Congressman Allen West and I have mutual friends. When he won
election in November 2010, his phone number was given to me by
someone who thought I would be a good fit working for him as a
writer and spokesman. We had a pleasant conversation and he
suggested I send my curriculum vitae to his chief of staff. At the
end of the day I held back, leery of being pulled back into a life
of hectic schedules marked by frequent crises.
Now I wonder if I made the right choice, because he needs
some sane, loyal defenders in his camp. Instead I guess we have to
settle for second best; namely, getting him some sane, loyal
defenders outside his camp.
A little background is in order. The Congressman first
came to national attention as Lieutenant Colonoel Allen West.
During the Iraq War, the Lieutenant Colonel was questioning a
recalcitrant terrorist who was not forthcoming with information
about planned attacks in the area. To stimulate the gentleman’s
recollection, the Lieutenant Colonel was said to have fired his
weapon into a metal garbage can to create some cacophonous
acoustics. This was not to the taste of some of his more genteel
superiors and he was in hot water for a time.
When the Lieutenant Colonel resumed civilian life in South
Florida, he announced for Congress as a conservative Republican.
The seat he targeted includes Fort Lauderdale and some of its
beachside environs, as far north as parts of the Palm Beaches. It
had been held for many years by Republican Clay Shaw, who voted
conservative except where money for seniors was involved. Shaw
began winning by narrower margins as more Jews from the Northeast
relocated into the area. Liberal Jews in state politics were
salivating for that slot, which they thought rightfully
theirs.
His slimmest victory came in 2000, when just such a
politician, Elaine Bloom, was ahead in the tally from about the
time CBS called Florida for Al Gore. Shaw refused to concede
because he was down by a thousand votes or so with fifteen thousand
military ballots uncounted, so he said a smiling goodnight at 2
A.M. and went to bed. Bloom angrily gave her victory speech anyway,
which I wound up watching because the Presidency was still
unsettled. Before twenty-four hours had passed, Shaw was declared
the winner by several thousand.
Shaw held on until 2006, when another pol who fit the
profile took him down as part of the Democrat takeover of the
House. This fellow, Ron Klein, won using the time-dishonored
approach of running nonstop ads about how his opponent wanted to
feed dog food to local seniors to leave more money for his
corporate fat-cat friends — a style I like to call “quibbles and
bits.” Upon assuming the seat, Klein tried to be the inverse of
Clay Shaw, a social liberal with nods toward fiscal conservatism in
non-entitlement expenditures.
West took his first run at Klein in 2008, but the Obama
effect helped Klein to hang on. By this point, an alliance had
solidified between Klein and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, whose
district (Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, Davie) was contiguous to his
on its southwestern edge. DW-S, unlike Klein, is blissfully
impervious to nuance in her political thought. She is thoroughly
but not thoughtfully liberal, reflexively but not reflectively
liberal, deliberately but not deliberatively liberal,
contemptuously but not contemplatively liberal. She courageously
does interviews even with hostile hosts, but her responses
predictably consist of rewarmed pap.
When new political winds began to blow in 2010, the
Republican ticket went West and the Democrat ticket went south. In
the waning days of the campaign, DW-S spent a lot of her time
canvassing Klein’s district. Her own was secure, so she headed to
the abutting one and began to butt heads with West. An article
written by West had been reprinted in a motorcycle magazine, so she
organized a public demonstration to tie West to the crude macho
bile these testosterone-poisoned bikers spew. It was a low blow and
West escaped it by staying on the high ground.
Now DW-S has perpetuated her there-goes-the-neighborhood
vendetta against West. While he was absent from the chamber, she
used her speaking time in the House (using “incredulously” when she
meant “incredibly”) to lash out at West for backing the “cut, cap
and balance” bill which will, in her trite rhetoric, gut Medicare
yadda yadda yadda. West was offended that she violated the honor
code of Congresspeople against singling out colleagues for vitriol
in their absence. He dispatched an email calling her vile,
despicable and unprofessional, not a lady and unworthy of respect.
She reacted by publicizing the email.
Now he is being excoriated by all sorts of preux
chevalier types and soul sisters of DW-S for affording her
such disrespect. DW-S is a bigger shot these days, because she was
recently elevated to the chairwomanship (did I put an extra
i in that word?) of the Democrat National Committee. The
elites in Washington Ditzy are lining up with her hyphen against
his adjectives. So it falls to a dashing man-in-the-street,
man-about-town, man-of-the-world, man-for-all-seasons type like
myself to defend him with hyphens to spare.
After all, there but for the grace of God go I. Had he
hired me to write those emails, the language would have been far
more caustic.

As a proud constituent of Alan West I applaud him for calling this witch out. I am however disgusted by the lack of support he seems to be getting from his gutless Republican colleagues. Why must the conservative media be the only ones to speak out for him!

Something seems to happen to people when they get inside the Beltway. I don't know if they start drinking the untreated water from Blue Plains (sewage treatment plant for those not from the area) or if they fall prey to the power fairies that constantly whisper in politicians ears. The best one can hope for is to keep sending the good ones back and throw out the bums. I really believe that over half of the elected in DC are either ignoring the massive build up of anger in the hinter lands or are in complete denial of what is happening in 'fly over land'.

On the other, we have a FAT *SS with a BIG MOUTH. A Far Left PIG, who spouts her LIES about GOOD PEOPLE, who actually LOVE THIS COUTRY, as she DEFENDS a Man who's HATRED for this Country, he sees, as a BIRTH RIGHT.
As for his Spineless Republican "Colleagues"?

And, with good reason.
HAIL, Colonel West.

True story: My dad was a career Army reservist (was on active duty for the entire duration of WWII). Towards the end of his career in the 1960's, he was recovering from hernia surgery in an Army hospital. One of the young nurses called him Lieutenant. He politely reminded her that his rank was Lieutenant Colonel, not Lieutenant. She asked him what's the difference? He said, "Well the difference is this. The other day you had a Navy Rear Admiral in here. You wouldn't call him REAR, would you?"

When dealing with terrorist, Allen West knew that you had to speak a language they understood. Terrorists see no problem with killing innocent women and children to achieve their goals. Kid gloves will not work with such people.
Dealing with Democrats (and their lackeys in the media) is the same way. They don't understand respect. They do understand (and do not like) being called out for what they are. Republicans should never stoop to liberal tactics of physically or emotionally assault, but call things as they are and pull no punches. Bullies never stop until you stand up to them.

Paul Hilsenrath| 7.22.11 @ 8:05AM
Debbie Wasserman-Schmutz as some of the locals like to call her, is potentially facing an existential career crisis. The fact, that has not been widely reported is, that she may, due to re-districting, have to face West in 2012.
This may explain, in part ( the other part being she is a Pelosi clone), the attack. She also suffered a real existential threat last year, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had mastectomy surgery, (somewhat ironic for someone who is a fervent Obamacare supporter and the restrictions it envisions for among other things mamograms), this event may have further unhinged her.
Even a cornered rodent will get up on its hind legs and attack when threatened with being eradicated.
There you have it.
Best regards,

The thing that really disturbs me the most about that Debbie Wasserflangeler-Dultz is (Or whatever her name is?), she's got a deeper voice than I do (I think she's a baritone, maybe even bass?). I always find myself staring at her neck, when she's giving an interview to see if I see if there's something moving there. Creepy!! Whoever picked her? as the Chairwoman? of the DNC, did us a big favor, the only better choice would've been that Vampire Pelosi-Bat. The two of them just make you want to send the Democrats money, huh? Either send them money, or run away from them screaming!!
I'm also wondering what LT COL West said to the Black Congressional Caucus in the last few days to make them shut their mouths about the comments he made in this E-mail? I think he's got something on them already? At first I was pissed that he joined up those Commies (and every single one of them is a Commie, or at least almost all of them are?), but now I'm rethinking my position. I think he's invaded them, and he's already winning the War against them from within. Debbie Wasserman-etc. is my Congressman. She's also Allen West's Congressman, by the way. Both West and I live in a gerrymandered skinfold a stone's throw out of West's own district. Wasserman, etc. is the very model of a modern major Bolshevik apparatchik, a creature of the Party, by the Party and for the Party. That would be the so-called Democrat Party.
Getting rid of her in the 2012 elections is a worthy goal, as is insuring Allen West's re-election. You can do many things to make this happen.
One, support the persistent and valorous Republican challenger to the Wasserman-etc. throne: local restaurateuse Karen Harrington.
Two, help me shake the my fellow South Florida Jews loose from the slavish devotion to all things Democrat and progressive. Unlike Jay Homnick, you can join the meetup.com group Jews for Allen West. I wish Jay would join it this time around. The group got no traction in the 2010 election cycle, but I still think that's because I did such a lousy job publicizing it.
You most definitely do NOT have to be Jewish to join.
If we get Debbie Wasserman-etc. voted out in 2012, the electoral map of South Florida will flip red in a big, big way. Territorial contiguity, people. Territorial contiguity. We'll have the oceanfront and the interior, too. Atlantic to the 'Glades.
From there, it's On To Berlin!

I would say I loved the comments even more than the article. I LOVE Lt. Col. Alan West. He's a real MAN and he says what he means.
I totally agree with southrngirl77. We are ready for someone who is not afraid to speak the truth. I'm so sick of all this pussy footing around in Washington. Say it, dammit!
I agree that the R's aren't giving us much to vote for. And what the heck are they waiting for? Some of the people running are good people, but they are not going to energize the base. And I certainly don't want another wishy-washy McCain type.

As for LTC West, I'll be his battle buddy anytime.
Paul Kotik| 7.22.11 @ 10:37AM
Practicing Jews tend NOT to vote Democrat. The more observant a Jew is, the less likely he is to vote Democrat. The very religious sector of the Jewish community is staunchly conservative and votes Republican. If only there were more of them!
As to why the overwhelming majority of ( relatively or totally non-observant) Jews slavishly vote Democrat - friend, if you can solve that mystery and enable a way to change it, your achievement will resound through future ages.

I can't look at that hard faced harridan and relentless virago, Debbie Wasserman Shultz, with out thinking of that line about Sarah Jessica Parker from the hilarious South Park episode, "The Tale of Scrotie McBooggerbals."
In the cartoon scene her husband, Mathew Broderick, is being interviewed while she stands in the background. A reporter then asks, "Who is that transvestite donkey witch standing behind you and why is it wearing a dress?"
Harridan: 1700, "one that is half Whore, half Bawd" ["Dictionary of the Canting Crew"]; "a decayed strumpet" [Johnson], from Fr. haridelle "a poore tit, or leane ill-favored jade,"

George True| 7.22.11 @ 2:25PM
Lt Col West is the real deal. A totally squared away military officer, combat veteran, and a super patriot who understands the constitution. We could do no better than him.
Colonel West used an unconventional interrogation tactic on a recalcitrant Iraqi policeman who was actually an Al Qaida operative. West was sure this individual was withholding information about ambushes that were being planned for his troops. When he fired off the gun right behind him, this guy spilled his guts and the ambushes were thwarted before they came to fruition.
West said when it came to the lives of his soldiers, he would do anything to protect them. And if he had to , he would do it all over again, even though it landed him in hot water. This is exactly the kind of guy we need leading this country.
Trinacria| 7.22.11 @ 3:01PM
"Had he hired me to write those emails, the language would have been far more caustic."
Had he hired you to write those e-mails, I suspect they would have been far more eloquent (and - not to split hairs - grammatically correct). I'm as conservative as they come, but being conservative doesn't mean swearing blind allegiance to anyone with an "R" before his/her name. Fact is, this guy is an intellectual light weight and, frankly, an embarrassment. Disagree? OK - ask yourself this question: could you imagine Ronald Reagan writing a poorly conceived and poorly written rant against another politician in which he called her out for "not being a lady" (the truth of the statement notwithstanding...)? Of course not, because Reagan knew that it would be an undignified response that ill-befits an individual who has been given the privilege of speaking not only for himself, but for those who had elected him. He would have been smart enough to see the big picture and realize that such an approach would yield no constructive outcome.
West is applauded by some as someone who "isn't afraid to speak his mind". The reality is that he's a simple, unrefined, hothead who doesn't have the maturity and wisdom to know when "speaking his mind" is not in his (and his constituents') best interest.
Mike 3/505| 7.22.11 @ 4:35PM
Don't know about Reagan, but Winston Churchill would have called her ugly in addition to not being a lady. He would have been right on both counts.
George True| 7.22.11 @ 8:21PM
Trinacria: Obviously, you have never heard Colonel West speak. He can speak extemporaneously (without notes or teleprompter) for an extended period of time. He is unusually well-spoken, eloquent, and erudite in his speaking. More so than anybody I have heard speak in quite some time, he displays a firm grasp of complex issues, and is quite good at distilling them down into their core elements, thus helping the audience to understand them.
Contrast this to Obama who, contrary to the MSM narrative, is unable to speak intelligently or eloquently in any kind of unrehearsed way, and who is lost without his teleprompter. It is also apparent from his speaking that he does not grasp even relatively simple issues, let alone complex ones.
To set the record straight, the unprincipled, uncouth, and classless DWS is the one who started this by making an unwarranted and also untrue personal attack against West on the floor of the US Congress. Frankly, she IS a vile and reprehensible POS, and she certainly has shown on multiple occasions that she is NOT a lady. West was merely stating an indisputable fact.
Colonel West IS an officer and a complete gentleman. He is also someone who will not suffer fools like DWS. He is as refined a gentleman as there is. He also speaks plainly, and calls people out on their contemptible behavior when it is warranted, as it so richly was in this case. Commiecrats don't like it when their indefensible behavior is denounced for exactly what it is. You could learn something from this, if you are willing to pull your head out of your posterior.

For readers above who question Allen West's "intemperate" remarks in Congress and behavior in Iraq - - at least we know he WAS in Iraq and what he did, unlike most lawmakers, who lie about their service to get elected.
I have heard him speak on several occasions. I was struck by his ability to say what he has to say without larding it with "at the end of the day" and "the reality is" and all the other fillers his colleagues fall back on. The most notable I ever heard was, "We'll draw that line in the sand when we come to it." Joe Biden, if I recall.
Mark Shepler | 7.23.11 @ 10:44AM
I live in Allen West's district having moved here from Wasserman-Schultz's where I lived for 12 years from '88-'92 as her career began and evolved. Prior to that and since I have lived my whole life in and around her district. Back then I was lobbying for FL's largest chapter of the state's insurance agent's association, Miami's, and met with her and her mentor, Peter Deutsch, several times. He was a duplicitous state Rep., she his earnest young aide. She ran and won Deutsch's seat when he ran for State Sen. in '92 at the tender age of 26. She subsequently rose to State Sen. and then Congress for her same district by filling vacancies left by Deutsch as he climbed the ladder.
Homnick nails many of the particulars but I would add that her district, FL's 20th, is an intentionally and equisitely drawn district covering some of Broward Co's (Ft. Lauderdale area) wealthiest and idiosyncratic neighborhoods from gated white liberal suburbs, retiree conclaves, to black neighborhoods to Ft. Lauderdale's substantial gay areas. For political tone, an apt comparison is Nancy Pelosi's fiefdom. In short, Homnick is absolutely correct, her entire political career and experience has been in an atypical, fiercely liberal political hothouse in which no serious intellectual, ideological or practical challenge to her worldview has or will surface. The district is forever safe to its possessor so long as they know, nay, truly believe the left's catechism.
By contrast I knew little about West except remembering reading about his exploits in Iraq and subsequent persecution for them in the McCarthyite aftermath of the Abu Gharib withhunt. I didn't know he was from S. Florida and was very pleased when he popped up as a candidate in my own district. I admire him as much for his intellectual rigor and courage as for his past service. He certainly got and will get my vote. Homnick shades over some interesting facts about West's district.
It too was exquisitely drawn to protect Clay Shaw, who I also met several times and even helped with a fundraiser. The 22nd District begins down in Broward interlocking with DWS's but then extends up the very coastline 70 miles to Jupiter, well beyond Palm Beach, in some stretches covering only the ribbon of barrier islands beyond the intracoastal waterway. It reaches inland in three places that are mostly conservative. Coastal neighborhoods tend to the liberal but not always. Some, like my own Jupiter, are conservative from the water's edge to us rural folks nine miles inland. So the 22nd is a mixed bag and was suited to Shaw who was a Republican of the old-school, country club kind. Affable, friendly, soft-spoken he was a good soldier of the Bob Dole stripe and would be totally inadequate to this moment of crisis. Klein lost to West mainly because he forgot about everyone outside his Boca Bubble. That and some especially nasty campaign tricks like "inadvertently" publishing West's family SS numbers in an ad.
I believe West will do better next Nov. than conventional wisdom allows, even in liberal bastions like Boca Raton. Not because those oh-so-enligtened folks will suddenly take to an assertive schwartza but because the district overall leans to the conservative and the times call for conservatism. How much more so next year when nothing, NOTHING, has gotten any better? Even all of Boca is not that reliably liberal. West Boca is full of middle-class, entrepreneurial, small business owning Jews and others who talk liberalish but often vote sanely, especially when they perceive themselves in the crosshairs as they are as never before. I also believe that as time wears on and the legitimacy of Washington word games finally, thankfully wears off to all but the most oblivious Americans plain speaking candidates will do better and better.
As for Wasserman-Schultz, I said it back in April upon her ascension to the DNC chair and since. Given her nature and stunted, insulated political experience and thought she is guaranteed to entertain and delight so long as the Democrats can stand it. So why did Obama pick her for the job? This is a quote from Representative Allen West of Florida, note the use of the term Marxist. As with Debbie, he calls them like he sees them. This gentlemen needs to be on the Republican ticket in 2012.
“The President’s concern is about getting reelected. The President’s concern is that he is an intransigent, liberal, progressive socialist who is also Marxist because of the class warfare rhetoric that he espouses. And I think that when you heard him on Friday and the more he comes out and talks, the more truly out of touch and incompetent he seems.
He has a vision for this country that is anathema to the vision of the founding fathers and our belief in individual responsibility and accountability and our free enterprise system.”

There is no way she is most vile member of Congress as long as Sheila Jackson Lee is there. She is definitely in the top five. Maxine Waters, Janice Hahn and Nancy Pelosi make this a very tough competition. Democratic women are a very vile group when you come to think of it. I will give Mr. West the benefit of the doubt concerning his over statement. A bigger mystery is how President Obama found her cute.
