The Obama Watch

Beware the Jabberwock

A President who will gyre & gimble in a quasi-capitalist wabe.

There will be no more talk of unhelpful Republicans sipping slurpees as the president and his progressive friends work up a good, honest sweat trying to haul the automotive equivalent of the ship of state out of the nearest ditch. There will be no more mention of the “millions of jobs” that were supposedly “created or saved” by the trillion dollar DOA “stimulus” program. There will be less pie-in-the-sky posturing about the enormous potential of green technologies. Mostly happily of all, there will be no Nancy Pelosi as House speaker. We won’t see her constantly popping up and down in the upper right-hand corner of our television screens — a deranged jack-in-the-box, screaming her approval every time the president pauses for an applause line.

All that is to the good. Nevertheless, I, for one, am groaning at the thought of tonight’s state-of-the-union address. Do we really want another exercise in presidential rhetoric, self-aggrandizement, and detachment from what remains of a functioning real world?

When he ascends the podium this evening, Barack Obama, in his Pan-like manipulation of different guises, will be at pains to show off his new business-friendly persona and bona fides. For a president who spent a large part of his first two years in office denouncing “fat cat bankers,” greedy businessmen, and the profit motive, this will be the beginning of a calculated flirtation with free-market capitalism. To borrow John Ehrlichman’s phrase from the Nixon and Watergate era, he is seeking “a modified, limited hangout” with free-market capitalism in the run-up to the 2012 general election.

Mr. Obama would like us to believe than he is the impartial arbiter of all science and knowledge — regardless of the thinness of his résumé before and, even more, since his elevation to the presidency.

No doubt we will hear (in the chummiest of tones) some of the great ideas that the Commander-in-Chief of Economic Affairs has picked up from some of his big business corporatist buddies on how to increase U.S. competitiveness, boost exports, work toward a balanced budget, and begin to make a dent in the high and persistent unemployment that has been the hallmark of his presidency.

But so what? Does any of that amount to a hill of beans against the immense damage that has been wrought by two years of manic government overreach and disregard for the will of the people as expressed in their opposition to Obamacare and other extensions of intrusive and all-too-obviously incompetent government (passing impenetrable 2,000-plus page bills into law that no one had the time to read… even if the bills themselves made any sense, which by all accounts they do not)?

Britain’s Margaret Thatcher got it right when she said: “The right way to attack unemployment is to produce more goods more cheaply, so more people can afford them.” Obama, of course, wants to go the other way. He prefers to reduce production and productivity and to increase cost and prices (cf. the administration’s policies on energy, the environment, and health care, as well as its desire to lengthen unemployment benefits to the point of permanency and to get rid of the requirement for secret ballots in union certifications), so that more people (and more voters) are hopelessly and forever dependent on government hand-outs.

The president can (and no doubt will) jabber on about business and his businessman friends. He can pay lip service to the idea that business is the great engine that drives economic growth and job creation. He can wax poetic on entrepreneurship and innovation. He can talk about need for greater business/government “partnership.” While keeping a straight face, he can even talk about the need for reducing the regulatory burden on businesses.

Just don’t expect him exhibit any real sympathy for, or even any basic understanding of, free-market capitalism. It is contrary to most everything he believes in. It goes against the progressive/Obamanomic grain. Their mentality is all in favor of government mandates, income redistribution, government-controlled, single-payer health care, and the expansion of the welfare state. By contrast, free-market capitalism is built on the pillars of freedom of choice, private property, open competition, and individual responsibility.

There’s more than a disconnect here; there is a fatal opposition and hostility. Obama’s recently adopted brand of faux capitalism (no less than the more openly expressed anti-capitalism of the recent past) would drive a knife into the heart of the real thing. As the dying Mercutio says of his stab wound in Romeo and Juliet, “Tis not so deep as a well, nor so wide as a church door, but tis enough, t’will do.”

The nation will look on as several members of the Supreme Court do not return to get publicly insulted by an immature power driven man child.

In that sense Obama will reap what he as sown.

The Obama SOTU will be full of self inflated pomp and circumstance, all lain out carefully to make him look like a moderate.

How will you know he's lying? He will show up and his lips will move.

The Supreme Court justices have it right. Simply boycott this idiot.

Booger | 1.25.11 @ 8:21AM

From the desk of President B. Hussein Obama:

To: Keith Olbermann

Dear Comrade Olbermann,

I realize you are currently seeking new employment and thought that this might be a good opportunity for you to show Me what you can do for Me in My Struggle. I have prepared a rough outline of my State of the Union Speech, and would like for you to go over it and tell Me what you think. I realize that you are an ivy-league trained journalist with years of broadcast experience, so I would greatly appreciate any input you might have. If you serve Me well in this endeavor, I might be able to hook you up with a speech-writing job in my cabinet

Your Leader in The Struggle,

President for Life B. Hussein Obama

SOTU draft:

Dear Comrades and amerikkkan citizens,

As I begin another new year as President, I am pleased to announce that My job performance continues to be stellar in all areas. I have saved the economy, rebuilt amerikkka's prestige in the world, brought about the Blessing of Universal Health Care, protected amerikkka from terrorists and bridged the civility gap in our culture. Please listen closely as I elaborate.

First of all, My stimulus project has completely re-invigorated the amerikkkan economy. As I stated at the time, without my stimulus bill the unemployment rate would have gone to twenty-eight percent. That it now stands at only nine percent, give or take, is a huge success on My part, since the rising rate was all Bush's fault to begin with. I might add that without My stimulus plan not only would GM have failed, but so would Ford, Saturn, Honda, Kia, and Toyota. After all, if GM had gone under, people would no longer have trusted cars, so they would not have purchased vehicles from anyone. Thus, when I saved GM I saved all those other companies also. Just ask Paul Krugman, he is really good at explaining how that works.

As for amerikkka's prestige, what can I say? After George W. Bush Jr.'s cowboy antics, the respect for this country in the rest of the world was at an all-time low. I want to assure you that the Presidents of China, Saudi Arabia, Russia and France all assure me that they have much more respect for amerikkka now than they did when Bush was stirring up trouble all over the globe. I look forward already to reading the history books explanation of how I brought amerikkka up from the pit it has inhabited so long, to the sunlit vales of world harmony with our brethren in Cuba, Venezuela, Iran and North Korea. Truly I am a glorious peacemaker!

My Great Healthcare Initiative will soon be recognized for the civilizing achievement that it truly is. Once the government can control your healthcare, I can control everything. I can tell you what to eat, how much to exercise, that you cannot smoke, drink, or have unsafe sex; I can make you do whatever I decide is in the best interest of your health. After all, if I have to pay your doctor bills, then I control any and all actions that might end up taking you to the doctor's office! Soon I will be able to make you over into the people you should be instead of the wretches you are.

Likewise, with the help of Janet Napalitano and Eric Holder, I have been able to crack down on domestic terrorism, especially amongst the Tea-bagger brigades who have blatantly defied my authority and attempted to derail my agenda. Their terrorist activities, which are second only to those of the anti-abortion movement, remain the greatest threat to our domestic tranquility and the rebuilding of amerikkka. I assure you that I will remain ever-vigilant against the Tea-bagger threat, and will continue to have the IRS, DOJ and BATFE monitor and corral their terrorist activities. I am confident that by this time next year I will be able to report that their menace has been completely defeated.

Of course I have restored civility to the national discourse as well. While My opponents are a boorish and vituperative lot, I have remained above the fray, rightfully aloof in My true superiority to the little people with their little thoughts, little words and little actions. I am so amused by your littleness that I can hardly contain Myself, nevertheless I will for the sake of civility. After all, if the only things you have to say are negative, then you bitter-clinging, ignorant, racist, homophobic, islamophobic, anti-choice, redneck, religious zealots should just keep your filthy mouths shut. We need more civility in this country, not your divisive name calling.

In short it is obvious that I am the Best President Every, a True Blessing to this unworthy country, The Leader in The Struggle that will bring about the New Realm which will be so much better than this current tarnished globe... Read the rest here.... http://beautifulletters-bls.bl.....te-of.html

Details aside, Booger, you've got the rhetoric down pat.

Whenever I hear the Professor talk, I'm reminded of a series of self-descriptions penned by the North Korean communist dictator Kim Il-sung shortly before launching his entire army against the south in June 1950: "the respected and beloved leader . . .a great thinker and theoretician responsible for the guiding idea of the revolution of our era . . .a great revolutionary thinker who has worked countless legendary miracles . . . a matchless, iron-willed brilliant commander who is ever-victorious, as well as the tender-hearted father of his people, embracing them in his broad bosom."

One fancies that the Professor must indeed think of himself as a man with a broad bosom.

I see The American Spectator's resident cuckoo never fails to pop out of the clock at just the right time. Go Cuckoo Man go!

Redstateboy| 1.25.11 @ 2:44PM

You referring to Vtwin? As for that picture on this article..? it's creepy.. it's like Nazi Pelosi is some Demon approving of her creation... EeeUuu!

Alan Brooks| 1.25.11 @ 3:38PM

Obama's speeches are at least better than McCain's speeches. You know McCain, don't you?
He is the guy you wanted to be in Obama's place.
You run "quasi-capitalists" yourself!

You fool no one.

carnot| 1.25.11 @ 6:46PM

ummmm...Obama is anti-Capitalist.

quit conflating concepts.

Alan Brooks| 1.25.11 @ 9:54PM

But you still think McCain would have done better than Obama if McCain had won? (heavy emphasis on 'would have')
True I can't offer any evidence Obama is doing better than McCain would have done, but you can't do the same in defending McCain.
And it is relevant, as if you judge Obama so harshly, one can do the same to your candidates whether they get elected or not.

RCV| 1.25.11 @ 8:52PM

Six Justices, lead by the Chief, will attend -- the very same number as last year. The attendance level is actually quite high. Some years, only Justice Breyer has attended. In 2000, none of the Justices attended.

Deborah D | 1.25.11 @ 6:35AM

I don't plan to listen to his speech. Unless another congressman stands up and says, "You lie!" -- it will be difficult to sit through all the BS this man is so good at spewing.

Groad | 1.25.11 @ 9:14AM

As in the past, I won't be tuned in. I would prefer not to raise my blood pressure to fatal levels.

This may be the only "shovel ready" project the O has.

I also have no interest in watching a bunch of congressional weenies hold hands and sing 'Kumbaya' when the Oborg chief strolls in for his adoration.

Alan Brooks| 1.25.11 @ 1:02PM

"I don't plan to listen to his speech. Unless another congressman stands up and says, "You lie!"

You ought to know; you are a congenital liar too. You proved it yesterday on the topic of abortion: you want rightwing statism to replace leftism. Laws, expensive court system (it goes up in price every decade), etc.
Deborah, the smarmy rightwing statist.

Wayne | 1.25.11 @ 1:27PM

Are you stalking Deborah?

I Survived Arlen Specter| 1.25.11 @ 1:39PM

Someone adjust the clock. The cuckoo keeps popping out too frequently.

The Big E| 1.25.11 @ 2:30PM

Ya know Alan, you really should try to let go of all that hatred you have in your heart for people who aren't like you.

homebrewer| 1.25.11 @ 5:51PM

pffftt... Your words mean nothing.

homebrewer| 1.25.11 @ 5:52PM

Of course, I'm referring to the drivel of Mr. Brooks.

Occam's Tool| 1.25.11 @ 1:30PM

The Young Man is an idiot, not worth listening to. I'll read about it tomorrow with less time taken. I prefer to read Gibbon.

I Survived Arlen Specter| 1.25.11 @ 1:40PM

Occam's Tool, are you referring to The POTUS or Cuckoo Man Brooks?

Tim the Enchanter| 1.25.11 @ 2:04PM

I would guess both.

Alan Brooks| 1.25.11 @ 3:41PM

"Ya know Alan, you really should try to let go of all that hatred you have in your heart for people who aren't like you."

Hatred? like the hate you secretly feel for Obama? the Obama preferable to McCain, the guy the GOP tried to fob off?

Alan Brooks| 1.25.11 @ 3:46PM

...and if you don't hate, you sure as hell don't like him. The operating word is "hostile".
You would not be as dishonest as to say you are not hostile to Obama?
And if you aren't hostile to the president, you do a great job of faking it!

Appleby| 1.25.11 @ 4:20PM

Hate is an emotion. It fades.

Contempt, however, is forever.

The Big E| 1.25.11 @ 4:35PM

Ahem. Hey! Alan! Over here!

If you're going to respond so angrily to one of my posts that you can't even get it all in one comment, then at least calm down enough to respond to the post you're trying to respond to instead of picking on poor, innocent Tim.

I bear no hatred for Obama, and certainly bear none for those poor, misguided souls who voted for him in 2008. Including you. Though I admit I do not understand why you, and so many like you, go so stark raving mad every time you encounter someone who disagrees with you that you can't even concentrate enough to click on the proper button when responding to a post.

I am proudly hostile to Obama insofar as I am strongly opposed to his dystopic vision for our future. But I wish him no ill will. I just hope he gets his ass kicked in the next election, or better yet, gets his ass impeached before then.

But I digress. I believe we were discussing your deep seated hatred of anyone who is not like you?

homebrewer| 1.25.11 @ 5:53PM

pffftt... Again, with meaningless words...

homebrewer| 1.25.11 @ 5:54PM

...the meaningless words of the lonely Mr. Brooks, again.

carnot| 1.25.11 @ 6:48PM

nope. just reevaluating past mistakes....and coming to terms with the reality that a huge mistake was committed two years ago.

Alan Brooks| 1.25.11 @ 10:00PM

I did not vote for Obama in '08 because I didn't know enough about him. But I WILL vote for him next year-- as I see you merely want to replace leftwing statism with GOP statism (the two Bushes & Dole as the most obvious examples).

Lawrence Boccardi| 1.25.11 @ 7:05AM

Well written, but no surprises. Two observations; I remain troubled by the naivete of the "undecided", that accounts for Obama's bump in the polls. What the hell is wrong with these folks? Secondly, not much I can do about Obama, but I'll be watching the people I sent to D.C., very closely.

old white guy| 1.25.11 @ 8:41AM

i would love to know who was polled to get obama over the 20 percent mark. i get the feeling that all polls related to obama are as false as the man himself.

Redstateboy| 1.25.11 @ 9:29AM

the "undecided"? they're addicted on Hopium.

Appleby| 1.25.11 @ 7:08AM

Not going to bother with this; its as futile as watching the Toronto Maple Leafs play (or attempt to play) hockey. I am sure there will be Mythbusters re-runs on Discovery Channel that will be much more entertaining.

Melvin| 1.25.11 @ 7:32AM

Yes Barrack Obama will be on the podium but Bill Clinton's hand will be stuck up Barrack Obama like a sock puppet telling him what to say.
Ever since those two meetings that Barrack and Bill had in December, Barrack is portraying the illusion of being in the middle, hence the bump in the polls.
As some of noted we are witnessing Bill Clinton's 3rd term. For those moderates, independents, young idealists, or whatever they classify themselves as, are now peeing all over themselves in orgasmic joy of, "See we told you God was going to come to the center. "

Wayne | 1.25.11 @ 1:28PM

Yes, but we know who will be getting the coffee.

Dan Smith| 1.25.11 @ 7:32AM

He has done as much damage as he needed to do. From a political perspective, I remain amused at how he conned his fellow Democrats. Like sheep to the slaughter they went, following his program. Yet he remains standing, and many of them have taken their last official flight at Ronald Regan airport.

MoeBlotz| 1.25.11 @ 7:45AM

The chosen One hopes to make the scene brillig so that we peons will not be able to see the borogroves for the slithy toves. Ignore the SOTU address at your peril. Listen so that you know first hand where our battle lines must form. Also,so that youse can laugh at the alphabet network analysis.

coal carrier| 1.25.11 @ 8:12AM

And what is all this hype about Democrats sitting next to Republicans? Oh, this is to show us that both sides are going to work together now. I don’t believe that for a minute.

The real reason for this arrangement is that when Obama gives us some phony line about the economy, jobs, green technology or education and the applause begins, it will look as though the entire congress is behind him. I am really disheartened that the Republicans fell for this old time propaganda technique.

Redstateboy| 1.25.11 @ 8:31AM

I wrote both my Senators and Congressmen expressing in no uncertain terms - we gave you an Historic election and I want the World to SEE the numbers and how the American People rejected Obama and his Party's European Socialist vision for This Country. I suspect.. when it comes down to it... much of this talk of sitting together will be that... just talk.

Ken (Old Texican)| 1.25.11 @ 8:17AM

Moe,
I'm sorry. I will have to read the transcript of the speech.
I simply canot abide a man lying to my teeth.

We have screwed up, America, and we are going to pay the price.
I hope and pray that the House of Reps, realizing that they are BACK up for re-election in 2012, can keep their finger in the dyke.

Do not be misled, this man is a socialist, and for him to suddenly give up socialism is not in him. The teleprompter will whirl, the audience will swoon, and the MSM will trip all over themselves, including the tingly legs that quiver. This man is a charlaton, and for us to expect honesty is as useless as a phart in a whirlwind.

I can't watch for one simple reason: I laugh.

I laugh at how serious he takes himself. I laugh when he talks ---thinking about how other Libs take him seriously. The man has taken the highest office in the world----and he is a joke. Just can't watch someone I have 0.0.0.0 respect for. He didn't work his way into office, he cheated. His past is hidden from our sight on purpose and we know why. It is damnable.

It is just a chuckle that comes when I hear a dumb remark---which is pretty much everything from this NAMBLA manchild.

I don't have faith in the American people overall (as his poll numbers are over 50), I have faith in a handful of Americans that the light will be shone on this charlatan in some way.

Who knows, maybe even Rezko? (one can hope for a tell-all or an indictment)

Eventually the truth will come out. It has with all past presidents. The Libs can rewrite history all they want, but today we have information lightning fast and it is their own words that have inch by inch, destroyed their own credibility. Youtube has ended more Dem careers than NYT has ended Repubs.

New York City has 12 million residents and NYT has an 800k circulation. The Newspaper of Record, All The News That's Fit to Print can't even get more than 7% of NY to subscribe. That is being generous considering that it is a national newspaper, i.e. people in other cities get it as well.

It doesn't matter what he says tonight-----look at what he has done the last two years---or even in the Senate and Il Senate.

The man is a pathological liar and has been diagnosed by many experts as less than well mentally. Perhaps even physically.

It won't be so much what the Lying Liberal Media say about him, it will be the likes of the Fox All Stars and such that take this Fake Speech seriously. Man up (or woman up) and call him a liar. BOR interviewing him pre-Superbowl? (groan). Unless he comes out swinging Brett Baier style, it will be remembered as a** kissing and BOR's audience will dwindle. Huge career gamble here Billy.

Who cares what he says tonight? It's all lies, fakes, and most of all, he won't believe it either. Ever seen a person with passion, courage and conviction speak? I have.

He has neither of those qualities---just anger. After his term is up, he will be forgotten. Like Kennedy, Carter, FDR, Clinton, and LBJ, the LSM will prop him up as some savior. Go right ahead. Your 7% audience are eagerly awaiting.

He will be the Sony Walkman president. Remembered, but dumped in the trash because it serves no useful purpose today.

So as the U.S.A.Titanic sinks under the crushing weight of debt, Captain Obozo will talk about "investments", despite the fact that the Trillions of $ previous allocations have been wasted and misspent. " Investments" with money, we of course don't have. Only political hacks invest with borrowed money, don't you?
And of course, Obozo will not rest until jobs are created ( for the 5th time). Biden will be standing in the backgound holding up three fingers while mouthing the words THREE LETTERS: J O B S.
Meanwhile, the Republicans will be holding hands with the Democrats to demonstrate civility. Perhaps just prior to the speech, they can all stand in a circle, holding hands singing "Nearer my God to Thee". It's way too late for Kumbya.

Will he tell us honestly the "state" of the Union?

That is all the Constitution asks -- an honest assessment of how things are and suggestions to fix any problems. Instead, we will get a campaign speech and out and out lies about our condition. No mention of the unemployment rate and the policies causing them; no mention that TARP and Stimulus are Iron Curtain failures; no mention of the unconstitutional czars undermining the free market with non-delegated police powers; no mention of the sky high energy costs due to the weakness of the dollar; no mention of the printing of money (QE2) that will usher in inflation; no mention of the oppressiveness in the air (no pun intended) instilled by the TSA; no mention of the historical record compensation of government employees; no mention of the hundreds of companies waivered from ObamaCare to continue covering their employees; no mention of the threat of Islamic terrorism; no mention of the war in Afghanistan. In short the best speech ever, even better that the last greatest speech ever.

Just remember Obama words have no meaning especially to Obama.
His words are meant as brushstrokes in an artwork of political camouflage.

Clint| 1.25.11 @ 11:57AM

Tonight, Obama gives his " Let's Fool The Suckers Again" Speech.

Like Da Man Say, " Take a shot of whiskey every time The Keynesian Boob says 'Job Creation' & 'Investment' & you'll be faced when The Bloviation is over".

Tim the Enchanter| 1.25.11 @ 2:14PM

This president is a disgusting burlesque. He is a shameless liar. He SHOULD be watched....but not tonight...and not by me.

RCV| 1.25.11 @ 12:16PM

The reality is that the political winds have already started to shift back in the President's favor. His poll numbers are up, and Palin's have plummeted. The national mood seems to have changed after Tucson, as the GOP in Congress has already recognized with their "take a Democratic buddy to the State of the Union" move.

As he did in his Tucson speech, the President will gain further traction with the speech tonight.

Clint| 1.25.11 @ 12:39PM

Obama Propagandists are whistlin' past the graveyard.

" Home prices are falling across most of America's largest cities, and average prices in eight major markets have hit their lowest point since the housing bust.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index released Tuesday fell 1 percent in November from October. All but one city, San Diego, recorded monthly price declines.

Eight others sank to their lowest levels since prices peaked in 2006 and 2007: Atlanta, Charlotte, N.C., Las Vegas, Miami, Portland, Ore., Seattle, Tampa, Fla., and Detroit, which saw the largest drop at 2.7 percent from the previous month.

Millions of foreclosures are forcing prices down, and many people are holding off making purchases because they fear the market hasn't hit bottom yet. Many analysts expect home prices to keep falling through the first six months of this year.

"With these numbers, more analysts will be calling for a double-dip in home prices," said David Blitzer, chairman of S&P's Index Committee."

When asked about the petition (only four sentences in length) at www.petitionproject.com in which thirty one thousand four hundred eighty seven scientists (31,487) of various fields in physics have signed their name publicly and debunked as nonsense manmade global warming (as opposed to the two thousand five hundred anonymous political hacks (2,500) at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change at the United Nations) this was our resident lecturer RCV's response:

"I don't sign silly petitions on science matters."

Consider the source when accumulating knowledgeable information while arriving at as intelligent and honest as possible political positions.

If the orator-in-chief has been truthful the past month then he was lying the past two years.

If the orator-in-chief has been truthful the past two years then he has been lying this past month.

Either way he is a liar. Can you imagine the damage he can do in a second term of four years where he is no longer accountable to voters ever again?

And, poll results given by media should be qualified by providing the exact wording of the polling question(s) used in the poll otherwise the results are meaningless.

Ken (Old Texican)| 1.25.11 @ 12:39PM

RCV,
you have no excuse if your credentials are as you have stated them.
You simply have no excuse.
Mr. Obama will propagandize once again tonight as he lies to the teeth of the people who are stupid enough to watch.
Sir, my only other thought is that you must be laboring under a ton of "success guilt". You have parasited the system for forty years, and now you are bent on breaking our economy...since you got yours.

RCV| 1.25.11 @ 12:51PM

No, Ken, nothing you say is accurate -- as usual. I've earned every penny I made. I love my country dearly, and unlike you, I don't spend my days tearing it and our government down. The American people will watch tonight. You can sit and sulk all you want.

NavyBrat | 1.25.11 @ 1:05PM

Hey dude. You can love your nation & not like your gov't. & how its being run. After all, didn't Hillary tell us that dissent was the most patriotic thing that an American can do?

Spare us your faux concern over the Constitution. If you gave a shat about it, then you wouldn't applaud a law that gives the gov't. the authority to MAKE you buy something. Tell me where that & the idea that we need to give societal leeches like you free health care.

RCV| 1.25.11 @ 1:40PM

You're not giving me "free" anything. And, yes, you're free to dissent from any policy you'd like to - it's one of the many things that makes our country great. You don't "have to" buy health insurance - you just pay an extra tax penalty if you don't. There's a lot of things you have to do in a complex society that you may not want to do -- buy car insurance, wear a motorcycle helmet, clear brush around your house. That's life in the 21st century. Get used to it and stop whining.

V8| 1.25.11 @ 1:49PM

No, I can choose not to drive and not buy car insurance. Same for a motorcycle helmet. I can pay somone to clear the brush. Your comparing apples to oranges. Please explain to me how the goverment can mandate I buy health insurance? And don't give me any BS about regulating interstate commerce. The goverment is obligated to provide for the common defense too but liberals heads would explode if the goverment demand everyone buy a gun.

Ridiculously Corrupt Venality| 1.27.11 @ 5:35PM

Occam's Tool| 1.25.11 @ 1:47PM

Come on, RCV, Ken doesn't spend his time tearing the country down, I know I don't, and neither do you.

We have a difference of opinion. In my view, I would like to keep the ladder of success free and clear, and view Government as the problem in doing this. I suppose, from reading your stuff, that you are in favor of Big Government.

Otherwise, you seem like a nice fellow. Myself, I'm a Conservative, not a Libertarian. Government does have a place killing scum, locking up bad people, delivering the mail to North Pole, AK, and building roads. Education, to the extent it furthers National Defense, also falls under its purview (to that limited degree.).

Honestly, that's about it, really. One can argue about a "safety net," I suppose. But, in the words of PJ O'Rourke, "any government spending should be on issues you're prepared to see your grandmother shot for. If she doesn't pay taxes she goes to jail, and if she tries to escape she's shot."

OK, so some aspects of Medicaid and Medicare, maybe. But NPR and NEA? No way.

Occam's Tool| 1.25.11 @ 1:37PM

My poor friend RCV,

You seem like a nice guy, so I'll try to keep my schadenfreude to a minimum when the elephants trample over your picnic.

RCV| 1.25.11 @ 8:54PM

Redstateboy| 1.25.11 @ 2:33PM

RCV... put down the Hopium.. Obama is a complete failure as a President and (cough, cough) "Leader"

May be you'll share with us that great success.. the 1 Trillion $ Porkulus Spending Bill and all the good it did.

The Big E| 1.25.11 @ 2:46PM

Sorry RCV, but I must disagree with your analysis. The national mood has changed because the 112th Congress has now been seated, the nightmare which was the 111th Congress is a thing of the past, and people are no longer in fear of what hideous, 2000 page mandate will be handed down from on high next. Don't believe me, check the approval numbers for Congress; as soon as the 112th was seated the Congressional approval rating rose more than Obama's has.

Why would this raise Obama's approval? With the 111th gone, people generally feel better about things because they feel safer, and while most of those people are no friends to Obama, some of the so-called moderates can now go back to liking him because it makes them feel better about themselves. It's got nothing to do with anything Obama has done, and certainly has nothing to do with what happened in Tuscon.

RCV| 1.25.11 @ 7:09PM

It has much to do with Obama, but you are definitely onto a very cogent observation: The people always feel better when power is divided because past experience shows we get better government in such cases -- as during both Reagan and Clinton's terms. I'm as optimistic as anyone that the term will see some good accomplishments.

Doctor Right| 1.25.11 @ 12:25PM

RCV| 1.25.11 @ 12:52PM

NavyBrat | 1.25.11 @ 1:06PM

Like that "classy" guy who told the Tea Party leader in Tuscon, "You're dead"? You mean classy like that?

RCV| 1.25.11 @ 1:36PM

Gee, sorry the guy got a little unhinged since he was just shot by a maniac.

Occam's Tool| 1.25.11 @ 1:38PM

Usually, I don't threaten to kill innocent bystanders. The shooter was a maniac who could not be medicated thanks to the ACLU.

RCV| 1.25.11 @ 1:43PM

I'm no fan of leaving the mentally ill untreated. And that line of cases, as I've said before, was deplorable. But I'd expect better behavior of members of Congress than untreated mental patients. Maybe that's silly, but hey, it's just me.

Occam's Tool| 1.25.11 @ 1:51PM

Better behavior from members of Congress than untreated mental cases? Hmmm....well, I've seen a lot of untreated mental cases, and have experience with a lot of members of Congress. (I've lived in IL,CA,TX,NM,AL, KY, and MN---all places I have voted in---maybe not TX, as I think I was an Illinois resident still.)

My Dear RCV, I must respectfully, and professionally, disagree with you. Most of my patients are much finer people than members of Congress.

Occam's Tool| 1.25.11 @ 1:52PM

That caveat does not apply to you, RCV, should you be a member of Congress.

RCV| 1.25.11 @ 2:03PM

Thanks, my friend, but I'll pass on the opportunity.

dw| 1.25.11 @ 7:06PM

you mean like reading and understanding the full complexities of a 2000 page law before they pass it along party lines.

RCV| 1.25.11 @ 7:20PM

I can't resist responding to this oft-repeated silliness. I hate to break the news to all of you out there, but I guarantee that the majority of Congress now and in the past have seldom themselves read most of the legislation they vote on: that's what they have staffers to brief them on for. You may not like this, but it's the God's honest truth, and every honest Congressman and Senator will confirm it.

dw| 1.26.11 @ 8:35AM

The silliness is yours when you can not distinquish between most other bills and a bill that seeks to control 1/6th of our economy and was passed by a dictitorial socialist party without the debate it merits. So what you are saying is that "staffers" are running the congress...who's running obama?

RCV| 1.27.11 @ 12:15AM

No, the staffers work for the elected Representatives. They analyze and summarize legislation for them, meet with them to discuss the bill and answer questions. The Representative decides how he or she will vote. That's how it works and has worked for over a hundred years. Have you never been involved in a modern legislative process?

The Democratic party Congressmen and women are no more dictated to than their counterparts in the GOP, who actually tend to vote more in a bloc than the Democrats.

"The Labor Department says the unemployment rate rose in 20 states and fell in 15. It was unchanged in another 15 states. That's nearly the same as in November, when the rate rose in 21 states, fell in 15 and was the same in 14.

The report is evidence that the job market is barely improving even as the economy grows. Most economists expect hiring to pick up this year, although the unemployment rate will likely remain high.

Employers in most states didn't add any net new jobs last month. The number of jobs on employer payrolls fell in 35 states in December, the department said. Only 15 states reported gains. Layoffs have slowed dramatically in the past year, but hiring has yet to pick up. "

And to think Senator John McCain and a few other moderate Republicans are actually smitten with Obama's supposed "pivot to the center" governance, giving him resounding praise and admiration for, as yet, just simple "lip service" displayed by Obama thus far. During the first two years of his administration Barack Obama tried everything in his power to turn the United States of America upside down > from a free market Capitalist society = into one of a Socialistic state where the elitists in government have vilely looked down on the American populace as evidenced by the ramming of Obamacare down the throats of the American people "against" their will and by the suing of the State of Arizona for its citizens simply trying to defend themselves against "foreign" invaders and by Obama's efforts in trying to eliminate secret balloting from Labor Unions and by spending America into oblivion thus assuring China's resurgence onto the world stage as we, the United States, become ever more indebted and subservient to the Chinese - who hold a majority of our debt in their hands and the United States of America being ever more at China's mercy because of it, needless to say. Which is no doubt what Barack Obama ultimately wants in my opinion. Obama hates capitalism, in my opinion, so what better way to assure America's capitalistic destruction and demise than for a 'communist' country like China to take America's place as "number one" on the world stage? He who controls the vast reserves of currency i.e. China, eventually will control the world and the people in it, including the United States. Obama has already demonstrated his obeisance to China's Hu Jintao by bowing to him thereby quantifying Obama's subservience to this communist dictator. At the State dinner for Hu Jintao Obama also allowed chinese pianist Lang Lang to play a song that demonstrably mocks the United States of America. No other President in our history has demonstrated such abject repugnance to the country he was elected to lead and serve yet Obama instead vilifies and some would say even hates.

Also, Obama high five's dictatorial thugs like Hugo Chavez and highly reveres Marxists like Saul Alinsky, which indeed, Obama has structured his whole administrative agenda around Saul Alinsky's book "Rules for Radicals" as his means and methods to attain his devious ends... that of making America into a Socialistic/Marxist/Communistic entity through and through if he could have his druthers in my opinion. Where the American people will eventually be viewed upon as mere peasants in the eyes of the ruling class elitists whose Commander and Thief happens to be none other than Barack H. Obama II - the very same man who spent millions of dollars of his own money to keep his birth certificate and other personal identifiable information secret from public scrutiny - to this day. Why? Because he obviously has something (many things) to hide no doubt. But it is what it is and we're unfortunately stuck with this secretive usurper unless he happens to get impeached in the near term. If not, we're resigned to another two years of economic malaise, high unemployment and market uncertainty thanks to the certifiably "inept" Obama administration who appear to be "winging it as they go" even as the empty suited POTUS - Barack Hussein Obama - leads the way. God have mercy..

Mark Levin really got to the heart of the matter on his radio show yesterday. Obama hasn't changed his ideology one iota. He is merely trying to change his "image" and perception before the American people, who hopefully will see through the sham and continue on with their concerted efforts to oust Obama from the White House in 2012 regardless. Here is the link to Mark Levin's radio broadcast from yesterday for those interested: http://rope.zmle.fimc.net/play.....242011.mp3

The insanity of the Progressive Left and their failed programs has been international verified over and over again, financially, culturally and historically. There simply does not exist any success on their side. None!

Their system of rule is always self-destructive to those people who have carelessly embraced their lies, always hurting more people than it helps.

But the Left already knows all of this. The Left knows their form of government will always fail. They are simply selling the same old lies in order to prevert the Constitution and rob the people for their own personal gain. They are, each and every one, "robbers" of personal freedom. And they really don't care, as long as they win and the rest of us lose to their advantage.

Actually, anybody with a brain knows these historical facts. Anybody with a brain knows that the best rule of government, no matter how imperfect, has been that of a small government with the greatest amount of Liberty for it's people and markets, that latter alone which establishes social value through capitalism. Socialism has never prospered, except for the "robbers" that tyrannically control it.

However, despite these truths, the insanity of the Right is likely far worse, since despite the known history, Republicans continue to believe that Leftists like Obama will swing to the center without still advancing their cause and depressing freedom ever further.

Despite the fact that all of Obama's Rule has not changed, even though his latest rhetoric may appear so, the Right still fall over backwards to give Obama the benefit to the doubt.... ignoring the past and present reality-testing skills which incontravertibly attest otherwise.

Perhaps the "current" Right is more stupid than insane, but it's certainly not a banner that I would campaign under. I for one won't trust them until we get rid of everyone that disregards the Constitution of the USA!

And I certainly won't trust what Obama will say tonight... Been there, done that.... No longer! I will not even tune in. There's nothing to see here.... just move along! And it's not that we've lost interest. Not at all.... As we tuned in for 2010, so will "We the People" be tuning in for 2012! We will then clean both houses and the Executive Branch of those that are stupid and/or insane!

Like many others on this post, I will not watch Obozo on the TV tonight. He's a liar and incompetent, is completely over his head in his position, and simply doesn't understand how capitalism works. He believes the government should control just about everything, and that we're somehow better off for it, it's unbelieveable. If one simply looks at this country's history, they could very easily see that we didn't become who we are today because the government led us here--we did it because for the first 150 or so years of our existence we were unburdened by government over-regulations and bloat. I would also add, that NONE of the Socialist governments in Europe that Obozo would like to turn us into have accomplished anywhere near what we've done in the US. I guess that makes us exceptional?

Surely, this is just venting pent up frustrations and not the real opinions of the writers… if so, most of you are daft.
All politicians “lie.” We have few statesmen left, but sometimes, if you know anything about government, you must concede that the statements are not intentionally false. Sometimes they are, but if you have ever met a sitting POTUS (and I have met three sitting Presidents) the entourage won’t even let you give a business card or have a book signed. I’ve known the mayor of our city since I was a child, and when I attempted to pass a present to her—a mere mayor—an attendant took it from my hands and squirreled it away. So too goes the way of information with elected officials. Too much staff padding prevents personal knowledge acquisition.

The current President is no worse than the last. Some of you are childlike in your love of animal totems, but I am simply a fiscal, social conservative. No elephant or ass needed. Our policies have been broken for years and the bureaucratic layers that are supposed to buffer change have instead been preventing it completely. We need to adapt or we will go the way of the Roman Empire. Don’t cite Marx or Lenin unless you actually know what these writers posit. It highlights your ignorance of the world. If you equally chastised W for the creation of DHS, then we’re good. If you are singling out this chief representative of our nation because he’s a Democrat or has a different style than the leader before, you’re a superficial hypocrite.

Mathematically, the only way to cover the cost of our largest employer, the federal government, is to adopt policies that some liberals and Republicans alike will find unpalatable. You pay a guy $60k and then tax him $10k of that, then pay him $60k… what? Afghanistan has lithium, gold, etc. Why not take a commission and pay the troops bonuses from those resources for the schools and roads they’re already building? They get something valuable and we compensate without adding to the deficit and debt. Too much like colonialism? As a member of the brown demographic I may not agree with Newt’s college thesis, but America must be first. If we give Jordan (the country fools) $28 million for women’s rights instead of paying farmer Bill to alleviate his financial woes that lead to him mistreating his wife, then we should get some oil… Fewer personal attacks and more strategizing on this article and maybe we could formulate a working budget for the people in DC.
