Why Perry Can Beat Obama and Romney Can’t

The former has credibility on jobs and health care to which the latter can make no claim.

Most of the GOP establishment is uncomfortable with Rick Perry. Few have openly attacked the Texas governor, as Karl Rove did when Perry criticized Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. However, the grumblings of former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan, a number of former Bush aides, and sundry other Republican luminaries have made it clear that they would prefer to see Mitt Romney as the GOP standard-bearer in 2012. Even inveterate RINO-basher Ann Coulter has said “Romney could actually beat Obama” and that Perry “won’t live up to expectations.” Coulter and the GOP establishment are wrong. Not only is Perry the favorite of rank-and-file Republicans, he is far better positioned than Romney to debate the President on the two issues that will inevitably dominate next year’s campaign — jobs and health care.

On jobs, Perry has a story to tell that Romney can’t hope to match. As the Wall Street Journal recently reported, “Some 37% of all net new American jobs since the recovery began were created in Texas.” While most states have experienced anemic job growth since June of 2009, and eighteen governors have watched their states endure actual declines in growth, Governor Perry has presided over a state economy that has added 265,300 new jobs. That makes Texas the most prolific job generator in the nation. By contrast, Mitt Romney’s record on job creation is lackluster at best. Job growth during his single term as Governor of Massachusetts was less than one percent, which “badly lagged other high-skill, high-wage, knowledge economy states like New York (2.7%), California (4.7%) and North Carolina (7.6%).”

Consider this in the context of the upcoming presidential campaign: Rick Perry can contrast Obama’s truly pathetic record on jobs with his own remarkable success. He can stand before the country in a debate and call out the President on his failed big-government agenda and say, as Charles Krauthammer recently phrased it, “Smaller government, I made it work, I created jobs.” Romney, on the other hand, simply can’t press the President on unemployment without being reminded that the Bay State “ranked 47th in the entire country in jobs growth” during his term as Massachusetts Governor. In other words, while Perry can go on the offensive, Romney would be reduced to defending his own record rather than highlighting Obama’s abysmal performance on the economy.

Romney’s inability to press the President on job creation would be compounded by his impotence on Obamacare. At least half of the voters are still seething about that pernicious piece of legislation and the political skulduggery that was used to ram it down their throats. These voters will expect the Republican presidential nominee to go after the President on Obamacare, and Romney is utterly toothless on that issue. Why? The two-thousand page monstrosity that the White House and its legions of allies in the “news” media hilariously call the “Affordable Care Act” was modeled after the Massachusetts “universal coverage” legislation that Romney himself signed into law in 2006. And that ill-conceived law, commonly known as Romneycare, has been a fiscal and medical disaster for the Bay State.

Thus, Romney can’t criticize Obamacare’s many offensive features without looking like a cheap political flip-flopper. He cannot, for example, credibly denounce the egregious individual mandate because it is modeled after a similar provision of Romneycare. Nor will his oft-repeated point that the Massachusetts mandate was enacted at the state level, and is therefore constitutional, cut much ice with the voters. They will be less interested in arcane nuances of the Commerce Clause than in the fact that they will be forced to buy government-approved insurance whether they want it or not. Likewise, Romney can’t hit the President for producing a “reform” law that Obama’s own administration admits will increase rather than decrease medical costs. His own health care “reform” law produced identical results.

Rick Perry suffers from none of Romney’s disabilities on health care. First, he isn’t burdened by a failed health care albatross that will prevent him from aggressively going after the President on Obamacare. Unlike Romney, he can vehemently denounce the insurance mandate as an unconstitutional attack on individual liberty without having any similar abomination in his own record thrown back in his face. Moreover, because his record in Texas has emphasized the free market rather than state interference, he can credibly denounce the President’s top-down approach to health care reform. While Romney must live down an Obama-like inclination toward government-imposed solutions, Perry’s record demonstrates a clear bias in the other direction and allows him to more freely criticize Obama’s big-government philosophy.

This, of course, begs the following question: How do the results of Perry’s approach compare to those of Romney’s? Well, as Avik Roy recently put it, “If you’re most concerned about runaway government spending, Perry is the clear winner. If the rising cost of health insurance is your primary worry, Perry wins there too.” Among the reasons Perry wins in these areas is tort reform. In 2003, Perry convinced Texas voters to approve a cap on non-economic medical malpractice damages for physicians and hospitals. This initiative not only helped control the rise of health care costs due to defensive medicine, it helped deliver Texas from a growing problem that still bedevils Massachusetts — physician shortages. In fact, tort reform has worked so well in this regard that the New York Times reluctantly reported its success.

And success on the issues that concern the actual voters, rather than the opinions of establishment retreads, is the only foundation upon which any Republican can build a 2012 victory over Barack Obama. Regardless of which candidate wins the GOP presidential nomination, the President and his minions will use the same strategy. Because they cannot run on their record, they will promulgate a few disingenuous talking points about the real issues and then launch a vicious campaign of personal vilification. Only a candidate with the support of rank-and-file Republicans, including Tea Partiers, and a clear record of success on jobs and health care will be able to survive and overcome this strategy. Rick Perry has what it takes and Mitt Romney doesn’t.

Rick Perry has military service, Romney-nor not one of his four sons, have ever made such a decision to serve their country. Character?

I'll go with Perry; however, my first choice still remains Gov. Palin.

Mike Hawk| 8.30.11 @ 6:35AM

Rick Perry was discharged from the Air Force with the rank of Captain after serving from 1972-1977. He flew C-130s as an Aircraft Commander. He is an Eagle Scout and so is his son. THose are two big pluses for the Gov.

Obama has distain for the military, dislikes Scouting and what it stands for and compares in no way on the political creds. Community Organizer vs Governor for three terms. Who would you pick??

Michael Tomlinson| 8.30.11 @ 8:06AM

Mike more proof Rick Perry is a man of the people. As a young man Rick Perry was serving his country while pictures of Barack Obama reveal a male gay prostitute addicted to fags/cigs.

Yves Bauer| 8.30.11 @ 11:06AM

@ Michael

Your disdain for President Obama is quite obvious. However have a grain of respect for the man, he is our President. What is equally clear from your wise words, is that you dislike homosexuals. It's idiots like you who weaken the image of the Republican Party by comments like this on the internet, or in public. It's a shame and I think you should delete it or the moderators should take care of it....

If someone had said that about President Bush when he was still in office, I am sure that if someone were to post the exact same words except replace Obama with Bush, you would have been up in arms!

He is your President, respect him.

irish19| 8.30.11 @ 11:12AM

I respect the office. I do not necessarily respect the man sitting in it. That respect must be earned, and the America-hating hack currently occupying it has not done so.

Ray Burke| 9.1.11 @ 1:05PM

America hating hack. Love it !!! A very apt description.

VBMax| 8.30.11 @ 11:14AM

Are you kidding? Who can have respect for a criminal but another criminal?

Doctor Right| 8.30.11 @ 11:57AM

Get lost.

I despise Obama - viscerally. I have ZERO respect for him as a man, and as President.

Does that bother you?

Tough. Deal.

Nathan Brittle| 8.30.11 @ 2:14PM

absolutely right! respect must be earned. he has NO respect for the office, the American people or our country.

lily | 8.30.11 @ 9:32PM

Lets not get too carried away with Perry, he has some serious chinks in his armor but Romney is a big fat phony F$%#.

Respect for this lier, Manchurian candidate of a president hell bent to destroy our beloved country? Never, never, never. He is the enemy from within well protected by the equally scornful libertine news media.

Jack in Wi.| 8.30.11 @ 7:07PM

W. was awful and is the reason Obama is in the White House right now. His old man gave us Clinton. Will we never be free of the curse of the Bush's and their buddies? Perry is now running against military adventurism, just like Bush was for a humble foreign policy with no nation building. They re all trying to be bad immitations of Ron Paul. It won't work we have the original.

irish19| 8.30.11 @ 8:01PM

And you can keep him, with our compliments.

Jack in Wi. | 8.30.11 @ 10:53PM

You can keep Bush and his younger brother Perry. They are both of pair of dolts. They look alike. They talk alike. The big question is who will be Perry's Cheney? Anyhow I like the fact that there is going to be a fight to the death in the Republican party. If we nominate someone like Perry or Romney, turn off the lights. This party is over.

irish19| 8.30.11 @ 11:15PM

I like that fact too. This will be a fight for the party's soul. While Perry almost certainly has his flaws, at least he knows how to improve an economy at the state level. And he knows how to work and play well with others-like legislators. Look for him not to hinder the passage of conservative legislation, provided, of course, we can take control of the Senate with conservatives and keep (hopefully enlarge) the numbers of conservatives in the House.

beebop| 8.31.11 @ 5:47AM

Why don't you post that someplace where people like you drool in your hatred of the majority of Americans? You obviously are in the minority here.

Ray Burke| 9.1.11 @ 1:14PM

Wrong !!! Your party will soon be over. Our party begins in November of next year.

RiverKing| 9.1.11 @ 5:08PM

I really don't want to believe that 0 is intent on destroying this country. Can anyone provide solid evidence...not words from his TelePrompter...that this administration is not dedicated to destruction of the U.S. as a free country?

Boar Hunter| 8.30.11 @ 6:07PM

President Bush played 24 rounds of golf over eight years. That's an average of one game every four months and you liberals screamed bloody murder every time he hit the ball. More than a few of us still remember the left's treatment of Bush, so spare us the give Obama a chance, "he's your president too" tripe.

In less than two years in office, Obama has played 52 rounds of golf and all we hear from you and the evil vermin you represent is crickets.

I believe Obama is a dope smoking, racist, anti-American terrorist supporting Marxist who has "acted stupidly" during his entire time in office. Obama despises anything patriotic, denigrates anything he deems Christian, yet throws White House parties to encourage and support every muslim holiday you can name.

You feign outrage because someone says the word "fag" when it's Obama's muslims, not we Christians, who behead the homosexuals you claim to hold so dear. They are cutting peoples heads off you idiot, where is your outrage for that?...tic...tock...tick...and still we wait.

Obama and his reprehensible wife publicly embarrass and shame America time after time with their inappropriate gifts and social mistakes. They have no class and are bereft of any sense of protocol. They make one seemingly unintended cultural mistake after another, yet, once again the left gives him a pass.

Devoid of honor or respect for the office he holds, Obama is perpetually photographed with his feet on America's furniture. Obama fails to comprehend that it is the American people and not himself he dishonors when he bows before anyone.

I hope I have made my disdain for President Obama and all liberals "quite obvious." I have not one grain of respect for the man who is our President. America has not been "reset," it has been "overcharged" and I want my money back.

Papa Ray| 8.30.11 @ 10:12PM

Boar Hunter, your comment is priceless. I request permission to repost it in various places with credit to you.
Keep up the spirit, the election seems far away now but it really isn't and we must make sure everyone understands the importance of it.

No matter who is running against the shyster liberal idiot who is our wantabe fake president now, Obama must be kicked out of not only the presidency but our Republic. Then Congress is next!

Boar Hunter| 8.31.11 @ 1:54AM

Permission granted. lol.

Jack in Wi. | 8.30.11 @ 10:56PM

All I know is that Bush was a drunk and probably dabbled in drugs as well. I have been around boozers long enough to see a guy that likes a few drinks in Perry as well. Of course I never did hold a man's drinking against him, if he didn't kill anyone and could do the job.

beebop| 8.31.11 @ 5:51AM

Jack? You're a flack. If you "never did hold a man's drinking against him," then why bring it up? Is that the best you got? And I am so curious as to why Bush is still the standard by which we are to measure 0bama if the latter is the intellectual, cultural and political icon you worship? Can't the man stand on his own "merits?" Wait .... we know the answer to that one.

Ray Burke| 9.1.11 @ 1:24PM

Fabulous rant !!! I love every syllable of it and couldn't agree more. Thanks for putting my thoughts into words.

Delta Zelda| 8.30.11 @ 6:44PM

I havve no respect for a person who does not respect his country. Since he thinks America is so bad, why is he still here? Why doesn't go to Saudi, Iran, Dubai, etc.? Because America is the only country in which a parasite can live off someone else on the grand scale the Obamas do.

BackToBasics| 8.30.11 @ 6:54PM

When Obam himself shows respect for the office of the presidency and for America, its' constitution and it's people, I will show more respect for him.

Michael Tomlinson| 8.30.11 @ 11:34PM

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah . . . Where were you went the Democrat were attacking Presidents Reagan and Bush (41 & 43). Have you seen the young Obama he looks like a gay male whore sucking on a cig/fag.

hank beckel| 8.31.11 @ 8:45PM

As a member of the board of directors(voters), I respect all of our employees(president, congress) who do their jobs well. Those who don't must be held to account. The president is not above us and deserves no special respect.

Jack in Wi.| 8.30.11 @ 7:12PM

Rick Perry looks like Bush sounds like Bush and say anything that will get him a vote. No thank you. The country needs real leadership. Dr. Ron Paul has been right for decades. Now Rick Perry claims to be against the Fed and military adventureism. He is nothing but a chamealon and charleton. Let the debates begin. It should be some real fun times.

beebop| 8.31.11 @ 5:53AM

You know, I lived in Texas for 25 years and to lump these two men together is like saying all African Americans look alike .... except that in your world the former is all you have to combat the 0bama shrinking poll numbers and the latter is what strikes you as "racist" and the final argument in nearly any discussion with a 0bama supporter. I don't even respond to the charge.

idalily| 8.30.11 @ 5:19PM

Amazing how people view things. Those on the left are obsessed with the superficial stuff. I don't care what gender the President is, or what color. I don't care how he pronounces words, how good he is as a public speaker, what college he went to, or what state he's from. I care about his fiscal policy, his leadership ability, his common sense, and his ability to keep government out of my wallet and out of my business as much as possible. That is the difference between a person who uses emotion versus one who uses critical thinking. In other words, it's the difference between a liberal and a conservative.

Ray Burke| 9.1.11 @ 1:31PM

Nicely put.

Michael Handley| 8.31.11 @ 3:12PM

To whichever Clint is the real one,
Let's suppose Paul wins the nomination. The campaign will stress his ties to KKK/Nazi sympathizers and some of his nuttier pronouncements on foreign policy. It will also highlight his followers such as yourself who are both vile and aggressively obnoxious. This will not endear him to those independents you and the others claim he can win. Game, set, match to zero. Goodbye America.
So either clean up your act and start acting like a civilized human being or you can kiss any chance of Paul's getting the nomination goodbye.

Asked & Answered.

"Michael Scheuer, who was the head analyst at the CIA’s bin Laden unit, Alec Station, and authored the books Through Our Enemies Eyes and Imperial Hubris, said “I thought Mr. Paul captured it the other night exactly correctly. This war is dangerous to America because it’s based, not on gender equality, as Mr. Giuliani suggested, or any other kind of freedom, but simply because of what we do in the Islamic World – because ‘we’re over there,’ basically, as Mr. Paul said in the debate.”

Scheuer also agreed with Dr. Paul’s statement in the debate that the war in Iraq was a diversion from capturing or killing Osama bin Laden and that bin Laden was “delighted” that the U.S. is occupying Iraq as it has become a training ground and recruiting tool for new jihadists joining the movement."

Milpundit | 8.30.11 @ 9:54AM

I second RJ's comment. Perry also shows the good sense to get out of the way of American creativity. That's why Texas leads the nation in job creation. It also helps that constitutionally the Texas governor has limited powers.

RCV| 8.30.11 @ 11:19AM

Governor Perry has created two government jobs in Texas for every one new private sector job. I guess that's one way to grow an economy.

Drunken Sailor| 8.30.11 @ 12:57PM

Federal jobs increased under Obama by 25,000. Overall jobs is -2.4 million.

I think Perry has him beat on that score.

Nick| 8.30.11 @ 6:48PM

RCV,

Those are just democrat talking-points.
Or, do you have a source for that statistic?

RCV| 8.30.11 @ 10:32PM

Nick - I had read the statement in a Washington Post article. But in attempting to verify the claim, I came across a detailed study published in the San Antonio News a few days ago. That study shows that during Perry's tenure as Governor, private sector job growth increased by 10% while government sector job growth was up 18%. But the actual growth in pure numbers of private sector jobs was much higher, so the Post claim was wrong. It was the percentage of government job growth that was almost twice as high.

Nick| 8.30.11 @ 11:54PM

RCV,

Just as I figured.

Did this study claim that Governor Perry was the one responsible for the growth in all of those government jobs? Or, just some of them? Or, any of them?

Because, as I'm sure you are aware, one of the other democrat talking points is that the Governor of Texas has no real power to do anything.

So, which is it?

Is Governor Perry responsible for the increase of government jobs, and, therefore, also responsible for the increase in private sector jobs? Or, is he almost powerless, and, therefore, not to blame for the increase in government jobs?

Also, don't you think that it is wrong for the democrats and the Washington Post to perpetrate such a fraud on the American people?

RCV| 8.31.11 @ 12:47PM

I do - I always think it's wrong to mislead. The point of the San Antonio article was quite different: it was that Governor Perry, like President Reagan (for whom I voted), spoke of reducing the size of government, but did not. That's an accurate observation.

Nick| 8.31.11 @ 6:10PM

RCV,

The issue is more complicated than that.

I don't think it is a simple matter of hypocrisy or false claims of reducing the size of government.

By your own admission, private sector job growth "was much higher" than public sector job growth, in real numbers. We also know that Texas had the biggest increase in population during the past decade. Would these facts not necessitate an increase in government employment?

And, you never answered my question. Did the study, cited in the San Antonio News, break down the growth in public sector jobs between municipalities, county, and state? They couldn't have all been state jobs, or were they?

And, if the study dealt with only increases in state jobs, how does this square with the democrat talking point that the Governor of Texas has no real power to do anything in the state?

This is the danger of following talking points.

RCV| 8.31.11 @ 10:09PM

Of course an increase in population necessitates increased government staffing and expenditures -- on the federal as well as state and local levels. In our complex society, government performs and must perform an increasing array of tasks to help insure safety, provide for community infrastructure, regulate a host of interactions among people, businesses, criminal elements and foreign agencies. It costs money, in Texas, in California, in Washington. Those who pretend otherwise in their public pronouncements face the realities when they actually govern, whether they're Ronald Reagan or Rick Perry.

RCV| 9.1.11 @ 11:26AM

BTW Nick, I have said before and still believe that the strongest ticket the GOP could field is Peryy/Rubio.

Nick| 9.1.11 @ 6:23PM

RCV,

You may be right. I would vote for that ticket, even with my reservations about Governor Perry.

My main point was about talking points, and, specifically, how the liberal democrat t.p.'s against Mr. Perry contradict each other.

beebop| 8.31.11 @ 5:58AM

RCV ....

It strikes me as the height of hilarious hyprocisy for a democrat to manufacture outrage about Republican governors vis-a-vis government jobs. Democrats actually believe that government jobs PRODUCE something ....

RCV| 8.31.11 @ 12:50PM

The point isn't outrage at creating government jobs. It's about the hypocrisy of claiming to reduce government while actually enlarging it. Unlike many in the Tea Party, the critics believe that government is necessary and can be beneficial.

Jack in Wi. | 8.30.11 @ 11:29PM

You are defending Israeli Terrorists who kill ten times more then they receive. You know that I condemn all violence and want only peace in the Middle East. That can only happen when the Palistinians have equal rights in a one state democracy. There should also be massive reparations to the Palistinians for all the theft, murder and torture of the last 63 years. Integrate Israel now. If it is good enough for Missisipi and South Africa it is good enough for Israel. End the terror end the hate integrate the Israeli state. Equal rights for all in one, united Israel Palistine.

Nick| 8.31.11 @ 12:08AM

I defend Israel's right to defend herself, der schweinehund-fuhrer.

The Moslem Arabs should thank allah that they live in Israel, and, not one of the other Moslem hell-holes. The Christian Arabs thank God that they live in Israel.

Also, it's spelled Palestine, you illiterate moron.

How'd you get back from Tel-Aviv so quickly, Jack-boot?

Jack in Wi.| 8.31.11 @ 1:08AM

You are a fool. When the Muslims ran Palistine the Christians were 30% of the population. Now they are 3% in Israel. I know some Christian Palistinians . I never heard them say a good word about Israel. The places where Christians always did best in the Middle East were Egypt, Palistine, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq. Israel has interferred in all of them and helped get rid of the secular rulers who were treating the Christian populations best. The radicals have taken over in Iraq and Egypt, and are trying to do the same in Syria. Gaddaffi had freeedom of religion in Libya. They are already letting the radicals take over. The creation of Israel has been an unmitigated disaster for Middle East Christians. The radicals blame them for our pushing Israel down their throats. The only solution that holds any hope for the Christians and Jews in the Middle East is a true integrated state in Israel Paslisitne with true freedom of religion for all sects. Let the Jews of Israel be a light onto the world Instead of a black night.

RCV| 8.31.11 @ 12:54PM

Jack - I know many Palestinian and Lebanese Christians (along with Syrian and Iraqi Christians). While many of them are not supporters of Israel, every one of them left their native countries because of the radicalization of their Muslim neighbors and the belief that they no longer felt safe as non-Muslims in their Arab communities. I know of no Christian in Israel who feels in any way threatened because of their religion.

RCV| 8.31.11 @ 12:58PM

There is no country in the Middle East where Muslims are a majority where there is "true freedom of religion for all sects." Under Sharia law, that is an impossibility, because the overt display of any symbols of any faith but Islam is prohibited. The conversion of any person from Islam to another religion is an act punishable by death. Christians in Saudi Arabia must meet in secret to hold services; Jews are not allowed in the country.

There is one country, and one country only in the Middle East that allows people of all faiths to openly worship as they choose. that country is Israel.

Ron Paul Polling In Third Place

AUGUST 29th,2011:

Much of the media and pundit-class have already pronounced the Republican primary a troika: Rick Perry, Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann. That assumption may merit revision. According to a new Gallup survey, Texas libertarian Rep. Ron Paul has risen to third place among GOP primary voters, pushing aside Bachmann. Perry has taken the lead since his recent campaign announcement at 29%, dislodging heretofore front runner Mitt Romney to second place at 17%, followed by Paul at 13%. Bachmann scored 10% and the rest of the field registered in single digits. "

They say a lie travels the world while truth boards the train. By the time that the truth comes out about Rick Perry it may be too late. Rick Perry seems to be on both sides of many issues.

Rick Perry wrote a book entitled "Fed Up" It is loaded with lots of right wing fringe ideas -the title might as well have been "How to Beat Me-Rick Perry in 2012." If Rick Perry wins the GOP nomination, he will be painted as a Tea Party Crazy.

Michael Tomlinson| 8.30.11 @ 7:07AM

While not a member of the Tea Party I think it is evident they're patriots who've stood up to the corruption, bullying and incomptence of the worst President in US history Barack "The Inane" Obama.

Rick Perry will have an easy time beating the failure that is Barack Obama. He need only remind people, “Unless the economy turns around in the next 18 months, Obama is on track to have the worst jobs record of any president in the modern era. That would be an accurate statement.” Glenn Kessler, fact checker for the Washington Post.

Fewer Americans are working full-time today than when Mr. Obama took office, more than 900,000 full-time jobs were lost in the last four months alone, and long-term unemployment is at a post-World War II high.

Whereas uder his stewardship Texas has created more jobs than the rest of the US. During Obama’s first year in office, more than half (119,000) of all the new jobs in the United States were created in Rick Perry’s business-friendly Texas, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Between January 2001 and June 2010, the BLS calculates, Texas’ non-farm employment grew from 9,542,400 in January 2001, when Perry took office, to 10,395,800 in June 2010 — an increase of 853,400 or 8.9 percent. Big-government California simultaneously lost 827,800 jobs. As a right-to-work state that taxes neither personal income nor capital gains over the same decade Texas added more jobs than the other 49 states combined. And since the recovery began, Texas has created 37 percent of America’s net new jobs. Again employment in Texas grew more than in the other 49 states combined. Since June 2009, when the recession officially ended, Texas has produced 265,300 net jobs, equal to 36.7 percent of the 722,200 positions created nationwide. Texas isn't just the fastest growing... it's growing over twice as fast as the second fastest state and three times as fast as the third. Given that Texas is huge, this growth is incredible.

As America’s No. 1 exporting state, Perry’s Texas shipped $206.6 billion in goods abroad last year, composing 16 percent of America’s $1.28 trillion in exports. California’s $14.4 billion in exports ranked it second, with 11.2 percent of U.S. outflow.

Texas with Republican governors (1996-2009 or Bush and Perry) who refused to raise taxes and restrained spending saw per capita income jump by more than 42%. Since the recession started hourly wages in Texas have increased at a 6th fastest pace in the nation. Employment was up 10.5% in Texas.

The whiny Obama and Democrats are saying that “Obama created the jobs in Texas.” That is absurd and laughable. If Obama did it for Texas why did he fail in the rest of the nation and why is he so unpopular in Texas? Critics of Perry malign the record of job creation as a way to attack the candidate, but it is important to realize nonpartisan analyses were on to what was happening in Texas long before Perry considered running for president. In 2009, one nonpartisan poll of business executives ranked Texas as "the No. 1 state to do business" for the fourth year in a row. And, the Economist magazine highlighted Texas in 2009 as "Lone Star Rising" with a subtitle to its special report: "Thanks to low taxes and light regulation, Texas is booming." This was in addition to several favorable data points comparing Texas to California in a separate piece in the magazine.

Perry accepted the stimulus money from Obama and then complained that he gave it him. How does Perry tell Obama that he has spent our taxpayer dollars recklessly when Perry himself has been part of the problem and not the solution?

Michael Tomlinson| 8.30.11 @ 8:03AM

I guess he could ask Ron Paul he has a gift with convincing people of the rightness of taking Federal money.

But the real difference is Obama wasted your money and destroyed more than 2.5 million jobs while Rick Perry in Texas created over a million jobs during roughly the same period. Seems Rick wins again.

A tree stump should be able to beat Obama right now. I have the opinion that the Democrats might dump him for someone more electable. Perry and Romney are just 2 more of the countryclub elites, that have sunk the country. They would be just another pair of disciples of bailouts for their buddies, and endless war for the military industrial complex. That is all the Republicans have run since 1988. The country and the Party can't stand more of the same. The country doesn't need to elect someone who's main platform is I am not Obama.

"Goldwater's right-wing campaign platform ultimately failed to gain the support of the electorate[3] and he lost the 1964 presidential election to incumbent Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson by one of the largest landslides in history, bringing down many Republican candidates as well. The Johnson campaign and other critics painted him as a reactionary.

"Rasmussen Has Ron Paul Running Closest With Obama
Erik Hayden Aug 24, 2011 3,306 Views Comments (19)

Who does the president fare worst against in a head-to-head matchup? On Wednesday, Rasmussen released its latest nationwide early campaign survey. And right now, Barack Obama does well against Mitt Romney (46 to 38 percent) and narrowly leads Perry (43 to 40 percent) and Michele Bachmann (43 to 39 percent).

Which means, if you combine these results with the Rasmussen poll released Tuesday, the GOP candidate doing the best against the president is....Ron Paul? Yesterday's head-to-head poll showed the libertarian trailing the president 39 to 38 percent, by presumably the same methodology."

Drunken Sailor| 8.30.11 @ 11:07AM

Guess you missed this part of the poll Clint-wit (thanks DR.)

The president and Texas Republican Congressman Ron Paul are running almost dead even, but given that matchup, 22% either prefer another candidate or remain undecided.

In other words Ron Paul is only even with Obama IF it was just a race between them. That means only IF Ron Paul wins the primary. Considering he is polled even behind people who are not running that seems very unlikely.

irish19| 8.30.11 @ 11:22AM

It does, however, admirably illustrate Jack's point above; to with, that even a tree stump should be able to beat zero in 2012.

Clint| 8.30.11 @ 3:08PM

Drunken Sailor| 8.30.11 @ 3:32PM

" Tea party criticism about Perry's immigration record is now appearing on activist blogs in Arizona and New Hampshire.

We have not seen much at all on immigration, nothing at all," said Suzanne Guggenheim, a Texas-based member of the Tea Party Patriots National Leadership Council. "There is some disappointment" with his leadership on the issue.
f Perry becomes president, Texas illegal immigration opponents say, conservative voters shouldn't expect tough leadership on the issue.

JoAnn Fleming, chairwoman of the Tea Party Caucus advisory committee to the Texas Legislature, said, "We have a little bit of trouble imagining that our governor could do that on the national level."

Drunken Sailor| 8.30.11 @ 4:15PM

And from the Tea pary Caucus advisory committee to the Texas Legislature.

"Greg Holloway of Austin made it clear that the advisory committee knows its limitations. “While we intend to bring the views of grassroots conservatives across Texas to the attention of the Tea Party Caucus, we do not claim that we speak for any tea party, 9-12 or other groups,” said Holloway. “These groups have been, and will continue to be, speaking for themselves. We hope, however, that we can provide a sounding board for the Tea Party Caucus on issues that fall squarely within our tea party principles.”

So give us some more of the lowdown on Perry. Is he worth supporting? Enquiring minds and all.

kate| 8.30.11 @ 11:52PM

I am relatively new to Texas, so I probably don't know more than you. I think it is sad that we can't find a candidate with some ba@@s to stand up for capitalism and freedom.
Perry/Rubio might mean a new future.
Perry is tough and Rubio is smart and charismatic. (albeit young)
I know that Texas is thriving. I've never seen people work so hard. Day and night.
And they seem happy! Despite the fire ants and traffic...
It is almost like they know they have a fighting chance at the good life.
I know that redistribution of wealth is a grand idea, but it will fail, because people won't work day and night to have it taken from them.
I know that most conservatives are aware of right and wrong and race simply has no weight in their political thinking.
If it takes a cowboy to do the right thing, then so be it.
We cannot be anti-business and expect people to prosper and hire. We can't be weak and expect the enemy to admire us. We can't print money and think it will solve our problems.
I believe we need a strong leader with a vision and enough common sense to bring in the right experts to put us on the right track.
Perception is everything.

kate| 8.31.11 @ 12:15AM

Or ......I might just quote Nite, who is a real Texan and posted last on this blog.
"Nite| 8.30.11 @ 10:27PM

I am from TX and have voted for Perry in several elections and will do so again. Let clear a few things up. He believes in States rights. The Arizona immigration law was not passed by TX state Legislature, so Perry could not do so on his own. He has asked Obama several times to put troops on the border and has been refused. He has been fighting with Obama over the EPA regulations, which would destroy TX energy industry. Now as to the uninsured population in TX, there is a large illegal population and they are unlikely to have health insurance and also do not qualify for Medicaid. Perry did not come from wealth, so better understands the average voter. He is not ignorant or stupid as one poster indicated. He says what he means and means what he says. He is conservative, believes in balancing the budget, strong military, friend of Israel (this is important to me) he actually has a resume and can beat Obama and his teleprompter. He also has never lost an election."

Consider this...| 8.30.11 @ 7:36AM

I think one of the interesting things about Rick Perry is that -- someone made the point to me the other day that he's all the things -- he actually is what everyone thought Bush was. He -- the swashbuckling Texan who doesn't have a command of policy, isn't a details guy -- that actually is Rick Perry. He really is a Texan and he really does not care about policy as much as he does about the game. He loves -- he's a great campaigner. That's one of the reasons he's been so successful.

Jack in Wi.| 8.30.11 @ 10:32AM

If Perry doesn't want to sound like Bush he should dump his foreign policy and call for bringing all the troops home now from overseas. It should of been done 20 years ago. Then this country wouldn't be broke and all these so called allies could have done their own defense. All we have done is finance socialism in Europe and Israel. Both places need to spend their own money and blood on their defenses not those of Americans. I further predict that some of the candidates will call for bringing the troops home now. I would guess Romney will move in that direction and soon. Some of you guys may hate Ron Paul, but he is setting the agenda for debate on both foreign and domestic policy.

Interesting that Catron has a Degree in Liberal Studies from Oglethorpe...a pretty liberal school itself. He should know that Health Care in Texas is pretty good for Doctors.....and pretty lousy for patients, especially Poor patients. And Perry has done zip to improve health care for everybody, but he's done quite a bit for Doctors. Some of his very best friends ( donors ) are Doctors.
As far as " Insurance mandates," Catron as the resident savant is well aware of the difference between Legislative Mandates .....and Executive Mandates. Perry's Gardasil mandate was HIS mandate, not the Texas legislature. He was overridden by his OWN GOP legislature with a veto proof majority when he refused to change the mandate. Yes, he said he was dumb to do it.....and we are all finding out he is right.

It's a damning indictment of his character. It shows he is willing to throw the serfs under the bus for the sake of loyalty to contributors (Merck, in this case). Will he do the same as president? How about an executive order mandating vaccinations based on whatever Merck other Big Pharma firms decide they need to sell? And with "Chiner" the largest creditor, what would he be willing to do for them? Can we count on Congress to overturn his EOs? I don't think so.

As Perry would say, Adios, mofo

kate| 8.30.11 @ 3:40PM

My understanding is that Perry has acknowledged that he made a mistake mandating the vaccination.
I read that, because it is so expensive, mandating it was the only way the state could off- set the cost to those who couldn't afford it.
A mistake. He admitted it.
Everyone is so cynical. Why is it that Texans are always in a little "conspiracy" to make their "friends" rich, but left are doing it for the sake of "ideas".
I think it is the other way around.

Excellent article. It reflects reality not the opinion of the Republican elite completely out of touch with Republican rank and file. Romney has no chance to win, no spontaneity, Perry connects better with people and He produced results.

Have you considered| 8.30.11 @ 7:12AM

I don't believe I could even talk myself into pulling the lever for Romney.

That said, although I haven't watched any Perry speeches yet, I do have a couple nits to pick with what I have read so far.

1) His support for wind power makes me question his mathematical abilities and his motivations. It is cost prohibitive and unreliable, yet he supported subsidies and mandates for for this industry. If you don't believe in AGW, which he says he doesn't, then you simply can't articulate a good reason to support wind power that makes any sense whatsoever.

2) Texas did not borrow money until Perry became governor. They are now over 33Billion in debt. If you think that today's borrowing is tomorrows taxes like I do, you might frown on this.

3) Yes, the executive order on the cancer vaccine bothers me on several levels. That his former Chief of Staff worked for Merck's government affairs at the time shows lobby influence beyond an acceptable level. I have seen Perry's defenders argue that it did have an opt out, and if you think you should have to fight a legal battle with city hall before you exercise your right to opt out, then he appears to be your guy.

4) LaRaza and the Texas Dream Act. If you believe that taxpayers should subsidize illegal's education, then so be it. His talking this week about getting Janet Napolitano to reimburse Texas for the cost of jailing criminal illegals is simply a pander to those of us who do not support open borders, amnesty, and the Dream Act. He has at least tacitly approved Houston's and other Texas cities sanctuary city policies, so he at this point, he is pandering to both sides of this issue.

But I will say, that just about ANY person is better than Obama, but I'm not convinced that Perry would be a good pick.

Mike D.| 8.30.11 @ 7:28AM

I AM convinced that Romney is definately a WORSE pick though. I could probably hold my nose and vote for Perry, but Romney is not an option. Romney is just the same process that this RINO dominated party goes through every election, its his turn. It was Doles turn, then it was McCains turn..............

Sean| 8.30.11 @ 1:13PM

" Perry has troubled relationship with tea party

Tea Party groups from New Hampshire to Texas are collaborating to criticize Perry's record on immigration, public health and spending and his former affiliation with the Democratic Party.

Austin Tea Party activist Don Zimmerman, like many tea party activists in Texas and New Hampshire, prefer libertarian Rep. Ron Paul in his third presidential bid. Paul, Zimmerman said, is the true tea party favorite.

"Ron Paul pretty much invented the national tea party," said Zimmerman, a member of the Texas State Republican Executive Committee. "It's really unfair for these other candidates to come along and claim to be the tea party favorite. It's almost like it's starting to lose its meaning."

"Have You Considered"....Loved your four points, very thought-provoking. The primary season is for peeling back the layers and trying to look as deep as can into each canidate. I think making up ones mind to early in the process is shallow. For my part, I like nearly all of the current Republican canidate with one or two excetion. It is my opinion, at this point in time, Fred Flintstone could beat Barry Obama. If Romney could shake the "RINO's next in line" lable, he would be a very attractive canidate. Time will tell.

Doctor Right| 8.30.11 @ 8:21AM

Sorry, but I can't lock arms with the "No Romney no matter what" crowd.

I'd vote for an orange juice can if it had a chance to beat Obama.

Is Romney the ideal candidate? No. But who is? Regardless, "President" Romney on his worst day would be better than an unleashed, 2nd-term Obama with no concerns for re-election in 2016.

Additionally, "President" Romney would not likely ignore a Conservative, Tea Party-driven House and Senate if he wanted to be re-elected in 2016.

The most important thing to remember for 2012 is "ABO" - Anybody But Obama.

To that end, if Romney is the nominee, I'll pull the lever for him. He'll, if it comes to that, I'd vote for Ron Paul or John Huntsman if it meant defeating Obama.

NOTHING could be worse for this country than a second term for Obama.

Heres another newsflash for your entertainment. Isreal isn't going anywhere, better get used to it because if they do "go somewhere" the entire middle east is going with them. They have 300+ nuclear warheads that say so. Whether your anti-Jewish/Isreal obsession can handle that or not is your problem.

Have you considered| 8.30.11 @ 10:12AM

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the US has a military alliance with Isreal via ratified treaty.

I am not well versed in this treaty, and I do not know if it calls upon the US to defend Isreal in the event that they start a war...do any of you?

I believe Isreal has every right as a sovereign nation to defend itself, and I don't think it is right that the US dictate to them in this area unless this too is a component of our treaty.

I will say that I am not a proponent of give away foreign aid in any measure. I believe if US citizens want to contribute to any country, it should be voluntary and routed through a charity or other means. Compulsory charity is anathema to the Constitution.

I simply do not believe that our founders, who were frugal and wise, and believed Only in taxation to fund the Enumerated Powers as specified in Article 1, Section 8, would agree with this use of tax dollars.

Jack in Wi.| 8.30.11 @ 4:39PM

Israel has no common defense treaty with the United States. We have carried them on our backs for years but we don't have anything on paper. The hundreds of billions we have squandered on israel is Nothing but an unconstitutional subsidy to Jewish and Christian zionist religious fantasies.

Mike D.| 8.30.11 @ 6:42PM

Yeah, just like we carry Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the Balkans, and god knows how many other clients on our backs just like Isreal. So what? Don't like Jews Huh? The candidate who actually makes his or her case with a clear idea of how to make things work--one who prove they are competent no matter what the MSM garbage brings us--and, the one who can force Obama and his friends out of the vacation closet and get in a debate on the issues--Finally, one who can show an ability to
bring even some percentage of ( let me use their given name ) Democrats into the fold--that is the one
who will win. The one who shows fear of being up front will be the loser. So far, given all of these matters Perry is the man--so far.

Tom Tancredo,
"When I ran for president in 2008, I tried to pressure the Republican candidates to take a hard line against illegal immigration. For this, Perry called me a racist.

When he first took office as governor in 2001, Perry went to Mexico and bragged about his law that granted “the children of undocumented workers” special in-state tuition at Texas colleges, the first state in the nation to do so.

“The message is simple,” Perry concluded, “educacion es el futuro, y si se puede.” Education is the future, and (echoing Cesar Chavez’s slogan) yes we can.]

Just a few weeks ago, Perry defended his decision to give in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. He said “to punish these young Texans for their parents’ actions is not what America has always been about.”

Drunken Sailor| 8.30.11 @ 2:09PM

Clint| 8.30.11 @ 3:30PM

You're Afraid Of The Tea Party, Drunk Swabbie.

" Perry led the nation in allowing undocumented immigrant students to pay in-state tuition in Texas state universities. He has been opposed to immigrant-bashing and racial profiling laws such as Arizona's SB 1070, saying they would not be right for Texas. He has questioned the effectiveness and rejected the use of the federal E-Verify system, designed for employers to check the legal status of job applicants. He has described efforts to deny citizenship to the US-born children of illegal immigrants as "divisive," and he has been critical of Republicans who spew hatred of immigrants.

Not surprisingly, the anti-immigrant organization Numbers USA gives Perry a D- grade on immigration. "

Drunken Sailor| 8.30.11 @ 4:36PM

Believe it or not. I agree with you that illegal immigrants should not get to pay in state tuition. I agree with Perry on Immigrant bashing and racial profiling though. They are not neccessary to enforce the immigration laws already in place. Which by the way is the Feds job, not the states, and is why Perry has billed the Feds for the states having to pick up the slack. He has also pushed for the Federal goverment to fulfill their role as immigration enforcement.

Oldefarte| 8.30.11 @ 2:36PM

Who cares what Obamacon Peggy Noonan thinks she's was an early supporter of Obama and has as much credibility as fellow Obamacon whores Jeffrey Hart, Bruce Bartlett or Chris Buckley. Like Pat Buchanan these Obamacons all betrayed the Reagan legacy and conservative movement long ago. It is time to start calling them what they are MSM sellouts and liberal’s pet “faux conservatives.” Ann Coulter (who recently jumped on the “gay rights” bandwagon) is blindly infatuated with moderate Chris Christie so who cares what this lovesick “kitty” thinks?

Jack in Wi.| 8.30.11 @ 10:48AM

Pat Buchanan and Ron Paul have been right on foreign policy for decades. They are the true voices of the main street Republicans and conservatives. There is no way this country can return to fiscal sanity without bringing our troops home now, and only defending our own borders and shores. They follow in the shoes of such great Republicans as Robert M. LaFollette, George Norris,Warren Harding, Herbert Hooover, Robert Taft, Everett Dirkson, Dwight Eisenhower and yes Ronald Reagan. Reagan was for negotiations with your enemies and arms reductions. He wanted to rid the earth of nuclear weapons. He also said we should stay away from the Middle East and let them solve their own problems. The Republicans used to run as the party of peace and prosperity when I was young. It is time to do it again. Vote Ron Paul . He is the one to return this country to peace and prosperity.

Michael Tomlinson| 8.30.11 @ 11:10AM

Ronald Reagan invaded Grenada. Ronald Reagan bombed Libya and if he hadn't listened to the pro-Arab wing of his cabinet he'd have bombed Iran's hirelings in the Lebanon into oblivion for murdering our Marines (Marines he sent their as Peace Keepers). He tied with George W. Bush with being the most pro-Israel President in US history.

Dwight Eisenhower continued the Korean War till we could come to an inconclusive peace, sent aid to France in Vietnam including American agents and was set to invade communist Cuba when JFK came to power and screwed up the Bay of Pigs by betraying the Cuban freedom fighters.

Rober LaFollette and George Norris (an notorious bigot and racist) were liberals and long ago lost influence in the GOP.

You need to learn some history.

Jack in Wi.| 8.30.11 @ 5:07PM

Dwight Eisenhower promised to end the Korean war and he did. He condemned the military industrial complex and this push for endless warfare. He was against our continued presence in Europe. He thought Europe had to eventually defend itself. Norris, Lafollette Hiram Johnson, Nye, Borah and all those other Republicans that oppposed the world wars were from the main street that was opposed to the big bankers and their wars. The people who are from the Communist and liberal branch of the spetrum are the Rockefeller Republicans of which the Bush's are part of. The neocons come from Trotskyite Communism and the liberal democrats. You are the scum that doesn't represent true Republicaan values. Go out and fight and pay for your own wars. We are sick of paying for your fantasies in blood and treasure.

Everything I said about Reagan is true. He saw what a mistake Lebanon was and got out. He never went back and advised Ameicans to stay away from the Middle East. He also went for treaties and negotiations with the Soviets. Many thousands of nuclear weapons were destroyed in the treaties. The neocons opposed him all the way. You point to a couple of minor schermishes and not the fact that he avoided war like the plague. He actully called the families of everyone killed on his watch. He felt a personal responsiblitiy for every soldier.

irish19| 8.30.11 @ 11:33PM

"Dwight Eisenhower promised to end the Korean war and he did."
Thereby condemning the people of North Korea to a living hell they still endure today.
And the war has never formally ended.

Michael Tomlinson| 8.30.11 @ 11:42PM

You moron there was no opposition of Reagn by so-called neo-cons. I do remember Ron Paul condemning Reagan's aggressive foreign policy and spending.

Jack in Wi.| 8.31.11 @ 1:27AM

The neocons opposed his peace efforts with Soviets all the way. You know nothing of history or politics. He just ignored them and signed the treaties. Eisenhower also told the Israeli's to get behind their borders and stay there in 1956. Another great decission. We should have told them the same thing in 1967 when they bombed the USSLiberty. The Middle East and world would be a far better place.

Michael Tomlinson| 8.30.11 @ 11:58PM

During his failed 1988 Liberterian candidacy for President did RINO Ron Paul criticize Ronald Reagan as a "failure?"

Since RINO Ron Paul likes to cloak himself in Ronald Reagan why did he call his actions to save American hostages in Grenada "evil?"

"I personally believe that the most evil thing President Reagan did as president was to order the invasion of the tiny island of Grenada. Prior to the great U.S. military victory over Grenadian forces, which consisted of not much more than mowing down three men with fishing spears, the United States populace, because of Vietnam, was sick of war. The great "victory" in Grenada caused the taste for blood and pride in national military superiority to be reignited in the bowels of the American boobsie set..." RINO Ron Paul

"The American people, unfortunately, could not see that both actions were the result of the same flawed policy.... The Grenada invasion was heralded as a great triumph and applauded by the vast majority of American people.... Worst of all, and typical of our tragic foreign policy - in the midst of the Grenada invasion designed to make the world safe for democracy by stopping the spread of communism - President Reagan, behind the scenes, was forcefully lobbying for specific aid to 'Communist-dictators' through additional IMF funding. The invasion of Grenada is hardly the victory the American people were led to believe." RINO Ron Paul

Politically isn't it true that RINO Ron Paul consistently opposed President Reagan's muscular and pro-American foreign policy? Going so far as to attack him for responding to terrorist attacks against American by Libya?

"The U.S. policy toward Libya further confirms our irrational foreign policy. Under Reagan we have been determined to pick a fight with Khadafi, defying him with naval and air maneuvers in the Gulf of Sidra. As we try to emphasize our right to navigate in international waters near Libya, we totally reject the territorial waters of Nicaragua by mining their harbors. The World Court rulings against the U.S. were ignored by the Reagan Administration...." RINO Ron Paul

Why did RINO Ron Paul equate Reagan's actions in Grenada to save American hostages to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan? Why did he gullibly parrot the liberal Democrat line that it was an October surprise?

"One discouraging aspect of Reagan's October Surprise is the huzzahing by which the American public greeted the war in Grenada. It is over-optimistic to believe that the public is opposed to war; as was the case in Vietnam, the American masses are only opposed to a war that the U.S. has difficulty in winning. Give them a quick victory, with small loss of American life, and they love it. As one Pennsylvanian said after the invasion, "I'm glad our President is a man!" Americans seem to have little interest in the immorality or illegality of the invasion, in the principle of non-intervention, or in the fact that the closest modern analogy to the US. assault on Grenada was the much-reviled Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, where the Soviets invaded a country whose Commie ruler was too Commie for the Soviets to handle. No, the average Americano seems to glory in the vicarious macho thrill of war, provided victory is swift, and the resistance of the foreign victim disappears quickly. RINO Ron Paul

While Ron Paul postures now as a supporter of Ronald Reagan isn't the truth that he fought against the Reagan agenda? Here is what RINO Paul's former chief of staff wrote demeaning and belittling President Reagan http://www.lewrockwell.com/pol.....epublican/

Oldefarte| 8.30.11 @ 2:32PM

As for trolls, you bet you can tell them a mile away. Just keep in mind first beat Obama. But there is this:
Ask your self this question: Why would Obama behave the way he is in the wake of very bad falling poll numbers. Why does he seem not to care ?

a) he assumes a one term presidency.
b) he will create a crisis that could lead to a virtual coup..
c)He will encourage voter fraud on a larger scale than has ever been known to man, woman or child.
d)he will resign and not run like LBJ ( same as a )

Perry's only in the lead right now, because Romney completely sucks!! The field isn't set in stone yet, so give it time, and things will work out!! And even if they don't work out, "any" flawed Candidate will be better than the Human Tornado that we have living in the White House right now. And even if, God forbid, Romney does get the nomination, just hold your nose, and pull the lever for him on Election Day!! That would suck, but it's better than the Commie we've got right now!! I just hope it doesn't come to that.

Please, Lord in Heaven above, send us the right answer!!

Jack in Wi.| 8.30.11 @ 10:54AM

Perry has foot in the mouth desease. I predict he will implode within a couple of months. If I had to choose between the 2, I would chose Romney. He at least ran a business and seems to be more intellignt. But really it is a deplorible choice. Either candidate would give the Demcrats a fighting chance to keep the presidency and power.

JohnK| 8.30.11 @ 11:18AM

Nonsense. Perry's political approach is not like anything the left has faced before. Read up on it. His "public comments" are anything but "foot in the mouth disease." They are well-timed, well-placed traps for the leftist media, and they bite every time. Put it this way, the media will be giving Perry more free advertising than any campaign could buy. And even if the leftists are trying to demonize him, what he's saying will actually APPEAL to the mainstream of America.

Butch| 8.30.11 @ 3:42PM

JohnK, are you from Texas? I spend a lot of time there. I am under the impression that Perry has a bit of a mean streak in him, and that makes me feel good about his candidacy. I think a mean streak will be a significant asset in the upcoming election. I think maybe he's a guy who can go for jugular without appearing particularly mean while doing it. Maybe I'm talking about the killer instinct. It's just an intuition I have, but I'd be interested in hearing Texans' responses.

JohnK| 8.30.11 @ 4:11PM

No, not from Texas. But I have been looking very close at the people he's used to develop his past campaigns. He's used a very peculiar approach in in those campaigns, using far less conventional means of communicating with constituents. Utilizing the media by tweaking them is only one method. The rest is a combination of high-tech and grassroots messaging. I believe it will be very effective both in the primaries, as well as the general election.

irish19| 8.30.11 @ 8:27PM

I so want to see someone go for Jugears' jugular and make it stick (pun intended).

Intelligent Design| 8.30.11 @ 8:11AM

No president except F. Roosevelt has been reelected while presiding over such a dismal economy with 9% unemployment. Perry will win.

Romney would make a good running mate, for Obama.

Stuart Koehl| 8.30.11 @ 8:24AM

Short answer: Perry has gonads, Romney does not.

W| 8.30.11 @ 9:59AM

The more I hear Perry, and learn about his background, the more I like him. When I read that Peggy Noonan and Karl Rove don't like him, that convinced me to vote for Perry.
Perry seved in the Air Force, flew the 130's, has a good record, good campaigner, and is likable. He can beat Obama. Romney is ok, but Perry has a better chance.
The real question is who is the VP? Bachman, or Rubio, or Santorum?

Noonan was one of those Manhattan Republicans who voted for Obama, along with Chris Buckley.

olainfree| 8.30.11 @ 8:25AM

The Dems intend to play their trusty ace in the hole: the race card. You can be sure with the unrest that is being stoked that the Dems through their surrogates will remind the grievance mongers that Mitt's daddy, George, called out the Feds to quell the Detroit race riots in 1967.

Something to think about

irish19| 8.30.11 @ 11:34AM

Herman Cain as VP would eliminate that. Cain's business experience would also help shore up Perry's (or another candidate's) bona fides in that area. However, as was pointed out above, the ticket is not yet set in stone, no matter how much the legacy media might want it to be.
I would personally be happy to see it go to the convention floor. I think we would have the strongest ticket possible were that to happen.

Ken (Old Texican)| 8.30.11 @ 8:29AM

Wow,
the trolls sure did get out of the rack early today.
They only deserve a copy paste from me:
''More Thoughts on Rick Perry
As with most men with convictions and passion…and a long public record, Rick Perry is going to be hammered from every direction.

He is going to be hammered by arch conservatives for being too ‘reasonable’ and practicing the politics of the possible. (Ronald Reagan’s phrase)

The communists, (pardon the shorthand), are lining up a whole host of lies and half truths. Many of their arrows can already be seen and heard on youtube.

The Libertarians and fellow anarchists are going to hammer him for offering to help our little girls avoid ovarian cancer, or because he encourages free trade, or because he thought it would be a good idea to build a freeway for ‘thru’ traffic for our trade with our southern neighbors. Trade in both directions I might add.

Mexico is probably Texas’ largest trading partner. Combine that with a large (legal), Hispanic population, it would be absolutely insane for a Texas Governor to posture and brag about immigration reform.
Have no doubts though; the Texas Rangers and Texas Guard troops are staying quite busy. Long term, until the US Congress outlaws “anchor babies”, any immigration debate is worthless.

(Sigh), I got to keep typing the same facts so ALL of you can get over the lies.
Yes, Perry signed an executive order.........with an opt-out clause.
That way insurance companies, (and Texas Medicaid), would pay the damned innoculation charges.
There are hundreds of thousands of single moms here in Texas with a "boyfriend"...and a series of boyfriends who routinely rape their little daughters.

Perry saw some statistics about little girls developing cancer due to that, and candidly I think Governor Perry just got pissed off.

Personally, I think he would have rather loaded up his six gun and gone out and blown those boyfriends' testicles off for child rape.
That would have made re-election pretty difficult.

See we have a lot of immigrants from failed US States. Most of them bring their failed State attitudes with them.
Now...native Texans would have simply applauded him and passed the ammunition... and re-elected him in a landslide.
We native Texans don't like child rapists.
We REALLY don't like child rapists.
Any of you that can abide child rapists...please don't move to Texas.
I'm so proud of Governor Perry making a "statement" in this regard and bringing the conversation "public".
If nothing else, a bunch of lonely moms will keep a closer eye on their looser boyfriends

Clint| 8.30.11 @ 8:44AM

Ronald Reagan,
"If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals–if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.

Now, I can’t say that I will agree with all the things that the present group who call themselves Libertarians in the sense of a party say, because I think that like in any political movement there are shades, and there are libertarians who are almost over at the point of wanting no government at all or anarchy. I believe there are legitimate government functions. There is a legitimate need in an orderly society for some government to maintain freedom or we will have tyranny by individuals. The strongest man on the block will run the neighborhood. We have government to insure that we don’t each one of us have to carry a club to defend ourselves. But again, I stand on my statement that I think that libertarianism and conservatism are traveling the same path."

f Perry becomes president, Texas illegal immigration opponents say, conservative voters shouldn't expect tough leadership on the issue.

JoAnn Fleming, chairwoman of the Tea Party Caucus advisory committee to the Texas Legislature, said, "We have a little bit of trouble imagining that our governor could do that on the national level."

Your state has millions of immigrants from a "failed" state of Mexico. After living down there (transferred by employer out of state now) and frequently returning, I will repeat the obvious - Texas is screwed in the very near future. The Latino invasion will sweep out all but the whitest or blackest district politicians. Texas will be a blue state.

Perry, along with feds has facilitated this.

Add all that to the fact that he is a goofball ignoramus, and you have four more years of the current disaster.

Ryan| 8.30.11 @ 9:09AM

Unlikely. Texas would have been a blue state by now if that were the case.

Michael Tomlinson| 8.30.11 @ 9:17AM

Mexico's unemployment (without Obama) is half of ours (with Obama) – so much for a failed state.

Texas will do just fine with its Tejano population.

But they have everything it takes to right this ship called America.
I would love to see Herman Cain become President. Who knows, it's early, maybe his favorability will increase.

P.Smith| 8.30.11 @ 8:44AM

If it comes down to a choice between Romney and Obama, I’ll pull the lever for neither. At least with Obama there would be opposition in the other branch. Romney is just another big government Republican and would do the same basic things as Obama which would ultimately lead to failure. The electorate would then take their wrath out on the Republican majority, turning it to a minority, and then with Romney you’d never know what might happen with his willingness to reach across the aisle for the sake of compromise. We would probably get ObamaCare switched to some slightly different version of RomneyCare, along with some good ole Gun Control for good measure and who knows what else.

Another serious issue is Romney’s mormanism; any man that is misled by the likes of Joseph Smith is going to be easily deceived by those within and outside the United States that wish to do us harm. But his religious affiliation might change because if he ever concludes that being a LDS member could possibly keep him from the Whitehouse, he will immediately convert to an Episcopalian.

WJ| 8.30.11 @ 8:51AM

Romney might change his mind like Gardisil Rick did when he wanted all teen age girls in Texas injected with an un-proven anti -STD drug. The legislature said no and Gardisil Rick though better of it. That outraged his masters at Merck though.

Michael Tomlinson| 8.30.11 @ 9:08AM

Maybe Obama will bring down the national debt by repealing the corrupt and hated Obamacare. Maybe RINO Ron Paul will rethink being an apologist for crazy Muslim dictators and mullahs. Maybe Mitt Romney will acknowledge Romneycare was a mistake. Maybe RINO Ron Paul will apologize for blaming US policies for 9/11. Maybe Barack Obama will admit he and soul mate Eric Holder made a bad mistake arming Mexican narco-terrorists. Maybe RINO Ron Paul will apologize for taking funds from Russian TV and thus becoming a paid agent of a foreign power. Maybe Mitt Romney will admit he shouldn’t have supported abortion on demand just to be Governor of a small New England state.

The US has no religious test for public office and that’s a good thing. Romney’s religion is not an issue and it shouldn’t be.

Ryan| 8.30.11 @ 9:11AM

It's an issue not because of the beliefs, but because of the historical issues inherent. Mormonism is simply ahistorical, with no real proof to back up its claims, something completely different from orthodox (small "o") Christianity.

Dave Williams| 8.30.11 @ 12:43PM

JohnC| 8.30.11 @ 9:03AM

Unbelievable! The naïve Republican is being snookered again by the so-called conservative media that is now presenting Perry as a conservative. Both Perry and Romney are RINO twins and globalists to boot -- shades of GWB.

Alas, El-Rushbo said globalist Rick is his dream candidate even though Perry has advocated mostly liberal positions on a host of issues.

Everybody needs to read Phyllis Shadfly’s WND article today about China. She reports that China has 3000 imported workers rebuilding the San Francisco bridge yet no GOP presidential hopeful (except Trump) or talk radio pundit talks about the many sweetheart, China job-killer deals.

Once again true conservatives have no real choice – the GOP is RINO-land.

Ryan| 8.30.11 @ 9:12AM

This is about the way I feel. Perry is a slightly more conservative version of GWB, but he's still an establishment candidate masquerading as a man of the people.

"On Iran,The President Should:

4.) Speak to the American people and tell them to expect to be brutally propagandized by U.S. citizen Israel-Firsters through AIPAC, their ubiquitous media shills, and the men and women they own in the U.S. Congress and federal bureaucracy. Urge Americans to ignore this effort by U.S. Israel-Firsters to get them to send their soldier-children to fight in a religious war in which the U.S. has no genuine national interest at stake, and in which U.S. participation would further bankrupt the country, require the reintroduction of conscription, and put America at war with all of the Muslim world -- Shia and Sunni -- for the foreseeable future."

Michael Scheuer shares the snake's views:

"In the long run, we're not safer because we're still operating on the assumption that we're hated because of our freedoms, when in fact we're hated because of our actions in the Islamic world. There's our military presence in Islamic countries, the perception that we control the Muslim world's oil production, our support for Israel and for countries that oppress Muslims.."

'Nuff said.

Sean| 8.30.11 @ 6:08PM

Ron Paul is not antimilitary in fact he served in the military and voted to go into Afghanistan. He is though opposed to nation building there. Ron Paul blames America for 9/11.

WINTERSET, Ia. – Two weeks away from the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, presidential candidate and Texas Rep. Ron Paul says that U.S. intervention in the Middle East is a main motivation behind terrorist hostilities toward America, and that Islam is not a threat to the nation.

At a campaign stop on Saturday in Winterset, one man asked Paul how terrorist groups would react if the U.S. removed its military presence in Middle Eastern nations, a move the candidate advocates.

“Which enemy are you worried that will attack our national security?” Paul asked.

“If you’re looking for specifics, I’m talking about Islam. Radical Islam,” the man answered.

“I don’t see Islam as our enemy,” Paul said. “I see that motivation is occupation and those who hate us and would like to kill us, they are motivated by our invasion of their land, the support of their dictators that they hate.”

Regarding 9/11, Paul said that attacks against the U.S. from Middle Eastern groups at home and abroad can be traced to the foreign presence of U.S. troops, as well as America’s relationships with dictator regimes.

Paul referred to a military base in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, as a key motivator in the Sept. 11th attacks. Osama bin Laden viewed it as an American desecration of holy land.

“After 9/11, (people said) ‘Oh yeah, it’s those very bad people who hate us,’ but 15 of (the hijackers) came from Saudi Arabia,” said Paul. “One of the reasons they attacked us, is we propped up this Sharia government and the fundamentalists hated us for it.”

Oldefarte| 8.30.11 @ 2:13PM

I agree only partially with Paul, in that these religious/Muslim fanatics will not stop attacking non-Muslims if the intervention element was removed. Theirs is a holy war against all non-believers of that radical religion. Each/every Muslim mosque is a hotbed of their religious indoctrination, you can bank on that; and every one inside this country should be investigated and shut down if necessary!!!!!!!

Clint| 8.30.11 @ 4:12PM

Claire Solt PhD| 8.30.11 @ 9:30AM

Job creation is a relative, not absolute measure. For example, Clinton put so much emphasis on it that the unemployment rate went to 2% where I was hiring. That may sound wonderful, but it meant I could not find a secretary to save my life and most applicants were felons. Job creation was not, therefore, even an issue in the 2000 election or Bush admin, mostly because so many jobs were created io the 90's. That said, the elitists in Democratic [pundrity object that Texas jobs are 40% low paying. Duh, dopes, that is who is employed, the unskilled dropouts and grads of those nasty inner city schoools democrats run. Dems are not for the little guy, anymore, if they ever were.

Clinton| 8.30.11 @ 9:59AM

Texas has done what most of other states -- notably the blue coastal ones -- have failed to do: create jobs. Over the past decade Texas has created 2.1 million jobs -- while New York, California, Massachusetts and Obama’s Illinois have all lost jobs.

Its relative performance since 2009 has been even more stellar, producing nearly 40% of all new jobs in the U.S. Its unemployment rate stands at 8.2, well below the national average of 9.1 -- an outstanding feat given the fact that the state grew 20%, twice the national average, over the decade. Texas is creating jobs for a growing workforce, while other states like New York or Massachusetts struggle to keep up with stagnant or even declining ones.

According to research conducted by the Praxis Strategy group, Texas has boosted mid-skill jobs -- those that require two years or more of post-secondary education -- by 16% in the past decade, That's the third-highest rate in the nation (after much smaller Wyoming and Utah) and three times the national average. In contrast, New York has grown such positions by less than 5%, while California and Massachusetts have expanded them by less than 2%. Illinois, President Barack Obama's home turf, was among the few states to actually lose mid-skill jobs.

This pattern also applies to the high-tech and science-based industries. Over the past decade Texas' number of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math-related) jobs has surged by 11%, one of the fastest rates among the states and four times the national average. California, Massachusetts and Illinois all lost positions in these fields.

Another reason people go to Texas is their wages get them more there than in the big blue metros. For example, houses in Dallas, Austin or Houston cost three times the median income in these areas -- or less. That ratio is twice as high, or higher, in places like New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles.

To be sure, Texas has benefited from higher energy prices, as Perry's detractors point out. According to an analysis by the EMSI economic forecasting group, the energy sector jumped from over 230,000 jobs in 2001 to just under 490,000 in 2011. That's roughly 10% of all the state's overall job gains. This parallels job growth in other states that have experienced surges in energy-related employment -- such as North Dakota and Wyoming.

But some of this has to do with making your own "luck." Energy-rich California has all but declared war on its fossil fuel industry, once one of the nation's most important. Instead, the state has placed lavish bets on renewable fuel and the much ballyhooed notion that "green jobs" could provide a massive base for new employment -- something even the green-friendly New York Times has called "a pipe dream." In fact, employment in this field has actually started to tick down, and the prospect of ever higher energy prices associated with "clean" fuels could prove another nail in California's economic coffin.

While detractors will do their best to say Texas has not benefited under the leadership of Rick Perry and even imply a Democrat like Bill White, who Perry crushed in their gubernatorial matchup, would be just as effective or more effective is laughable. Where Democrats govern the states are in crisis and decline. Where Republicans govern the states are generally booming or at least doing better than their Democrat counterparts. Leadership can be heavy handed and self-aggrandizing like Obama and other Democrats or light and supportive of growth and success like Perry. The proof that the Perry model works is self-evident in the reality of Texas’ success.

Don’t Mess w/ Texas or you’ll get treated ugly.

So stuff a sock in it with all the Perry hate and Romney rebukes....whoever wins a civilized debate and primary season MUST enjoy the complete support of the right...even if you have differences with Him. Where else are you gonna go? So if you kids don't stop bickerin', i'm gonna pull this car over and give you BOTH something to cry about.....Oh...sorry, started channeling my dad there for a minute. But the point remains.....we must all hang together on this, or Obama will hang the economy permanently....

Boar Hunter| 8.30.11 @ 12:42PM

The solution is not limited to electing a (conservative) Republican. That's only the beginning. Whatever his end-game may be, Obama is destroying America. While using the federal government to stifle and kill the business model and profitability of every viable industry in America, Obama tout's the merit of "investing" more of our money in "shovel ready jobs," fictitious "green jobs" or a new department of job creation.

If his department of jobs fails, Obama will establish a new oversight agency, staffed by well trained attorneys, who will investigate why, after spending 20 million dollars, the department of job creation only created 10 new jobs. If these idiots spent every dollar possessed by every America outside those in the flea and locust class to fund their ever increasing departments of redundant lunacy, they would lament how the greed of the wealthy stifled their nobel efforts.

Our problem is that we have been so preoccupied with the problem of Obama, the real problem has gone unaddressed. In addition to a population sufficient enough both in numbers and stupidity to place Obama in office, imagine how many global warming tree humpers and other liberal true believers the liberals have hired to fill non-elected and thereby "protected" civil servant positions over the last several years.

The real battle will begin after we elect a candidate with real conservative values. Their political will to cut funding and staffing for nannie state entitlement programs must be vigorously supported, because we all know what kind of apoplectic fit the liberals in the media and both sides of the political aisle are going to have. We cannot therefore, afford another RINO, anywhere, in political office. As evidenced by the increase in "racist," "terrorist," "religious fanatic" name calling, liberals know Obama is a one term president. If we let liberals from either political party dictate who is electable because of their appeal to, "moderates and independents," then our demise is imminent and we have only ourselves to blame.

Oldefarte| 8.30.11 @ 2:09PM

Absolutely correct!!!!!!

Margie| 8.30.11 @ 2:55PM

Wow. Great post, Boar Hunter.
Especially the "global warming tree humpers and other liberal true believers.."

Most importantly though, as you said, whether it's the Libs in the media or in the Democrat party spouting off about our candidates (oh, wait. they're actually one and the same anyway!)~ we need to be like Ronald Reagan: Ignore them!!

Jeamar37| 8.30.11 @ 9:40AM

Reluctantly I repeat myself: Romney's Mormonism will eventually be his big problem. People in the SW have no idea how anti-Mormon some Evangelicals are and even some mainstream denominations have pastors still teaching Mormonism is a cult. Most people from the East and a great many from the Midwest have never known a Mormon but have heard many scurrilous
rumors about them. The Republic nomination is still in flux but unless the GOP is very careful Obamanation will win again. He has an established percentage of people who will automatically vote for him regardless of his abysmal performance in office.

VBMax| 8.30.11 @ 11:55AM

So Mormonism is worse than BlackMuslimJeremiahWrightism?

Margie| 8.30.11 @ 2:23PM

It is indeed a cult and it is right for Christians to say so, but that shouldn't stop people from voting for him IF he becomes the nominee.

I get your point though. Many will hold to their silly fears instead and will either not vote, or write in a name on the ballot.

If they would just look at the reality that is Obama the destroyer, their better sense should prevail, and they ought to see a vote for the Republican nominee is a much better choice than allowing their precious vote to go to another four years of an unrepentant Socialist.

Romney doesn't belong to the murderous cult of Islam, after all. And I doubt he would try and legalize bigamy since the cult he belongs to has now repented of that doctrine. At least that's what I've read if I remember correctly.

Say, what's better~ a President who is for "Gay Marriage" and every other form of immorality~ including stealing from the taxpayers, destroying our free market enterprise, and abortion?

Or Romney, dumb beliefs and all?

Margie| 8.30.11 @ 2:27PM

And that was NOT an endorsement for the man. I was speaking to the poster's point.

I am for any of the other candidates (other than Ron Paul least of all), and Romney is my second to last worst choice.

I love Hermain Cain. But right now Rick Perry seems to be the strongest, and I suspect he'll win the nomination.
God's will be done.

Jeamar37| 8.30.11 @ 4:47PM

Margie I totally agree with you on this post.

Margie| 8.30.11 @ 4:53PM

Thank you for saying so, and I'm glad you agree, Jeamar37.

Von Mises Jr.| 8.30.11 @ 9:45AM

Romney, like Huntsman whom received no traction, is an establishment, big government politician.
Perry is a more electable libertarian, free market capitalist candidate that has risen on the same tide as Ron Paul and Michelle Bachmann. They are anti-establishment, small government advocates. And they have the courage to state it clearly in the face of the MSM socialist establishment.
This is why Perry is rising, and Romney lasted only until a small government, electable candidate made his appearance. Only those that refuse to accept that the average voter is no more impressed with the RINO's than with the liberal progressives (better labeled as socialist) are Romney "bitter clingers."

Casey Abell| 8.30.11 @ 10:09AM

"Only a candidate with the support of rank-and-file Republicans, including Tea Partiers, and a clear record of success on jobs and health care will be able to survive and overcome this strategy."

Both Perry and Romney have the GOP vote locked. Every poll shows Obama getting next-to-zilch from Repub voters against either guy. Mitt and Rick would both have the support of "rank-and-file Republicans" against Barry.

So Catron's article comes down to an ideological broadside on two issues: health care and job creation. The second is far, far more important to the indies who will decide the election. Will Perry's job-creation record in Texas impress them?

Maybe and maybe not. The question is whether Perry accumulates enough baggage to discourage indies from voting for him. The GOP debates should tell a lot on whether Perry has enough appeal to the center to beat Obama. Right now he matches up pretty well against Barry among indies. But he hasn't been tested in any debates against the other challengers.

If this sounds noncommital to you, you're right. I've voted for Perry in all his statewide races in Texas, and I've generally been happy with the job he's done. But I'm not sure how he'll come across in less-than-blood-red states. That's why I'll be watching the GOP debates closely.

irish19| 8.30.11 @ 11:42AM

This is the kind of thing we need to hear from the kind of people who know-Texans who know Perry.

kate| 9.1.11 @ 12:56AM

I am hopeful.

kate| 9.1.11 @ 1:04AM

I hope that Perry rips the left without being a hotdog..
Imagine truthfulness (brutal) without silliness or ego.
No PC.
Plain speaking is what I yearn for.
There is plenty to say and do.
In the end character and passion will be what we are looking for.
If Perry has emotional or selfish interests, then I shall abandon him.
I wish someone would stand and represent the American people.

talkradio55| 8.30.11 @ 10:09AM

The field for 2012 is far superior than we had for 2008. The "most conservative" candidate of 2008 is now the second most liberal. We do not have to settle for Romney or Perry just because the pundits tell us this. We have real choices this time around and we need to exercise them. Perry is far superior to Romney on jobs and healthcare, and whatever he believed as a Democrat was not changed for the purposes of running for president.

This election will come down to jobs, but we also have to make it about the proper role for the federal government. The 10th Amendment has to be a part of the debate and the moral arguments for federalism must be made by whoever is nominated. The nominee must have a list of agencies that need to be eliminated. Only then, can America be the "shining city on a hill."

davelnaf| 8.30.11 @ 10:20AM

Most Republicans prefer Perry because they instinctively understand that he can beat Obama hands down. They also see him as being capable of restoring some dignity to the office in the same way that Reagan did after the Carter years. And they are at best diffident about Romney’s chances of doing the same. In particular it still stings them to recall how McCain pretty much bulldozed his way pass a lackluster Romney in the primaries.

POTUS will have some advantages next year, but nothing similar to what he had back in ’08. Voters just want to deprive him of another Republican self-inflicted wound.

realist431| 8.30.11 @ 10:38AM

Romney will have the same issue that McCain in going after Obama. McCain couldn't attack Obama's possition on many of the issues because McCain had supported those issues in the past. This will be Romney's problem too. He can't attack Obamacare because of Romneycare. He can't attack Obama on jobs because of his poor performance as governer of Mass.

Dick Nome| 8.30.11 @ 10:47AM

McQueeg was a "Moderate" who would not go after Obama. He ran an inept but "respectable" campaign to attract the 'moderates' and the "independents" (whoever they are supposed to be). He was the only one who could beat Hillary. WOrked out great didn't it. He was an establishmnet weenie. No more RINO establisnhment weenies this next time.

paul wright| 8.30.11 @ 10:47AM

Look folks, I will be voting for Perry if Palin doesn't get in but the sad fact is I will vote for any republican who gets the nomination because ANY republican will be better than the alternative of 4 more years of the most pathetic president we have ever had. 4 more years of barry will kill this country.....we have to get him out of the white house at all costs 2012

Michael Tomlinson| 8.30.11 @ 11:29AM

Paul:
I agree I'll being voting for any real Republican before standing by and doing nothing. I want vote for the RINO Paul, because he's really no better than Obama (addicted to big spending despite his words and a foreign policy MoveOn.org and George Soros would love).

Oldefarte| 8.30.11 @ 2:07PM

I agree MT, but please, ANYONE is better than Obama [even Paul]!!!!!

Margie| 8.30.11 @ 2:34PM

Hi Oldefarte,

I suppose I will have to pull the lever for RP if he ever became the nominee, but I know he cannot.

IF he did, all of the reasons why I ever had to pull the lever for the Republican nominee would come into question for the first time~ namely, that there would be a Republican administration.

Knowing the types of people that RPaul would have in his admin. would turn my stomach~ and he probably wouldn't have an issue with choosing Democrats like Dennis Kucinich for posts like secretary of Defense. (He votes along with Kucinch concerning defunding the military).

Ugh. Imagine it!!

Mick Hawk| 8.30.11 @ 10:49AM

Wow , the Rube Paul kooks are out in force again. They have to attack all the opposition till their icon is the only one left. You Paulbots are Crackpots, all of them.

Jack in Wi.| 8.30.11 @ 11:01AM

Ron Paul has been right on the issues for decades and predicted all that we are going through. He is setting the agenda for the whole debate. They are all trying to sound at least a little like him Yet all you can come up with is a bunch of name calling and nonsense. I don't think it is going to work this time. The countries problems are too great for dimwits like Perry, Romney or Bachman, who are just tools in the hands of their handlers.

Gateway Pundit| 8.30.11 @ 11:17AM

This makes me sick. Ron Paul again blames the US for the 9-11 Al-Qaeda massacre.

The Des Moines Register reported, via Free Republic:

Two weeks away from the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, presidential candidate and Texas Rep.

Clint| 8.30.11 @ 4:22PM

Boar Hunter| 8.30.11 @ 12:53PM

It's not "going to work this time"...really? It worked last time and the time before that, cause Ron Paul is a nut. I liked some of his "stated" policies when I learned about him years and years ago. Oh!, but then I found out he was an unelectable nut and I quit supporting him.

Oldefarte| 8.30.11 @ 2:02PM

Jack in Wi.| 8.30.11 @ 5:21PM

Dimwit Perry and is yelling about the Fed and making a fool out of himself. He knows nothing of the problems of this country. They are all yelling and say how they will follow the Constitution in everything. They all talk about a lower debt. The polls all show huge support for Ron Paul,'s ideas. 75% of people want the Fed audited. 60% want all the troops home in a year or less. 75% want all foreign aid stopped to everyone icluding Israel. Even Chris Wallace said that Ron Paul was setting the agenda. Everyone knows it but you Margie. Ron Paul is and has been right for decades period. He is the most intelligent and honest man to run for President in my lifetime.

Margie| 8.30.11 @ 6:05PM

"Everyone knows it but you, Margie."

Hmm, where have I heard that before? LOL.

I guess you haven't been reading the posts here. No one buys what you are saying about Ron Paul.

The reason the candidates are speaking about the Constitution is because they're conservatives, not because Ron Paul pretends to be one.

Margie| 8.30.11 @ 6:06PM

p.s. Ron Paul is the media's fave.

Boar Hunter| 8.30.11 @ 6:43PM

I'm sure Ron Paul will continue to be right on many subjects, but he will never hear anyone say, "That's correct Mr. President."

Either way, Romney should just keep spending his money on ads attacking the President. Especially in early primary states Iowa New Hampshire Florida Nevada Michigan Wisconsin Minnesota Ohio Missouri Colorado Virginia.

Peggy Noonan? Oh, you mean, the genius that wrote the article, "Party of One" in The WSJ? You mean that Peggy? I do not have enough explicatives to describe this fraud. Mike Hawk| 8.30.11 @ 4:49PM

No to Marco Rubio. Historically and as a norm, Veeps and Senators do not get elected President (only in exceptional cases). VP is the end of the line of a political career. I would not sacrifice Rubio for political expediency. We need him as Senate Majority Leader more than anything else. Don't kill him politically by parking him in the Veep slot.

irish19| 8.30.11 @ 8:34PM

Interesting take on the subject. Assuming you are correct about it being the end of the line, then you are right in that Rubio should stay right where he is for now.
John Bolton, on the other hand.........

PJ| 8.30.11 @ 2:01PM

I think Perry has a better chance at beating Obama than Mitt. Neither 1 of them is my perfect candidate, but then again there isn't 1 out there as of now.

If I had to give advice to Rick Perry, I would tell him to tone down his jokesy-homesy rhetoric. That bit about his wife's ironing & secession wisecracks may play well in Texas but not in the rest of America esp in NE & the Mid-Atlantic states. He still needs some parts of those specific regions to win.

I personally was a little shocked at both comments but quickly recovered because I knew it was said in jest to make a point. I personally looked further into it. How many average Americans would?

Butch| 8.30.11 @ 4:20PM

Well, you're sure not P. J. O'Rourke, are you? Really? Shocked? Even just a little? If those northeasterners are as you describe, then just write them off, anyway. Sounds like they will vote for whomever the Ivy League serves up. We've done so well with that over the past 50 years, haven't we?

PJ| 8.30.11 @ 5:46PM

Yes, I was a little shocked that he would make fun of his wife in front of strangers! Maybe Texans understood what he said immediately. But I didn't & had to look further into it.

There are plenty of conservatives & moderates in the Mid-Atlantic & NE States. Perry can win quite a few over if he toned down, not eliminate, his 1 liners w/out changing his persona or MO.

This is a presidential campaign. He obviously has the credentials to be president. He has to now sound like one. This is not just for Texas but for the rest of the country.

So stop being parochial & show a little bit of intelligence, Butchy.

Butch| 8.30.11 @ 7:45PM

If he can't win over a conservative, then they're not conservatives, are they? I am an "unintelligent" college professor in a demanding discipline, PJ. I was making a little light fun of your parochialism, but I don't want to make an enemy of you--it sounds like we're on the same side. We're not as PC in the rest of the country as you folks in the northeast and west coast.

I haven't been called "Butchie" (you misspelled it) since Mom died. Thanks.

Oldefarte| 8.30.11 @ 2:01PM

Excellent article and true! A prime argument for Perry is [as stated] Texas' legislating of tort reform. Many of the previously physicians abondoning the state due to excessive medical malpractice litigation awards have now returned, and the state's health insurance etc premiums have been reduced accordingly. Perry's staff need to emphasize same as a rebuttal to Romney's enactment of Massachusetts' health care mandated coverage!!!!!

David| 8.30.11 @ 2:29PM

Hey Dave Williams, if people believe that God created the universe and our wonderful bodies, it is not so hard to believe that He made a donkey talk, or that a big fish swallowed Jonah, or that a snake convinced Eve to eat the apple. And if you actually read the dimensions that God gave to Noah to build the ark, you will know that it is ordinary boat. On top of that, my understanding is that people have built scale models of it and it is impossible to tip.

Glenn Koonse | 8.30.11 @ 2:45PM

I think Perry can also bring a respect for , by,from the VETS here in America as well as the use for our Military (not as meals on wheels-but protectors). Then there are jobs. Then there is a rejection of CARE PC baloney. Then there too is that if SCOTUS appointments come up, Perry surely will appoint a Center-Right jurist. Bama or any Dem , will not. And frankly, I am not sure Romney would appoint , say a Justice Thomas or Scalia. Which we need more of! Then there is tort reform. Also, some border solutions that no one seems to prompt.

Sirbourbon| 8.30.11 @ 2:53PM

“If Karl Rove hadn’t been my consultant, I would not have been agriculture commissioner today,” Perry told the Dallas Morning News in 1994, adding: “My brain is like a chicken pot pie. His is like a refrigerator that is all very organized — pickles here, salad there.”

If you want an all consumming politician in the form of a Obama, Clinton or Bush then Perry is your person. If however you are looking for a man who has a thorough understanding of constitutional principles and has actually read John Locke's Second Treatise on Government, forget "Governor good hair."

Governor good hair is a virtual clone of Bush and will embrace the the neo-con gospel like he has glummed onto Kissinger's book on Red China which is to follow the yellow brick road to more foreign intervention until the day America is up for sale due to a polci of war and welfare.

Perry's Apologist Stooge Flunkies Are Afraid Of The Tea Party.

"They're particularly skeptical about Perry's record on immigration, an issue that resonates with the Granite State's tea party movement.

As governor, Perry signed a law making Texas the first state to offer in-state tuition to illegal immigrants, and he blasted a proposed border fence as "idiocy." Texas tea party groups sent Perry an open letter this year expressing disappointment over his failure to get a bill passed that would have outlawed "sanctuary cities," municipalities that protect illegal immigrants.

Texas governors, including Perry and his predecessor, George W. Bush, walk a fine line when it comes to immigration. The state's powerful business lobby, which is reliably Republican, back many immigration rights laws and the state population is more than one-third Hispanic. Landowners along the Texas-Mexico border had complained about the border fence interfering with ranching.

Perry also said that Arizona's controversial immigration law "would not be the right direction for Texas," although he would later support a friend-of-the-court brief defending Arizona's right to pass its own laws in accordance with the 10th Amendment.

"That's a pretty big knock against him," said Jerry DeLemus, chairman of the Granite State Patriots Liberty PAC, when notified of some of Perry's immigration policies."

Bachmann scored 10% and the rest of the field registered in single digits"

Oldefarte| 8.31.11 @ 3:57PM

What this Gallup poll also indicates is that a large majority of Paul's support is coming from the age group 18-29 year-olds. What that tells you is that many of his supporters are the SNOT-NOSED TWERPS THAT ALSO FAVOR OBAMA. No doubt, the SNOT-NOSERS of the Democratic variety support Obama, whereas those of the Republican variety support Paul. Once again that old philosopher Gump once declared, STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES, and obviously he was referring to Obama's and Paul's supporters!!!!

Margie Reminds Me Of A Joisey White Trash Bigot, Bastardizing Religion.

Oh !
That's Right, Margie Is & Does.

Margie| 8.30.11 @ 6:11PM

Religion is a bastard, Clint.
It spawns people who think like you.
God isn't Religion, in fact He hates it.
If you read the Bible instead of believing what the Papists tell you, you'd know that.

"Jesus said to him, "I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father, but by Me." Jn. 14:6.

Boar Hunter| 8.30.11 @ 7:11PM

Margie, your compassion and patience is endearing. You my friend are a fine herder of sheep, but Clint's mind is harder than the head of a ram and the path you would lead him to is narrow and hard to find.

Like you, I have accepted and have faith in what many cannot and never will. It should sadden me that the majority of people will never see heaven, but as I get older I find myself feeling more like Noah with his, but I don't want to save them attitude. Maybe God will change my heart or mind someday, but I still struggle with the love your enemy thing.

Perhaps a verse to help?

Boar Hunter| 8.30.11 @ 7:15PM

PS: The only one that pops into my mind pertains to much weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Margie| 8.30.11 @ 8:40PM

Boar Hunter,

How about this:

"But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God; wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
And convince some, who doubt; save some, by snatching them out of the fire; on some have mercy with fear, hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
Now to Him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing, to the only God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. Amen." Jude 1:20-25.

There's an exhortation, warning, & encouragement, all in one.
If you do the first four things in those verses, you'll be able to do the rest, by the Grace of God.
And notice just who the Saviour is, Jesus.
Not Religion, but the Man, Christ Jesus.

Did I help you?

Boar Hunter| 8.31.11 @ 2:06AM

I strangely do not believe I have ever read that before and I considered myself somewhat knowledgable on the subject. Good one Margie!

Margie| 8.31.11 @ 1:52PM

My brother Boar Hunter,

Well then, now you have just discovered what is most likely the gist of your problem! Get into reading His Words every day.

Your "problem" most likely isn't a problem~ it's Satan trying to talk you into a lie. It sounds to me like the accuser of the brethren is trying to convince you that you're hard-hearted. Remember what he does is not uncommon. Once, when I was much younger in Christ, I bought that same deception, and near gave up inside, believing there was no hope for me. Then I prayed and asked God to do whatever it took to change me. Soon after, I had a serious accident at my job, and both of my thumbs were crushed. (They're ok, just can't bend them all the way anymore).

When that happened, God woke me up to the reality that I had believed a lie from Satan himself, and almost chose to fall away from Jesus. When I was in the emergency room, I was in excruciating pain. My boss was with me and the room was full, yet I quietly bowed my head in prayer. I asked Jesus to please take away the pain. (I had to wait quite awhile). I began thanking Him for the opportunity to fellowship with Him in His suffering.. though in such a minute way, and He filled me with such joy, and He did take away the pain. At one point I looked up and my boss quickly told me to "please~keep doing what you're doing!" Meaning, pray.

He saw that "it was working." When they called my name I lifted up my head and I felt my face beam with joy. The doctors couldn't understand! I spent many days afterwards in a lot of pain and in a lot of prayer, and have never since then experienced such a closeness with Jesus Himself.

I now know that to believe that there is no hope, not only for me, but for anyone who will decide to trust in Him is a lie from Satan himself.

I know from personal experience, not only from that time, but when I first gave my like to Him, and the same joy He filled me with~ that all His promises really ARE true.

Boar Hunter~ do not fall prey to a lie from Satan himself that you are hard hearted or that you do not care for the lost. If you have Christ in you~ then you care, my brother.
You just need to let His Words fill your heart again.

Did you know that the Word of God has the power to change you? Remember that His Words are living and active.

And to wrap it all up, this is exactly what I mean by how Religion (the outward behaviors of a belief system) can't save us.

It is Jesus Christ Himself!

The candidate who can withstand the garbage, the maladaptive behavior, the anti-social Socialists lies, the MSM crap and see thru all of the fog that will be placed as a barrier --that candidate who has the best message and most able to debate Obama--that is to take the argument DIRECTLY
to him and be most effective in hammering home the LIES that the LEFT perpetrate. The candidate that people can identify with as a LEADER to get us out of this mess. That will be the deciding factors. And in addition to all that that candidate MUST be extremely activeland vigorous in counterattacking and knowing when to shut up. S/he must know when to let the great Obama hang himself with his own words. But effective advertising will help a lot and that means mullah!!!!!!!!!!!.

Thank you for this article! Yes you see the reality. There are two major problems first and foremost--Obama and yes, we will vote for anyone but Obama. But the second problem is the "former Bush aides, and sundry other Republican luminaries ". These are people who are 1) too far away from reality to understand and see the people on the ground, like the tea party and 2) continue to manipulate the Republicans and the American people. Noonan--please get over it. Reagan, (unfortunately) is not president. Rove, get over it Bush who you helped to make AND destroyed is not President. This also includes the neocons--Bill Kristol and Fred Barnes--who are, unfortunately, still influential with Boehner and some of the Republicans. We need to get the neocons and the elite beltway out of the Republican primary. Out of the way.

Sheryl| 8.30.11 @ 9:42PM

The Tea Party is losing popularity fast so I don't know how well that will help Perry.
This article also fails to mention that Perry took the dreaded Obama Stimulus Money in 2009.
Plus Texas' has the highest uninsured (and Perry just made huge cuts to Medicaid because of his budget deficit) Obama's going to say because states like Texas I had to enact a federal healthcare law.

He also has never lost an election.

Have fun with "Governor Good Hair". The late Molly Ivins coined it. When she finally found a job she could keep, bad-mouthing the Texas Lege, as she called it, she was pretty funny. The poor soul died of cancer, although it surprised some that she didn't choke to death on her own vitriol. She was Texas' answer to the venomous Maureen Dowd.

It is pathetic how people who dislike a candidate must fall back on the labels dreamed up by someone else. It must be because they have minds like a flatiron, incapable of original humor.

Romney can't match Perry's record, but Governor Gary Johnson can match it. Johnson has the best job-growth rating of all the candidates. Jobs under Johnson weren't government jobs, unlike Perry's jobs. Johnson balanced the budget, cut the state workforce by 10%, and left NM with a billion + surplus.

Perry is much like Bush. We don't need another pro-war candidate from Texas who thinks holding prayer circles is the way to run a government.

Johnson has 25 years of business experience building a 1 man handy man business into one of the largest businesses in NM.

Johnson is the only candidate with a positive favorable home state likability rating.

The establishment might not like Johnson which is why they are keeping him out of the debates but when it comes to beating Obama, then Johnson does much better against Obama than either Perry or Romney.

Secession has been a verboten issue in the United States since the end of the Civil War. Any group who've brought it up have been targeted by press and government as 'militant fringe groups" All of a sudden in 2009, we're seeing it endorsed by career politicians in several states simultaneously, and the media is giving them good press.

Last week, Rick Perry, Texas Governor since George W. Bush's departure in 2000, raised secession of Texas from the Federal Union at a Ron Paul type 'Tea Party" to protest Federal spending and the tax burden on the little guy.

Clearly the Illuminati intend to harness and divert popular discontent to advance their own secret agenda, I.e. The melding of the USA into their world government. Many people think the tea party movement in general exhibits a suspicious amount of organization and media acceptance. (Contrast Fox TV's coverage of this with "9-11 Truth.")

Perry later told the Star-Telegram that he "never specifically said that Texas should consider trying to secede." Technically he's correct. He got cheers telling the Tea Party rabble that the Republic of Texas legislature left a provision in the 1845 agreement to cede with the US Federal government.

But Perry is no populist. In May 2007, Dallas Morning News reported, "Gov. Rick Perry is flying to Istanbul, Turkey, today to speak at the super-secret Bilderberg Conference, a meeting of about 130 international leaders in business, media and politics." All the Governor's press secretary had to say was, "He's looking forward to learning the secret handshake." And, "It's their conference, and I suppose they can run it anyway they want." Perry's expenses were officially paid by the PAC group 'Texans for Rick Perry'.

Although he's never cared what the voters want, Perry intends to run for an unprecedented third term for Governor in 2010.

Perry's gubernatorial resume includes supporting 'Open Borders'; proponent of the $145 billion+ Trans-Texas (NAFTA) Highway to the dismay and anger of central Texas residents who have never been consulted on whether they want or need it. (Thousands of square miles of land has been seized by the State of Texas under eminent domain for this project in Central Texas from the Mexican border just west of San Antonio, Austin, and and Dallas and North Texas.) Perry helped set it up so the project is being built by the Spanish contractor Cinta, and paid for by new toll highways all over the State.

Perry further alienated Texas parents and Legislators by attempting to override a "No" decision on mandatory vaccination of 11-year-old girls with an vaccine for an STD, venereal & warts (the $350 a pop "slut shot.") Perry invoked Executive Order in Feb 2007, but families filed class action suit and many financial connections between Perry and big pharma corporation Merck came out. Perry backed down but a new bill has been introduced that will make Gardasil mandatory "as an admission requirement for all primary and secondary schools."

THE REAL SECESSIONISTS

The real secessionist movement leaders were arrested, one killed in 1997. Old school Texans will remember there was a genuine grass roots secessionist movement during the 70's through the 90's. They called themselves the Republic of Texas. During the 80's one couldn't miss seeing thousands of 'SECEDE!' bumper stickers in Houston and Austin traffic. Few people took the Secessionists seriously, but the Federal and Texas governments did. Secessionist movement leaders were hunted down and arrested or killed in West Texas in 1997.

The story made the New York Times and CNN, referring to them as 'militant secession group' and 'fringe group'. The group, led by Richard McLaren, stated historical fact that the original Republic of Texas legislature had never ratified Texas becoming a territory or State of the United States. The Republic of Texas was chartered as a sovereign nation recognized by the United States government at the time.

All the Republic of Texas members had been calling for was an official state wide public referendum so citizens could decide whether they wanted to remain under Federal government or reclaim Republic status.

One secessionist was killed in the Davis Mountains by Texas State Police helicopter snipers. No other witnesses. How is it that Governor Rick Perry is getting full media support using the same arguments as did a 'militant fringe group' ?

RiverKing| 9.1.11 @ 5:01PM

The difference between supporting Romney and Perry for most of us associated with the Tea Party is that we would grudgingly vote for Romney in the general election but will work enthusiastically for Perry.

wodiejc - whoever. You - and others - praise Palin to the skies. What are the specifics? Governor of a big state with sparse population. And for not very long, at that. Quit her job because her political enemies were suing her into the poorhouse. Saw she could turn her 15 minutes of fame into a few years and a lot more money with speaking engagements and reality shows. Remove the visuals of Sarah's "perkiness". Remove, for the moment, the insane adulation of the crowd. And read a transcript of what she says. Sound bites, ad nauseam. Pretty thin gruel.

Years ago we had Debbie Reynolds in the movie, The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Sarah is modeled on that and she comes in a poor second.

So paranoid, when a sleazy hack writer camped next door to her she built a big fence around her property. Always whining, "Leave my children alone." Being a "Mama Grizzly"is distracting from being President. Having a royal snit because she was accused of accepting a decent wardrobe when when she was McCain's running mate.... these are the less attractive traits of the insecurity of being a woman. You can get this woman off message in a twinkling.

If Perry is dumb enough to ask her to be is running mate, his goose is cooked. She has to be "the bride at every wedding; the corpse at every wake. . ."
