The disparity in job opportunities for men in America has both economic and societal consequences.
Long-term trends in the labor market have been particularly brutal for men, but our Washington policymakers appear to be either unaware of such trends or to have ignored them for the most part. Over the past decade, the total number of jobs for women went up by close to a million. Meanwhile, men lost more than 3 million jobs. From 1960 to 2008, the average unemployment rate for men 25 years and older was 4.2 percent. In the last two years, it has more than doubled, shooting up to 8.9 percent. By contrast, unemployment for women of the same age and for the same period of time went from 4.7 percent to 7.2 percent, an increase of 52 percent. The disparity is more striking if one considers that women’s rate of participation in the workforce has risen sharply since 1960 while the percentage of men in the job market has been shrinking.
One reason that men’s employment rate lags behind is that there has been negative growth in the types of jobs men historically have occupied. In the last 10 years, 5.5 million manufacturing jobs were lost. That’s one-third of our manufacturing base in an industry where men make up 70 percent of the workforce. In construction, where 87 percent of positions are filled by men, more than 1.4 million jobs went away during that time frame. Approximately 4.4 million jobs have been added in the education and health care sectors, but women dominate this growing field as they make up 77 percent of the work force.
It’s working-class men, not those who occupy elite positions in finance and government, who are suffering. The hemorrhaging of manufacturing and other well-paying jobs in America means that a rising number of young American men face dwindling prospects for earning a middle-class wage in the future. Young male unemployment is at 19 percent. More than 15 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans (most of whom are male) were unemployed in January 2011. African-American males also have been hit hard. Ten years ago, both African-American men and women had the same unemployment rate of 8.2 percent. Since then, the men’s rate has more than doubled and now is almost four points higher than the unemployment rate for women. Similarly, Hispanic men now have a 1.7 percent higher unemployment rate than Hispanic women, whom they historically have outperformed.
With growing numbers of out-of-work young men comes a volatile mix of negative social outcomes: they are less likely to marry, less likely to be a stable parental force for the children they father, and more likely to engage in violent behavior.
One would think that Washington policymakers would see these developments as a cause for concern. Nonetheless, for more than a decade, they have looked the other way as good American jobs have been shipped overseas, outsourced or have simply gone away. Ironically, our business tax system incentivizes our companies to export jobs and prosperity overseas. Also, our government welfare system all but discourages an intact family of a father and mother by the way it distributes money.
All levels of government now have special programs designed to make sure that women and minority-owned businesses receive preferences in landing government contracts. Under the Historically Underutilized Business program in Texas, a Pakistani-owned business or a Sri Lankan-owned business have a built-in advantage over white-male-owned businesses in competing for government contracts.
Virtually every group seems to qualify for a preference in these set-aside programs except for white males. This is the case even with white males who have had their own educational and class barriers to overcome.
Pointing this out has long been off limits in polite company, but Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., recently broke the taboo. In an opinion piece published in the Wall Street Journal, he called for an end to the government’s preferential treatment programs with the exception of those programs designed to assist African-Americans. Webb noted the especially galling practice of making recent immigrants the beneficiaries of these diversity programs. In other words, not only are we shipping good jobs overseas but we are giving preferential treatment to those moving here from overseas.
I agree with Webb’s conclusion: “Our government should be in the business of enabling opportunity for all, not in picking winners. It can do so by ensuring that artificial distinctions such as race do not determine outcomes.”
As for the loss of male-driven manufacturing jobs, there is a common-sense solution to this problem. It is known as the Hartman Plan, and it replaces our onerous corporate tax system, with its 35 percent tax rate and its 6.2 percent employer portion of the payroll tax, with a revenue-neutral, 8 percent business-consumption tax that would be border adjusted.
This new approach to taxing business would raise just as much in revenues, if not more, than the current system of taxation. All goods and services coming into the U.S. would pay the 8 percent tax while all exports would receive a comparable tax credit or tax abatement as an offset to its company’s business-consumption tax. Suddenly, the U.S. would become competitive again with our trading partners. And we would bring jobs home to America, particularly in industries where male unemployment is so high.
The disparity in job opportunities for men in America has both economic and societal consequences. It is a lot more difficult to be a responsible head of a household and help in the creation of a stable family environment if the father has lost his job or finds himself unable to make a living wage for the support of his family. That is why economic policies to help rebuild our hollowed-out manufacturing sector and the phase-out of government preference programs that put men at a disadvantage in finding jobs or starting businesses need to be part of an overall strategy to put America back to work.

This is what happens when the government picks the winners and loser in the work place.
The next consequence is why fight for a country where you have little if any job rights? If you're a white male you have none.

Excellent point about the military, Bill.
I truly don't look forward to gangs of unemployed men roaming the streets looking for trouble. This is a sad state of affairs in what used to be the best country in the world. I have visions of A Clockwork Orange...we seem to be headed toward British socialism and all its awful ramifications.
MikeD| 3.7.11 @ 11:01AM
The phenomena of motorcycle gangs is one major result of the thousands of American Veterans returning to a poor economy from the Vietnam War. These men, predominently White, returned to a society that literally spat on them for their service to their County and called them all sorts of vile names like "Baby Burners" and "Monsters". As a result, they found others like them and banded together for protection from a society that not only refused to recognize their service, but villified them for doing their duty. That they were predominently draftees was conveniently forgotten.
Of course, the spitters and name callers were the same treasons animals now in senior positions in government, academia, and, most damaging, the media. Frankly, we need a purge of "Stalinesque" proportions to weed these America hating losers. (like our current alleged president?) out of positions of authority.
Another historical artifact is the 70s practice of sticking minorities that companies were forced to hire under affirmative action into places they THOUGHT would do less damage, like finance and personnel; now called human resources.
So, they got in the door and brought in their incompetent lefties with them. We're now harvesting the terrible results of the seeds sowed back then. Any thoughts, oh wise readers? (With the exception of the trolls!)

And sort of hidden or not spoken of much in this quota system is the fact that in millions of cases, white men are artifically lowered in skill sets while women and minorities are often artificially reaised in their skill sets.
So many white men and increasingly now white women are underemployed. But we still give work visas to 360,000 engineers and doctors to work in America every year. Many have theri visas extended for 10 or more years meaning there are many millions of foreigners taking the top posts that used to go mostly to CAPABLE white men and now also white women are being increasingly discriminated against - see my post below on PolCorr rankings.

These problems didn't just happen. They are the inevitable and easily predictable consequences of conscious choices we made in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.
Over these decades we - with the best of intentions - chose environmental activism over smokestack industry; rigorous workplace-safety rules over common sense precautions; and in the name of "citizen participation" we enacted a Byzantine labyrinth of land-use rules and regulations that allowed anyone with an objection - based on real or imagined evidence - to impede any building project from a neighbor's shed to a nuclear power station.
This didn't just happen; it wasn't imposed by some diabolical outside agency; we did it to ourselves. The good news is we can undo it too, if we choose to do so.

Tanasha, you gals didn't "level the playing field." Chivalrous white males did that along with other men who had their own political motivations for supporting the feminist and so-called civil rights movement.
Indeed, as the author points out, it's not only so-called evil white males being put in their place, but also minority men. I've sat on juries with black women who said outright that they had the right to hit men, and not get hit back, because of chivalry and then griped that women were all victims of "violent" men. (Hint: If you don't want to get hit back, don't hit!)
Regarding President Obama, he's half white. Does that mean he's half murderous? Leftist race politics doesn't make a lot of sense and that even including Webb's attempt to say the obvious. Why should blacks, in particular, continue to get racial preferences and not descendants of Native Americans? Why should a black immigrant get entitlements while the descendants of native born Hispanics who had their land taken from them in California be ignored? The whole race entitlement game is so complicated that it's unworkable.
And then there's the notion of women as victims because of historical sexism. At the same time, these women are now considered victims of men no longer able to live up to sexist standards (breadwinners and providers.) Nobody needs to tell Obama's MOTHER about that! How many child-support checks did SHE cash?
All of this is part of a way of thinking that certain members of political special interest groups should have everything handed to them on a silver platter without any responsibilities. They want the newest IPhone to show off to their friends, but don't want the factory to make it located onshore. They want cheap fast food, but don't want to pay the workers decent benefits. They want to go to work when it suits them, but don't want to pay for daycare or nannies so millions of children wound up as latchkey kids or in the hands of underpaid illegals.
Tanisha, let us know when you're the primary breadwinner of a two parent family with children growing up to become responsible citizens in a society that is economically and environmentally sustainable. The 1950's was clearly a better society in that regard than the artificial one you live in and is well on it's way out.
I remember the white guilt male elites jumping for joy when Obama was inaugurated in 2009. They said it was because they thought utopia was at hand but the reality was it meant the end of white guilt for them. Remember David Dinkins? How did THAT turn out for NYC?

Deborah D | 3.7.11 @ 3:26PM
Tanasha -- I believe you really should check out how the left exploits women. This movement cares nothing about you.
This is an excellent column from a former leftist in Berkeley. She says: "The American Left certainly has a long history of exploiting women. For instance, during the 60's, Leftist girls were expected to, according to the slogan: Say Yes to Boys Who Say No [to the Draft].
"Much of the Left's dirty laundry has been expunged and reconstructed, particularly regarding its treatment of women. But women have always been viewed as the movement's maids -- and their mattresses. In the 60‘s, radical girls were expected to serve the food, as well as service the men sexually.
"Activist Stokely Carmichael articulated the general vibe in an infamous, and candid, response. When asked the role of women in the Students for a Democratic Society, Carmichael replied, 'The position of women in the movement is prone.'
"Radical women were brainwashed to believe that they needed to sacrifice their bodies for the Revolution. The women of the Weather Underground, for example, were required to have sex with any male who asked for it."

The "Chickifcation" of America continues under the guidance of Obama. Women are in many instances smarter than their low browed compatriots, but with the sell off of manufacturing jobs in the USA, there is no small wonder males are on the out and out. There are some jobs suited for women, and there are some jobs suited for men. Unfortunately, those suited for men are "gone." We could but the male work force back to work. Start the drilling, start the nuclear plants, start any industry that speaks of real fuel. But no, Obama wants us to be greener and kinder to our environment. Where will that leave the brutish males? Drawing a check from the government that's where.
MikeD| 3.7.11 @ 9:01AM
Good post Louis. I'm so eternally infuriated with barry the muslim that I simply cannot avoid ascribing ulterior motives to everything he does. But, you do bring up a good point in that many of the more physical jobs have been eliminated by the lefties and libs. That does not, however, mean that they are not still needed.
We have sufficient fossil fuels to provide for our own energy needs for more than 300 years at current consumption. But barry sees that as a negative instead of a positive. By drilling fast and constantly, we'll solve our own energy problems and reduce unemployment in the area that needs help most.
Having said that, don't hold your breath. Barry's hatred for everything American is on constant display. He must grin from ear to huge ear when he sees the damage he's causing.

Senator Webb's comments mirror what has happened in the company I work for. White males have been actively discriminated against, not by specific edicts, but because every other group of color and women have preference. It is time we take the big step. NO preferential treatment for any group regardless of race, religion, sexual preference, etc. That is the principle this country was founded on, let's get back to it.

Have seen the same discrimination often myself.
I think the politically "correct" ranking as seen by the left has changed over the years.
Here's how I see it from top to bottom and the reasons why I see it this way.
Islam - on top and above homosexuals because they are more militant than homosexuals
Homosexuals - giving them preference is a great way for the elites to weaken the nation
Hispanics - growing faster than blacks and cannot be taken for granted yet by Dems
Indians - Too small a group to get a higher ranking
Black women - Women over the men but all blacks are taken for granted now by Dems
Black men - taken for granted
Asians - Sort of a small group and almost "white"
White women - would be higher but it is now seen that there are too many conservatives among white women so as a group they can still threaten.
this to me is the biggest surprise of all when if from the way it was 20 - 35 years back
White men - I think nobody can argue that white men are on the bottom.

The western world has progressed from subsistence economy, to agrarian and cottage crafts,to manufacturing and mercantile, to maintenance and services, and finally to what I call a Knowledge economy. As so many on this thread point out, the dictatorship we live under makes war upon the business success of any and all who do not vote for them, and by giving free reign to the "environmentalists" maximum effort to prevent commerce in natural resources which drive up the cost of living strangle growth which would lessen public dependency that empowers them. And while liberal social engineering and counter discrimination has frozen white men out of occupations they dominated, it has produced the desired result their government wants; no ambition or desire for prosperity on their part. I have friends in the construction trades who are unemployed with masters licenses who cannot get business licenses and hang out their own shingles because they refuse to kick back to local and state bureaucrats for the privilege of working. But the pedestrian assembly line worker has been in denial for ages. His day is done and will never return because he would rather die than think. Yet he is the man the regime despises most of all, as they see in him the fat, dumb, happy wastrel, who's content with earning enough to pay off the pick up truck, the bar tab, the barbque beer busts and occasional tickets to the games. Even though such men once sustained this country, they get spat upon by the ruling class because they haven't had a candidate who wanted their vote since Pat Buchanan got run out of the Republican Party. And though they may be undeserving of any sympathy, there are tragic overtones in what has happened to them.

Guys (and gals), this whole article reminds me of the saying about a blind pig finding an acorn sometimes.
The connection between socialism and feminism and vice versa, masculinity and conservativism has been well known for some time now. Conservatives helped create the problem with a form of hyper chivalry: That women should be protected and pleased at all costs and that the whole world should revolve around to please them. That even conservative women should have their parents spend 6 figures to send them to a university so they can get a perfect career and then, in their late 20's, start looking for a husband. The result is that they often have slacker sons and unmarried spinster daughters.
Tanasha's ability to "beat" men requires the same kind of rules women play in golf: Extra yardage and men playing with their hands tied behind their back. Only if Tanasha gets white gloved (pardon the pun) treatment can she PRETEND to be "equal" to a man and even then, she'll probably gripe about how tough her life is when she makes a mistake and demands someone else (a father of a bastard child or the taxpayer) foot the bill.
Sooner or later, it can't go on like this forever. There simply isn't enough money for a society to treat EVERY woman like Scarlett O'Hara. In the former USSR, the system collapsed and that was that.
Pat| 3.7.11 @ 1:10PM
Kinda old news for many of us, but our tame Liberals and their partners within the media are becoming alarmed, no wait, make that very alarmed over the economy of late. The San Francisco Chronicle editorialized last Friday they have recently learned that whenever California borrows billions to fund state employee pensions and such like, Californians will have to pay hundreds of millions in interest on the debt. Needless to say, the Chronicle was shocked to learn this. And the New York Times is pondering out loud whether the Feds should run huge budget deficits – could that be good for our economy in the long run? And, unlike whether to have an abortion or not, the folks at the NY Times now admit there aren’t any easy answers to that question.
Is there a new trend emerging here – what can be happening with our tax and spend Liberals? Even the Democratic National Committee is having second thoughts these days. Just the other day at their weekly Executive Meeting they voted to give the token white guy a raise. Turns out he’s pretty good as tokens go, doesn’t complain, works the normal 5 hour shift, eats tofu for lunch and is mindful of his place in the DNC hierarchy. Women, of course, occupy the top rungs of the DNC pyramid and as their spokeswoman so eloquently put it when their “official” Oppressed Black Man complained: “Listen, Jamal, women have been oppressed for 5,000 years, so quit whining about what happened 200 years ago”.
With the help of Obama’s Stimulus money, the DNC’s Executive Suites were recently refurbished and now women employees use either the Men’s or the Women’s eloquently tiled restrooms at will - but, during the renovation, they couldn't help but notice that no white men were employed by the construction company, which could possibly explain the 6 months delay in completion and the huge cost overrun. What if men, especially white men, have come to believe they no longer receive a fair shake from their beloved country? What if they begin to avoid combat roles in our Armed Forces, what if they request traffic enforcement duty rather than SWAT team assignment down at the station house – this could become serious, there could be voter blowback here, there could be pendulum swings, reactionary political protests – oh my!
So, the DNC’s Executive Committee would like everyone to know their white guy received a very generous raise, that they stand fully behind returning men to work and they really and truly mean it - even if that means cutting back a little on the latest Full Employment for Women Stimulus Funds legislation. Men, please say you’re impressed.

This is "old-fashioned" but it's true (read Titus 2, among other references to true "womanhood"). Men hold down the jobs, women hold down the fort. How can a man even nobly acquire a calling when he is battling the women for the job he needs to support a wife and start a family? Don't be fooled with what will inevitably come from the union fallout (a majority of the jobs lost will be those held by women, and not in the teaching field necessarily) and the resurgence of the tired feminist agenda. Our country is falling apart not necessarily economically (that is a symptom); the disease lies within our society having traded biblical truths of complementarianism with the lies of "equality", and we are reaping the harvest of those lies we have sown. This woman doesn't believe she is lesser to stay home and raise a godly generation; it is her honor and duty before God, as a co-heir to her husband of the riches of God's abundant grace as we follow Him and realize the blessing and the Truth.

Well said.

Webb is wrong to say we need to exclude all but African-Americans. He's just trading one bad idea for another. And what good is the 14th Amendment if all we do is play our violin to the myth that it was never resolved? Here we are in a land that has the greatest celebration of freedom and liberty ever known to mankind, and we're still whining about the color of our skin, our gender, and who's making more money than us. We're getting everything we deserve as a result of wrong ideas. When will we stand up and take care of ourselves? We might be surprised that no one else will have to do it for us.....

“It may readily be conceived that by thus attempting to make one sex equal to the other, both are degraded, and from so preposterous a medley of the works of nature nothing could ever result but weak men and disorderly women.” ~Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America
(c 1800s)
Enough said.

This destruction of men can't continue forever.
Sooner or later, men will wake up. And the latent male attributes--leadership, determination, aggression, strength--will manifest themselves.
And then there will be hell to pay.

I hope for it too but I think it will only come once there is much hunger, anarchy or both. There will be a cleansing of some type before this happens and I think it will be a bloody one.
I hope I am wrong but I the good men are too busy providing for their families still. They are the ones getting discriminated against more than not and they will not act in enough numbers until push comes to shove mostly because they are good, not because they are cowards.

Lots of jobs for young white males if you aspire to be a moron in a TV commercial.

Or a stupid weakling extra in a movie. One punch from a woman will knock him out cold.

Just look at Zero and his mandingo warrior Meeechelle to get a sense of this emasculation and living stereotypical post modern black racist couple. They are such beautiful examples on so many levels - they are the ones they were waiting for!

The only one who "gets" this who might be a contender in 2012 is DONALD TRUMP. The rest of them seem to be part of the Free Trade Fraud. He alone has spoken about the loss of jobs, how we make nothing anymore and what a threat it is to our country. Right now what this country needs is someone who will get us moving economically again. Someone who has the background and experience to create. He points out that China is wiping the floor with us and laughing all the way to the back. Both Bush and Clinton did not dives a monkey's arse about the job loss in America. Out a lot of people back to work and you'd be amazed at how many problems resolve themselves.

Hahahaha! The Donald worships Obama just like McCain and his daughter. He may get past a primary, but he would lose in a general election.
I just watched The Apprentice last night and Trump clearly emphases that the only thing he cares about "making" is em-oh-en-eee-why. If he can save a penny on sending a job overseas then he would do it (even if that penny ultimately generates more costs at home for someone else such as the taxpayers.)
Anyone living in California could vote for their own version of Trump: Carly Fiorina. She was the gal who trashed HP by outsourcing the company to India. She lost the election by a landslide.
