reneged on the promises of "no further territorial demands" that he made after the Sudentenland, after Austria, after swallowing the rest of Czechoslovakia -- put in sharp perspective the utter naivite and folly of the foreign policy you and your idols espouse, and your belief that benevolent Iran poses no threat to anyone. My view as of now-always subject to change is this:
Given the field that we have here is my list of preferences and why:
Gingrich, has a lot of "baggage" but of the candidates I think he has the potential to be the most hard hitting combatant against Obama personally in debates and also against the MSM and he showed that in the last debate. He know more than enough and is qualified both in domestic and foreign affairs to be a leader on these matters. The thing is he has not been tested which means smeared by the Socialists. If he can behave as he did in the debate towards that jack ass interlocur --whatever his name was--you know the one with the snarly smile ? If he can handle that sort of thing and he shows a vision that makes snese for this nation I can support him.
Romney has had it easy--I saw a hit piece in the NYT the other day on him but I really do not read the NYT. Rd on Romney Care is an issue and he has a tendency to show how clever he is by saying things that people want to hear.
For Gingrich to top Romney he must show a steel like ability to deal with the Left and a vision that makes sense and is consistent.
Ron Paul I would never vote for --ever and same with John Huntsman.
Rick Perry to be President has to act Presidential even in these assinine debates. He just has not and that puts me off
Cain is very weak in foreign policy and national security. His vision is too limited.
Bachman and Santorum must be more motivated and work outside the box of the debate format and Media formats to get attention and stop complaining.
Gingrich as potential to be a leader and perhaps a great one. He needs to show it and we will be watching.
Mike Rogers | 11.15.11 @ 8:30AM
I am grudgingly coming around to the view that Newt may be "it". I, too remember the real scandals (Scozzafava and the Pelosi couch), as well as the fake media scandals like the divorce papers.
I am a great fan of Herman Cain for his sincerity and genuine desire to restore constitutionally limited government. He is a man of principle that the media can smear but not destroy.
I am not so sure that Newt's principles are immutable, but his comprehensive knowledge of history and policy make him the indispensable man at this dangerous hour.
Any of you who watched Herman and Newt interact at that Tea party debate in Texas last week will likely agree with me that a Cain/Gingrich ticket either way up will combine conservative principles, essential political skills, and the mutual respect to work things through.

Nancy in NC| 11.15.11 @ 8:17AM
It's always a good idea to look at what people do versus what they say. Newt IS NOT a conservative, even though he plays one on TV.
Gingrich is the consummate politician that will do whatever it takes to advance himself, and has a nasty temper to go with it. (I've heard he makes John McCain look like a pussycat.)
One needs to look at Newt's part as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and his connections with the "one world, global" folks for starters. I would not be surprised to find Newt is a progressive in sheep's clothing.
His "dissing" comment about Paul Ryan, his support of Dede in New York, the ad with Pelosi, his messy personal life...the list goes on and on. Newt is no Churchhill.
ole meanie| 11.15.11 @ 10:08AM
Well, if one is a politician, is it not better to be a "consummate" one?
And if one is able to alter his views after further reflection, is that not better than being a rock-ribbed adherent to a bad view?
As to Newt's allegedly titanic temper, it is often forgotten that Eisenhower had a titanic temper, but Ike knew how to control it. McCain, maybe not. I have never seen Newt lose his temper publicly.
As to Newt's "moral failings", are we electing a President or a Pope? Is Newt less "moral" than FDR--who carried on an affair with his wife's pained knowledge? Is Newt less "moral" than JFK, who slept with a gangster's moll--in the White House?
Occam's Tool| 11.15.11 @ 11:43AM

John C.| 11.15.11 @ 8:20AM
Professor Newt is no Churchill for sure and he is no conservative. Newt’s answer for interior immigration enforcement is a guest worker program. Newt is an open-border, pro China globalist and an establishment Republican hack who pushed for ultra-liberal Scuzzy in NY23 and, like Flip Romney, has a number of past liberal positions.
Looks like RINO-Lovers Hannity and El-Rushbo are convincing the naïve Republican base that Newt is a conservative.
And if Newt wins the nomination we will not only lose the presidency but also fail to recapture the Senate and possibly lose the House too. The Dems will run against Newt as a reincarnation of George W. Bush. Also the GOP will lose the women vote with Newt.
Mike Rogers | 11.15.11 @ 8:31AM

CrackerHound| 11.15.11 @ 2:58PM
Ok John, which Republican is conservative enough and can beat Obama in the general election?
I believe Romney can beat Obama but I also believe if that happens it really doesn't matter in the fate of the country. Newt is the only person outside of Romney whom the American public will choose over Obama in my opinion.
Just try to picture in your head any other candidate facing Obama in the debates, talked about in the media, and answering 'gotcha' questions weeks from the debates.
Logos| 11.20.11 @ 1:09PM
and, why will "the GOP lose the women vote with Newt"? Are you saying, GOP women are stupid mind bots?
John C.| 11.15.11 @ 9:10AM
Yes Mike -- my choice is none of the above; there is no American-First conservative in the bunch. I am hoping pro-American Trump runs even though I am suspect about some of his positions.
Putting America and Americans first is our highest priority now – urgent in fact, otherwise we are doomed. Trump is also for rebuilding our shrunken Clinton/Bush/Obama military -- another very high priority.
If given no other choice I would vote for any GOP frontrunner except Ron Paul but if any of those won America would just die a slower death.
LMajito| 11.15.11 @ 9:13AM
hmmm...one has to refocus and think...what's the most important issue facing the country today? divorces, marital affairs, benches?
you have in the white house today a fellow that has not divorced, is not conducting marital affairs, is not sitting in benches with princess pelosi and are we really well off?
no human is perfect and american society sold its moral compass way back in the 90's when bc was in the white house getting oral relief but all was ok 'coz the stock market was going straight up and everybody was making dough...
i heard newt's interview last night when he acknowledged his mistakes such as sitting with the princess and explaining why he did it...also he stated that now as a grandpa, his view of life has matured as he has and has found a new lifeline of spiritual meaning...
i have watched and hear newt over the past three decades and have come to admire him. we need a leader that will make america proud and respected again...a person who has a solid grasp of history and clear vision for the future and one who's not swayed by polls or political talking heads...
he is not perfect, but for me this election is either newt or hermann...too bad for michelle...rick should go back to the lonestar state and get some coaches and take with him ronnie, he's like the crazy old uncle that can't speak too clearly...the rest of the field should do the right thing and walk away...
btw, anybody took the time to watch the donald and his 'how much is america worth' show? for those that think the us is done, they should look at this...sobering...in short the us is worth around 260 trillion dollars (after subtraciting the 15 trillion debt)...so much for the gloom and doom talks

Anthony| 11.15.11 @ 9:21AM
The anology is a bit of a stretch, but he's more Churchillian than anybody else we have.
America is in dangerous territory, thanks to Obozo and the hard Left. The 2012 election is a watershed election that will determine the fate of our Constitutional republic. Obozo care is in the hands of a Supreme Court that can't police itself in terms of judicial restraint, both in the law and in personal conflicts i.e Ms. Kagan.
Conservatives are sick of the leftist whores in the MSM and their selective and biased reporting, hence, the MSM's inability to take our Mr. Cain.
However, we crave a leader who is articulate and smart, someone that can't be easily dismissed by the elitist Left. Someone who can take on the likes of Scott Pelley, and send him to the woodshed in a debate because he/ she is quick on their feet and has the intellectual firepower to back it up.
All the Left would have over Newt is his past, which compared to the Ds, and their history, is quite tame.
I have many problems with Newt, and am not yet convinced that Newt has made a true turn to the right. As I have said in the past, his appetites and his ego need to be controlled.
Yet, I watch the media take down our candidates one at a time, and think, we truly need a leader who is capable of standing up to the onslaught and has a vision.
I for one am willing to give Newt a 2nd look, but he needs to make a pledge to us conservatives that he will indeed stay true to the cause and not stray back to Nancy Pelosi. If we had a strong, conservative RNC, it would be easier, but we don't, so it's up to us. WE MUST WIN IN 2012!!!
Besides, at least Newt will be far more Churchillian with a cigar, as opposed to the standard bearer of the D party, slick wee willie Clinton, or Barack (menthol) Obozo.

The need for a solid, knowledgeable, capable, non charismatic Conservative based, and able to lead, leader is so obvious.
We have been flimmed flammed, lied to, corrupted and denied basic liberties for some 10 or more years. It is far past the time for frivolous candidates of marginal abilities.
Newt, with all his warts and pimples, may well be that one.
IF we DONT SELECT a Conservative candidate that actually can beat Obama, then we will advance steadily into the Cloward Piven Mud Hut society, so ardently desired by the Left.

Newt Gingrich may be nominated because he is the most plausible current Republican candidate not named Mitt Romney. Yet he is a terrible choice for the nomination. America's problems are not just the fiscal abyss we have fallen into. America's collapse is also moral. We are the land of 40 % illegitimacy rates and 50 % divorce rates. In Gingrich we have a man whose vows mean little, who is a proven adulterer, and is narcissistic in the manner of Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Rather than nominate Gingrich shouldn't some party leaders give a call to Bobby Jindal or Bob McDonnell to step into what is rapidly becoming a political catastrophe.
MyGirlFriday| 11.15.11 @ 3:55PM
Derek Leaberry,
There is talk that Mitt Romney will pick Bob McDonnell for his V.P. in order to capture the conservative and Tea Party vote. I am sure his staff is waiting to make this announcement and will be predicated on how far his popularity falls and with Newt passing him in the polls.

For the record, let's not go too far here. Newt's good, there's no denying it. And I think he'd be a good candidate. But I still haven't picked a horse to back. And to start comparing him to one of the world's greatest leaders is a little pre-mature. To me, anyways, that'd be like comparing Marco Rubio to Cicero or Demothenes. Not quite yet, is what I say to this.
Bill| 11.15.11 @ 9:54AM
Newt Gingrich is no Churchill. However, he is much better that Bill Clinton or Barack Obama. I'm little skeptical about his stands on global warming (the Ad with Nancy Pelosi) and his pledge to the bipartisanship (?). He may embrace more liberal positions on issues in order to reach an agreement; that's unacceptable. He is good when he says English will be the official language and attacks Obama on issues and unite the GOP base to defeat Obama. Overall, I give Newt a "B" minus.

DTOM| 11.15.11 @ 10:57AM
Bill has shown some serious animosity towards Herman Cain. I keep asking him why - and get no reply.
But he did claim a lack of fiscal understanding, which would be surprising to those who know Mr. Cain was appointed to the KC Fed and then promoted to Chair it. Bill, maybe you have some other issue with Mr. Cain?
And there's the 'he doesn't know the Libyan government org chart' question. You know the one they bitch slapped Sarah Palin with...
I'm just saying, Bill might have issues...
Howard| 11.15.11 @ 10:09AM
I myself am much more likely to consider Newt. I especially enjoy where he challenges the moderators in the debates. Those liberals get flummoxed when Newt doesn't play by their rules and precepts. While I don't think Romney is a liberal; I think he is too prone to compromise with Democrats.
Simon Templar| 11.15.11 @ 10:09AM
Forever in chase for the perfect candidate and as they step up to the plate of candidacy, it is hand me a bat so we can beat them to death with "she's dumb," "he's an adulterer," " she has geography problems," "he is guilty of sexual harassment, I don't care if there is no evidence," and "he has bad debating skills."
Then they wonder why no one wants to run even when the incumbent has a 53 percent disapproval rating. Scratching their heads while they are stumped as to why this guy or that guy is not coming out of the wings to save them riding on his perfect 'conservative record' lily white stallion to save the day only to find that when he arrives..it is batter up..
You might be feeling a little pressure, Mr. Candidate, in a few seconds from now.
And if one does survive by chance to crawl out and get back on the road, he will surely be broken, bruised, cut, and bleeding.
Republican presidential elections are a lot like the
new testament story of the Carpenter from Nazareth who travels to the great capital to lead them to salvation. He is welcomed on Palm sunday with great anticipation, fanfare, hopes, and wishes and by Friday, he is scourged and hanging from a tree as the mob tears him apart and spits on him screaming for a replacement. They usually end up with a criminal. Ye have blasphemed against thy number rule of conservativism and have been tarnished by the latest liberal smear and accusation.
Then the rest of us hope he is resurrected, while the liberals mock him and pin a lablel of mockery on him, "This, the President of the Republicans." Next.

After watching these debates I am so much more convinced that Newt is the man among men in the room. Paul is crazy and Huntsman is a fake. The rest I could tolerate. But Newt on the stage with O-Teleprompter would be worth every second. That being said the writer doesnt bring up enough what I always fear with Newt (he mentions the Ryan episode) and that is Newts tendency at times to just become sort of out there- sort of self defeating and standing for things and people that dont make sense (out of what? A need to be liked or loved). I think of the Pelosi commercial and global warming. Sometimes Newt seems hell bent on doing some weird pretzel stretch to appeal to people who hate everything he stands for. --Yet as I watch these debates he is heads and shoulders above the rest- on substance as good as, on presence better than, on toughness better than, on ability to counter the media totally off the charts better, on ideas off the chart. He is a man with so much to offer.---I also question "Does he really want it?" Why? Sometimes he seems to want his ideas out there for digestion, but does he want it bad enough to get the ground game Romney and Perry have going? All questions that havent been fully answered. But right now he's in the cat birds seat with me. We shall see.
ole meanie| 11.15.11 @ 10:34AM
I don't see how anyone can dispute that Gingrich is the most experienced in national-level politics, or that he has the most formidable mind, among all the candidates. Is he likeable, warm, caring, "compassionate"? Maybe not, or on the other hand maybe he just can't or won't try to fake it.
What some of the conservative True Believers ought to bear in mind is that statistically they are in a very small minority in this country. Any candidate who can satisfy their test of ideological purity is going to turn off the majority of the voting public, and hand Obama another four years.
A candidate like Ron Paul isn't going to be nominated, and if he were, the general election will be a replay of Goldwater vs. LBJ in 1964. Perry is too much of a cowboy for general taste. Bachmann is a lightweight, and couldn't oppose Obama successfully. Romney--who utterly lacks conservative principles and is anathema to the Tea Party types-- is slippery and unattractive.
Cain's weaknesses are too apparent, and his strengths are conjectural. It is argued, in essence, that despite his obvious lack of knowlege, he did run a pizza chain, his heart is in the right place, and that he is a nice fellow.
If being able to run a corporation successfully, and being rich and African American are qualifications enough, and if likeabilty and "compassion" are the key elements of what we want in a leader, let's nominate Oprah Winfrey by acclamation and be done with it.
MarkR| 11.15.11 @ 11:01AM
Couldnt disagree more with the idea true believers arent capable-however I get your point if its a purity test.Romney fails on many levels though as not only not pure (who is) but also as a flip flopper of massive proportions who is NOT really a conservative in the Reagan mold. The old canard about being too conservative is a liberal-RINO invention. An example (I lived through em all) 1964-Goldwater -great ideas, awesome candidate- why the blow out? Answer -CONTEXT- 1964-one year after the assasination of Kennedy- new left is only beginning their assault on American society- the handsome young idealistic president is a martyr as we have never seen since Lincoln. The anti communism of the conservative left is beginning to coalese with the social liberalism of the burgeoning Great Society and will soon enough separate into the McGovernites of far left foreign policy views- Johnson could have not campaigned and won in a landslide.---Fast forward 16 years-- the American electorate is in misery- Carter and his congressional accomplices have torn down any sense of national honor and made America the laughing stock of the world- weak- ineffective and with an economy torn assunder by the famed "misery-index" and an enemy arising en mass on every continent (the USSR). Into the fray comes Reagan (the Hollywood actor/ the nut job whos gonna blow up the world/ the meany whos gonna destroy entitlements/ the dummy who is stupid/ old (Newt 1 year younger today) and the RINOS-Will/a young Krauthammer/ others on the Rockefeller and more liberal right- say Reagan would be a disaster and they write that stuff daily.)--Then the election: landslide as Reagan makes Carter look like the weakling he was.---Fast forward 30+ years- a much more dangerous time- the rise of the tea party- the 2010- blow out historic and we hear the same claptrap- elect a moderate- dont inflame the masses with an ideologue. History tends to counter that critique as Americans as a whole dont buy every facet of conservatism- but are NOT socialists and surely feel the ravages of a huge mistake in 2008. I say throw the best we got at em. This is no ordinary election or time. Not saying has to be pure- but certainly must be conservative and we gotta know that we are getting a reliable conservative who is gonna follow through. Romeny- I dont think so and at least I am not sure.

PhilTheCapitalistPig| 11.15.11 @ 12:30PM
Secondly, I'm sure the assasination of JFK had nothing to do with the election in 1964, not to mention the democrats introduction of the first smear campaign. Remember? the commercial where the democrats told america that Goldwater wanted their children to die?
MarkR| 11.15.11 @ 1:15PM
You think the assasination had nothing to do with it? Well you could be right but remember Johnson was there to bring in the age of Camelot and to end poverty and all discrimination- (he was going to fulfill JFK'S legacy)at least in theory and yes I remember the daisy commercial which aired exactly ONCE and was pulled. Democrats were so in the ascendency and JFK was an icon. No litany of great society failures yet in the books. A totally different time.

I guess if it could be summed up in one phrase about Newt Gingrich as a candidate for President of the United States.
"I am voting for Newt Gingrich as a candidate for President of the United States, not because I want to have him as a husband. I am voting for Newt Gingrich as a candidate for President of the United States because he has the articulate vision, and capabilities to lead this Country in a very troubled and dangerous world right now."
RJ| 11.15.11 @ 12:29PM
Good summary.
Interested Conservative| 11.15.11 @ 11:31AM
Interesting to see the comments here. Newt realizes he needs both the Paul wing (smaller) and the Tea Party wing (much bigger) to coalesce behind the non-Mitt candidate. The comments indicate the depth of the Paul support, and also how it could turn rapidly in his favor - hence, he'll need Mitt to alienate them before he does.
As for the Tea party wing, that is what the Veep is for. He has long, very long, recognized Gov. Palin as de facto leader there, and it will be a challenge to keep them aboard and avoid odder 3rd party runs (Trump, and possibly Bloomberg - though they may not affect states which matter).
I don't see how Mitt sways as many of these voters as the non-Mitt will, but he may squeak in electorally as the non-Obama.
Tough calls either way, but with Rep. Paul already nixing a 3rd party run, and with Sen. Paul rightfully maximizing his influence within the party, I don't see them going anywhere, even with Mitt.
Newt's long since owned the personal "baggage", and explained the "couch" mistake. As for the NY race, that was his last deference to local party control as opposed to Tea Party influence. Anyone think he cannot swing that as well?
Simon Templar| 11.15.11 @ 11:36AM
The Tea party is the majority, not the minority of the republican electorate and does not have to settle for VP. Ron Paul is trailing way behind by any and most polls.
Interested Conservative| 11.15.11 @ 12:16PM
1) Agreed about TP as a majority. I said "very big", but could have been clearer. It probably is a clear plurality, if not a 50% +1 majority. Still, it is somewhat indistinct.
2) My point about the VP is not that it "settles" for it, so much as it as to choose the nominee, who then has to lean toward the TP rather than mollify some other GOP faction. Namely, who is the TP choice as nominee? I suspect at this point Cain, perhaps Perry, with the others trying to sway them, perhaps Mitt the least, clearly less so than Newt.
Of the non-TP candidates, it seems Newt is closest to them, though perhaps Sen. Santorum would make that argument as well, but if you limit the discussion to the top four poll leaders, Cain, Perry, Newt and Mitt, I think that's the order of TP preference - have I misordered them?

Actually, as I recall, Newt resigned during the Clinton impeachment scandal when his own adultery scandal arose, making him less effective (I see to recall Larry Flynt paying 6 figure bounties for stories of republican infidelity). He was briefly replaced by Bob Livingston, whose own adultery scandal surfaced, causing him to resign. He was eventually replaced by Denny Hastert. I seem to recall that both Newt and Livingston were trying to set an example whereby if your personal dishonorable scandal was going to make you an ineffective as a leader, one way to begin to restore honor was to resign, making room for one who would not be so ineffective. Since Clinton failed to follow that example (and thanks to a 500 Florida voters who didn't hang their chads), we as a nation were spared the spectacle of President Gore (which might have turned out to be Clinton's most significant accomplishment of his second term).

Does this 'ease with which China can build factories' as Jobs said mean we'd welcome a high employee suicide rate as at Foxconn? How about suicide nets in American factories?
As for the comparison with Churchill, Gingrich certainly has his warmonger tendencies (but most American presidents have had) and an instinct to drop bombs on innocent people (ditto). Churchill was a dreadful domestic top politician – Gingrich would be the same (but not as bad as GW Bush).
MarkR| 11.15.11 @ 1:26PM
Yea they all want to drop bombs on innocents-thanks for the deep insight. I imagine they all just sit around and think what innocent group of dummies can I slaughter today. The old USA -if it would just stay home and get together and cumbaya all would be well- hell 9/11 wouldnt a happened or Pearl Harbor! Oh I know Iraq was a choice war and we just wanted their oil right? Its all for Haliburton and geo political interests be dam-ed- and of course Saddam never posed a threat to anyone right? Yea I know the talking points. Paulista maybe?

No, what Jobs was alluding to is that when the US imposes regulatory obstacles to new industries, those industries will first go to the places where those regulations do not exist if they intend to stay in business.
Jack London| 11.15.11 @ 3:07PM
Huh? That's what I said George. We have regulations that stop plants like Foxconn's operating here. It's just a shame that Jobs wasn't more like Bill Gates, who has used his vast wealth for much good. Jobs sent his manufacturing to the most deregulated, cheapest exploitative places he could find.
Simon Templar| 11.15.11 @ 6:25PM
Apparently, not by choice but necessity..you seem to have missed that part.
What is it exactly that you do not understand about running a business, remaining competitive, and making the best profit you can for your stockholders and investors? Oh, none of it.
Yeah, that would explain a lot.
BTW, you are such a stupid useful idiot, you missed the biggest one of all here, we are not advocating overseas manufacturing or exploitation of anyone.
We are advocating that these jobs and companies come back here. The only way to do this is stop what is driving them out. An insane corporate tax system and an insane industrial regulation system. Does that mean no regulation at all, of course not, just a review and withdrawal of that which is too burdensome, stupid, and unproductive.
Jack London| 11.16.11 @ 2:42AM
So you think we can compete with the sweatshops of Indonesia, India, China etc? How would we do that? Where would the workers come from to work for a few dollars a day for backbreaking work?

THIS, fellow conservatives, is why libertarians get the bum rap they do. Douchecanones like Jack & Clit are the Stormfront/Alex Jones/9-11 "Troofer" types. There are few, a couple on Townhall.com, where I'm also a regular, who're good people. And they've been regulars there for a while as well. also am a Newt supporter and believe he has as good a chance as anyone to beat Obama. But my concern is this, and I noticed it last night on Hannity (I think).
It is that he can come across as very smug, almost cocky, and now that he is a force to be reckoned with in the Republican primary, this trait is becoming more evident. And this is EXACTLY what led to his downfall in 1998, a mere four years after his great triumph of 1994. His advisors need to tell him to cool it a little bit, to show a little more humility.
If he gets the nomination, then comes across as arrogant and condescending during the general election, he may turn off too many moderates.

Newt is a great debater, but being the President, is not just nice talk, he needs to clarify his position on global warming and be prepared to defend his martial life. He needs to forget the clumsy idea of bipartisan, there is no such thing as bipartisan, conservatives never negotiate, only the liberals do. That's why those liberals are disposable.
PhilTheCapitalistPig| 11.15.11 @ 1:50PM
His Martial Life? What exactly is that. I believe he addressed the myth in his marital life, but still nothing on his martial life. You may be on to something.
His position on global warming has been clear. He's for market based innovation in the technologies that can lead us away from petroleum.

That's why I'm a big fan of Gov. rick Perry, who vows to crack down on bureaucracy, and has a solid plan to reduce the size of the government and balance the budget. Similar to Dr. Ron Paul, Rick Perry will eliminate three Dept. (education, energy, and commerce). His flat tax plan will reduce the burden of the American taxpayers, who have been abused by the IRS for decades. He will cut spending and get us out of debt. He will defund the planned parenthood and reinstate the DADT policy in the military. He will help states crack down on the gay marriage and the illegal immigration. He will strengthens our military and restore our pride in the world. He will unite America on the motto: "In God, we trust." As a Christan, I love Gov. rick Perry for his courage, honest, and hard work he put in to save America. I'll wash his feet.
PhilTheCapitalistPig| 11.15.11 @ 1:51PM
Problem with Perry is that he can't put together words to form a complete sentence. That's a major disability against a guy like Obama.
Bill| 11.15.11 @ 3:20PM
The liberal media waged a war against Rick perry because they are afraid of Perry, having a solid conservative record on fiscal and social issues, Perry will defeat Obama in a landslide. Perry is from the great South, the land of conservatism, that's a major setback for the liberals.

Rick Perry is the real deal, nobody else. Rick Perry=Ronald Reagan.

Perry is my first choice. I'd rather have someone with the experience and proven track record - which Perry has in spades! - than some one who is a great debater.
Actions speak louder than words.......
Unfortunately, American has become so celebrity-ized that they don't know a hard working, truely experienced, wholey competent candidate when the see one.
I go for substance...not for show. And Perry has plenty of substance!

"On 11 April 1972, Saratoga sailed from Mayport en route to Subic Bay, and her first deployment to the western Pacific. She arrived in Subic Bay on 8 May and departed for Vietnam the following week, arriving at "Yankee Station" on 18 May for her first period on the line. Before year's end, she was on station in the Tonkin Gulf a total of seven times: 18 May to 21 June; 1 July to 16 July; 28 July to 22 August; 2 September to 19 September, 29 September to 21 October; 5 November to 8 December; and 18 December to 31 December. She had been reclassified as a "Multi-purpose Aircraft Carrier" (CV-60) on 30 June 1972.
During the first period, Saratoga lost four aircraft and three pilots. On the plus side, on 21 June, two of her F-4 Phantoms attacked three MiG 21s over North Vietnam. Dodging four surface-to-air missiles, they managed to down one of the MiG aircraft. Saratoga's planes attacked targets ranging from enemy troop concentrations in the lower panhandle to petroleum storage areas northeast of Hanoi. On her second line period, she lost an F-4 to enemy fire northeast of Hanoi with the pilot and radar intercept officer missing in action. During this period, her aircraft flew 708 missions against the enemy.
On 6 August, Lieutenant Jim Lloyd of VA-105, flying an A-7 Corsair on a bombing mission near Vinh, had his plane shot out from under him by a SAM. He ejected into enemy territory at night. In a daring rescue by helicopters supported by CVW-3 aircraft, he was lifted from the midst of enemy soldiers and returned to the Saratoga. On 10 August, one of the ship's CAP jet fighters splashed a MiG at night using AIM-7 Sparrow missiles.
During the period 2 September to 19 September, Saratoga's aircraft flew over 800 combat strike missions against targets in North Vietnam. On 20 October, her aircraft flew 83 close air support sorties in six hours in support of a force of 250 Territorials beleaguered by the North Vietnamese 48th Regiment. Air support saved the small force, enabled ARVN troops to advance, and killed 102 North Vietnamese soldiers. During her last period on station, Saratoga's aircraft battered targets in the heart of North Vietnam for over a week.
Saratoga departed "Yankee Station" for Subic Bay on 7 January 1973."

I said early on that Nute would do some damage, but is unelectable. Obama wouldn't even have to mention Nute, he would just let Clinton go after him. What better person to do it? Clinton would have no need for restraint, and Nute deserves a serious smash mouth for his hypocritical attacks against Clinton for sexual behavior while in office. Nute wouldn't stand a chance.
Time for a candidates review:
Romney: will be too damaged by Repub infighting to beat Obama. He is style likely to get the nomination however, despite the attacks against him regarding flip-flopping, which are just cloaks for the evangelicals distaste for Mormonism.
Cain: the only explanation for Cains surge is the evangelicals distaste for Mormonism (see Romney, above); otherwise I would have to include his supporters are completely insane, instead of only partially so. (Note how the fervency of his support has declined in TAS forums.)
Hunstman: who?
Bachman: didn't have the wit to run on her main issue (anti-gay marriage) and waded in over her head where she can only tread water, not truly swim.
Gingrich: Foolishly imagines that we will forget his hypocrisy and $500,000 line of credit at a jewelry store (but hey, maybe that's what his intern/wife needs to wear to turn him on when she is naked). This is a particularly bad time with the lectorate to have large lines of credit at Tiffany's.
Santorum: why is he even running? Maybe a Huntsman/Santorum debate is in order?
Ron Paul: consistently himself, which is what worries everybody.
Perry: as I said before, open mouth and stick in foot, leg soon to follow, but I didn't think he could manage the whole leg. Surprise, he's now up to his chest! Perry is challenging Paul for the Aluminum Hat position. He is so unbelievably ridiculous that he probably embarrassing even Texans, and could lose the governorship there next time around (of course, Dems there would have to run someone who wasn't a spineless anti-gun type -- how likely is that?

"August 25, 1944: Paris, France — "Dammit colonel, I'm looking up at Notre Dame!" became the battle cry of an on-going feud between two former Guard units as each claim the bragging rights as to which American unit was the first to actually enter the city of Paris just as the Germans abandoned it. The statement was made by Captain William B....le, a New Jersey Guardsman, commanding Troop A, 38th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron to his commander, Colonel Cyrus Dolph III, commander of New Jersey's 102nd Cavalry Group, the famous "Essex Troop" to which the 38th was assigned. The 38th was organized in 1942 from former Guardsmen of Iowa's 113th Cavalry Regiment. After the 38th was assigned to the 102nd in England it gained some New Jersey Guardsmen (including B.....le) too. The other half of the 102nd Groups' compliment was it's own 102nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, also from New Jersey. Ever since landing on Omaha Beach on June 8th (D+2 after "D-Day") the Group had been an important part of the scouting 'eyes' of the Allied advance through Normandy. On this date each squadron was scouting ahead for major components of the Allied armies. The 38th was patrolling for the 4th U.S. Infantry Division and the 102nd scouting for the French 2nd Armored Division. Both entered Paris at about the same time by two different routes. While Buenzle's statement gives strength to the 38th's claim, and the veterans of each claim to this day that their squadron was the "first," its safe to say that Guardsmen were indeed the "first in Paris."

"To make no mistake, no one is making some dopey comparison of Obama to Hitler. Please."
Mr. Lord, you will not make a comparison of Obama with Hitler, but I will. Obama is represents the greatest threat this nation has ever seen. Not in the military sense, of course, but as the mother of all Pied Pipers. He promises the one thing most humans long for: something for nothing. Given another term, he will lure the citizens of this country right down a communist/facist rat hole. And that's exactly how Hitler did it.

It's not what price Gingrich, it's what price is Gingrich willing to pay to win.
Because he is going to be Borked like there has never been a Borking before. The Cain takedown was a finger flick. The only thing comparable to what Newt is about to go through is what Palin went through in 2008.
Whether Newt is the next president depends on whether he can keep his cool as the historically unprecedented lies shower down on him like a Cat 5 hurricane.

As to the headline, Jeffrey can only plausibly be referring to Randolph or the eponymous bad Edwardian novelist.
Newt has clung to his principles with no more tenacity than his mistresses , and only low Whigs should consider embracing either.

Attention Newt Gingrich haters: if you don't have anything useful to say, then stay off of the posts on this site. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. I for one, admired Newt during the 1994 "Contract With America". For those of you who don't remember that, he delivered the vote on every single point he and his fellow House Republicans ran on. I remember being fascinated with the entire process and couldn't stop watching House of Representative votes on C-span. That being said, is he perfect? No. Does he have faults? Certainly. No candidate is perfect. However, (and I address this at the haters as well as the ignorant liberal Obama stooges) wouldn't you love to see this man debate Obama one on one? He would run circles around him. With all of his faults (and Newt has acknowledged and apologized for the most telling ones) he is brilliant and would lead this country out of the dependency, decline, and pessimism that has been present ever since the voters were fooled into voting for a fraudulent community organizer because he was deemed "smart". Really? By whose standards is the current POTUS smart? Let's see him take on someone who REALLY IS smart and then sit back and enjoy. There is no comparison to McCain either for the haters. McLame was simply that during the campaign and he used his best asset, Sarah Palin, in the worst way possible. I KNEW McCain would lose as soon as he wrapped up the primaries. I KNOW that Newt would win if he were able to win the Republican nomination. Okay libs and haters. Let's here it!

Gingrich is to Churchill as a lightning bug is to lightning. Nevertheless, he may be the closest thing we've got. He's not THAT close to being Churchill, though.

I suspect that the crisis Americans want rescuing from is the "Great Stagnation."
I was thinking of someone else - not Churchill, not Reagan or Thatcher. Someone who made a comeback after being ousted. Someone whose intellect was always respected, but his temperament was not. Someone whose self-discipline was questioned. This person returned after more than a decade in the wilderness, too, and eventually built the most valuable company in the world. http://bit.ly/rwQuhA

Good piece as always. The Newt strikes me as a "big idea guy." They are magnificent when coming up with the vision and the overall direction, but absolutely terrible when it comes to leading and managing.
After leading the 1994 revolution, Gingrich seems to have gotten bored with the whole thing. By 1998, his tenure, but not the conservative mission, was over.
I'll stick with the inarticulate, unprofessorial Perry.

This article hits the nail on the head. Churchill was a man of controversy throughout his political career: Gallipoli, his switching parties, his stance towards the Nazis, when he was a lone voice in the wilderness. The political classes in Britain trembled when he became Prime Minister. And Churchill proceeded to respond to Britain's crisis in WW II with sterling rhetoric and leadership. Gingrich is, in my humble opinion, the only man who has the historical and working knowledge and experience to be a statesman and rescue this country from its existential crisis.

Gingrich is a multiple adulator, trice married, resigned from congress and paid a $300,000 fine for ethics violations, received tens of millions for lobbying and influence peddling, and had a $500,000 credit line from Tiffany's. He is fat, old and totally inconsistent on his positions. And he proposed last week that we use 9 and 10 year old kids as janitors in our schools. The Obama crowd is
gleeful at the thought of running against this old has been. It is impossible that he is actually leading in the polls for the Republican nomination?
