President Obama has in his possession the world’s most expensive
photograph. And he won’t release it.
The photograph shows the corpse of Osama bin Laden. It
might not fetch $3.3 million at a Sotheby’s auction, as an Andreas
Gursky photo did in 2007, but it cost far more than that to make.
Into that single photograph went years of costly intelligence work,
untold lives lost in pursuit of its subject, and a military
operation that risked the lives of 79 Navy SEALs, numerous U.S.
intelligence agents and sources, and a U.S. presidency. And the
president won’t release it. Why, then, didn’t he just blow up bin
Laden’s hideout?
Here is the Los Angeles Times
describing Obama’s decision to send SEALs instead of a cruise
missile into bin Laden’s Pakistani safe house:
He had vetoed a plan to obliterate the compound with an
airstrike. Obama wanted to be certain he had Bin Laden, and there
was no guarantee that a smoking crater would yield proof. He had
asked for a bolder plan, one that would allow the U.S. to take
custody of Bin Laden or his body. It posed far more
risk.
The risk: the lives of 79 SEALS, America’s relations with
Pakistan and other important quasi-allies, and Obama’s presidency.
Failure could have ended all of them. A missile strike would have
been clean, quick, and easy to explain. Just one problem: It would
have vaporized bin Laden.
So the president made the risky — and right — call: Send
in the SEALs, bring back the body. They did as their president
commanded. They invaded a sovereign country, killed the world’s
most wanted man, and returned with his corpse — the proof Obama
knew he would need to prove to a skeptical world that the United
States had gotten its man.
And then, after all of that, he kept the proof secret. The
world has no more evidence of bin Laden’s death than a missile
strike would have produced. Obama has it. But the world is left in
the dark. The people of earth will just have to trust Obama on this
one.
I don’t for a second doubt that Osama bin Laden was killed
in that raid. But others do. And unless the president releases a
photo, more will.
The “deathers” alone are not reason enough to release the
photo. The president says, and he is right, that some people will
not be convinced no matter what the government releases. But that’s
not the point. The same was true of his birth certificate, but he
released that. Why? Because the crazies were starting to spread
doubt among the perfectly sane.
In his 60 Minutes interview, the president said
bin Laden wasn’t a trophy. Sure he is. Just as Daniel Pearl and
Nick Berg were.
“It is important for us to make sure that very graphic
photos of somebody who was shot in the head are not floating around
as an incitement to additional violence, as a propaganda tool,”
Obama said. “You know, that’s not who we are. You know, we don’t
trot out this stuff as trophies.”
So after using intelligence gathered from prisoners in
black-site prisons and Guantanamo Bay, killing who knows how many
enemies in pursuit of leads, and ignoring international law to
enter a sovereign country and kill a man who was unarmed and hiding
behind at least one woman, Obama says we must show the world our
civility by not releasing a picture?
We are at war with a ruthless, barbaric enemy. The steps
we took to extinguish Osama bin Laden were entirely justified — as
is releasing the proof of his death, which Obama went to such great
pains to obtain. Secreting the photo in the president’s desk drawer
is not going to win us any brownie points with the death-to-America
crowd. Announcing the results of a DNA test is not going to satisfy
the pics-or-it-didn’t-happen crowd.
Releasing the photo might temporarily raise the blood
pressure of people who already want to kill us. It also might give
pause to those thinking a life of jihad would be pretty sweet.
Domestically, it could do what Obama’s long-form birth certificate
did: end a cancerous lie.
This is the information age. Governments suffer when they
needlessly withhold secrets the people think should not be secret.
Better that the image of an expired Osama bin Laden be released by
the president of the United States than some hacker from
WikiLeaks.

Obama refusing to release the photos because of "muslim sensitivities" to their release is disgusting and is further proof of this president's lack of understanding of the enemy here. Those "sensitive" muslims that he is so concerned about could give a damn about sending photos of beheadings of innocents, and Obama didn't care about American sensitivities when he released Abu Ghraib photos or coffins of US soldiers. Enough confusion and conflicting stories have been seen in these last few days. Everybody has a right to see these photos because Obama or his administration's word on anything is suspect.

canuckistani| 5.5.11 @ 4:11PM
.....perhaps he should have prefaced it with "in 2001 and 2002 we had OBL pinned down and inexplicably Junior decided that keeping him alive as a bogeyman to drum up support for his faux pretext for an Iraqi invasion was more politically expedient", further: "I, as commander in chief, and freshly vetted as an American citizen just last week and duly authorized to hold this position after being elected by the citizens in November 2008, chose to enable our special forces to analyze intel obtained last August - also during MY presidency - that either was unavailable or consciously discarded by the previous president"
and: "After careful consideration and a report by special ops that the mission was 'doable' and prepped, I gave the order - or 'killshot' that my predecessor either could not or would not for a variety of reasons known only to him".
In other words, BHO inherited the mess from Bush and has spent his presidency sifting through the mistakes and missed opportunities only to now have a clear decisive action that will forever separate him from Junior.
Zero credit is due, unless you want to elevate Junior to Tenant's medal of freedom or Harriett Myers' nomination debacles.
BHO's stance on Pakistan is also refreshing after a decade of pouring cold cash into the hands of Lahore gangsters on Junior's watch.

Good analysis! The photo should have been released. My wife comes from a Country where political debate, could bring physical harm. She has since become an American citizen, but the, "silence is best," mindset still prevails within her psyche.
But, after coming home from work Monday, the dog was giving me that pained, "Please, get me the hell of of here look," as his nose was pressed up against the screen door.
Inside the house was this fire spewing, at time profanity laced political diatribe from my normally quiet spouse.
"Dear, this is Bull Squeeze, I want to see that damn picture, Everything the President always says is a lie." I was standing there mute, the dog was hiding behind me, and I was looking for the number to the local priest, to cast the spirit of Ron Paul out of my wife.
All humor aside, if all this, "Circle Talk," by this Administration is finally gotten to my wife, who normally doesn't let politics get to here, then it is more serious than anything could have ever thought.
Practically everything that is uttered by this Administration is Bull Squeeze. By and large the American people want to believe him, and when he does seem to be on the straight and narrow, he goes and utters something that totally contradicts the previous statement.
My wife is the first person to give anyone the benefit of the doubt, but this current Administration has lost all if any credibility that it may have had with her.

You can be sure that the only reason that Obama got this right, i.e. giving the military the go ahead on taking out Bin Laden was because Bill Clinton was asked the same question twice and got it wrong both times. Clinton is still explaining his decision...Barry is smart enough to learn THAT lesson.
Don't release the pictures.
During the Second World War, Resistance fighters' best practice was to kill then hide the bodies of the enemy. This served to un-nerve the remaining troops as they never knew what happened to their comrades. Uncertainty is far more destructive than certainty about a loss. You can't get mad at something that you don't know about...
If I were President, I'd have had him taken out and then told nobody. Two weeks later I'd start saying that he was ineffective and baiting him. The enemy would be left trying to come up with a response to defend him - and the enemy might not know whether he was dead or alive and just hiding somewhere else. That would certainly weaken there side and do no harm to mine.
Five years later, (after my re-election because of a strong foreign policy and economy) I'd let the pictures out to finally settle the question.
Obama has politicized this to get himself a one month bump in the polls way too soon - we are still 18 months to the election....

Din Hirsch,
I agree. Releasing the pictures will not convince the already convinced of anything. The only value to releasing the pictures is to convince those who think he is alive that he is, in fact dead. What value is there in that, especially considering the down-side? Perhaps it serves to convey the message that the U.S. can, in fact, get you where you are hiding, in which case I'd prefer the tactical advantage of going against an uninformed or unprepared foe.
Mike C| 5.9.11 @ 2:33AM
He will release them, Sept 2012.

Dan, I like the way you think. Of course President Frequent Flier used this for purely political reasons. And, now that we are starting to find out that he wasn't even involved in the planning or run-up to go, even his political opportunism was done from a position of leading while following.

I'm amused myself that the Taliban is arguing that they aren't going to believe him AND simultaneously angry that they didn't bury a "war hero" properly (as if they are any more decent and respectful of the dead of their enemies and civilians...)
How about this? Obama should release the DNA analysis AND provide samples to three other countries for their own labs. But Dan has a great point, let the enemy sweat it out.

I think that the decision to use SOF to infiltrate the compound and execute bin Ladin was wise on several levels. Firstly, a cruise missile wouldn't have "vaporized" bin Ladin. At best, it would have just killed him and let control of his body be attained by the Pakistani government. At worst, he survives and becomes a symbol of omnipotence to the radical Muslim movement. By sending in SEALs to execute and capture the body, the United States controls the message. This was a wise decision.
The Arab/Muslim jihaddist knows bin Ladin's dead. The message we send by not showing the photo is this, "You cannot hide, you cannot run. You will just disappear with no one to mourn over your grave. "
It also demonstrates that this war isn't over. There are far more to deal with yet.

In addition, we got the hard drives and other intelligence that should cause major sweating in the enemy camps. That would have been destroyed by a cruise missile.

Anthony| 5.5.11 @ 10:12AM
Congrats Mr. Cline, you got one right, albeit somewhat circuitously with your snarky analysis of the "deathers" to the "birthers". This is not an issue of the "deathers" v. Obozo, similar to the birth certificate fisaco, which was completely mishandled by Obozo, but praised by the hero worshippers in the LSM, which apparently, you are one.
The issue, as I posted yesterday, concerns Obozo's misguided calculus in his decision to pay more respect to Muslim sensitivities than to the sensitivities of the American people, especially those who directly suffered as a result of 9/11.
Obozo has no feelings or concerns for what Americans suffered through on 9/11. As I said yesterday, his first reaction to 9/11 was probably that America deserved what happened, as his pastor, Rev. Wright has so often said.
Obozo's assinine comment about "not spiking the football", is proof that his Muslim leanings are stronger than his ties to America.
We Americans deserve to be treated with respect. We deserve to be treated as adults. We deserve cloture, for what ever reasons we want. We deserve to see the pictures of the man who has caused so much pain and harm to America, damn what some 7th century Muslim fanatics think!!! They already hate us, what more provocation do they need?
There is a dangerous mind set in Washington among both the Ds and Rs, as the increasingly isolated ruling class loses all touch with the people of America. For some time now, the elites have believed the American people are children to be led and controlled. Members of the club have all the answers and know best, we Americans just need to sit down and shut up, as the elite ruling class knows best.
I don't give a damn that some senator has seen a picture of Osama and that that should be good enough for the hoi polloi.
While you got this one right, Mr. Cline, you nonetheless, apparently think you are part of this elite class.
I've news for you, Obozo, and the elites in congress; don't get too comfortable guys, that rumbling in the distance you're hearing ain't thunder!!!

For once [and only once] I'll agree with Obama on this issue. I don't give a rat's rear about Muslim sensitivities or feelings, but i do care a great deal about our military men and women. If some looney Muslim becomes enraged over viewing those pictures of UBL with a bullet hole in his grimy head and decides to sneek up [and kill/injure] on one of our military members who is casually walking down the street in say Germany, then I think that my and everybody else curiosity and desire to see the dirty little pictures will just have to take a back seat. These Muslim extremists become enraged over political cartoons, books written etc that are detrimental to their worshiped profits/gods; just think what they'd do after viewing those pictures. We got him/UBL and our Seal Team 6 members can/will eventually give testamony/write books concerning same; and that's all the proof that I need. Job well done, congrats to our outstandingly brilliant military for their typical excellence, and BRAVO!!!!!!!!
solidground| 5.5.11 @ 10:48AM
I totally disagree. The bad-apple Muslims are already enraged and ready at any opportune moment to kill Americans. Usama's demise will not incite them further. But Obama's refusal to release the photo will do for him exactly what his refusal until recently to release his birth certificate did for him--bring out the crazies and conspiracy theorists, enabling him to point his long, condescending finger at "the nuts on the right." It is all an election tactic, one more baldly implemented by the most dissembling president in our history.
Occam's Tool| 5.5.11 @ 10:56AM

Oldefarte| 5.5.11 @ 4:10PM
TRUE, but I'm not concerned with those running at [in front of] you, but those running in back of [or disguised] of you, which are typical of their cowardice/chickenexcrementism. As indicated and typical, UBL was cowering in an upstairs bedroom when it was obvious that our Seal Team was about to force him to eat a bullet-sandwich for breakfast [others there hid behind women and children]. They are brave warriors when burkaed/masked alongside their Muslim brothers en masse shooting their Russian rifles into the air, but act quite differently when they are face-to-face with a SEAL!!!!!!!

Look, let's clear up this misconception that Obama took the "risky" path. He took the logical path that 99 out of 100 managers in any field would have taken. Bin Laden was on foreign soil. We did not absolutely know he was there. We strongly felt he was but did not have absolute assurance. If we had sent in 50 cruise missles, the whole world would have found out and we would have been highly embarrassed if a week later bin Laden released a tape laughing at us. We would have more or less lost our right to another strike (helo OR cruise missle!) in Pakistan with a failure like that. With a helo raid, we had the advantage of going in and essentially looking around. If bin Laden wasn't there, we'd run. No shots fired, nothing. The Paks would complain some but we'd just say it was "an important intelligence gathering mission." Obama wouldn't be embarrassed and could very, very easily downplay the whole thing. So this writer and others need to do a lot better job of selling the idea that Obama took the riskier path.

"They had been against practically everything George Bush did from 2004 to 2008. I never saw anything like it. As someone who studies and teaches history, foreign policy, and the Middle East, I watched in great frustration as Democrats opposed things they had always supported when their guy was commander-in-chief, and no doubt would again, once back in the White House. They slammed away at George W. Bush, scourging the man, roasting and toasting and turning and skewering, politically crucifying him. It was ugly -- and so unjust. Finally, after eight years of Bill Clinton, we had a president who cared not a whit about polls, completely giving himself for what he believed was right, and liberals torched him."

Mr. Andrew Cline refers to the lack of proof of Obama's birth as a cancerous lie. Mr. Cline one question please. If the latest from your favorite disassembler is genuine how could it possibly refer to our President's father as being a citizen of a country that didn't exist at the time of our President's birth? Or is it just that you don't want to talk about it any more? Of course this country of origin business is just one of the many "truth tumors" found on the latest practical joke of a birth certificate.
Mark Shepler| 5.5.11 @ 11:43AM
We are told Obama demanded we send troops in to capture or kill Bin Laden expressly so the world would know it for good and all. Implicit in this version is the acknowledgement that pictures, videos, autopsies, dna reports and all the usual modern proofs simply will not suffice to bury the legend. For us or the primitives, Team Obama doesn't say. Then, supposedly in a shallow, misguided respect and comedy of errors for the religion of the mass murderer we immediately dispose of the body where the world can never find it again and deprive ourselves the very proof that was deemed so necessary not more than 24 hours before and for which we placed our men at grave risk.
Now, out of even more obscure reasoning even the pictures are deemed too inflammatory and we're not to see them either. Of course, as anyone could've predicted, anyone but our authorities, the icing on the cake is "muslim scholars" say the whole burial at sea thing is not islamic and an affront. Imagine that. So the very thing that was meant to be avoided, irrefutable proof of Osama's death, has become the crux of the matter by the deliberate decisions and miscalculations of those who claim they saw it as the crux all along. And all of this is thought by these geniuses to be the path to putting the whole Osama matter to rest.
Good luck with that.

Despite all the rounds he took, they somehow managed to miss his head. I refer to John Dillinger. The Feds proudly displayed his carcass, just like a trophy head on the wall. Head shots are a different matter, however, and those who so eagerly want to see them reveal a gory side.
Of greater concern is the complaint that Osama was unarmed and should have been merely arrested instead of riddled with lead. It seems unlikely he only took one shot to the head If they didn't empty an entire clip in him I would be surprised. But so what?
They should have killed his bitch, too, because any brat she produces will be just another potential terrorist. Not killing or capturing her was clearly an act of forbearance.

For a almost a decade the world has been asking: "Where is Osama"? Now the world is asking every other question but "Where is Osama now"?
Under our feet this very moment is a subterranean world. The Hebrew Scriptures refer to it as the pit, the abyss, the nether parts of the earth, Abaddon.... No, it is not Hell. Hell is not yet. The Judgment must come first. The name of this present shadow land is called Sheol. And within it a place reserved for those who "caused terror in the land of the living."
"Asshur is there and all her company... all of them slain, fallen by the sword... which caused terror in the land of the living" (Ezekiel 32:22-23).
"There is Elam and all her multitude... fallen by the sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living" (Ezekiel 32:24).
There is Meshech, Tubal, and all her multitude... they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen... which are gone down to Sheol with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living" (Ezekiel 32:26-27).
There is Edom, her kings, and all her princes, which with their might are laid by them that were slain by the sword: they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with them that go down to the pit" (Ezekiel 32:29).
"There be the princes of the north... with their terror they are ashamed of their might; and they lie uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword...." (Ezekiel 32:30).
"Sheol from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us? Thy pomp is brought down to Sheol, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee" (Isaiah 14:9-11).
