A Further Perspective

Declaration of Independents

Success is the one thing that won’t spoil Republicans.

“I wanted to be a thug but my problem is I am ticklish. You can’t be a thug if you start giggling…”
— Malik S., Popular Miami Comedian

“I took out an English teacher once. That did not work out real well. I sent her a love note and she corrected it.”
— Rodney Dangerfield, Back to School

That unique but ubiquitous gift for the Man-Who-Has-Everything, naming a star after him, always held my fascination. Looking up into the galaxies and seeing the effervescent glimmer of Thelma Rogers of Peoria, Illinois, alongside the scintillating gleam of Louis Bernstein of Poughkeepsie, New York, I beheld the merger of vastness and crassness, the universe and the anniversary. Politics is a lot like this, I thought: a bunch of people decide you get to be the next star and then you have to do the best you can not to fall out of the sky.

Even as Obama seems to be spiraling downward, one guy who seems to have an entire constellation of his own is Governor Christie. (Come to think of it, there is a religion named after him already.) He has become a meatier darling, and much sought after by journalists. Last Sunday he Met The Press and was not treated as an outlaw. They put down the billy club and put on kid gloves.

He explained how he has achieved his legislative successes and humbly recommended that Obama follow his model. Get everyone in the room, speak from the heart and find common ground. Brilliant insights these, which leads one to wonder what he believes on other matters of import. For instance, does a stitch in time save nine? Is a bird in the hand worth two in the bush? Does absence make the heart grow fonder? The list of possible fronts where his brand of enlightenment may be plied is limitless.

What Christie and his lionizers forget is that he is a Republican and a Republican can only succeed by succeeding. If the reforms he has initiated in his home state do not balance its budget over time, he will put on the new jersey of private citizenship after the next election. Obama, on the other hand, is a Democrat and Democrats can succeed by failing. He can organize the American community right into the poorhouse and still be rewarded for his good intentions by reelection.

The math computes thusly. Democrats and Republicans do not decide elections; Independents do that job. The traditional expectation is that each party gets 40 percent of the vote and the indies bring the deciding 20. The question then becomes: how do Democrats get Independent votes and how do Republicans get them? I think the answer is that Democrats can draw them with dreams but Republicans can only retake them by producing results.

Take health care as an issue. The Democrat view is that government should be the one to manage it even if it cannot do the best job. The Republican view is that government has no business managing it even if it could do the best job. The Independent splits the difference. He is not too sure he wants the government mixing into his health care but if you can convince him they can do it better he is prepared to shrug off the principles and the Constitutional orthodoxy.

Right now, these middle-of-the-road guys have swung back to Republican because they see the Democrat dreams are not having happy endings. Guys like Christie are getting their votes. But they take those votes for granted at their own peril. Those are not gifted but leased. If the economies of those states where the Republican skinflint governors practice their budget economies do not respond, the Independents will follow the Sirens again.

It is nice to see Christie’s situation produce such comity, but politics is still a reality show and much drama lies ahead. And I hate to say this, but I must add yet another cautionary note: if Christie and Scott Walker are not obviously successful in their states by mid-2012, not only will Republican Governors start losing, Obama might cash in as well. Republicans must remember that a thug cannot be ticklish and their love notes to an English teacher will be corrected. They will succeed to the Presidency only if they succeed.

Perhaps Christie will win-- the nomination and the election. But why is it you had 2/3 of 2008 to find someone better than McCain yet you flubbed it as in '96?

lydia | 7.1.11 @ 8:45AM

Republicans are the wife reminding them of their umbrella; Dems are the floozy who entices them with promises of a good time. In the excitement, they ignore the past history of hangovers, crabs, and that look on their wife's and kid's face.

A threesome with Bill? Lydia DID mention crabs, hangovers, and the look on your wife's and kids' faces. No one has picked up Monica Lewinsky as far as I know. And Monica is only 37.

Bob| 7.2.11 @ 9:56AM

Christie will win a Neptune Beach hot dog eating contest hands down.

oldfart| 7.1.11 @ 6:43AM

For the past 40 years they only thing the Dems seem to know is how to demonize the opposition. 'If you don't agree with me you are racist, warmonger, not for the children, self centered , etc, etc, etc (pick your word of choice). Like the French Revolution - you only have to charge someone with a crime to find them guilty. That story is tired, boring and very very old. Like listening to a one note song and everyone, at first, is going - ooh - aah - ooh - aah. They are so yesterday. LOL

LindaF | 7.1.11 @ 8:17AM

I do have to agree with part of this. The Dems just have to "inspire" their people, and they'll suck in a lot of the Indy vote. The Republicans have to have proven results, and the Indys may still listen to the siren song of the Dems.

Republicans are the wife reminding them of their umbrella; Dems are the floozy who entices them with promises of a good time. In the excitement, they ignore the past history of hangovers, crabs, and that look on their wife's and kid's face.

We just have to time our pitch to the day after that boozy party, when they're sober, and miserable enough, to listen to common sense.

Stormzeye| 7.1.11 @ 11:08AM

The reason liberals only have to "inspire" is that they are dealing with a constituency that believes in hope, change, unicorns, dreams of what could be, rainbows, etc. Arguably, they are in the grips of a mental illness. Conservatives however look to history for answers to today's problems. They cite proven fact and demonstrated outcomes adjusted for current circumstances. This is by far the only rational and reasonable approach to problem solving and will appeal to "independents" when they become frightened by the fruits of liberalism and out of necessity turn for comfort to the sensibility of conservative solutions.

Al Adab| 7.1.11 @ 11:36AM

The Left operates on an emotional basis and worships "tolerance" "diversity" and so on. Conservatives take a rather more analytical approach and worship "Liberty" and personal responsibility rather than a collective. They treat people as individuals rather than as members of a class or group. The political ramifications of the difference are massive.

Nunya| 7.1.11 @ 6:34PM

Al, well said. Leftists tend to see the people as a whole--"the good of the group" so to say, so it is easy to promote an agenda that is "good for the majority". We on the right tend to see things more in line with the individual, and what an individual can accomplish--not so much what the group is doing. Unfortunately, our children have been indoctrinated with groupthink, and so the leftist's agenda is more easily accomplished. Fewer people thinking critically is a key to their success, and everyone's sense of what's "fair" is also a tool that is used against us by those who would control us.

In every dictatorship or oligarchy there are always some who are more equal than others...

Diana| 7.1.11 @ 9:06AM

Governor Christie is too fat and unattractive. You talk about Independent voters Christie will lose the female vote. Women want their President trim, fit and healthy not a barrage balloon. Christie would lose his home state and the general election because females don't like his physical apperance and therefore won't vote for him.

Steve A| 7.1.11 @ 10:06AM

Diana, God help the poor bastard who must suffer pretending to listen to you for the rest of his life.

Gary| 7.3.11 @ 10:55AM

Very funny, Steve.

Stormzeye| 7.1.11 @ 11:01AM

Diana, you make a good case for the error of women's suffrage.

Nunya| 7.1.11 @ 6:36PM

Agreed. I saw a study once that said that women tend to vote Democrap something like 70% of the time. Ann Coulter said she would give up the right to vote if it meant never having another communist in the white house....

Bob| 7.2.11 @ 10:00AM

Don't knock the lady, if Christie wins the GOP nomination, 80% of females will vote against the bulbous one.

Kelly | 7.5.11 @ 11:30PM

HAHA! I am a female and I thought this was a perfect response! I hear my dad say so often that if you look back to the photos of the women at the women's lib rallies, you'll see why they pushed so hard for "equal rights." Diana- those women were mostly dogs. Should they have been ignored? Nope. Well, yes, but for other reasons. Think before you speak. You make all women look like superficial idiots. I am 32, intelligent, funny as hell, cute, and I do not vote according to waistline. I've never been to Jersey and now I really don't want to go there. Apparently most folks from New Jersey really are as simple as the morons on Jersey Shore. To be completely honest, Christie is attractive because he has a brain and he's sharp, which is so rare these days. I'll take Christie any day over Mark Dayton in Minnesota.

pigletrios| 7.1.11 @ 11:09AM

LMAO - I think you will find that the American female is smarter than that! All I care about is the intelligence and character of a person. Not the color or beauty of his/her skin.

NJ Kay| 7.1.11 @ 11:13AM

I agree, the Governor needs to reduce the pork rinds and milkshakes and start eating more broccoli and brussel spouts. The broccoli will improve his brain functioning as well and brother does he need that.

NJ Kay| 7.1.11 @ 11:31AM

Teddy and Bill, cute and chubby rascals, but the Governor has the problem of exogenous obesity and is not cute at all or brainy as Teddy and Bill.

Patrick| 7.2.11 @ 5:55AM

Yes, Ted with his head to belly gin blossoms were really cute.

So, how's the School Teacher's Union doing?

Occam's Tool| 7.1.11 @ 3:03PM

So that's why you voted for Clinton?

Al Adab| 7.1.11 @ 5:24PM

See Occam, only The Left is smart. The rest of us are simply red-neck reactionarys.

Red Route 1| 7.1.11 @ 5:59PM

Re Diana: So, by your own definition, women are shallow, superficial, illogical, irrational, emotional and stupid?
Betty Friedan ( i.e. Bettye Naomi Goldstein) must be turning in her grave.

Gary| 7.3.11 @ 11:00AM

Red Route 1,

If they were rational, logical, unemotional and smart, wouldn't the National Organization for Women denounce the barbaric treatment of Muslim women around the world and also here at home?

Just askin'...

Dai Alanye | 7.1.11 @ 9:29AM

Thank you, Mr Homnick, for seeing things as they are. Independents generally lack strong political principles, and tend to be ruled by conventional wisdom. They aren't happy about excessive debt and dislike a failing economy, thus are anti-Obama at present.

Threats to individual liberty and the dangers of socialism are too theoretical for most of them. If the economy were to suddenly improve their enthusiasm for the likes of Christie or any other Republican would fade away in a heartbeat.

scotchieguy| 7.1.11 @ 9:43AM

The only difference between dems and repubs is the dems still believe in Santa Claus. That is why they nominate such horrible candidates--Obama, Kerry, Gore, Clinton. etc.

Patrick| 7.2.11 @ 5:58AM

And this solves why we nominated McCain, either of the Bushes, and Dole to boot? Methinks there's plenty of TINSTAAFL deniers in the Republican Party as well.

Melvin| 7.1.11 @ 11:22AM

Michelle Obama forces her husband to eat all those green goodies and to be frankly honest I haven't seen any boost in mental prowess yet.
By the way Ted Kennedy was fat, and the Democrat women were cool with that, in fact they even found the Tedster sexy. Come to think of it another rotund Democrat was Bill Clinton, and Democrat females were having wet dreams with his visage.

Patrick| 7.2.11 @ 5:59AM

Those gin blossoms really bring out your eyes....

David Shoup| 7.4.11 @ 7:35PM

Right as rain, Melvin. I read an expose by a man who worked as a Teddy Kennedy staffer for 10 years. Part of his job was arranging private "meetings" with Ted for attractive young women who would show up at the Senator's office for a quickie with him. Why doesn't that happen to me? :-)

Claudia Monteverdi| 7.1.11 @ 12:56PM

Dear Jay,
Now THAT fits my definition of a Will O'the Wispy coulumn, nonetheless (or does one say nonetheless?) , amidst all the genttle toe treads and clever ad-hominems and meatierish tidbits of genuinely swell analysis of the (what a revelation) proportion of dem\rep\ind voters and a quasi plaintive to rep office holders cum seekers to produce or face the guillotine..all swell stuff, I see one sentence......" if Christie and Scott Walker etcetera etcetera........" Now this bundle of sweet garbage earned your otherwise algonquin round table words a resounding "F"..please remember she grades you my love.....to actualy separate the massively (take that adverb as you will I beg the lady above who complained about his ugly blobs of faat) capable, intelligent, bold straight thinking, warrior Christie with that pusilanimous punk pretender Walker..just ain't good Jay.....I know not what course others might take (a course in English grammar and spelling might help I guess) but as for me, Give me CHRISTIE AND RUBIO 2.012, or give me...whatever...(death seems a wee bit harsh) get it?
with oceans of love, I remain,
Yours truly,
Claudia

Patrick| 7.2.11 @ 6:32AM

You may be a fan of Christie, however you are sadly lacking in knowledge outside of that particular devotion.

Scott Walker is not bombastic, which seems to be your favorite attribute in a Republican. He does not shout down his opponents nor does he seek to brutalize his enemies with outbursts and tirades. Even so, he has faced the full weight of the Democratic Party's union-goon and welfare-queen attack machine with unflappable decorum and unflinching resolution, and won.

As of yesterday, the single most powerful lobby in the state, that is public sector unions, their money, their hosts of dead and fictitious voters, their extortion tactics and boycotts, their constant marches and encampments upon the Capital have all failed utterly. The budget repair bill has been made law and the new state budget is passed.

Democrats in Wisconsin are wailing and gnashing their teeth at this very moment, because their screaming and tantrums have all amounted to absolutely nothing against the ponderous and unshakable march of austerity in this state.

What Scott Walker has managed to do in this state would have been beyond the wildest dreams of Republicans even in the halcyon days of Gov. Thompson. That he lacks Tommy's charisma while doing so is only further testament to his skill as a chief executive.

Oh, and for your information, Walker is further to the right than any of you can possibly imagine. That he chooses his battles carefully is not a sign of weakness.

Doctor Right| 7.1.11 @ 3:08PM

"He explained how he has achieved his legislative successes and humbly recommended that Obama follow his model. Get everyone in the room, speak from the heart and find common ground."

I'm sorry, but this is idiotic, and proof-positive that while Chris Christie may be a good Governor of New Jersey, he'd make a LOUSY President.

First of all..."speak from the heart"?? Um, excuse me, Chris, but Obama DOES speak from the heart...it's an empty, narcissistic heart, but it's his nonetheless, and it does guide his decisions.

WHY do RINOs (and Christie IS a RINO) persist in their belief that, by golly, Liberals are really just like us???

Here's a clue - they're NOT, and Obama is among the worst. He's a COMMITTED socialist ideologue, and no amount of hugging, squeezing, flattery, or playing footsy will EVER change that. Like all leftist thugs, he understands only one thing - brute force, be it political, or be it physical – and he won't back down unless he has to.

Additionally, Liberals are NOTHING like Conservatives. Liberals live in a fantasy world of their own making where everything they believe, if not an outright lie, has been proven to be demonstrably false, and yet they persist. They're petty, selfish, pig-headed, self-righteous, arrogant, obnoxious, uninformed, and all-around ignorant...But they own half the country, and won't rest until we're dead or on our knees.

There is NO common ground between Liberals and Conservatives.

We love our country and it's institutions; they don't.

It's that simple.

And if they protest and claim that they DO love their country, then ask them why they're constantly trying to "transform" it??? Like Obama...

John "Haircut" Edwards was right about one thing, although for the wrong reasons...there ARE two Americas. One consists of the makers, and the other consists of the takers.

Well, the makers have had about enough of the takers' crap.

I see nothing in our future that will heal this divide except the division of this country a' la East and West Germany.

In less than a year, most of the dim-wits who chose "The People's Republik of Amerika" would be trying to cross-over the border into the side governed by genuine Constitutional principles...

...and we should give them all a sandwich and a bottled water, and send their miserable asses back where they belong.

Can you tell I've had a long week???

SICK of this crap.

Stupid Christie...

Claudia Monteverdi| 7.1.11 @ 5:45PM

My Dear Doctor Right..
since you admit that you have had "a very long week", and I shall hazard a guess that it was one well punctuated with demon rum and the like, Ishan't scold you for your lunacy in flagrante delitto...when you sleep it off, you will surely agree that Mr Christie is hardly what you so flippantly called a "RINO" and that.....
"He explained how he has achieved his legislative successes and humbly recommended that Obama follow his model. Get everyone in the room, speak from the heart and find common ground."......the above quote really does say it all as we learned from the Roman Senate, the various Sanhedri and even the Diet of Worms (my favourite)....it just is common sense when one considers the alternatives, dictatorshipor anarchy...Now Now, Doc, you're gonna be just fine,
Concerned for you,
Claudia

Just Joe| 7.2.11 @ 1:24PM

And, to cap it all off, I bet Christie's a damn Catholic! And you know you can't trust them.

Patrick| 7.3.11 @ 5:39PM

He is Catholic. Also, it's not 1920 anymore.

To my knowledge, while Dr. Right does loathe Catholicism, I have not noticed him making it a habit to pass that loathing onto individual Catholics.

After all, from a principled, conservative Protestant perspective, just because someone is "wrong" in the theological understanding of justification does not make his political philosophy and moral compass any worse in practice.

There are, in politics, good Calvinists and bad Calvinists, just as there are good Catholics and bad Catholics.

If a Baptist wants to carry a Pro-Life sign, pray with as many "just's" and "if's" as he wants outside an abortion mill, more power to him. I'm rather certain that the opposite is also applicable for the irritating things Catholics do when protesting abortion mills.

carol| 7.1.11 @ 3:39PM

duh
so we have success all over the place
that is what elected Christie ...success
wake up
TEA taxed enough already

PattyMor| 7.1.11 @ 3:52PM

Well folks I would like someone to be accomplished and have accomplished something before they run for Prez. How many of those Indies who voted for Obama know what a Community Organizer really is? Or that the "Bamster taught Rules for Radicals? I'm still waiting for Chris Wallace to ask the 'Bamster if he is a radical.

I really don't care if Chris Christie is fat or Sarah Palin is beautiful, so what? Can and will they balance a budget and tell the people who believe if fairydust and unicorns that there is no more money so their pet programs will be cancelled? And then withstand the wailing an gnashing of teeth on BOTH sides?

GeorgePQ| 7.1.11 @ 7:10PM

Let's face it the ladies above have a point. If Christie ran against Robert Redford in his prime, glamour or lack thereof in Christie's case would prevail as the chief issue and Christie would receive 10% of the female vote and glamour would destroy glamourless in a landslide.

Claudia Monteverdi| 7.2.11 @ 2:40PM

Dear Georgie,
You ain't too far from the truth..so why the hell did you give us the vote? But, Redford never had a "prime" and Christie just oozes sex appeal for us ideologues

Thom| 7.2.11 @ 9:21AM

People calling themselves “independents” are mostly Democrat voters who are more opportunists than the rest of the Democrat Party is. They generally don’t like the stench that goes along with where the Democrat Party has gone; they generally don’t like to be labeled because they are first and foremost unprincipled and opportunists. They are often unattached to what is going on politically around them and their primary motive at the ballot box is what’s in this for them. They often claim to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal while completely ignoring that the bulk of government spending and growth is social spending for which one cannot then claim to be fiscally conservative and vote for.

When “independents” ban together to form their own party, they then fall flat on their faces because the bulk of their positions are either a mix of both Parties they oppose and are in conflict with each other across a wide spectrum of issues or simply exclude the bulk of the electorate’s position on any issue.

Basically most “independents” simply buy into the candidate that promises them the most without regard to the intellectual honesty of said candidate or the political party he/she raises their banner under. The one thing “independents” as a group can be counted on for is to not vote the same way twice most of the time. An “independent” that can articulate a position consistent with the founding of this republic is rare. Finding one that has that same position the next month is even rarer.

Basically, “independents” are people who have no religious faith or guiding principles in life and detest anything that is judgmental in nature. They are like the man without a name in Clint Eastwood’s early movies. They see virtue in not being on either of the two teams and playing both against each other for their personal gain. Traditionally they are run over by that train wreck they helped make.

Yes, they do tend to determine the outcome of elections but that matters only as long as there is a viable political process that is effective at resolving real problems. We are rapidly approaching the point where politics cannot resolve any problem and most of the problems have been created by people voting Democrat. Playing kingmaker is at best a short term fantasy, power trip. The outcome of this train wreck is going to be wide spread and those that can’t find a consistent political position to hold onto for more than one election are going to find themselves exactly where that chicken finds itself in the middle of a busy highway does.

LibertyHawk| 7.2.11 @ 10:14PM

Most independents are liberals without the courage of their convictions, and don't want to be "labeled" ... much like the majority of our 'journalists' who pompously attempt to maintain the fiction of their impartiality in the misnomered propagandistic perversion called 'journalistic integrity'...

post*tenebras*lux| 7.4.11 @ 10:57AM

Amen and Amen Liberty Hawk, I'm sick of "independents". In my book, there is no such animal and it is a term that is used to the benefit of the liberals and RINOs to justify their deceptive acts of maliciousness against the American people who love freedom, who love America, and speaking of America, ain't she something?

martin j smith| 7.3.11 @ 8:16AM

I want to focus on the term " middle of the road guy " on the third of July. Exactly who are the " middle of the roaders". Well, let me take a stab at analyzing this term or phrase. Middle of the road could mean somewhere between LEFT AND RIGHT.
Now I think perhaps during my life time until the 2000 election it might be possible because till then we still had the Republican and Democrat(ic ? ) Parties. Why the 2000 election --that we the bru ha ha about the Supreme Court " deciding" who won. At least this is the Democrat ( Socialist mythology ) and from this point onward we have taken a very steady hard decline towards Political Polarization. But that means that the so called Democrat Party was "ready" even before that to make a serious move to the EXTREME LEFT.
Meanwhile back to the "middle of the roaders".
Now did they vote Obama ? Or McCaine and what do they think of BOTH of these characters now ?
McCaine I think typifies the "middle of the roader" point of view. He lost and his campaign, such as it was was terrible. He failed and his attempts to be civil and to be "fair minded" failed. Because what do we have now ? And here lies the problem with the "middle of the roader" attitude. If these kinds of voters believe that one make strike a "deal" or find "common ground" with the so called Democrat ( ic ) party from this point on wards then from from my perspective at best I would say that they are not in tune with reality--at least the one I see. That is we have "President" acting like a Dictator of the Soviet type ordering us about, destroying our Constitutional Government and essentially laying the basis of a one party system.

"Middle of the roaders would deny this" and if you do not then you are no longer a " midlde of the roader" and congratulations to you if you do see the light.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But for others, if you still like Mr. Huntsman for instance believe somehow the Socialists can be "reasoned with" I think you are very misguided at best.

We now live in a polarized world and every voter in this country must chose where they stand. In my oppinion, at this point in our history you either want to protect this country's Political Traditions ( I am not talking about Social issues necessarily here ) but Constitutional and Free Market economic system.

Deals made with Socialism will bring us a step closer to Socialism and that will end our History. Thus, I cannot support or vote for ANYONE who behaves like McCaine because we will end up in the same BAD PLACE may later but into Socialism
never the less.
I do condone indesvcriminate violence or any violence but I support Self Defence when Socialist use thuggury. Le t me give an example. You have picket line and opposition has one on the other side of the street. The Socialist send some there thugs to break you like. There is a need to fight back against this. This BROWN SHIRT TERRITORY. MIddle of the Roaders, you will have to chose. You cannot stand in the middle anymore.

martin j smith| 7.3.11 @ 8:24AM

I must add this: Chris Christie if he were to be President would be hard pressed to make "compromises" and would find that he would fail with this crop of SOCIALISTS. For, because he is working own world of NJ which is relatively local he is not exposed directly to the likes of Chuck Schumer or Dick Durban or Nancy Pelosi or their ilk. Waite till he faces them. He will have to chose.

Gary| 7.3.11 @ 11:07AM

Mr. Smith,

Most sixth graders know the difference between fair and unfair and between right and wrong. Reagan was pretty good at it, too.

The main job requirements for the White House is morality and the strength of character to stick to what's obviously right. With that as a guide, facing evil characters is simple. Just say, "No."

Gary| 7.3.11 @ 11:08AM

My grammar could be better, but you get my point.

martin j smith| 7.3.11 @ 8:43AM

Sorry --an error --I should have said--In my post about the "middle of the roader" not condone violence. Perhaps that was a Freudian slip-- but actually my hand and mind are very often not in synch.

martin j smith| 7.3.11 @ 11:37AM

Gary--I wish that is true about most people knowing right from wrong. Sadly in my view we have a segment of our population that sees "right" and "wrong" strictly from their Big business" perspective. That is the so called Independents. If the issue of "results" determine their vote, then the question to be asked is " what results and to what end" ? If by NOW these Independents still believe they must wait out the morass before deciding who they support then some how they believe that a crony capitalist deal can be salvaged with OBama in spite of all Obama has said and done. If this is the case, G-D help us and to the Independents I say we must fight for this nation with or without your help.

Le me be very specific: Class warfare. Th does apply to Independents and I will give you some who behave as if they are in that group. On Fox news : Chris Wallace, Neal Cavuto and of course you have David Brooks and Frum to name a few.

If people of this type believe that DEAL can be made with Obama then they are bigger fools than I even think and I do think they are big fools.

Gary| 7.3.11 @ 1:03PM

The theoretical purpose of government is to keep order in the land. The corrupt "practical" purpose of goverenment is to grant favors. Obama's stated purpose is to "fundamentally change America" into a Marxist wasteland. I think his goal is to win a trophy from the international leftist community.

If we had a president and an administration that was moral, crony capitalism wouldn't happen. It would be illegal.

Instead, we've had a procession of half-moral presidents up to, but not including, our current president. He's in a class by himself. He has no morals whatsoever.

martin j smith| 7.3.11 @ 2:06PM

Gary--I agree.

"A Republican can only succeed by succeeding. Democrats can succeed by failing." That is so clear and so right that it should be in the Bible's Book of Proverbs, Chapter 32. We have $14 TRILLION of failure, and Obama blames it on Bush. Actually, the big spenders in DC got their start during the 1960's Johnson Administration (and his War on Poverty; like Afghanistan at $100 BILLION a year, why don't we admit defeat and quit fighting the War on Poverty too). Johnson got his big spending ideas from Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who got his big spending ideas from John Maynard Keynes. And we and 3 generations of our descendants must now pay the price. UNLESS, yes, we do what William F. Buckley suggested: we sell off public assets and pay off the public debt. SUCH AN IDEA! We need not sell federal assets at bargain basement prices. We post stuff (land, gold, buildings, collectibles, etc) on the web at premium prices and drop the price 1% per week until we find a buyer. Then we take the proceeds and pay buy back Treasury Bills, Bonds, and Notes (and burn them) and fund the loans from Social Security too. THERE IS A GOD! Quite simple and painless really.

If we had a president and an administration that was moral, crony capitalism wouldn't happen. It would be illegal.
