The Left Has No Humanity

Liberals love to promote humanism. Then why aren’t they treating Tea Partiers like humans?

When one considers the casualness with which left-wing politicians and media figures use words like “terrorist,” “jihad” and “Wahhabis” to describe the Tea Party, one cannot help but wonder what shapes such attitudes in the first place.

In order to satisfy such curiosity, it is necessary to spend time among liberals, socialists, communists and self-described progressives. I realize this is not the way a lot of conservatives would want to spend their morning — much less their afternoon or evening. Yet when in a political conflict, especially one that is likely to shape the very future of this country, it is most helpful for conservatives to know our adversaries as well as we know ourselves.

This is what motivated me to wake far earlier than usual last Sunday morning and travel across the Charles River to the People’s Republic of Cambridge to attend a discussion about the Tea Party sponsored by the Ethical Society of Boston. The organization describes itself as “a non-theistic humanistic religious and educational fellowship inspired by the ideal that the supreme aim of human life is working to create a more humane society.” So of course when a woman named Mary said she was curious about the Tea Party, another woman replied to her, “I hope you’re not coming for a positive view.” Ah, so it was going to be that sort of discussion.

The discussion was facilitated by a bearded gentleman named Gaston. By his own admission he did not consider himself “a very good facilitator” and made it very clear he held the Tea Party in little esteem. But he promised to “stand back.” His earlier modesty notwithstanding, Gaston ensured all views were heard and even tried to find areas of common ground between “progressives” and Tea Partiers, albeit unsuccessfully.

Of course, a vast majority of the participants held the Tea Party in very little regard. A gentleman named Marvin described Tea Party activists as “irrational” and said their political positions “aren’t ideas but a string of words.” For good measure, he threw the Koch Brothers into the mix. A woman named Sheila chimed in and said that Tea Party activists weren’t so much irrational as they were “simplistic” because they didn’t take technological advancements such as the Internet into account (despite all evidence to the contrary). A man named Bill characterized the Tea Party as “white, right religious types.” Another man named John said the Tea Party members who had been elected to Congress were “dangerous persons” because their opposition to the debt ceiling bill “put us on the brink of disaster.” To which I queried, “Are the Democrats who voted against the bill also dangerous persons?”

Yet a recurring question came up during the course of the discussion: “What motivates the Tea Party?” During the break, I was approached by Sheila and we had a pleasant conversation. I made a point of asking her if she either personally knew or had met any Tea Party activists. She replied in the negative. I suggested that it if she and others wanted to know what motivates Tea Partiers that it would do them no harm in talking to them. “Oh, I don’t need to talk to them to know what they’re about,” she replied. “There’s plenty of information around that I can read.”

“So what do you read?” I asked. Sheila retorted, “I read the New York Times, the Boston Globe and the New Yorker.”

Well, I had to ask. After all, this would be the same New York Times in which Thomas Friedman described the Tea Party as a “Hezbollah faction” bent on taking Republicans “on a suicide mission.” Alas, The Gray Lady can always be relied upon to assess the Tea Party with language both rich in restraint and in sobriety. But to give Sheila her due she did make a point of saying that she not only liked Jeff Jacoby, the lone conservative columnist at the Boston Globe, but that she also liked his column last week in which he chastised Friedman and others for their incendiary language against the Tea Party.

Yet for every left-winger who acknowledges that their leading lights are capable of directing them towards darkness there are a thousand liberals, socialists, communists and self-described progressives who are perfectly content to equate Tea Partiers with terrorists. When Marvin took me to task for defending the Tea Party members who voted against raising the debt ceiling, I asked him if he honestly considered them to be terrorists. “Yes, because they instilled fear into people,” said Marvin. “But surely there is a difference between someone who casts a no vote in Congress and someone who navigates an airplane into a building,” I said. Marvin nonchalantly quipped, “It depends on how you use the word terrorist.” So in Marvin’s world (and that of many leftists in this country), there is no difference between those who want limited government and those responsible for the attacks of September 11, 2001. If this isn’t a sad state of affairs nearly a decade removed from that act of evil, then I don’t know what is.

I made a point of reiterating publicly what I said privately to Sheila. If progressives really want to know what the Tea Party is about, then they should go talk to them. You don’t have to agree with them, but just hear them out. Gaston seemed quite amenable to this idea and suggested that the Ethical Society reach out to the Tea Party. However, other members threw cold water on it, suggesting that they had more pressing matters to attend to (like combating racism and promoting humanism). Of course, how is it that you can promote humanism if you don’t view people who embrace the Tea Party as human beings?

Collectivism is always highlighted by loathing of others.

The loathing can occur on an ideological level if it actually had any substance or on a personal attack level if there is nothing to it.

It's really quite amazing to sit back and watch the Ruling Class in both parties attack the Tea Party.

It proves conclusively that the Ruling Class doesn't realize the party is over and the chaperones have arrived to clean up the mess and send everyone home.

The attack on the Tea Party is an attack on middle America which isn't surprising.

It's the first step to raising taxes on middle America, you know, the Hobbits.

There is no thrill like watching the rich and elite of a political class attack their underlings who simply want a fair shake.

The public observed this early in the last Presidential cycle when Obama described Pennsylvanians as bitter, gun toting clingers to religion.

The only religion that passes muster inside the beltway is big government. The deacons of the church of big government are the elected officials and they must protect the church against all insurrection.

Although the economy is imploding thanks to the actions of a greedy and corrupt political class that same group and their incompetent allies in the main stream media would rather focus on a side show like the Tea Party.

If they focused on the facts they would have to admit failure. They won't admit failure because that would indicate they should resign their exalted positions.

Instead it's better to use subterfuge as a means of concealing the fact that you don't know what you are doing while you continue to blunder ahead.

Alan Brooks| 8.9.11 @ 10:14AM

What I detest about the Tea Party is their cloaking themselves in 1774; I can see their representing 1981, but the Tea Partiers have little in common with the frugal values of Massachusetts before the Amerrican Revolution.
And Boston 2011 is so different from what it was like in 1774 it is not even funny. Most Tea Partiers couldn't even ride a horse from Boston to anywhere in Massachusetts if their lives depended on it. A limo, yes-- a horse, no.
'Conservatism' in America is a nostalgia club with little or no substance left to it. And BTW, I never said Bush was a bad president, he just didn't conserve anything-- and neither will the Tea Party.

It is merely a game: you don't take it seriously, do you?

Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 8.9.11 @ 10:37AM

I take all criminal enterprises seriously, including the Ruling Class.

Alan Brooks| 8.9.11 @ 11:48AM

All you will do is possibly replace one ruling class with another.

Doctor Right| 8.9.11 @ 2:07PM

Wrong...as usual.

Under a limited, Constitutional government, there is NO "ruling class".

And that's precisely why Liberals HATE the US Constitution.

Despite their preening and posturing to the contrary, Liberals despise the middle class. They despise their taste, their customs, their "bourgeois" patriotism...

But what Liberals despise the most about the middle class is their POWER.

Liberals hate the fact that these declasse' rubes have money, and that they can vote Liberals out of power.

And that's why Liberals work hard to make allies of the middle class at the same time they're plotting to destroy them.

The Liberal only wants two classes to exist:

The elite, Liberal ruling class...and the proles.

It's not a game, Alan. It's war. And the middle-class is finally waking-up to the games you pathetic Libs have been playing for the last 70 years, and next year at the voting booth, they're going to make you pay...again.

And yes...The Tea Party are the inheritors of the Spirit of 1776 AND of 1981.

You Libs are the inheritors of all the decrepit, dysfunctional, impoverished socialist regimes that have ever existed.

YeloStalyn| 8.9.11 @ 10:43AM

What, pray tell, is an idea espoused by the Tea Party that would be rejected by the Founders? Or... vice versa?

To simply say so is far short of it being fact. For example... if I say that Obama is a Communist it doesn't make it so. But if I then point out that he has surrounded himself by numerous people who espouse praise for Communist leaders (Mao for one... and this was from two different members of Obama's admin), if I point out that he said himself that he would seek out Communists to hang out with in college... or when he says things like "spread the wealth around" or "fair share" (despite the facts on this one to the contrary)... then it is a lot more believable that he is, in fact, a Communist and not simply because I said so.

Alan Brooks| 8.9.11 @ 11:47AM

All I can say to you that you would understand is: if you can invent a time machine then we can return to the past. You cannot live in the '80s forever, it does not go on forever.

Can Wayne's mom return to the '50s? no.

YeloStalyn| 8.9.11 @ 12:04PM

No... she can't. BUT... she can live by ideas and principles first espoused in the '50s. Or even farther back than that.

So... back to my question...
What, of those ideas that the Tea Party espouses, would be rejected by the Founders?

It's an easy question and to make it into some sort of sci-fi time travel equation is a very lame dodge.

Aaron, I fear for our safety because so many people are in denial of the LEFT and their destructive hehavior --yours included. II say this because this aspect should be under our belt-your belt by now after almost 3 years of Obama and even before that.
What really scares me is this: If the Left really controlled this nation totally, how far would they go to wipe out opposition. And you better bet they would !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama and the LEFT are playing very dangerous with us and we all have to be alert at all times.

If they had total control of this country, then they would go as far as Mao or Stalin to stamp out any opposition to that said control. It always goes to that point if one party rule is established.

Good link USS.

Obama has proved his fundamental stupidity, through his supposed level of higher education, that he cannot take action.

Action, in any meaningful way, is evidence of intellectual thought pattern. But not of his type, standing stupidly (Aug 5) at a speech, waiting speechless for the teleprompter to come up.

This is a tool, or puppet, of a larger group of thought, indeed inspired by the Ayers/Dorhn ideology and projected into power by the manipulation of a group (American blacks, of which Obama is not) who only seems to have the answers as long as they don't require details -- he doesn't have those.

Education (and the Rules for Radicals) has given him only enough to seem that he knows what he is talking about ... by far not the 'messiah' or 'brilliant' man he was acclaimed.

Meanwhile, the progressive left continues to provide him with the academic-style syllabus he needs all the while continuing, themselves, to provide cover by ever increasing accusations to any opposition. Or clear thought.

Bill| 8.9.11 @ 4:51PM

That's because the left-wing revolutionary approach is that the old order must be brought down before it causes any more misery, and then the new world will come organically after the revolution.

That's why the best the leftists can come up with is that the working class must become class-conscious, revolt against the capitalist and the bourgeois class, institute the dictatorship of the proletariat, institute socialism, allow the New Soviet Man to evolve, then enjoy the Classless Society under communism. I mean, that's a pretty vague recipe for the new order, isn't it? But it's the best the socialists can do.

Darin| 8.9.11 @ 6:54AM

- The left condones slavery because it religates the unborn to second-class-citizen status and does not consider them human beings.
- The left considers it an abomination for a mother to knowingly have a disabled child.
- The left champions a lifestyle with known serious health risks.
- The left does not view as theft the forced taking of one persons earnings and giving those earnings to another person.

Honestly, I don't know if the left is mentally sick, plain evil, or some combination.

RT| 8.9.11 @ 7:15AM

Darin, the answer is that they are evil. The law of God - that is, the knowledge of right and wrong - is written on our hearts. The Left, along with the rest of us, know that intentionally and avoidably killing the most innocent among us is wrong. Yet they chose to do so because they want to. The good news is that there is redemption through forgiveness in Jesus Christ. However, make no mistake about what they Left advocates: it is pure evil.

Conservative View| 8.9.11 @ 9:43AM

ON THE MYTH OF INEXHAUSTIBLE WEALTH AND THE DOGMA OF RATIONAL MORALITY

Actually Darin, it is none of the above. They are not mentally sick, plain evil, or some combination of both. They are, within their own constructs, the only sane people on earth, and the most moral. It is important to understand just why that is so.

For the liberal, America is the sourse of inexhaustible wealth. We always have money. We have money to help the sick, money to aid the poor. We have money to plan motherhood, and money to help the mother that can't afford the child. Just like a child going to the bank with his mother, the liberals believe that the bank is a money store. Just go there and get more when ever you wish.

To the liberal, not helping the poor, not helping the expecting mother, not helping a person to buy a house, or get a doctor is the height of immorality. How can you abandon the poor? Do you want them to starve on the streets? Are you really ready for the bread lines? This is the liberal position. And for a liberal, using any means necessary to aid the poor is all to the common good.

You can't talk to a liberal when your base line of conversation is that he is evil, stupid, or insane. He doesn't see himself that way. He believes, absolutely believes with his whole heart and soul, that he is the most rational, and most moral, of anyone. He also believes that America is a land of inexhaustible wealth, wealth that must be used to further his moral agenda.

That we are not the land of inexhaustible wealth is shaking the very foundation of liberalism to it's very core. It is small wonder that they so quickly blame the Tea Party for the woes of the country. It is the Tea Party that is saying, at last, that American wealth is NOT inexhaustible, that the bank is empty. And with an empty bank, they can no longer further their moral agenda.

This explains the insistance on taxing the rich. Why the rich must have the money to sustain American, must have the money to aid the poor. It is their moral duty to spend all of their wealth on what the liberals decide is the moral choice. That the rich do not have the money to do so doesn't get through to them. After all, America is the land of inexaustible wealth.

The only way to argue with a liberal is to ask one simple question, "where's the money?" and to keep asking and keep asking that question. Each time they come up with a reply, show them their reply is nonsense. And then ask the question again. This shakes their foundations. They can not accept that what they want to do can't be done.

Liberals are that ten year old standing beside mommy at the bank. The money store never runs out of money, and all you have to do is stand there and get some. They don't dare believe anything else, for anything else would mean that they could no longer impose their belief in rational morality upon the world. They are horrorfied to think that the day is here when they must live in a world where their rules of rational morality can no longer be imposed. To the liberal that would be a life spent living in hell.

YeloStalyn| 8.9.11 @ 10:50AM

While I agree with you about a liberals view of self... that doesn't change the external fact that they are, indeed, evil.

They are knowingly making a choice that inherently they know to be wrong but have long since justified it to themselves under the guise of "morality." They have bought into the "ends justify the means" philosophy. And, if the ends are good, then they view the means as moral by default.

This is not a natural view of the world. A child does not look that far down the road to see what good may come of some action today. They live in the hear and now... and as such, they view the now in terms of right and wrong. As we get older, the liberals reject that natural sense to judge each thing on its own merits and instead begin to try to make their own rules saying, "I can do to you want I want, no matter how wrong, so long as I do good in the end." The conservative, however, realizes that an immoral man can't be justified by one grand stand event in the end but can only be moral by the sum of all the choices he makes along the way.

Liberals are evil. They just don't admit it.

Conservative View| 8.9.11 @ 11:25AM

YELO

You are right in much of what you have said, but please note that I mentioned "rational morality" as opposed to "natural morality."

Now to explain - - suppose you came upon a starving man by a lake. The liberal would buy the man a fish, for afterall, the man is starving now. He needs food now, so the moral choice, the only choice is to feed him now.

The natural moralist might instead spend that money not on a fish, but rather a fish hook, and let the man catch his dinner, today, tomarrow and so on.

The liberal would say, "But what if he doesn't catch a fish? He would starve." True enough. But to buy him a fish today is to feed him only today. Tomarrow you have to buy him another fish, and then another, until you are out of money to buy fish.

That is where we are right now. Are liberals evil in their hearts? I don't think so. Misguided, foolish, not anywhere near as rational as they think they are perhaps, but not truly evil. I still believe in the basic goodness of man. Even the mentality of liberals hasn't managed to kill that within me.

YeloStalyn| 8.9.11 @ 11:44AM

Maybe the best way to say it is not that all liberals ARE evil... but they all DO evil.

And, while not necissarily applicable to this conversation, I would have to say that I am more Hobbesian than Lockean in my view of humanity. We are born first knowing the desires of the flesh before we know the calling of God. Original Sin binds us to being vile and it is not until we come to know Christ that we can be "good"... and even then, that is only through the grace of God that we can serve in His name to do good FOR Him, and not OF us.

Conservative View| 8.9.11 @ 12:57PM

Robert S.| 8.9.11 @ 10:55AM

This view of the liberal mindset in terms of Inexhaustible Wealth is excellent. Having been married to a liberal social-worker, I have to agree they are not evil. They lack the ability to perform any kind of cost-benefits analysis. If it is the "right thing to do" then it must be done. Cost is irrelevant. Any other conclusion would be immoral or uncaring. The only way that makes sense is with the concept of Inexhasutible Wealth.
The only question I could fall back on is "where does the money come from?" Any other question brought my humanity into question. Even so, the best answer I ever received was a puzzled stare.

It’s a culture war that is moving from a cold war to a hot war. The 2012 election will bring it out into the truth out into the open, there are some issues that just do not have a middle ground. It is very black and white at times. When you see abortion as a women’s right where is the middle ground? When you see all human life at any stage as scared how can you have a middle ground?
Either God created the world or He didn’t, not much room for compromise there. When you start to compromise with the left, you become the left. That is the point of the Tea Party. We didn’t send them to Washington to compromise, if I wanted Obama to get his way I would have voted Democrat. The Tea party is doing what I want, they are saying ENOUGH! And holding the line. If the left doesn’t like it too bad!

"In order to satisfy such curiosity, it is necessary to spend time among liberals, socialists, communists and self-described progressives."

With all due respect, no, you don't have to spend time among them to understand why they hate the Tea Party.

It's really simple. The Tea Party has exposed the ruling elite as the criminals they are and it threatens to destroy their shell game once and for all.

We're threatening their very political existence. They can't fight back with argument or debate because their ideology has finally... finally been proven bankrupt. They can only respond with name calling and vicious personal attacks.

These attacks are all the proof we need to know the Tea Party is succeeding. All we have to do is keep it up. The Beltway culture will eventually explode. It can not resist the relentless pressure of the obvious truth carried forward by the Internet Reformation.

One cannot help but wonder, what shapes such attitudes in the first place.
I don't know. Maybe, it's the ORIGINS of their IDEOLOGY? Maybe, it's the TENENTS of their Religion? Maybe it's IMPUNITY, that loosens their lips?
These Elitists. These Sons and Daughters of MARX and ENGELLS.
Marx believed that (and I'm paraphrasing) "It would probably easier to install his Philosophy, if there were LESS PEOPLE". He figured that the ELLIMINATION of 300 MILLION people, or so, would be a good starting point.
Then, there's the Poet - Robert Frost, who mused about "Coming up with a GAS, to rid the world of the less desirable".
These are THE LEFT'S Founding Fathers.
Lenin: Mass Murderer. Stalin: Mass Murderer. Mao: Mass Murderer. Pol Pot and Ho Chi Min: Mass Murderers. They still revere CASTRO and CHE: Murderers. The SHINING PATH and FARC: Murderers. The ROSENBERGS and ALGER HISS: Soviet Spies.
"One cannot help but wonder, what shapes such attitudes in the first place."
Maybe, it's IMPUNITY?
Do you know the old joke? Why does a Dog lick himself? Because he can.
Why does the LEFT say the things they say? Because they KNOW that no-one in the Media (save FOX and Talk Radio) will call them on it. Surely, no one of their GE OWNED Sycophants. They know that the TIMES, the WAPO, and all of the other Propaganda Arms of the Democrat Party, will let them ride free. No matter what they say, or do.
Example. The RACE RIOTS going on, RIGHT NOW, in America's Cities, Malls, State Fairs, and Fast Food Restaurants.
Anybody see anything on the T.V. about this? Any FRONT PAGE STORIES? Has the WHITE HOUSE or the JUSTICE DEPARTMENT said ANYTHING? After all. These are "THEIR PEOPLE".
MOBS of BLACKS, terrorizing people of other races. Pulling them from their cars. BEATING THEM, viciously. Stealing, and Burning, and TERRORIZING Non Blacks, all over this Country.
Does the LEFT give a SH*T? No.
Does the PRESS give a SH*T?
No.
Because THE ONE, himself, is BLACK. And, to highlight what's really going on, would look bad for him.
These ATTACKS go on, unabated. If the Races were REVERSED? If WHITES were attacking BLACKS? The S&P Downgrade, wouldn't even have made the back page of the papers.
This is the Left. Let the Blacks run wild. It will keep their minds off of their CRUSHING UNEMPLOYMENT. Shining light on this, can only be a bad thing for our LEADER.
In conclusion, the LEFT says and does, what it does, because they are single minded. They are like the Radical Muslim. They're very patient. They keep coming at you. Look at the SHELLACKING they just took, in 2010. Has it changed them at all? Or, are they still pushing for the same things that got them THROWN OUT last November?
I'm glad that Thomas Friedman was sourced. he is the perfect example of how the LEFT operates. He's never right. He's never been right, in his life.
Yasser Arafat got a Nobel Prize for PEACE. So did Jimmy Carter. So did Al Gore. So did Barack Hussein Obama/Barry Soetoro/Abu Hussain. Paul Krugman got a Nobel Prize in Economics. Surely, Tom Friedman deserves one for BEING WRONG.
The Left has no Humanity?
The FISH rots from the head, down. Their LEADER gets his Philosophical Underpinnings from a BOOK dedicated to LUCIFER.
And they follow their LEADER.
No matter what.

Ken (Old Texican)| 8.9.11 @ 8:00AM

Aaron,
I have to quibble with your title. ::
"The Left Has No Humanity"

Sir, the Left is all too "human", ie "desperately wicked" without the saving grace of a relationship with God.
From the ancient Israelis worshiping and sacrificing to Idols...
...to modern Leftists worshiping Gaia;

Micah said it best: "Do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God".
Unrestrained.....
by force.....the Left has no mercy, need not do justly, and certainly has no humility.

...ie: desperately wicked.

Michael L. Hauschild| 8.9.11 @ 8:15AM

The department server at the the first University I taught at was named "Gaia." It was Macintosh based, "lost" data all the time, and was roundly dispised.

Occam's Tool| 8.9.11 @ 11:33AM

Ours at TCU was "Gandalf." It was pretty cool for its time, actually. I liked it.

davelnaf| 8.9.11 @ 8:14AM

The intellectual and emotional squalor of the anti-Tea Party group described in the article might have made for depressing reading several decades ago. But this is SOP for these people and we have, sadly, gotten too used—or numbed—to it by now.

We hardly need more motivation to throw out the office holding soul mates of these people next year, but one more example never hurts.

Brian Mc| 8.9.11 @ 8:17AM

I don't need to know what the left thinks. I used to be one of them and I don't want to go to that dark place; that venimous cess pool of death, ever again. They are like the acclamations uttered by the Pied Piper...free treats and happiness for all who enter. And then, the cave wall slams shut. They are the enemy and I resent them with every fibre of my being. I need not consort with evil to know evil. Liberal culture is the culture of death: they have a platform...the list is long and there is nothing to see there but death.

Mr ED| 8.9.11 @ 8:17AM

Modern Liberalism is a new-age religion grounded in fanatical narcissistic faith in ones own superiority and infalibility. Liberals worldview begins with an unreasoning, false self-aggrandizement and metastasizes like a Mandelbrot set, endlessly repeating the false patterns of Victim/Opressor/Hero (They always get to play hero, thank you) and projecting them onto every nook and cranny of life. The Left substitutes the "Man of Action" for god and "Fairness" for love.

The utter incoherrence of Modern Liberalism always collapses under the weight of reality, just don't expect the shock-and-awe of reality to ever shake the faith of true Liberals in their own presumed perfect infallability and enlightenment. Leaving the Leftist faith requires those accolytes who seek genuine truth to first consider that they are neither infallible nor the smartest guys in the room, all anathema to narcissistic Leftists. Consider that while you look at the arrogant sneers of the Obamesiah while he looks down on the little people during his press conferences.

Pecos Pete| 8.9.11 @ 8:25AM

But, Mr. Ed, it feels so good to be a liberal/progressive/Marxist.

You are absolutely correct when you say that "fanatical narcissistic faith" is their foundation in life.

JimH| 8.9.11 @ 8:19AM

Since those on the left consider themselves to be the forces of light and goodness, anyone who disagrees with them are by definition evil, or at best dupes of the evil doers.

Petronius| 8.9.11 @ 8:39AM

The left view themselves as omnipotent. How dare anyone get in their way? Like their parents, maybe? The starting points of liberalism are contempt for traditional authority and morality, and the hypocritical behavior of those who used to wield that authority. They were told they live in a "free country". To them that meant nobody could tell them what to do. Those in authority smacked them around and forced them to behave. And the war was declared. Now these rotten spoiled snots control all the powers of state. The Tea Party are the last of the ancient regime and the embodiment of everything they hate: primarily, Christianity and the market. So we are for the chop. The ten Commandments call for limits on their wanton behavior. The market places the onus upon them to compete with their neighbors to earn their living in an environment where work is a duty and employment a privilege. And these traditional imposts are intolerable to them. The liberals will never change or quit. They will never be satisfied either. But the line in the sand has not been crossed yet. When the first Tea Party patriot gets assassinated and the perp gets away with murder, there will be a reckoning.

Sam Vaughn| 8.9.11 @ 8:51AM

Net it out. I supported the Tea Party the day I heard Rick Santelli's passionate rant. Ordinary Americans who do their best to do the right thing everyday said I'm going to get involved. We realized that the Repulican Party was our best shot at a voice, imperfect as it is. We will throw out charlatans, double-dealers (Boehner) and demand character, responsibility, accountability and honesty.

Charles Martel| 8.10.11 @ 5:13AM

Me too, and amen!

Louis Jenkins| 8.9.11 @ 8:51AM

Go to a BBQ and do you expect to recieve a steak?
Mr. Goldstein, you went into the pit to beard the lion. I believe you expected the ignorance and lies that were touted. It speaks for itself. If the creatures of the night want to kill the Tea Party, or Conservatives, then so be it. However, we too have sharp daggers hidden amongst our person and can make an accounting of ourselves. Next year there will be more hard liners, and the rhetoric from those people will increase.

Mike D.| 8.9.11 @ 9:11AM

These leftists will, as the 2012 elections get close, go from shrill to absolute hysteria to viscious as they know they are now in the open as to what they are and the disguises are stripped. They are cornered like rats and they will behave as such.

YeloStalyn| 8.9.11 @ 10:53AM

You're right... they will behave like a cornered wild animal.

The question is will we behave in a way that is equally potent? Are we willing to do the things necissary to fight them back? If they are willing to kill you, what are we willing to do to stop them?

That's a question I have trouble answering as a Christian. But not one I have trouble answering as an American.

Bill| 8.9.11 @ 9:03AM

When I read that the good people of the Ethical Society of Boston are characterizing people who subscribe to a set of beliefs and views that are "irrational" with political positions that "aren't ideas but a string of words," and saying that Tea Party activists aren't so much irrational as they were "simplistic" because they didn't take technological advancements such as the Internet into account, and that the Tea Party is made up of "white, right religious types," what I'm seeing is a group that thinks that that group is composed of folks who live in the hinterlands, where the inbred imbeciles play their guitars on the back porch of the shanty while the Ned Beattys of the world mock them for knowing nothing of the nuanced worlds of Cambridge and Berkeley.

C. S. P. Schofield| 8.9.11 @ 9:23AM

I propose two causes for the Left's rhetorical extremism;

1) They do not consider the Islamic Terrorist to be a serious threat. This makes it less of a stretch to compare people to them.

2) There is very little that a would-be Aristocrat fears and hates more than a Peasant who declines to acknowledge the Aristocrat's obvious superiority.

The would-be Aristocrats of the insulated Left fear and hate the Tea Party at least as much as they fear and hate Islamic Terrorists. It is therefore hardly surprising that they conflate the two.

Bill Bennett observed on The OReilly Factor that the left doesn't think real terrorists are terrorists yet they throw the label around at their political opponents. It says a lot.

Of course they dehumanize opponents. The religious rally that the author attended, and it was a religious rally in the sense of the word "humanism" as a religion, where true believers are regarded as enlightened and human, literally, due to their belief while those who don't buy into it are unenlightened animals.

For all the talk they make against Christianity and it's historical conversion by force of much of Europe, they are thinking and acting in precisely the same way.

Let's look at the spreading terror allegation. The tea party apparently spread terror NOT by threatening default (that's over) but the continued terror they feel in that they know the tea party has a point and this is being recognized by reality. There is not enough money for them to borrow to keep socialism going beyond another 10 years and possibly even less than that. The USA is now in the same state as the Soviet Union during the 80's and that should be a terrifying prospect for EVERYONE.

Let's go back to the analogy with the guys smashing planes into buildings. In this case, they're the ones destroying the country with their massive debts and overspending and they blame the tea party as terrorists for simply informing people of what's happening. They think that the passengers will be just fine if they stay strapped into their seats and nobody tells them what's happening.

After watching the Dow Jones index drop 635 points, following his brief lunchtime statement, he spent the evening at two fundraisers in D.C. Roughly 140 people attended the $7,500 per plate event at the home of Don and Katrina Peebles, raising $1 million for his re-election campaign. Roughly 60 people attended the second fundraiser at the St. Regis Hotel in downtown D.C., according to a press report which did not include any financial data... To COUNTER the UNFAIR DEMONIZATION of the TEA PARTY

The Dems are trying to demonize the Teaparty with generalized, nebulous attacks on them as terrorists

A Teaparty SpokesPerson(s) should clearly list the 4 or 5 itms the Teaparty wants in a discussion of the Debt Negotiations to upgrade our S&P Rating back to AAA

Then demand to know what's terrorist about these demands.

Also, the Teaparty should point out that it was the underlying policies of Obama not the contentiousness of the Debt Ceiling debate that got us to the brink of insolvency.

"Compared with previous projections, our revised base case scenario now assumes that the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, due to expire by the end of 2012,

It simply amazes me that some so self-described tea partiers here who[hopefully] read Aaron's accurate article [and many many others here at TAS] still selectively smear all Republicans with those typically described here/generally liberals/progressives/Democrats/extremists/socialists. It seem to be always THEM/BOTH/RINOS/CINOS, with never a dictinion between Republicans and Democrats [which this article/others accurately protray]. These so-called tea partiers are supposedly Republicans that constantly trash their own political party instead of these domestic terrorists within/composing the Democratic Party. The insanity of after the typical insults/labeling/dehumanizing/slandering etc of Republican conservatives [check out Newsweek's latest cover story concerning the insulting trashing of Michelle Bachmann] that these tea partiers do not defend their own party members and lash out/critisize these DEMOCRATS that are attacking them and their ultra conservative movement. It simply makes one wonder WHOSE SIDE ARE THEY ON ????????

'.......Limbaugh on Market Collapse: Obama Engineering the Decline of America Monday, August 8, 2011 06:17 PM By: Jim Meyers
Top-rated talk radio host Rush Limbaugh finds a “silver lining” in the downgrading of America’s credit rating: There no longer is any doubt that President Barack Obama can be roundly defeated in 2012.“Obamageddon — that's what we have witnessed since Friday,” Rush told his listeners on Monday.“Obamageddon. Barackalypse Now. The only silver lining I can find is that as far as 2012 goes, Obama's a Debt Man Walking. Anybody want to tell me he's not landslidable now?“Let me repeat this as the Media Tweak of the Day: ‘What we have witnessed since Friday is Obamageddon, Barackalypse Now. And the only silver lining out there is that as far as 2012 goes, Obama's now Debt Man Walking."In his blistering attack on Obama and the Democrats, Limbaugh asserted that “we have a president that’s overseeing — engineering — the decline of the American republic.”He also charged that Democrats are trying to play the blame game against Republicans over the financial crisis.“Obama is always running around complaining and whining and moaning about all that he inherited from George W. Bush,” Rush said.“Well, he inherited a AAA credit rating, an unemployment rate of 5.7 percent....Limbaugh's comments came the Monday after Standard & Poor's downgraded the U.S. credit rating from AAA to AA-plus , and the Dow tanked 634 points. Obama blamed the downgrade on political gridlock in Washington and said he would offer some recommendations on how to reduce federal deficits.Obama stopped short of sharp criticism of Standard & Poor's for its downgrade of U.S. debt to AA-plus from AAA on Friday. Senior administration officials have accused S&P of going ahead with the downgrade despite a $2 trillion mathematical error."Markets will rise and fall, but this is the United States of America. No matter what some agency may say, we have always been and always will be a triple-A country," Obama said.As Obama spoke, stock markets were registering another steep decline, dropping more than 450 points in afternoon trading.A joint bipartisan congressional committee, to be formed under the legislation passed last week that averted a government default, is to report its recommendations in late November on how to cut $1.5 trillion in spending over a decade.Obama said he would offer his own recommendations for fixing the problem and cited again the need to raise taxes on wealthier Americans and make modest adjustments to popular but expensive entitlement programs.
Limbaugh took the president's comments about the S&P, and threw them right back.
“What are the Democrats doing? Blaming the referees! Blaming Standard & Poor's! That always changes the outcome, doesn't it? Blame the refs. “So go ahead and blame Standard & Poor's all you want, Democrats. Now they're blaming the military! Barney Frank and the Democrats are trying to say it's the military's fault that we've been downgraded.“This is the fault of the Democrat Party," Limbaugh said, exasperated. Limbaugh went on to say: “So now we know what Obama got for his birthday: A downgrade of our credit rating, probably exactly what he wanted in his heart of hearts . . .“World War II, we had a AAA credit rating, and we lose it now, and for what? For what great purpose did we lose it? Except an ideological hatred of American capitalism and a love of class warfare, what did we lose our AAA rating for? “Think about it: Obama's finally managed another major accomplishment on that list he told us he had, that list that he said he'd only done about 70 percent so far. At long last, Obama and his fellow Democrats have finally been able to convince the world that we are just another country, after all. There's nothing exceptional about us or our economy.“For crying out loud, France has a higher credit rating than we do. France! They produce cheese and perfume, for crying out loud!”......"

simon templar| 8.9.11 @ 2:26PM

Maybe just a tiny bit of a hack but you are absolutely right about where the major responsibility and blame rest for most of this mess. It is also true that we have had some enablers and backsliders in the GOP as well and a Washington elite of GOP politicians, not all of them, that have undermined conservativism and our nation. You surely can concede this?

simon templar| 8.9.11 @ 2:32PM

First, they (Tea Party) are on the side of the people not the political parties. You are right, no one should be making the claim that all republicans are bad and equally to be blamed. This is nonsense and untrue. There have been hundreds of hard working honest republican politicians that have fought the good fight for years and often are not recognized and thanked. Unfortunately, there have also been RINO's and backsliders as well that have undermined thier efforts.

I seriously doubt the author has ever met an actual communist. To suggest that he was going to hang out with them because he was going to hang out with liberals simply demostrates how truly stupid the author is.

Jack London| 8.9.11 @ 2:57PM

The reason that the Tea Party lacks humanity is that it was founded on lack of concern for the many people who fell victim to predatory home lending. Mind you, we should feel rather sorry for Tea Partiers because no sooner had they jumped on those who signed up for bait and switch mortgages, they were sucked into a Koch brothers nightmare that will destroy their own living standards. It's some trick to get people to vote for their own elimination.

YeloStalyn| 8.9.11 @ 3:05PM

If a crocodile opens its mouth and a bird flies into it... who's fault is it if the bird gets eaten?

Who walked into the bank? Who didn't know their own finances? Who signed on the dotted line?

Oh... that's right... the bankers! That's the only plausible answer if a) the world is ruled by common sense (this is necissary for the answer to NOT be Bugs Bunny or some such) AND b) if liberals are right.

My wife and I bought our house during the "predatory lending" era. We were in our early 20s, just got jobs out of college... and we were approved for WAY more than we could afford. You're telling me that if we went ahead and bought a house at what they were willing to lend us... if WE signed off on it... if WE decided to buy THAT house... that it was totally NOT my fault?

You, sir, are stupid.

simon templar| 8.9.11 @ 3:07PM

Once again false premise. Predatory home lending is a myth you jackasses fabricated. Banks lend money to customers under clear regulations that all information about loans MUST be made transparent and clear. Banks were furthemore forced to make these loans to high risk customers by the fed. Adjustable mortgages have been around for years. No one fell victim to anything. You are a complete idiot and a liar.

Bill| 8.9.11 @ 4:38PM

I'm not aware of any predatory lending in the mortgage field. I am aware of extortionate treatment of the mortgage banking industry when the federal government decided that bankers must give mortgages to people who would not have been approved for mortgage loans.

After that, the investment industry used its cleverness to bend that extortion to the end of making a profit off of bad mortgages.

Then people began defaulting on their mortgages when the economy faltered and they began losing their jobs.

Now it's all the fault of the mortgage bankers and the investment brokers. Riiiiight.

simon templar| 8.9.11 @ 5:10PM

Well, you are partially correct. The reality is the banks were forced to give these loans by the fed. It is not in the interest of a bank or mortgage company to give a loan to a high risk customer. It is also a fact that banking regulations prohibit extortion and special rates for different customers. Not sure where you heard that one.
Banks and mortgage companies have been selling these mortgages as investment instruments for decades. Now, given the risks of these new loans, the banking and investment community did the only rational thing that business ever does. They created the derivitive to spread the risk and bundled these risky loans with better ones and sold them. Yes, wall street and wall street investment companies bought them, pushed them, speculated with them. Some may argue that they knew that these derivitives were bogus and their potential as toxic assets. Making a profit, however, is in itself not a sin or unethical. Asking for a bail out on your losses from the tax payers and getting one is criminal. Federal government promoting and assisting in these bail outs is also criminal as they were essentailly responsible for the matter in the first place.

So, the fault lies with the federal government who interfered with and distorted the private markets and the investment companies who went along with the ride and later asked us to pick up the bill when their speculation and bad investments went south.

Bill| 8.10.11 @ 2:32PM

1. I used the term "extortionate" and "extortion" to characterize what the federal government did to the mortgage brokers;

2. Your conclusion and mine are congruent, except that it wasn't the private investment companies who asked us to pick up the bill; it was the government that said these business were "too big to fail."

That was bull pucky of the first and smelliest order; in the past, when businesses finagled their finances so badly that they ran out of money, they went bankrupt, which is what should have happened this time, too.

Oldefarte| 8.9.11 @ 3:17PM

BS! Predatory landing my ars! The stupid, financially incompetents never should have applied for mortgages in the first place since their had neither the financial income stability or the financial assets/income to either adequately put forth a 20% down payment or to thereafter payt the 30 years of mortgage payments. They are financial deadbeats that were STEALING from the financial community and should have been thrown in jail for their illegality. And the reason why they were not so typically treated as thieves? DEMOCRATS and the DEMOCRATIC PARTY, that's why, who legislated the CRA of 1977 that established the legality of attacking banks/mortgagors by disallowing REDLINING and forcing them to loan to credit unworthy applicants. This was followed up by Fannie/Freddie/HUD/federal governments browbeating banks into granting these worthless loans to financial incompetents and snowballing into the current real estate/banking/credit crisis [ie S&P downgrade of our government credit/paper]. You liberal Democrat idiots make me sick to my stomach. If you and your ilk WANT TO FIGHT POVERTY, GO GET A GD JOB! You can't have it both ways, not everyone who lost their homes were idiots. Many had excellent credit, steady job and income history before running into our recent recession. How long would you keep your property with no income? Most people in this country are a lay-off and a couple months away from being on the street. That doesn't make them stupid.

Surely, by now, out of sheer luck, one post by the lying idiot Equus Asinus Enthalpy London should have been the correct position on an issue, as even a broken clock tells the correct time at least once a day, but that has not happened yet, as the archives bear out in agonizing detail.

Ground Control| 8.9.11 @ 7:14PM

Here we go again. More abject stupidity from Mr. London. His first statement "The reason that the Tea Party lacks humanity ..." is premised by an assumption, not a fact. And it is an assumption for which there is no evidence. To claim that the Tea Party "lacks humanity" is absurd. To use this to justify more false statements, regarding "predatory mortgages" etc... is a logical fallacy. But then Mr. London is just full of logical fallacies.

Tea Party news - From March 2010:
Preceding the president's speech to a gathering of House Democrats, thousands of protesters descended around the Capitol to protest the passage of health care reform. The gathering quickly turned into abusive heckling, as members of Congress passing through Longworth House office building were subjected to epithets and even mild physical abuse.

A staffer for Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) had been spat on by a protestor. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a hero of the civil rights movement, was called a 'ni--er.' And Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was called a "faggot," as protestors shouted at him with deliberately lisp-y screams. Frank, approached in the halls after the president's speech, shrugged off the incident.

But Clyburn was downright incredulous, saying he had not witnessed such treatment since he was leading civil rights protests in South Carolina in the 1960s.

Oldefarte| 8.9.11 @ 3:45PM

The other BARREL of the double Limbaugh explains it even more succinctly that these tea party patriots are the reason WHY the government has changed from SPENDING to SAVING our taxpayers' hard earned money [and that the S&P's downgrade was simply their assessment that DEMOCRATS refused to cooperate in deeper-needed spending reductions]:

'.... Obama Against Any Kind of Reform
Tuesday, August 9, 2011 02:35 PM
By: David Limbaugh.Being a disciple of Saul Alinsky might not be so easy as it would appear. President Obama and his minions obviously can't decide whom to scapegoat for the nation's credit downgrade and our financial crisis. One thing is for sure: It's not in Barack Obama to accept personal responsibility for the consequences of his actions and policies. He still won't own this economy and the exploding spending spiral, reminding us at every turn that our problems are a result of what he "inherited" from President Bush.Instead of seeking to soothe the nation on word of the downgrade by Standard & Poor's, Obama played golf, prepared for more campaign fundraisers and avoided the cameras — for a change. But there can be little doubt he was strategizing about whom to blame for this unfolding catastrophe. The first and most obvious choice would probably have been his treasury secretary, Timothy Geithner — except that to blame Geithner would have been tantamount to blaming himself; Geithner is Obama's guy. Nix that.So why not blame Europe and the global markets? Well, there was some of that, but that's a bit too far from home, so to speak. An Alinsky-model target is usually more accessible and less sympathetic — you know, someone or some entity against whom one can gin up white-hot hate.So he settled on blaming S&P itself — the proverbial messenger — and who else? The evil tea party for the debt ceiling impasse. Pathetic. Oh, yes, and for good measure, his liberal colleague Rep. Barney Frank threw in the military and said he hopes the downgrade will force large military spending cuts.An unrepentant Geithner immediately took the offense and insultingly attacked S&P for its decision to downgrade our credit rating. "I think S&P's shown really terrible judgment. And they've handled themselves very poorly, and they've shown a stunning lack of knowledge about basic U.S. fiscal budget math."S&P's managing director, David Beers, didn't receive the slander sitting down. He said he had "absolutely" no second thoughts about the decision. He also said it was a gross exaggeration to suggest that the downgrade was mainly responsible for the market sell-off, pointing to the extreme volatility of the market in the period preceding the downgrade.Consider also the arrogance of this administration for lecturing anyone else about his budgetary acumen. We've not experienced a financial train wreck in our national history so directly traceable to the White House. There is no question Republicans bear some degree of blame for all of this, but Obama (and his party) has ratcheted up spending to an entirely new level of profligacy. His deficits are three times those of his predecessor and 10 times the Bush deficit of 2007. If you still have doubts about Obama's monumental spending increases, please review this graph: But this spending orgy is only our second-greatest problem, because spending — discretionary and entitlement — is reversible if the political will exists to make it happen. The greatest problem we have is a stubborn, defiant lack of will on the part of President Obama and his Democrats to join Republicans in implementing the reforms. This nation is in quicksand because of its spending, but we've got a chief executive and his party preventing Republican reformers from extricating it.Obama has no idea how to govern or lead — beyond leading us into financial disaster. His forte is campaigning and propaganda. He still hasn't presented a plan but has instead chosen to generally call for more taxes on the "wealthy" and — incredibly — more "stimulus" spending. For perspective, the Congressional Budget Office's latest projected 10-year deficit is estimated to be some $13 trillion, whereas Obama's vaunted tax on the rich would only bring in $1 trillion — and this assumes no growth-smothering effects of raising rates. But Obama knows only class warfare and blame projection. How convenient for Obama that the tea party forced a debt ceiling showdown on which he could blame the downgrade. But if it weren't for the tea party's efforts, we still probably wouldn't have turned the national conversation to our spending and debt crises. Congress wouldn't have initiated even the reductions in the rates of spending (euphemistically called "cuts") that we've seen this past year. The debt ceiling showdown was a positive development because it focused the national spotlight on our debt picture and the president's refusal to join the problem-solvers instead of continuing as the problem-maker in chief.More and more Americans are coming to realize that our three humongous problems — runaway unsustainable discretionary spending, insanely unsustainable and exponentially exploding unfunded entitlement liabilities, and a lifeless economy — are mostly Obama's fault. But more importantly, they are coming to see that our far greater problem is his (and his party's) abject refusal — as evidenced yet again in his disgraceful speech Monday — to make the government live within its means.....'

so the author found some college town lefties who labelled tea partiers "terrorists". surprise!
then, in an article titled "the left has no humanity", the left is criticized for failing to dialogue with the right. who is this sane, rational right the left should be talking to? the commenters on this forum. the people who make lists beginning "a liberal believes..." and "the left thinks..." and comes up with a laundry list of ridiculous and vile statements? or this author who concludes "the left has no humanity"? i have many friends, right and left. i share certain values with all of them, including patriotism, community pride, the value of hard work, and the importance of family. my friends on the right, however, are least likely to acknowledge that political opponents share values or proper motivations. they are most likely to cling to pre-ordained postitions in the face of conflicting or new facts. they are more likely to demonize opponents.

YeloStalyn| 8.10.11 @ 12:18PM

I hate to break it to you but the right (rule of law, freedom over equality) and the left (rule of mob, equality of outcomes over freedom) are mutually exclusive.
If you get down to brass tacks wth "people on the right" who share values with people on the left, they are usually moderates at best, or just ashamed of being more liberal than conservative.
Sure, there may be things along the way that are simliar (we both want to end poverty, for example) but that doesn't mean we have shared values. A liberal values control of others so that they can force people to end poverty. A conservative values freedom and respects the choices that people make, and tries to encourage them to make better ones and get out of poverty themselves. Those two things are mutually exclusive.

Mr. Goldstein: How can you complain about how "Liberal" treat and talk about Tea Partiers with no respect. Have you ever read the comments about Obama and the comment some of the "correspondents" about Obama and Liberals? He and they have been called Communists, Socialists, Fascists, Muslims etc. etc just to name a few. Keep in mind: He is OUR President whether you like it or not. He received 54% of the popular vote when he won the election and his popularity is the highest of any 1st term president since Kennedy.

simon templar| 8.9.11 @ 10:41PM

Perhaps you should read about Mr. President's backround, educational history, mentors, family history, books, alliances, friends, and past statements, then you will understand exactly why conservatives and others are calling him a socialist, communist, etc. Of course he is not Stalin nor a chinese communist. He is an American progressive that identifies with socialist aims and socialist doctrine and believes that our constitution is deeply flawed and our economic system unjust. Does that make it a little more clearer for you? Yes, we do not like it and do not have to like it and in 2012 we will do everything possible to see him out of office. His popularity is tanking and people are wakimg up to his incompetence and his socialistic agendas.
That is something you wull need to face whether you like it or not.

YeloStalyn| 8.10.11 @ 12:24PM

What terrorist activity or ideology did the Tea Party do or express? If you can answer that, then you can claim they are terrorists.

What did Obama do or idea did he express that is communist/socialist? These are paraphrases, but the real quotes aren't far off "Spread the wealth", "I know that raising these taxes will reduce government revenue. I don't want to do it for revenue, I want to do it because it's 'fair'", he bought a private company and controlled it (GM), he forces companies to work with unions rather than free market forces of labor and employers (Boeing and the SC plant), he pals around with Andy Stern who said, "Workers of the world unite... it's not just a saying anymore.", he said himself that he sought out and hung out with commies in college, his parents were commies and raised him as such, etc....
That's why we can say he's a commie and should be ousted.
