Inside the Palestinian Unity Deal

Bypassing Israel to hook up with the terrorists of Hamas.

Last week’s agreement between Fatah and Hamas to form a unity government in the Palestinian Authority (PA) came as a shock to many Middle East observers — including those who have long advocated their political reconciliation. The two factions have been at each other’s throats for years and the last agreement proved to be of limited durability, culminating in Hamas’s coup in Gaza in 2007. Although there have been several attempts to form a unity government and break the Palestinian political stalemate, those efforts have failed. Why it succeeded now reveals much about how the PA views the peace process and should have far-reaching implications for U.S. policy.

Many have long argued that a unity government would make it easier to negotiate a Palestinian-Israeli peace. It was assumed that this would paper over the fact that both Palestinian politics and governance are divided between Hamas-ruled Gaza and the Fatah or PA-ruled West Bank. The problem with this logic is the assumption that peace remains elusive because the PA is not sharing power with Hamas. On the contrary, there can be no Israeli peace with a PA that includes Hamas because it is a terrorist group committed to Israel’s destruction. Those who argue that Palestinian unity is the key to negotiating peace base their case on political expediency with the naïve notion that Hamas will either reform or moderate itself as a part of the Palestinian government. However, the “Palestinian National Accord” agreed to in Cairo last week does not require Hamas to recognize Israel or renounce terrorism — in fact it did not require any compromises from the terrorist group at all. Given the longstanding animosity between Fatah and Hamas, it begs the question: why is it in Fatah’s interest to form a unity government now?

There are several reasons a unity government would appeal to both Fatah and Hamas and much of it has to do with the magic month of September 2011. On the internal Palestinian political dimension, the decision clears the way for long overdue parliamentary and presidential elections. Mahmoud Abbas’s presidential mandate expired in 2009 and earlier this year the PA announced plans for elections in September. Without an agreement between the two factions, previous calls for elections have fallen flat, a casualty of the apparent irreconcilable differences between Fatah and Hamas.

But the larger, external issue revolves around the PA’s international campaign for gaining recognition as a state by attempting to pass a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution and requesting admission into the General Assembly as a member state. The UNGA convenes in September and both Fatah and Hamas have likely calculated that it will be easier to plead their case to the UNGA if they can demonstrate that recognition of their statehood would encompass both the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Of course, should this effort at the UN succeed, any agreement between the two factions would probably unravel since their differences are ideological and insurmountable over the long haul. This temporary marriage of convenience is about elections and gaining statehood — without negotiating with Israel.

It is in this light one should view PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s comments last Thursday where he proclaimed that Hamas’s inclusion in the government would not undermine peace efforts. “Politics are for the PLO, which means [it’s] for me, and the government will work according to my policy,” he said. Yet it is Abbas of the PLO, PA, and Fatah — not Hamas — who has made an art form out of walking away from negotiations with Israel. What this new agreement means is that Abbas has made the determination that the path to statehood requires no compromise from Fatah either, let alone Hamas. In fact, it does not even require negotiations with Israel.

The formation of a Palestinian unity government should necessitate a review of American assistance to the PA. Since 1994, total U.S. assistance to the PA has topped $3.5 billion, with an average of about $400 million per year going to the PA while headed by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, much of it aimed at improving governance and security in preparation for eventual statehood. If Hamas is in the government, why should the U.S. foot the bill for helping to create a new terrorist state? American taxpayer dollars that have previously helped pay for the training of Palestinian security services should be withdrawn as well. After all, the training and funds were designed to prevent terrorism and contain Hamas. And how would Abbas be able to order the crackdown on Hamas operatives in the West Bank if they are his partners?

Fatah’s decision to embrace Hamas, abandon negotiations, and pursue an international recognition of statehood represents a major setback for Palestinian-Israeli peace. The Obama administration — like the Bush administration before him — should publicly disavow any Palestinian government that includes Hamas and should make clear to Abbas that the only path to a Palestinian state is through a negotiated settlement with Israel.

(If you march not forth, He will punish you with a painful torment and will replace you by another people; and you cannot harm Him at all, and Allah is Able to do all things.)

(Oh you who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are close to you, and let them find harshness in you; and know that Allah is with those who are Al-Muttaqun [the pious].)

(And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism, i.e. worshipping others besides Allah). And the religion (worship) will all be for Allah Alone (in the whole of the world). But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allah), then certainly Allah is All-Seer of what they do).

(And make ready against them all you can of power, including steeds of war [tanks, planes, missiles, artillery] to threaten thereby the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others besides them whom you may not know, [but] whom Allah does know. And whatever you shall spend in the Cause of Allah shall be repaid to you, and you shall not be treated unjustly.)

(So be not weak and ask for peace (from the enemies of Islam while you are having the upper hand. Allah is with you, and He will never decrease the reward of your good deeds).

(So do not become weak [against your enemy], nor be sad, and you will be superior [in victory] if you are indeed [true] believers.)

(And if you are killed or die in the Way of Allah, forgiveness and mercy from Allah are far better than all that they amass [of worldly wealth].)

(Think not of those who are killed in the Way of Allah as dead. Nay, they are alive, with their Lord, and they have Provision.)

(Verily, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties for [the price] that theirs shall be Paradise. They fight in Allah’s Cause, so they kill [others] and are killed. It is a promise in truth which is binding on Him in the Taurat [Torah] and the Injeel [Gospel] and the Qur’an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? Then rejoice in the bargain which you have concluded. That is the supreme success.)

(Indeed, We have sent Our Messengers with clear proofs, and revealed them the Scripture and the Balance [justice] that mankind may keep up justice. And We brought forth iron wherein is mighty power [in the matters of war], as well as many benefits for mankind, that Allah may test who it is that will help Him [His religion] and His Messengers in the unseen. Verily, Allah is All-Strong, All-Mighty.)

(Verily, We will indeed make victorious Our Messengers and those who believe [in the Oneness of Allah—Islamic Monotheism] in this world’s life and on the Day when the witnesses will stand forth, [i.e. Day of Resurrection]--)

(And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers and make no distinction between any of them [Messengers], We shall give them their rewards; and Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.)

(Verily, those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messengers and wish to make distinction between Allah and His Messengers [by believing in Allah and disbelieving in His Messengers] saying, “We believe in some but reject others,” and wish to adopt a way in between.)

(They are in truth disbelievers. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating torment.)

(It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter they should have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he has indeed strayed into a plain error.)

(The Messenger [Muhammad [pbuh]) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and [so do] the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. [They say]. “We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers” and they say, “We hear, and obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return (of all”).

([This is the] Revelation sent down from the Lord of the Alamin [mankind, jinn and all that exists].)

([He is Allah] Owner of High Ranks and Degrees, the Owner of the Throne. He sends the revelation by His Command to any of His slaves He wills, that he (the person who receives revelation) may warn (men) of the Day of Mutual Meeting [i.e. the Day of Resurrection].

(And to warn those [Jews, Christians, and pagans] who say, “Allah has begotten a son [or offspring or children].”)

(No knowledge have they of such a thing, nor had their fathers. Mighty is the word that comes out of their mouths [i.e. He begot sons and daughters]. They utter nothing but a lie.)

(“He [Isa {Jesus}] said: “Verily, I am a slave of Allah, He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet;)

(And when I (Allah) revealed to Al-Hawariyyun [the disciples of Isa [Jesus] to believe in Me and My Messenger, they said: “We believe. And bear witness that we are Muslims.)

(Such is Isa [Jesus], son of Maryam [Mary]. [It is] a statement of truth, about which they doubt [or dispute].)

(This is the truth from your Lord, so be not of those who doubt.)

(Look, how they invent a lie against Allah, and enough is that as a manifest sin.)

(And on the Day of Resurrection you will see those who lied against Allah [i.e. attributed to Him sons, partners] their faces will be black. Is there not in Hell an abode for the arrogant?)

(Will they not turn with repentance to Allah and ask His Forgiveness? For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.)

(And what think those who invent a lie against Allah, on the Day of Resurrection? [i.e. Do they think that they will be forgiven and excused! Nay, they will have an eternal punishment in the Fire of Hell.] Truly, Allah is full of Bounty to mankind, but most of them are ungrateful.)

(Your Ilah [God] is One Ilah [God-Allah, none has the right to be worshipped but He])

(“And indeed, We created man from dried [sounding] clay of altered mud. And the jinn, We created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire.”).

(And I have created the jinn and men only to worship Me).

(And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.”)

Evangelicals invite demons to possess their bodies so they can communicate (Speaking in Tongues) with Satan and they are so menacingly stupid; they actually believe demonic possession is acceptable because the demons (ghosts and spirits) are “Holy Spirits” and “Holy Ghosts”; but Christians also believe that Jesus lives through them by eating his corpse; however, they are too deluded and dumb to understand that what they eat, they defecate; reducing their Jew god to human waste. The most famous demon-possessed Evangelical is the treasonous, lying, winking, and racist, bible-belt witch and mother of a teenage tramp, Sarah Palin. Sarah and her equally racist and deluded, Tea Party followers want to take America back from Barack Obama; this foolishly “racist” platform is an indication of Sarah’s lack of knowledge of American politics; as everyone in the world knows that Barack Obama kneels at the Jew’s hooves and kisses their deformed butts just as Sarah does. If the treasonous witch wants to take America back, she will have to take it back from her maniacal, monkey masters; AIPAC, the hostile fire species who is presently controlling America. Sarah stated during her failed Presidential Campaign that; “America should not question Israel”. Sarah, if President, would be perfectly content to allow the homicidal high school dropout, Megan Deir, head of the bungling Mossad; continue to control America’s Military Industrial Complex and decide what wars America will continue to launch and lose. Additionally, Sarah is campaigning on an “American Values” platform. What is Sarah’s definition of “American Values”? It’s when your unmarried, teenage, tramp daughter keeps her b-astard child instead of aborting it. The only place Sarah will lead her racist followers is to the Hell-fire.

If the world’s leaders are stupid enough to continue to follow America’s AIPAC controlled “lead”; they should use all of their political capital and money to prevent Sarah Palin the lying Evangelical racist witch from becoming the next president of the USA. The world is aware the US Congress and US Senate can be purchased by the highest bidder, as America is a Jew-owned marketplace and everything is up for sale, including American politicians. Gary Peters, Ted Poe, Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid, are willing to sell their votes to the highest bidder; as these AIPAC, butt-wipes latest High Crimes and Misdemeanors was to sell out their own President and align themselves with the occupying war criminal, Benjamin Netanyahu, for the sole purpose of thwarting peace in the Middle East. Again, I urge Christians to read the Qur’an and avoid all things “Holy” i.e. “Holy Spirit”, “Holy Ghost” “Holy Communion” and the “Holy Bible”, as Christians will discover On the Day of Resurrection, the most insidious word known to mankind is the word “holy”; as this is the word their Jew masters used to preface the evil acts they commanded their Christian slaves to perform in the “Holy” Bible i.e. beating their children. The Jew’s forgery of the “Holy” Bible has reduce it to an instruction manual (How to Serve Your Hostile Jew Masters for Dummies) for those dumb enough to be a Christian. Christianity only benefits the Jews in the life of this world and it will be of no benefit to anyone in the Hereafter; but will be the justification for an eternity of torment and humiliation in Hell-fire for those who call themselves Christians. You Christians have two options; you can continue to follow your oppressive and greedy jinn masters aka Jews to the Hell-fire from which their father Israel aka Satan was created and will return; or you can follow Allah, the God of your father, Adam, to Paradise, from which he was created. This just isn't helpful. It isn't an issue for Israel as much as it is for millions of Palestinians who will - once again - be subject to tyranny, poverty, and misery. At one point, there was real hope that Jewish settlements might live alongside, peacefully, with Palestinians on the West Bank, not because of political or religious accomodation, but because of rising living standards and the advent of a Palestinian middle class living under the rule of law.

I think the jury's still out on Egypt -- there's a strong secular class there that is prepared to resist alnd with the Copts, God bless and save them. As for Gaza and the West Bank, there's not even a positive outcome I can envision. If I could turn the clock back and I were Israel, I would have kept greater Jerusalem and a few other important spots on the West Bank, and given the rest right back to Jordan when they were still interested in it. Egypt, of course, refused to take Gaza back, so I'm not sure what I'd have done with that hellhole of a place. But the problem, of course, for Israel, is how to remain Jewish and democratic while holding on to these territories. I wish the Israelis well but don't see a good end game in this mess.

Abbas has ssigned his deal with the devil Hamas at a curious time. If the Assad government falls in Syria, the mullahs in Iran will begin to feel escalating internal pressure, and if that happens, Hamas's two big sponsors may be imperiled. (Always hard to know how these "democratic" revolutions in the Arab world will turn out, or rather, which group of non-democratic elements will seize control.) It's a gamble for Abbas, but it's hard to see a scenerio in which he comes out ahead...or even alive.
