This month is the fifth anniversary of the release of Al Gore’s
An Inconvenient Truth. The documentary film became a
sensation among the political left, the easily impressionable
segments of the public and a majority in Congress that was all too
eager to enact legislation to solve the global crisis.
The film won
an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature and the audio version
received a Grammy. For his efforts to save the planet, Gore
received the Nobel Peace Prize. This is a very good haul for a film
that grossed a rather paltry $23 million in domestic box office
receipts.
There is no denying that Gore and his film deserve the lion’s
share of the credit (or blame) for launching the wild hysteria to
combat “manmade global warming” that swept the nation in 2006.
The U.S. House of Representatives created an entirely new
committee “The Select
Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming” because
“global warming is an urgent problem that
requires action now” such as hastening the nation’s “transition
away from a fossil fuel-based economy.”
Congress passed legislation
banning incandescent light bulbs by 2014. Americans will soon
exclusively use CFL (curly-fry light) bulbs that will keep a home
as dimly light as a Third World hospital room.
On several occasions Congress was unsuccessful in enacting “cap
and trade” legislation that would be a
financial windfall for some groups but would also kill
thousands of American jobs. Common sense prevailed as the
legislation failed to move in Congress but, the Environmental
Protection Agency has threatened to implement the legislation via
regulatory edict.
After the film was released, a number of strange bedfellows
jumped onto the manmade global warming bandwagon. In one public
service announcement, Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich, who sat
together on a sofa like a pair
of love-struck lab partners before they were to head off to the
senior prom, demanded a solution to global warming.
A year later the always-evolving Gingrich would abandon his
newfound fossil-fuels-are-evil buddies and publish a book titled
Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less in which he advocates
pumping as much oil from the ground as is humanly possible.
Going Green became the catch phrase. There was a rush to
purchase hybrid vehicles such as the two-seat Honda Insight, the
impractical compact that is not much larger than a circus clown
car, and the overpriced Toyota Prius that has been plagued with
numerous battery and service problems.
The Discovery cable network launched Planet Green channel whose star
celebrity is Ed Begley, Jr. That’s right, who? That came on the
heels of NBC Universal airing “green” theme programming on its
stable of cable and broadcast channels during the month of April.
Even Time magazine offered a “Going Green” column. Green
expos, exhibits, conventions and bazaars popped up around the
country. Green was in.
Not content with his role as Chicken Little, Gore went on to
co-found
a “carbon credit” company that has made him millions. He even used
the carbon credit service for himself. He deems his extravagant,
high-energy
use home as being “carbon neutral” because he purchases “carbon offsets.”
From himself.
This review comes five years after the film’s original release
but, I confess the timing is only a mere coincidence. My primary
goal in watching the film was to determine if I was correct in what
I remembered of my 2006 viewing. I began to have doubts.
That is because practitioners of manmade global warming hysteria
have attempted to correct me again and again in recent years by
claiming Gore’s film was not about manmade global warming but,
instead, was about “climate change.” I had been told this so many
times that I had begun to doubt what I saw five years ago.
The catch-all phrase “climate change” happens to be politically
convenient because it allows manmade global warming enthusiasts to
deposit every single climate event (highs, lows, and the status
quo) into their CSI evidence bag as proof that man — particular
Western man and more specifically, American society — is evil and
is the cause of most of the world’s ills.

For this piece of dreck Gore got the Nobel Peace Prize - beating out another nominee that year, Irena Sendler, a Polish woman who saved 2,500 Jewish children during the Second World War. She was tortured and left for dead by the Gestapo, and later imprisoned by the Communist government.

CARBON CREDIT
I’d like to donate part of my own carbon credit
To one of the Gore households, where I’ll bet it
Could light a guest room for one whole day,
That’s all I can offer because I may
Have to use the rest to sustain my brood
For a year or more, though my guilt-filled mood
Tells me I’m selfish to put food on our table
When one of my betters might be able
To use it more wisely , more justly than I.
I’m torn apart realizing that my
Serving my family first might destroy the earth.
I’m shredded with shame, I’m doubting my worth.
Surely the wisdom of Leonardo Di Caprio
Should lighten my spirit instead of trap me so.
I’ll chew on my fingers, my clothes I’ll rend
Waiting for the world to end.
On the other hand I think this stuff is fluff
And with all of this hot air I’ve had enough…

Algore is a waste of skin, and is a lying, cheating, dirtbag . The man hyped up this "global warming" tripe to make himself rich. The history of the "carbon trade/carbon offsets" shows that he had met with executives from Enron (of all places) to determine how they had created a market for electricity and gas trade, and he figured if he could get one going for CO2 he could make BILLIONS. By forcing everyone to buy "carbon offsets" he created the market to trade them, and would have made money on every trade. It was ALWAYS about money, he couldn't give a crap about the environment, his own actions prove that.
Leftists are always telling everyone else how to live, but the rules don't apply to themselves (because they are so much smarter than we are, don't you know)--why do you think Congress exempts itself from so many of it's own laws?
As to the "science" of AGW, it's no better than a religion--meaning, it's an act of faith, not true science (kind of like belief in Gaia). When Algore claimed "The science is settled" every true scientist on Earth should have stood up and said he was an idiot. Scientific method means that NO science is EVER settled. I learned that as a freshman chemistry major. AGW is not science, it's politics--about how we are all going to live.
The Big E| 5.17.11 @ 1:26PM
"When Algore claimed "The science is settled" every true scientist on Earth should have stood up and said he was an idiot."
And indeed they would have, except that they knew that soon, there would be billions of government and non-profit org dollars thrown around on grants to scientists willing to sell the scientific souls and claim "proof" of something that they all knew did not exist. And so that's what they did.
True science in this country may not be quite dead, but thanks in large part to people like Algore, it's on life support, and its prognosis is not good.
Bob Grant| 5.17.11 @ 12:01PM
I do find it rich that billion dollar Gore didn't bother to install solar panels on his estates until the mid 2000's.
He writes his book Earth in the Balance , written 20 some years ago, about the dire environmental consequences we will face unless IMMEDIATE action takes place to reverse course. He doesn't even bother to put up the facade of walking the walk by taking the cursory step of installing solar panels.
Solar panels? WTF? That technology's been around for some 40 years.

You know, we all poke fun at Algore and the stupid little enviro-lemmings willing to follow idiots like him over any cliff, but have you ever done any research into what the serious eco-nuts actually advocate? (By the way, in my opinion, "serious eco-nut" does NOT describe Algore - he was never a true believer as demonstrated by his own actions - he was just trying to ride that particular wave to power and/or prosperity. There are serious eco-nuts out there who actually live in accord with their insane philosophy.)
Let's just check a couple of things some of them have actually said:
The right to have children should be a marketable commodity, bought and traded by individuals but absolutely limited by the state. - Kenneth Boulding, originator of the "Spaceship Earth" concept (as quoted by William Tucker in Progress and Privilege, 1982)
What we've got to do in energy conservation is try to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, to have approached global warming as if it is real means energy conservation, so we will be doing the right thing anyway in terms of economic policy and environmental policy. -- Timothy Wirth, former U.S. Senator (D-Colorado)
I suspect that eradicating small pox was wrong. It played an important part in balancing ecosystems. -- John Davis, editor of Earth First! Journal
Human beings, as a species, have no more value than slugs. -- John Davis, editor of Earth First! Journal
The extinction of the human species may not only be inevitable but a good thing....This is not to say that the rise of human civilization is insignificant, but there is no way of showing that it will be much help to the world in the long run. -- Economist editorial
We advocate biodiversity for biodiversity’s sake. It may take our extinction to set things straight -- David Foreman, Earth First!
Phasing out the human race will solve every problem on earth, social and environmental. -- Dave Forman, Founder of Earth First!
If radical environmentalists were to invent a disease to bring human populations back to sanity, it would probably be something like AIDS -- Earth First! Newsletter
Human happiness, and certainly human fecundity, is not as important as a wild and healthy planets...Some of us can only hope for the right virus to come along. -- David Graber, biologist, National Park Service
If I were reincarnated, I would wish to be returned to Earth as a killer virus to lower human population levels. -- Prince Phillip, World Wildlife Fund
Cannibalism is a "radical but realistic solution to the problem of overpopulation." -- Lyall Watson, The Financial Times, 15 July 1995
We, in the green movement, aspire to a cultural model in which killing a forest will be considered more contemptible and more criminal than the sale of 6-year-old children to Asian brothels. -- Carl Amery
Every time you turn on an electric light, you are making another brainless baby -- Helen Caldicott, Union of Concerned Scientists
To feed a starving child is to exacerbate the world population problem -- Lamont Cole
Some of these people literally advocate genocide on a global scale. And they're supposedly educated, and enlightened. The reality is that radical environmentalism, like every other radical leftist movement, is a cult of Death. And yet, we never take them at their word.
Nunya| 5.17.11 @ 2:56PM
Environmentalism has its roots in "central planning" (aka Marxism), where the government makes the decisions for everyone and everything. It's like a watermelon--green on the outside, red on the inside.

A perspective is needed here to understand this 40-year old conspiracy pursued by our commies and eco-nazis.
1) It started in the 1970's with the Global Cooling scam, propagated by some rejects of private enterprise. Their recommended remedy was to disarm our nuclear defense bombers and send them to spread soot over the poles and increase the heat and prevent those new glaciers from crushing the New York skyscrapers to dust; when that did not excite anybody the same bunch invented
2) Global Warming hoax, propagated by the same rejects (e.g., Dr. Hansen) in the 1990's; we will all be cooked and die from hunger; somehow we were not sufficiently frightened, and besides we had some 11 years of cooling - so the same bunch of incompetents and commies/eco-nazis invented
3) Climate Change flimflam in the 2000's; so whatever happens we must confiscate all private companies, cars, houses...and eliminate some 3 billion people (prohibition of DDT already killed about 550 million people);
Marc Jeric| 5.19.11 @ 5:39PM
Let me continue: when this latest flimflam failed to result in nationalization of private enterprise, we have entered the new phase of the old conspiracy by introducing
4) Cap & trade power grab now; but the aims are the same - global communist government led by the United Nations; spreading our wealth around; eliminating unnecessary elections...and saving the planet thanks to that bloviating gasbag Gore.
Marc Jeric| 5.19.11 @ 5:46PM

Mark,
Actually Gore got this one right. Its not very complicated. Your car burns gasoline with oxygen and puts out carbon dioxide , water and other less desireable byproducts. Your body burns food and oxygen and puts out carbon dioxide, water and other less desirable byproducts.
In the case of ethanol, the fuel can even be the same for both!
Henri Suyderhoud| 5.22.11 @ 3:14PM
From the moment that I saw the Gore movie on a dvd about 4 yrs ago, I knew there was something wrong with it. After making some order-of-magnitude calculations, reading four books on the subject (by climate scientists), some IPCC reports, and attending a presentation by Dr Lindzen of MIT on the subject, I have become convinced that there is no imminent danger, nor will be there in the forseeable long run, a "tipping point" event that will cause great harm to the world at large, at least not from "climate change". I have corresponded some with Dr Lindzen and was asssured that my rough calculations were pointing in the right direction. I am convinced Al Gore misunderstands the science, and has profited greatly from misinforming the public, the Congress, and some Presidents. I welcome your publication and encourage you to continue to hammer on this issue, until there is a changing of the unfortunate tide of unwarreted misinformation on the subject. That is the only tide I fear.
