Devil’s Dictionary, Obama Edition

Abraham Lincoln: Not the founder of the Republican Party.

Why, you may ask, are you publishing a dictionary to help decode President Obama’s latest “jobs speech” the night after he gave it? The answer is based on the results of a poll by Kaminsky & Associates (polling methodology not disclosed) which asked, “When will you watch Barack Obama’s latest ‘jobs speech’?” The results were as follows:

While he is giving it: 4%
Recording it to watch later: 19%
Never: 59%
Speech? What speech?: 18%

In other words, while more than three quarters of the population has either no interest in or knowledge of the speech, nearly five times as many people will watch/listen to the speech after having an opportunity to access this reference material as will watch it live. It is worth noting, as one digs into the details of the poll results (details not available to the public, of course) that of those who said they will be watching Obama’s speech while he is giving it, 61% were members of Congress, 13% were columnists and television pundits, 9% were labor union leaders, and 15% changed their answers after learning that the first game of the NFL season began later the same evening.

The Devil’s Dictionary, Obama Speech Edition

Abraham Lincoln: Not the founder of the Republican Party.

Basic protection(s): Any regulation(s) that Barack Obama believes will reduce the ability of financial, medical, or fossil fuel companies to earn a profit, especially any regulation based on the Progressive view that individual Americans are too stupid to be allowed to make our own decisions in the most important areas of our daily lives. Also, any regulation that strengthens the power of unions.

Different theory: Economic policy views supported by history, evidence, and research by Barack Obama’s own (former) top economic advisor, but not supported by Barack Obama.

Doing nothing: If referencing a Republican-controlled chamber of Congress, not giving the president at least 90% of what he wants even while passing legislation. Not applicable to a Democrat-controlled chamber of Congress, even if not passing any legislation.

Fair shake: The additional amount of money the government can extract from society’s most successful by turning success into a vice and lack of success into a virtue; similar to shakedown.

Fair share: More than you pay in taxes now, especially if you are in the top 1% of earners who already pay more in income taxes than the bottom 95% of taxpayers and who pay nearly twice as much as a share of taxes than they earn as a share of national income.

Fairness: A never-reached situation in which the “rich” are paying their Fair share and Warren Buffett is happy.

Help: Buy one group of Americans’ votes with money earned by those who pay most federal income taxes by giving the latter group a Fair shake.

Jolt: A policy dramatic enough to increase Barack Obama’s poll numbers. A cola I drank in college.

Listen to every new proposal: Tailor a bill based on “suggestions” from the head of the AFL-CIO, SEIU, or AFSCME; Suggestions from Republicans responded to with “I won.”

Most fortunate: Hardest working, smartest, most entrepreneurial, most responsible for job creation, paying more than others in taxes, or being part of any other such category so deserving of income confiscation, over-regulation, union domination, or any other punishment the Obama Administration can implement over Republican opposition which is based on Rigid ideas.

500 regulations to be eliminated: Smoke and mirrors and an attention grabber used to stuff worthless speeches by worthless politicians who have nothing of worth to offer except unworthiness.

What is 500 regulations? That is one days supply of the stuff coming out of Washington.

But you are forgetting how McCain, had he been elected in '08, would have been the weakest, dullest, most spineless toady of a president since Buchanan.

Katherine| 9.10.11 @ 8:26PM

Better dull than destructive! Or would you prefer Jack the Ripper to Mr. Rogers?

And there is nothing brave or decisive about Obama. He's been given a free ride the majority of his life. And he has the attention span of a gnat, so lacking that he needs a teleprompter to give a three minute speech to school children.

At least McCain paid his dues, both in terms of surviving a Vietnamese POW camp (proving that he is not spineless) and the decades he's spent in the Senate.

Alan Brooks| 9.11.11 @ 2:45PM

"proving that he is not spineless"

You are correct, McCain was not spineless in Nam; yet neither was Carter when he was in the Navy; it wasn't until he became prez that Carter became spineless.

Alan Brooks| 9.11.11 @ 2:51PM

btw, did you ever consider if Carter hadn't been prez, the Red Army might not have invaded Afghanistan; the Taliban might not have taken over there, and 9-11 might not have ever occurred.

Oh what a tangled web he did weave,
when Carter first rolled up his presidential sleeve

Rick the original Devils Dictionary was by Ambrose Bierce, a crusty SOB if ever there was one. Did you ever have to read "An occurrence at Owl Creek bridge" during your school days?

Brian Mc| 9.9.11 @ 8:56AM

Gutenburg Press Online has his complete works. I personally love his "What I Saw of Shiloh". His description of the flag dancing to the sound of distant battle is some of the best prose I've ever read. Why this story never made it to the theatre near you is beyond me...
"Owl Creek" did, albeit, not in full length movie form but short and bitter-sweet just like the story.

Ross Kaminsky | 9.9.11 @ 7:59AM

Dan, the only use of the word "outdated" that I recall (or can find in the printed transcript) was when he was discussing the patent process. But I could be wrong...if you can find a credible transcript that shows Obama using "outdated" the way you describe, please let me know the link. Of course he does believe just what you suggest.

Dan Hirsch| 9.9.11 @ 11:19AM

Ross;

I appreciate your question.

This is from last night's speech as released by the White House and this is what I heard him say:

"What kind of country would this be if this Chamber had voted down Social Security or Medicare just because it violated some rigid idea about what government could or could not do?"

Looking at the man's past speeches, you would realize that he is clearly referring to the Constitution.

Read this from World Net Daily in 2008:

"Seven years before Barack Obama's "spread the wealth" comment to Joe the Plumber became a GOP campaign theme, the Democratic presidential candidate said in a radio interview the U.S. has suffered from a fundamentally flawed Constitution that does not mandate or allow for redistribution of wealth.

In a newly unearthed tape, Obama is heard telling Chicago's public station WBEZ-FM in 2001 that "redistributive change" is needed, pointing to what he regarded as a failure of the U.S. Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren in its rulings on civil rights issues in the 1960s.

The Warren court, he said, failed to "break free from the essential constraints" in the U.S. Constitution and launch a major redistribution of wealth. But Obama, then an Illinois state lawmaker, said the legislative branch of government, rather than the courts, probably was the ideal avenue for accomplishing that goal."

Read more: Obama rips U.S. Constitution http://www.wnd.com/?pageId=79225#ixzz1XT0ANWHq

He dared not say it simply, but that is his meaning. Don't doubt me.

In 2007 I read the scans of fliers circulated by the New Democrat Party in Chicago endorsing him for the Illinois legislature. The New Democrats were open and avowed socialists. They endorsed him; and they certainly cannot endorse the Constitution's protections of personal freedoms and property rights.

You might think this seems thin, but ask yourself 'why did they put it in?' Why? Who is he talking to? What is he telling them to do?

Look out! Your freedom is being taken...don't let them!

Don't tread on me!

PS

Notice, no "Cap Lock." this time.

Ross Kaminsky | 9.9.11 @ 12:48PM

Dan,

I'm with you. I was just saying that I only heard "rigid idea" rather than "outdated" in reference to the constitution (even though he didn't say the word constitution.)

The WBEZ radio thing is true. I have listened to it.

Dan Hirsch| 9.9.11 @ 3:13PM

You must.

DTOM

Dan Hirsch| 9.9.11 @ 3:31PM

We try to practice conservative civility, not Democrat civility around here...

DTOM

Boar Hunter| 9.9.11 @ 4:13PM

Dan, I'm certain you accurately identified the meaning of Timothy's statement. Your clarification made me giggle. After all, we all know the only ones allowed to threaten and encourage violence by taking the "Son's on Bitches out" are Obama's union thugs.

Is liberal hypocrisy not truly amazing? They continually lie and resort to comedic claims of conservative conspiracies using "dog whistle" code words. They actually edit the statements of their "enemies" to support their own lies and falsely accuse conservatives of violent rhetoric when it is they who are responsible for the degradation of public discourse.

Liberals continue to openly called for the death of Bush and Palin. Who was it that recently said Kill Romney? Yet, heaven help any conservative who inferred Obama so much as twist an ankle during the 2012 political campaign. The resultant howl's of indignation would be heard for generations.

Lacking any defense of their destructive policies for the upcoming election, liberals created a violent, raciest, boogie man out of a non-partizan, grass-roots organization, whose only crime has been the creation of the motto "Taxed Enough Already." For that indefensible act, Tea Party members are disparaged as "racists, tea baggers, terrorists and told to go "straight to hell." And all the while these baseless, vapid accusations against the Tea Party are supported and cheered by the entire democrat leadership including that SCFOAMF Obama.

In contrast to the unfounded complaints against the Tea Party, remind me again what Maxine Waters involvement in providing money to bail out her husbands bank was? How much money did that cost us? Where did that investigation go? Maxine not only stated the Tea Party could go "straight to hell," she boasted of supplying her help. This brood of vipers has the audacity to call the Tea Party racists? As far as I'm concerned, that evil, corrupt whore and the real racists who support her based simply on the color of her skin do not need anyones help in reaching their final sulfurous destination.

Timothy L. Pennell| 9.9.11 @ 7:24PM

No, that's not what I mean, at all.

Ned Ferguson| 9.9.11 @ 8:29AM

Lincoln may carry the Republican label, but he was a mercantilist and hyper-statist even worse than Obama. They are, in fact, ideological twins. Lincoln also used high-minded rhetoric to mask his true intentions.

Ross Kaminsky | 9.9.11 @ 8:34AM

Ned, you're not gonna get too far bashing Lincoln. It's even harder to do than bashing FDR (who well deserves rhetorical bashing.) For someone who might disagree with you, look up Tom Krannawitter's book, Vindicating Lincoln.

Ned Ferguson| 9.9.11 @ 10:23AM

Ross, I don't see how it is possible to vindicate Lincoln inn light of all the facts, but I will read it. Thanks for the tip. For the record, I spent most of my life admiring Lincoln like a good little boy as I was taught in government school. It is only recently that I became suspicious that we should worship the man enshrined on a monolithic throne in kingly repose. No man on earth deserves the aura of holiness imputed to Lincoln.

Dan Hirsch| 9.9.11 @ 11:22AM

What in the world are you talking about?

Do only Ron Paul supporters believe in the afterlife?

Do only Ron Paul supporters believe that Lincoln's military response to the South's secession and unprovoked military attack launched to preserve the institution of human slavery was wrong?

What are you thinking?
Should we have surrendered? Were they right? Do you believe in slavery? Are you goofy?

Well, let's hear your "thinking."

DTOM

Todd S| 9.9.11 @ 9:30PM

I was clearly not talking to you Dan, you should know how this comment system works by now. My point is that the Ron Paul fanatics tend to have a real dislike for Lincoln for their myriad crazy reasons. This idiot Ned disparages the great man who saved our Republic and called him worst than Obama, I find that disgusting and repugnant. I have studied his life and he is one of the greatest men to have ever lived whatever a clown like Ned says.

Dan Hirsch| 9.9.11 @ 11:04PM

Todd;

Busted I am. Sorry, sir. I will keep better track of the indents so as not to swing at the wrong guys. I hate friendly fire damage, especially when I do it.

Anyway, thanks for the your conservative civility. Lucky for me, you didn't invoke the Democrat civility...

DTOM

Simon Templar| 9.9.11 @ 12:31PM

What I find amazing about these ridiculous claims and slams about Lincoln is the incredible willful ignorance about what was going on during his Presidency. A frigin CIVIL WAR. The United States ceased to exist. There was no constitution nor rules for engagement. Hyper statist?

The union was essentially fighting another nation of rebels that formed their own rule of law. Why should Lincoln have applied constitutional measures and approaches to confederates that refused to recognize this constitution and created their own? Lincoln needs no validation or vindication.

He did what was necessary to win and put down this rebellion and war against what was remaining of the United States. We could learn a lot from him.

Quartermaster| 9.9.11 @ 1:48PM

The south was within its rights to leave. Period. Lincoln had no "rebellion" on his hands. he did have a bunch of northeastern moneymen that were deathly afraid of a free trading south and who were the real power behind Lincoln and were willing to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of lives to pad their own bank accounts.

Additionally, the south had no interest in ruling the north, so teh idiocy of calling teh war a "civil war" holds no water. It was a war of northern aggression and was a war to support the same group of crony capitalists that have made a mess of the country. They are the Obummers spiritual fathers, and his supporters today.

Incidentally, Lincoln did not found teh Republican party. he was merely its first sucessful presidential candidate.

I fall into that 59% category for the simple reason that I know what will be said. I believe we should all be grateful for every speech President Obama gives between now and election day 2012. Unlike 2008, he will have a track record that cannot be ignored. I am finding more people who claim to be very sorry they ever voted for this president.
Excellent dictionary! It should help me to deal with my obvious confusion.

Ross Kaminsky | 9.9.11 @ 9:01AM

Thanks, Bill. Only one error in your comment. You are obviously NOT confused when it comes to Obama.

Bill A | 9.9.11 @ 6:33PM

Ross, thank you. Somehow, Ihad never come across Bierce. After reading a bunch of his stuff, I am guessing Mencken was a big fan of him.
I have sent the Dictionary on to several friends and they are all howling. You may just be responsible for an avalanche of thought.

Bill A | 9.9.11 @ 9:56AM

I grew up in Brooklyn, NY. My mother once had a small store in the neighborhood. One day a man walks in and tries to sell her "plate glass insurance", because you never know when some hoodlum might throw a rock through your window. Playing dumb, she called my father who listened to this creeps spiel. It was only then that my dad informed the man that dad was a policeman. Needless to say, we had no problems after that.
I have always failed to see the difference between that neighborhood thug and the politician who uses laws to extract "campaign contributions" from businesses.

JimH| 9.10.11 @ 8:38AM

Of course many there considered Gerri Ferraro's biggest accomplishment was getting us a Queens zip code. I think some people thought it would help with insurance rates.

Petronius| 9.9.11 @ 9:39AM

Good stuff. Now pick up Bierce's DD and look up jis definition of the word "idiot." 2 Add the word "liberal" to it.

George S| 9.9.11 @ 10:40AM

Slacker: A person who never runs out of excuses for not acting or getting things done. Interchangeable with 'Coward'.

I didn't watch the speech. Knowing the man is a slacker/coward, I knew that it would be a one big "Not My Fault" soliloquy. We all have seen his type where we work -- he's the guy who always has a good game as to why he's frequently late, why he has more sick days, why his sales are the lowest, why his projects are over budget, why his cold calls bat zero, or why there is a never ending backlog.

A President who gives speeches and goes on vacation instead of rolling up his sleeves and gettin'er done is looking to place the blame elsewhere. Come to think of it, that is also a primary trait of a narcissist. A lazy narcissist. Great. November 2012 is a long way. Hope the Republican Congress keeps it s@#t together till then.

Quartermaster| 9.9.11 @ 1:52PM

It had better get to work, then. It doesn't have it together now. And, is someone like Palin is nominated, you'll see the Rove types turn coat very quickly. They know who actually butters their bread, and it ain't the American people.

Given that 50% of the taxpayers of this country are paying something like 93% of the taxes, I'd venture to guess that the rich are already paying their fair share.

Maybe President Obama or Congress, or both, should be directing the IRS to take a look at the 50% of Americans who pay no income tax at all. Maybe they're the ones who aren't paying their fair share.

Although I'm all for as many people as possible paying no taxes. But if we're going to be fair, by golly let's be fair.

Simon Templar| 9.9.11 @ 2:29PM

Ross,

For the most part I enjoy your articles and find that you are spot on. As of yet, I do not have any beef with you.

At this point, with Cheney attacking Palin with liberal talking points, Boehner yucking it up with Biden, Coulter and Ingraham slamming the Tea Party and Palin, McCain calling me a Hobbit, Boehner snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, Rove attacking Palin, Perry, and any candidate strongly associated with the Tea Party, and everyone else including the Paulbots using the Tea party when convenient, why should anyone give a rats ass anymore. Anyone with a half an once of integrity and a half a brain can see that nothing is going to change.
Aside from a very few, this is just a game. Few can think out of the box of conventional thinking or are willing to face the truth.
You seem like a smart guy. How about some articles about what we are really dealing with here and why the Left has essentially won this war?
Happy snowboarding.

The real battle will be reversing the socialist policies after the election. The election is important in that the real battle can't be fought if the dithering idiot liar in chief of downgrade is reelected. Romney, of course, can defeat Obama. My stool can defeat him. It is critical the candidate who defeats him has the integrity, character, skill, and will to fight this seemingly overwhelming battle, and do so well enough not to hand the reigns back to the socialists two or four years later. I encourage you Ross to continue the fight with the weapons in your arsenal: words arranged intelligently and honestly. Good luck and best wishes. And, I'll say it, I know you won't take offense, God bless.

skip| 9.9.11 @ 9:04PM

Oops. Perry is that candidate, with the starch. The sniping being done is because, if the dithering idiot liar in chief of downgrade isn't defeated, it will be too late after four more years. Dan Hirsch| 9.9.11 @ 3:26PM

Has anyone fact checked BHO on Buffet and his secretary and their taxes? Or is this just "urban legend" as most everything else BHO says...

DTOM

Ross Kaminsky | 9.9.11 @ 3:34PM

Buffett has said repeatedly that he pays a lower tax RATE, not fewer total tax dollars, than his secretary does. That's because he pays capital gains tax and she pays ordinary income tax. But of course capital gains are profits from investments made (most of the time) with money on which ordinary income tax was already paid.

Did you read my article about Buffett recently on these pages?
http://spectator.org/archives/.....you-to-say

Dan Hirsch| 9.9.11 @ 4:13PM

Thought so. I do recall it.

My understanding of W. Buffett was that he did a lot acquisitions of firms forced to liquidate to meet estate tax liabilities...

I may be wrong on that. And if I am, my apologies to Mr. Buffett. Sorry, sir.

But, if I'm not, it would certainly explain his penchant for calling for increased taxes on higher income individuals, reducing their ability to save up for the tax liability caused by CEO Dad's demise.

That's your right Ross, of course. And of course, I have the right to my opinion, right?

Ross Kaminsky | 9.9.11 @ 9:17PM

Robert,
You won't find me standing up for big corporations just because they're big. When corporations use government to take taxpayer money or to deflect competition, that's too close to fascism for my taste.

That said, I would suggest that most of the corporate donors who gave to Obama are not feeling the love right now, and that Obama is in fact NOT thinking of them when he talks about help.

He used those gullible corporate types as pawns, but his real game is unions all the way. It's like Muslims being encouraged to lie to the non-believers.

Cuts Will Be Paid For

That Will’s an odd, uncertain cat;
He means then this, and means now that.
When Will is used, you might look at
The many ways he hangs his hat.

A fixed intent or certain plan
Is often well within his span.
But oftentimes, our leading man
Will cat about as Should or Can.

And Will likewise means legacy,
The hot bloodline, the family tree.
It may do well for you and me,
But future heirs may disagree.

A conscious choice our Will is too,
Depending on your point of view.
That choice can be, for me and you,
A cup of tea or bitter brew.

And Will can mean to be in mind,
To offer up, lead from behind.
Or even better: be assigned –
When Will himself is disinclined.

So when that Will is catting ’bout
Remember he’s a fickle lout,
Whose meaning may well be in doubt;
When Will is used, the wise opt out.

You forgot Millionaires and Billionaires: Anyone not financially dependent on the federal government.

Thanks, Ross, but I will quibble with one thing: "Abraham Lincoln: Not the founder of the Republican Party." Well, in fact he was not, he joined it after a long time as a Whig, the difference of which between the two is inconsequential. Lincoln was, however, the man who "legitimized" strong central national government by persecuting and destroying the south and its legitimate government, and he was responsible for killing more than 650,000 Americans in his war. Conservatives number among themselves very bright men today such as Mark Levin who argue that the war Lincoln engineered and prosecuted "settled" the issue whether or not states could secede, claiming that they cannot now do so.
And they are wrong.

I think Obama has a lot in common with Lincoln in that, given the opportunity, Obama would do the same thing Lincoln did and worse. I suspect.

Of course I fully understand that no really "good" conservative except many of us with southern heritages have troubled themselves to learn the real history of the War of Northern Aggression, and that my comments are not likely to be appreciated here. But facts are indisputable. They are only interpretable.

AGAIN, great piece.

NOW, back to REALITY, viz a viz the Globalist
world media Fukishima cover up:

"They (ie the Global ruling elite) are holding
out. They're waiting for us to be ALLLL cooked.
That's the ONLY reason I can give why the entire
planet isn't racing to help that poor country.
Why they're not even talking about it."

Ned, you're not gonna get too far bashing Lincoln. It's even harder to do than bashing FDR (who well deserves rhetorical bashing.) For someone who might disagree with you, look up Tom Krannawitter's book, Vindicating Lincoln.

I respect Lincoln for many things , but what I found from further reading, is that his cabinet was not picked from the Republicans, many were not Republicans, he picked them for what they could do for the country.
