Another Perspective

New Republican Presidential Hopefuls Emerge

It’s lucky the party has a deep bench.

The conventional wisdom is that Barack Obama is now unbeatable in the 2012 Presidential race because he has finally put the birth certificate and Osama bin Laden issues to rest — and because there are so far no strong GOP candidates on the horizon.

Not so fast. Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, and Michele Bachmann may not seem exciting enough conservatives to give Obama a run for his money, so insiders are now thinking outside the box for potential White House candidates. Among the exciting prospects:

George H.W. Bush: He still has four more years of eligibility. True, he’s 87 years old, but 87 is the new 77, and Ronald Reagan was 78 when he left office. Bush Sr.’s star has risen since losing to Bill Clinton and jumping out of an airplane at 80. He proved he works well with Democrats after he and Clinton teamed up to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. Moreover, after George W. Bush’s eight years, George Sr. looks twice as good as he did in office. If son Jeb is not available, the old man might well be open to be drafted. Four years is too long not to have a Bush in office.

Ross Perot: He hasn’t been in the news a lot lately, true, but he’s still feisty, rich, outspoken and excitable, even if nobody quotes him anymore. He would bring some pizzazz to an otherwise bland roster of GOP candidates. At the very least, Perot is certain to throw a good scare into the Democrats and, maybe best of all, restore Dana Carey’s career.

Steve Forbes: Like Perot, he’s kept a low profile lately and, though still a terminally boring speaker, his radical tax plan has gained new luster since the economy tanked. The deficit and the budget are suddenly very sexy issues. Forbes hasn’t talked about running, but he may just be acting coy and might be coaxed out of hiding to take on the President, whose glamour boy image may work to Forbes’s credit as Mr. Un-excitement.

Todd Palin: Perhaps not the most likely name that leaps to mind, but, hey, why not? He’s attractive and married to a woman who is catnip to the media. While lacking certain governance skills, Palin has shown himself cool under fire and is able to manage a maverick wife and crazy daughter while also proving he can exert firm control behind a dog team. If that’s not enough, John McCain is said to be ready to endorse him.

Chuck Norris: Fading movie stars make by far the best Republican politicians – Ronald Reagan, George Murphy, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Shirley Temple — so Norris could be a shoo-in, especially on a macho ticket with Tom Selleck. They would line up favorably against Obama, towering over him in TV debates. If Norris declines to run, there’s still a wide open field of conservative star prospects – Kelsey Grammer, Jon Voight, Heather Locklear, James Caan, Cheryl Ladd and Craig T. Nelson. Clint Eastwood, 80, and Ernest Borgnine, 92, are probably a tad elderly to appeal to the electorate, but Ron Paul, a serious but spry contender, is 75.

Lamar Alexander: Many people, even Republicans, are surprised to learn that he’s still around – not only alive and well but a Senator from Tennessee. He ran for President in 1996 and 2000, so the man is battle-tested. He’s tanned, rested and ready, and looks good to go, especially in a plaid shirt with a hunting rifle under his arm. Don’t write him off too quickly. Alexander stands out in a field of even darker horses.

Dennis Miller: He’s the liveliest speaker among potential GOP candidates, or at least the most intentionally comical. It didn’t hurt Al Franken (D-Minn.). Miller has years of experience before audiences delivering amusing rants and can be counted on to draw good crowds, rev up his Comedy Central base and provide much funnier sound bites than Obama.

Joe the Plumber: Joe still has about two minutes of fame left and could make the most of them if he ran for President. He hasn’t been heard from much since the 2008 race, probably because of a news blackout by the media, who finally abandoned him when it turned out he didn’t have a plumber’s license or possibly even a wrench.

Edward Brooke: The first modern-day Republican black Senator is now 91 but could prove a formidable foe against Barack Obama as a Massachusetts alternative to ex-governor Mitt Romney. Brooke hasn’t held office since he retired in 1979 but he could really make things hot for the country’s first black President. The only possible down side is that he once had an affair with Barbara Walters, but at 91 that can only enhance his chances.

If The Unemployment Rate doesn't get below 8 Percent, A Refrigerator could beat The Peter Principle, Keynesian, Alinskyite, Obama.

Americans will vote their wallets again in 2012.

Harry the Horrible| 5.11.11 @ 9:51AM

Dunno.
The economy was miserable for a decade before the Second World War and FDR won re-election in peacetime twice (1936, and 1940) with that economy.

If anything, Pres. Obama has MORE (Soros, Crony Capitalists like GE and the banksters, Unions, ACORN, the MSM, etc) going for him than FDR ever did. He isn't beaten until his opponent is sworn in.

Clint| 5.11.11 @ 10:07AM

Americans are learning about The Myth of Obama's FDR Keynesian Economic Model.

"Two UCLA economists say they have figured out why the Great Depression dragged on for almost 15 years, and they blame a suspect previously thought to be beyond reproach: President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

After scrutinizing Roosevelt's record for four years, Harold L. Cole and Lee E. Ohanian conclude in a new study that New Deal policies signed into law 71 years ago thwarted economic recovery for seven long years.

"Why the Great Depression lasted so long has always been a great mystery, and because we never really knew the reason, we have always worried whether we would have another 10- to 15-year economic slump," said Ohanian, vice chair of UCLA's Department of Economics. "We found that a relapse isn't likely unless lawmakers gum up a recovery with ill-conceived stimulus policies."

Grzmlyk| 5.11.11 @ 10:56AM

You are giving the American people WAY too much credit; the mainstream media is already working double time to - you'll forgive the bigoted expression - whitewash the execrable Obama's record.

The media manufacture pop culture, and pop culture drives public opinion. Throw in the Marxist indoctrination camps that our educational system used to be, and we are doomed.

How will the mainstream media do it? Simple: They will simply repeat ad infinitum that one-size-fits-all rationale for making Obama Dicator for Life:

Sure, the dollar is collapsing, inflation is rampant, real unemployment stays stubbornly at about 17%, our government borrows $188 million every hour of every day, our debt has soared by $3 TRILLION in just 30 months, health care promises to enslave all of us, entitlements promse another $70 trillion in expenditures in the next 25 years, the attitude toward business is more hostile than it was in the old Soviet Union, gas prices are pushing $5 a gallon, the Middle East is on fire, our allies disrespect us, our enemies no longer fear us, China is poised to swallow all the bits of America that Islam doesn't claim and American culture is disintegrating before our eyes, BUT . . .

Think how much worse it would be if the great and powerful, mighty and beneficent, brilliant and brave Barack Hussein Obama weren't our president. He and he alone has descended from the heavens to hold back, by the glistening sweat of his beautiful, superior, handsome brow, the implosion of the planet. All Hail Obama!

And it will be done as the hapless mackeral of a GOP nominee flops around on the hot griddle of the media's relentless excoriation in a futile attempt to combat the image they will have created for him of a stupid, ignorant, cretinous, bigoted, bullying, homophobic, greedy, selfish pig - ironically, the very things the real Obama is.

Ain't gonna happen.

Didn't H.L. Mencken say that nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public?

We are about to prove him right - yet again.

Purpleguy| 5.11.11 @ 4:12PM

Obama got Osama - that's all they will remember ...

Nick| 5.11.11 @ 11:45PM

No he didn't.

The Military Industrial Complex did!

All President Dither did was say okay. At least O'Bama did what Bubba 'the pervert' Clinton never would.

The Gipper| 5.13.11 @ 7:58AM

He did more than say OK--when he took office, he met with the heads of the CIA and JSOC, and -ordered- them to restart the search, which GWB had let lapse in 2005. So Obama did what GWB promised, but didn`t do in the seven years after Rumsfeld (probably another one of your heroes) botched the Tora Bora cornering of Obama.

Nick| 5.13.11 @ 11:54PM

The Dipper,

I didn't know we were hunting "Obama" in 2002.
Wasn't he in the Illinois legislature then?
Dope.

p.s. Yes, Mr. Rumsfeld is a superhero and a great American.

buckeyeman| 5.11.11 @ 11:51AM

Clint, how foolish. Everyone now knows that the Great Depression was George W. Bush's fault.

Wow, all this time, I thought it was THE JOOS! (see Red Eye for the spelling)

Aristede| 5.12.11 @ 7:58PM

And now, I see Catholic professors and Catholic bishops have lambated John Boehner (a Catholic) over the proposed draconian budget.

(Sigh). I remember the days when Catholic leaders went after Dems over abortion, denying them communion and other stuff too. But they always ignored people from the Family Values party.

Michael Tomlinson| 5.11.11 @ 10:02AM

I'd vote for the Fridge.

The Bishop| 5.11.11 @ 10:39AM

Don't count out the Toaster.

Occam's Tool| 5.11.11 @ 2:36PM

The Fridge is a nice man.

By the way, I agree with Clint on this one, as I've stated before---gas above $4.50 a gallon in 2012 will equal unemployment rate well above 8%, and unofficial even higher.

Of course it is. that's what makes it worthwhile. There is a germ of truth in it insofar as the GOP has a great bench, but no starters. Sad for America and the Conservative Movement.

Melvin| 5.11.11 @ 7:53AM

I dunno people, something out in the Republican presidential field just doesn't seem right. I really can't put my finger on it right now, but it appears that the Republican establishment doesn't want to field a candidate that has the charisma, and the gonads to take Pres. Obama to task.
Rumor control has it that the Republican establishment is waiting till 2016 to basically get off it's backside, and basically ceded the 2012 Pres. Elect. to Pres. Obama.
I have read and heard this scenario from different places and different people. But the fly in the Republican establishment's ointment is, as they like to call it, "The Elephant in the Room, the Tea Party."
The Socialist Democrat Party is going to beat the third political party drum to split, the Tea Party from the Republican Leadership.
The odd part about this is, the Republican Party is already massively fractured, without the Socialist Democrats help.
People, too bad that we just can't dissolve the whole political mess right here and now and rebuild. Hell who knows it may come to that anyway.

Mimi| 5.11.11 @ 10:02AM

They need to run...not walk and talk MARK LEVIN into running....Gonads , verbal skills, and would obliterate the "O" in a debate. Patriotic in the GOLD standard category. He's not running now but what a DREAM candidate he would be !

The Gipper| 5.13.11 @ 7:38AM

Yeah, that wack job would be an LSD-inspired dream. All talk and no cattle. He`d really pull in those independent and swing voters.

" I really can't put my finger on it right now, but it appears that the Republican establishment doesn't want to field a candidate that has the charisma, and the gonads to take Pres. Obama to task".

Well, how about maybe they DON`T have anyone that fits that bill. There`s a reason Newt Gingrich chained himself to Reagan`s corpse when he made his announcement this week. Newt wants to campaign with Reagan the same way that Tony Curtis and Sidney Poiter were chained at the wrists in The Defiant Ones, 2 escaped cons running through the countryside.

JOE OLIVA| 5.17.11 @ 5:02PM

We need to get rid of the Karl Roves and other elite GOP idiots who trashed Christine O'Donnell & Sharon Angle and cost us the Senate. They hate the Tea Party and will let the country go down the tubes just so they can reclaim power.

NO MORE RINOS!!!!

The only place that conventional wisdom says Obama's going to get re-elected is inside DC. So far, DC conventional wisdom has left us paupers vice independent dynamic Americans.

Well the independent dynamic Americans who have been ducking and dodging regulations for over 50 yrs and achieved their dreams DESPITE Washington have now had it.

We're coming to DC and we're cleaning house - we know it's going to take a decade. So be it. The Soviet Union didn't think we had staying power either. The Brits thought we'd give up after a summer.

The Wisconsin Union thugs thought we would surrender. Ask Judge Kloppenwhiner how that worked out.

Sorry, President O is a NO in round 2. That decision has been made by many many Americans silently in the deepest depths of their hearts because they intuit that this President has no deep love for our great heritage and unique role in history. We Know, and for that reason President O is a No.

For those who are doubting this - President O knows, that's why he's working overtime with every action to get his 'base' riled up. Any politician working this early, this aggressively to secure their BASE is not confident of a WIN. They are playing scared. The candidate who can beat Obama is the candidate who is going into BLUE territory and marking time through events - only one potential candidate is doing that.

JohnB| 5.11.11 @ 9:08AM

I agree -- not even close. "Funny" must bear some degree of verisimilitude. The supposed "hopefuls" listed don't cut it. I think that the funniest joke was a call-in to Rush Limbaugh, in which the listener facetiously suggested that Donald Trump ought to run as a Democrat so as to force Obama to debate someone who isn't all starry-eyed at our Ruling Class Wonder-man Caesar.

The Gipper| 5.13.11 @ 7:47AM

Rush Limbaugh should get off his butt and put his billions where his big fat mouth is, and run in the GOP primary. Against that weak field, he`d probably get the nomination.

Then, let`s see how many independent, middle-class folks he can pull in (the kind he looks down on, but the kind who decide national elections).

"the best educated and the job creators of the new economy - are "his (Obama) voters". The strength of the tea party, in contrast, is in those economically depressed red states where the education level is low, and where people believe the birthism and other right wing nonsense" (4.28.11 @ 1:02AM)

This election season is too important to trash the choice to run for President. It takes courage and commitment, and we can read through the overtime ambition to see who wants to be a servant and who wants to ride in Air Force One and be able to throw "free" parties.

I actually like the candidates expected to run. I don't need a super star. I need a Patriot candidate.

The Gipper| 5.13.11 @ 7:50AM

Your wishes have come true. Newt Gingrich is now running, and we know he is a patriot because he has told us he is. In fact, his hard work in pursuit of patriotism has caused him to stray from 2 marriages. But, unless you`re an evangelical in Iowa, this should not upset you.

LMajito| 5.11.11 @ 8:28AM

wow, it's only may 2011 and the same folks who could not forsee many of the events in the last decade are sitting around, drinking bottled water and issuing declarations as if they're oracles of truth and wisdom...

well take a major detour folks...common folks are too busy trying to figure out how to get their next gas tank filled...nov 2012 is way too distant to worry about it now...

if the gop wants to field effetes and wimps as their standard bearers, they don't deserve a seat at the table...they can go and take their few hundred followers and suck lollipops by the potomac while recalling ancient times (read 1980s) when the rape of the middle class started out at the altar of globalization by ronald...

global trade is good but only when fair trade is in place not 'free' trade which read another way is let's get america bohic once more

none of the gop eunuchs say too much about the trade inbalance...because heavens forbid we say somethind derogatory about our 'trading partners'.

the reason the donald is getting traction is because he has hit a nerve with the populace at large...i do hope he has the nerve and his kids cover his back in his attempt...he's not perfect but none of the players the gop comes even close...btw a debate between the O and the donald should be interesting...heard that newt was throwing his hat on the ring as well...now that would be a great debate mr O vs the newt on policy matters...the veil will be removed then...

we need a leader not a charmer so charsima is worthless in my book (clinton and the O have it but its like lipstick on a pig)...

we should never confuse charisma with character

The Gipper| 5.13.11 @ 7:54AM

The Donald is (or was) getting traction because he has been attempting (clumsily) to appeal to that wing in the GOP that simply can not stand seeing a black man in the WH (or "Halfrican", as Rush described him). Like any good salesman, the Donald knows who his audience is.

Kelly Staples| 5.11.11 @ 8:33AM

What about Capt. Crybaby? He has a ton of Beltway experience, loves making bi-partisan deals with his socialist friends, and always has a nice tan. Sure he'd lose, but at least Karl Rove would say swell things about him, and that's what's really important.

john dubose| 5.11.11 @ 8:53AM

One of the present Rep hopefulls will shine for the party base during the course of the primaries. Then there will be the same long expensive campaign as always. It will be followed by a close vote ( as always ).

Louis Jenkins| 5.11.11 @ 9:00AM

I had no idea the Republicans were so well vested with talent. After last week's SC debate it was easy to assume who would be the standard bearer. (Not!) There's a bunch of Republican and Conservative politicians out there, and many of them have good things to say. It's a little too early for us to make up our minds, but they need to keep up the public appearances. It helps us decide.

The Gipper| 5.13.11 @ 8:01AM

I for one would love to see all the hot-air generating miscreants on talk radio get in and run. Ideally one of them would get the nomination, and then proceed to scare all the independent and swing voters back to Obama.

I`d die from laughing so hard. But of course, this won`t happen--none of those blowhards has enough guts to put their money (and most of them make 7-figures/year) where their mouths are.

JimP| 5.11.11 @ 9:02AM

I guess this column is supposed to be humorous. The list is unserious. Also, the author seems to be referring to all of these persons as conservatives. They are not. A conservative is defined basically as being like Goldwater and Reagan. Believe as they did and you are conservative. GHW Bush, for example, is a Republican, aka: RINO, Rockefeller, Country Club Repub etc., NOT a conservative. RINOs have been co-opting the term conservative. Lots of RINOs call themselves conservative these days (Huckabee is a great example of a RINO who calls himself conservative), but once in office they act like RINOs. It's time we stopped letting them get away with this.

The Gipper| 5.13.11 @ 8:17AM

This reminds me of the notorious "Who Is A Jew" debates that go on betwen Jewish orthodox rabbis.

I suspect that --under your standards -- war hero and one of the fathers of American Exceptionalism, Dwight Eisenhower, would`t qualify.
Guess what? I suspect that the real Ronald Reagan (not the imaginary one) might fail your test too.

Jordan| 5.11.11 @ 9:11AM

If anyone wants the name of a true Reagan Conservative then Thaddeus McCotter is your man. He is a Congressman from Michigan, funny, almost too intelligent to actually be a politician, and arguably the best speaker out of all the 535 lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Rick V.| 5.11.11 @ 12:46PM

Satire, perhaps. But poorly written, if so.

JimP| 5.11.11 @ 1:47PM

I think the problem is we've all heard this kind of stuff from RINOs who were dead serious about it. Thus we are unsure if this is satire or another RINO trying to convince us that Papa Bush was a conservative etc, etc.

Nunya| 5.11.11 @ 6:47PM

NONE of the Bush's are conservatives, at least fiscally. Someone might know Jeb better than I do, but I will never vote for another Bush regardless.

As to the article, I recognize it is satire (at least I hope so), but like most here I found it unfunny. I guess one can't always be funny when trying so I don't want to beat the writer up too much. Even comedians have bad days on stage...(Michael Richards, anyone?)

Aristede| 5.12.11 @ 8:09PM

Joe The Plumber was neither. His first name is Sam and he is NOT a plumber (son of a high-level aide to Bush 41).

He was an attempt by the GOP to show they cared for middle-class folks. Worked about as well as stuck toilet.

Doctor Right| 5.11.11 @ 9:41AM

The Republican Bench is actually QUITE deep. If elected, most of the current candidates would make fine Presidents.

However, once again, the pundits are missing the story. As Rush Limbaugh so eloquently stated on Monday, it is the Democrat's bench that is thin and extremely weak. No President in recent history, including Jimmy Carter, has provided his opponents with so much fresh ammunition to use against him in the election cycle.

All that's needed is the will to take the fight directly to Obama and the Democrats, without flinching and fear of the lame-stream media.

Aristede| 5.12.11 @ 8:14PM

No President in recent history, including Jimmy Carter, has provided his opponents with so much fresh ammunition to use against him in the election cycle.

Like taking down Bin Laden, after Bush failed to do so over SEVEN years? Team Obama is likely hoping that you and (more importantly) GOP kingpins keep listening to Rush for direction. That surely would ensure that President Obama remains President Obama come January 2013.

Ron Paul`s fans think he won the first GOP debate. I`ve had to rain on their parade and remind them he was up against 4 lightweights since none of their "heavyweights" showed up.

Larry East| 5.11.11 @ 9:43AM

This has to be a joke. Not one of these suggested 'leaders' could be elected.
How about Herman Cain? He is a true conservative; can debate with the best of them and would end any suggestion that Obama loses due to racism.
Take a serious look at Mr. Cain. He won the S.C. debate hands down.

Occam's Tool| 5.11.11 @ 2:42PM

I would be thrilled with Allen West, Herman Cain, or John Bolton.

I would gladly contribute to Sarah or Jim DeMint. Paul Ryan running would be lovely.

I've just named 6 candidates, at least 5 of which could wax Obama's tail without breathing hard.

Then there's Pawlenty and the Governor of Wisconsin.

Note, I still haven't mentioned any of the biggest names except Palin. The bench is actually quite deep.

Mimi| 5.11.11 @ 4:21PM

Occam....With that terrific bench...What a team to behold ...It could be great for the country! I heard recently the WH internal polls PRE - Osama, were downright dismal for Obama's re-election. What actors they are!

Whether that candidate is Palin, Bachmann, Cain or Santorum remains to be seen. But I see only those four with enough capacity for a scorched earth policy against the media to make it work and also to pit the public against the media in alarming numbers.

Love it. The article does point out the problem confronting the Republican party and The Conservative movement. Note they are not synonomous. There is no particular energizing Conservative in the mix. As an aside, Steve Forbes is a great idea man and should Sec. of Treasury. Newt likewise is a good theorist, but is not the man.

They once said when Cicero spoke, people listened, but when Demosthenes spoke, they marched. The Conservatives need to find that Demosthenes, unite on that ground and fight with everthing they have. Futuere generations deserve no less.

What is shameful is the fact there are some so-called conservatives replying on this page that none of the candidates in the GOP ignites a spark. That's the way, don't think for yourself, and let AP, ABC/Washington Post, MSNBC, or MSN do your thinking for you. This morning, AP has Obama's approval rating at 60 %, never mind the poll was given to 58% Democrats, 21% GOP, and the rest Independents or Libertarians---but, first and foremost, it was AP. Really a reliable source, but sadly, its influence is even evident on this page.

David T| 5.11.11 @ 1:14PM

somnolence--The problem is that too many of the candidates truly induce, well, somnolence in the rank-and-file. It's not the fault of the media. On the other hand, Gingrich not only ignites a spark, he's a veritable lightning rod.

What is with all the cynicism today? First read David Kahane's snarky column on National Review, and came to TAS hoping to find a palate cleanser--only to read this!

The media is doing a good job convincing us that we don't have an electable candidate, and I refuse to believe that. At the moment, we have a lot of voices, and I think it's good to consider everything they have to say. There's a lot of time for one to rise to the top, but I pray that we won't let the media pick who it is this time!

Occam's Tool| 5.11.11 @ 2:46PM

Who Knows?| 5.11.11 @ 1:11PM

Yuck, yuck.

From somewhere in my deepest memory is the hoary realization that---

It’s an ILLUSION that ANYONE is in charge, truly.

What is the first lesson a newbie president learns?

How little POWER he really has, accentuated daily by the inability to make the omnipresent bureaucracy bend to his will.

Just as the vital shock of very birth brings crying to a baby---YOU and ME---the rest of life is simply a variation on this essential truth.

And, so, humans----YOU and ME--- seek for solace and comfort, as we find our sane place in society---HOPEFULLY---by sticking exceptional OTHER humans into poses, or positions, of power, and---

BELIEVING IN THEM.

Ergo, religion and politics, fill this need; but, nevertheless, nobody is in charge!

The satirical joke, using old retreads like Perot and Bush I, etc, certainly reminds me of this.

Don't believe that media manufactured line that Obama can't be beaten. He surely can be beaten with any reasonable Republican candidate. Sorry Paulettes, this leaves you out of the mix. We could have good candidates with Palin, Bachmann, Cain, or Santorum.

By the time the election rolls around, the glow from OBL take down will all be gone. The magic and mystery of the BHO tel-e-promter and the fake columns will have all faded. We will be left with $4, $5, or $6 Dollar gasoline, skyrocketing grocery and clothing prices and many with no jobs. Just about anybody but John McCain could beat Obummer.

Its not just the msm. its RINOS and other Republicans and allied pundits. I asked Gerald if he wants to WIN. The same question should be asked of Charles Krauthammer,Carl Rove,Mitch Daniels to name just a few. We do know that John MCC DID NOT WANT TO WIN. I hope that people do not buy this garbage again.

There is a follow up question to the desire to win. That is this:

Will you debate Obama directly on all aspects of his POLICIES AND POLITICAL IDEAS without exception and challenge him about HIS RESPONSIBILITY TO OUR CURRENT CRISIS OR WILL YOU ALLOW HIM FREELY TO BLAME GWB. ?

WHICH WILL IT BE ?

randyinrocklin| 5.11.11 @ 3:26PM

Bachmann/Palin for 2 terms and Palin/Cain for another 2 terms sounds like a conservative dynasty to me. Here's the Cabinet appointments by Bachmann/Palin:
1. Secretary of State John Bolton
2. Secretary of Defense General Patreaus
3.Attorney General: Mark Levin
4.Press Secretary Chris Christie

Elminate the Dept of Energy, Education, HHS, IRS,Transportation, Commerce,Homeland Security. And any other unconstitutional bureaucracies that should have never been enacted.

Aristede| 5.12.11 @ 8:41PM

Bachmann/Palin for 2 terms and Palin/Cain for another 2 terms sounds like a conservative dynasty to me.

Sounds like a 1960`s wild hallucination to me. This COULD happen, but you`d have to make all the independent, middle-class voters (the ones who actually decide elections) stay home.

And even the sainted Ronald Reagan once talked about eliminating departments like Education, but ended up adding a couple more instead. (Oh, and he raised taxes too, when necessary). Reality has a funny way of busting up hallucinations.

good_wife| 5.11.11 @ 4:29PM

Whoa -- you guys are serious about this -- I thought it was a gag but you're scarier than I thought.

RCV| 5.11.11 @ 6:12PM

Yet another independent poll out today (from Reuters/IPPS) demonstrating how divorced from reality are. TAS readers who believe Obama is not reelectable. Here's how much Obama beats the current prospective GOP field by: Romney by 13; Huckabee by 12; Gingrich by 18; Pawlenty by 18; Palin by 19; Daniels by 18; Trump by 27; and Bachman by 21.

Nor is this poll a fluke; it is consistent with every other poll taken in recent months, and demonstrates how unimpressed the public is with the GOP field.

The scary thing for the GOP is this: things are about as bad right now as they will get for Obama on the economy. Yes, the recovery is slow, but the direction is unmistakable. Yes, gas prices are really high, but they are about to head in the other direction - indeed, the collapse of the gas bubble started today with a sharp 6% drop. The current price is unsustainable given supply and demand figures.

In other words, all the negatives are out there for Obama already, while the public has yet to hear about the blemishes of the GOP field -- and hear it they will. This does not bode well for 2012 for your party, and it's time you understood that reality instead of pretending "a refrigerator" could beat Obama. Maybe it could, but none of the candidates the GOP can field can.

DRed| 5.11.11 @ 6:59PM

Does the C stand for Cassandra?

Nunya| 5.11.11 @ 7:01PM

RCV, by the time the elections come up next year, my bet is unemployment (U3 that is reported to every0ne) will be north of 12%, inflation will be in the double digits, gold will be north of $2,000 per ounce with Silver at or near $100 per ounce. Dow around 8,000, and Obozo has no chance of winning. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hillary challenge him at the primary, running on Bill's old line "It's the economy, stupid!"

Any bets?

RCV| 5.11.11 @ 7:31PM

I'd be surprised if ANY of those things will even be close to true. Since you don't hang around much with us Democrats, I can positively guarantee you that the last thing won't happen - Obama is solid with the Democratic base, and this last week has erased any chance of an internal divide in the party. My own views of the situation: economy will continue its slow but steady rise, employment down in the 8-9%; the silver and gold bubbles will burst; the Dow will continue its ascent since Obama came in and will be at a new high close to the election - 14,000+. We shall see, but I think even Glenn Beck will be dumping his gold by then, assuming he isn't raptured in a couple of weeks.

Aristede| 5.12.11 @ 8:45PM

Too bad for you the trends are all going in the other direction. Like TEN straight months of solid, if unspectacular growth.
The middle-class tax cut that Obama won in his budget deal last December is surely helping (and why does the so-called librul media almost never mention that tax cut?).
But don`t let me interrupt your daydreaming. It`s the best thing Team Obama has going for them right now.

Nick| 5.11.11 @ 11:37PM

Well, jeez. Let's just not run ANYONE. Let's just hand the election to Obama. Maybe the author of this article--like many "insider" Republicans-- seems to prefer bashing the GOP field and having Obama win. No other explanation of this gloom-and-doom makes sense.

P.S. to all idiot RINOs (but I repeat myself): Obama wasn't given much of a chance this time in 2007 either. Get a clue, get a life, or get out of the way.

bolero| 5.11.11 @ 8:52PM

The author "forgot" Newt Gingrich, who announced today. Thankfully, conservative GOP blogger Andrew Sullivan hasn`t:
Gingrich Announces Doomed Campaign

Jacob Sullum rounded up pre-reaction. Alex Knapp suggests a campaign slogan:

GINGRICH 2012: HE WILL ALWAYS LOVE AMERICA. UNLESS IT GETS CANCER.

Alex Massie calls it "the only slogan ... and commentary his opponents need" for reasons Frum outlined awhile back. Kevin Drum imagines how this will play out:

Gingrich can't escape his past. His primary opponents will stay quiet about his lecherous past as long as he's no threat, but the minute he looks like he might really have a chance to win, at least a few of them will go after him with all guns blazing. Politics ain't beanbag, after all.

Matt Taibbi is dying to hit the road:

I literally cannot wait to get back to covering the insane reality show that is the presidential race, especially since the Republicans seem determined to run the most entertaining collection of mutants seen on earth since Tod Browning’s classic Freaks.
