Yet we know he was not happy with the current crop of candidates.
WASHINGTON — Alas we lost a most desirable candidate for the White House this week, one that is not charismatic, did not write (or have someone else write) his memoir, has displayed no jump shot in public, and did not leave important documents on his desk while gallivanting around the country in the campaign mode and heading for vacation on Martha’s Vineyard. In the first instance I am talking about Congressman Paul Ryan. In the second I am talking about President you-know-who. Since the day he was inaugurated he has been campaigning for his second term, all the while expressing ambivalence about wanting a second term. That is nonsense. He is living rent-free and has that big airplane to fly about the country in.
Ryan has now declared that he is inalterably not seeking the Republican nomination. He did it despite pressure from Karl Rove and Governor Mitch Daniels and after a long hike on the countryside with Bill Bennett, the corpulent ex-Reagan cabinet official. On second thought, the hike could not have been that long. The last time I saw Bennett, a long hike would have been life-threatening.
Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, took his name out of the race with characteristic seriousness. “I sincerely appreciate the support from those eager to chart a brighter future for the next generation,” he declared. “While humbled by the encouragement, I have not changed my mind, and therefore I am not seeing our party’s nomination for President.” There was not much charisma here. He is not running.
Yet, why did he say after the latest Republican debate that, “I just have yet to see a strong and principled articulation of the kind of limited government, opportunity-society path that we would provide as an alternative to the Obama cradle-to-grave welfare state”? I thought then he was going to run. Does he have someone else in mind?
He already has an alternative budget to campaign against Obama with whenever Obama presents a budget. It passed the house. It strikes at the heart of our current budgetary impasse, taking on entitlements and the huge cancer that Obama introduced into our polity against the public’s wishes, Obamacare. Ryan is the natural opponent of Obama. He has the demonstrated intellectual leadership that would make him a powerful force on the campaign trail, to say nothing of in debate.
Moreover he has the economic message that a potent constituency out there wants to hear, the independents. In 2010 the independent vote swarmed to Republicans. Today the independents show every sign of sticking with the Republicans for years to come, because they are essentially concerned about pocket-book issues and it is clear that Democrats are not. Democrats are advocates of high taxes, regulations, and the nanny state. The independent vote has demonstrated that it is pro-growth. The independents are Ryan independents.
They do not care if a president wrote a lovely memoir or did not write it. They do not care about his jump shot. They are coming to my opinion on charisma. It is entertaining, but in these times we need something beyond entertainment. We need policies that will get American growing again.
That brings us to those documents that Obama left sitting on his desk. During his campaign swing through the Midwest last week he complained repeatedly that there were three free-trade agreements with Korea, Colombia, and Panama pending in Congress. Sending them on to the President, the Wall Street Journal reports Obama as saying, Congress “could do right now,” save for the congressional obduracy. And then the Journal reports Congress cannot pass the agreements, because they are “still sitting on the President’s desk.” Someone overlooked them, but the Journal says they are there. I would like to know how this little mishap gets worked out.
In the meantime, if Ryan has “yet to see a strong and principled articulation of the kind of limited government, opportunity-society path that we would provide as an alternative to the Obama cradle-to grave welfare state,” does he have anyone else in mind. It is getting late.

Just pure speculation but maybe Ryan felt used by the establishment of the Republinsky Partiya and decided he did not want to bother. Maybe having some big mouth, loud mouth angry representatives expressing what voters feel is not such a bad thing and attacked Socialism and Obama is a good thing. He was being manipulated as a wedge against the terrible Tea Party and he said " No thanks"
Jack in Wi.| 8.25.11 @ 3:02PM
Amen to that Martin: Rove is just trying to get back in the game and looking for anybody who will carry on Bush's horrible agenda. It is going to be hard to win on a policy of endless war, endless bailouts, and endless foreign aid to criminals and kleptocrats. Send the country clubbers and neocons a message they won't forget. Vote Ron Paul for Peace and Prosperity. He is the soldiers best friend.
jolizoom| 8.25.11 @ 3:44PM
Really? He voted against revised ROE that would allow soldiers to proactively defend themselves , and he is the soldier's best friend? Ok, I get it--he wants them out of the ME... but while they're there, he doesn't want them to be able to defend themselves?
Jack in Wi.| 8.25.11 @ 4:27PM
You may call them rules of engagement others might call them war crimes. Hitler's soldiers thought they could make it up as they went along and ignore the ancient and honorable rules of war. You don't get to just go and mow down people just on the suspicion, of whats in your mind .

Pigletrios| 8.26.11 @ 8:38AM
If the people who send our military to war would then allow them to conduct it they way it is supposed to be conducted - Get in, kick a**, take names and get out winning - this nonsense would have been over years ago. People playing politics with our military is what put blood on our hands - those young people committing suicide or having mental problems are the result of the namby pamby way we go about fighting wars today - they are spending too much time in a bad situation that wouldnt be bad if we let them do their jobs. Don't like it? Make sure you dont volunteer to do the job.

Jack, do you work at being a shithead or does it come naturally?
TURK| 8.25.11 @ 7:11AM
Carl Rove is recruiiting him?? Need we say more. Is this the carl rove that saw to it that a democrat got elected in Delaware last time we looked? The same carl rove who blocked Herman Cain from a senate seat in Geo in favor of some play ball white guy who screwed us first left chance he got? The same carl rove who created the disaster known as 'compassionate conservatism? If rove and daniels late the country club r choice, are unhappy with the current field of repub candidates---I'm very happy with it. (see latest poll)
Redstateboy| 8.25.11 @ 8:43AM
I agree with you 100% TURK... Rove is Rove's best friend - I don't trust him - not after he helped in torpedoing Christie O'Donnell's campaign.
I'd also add... we're get'n a Mit-full of Commentators whose heads are getting so big - they're beginning to believe they're King-Makers. Like: O'Reilly, Krauthammer and certainly Rove.
JimP| 8.25.11 @ 10:25AM
I'm on the same wave link, Turk. I assume that Ryan really does believe in an opportunity society and wants to dismantle the welfare state, so, why would Rove and the Bush crowd want a Reagan type candidate? Isn't Reaganomics "voodoo"? Didn't they have three terms as POTUS wherein they enacted/expanded various kinds of big government spending, regulations and new programs? On the surface it doesn't make any sense to me and I'm therefore suspicious. My gut reaction is that either Ryan isn't what he seems or the Rove/Bush crowd are up to something. Also, Ryan is what, the sixth 'candidate' they have backed this cycle? They appear to be desperately searching for an acolyte of their philosophy without success-so far.
TrueBlue| 8.25.11 @ 11:49AM
They see Ryan as someone that will benefit them personally, all there is to it. The fact he actually IS the right person for the job means nothing to them, I'd bet they expect they could have manipulated him to do what they want.
JimP| 8.25.11 @ 12:47PM

I doesn't matter who is elected if s/he doesn't get good legislation to sign into law. Legislation that rolls back the regulatory oppression, simplifies the tax code, and dramatically downsizes government.
It is Ryan's job to make sure that legislation is well-written and makes it to the next President's desk. Hopefully he will have a cooperative Congress and a Republican President in a year and a half.
Indy| 8.25.11 @ 9:52AM
Whoever is elected should be asking for legislation that rolls back exectutive branch powers. I have yet to hear a candidate say what his / her plan is to give up power and to formulate changes in legislative language so that it would be very difficult to expand power again by future presidents. The candidate who will get my vote must be willing to be a one term President and will put our Republic first. There are difficult decisions that must be made, who has the courage to put cards on the table and then play the hand?
George S| 8.25.11 @ 10:34AM
"Good legislation" will never happen unless there are at least 60 Republican senators. Democrats will filibuster anything that seeks to reverse their once in a lifetime accomplishments of the past two years.

Bingo! 60 is the magic number. 2/3 is an even better number so that congress can override a veto no matter what sort of pinhead politcian holds the presidency. Or course, we still need congressmen with the spine to make the necessary changes.

DaveD| 8.25.11 @ 9:35AM
Dave (same first name, but little else to recommend), disability payments are one of the most abused programs run by the U.S. Government. No one argues about helping the man who lost an arm in an industrial accident, but how about the 20-something clown who gets disability payments because he suffers from "Adult Baby Syndrome?" Something's got to give.
George S| 8.25.11 @ 10:22AM
Never say no one... I would argue that as long as there is a system in place to "help" the guy who lost an arm, it will soon be overrun by every other affliction you can think of except one: the inability to vote.

I was a disability evaluator for the State of Alabama for a few years. One of the things I did was to train my secretary (my wife) on what to look for. People would claim poor fine motor skills, for example (due to an accident that also gave them PTSD) and then light and smoke a cigarette.
On the other hand, I have had situations where people were sent to me for followup (at $100.00 an eval about 15 years ago) when they had permanent conditions that would never change (Charcot-Marie-Tooth, for example) and permanent disability. So, problems both ways.
Dave| 8.25.11 @ 9:41PM

Fascism: A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
Which party advocates a government top down economy with government deciding which businesses succeed of fail? Democrats best illustrated by the destruction of bankruptcy law and bondholders on behalf of the labor union members at GM and Chrysler. The so-called failed "green energy" initiatives. The corrupt bargain between Obama and GE. . .
Which party advocates censoring the press or restricting freedom of speech by a system of controls generally not as “politically correct speech?” Democrats advocating using the so-called “Fairness Doctrine” control or select what speech Americans would hear via mass communication tools. Democrats political civility, but consistently denigrates and belittles their opposition even going so far as discussing “killing” political opponents. It was Barack Obama himself in his best Hitlerian style who told his supporters to bring “guns and knives” into political discourse and ordered his followers to “get in people’s faces.” Democrats who use indoctrination of children in public schools to sing praises of Democrat’s “beloved leader” Barack Obama.
Which party is associated with a force that wears matching shirts (typically purple) to strong arm and physically intimidate and harm the opposition? Democrats.
The Democrat party is the neo-fascist party in the US and they prove daily by their actions.
Michael Tomlinson| 8.25.11 @ 10:32AM
Sorry about some of the mistatements this garbage from modern fascists "Democrats" gets my blood boiling. Especially when the call a decent policy wonk something so patently untrue.

You are aware, are you not, that the single largest cut to Medicare funding in the history of the program was made by....wait for it...Barack H. Obama?
So to follow your reasoning, Obamacare takes more than half a trillion dollars (you read that right, that's trillion, with a "T") from current Medicare recipients (who actually paid into the system for their entire careers) to fund the health insurance of deadbeats, while Congressman Ryan proposes NO CHANGES to Medicare for current recipients (as well as those who will become recipients in the next 10 years), and in your mind it is Ryan who is the fascist (incorrect use of the term notwithstanding...)?
Really, sport; you're embarrassing yourself.

Rasmussen Poll: Ron Paul tied with President Obama
Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul continues to make headway in a series of recently released polls.
A Rasmussen Poll released Wednesday shows the Texas Republican trailing President Obama by just one percent, the tightest margin to date.
Mr. Paul earns 38 percent of the vote to Mr. Obama’s 39 percent, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely U.S. Voters. Fourteen percent said they prefer another candidate, while eight percent remain undecided.
“The president and the maverick are running almost dead even in a hypothetical 2012 election matchup,” pollsters said. “But Paul still has a long haul among voters in his own party. He ran fourth last week in Rasmussen Reports’ most recent survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters with nine percent support,” they added.
The poll comes just one day after a Gallup poll found the Texas Republican just four percentage points behind President Obama. Republican governor Rick Perry, who announced his campaign earlier this month, led the Gallup poll, while former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann were closely behind.
Rasmusson pollsters noted Mr. Paul now receives more support than former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, who has yet to enter the 2012 race.
“Paul, popular with many in the Tea Party movement, runs better against the incumbent than another Tea Party favorite, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin,’ they note.
The poll follows a key showing for Mr. Paul in the Ames Republican Presidential Straw Poll, where the Texas congressman took a close second behind Ms. Bachmann."

Unfortunately (for you), these polls assume Dr. Paul is the republican nominee; that's a he'll of an assumption for a guy whose maximum level of support among republican voters is 13%.
So to summarize your position (again): a candidate who can't get the republican nomination will be the next republican president of the united states.
Brilliant analysis, sport. You keep clinging to that dream. In the meantime, here's a peek at reality: the good folks of America tend not to write checks to candidates who believe a nuclear Iran is not an existential threat to the US and it's allies. Gallup poll yesterday has Ron Paul in third place in the Republican race. The stats are Perry 29% Romney 17%. Paul 13 Bachman is at 10%. Perry has had all the media for 2 weeks and Paul has had none of it. Yet Paul is within easy striking distance of both Perry and Romny. The pretty and easily flustered Mrs. Bachman is on her way down and out. Romney is declining badly. The polls show that the voters by huge majorities favor Dr. Paul's plan to audit the Fed. They also approve by similar large majorities his plans to bring home all the troops now and end all foreign aid. Dr. Paul has huge army of committed supporters. They are behind him financially. He by far the best debater in the debates and runs circles around the rest of them. I can hadly wait to see Perry debate the Fed. Most of them are trying ot steal his ideas. He runs neck annd neck against Obama as do most of the other three. He runs by far best among independent voters, and democrats. Without these voters no Republican can be elected. I expect Sarah Palin tto endorse him as well. because if she runs she would have to become Rove's girl. therefore I give you the next President of the USA. The Real Doctor Of Democracy Ron Paul. The soldiers best friend.

The GOP establishment is not totally in-line with Supply Side economics. Those that make thier living or weath as Traders tend to like the way things are. Inflation and volatility are oppurtunities for short-selling and speculation. On the other hand, Main Street capitalists normally want smaller government intrusion (at all levels), blananced public ledgers, and low taxes. The rift exists between Wall St and Main St.
It is difficult to get a handle on Ryan. He is not quite as conservative as his handlers make him out; but, just the same he stuck his neck on last April when he presented the GOP's House budget.
GW| 8.25.11 @ 2:50PM
Any market conditions are ripe for speculation. The idea is to know more about the market than other traders, since derivatives trading (where most of it goes down) is a zero-sum game.
The reason many Wall St. banks love big government is because they privatize the gains and socialize the losses. Rent seeking--pure and simple. But ultimately the power rests in Washington. Bailouts, artificially low interest rates set by the Fed, and stimulus spending are not decided by Wall St unless Washington allows it to be.

Nowadays, many politicians -- Obama, Cain, and Palin come to mind -- seek the presidency with very little relevant experience on their resumes. By refusing to join their number, Paul Ryan inspires hope that someday, he'll be ready for the job.

I'm pleased that Paul Ryan has chosen to wait a few years to be President. For now, after the 2012 elections have brought in more conservatives to Congress, I'd REALLY like to see Paul Ryan as Speaker of the House. And Jim DeMint as Majority Leader in the Senate.
As for president, I'll vote for anything alive except King O.
PJ| 8.25.11 @ 1:43PM
I agree w/you. Ryan needs a few more yrs but more than just a House Rep. I would like to see him run for his state's US Senate seat or even governor (Although I think I like Walker.) & get more experience running in a larger region.
Unless I'm wrong, this country has yet to elect a president coming directly from the US House of Rep position.

I am disappointed that more people aren't considering Santorum for Prez or even VP. The guy has a wealth of experience and accomplishments, and is a great debater. Why is he so good? Because he knows what he believes in HIS CORE, knows why he believes it, and can clearly express it.
PJ| 8.25.11 @ 1:47PM

I would like to see him become a senator again or even a governor. Lots of work needs to be done in those 2 offices.

I believe Santorum remains a sleeper for all the reasons you mentioned. His main obstacle is his lack of name recognition mainly because of the female Tea Party candidates and (tease candidates).

Up until today, I was inclined to believe that he would be a one termer. He will be re-elected.
The reason? The establishment has decided that he will be re-elected. They are pushing (both punch and judy) for a third party in this next election. The Ron Paul, liberaltarians will act as spoilers and aid this effort either directly or indirectly.
If you disagree with this, please comment. I would like to know others thoughts about this. Please prove me wrong.
JP| 8.25.11 @ 2:25PM
It will be just like 1992. Here's what will happen:
Mitt will win the nomination (name recognition, money, and establishment support).
The grass roots tea-partiers and other rank and file conservatives will rebel.
Ron Paul will throw in his hat as an independent.
Obama will win the election with 42-43% of the popular vote. Mitt and Ron Paul will split the other 57%. Obama will take NY, CA, PA, MI, IL, VA, WI, OH and a few other states to arrive at 271 electoral votes.
However, the GOP will capture 12 of the 23 Democratic Senate seats up for play and end up with 58-42 majority; the GOP will also increase its House lead by a dozen or so seats. Mitch and Boehner will lose thier leadership positions.
Obama will win re-election, but he will not have anything close to a governing majority or coalition. Demint will take over the Senate leadership, Ryan will assume leadership of the House.
Drunken Sailor| 8.25.11 @ 3:29PM
So rather than the Republicans taking the Senate, increasing in the house and taking the Presidency you think Ron Paul will pull a Ross Perot and lose it for the Republicans? And that is supposed to be a good thing?
Looking for clarification.
JP| 8.25.11 @ 4:12PM
Nope, it is not a good thing. It is just my prediction. We've seen how easy it is for the GOP lawmakers to get worn down. The GOP needs the WH as much as it needs both Houses of Congress. Defeating President Obama is a must.
The key here isn't Ron Paul but Mitt. The RNC loves Mitt. However, we know the former govenor of Massachusetts will cause a mass defection of conservatives if he gets the nod. Obama wins either way when he should in fact lose.
Of course, in a three way race, there is the potential for Ron Paul to win by forming a firewall in the Deep South, Midwest and Rockies. Obama takes CA, NY, and IL but fails to win New England (which could go to Mitt). Paul wins everything else and squeeks by with a 1 or 2 vote electoral victory. Of course, Bachman could do the same thing. But Paul has the network of followers already in place.
Jack in Wi.| 8.25.11 @ 4:18PM
Ron Paul will be the nominee of the Republican Party. I fully expect the elites of the party to do the same thing they did to Goldwater and Reagan. That is. They will backbite, and in the case of Reagan run a formidable 3rd party. They don't care if Obama wins He is their puppet. I expect to see them mount a third party if Dr. Paul is the nominee. I expect Dr. Paul to sit out because of ballot access laws, if he is not the nominee. He will back a third Party unless the nominee promises to bring all the troops home. end the Fed, and end foreign aid. It has to be written in stone. No Republian can be elected without the support Dr. Paul has. Either get behind the man who has been right for decades or have Obama for 4 more years. We don't see any difference between a Bush Rove clone and Obama. It is better if the ship sinks on Obama's watch. It may be possible to salvage something.

Folks, We need to consider ((3)) criteria in our search for the GOP nominee. All three are of equal importance:
* Specific positions on the Big Issues
* Electability
* Once in office, how EFFECTIVE would he/she be?
There simply is no one out there who sufficiently passes all three criteria. This why a team approach may be the ticket. What we should look for is a combo package that would fill the need. That would be
Rubio/Barbour
A young charismatic senator who's ideology is aligned with most conservatives, libertarians, and independents. A serious threat to the liberal establishment. His lack of years in Washington is his only negative and that's why Haley Barbour would serve as the perfect mentor/vice president for the young Mr. Rubio.
Once in office, this team could push through much conservative legislation because of Barbour's prowess at finding and pulling the levers in Washington.
This would be a juggernaut that would be hard to stop. Heck, it could bring forth a new crop of blue dog democrats-turned republican. The likes we haven't seen since Reagan.
Think about it.
