More Evidence Liberalism Is Dead

Those wizards at the New York Times are their own worst coroners.

WASHINGTON — The evidence mounts that Liberalism is dead.

The Liberal wizards, working their wonders at the New York Times and its clearing houses in the major networks, cannot even dupe the American people with an absurd conspiracy theory anymore. In Dallas back in 1963 Lee Harvey Oswald, a pious communist awash in the Marxist-Leninist bilge, shot President John F. Kennedy. In no time the Liberals had the nation focused on the “dangerous right-wing atmosphere” supposedly pervading Dallas. Soon all the talk was of “the paranoid style” of American politics. Oswald was almost forgotten. Doubtless, today there are fervent Liberals living in haunts in Massachusetts and in Berkeley, California, who believe in their heart of hearts that the president was felled by Texas Republicans.

This time around an obvious lunatic shoots 19 people in Tucson, killing 6 (one of whom is a Republican judge) and wounding 13 (one of whom is a Democratic Congresswoman), and the Liberals try again. With artifice and craft they try to focus the nation’s attention on the “heated rhetoric” of the right. Sarah Palin is trotted out. The Tea Partiers are cited. The venerable Times editorializes, “… it is legitimate to hold Republicans and particularly their most virulent supporters in the media responsible for the gale of anger [remember the Times’ cosseting of the Angry Left back in 2008?] that has produced the vast majority of these threats, setting the nation on edge.” Today, however, the average American has had enough of this Liberal garbagespiel, and so in a CBS poll nearly six in ten Americans deny that the “country’s heated rhetoric” had anything to do with the shooting. Liberalism has come to the end of the line. It is a bore.

Yet what kind of person directs our attention to the meaningless madness of a lunatic, and tries to lecture us on the random concreteness of nouns appearing in the chaos of the poor wretch’s attempts at thought. The gunman, Jared Lee Loughner, mentions Mein Kampf. He mutters something about the gold standard. And my favorite — he advocated proper grammar, or perhaps he abominated proper grammar. He was not very clear. At least there was something about grammar. Hear! Hear!

Loughner is obviously a schizophrenic. I am no psychiatrist but I would bet he is a paranoid schizophrenic. That is the most dangerous kind of schizophrenic. What he says might matter to his psychiatrist but it has little significance to the outside world. Yet apparently it mattered greatly to Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman. On Monday he wrote in the Times: “Where’s that toxic rhetoric coming from? Let’s not make a false pretense of balance; it’s coming, overwhelmingly, from the right.” And he continued, “It’s hard to imagine a Democratic member of Congress urging constituents” to violence. Now Krugman has been a columnist for the Times for a long enough time, covering a sufficient variety of political events, for us to deduce that he is a political nitwit. Other Nobel laureates have been nitwits, for instance Lord Russell. There are a lot of political nitwits in this world. Perhaps the Times could give Krugman a cooking column. He would be their Nobel Prize-winning cooking columnist.

Of course, examples of Democrats speaking loosely about violence toward Republicans have now been piling up in blithe contradiction to this nitwit’s asseveration. The inimitable James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal cites Senator John Kerry joshing with Bill Maher about how “…I could have gone to 1600 Pennsylvania and killed the real bird [George W. Bush] with one stone.” Taranto adds that in 1988 Kerry had joked about the Secret Service being under orders, if George H.W. Bush were killed, “to shoot Quayle.” And he quotes then-Representative Paul Kanjorski in October saying (as Jeffrey Lord first reported in The American Spectator), “That [Rick] Scott down there that’s running for governor of Florida. Instead of running for governor of Florida, they ought to have him [sic] and shoot him. Put him against the wall and shoot him.” Mr. Kanjorski alleged that Mr. Scott’s transgression was stealing “billions of dollars from the United States government.” He was defeated in 2010. Scott was elected. Yet Kanjorski resurrected marvelously. On the op-ed page of the Times he appeared Tuesday counseling on the proper response to the Tucson shooting.

As I say, Liberalism is dead. This hitherto unthinkable effort to blame the unhinged act of a lunatic on the language of the right without respect to the often more inflammatory language of the left is a cry from the grave. Rigor mortis has set in, comrades, and even your president suffers. On the campaign trail in 2008 Barack Obama said, “If they [Republicans] bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.”

I am eager to read what Krugman does with broccoli.

Krugman looks like Dr. Evil in the picture where he's stroking the cat.

sane person| 1.13.11 @ 11:13AM

The reality is that the perverse metal masterbation called "conservatism" is dead. The editors of the Amer Spec are whores for a rich alcoholic benefactor in Pittsburgh PA whose only purpose in life is to stroke the fires of white entitlement for underemployed, lazy, undereducated, people being left behind in today's society.

dbri| 1.13.11 @ 11:24AM

What is masterbate and what does it have to do with metal? Or is this too "hard" a question to a great liberal thinker like yourself?

sane person| 1.13.11 @ 11:29AM

The reality is that the perverse mental masterbation called "conservatism" is dead. The editors of the Amer Spec are whores for a rich alcoholic benefactor in Pittsburgh PA whose only purpose in life is to stroke the fires of white entitlement for underemployed, lazy, undereducated, people being left behind in today's society.

Cpm| 1.13.11 @ 11:38AM

I'm glad you took the opportunity to identify yourself as "sane person" because nobody would ever suspect after reading your post.

mzk1| 1.15.11 @ 9:23PM

Bullseye! :-)

heres waldo| 1.13.11 @ 11:53AM

Obviously publicly schooled. Still waiting to hear what masterbation is...

Aqua Buddha| 1.13.11 @ 12:15PM

To "sane person":
To continue to do the same thing (or make the same ranting post) and expect different results is the definition of INSANITY.
P.S. Perhaps Loughner needs a cellmate?

heh| 1.13.11 @ 12:37PM

1. ...and what does "stroke the fires" mean? (a synonym for "masterbation," no doubt.)

2. What a surprise to learn that the institutional mission of AmSpec is, apparently, "entitl[ing the]...lazy, undereducated people being left behind in today's society?" Finally, AmSpec supplants "The Nation" as the leading mouthpiece for progressivism! Hoorah!

Dennis Hannon| 1.13.11 @ 12:46PM

"Stroke the fires"? Is that igneous masturbation, or rather "masterbation"? Between the two, I think I would choose the "metal masterbation." But whatever stokes your fire.

Sam Vaughn| 1.13.11 @ 1:09PM

Sane, by visiting this site and taking the time to comment are you not the one engaged in mental masterbating"?

Redstateboy| 1.13.11 @ 1:37PM

"white entitlement"??? Ask that 81 year old White Lady who got body slammed and robbed by that Black Animal in the NYC subway yesterday about "white entitlement" - Liber-ul swine.

dbri| 1.13.11 @ 2:14PM

Dude, it's masturbate, not masterbate. According to the urban dictionary.com, masterbate is a common misspelling used by retarded twelve year olds who are neglected by their parents and listen to Linkin Park.

Although your comments would still be inane even without the spelling errors.

your mama| 1.13.11 @ 3:00PM

That was excellent.

Ron| 1.13.11 @ 9:27PM

@dbri

You are hereby awarded one "Gold Attaboy" for your astute statement and excellent observation! Kudos.

Martin Treptow| 1.13.11 @ 2:30PM

Sane,
This is the most awesome post I have ever read. You are a glittering jewel of idiocy, a veritable colossus of ignorance. From your inability to spell to the phrase that begins with, "stroke (sic) the fires..." making zero sense in the English language (perhaps you write in Esperanto?) you give me, an 1890's Liberal Republican the same feeling I get when I look at the twentysomething generation in action in the business world: I've got job security until I'm ninety.

Troll.

Fail.

Cheers!

beebop| 1.14.11 @ 6:02AM

Sane's grammar and spelling would either send Loughner over the edge (as if) or cheer him up a bit. But. It certainly does go far to proving the madman's view ... whatever it was ...

Waapiti| 1.13.11 @ 2:47PM

"sane"

What is this fascination with sexual references (spelling errors aside)? I think you meant to post on an entirely different site.

AntiLiberal| 1.15.11 @ 11:19AM

sane person needs his arse kicked back into reality.

Widow Twanky| 1.13.11 @ 12:40PM

Sanity has entered a new dimension.

DWS in Weesss Virginny| 1.13.11 @ 1:01PM

Sane Person is speaking in leftist code. Metal masterbation is an arcane socialist term for bating masters who are holed up behind the factory gates (which are metal) after shutting out the workers. Also, only a rich alcoholic is about the only one I can think of who would be sufficiently insensate to stroke fire--ouch!!! But I'm glad that he is contemptuous of at least one kind of entitlement--providing evidence in support of Mr. Tyrell's claim that Liberalism is dead.

BD57| 1.13.11 @ 1:39PM

Troll alert ....

And a fool too, if you think your diatribe has any chance of persuading anyone of anything but that you are, indeed, a fool.

Kelso| 1.13.11 @ 2:34PM

"sane" person sounds to me like an individual working hard to corner the market on ignorance--and to some extent he is succeeding in a very competive field

PKAT| 1.13.11 @ 4:26PM

I'm not quite sure what sane person has in mind, is stroking the fires and masterbation a form of conanism? You harangue, we decide.

A.Men| 1.14.11 @ 10:22AM

Yawn.

TJ Jackson| 1.15.11 @ 6:17PM

I believe sane person is insane. Over the last 50 years liberalism has been in its death throes. Look at the past election, the states are turning conservative, the nation is center right and moving rightward. The lib can't handle it, so now it is reduced to propaganda, and even that is no-longer working due to the internet.

sans| 1.13.11 @ 1:07PM

What it appears like is all of you Dr. Evil's are scrambling around so hard to cover up the terrorist nature of the right wing and their foot soldiers - the Tea Party. Five Arizona Republicans resigned this week in fear of Tea Party reprisal after the shooting. You know of what I speak.

Conservatism is and has been dead since Reagan. Don't pretty up the word right wing terrorist organization by calling it conservatism.

The dark side of human nature has been whispering in your ears and you shall reap what you sow.

V| 1.13.11 @ 1:29PM

I agree that conservatism died at the end of the Reagan presidency. That movement has been hijacked by the likes of Palin, Mr. R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr., "Dick" Armey, Rush, etc. who are happily getting rich performing fellatio and analingus (even felching) on Mellon Scaife and the Koch family and creating so-called conservative propaganda to brainwash the monkey masses.

the Tea Party who are happily

Redstateboy| 1.13.11 @ 2:03PM

"I agree that conservatism died at the end of the Reagan presidency." Yeah... those recent Census numbers and Election that has more Republicans holding elected office since 1924 sure bares your logic out beautifully. Aside... Is Liber-ulism not a Mental disorder or what?

kalashnikat| 1.13.11 @ 2:59PM

Aw...mommy read over your shoulder and took away your internet privileges for a week, V?

Cpm| 1.13.11 @ 4:45PM

"V", you seem awfully familiar with the various sex acts you project on others, no doubt this includes teabagging.

missbosslady| 1.13.11 @ 6:00PM

V,

You are the coolest! You know names and words!

You fool absolutely no one. Don't you realize that your style of writing gives you away from the jump? You're a kid, with likely little or no life experience and it is reflected in the thoughts you vomit onto the internet. Don't you know, that people who actually know, will find you out immediately? Well, of course you don't know these things, it is evident in your post.

News Flash: Shock value does not equal intelligence and it has had it's day in the sun. If you think, that in the absence of anything intelligent to say, that you can throw out felatio and felching and everybody will stop and stroke their collective chins mulling your brillance, I think you have made an extreme error in judgement.

More acurately your post is more akin to flashing a neon sign that screams "I'm an idiot!"

kalashnikat| 1.13.11 @ 2:54PM

You do need help...soon...before you become another loughner...talk about projecting...that's you. We believe in freedom, hope, love and charity...the left, (and you) believe in controlling others, spreading the misery evenly, removing the opportunity and the incentive to improve ones self or to achieve...making everyone a worker ant except yourselves, and pretending that you are wiser, kinder, and more important than the other ants...sick, dude, you are sick.

kalashnikat| 1.13.11 @ 2:55PM

This is for Sans...somehow got in the wrong place, sorry.

sans| 1.13.11 @ 4:00PM

You are in the wrong place - America.

Thank you Jee- you have just removed any doubt (not that there was any) that you are a dimwitted idiot.

BTW, take your "advice" and stick it where your head is presently embedded.

vtwin| 1.13.11 @ 2:01PM

Shamus, most people looking at the picture of Dr. Krugman would see a man holding (not stroking) his cat but you see “Dr. Evil … stroking his cat.”

I think the term is transference: characterized by unconscious redirection of feelings about one person to another person.

Was it your father?

Redstateboy| 1.13.11 @ 2:05PM

vtwin... anyone who is demonstrably shown to be wrong as often as you are would lead me to believe you really don't believe your silliness either.

007| 1.13.11 @ 2:32PM

Was Dr.Krugman strokin' vtwin's pussy?

sane person| 1.13.11 @ 3:39PM

Well at least vtwin has a functioning sexual organ unlike a eunuch such as yourself who has lost all will and ambition to live and only serves his master's wishes.

007| 1.13.11 @ 10:40PM

Apparently, insane pussy is very familiar with vtwin's sexual organ.

Appleby| 1.13.11 @ 6:41AM

Doesnt anybody still have any photos and tape from Chicago in 1968? Any film of the mob of, er, poo poo heads chanting Hey Hey LBJ! How Many Kids Did You Kill Today? Anybody even remember 1968 at all? I was at universityback then and what I remember was the Free Speech Movement that seemed mainly to be about calling people inflammatory names, burning flags, and shouting Burn Baby Burn. Not a one of these people was conservative. In fact, in my Freshman class, the only conservative on campus was me.

Dan Hirsch| 1.13.11 @ 9:16AM

A'by;

You'll find them in our government, regulating us into their idea of 'proper' behavior, and eventually receiving a far better pension than 99% of the private sector workers...and now whispering "Burn, baby, burn, Sara, Rush, Glenn...!"

Look out, it IS coming unless we get involved and bring some real, POSITIVE change.

sans| 1.13.11 @ 4:02PM

What IS coming Danny Boy? Do you really think you can win? Think about it.

missbosslady| 1.13.11 @ 6:10PM

sans,

Whatever's coming you can't possibly think that the limp-wristed, perpetual adolescents of the left could win, do you?

Seriously, your side is ill-prepared in every conceivable way, the thought that you think you have a shot is laughable.

You mock all that you do not understand, and all that you do not understand will eventually find you lacking.

Personally, I have no fear of 20-somethings, with hairless bodies and scrawny physiques being guided by a mind equally immature. What's so scary about that?

Spook| 1.13.11 @ 9:35PM

November elections proves we win.

cyberdog| 1.13.11 @ 7:04AM

I hear the Krugman Cassarole is full of balogna and children love it for it's simpleness.

MrDan| 1.13.11 @ 7:17AM

The very act of trying to blame conservatives for this act of violence is absolute proof liberals have lost in the arena of ideas. They realized it from the November elections, and were waiting for any "crisis" they could use. It was a despicable act of desperation.

Ned| 1.13.11 @ 12:00PM

Libs haven't had a new idea since about 1903... but they keep rearranging the deck chairs, changing the labels and trying again... governing based upon simplistic emotion WILL NOT work, has NOT EVER worked... and yet, here we are, throwing our nation on the bonfire of vanities that is liberalism... and, yes, desperation covers it nicely... I'd add "virulent" to desperation though

JShizzle| 1.13.11 @ 1:35PM

To which liberals will respond (after engaging in name calling, character assassination and a few "nuh uhs") with platitudes about how the rich are to blame for their lot in life. Never any factual arguments, mind you. Never accepting that the recent election proves that more people lean towards conservatism in this country. And finally never realizing that they would be much, much happier in another country, say Cuba or Venezuela.

Kalashnikat| 1.13.11 @ 2:24PM

Nah...they wouldn't be happy in Cuba or Venezuela because they wouldn't have POWER in either place...they'd be workers, which is what they want the rest of us to be under thm.

Ron| 1.13.11 @ 10:09PM

They just adhere to the lessons taught by their idols and heros, Alinsky, Van Jones, Chavez, Castro, etc.

ADOLF HITLER

Gary| 1.13.11 @ 7:18AM

Mr. Tyrrell hit the nail on the head: “Liberalism has come to the end of the line. It is a bore.”
This is the worst possible landing place for those who have spent decades cooking up fresh anti-American rhetoric on a daily basis. As more and more responsible, tax-paying voters across the country turn away from these lunatics, the intensity of their sales pitch increases in lockstep with their panic.
Recall historic footage of Hitler ranting from a 50-foot stage, but, instead of the crowd being roused to a fever pitch, they just turn and walk away. Some day soon, perhaps we’ll hear the final, pathetic whimper.

sans| 1.13.11 @ 1:11PM

Interesting how one projects onto others what one recognizes in oneself and must deny in order to continue to justify oneself. The GOP, its foot soldiers, the Tea Party and right wing terrorists, are that one, Gary.

JShizzle| 1.13.11 @ 1:38PM

Huh. Citizens demanding reduced spending, focus on the Constitution and government accountability are now considered terrorists? Sans, you would really be happier in another, more fair country like Zimbabwe or North Korea.

sane person| 1.13.11 @ 3:43PM

JShitsile, it is clear that sans was explaining that conservatives in this society are inbred, hostile, uneducated, and unproductive lazy white people who believe that they are entitled to receive benefits from the Govt. Notice how the Tea Party is filled with white people who used to work for the Federal Govt.

Cpm| 1.13.11 @ 4:49PM

Well, here we are halfway down the page and you aren't getting any better.

missbosslady| 1.13.11 @ 6:18PM

Hilarious!!!

Post as 'sans' and defend yourself as 'sane person'. Yeah, that's a winner move. Good grief son, you're a dope, no one's gonna fall for that.

That's a lot of effort where intelligent dialogue would better serve and wouldn't require you to remember your multiple personalities.

Do you giggle after each post? I'l bet you do. Poor kid, you have no idea how much you do not know.

Lurker| 1.14.11 @ 1:55AM

JeffT| 1.14.11 @ 2:44PM

Just which side is it that spurred the protests against AIG executives at their homes in Connecticut? Who was it that trampled on the property of a BoA executive in Maryland and scared the bahgeebies out of his 13 year old son, home alone at the time? Who is it that precipitated the riots in France, Greece, Seattle, Pittsburgh, England, Spain? Not the right, not the TEA Party, not Sarah Palin, not Rush, not Glenn, not Sean. No these displays of "civility" were all perpetrated by the LEFT. That is the Left's M.O. always and forever. Foment violence, hatred and class warfare.

Times, Krugercowski, who are they?

Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 1.13.11 @ 7:47AM

"Doubtless, today there are fervent Liberals,.. who believe in their heart of hearts that the president was felled by Texas Republicans." You'd think that after almost 50 years, that one of them would have found the damn tennis ball already?

So Liberalism's dead? I'm not so sure about that!! If it really is dead, it's only dead in that Evil Freddy Krueger sort of way, and we'll have to kill it all over again, when the sequel(s) comes out in a few years, like they always do. Beware, don't fall asleep!!

Deborah D | 1.13.11 @ 12:04PM

LLL, You can't say "kill it" -- words (just words) matter, dontcha' know! :) Conservatives have to watch what they say because liberals can dish it out, but they sure can't take it.

I do agree that liberalism isn't dead -- we thought communism died with the fall of Russia and the Berlin wall coming down. It just went underground. I don't think it will die until the 60's radicals and those they have spawned are in the ground, and we conservatives start marching back through the institutions they took over while we were working. The Krueger metaphor is perfect.

sans| 1.13.11 @ 1:12PM

All it took, for them to call "The DOGS Off" is one..60-40 poll, telling them the NATION wasn't buying their narrative. The truth and facts just wasn't going with it. We have got to stop reacting to amature, incompetent LOSERS and wait while they self destruct.....this is a painful time for grown-up AMERICA .....It's like raising TEEN-AGERS.
Yes , Mr. Tyrrell the lights are going out for the LIBS.

Ken (Old Texican)| 1.13.11 @ 8:15AM

Mimi,
The fascinating thing to me is that CBS always runs a "liberal's poll" to start with. Announcing 60-40... heh I'm betting at least 70-30 across America.

sans| 1.13.11 @ 1:16PM

Oh, for a moment I could swear you were talking about right wing terrorism. That's what it sounds like to me. It seems that in its death throes, an entity will lash out and desparately try to believe that it is the other that is doing the dying. Right wing conservatism is that entity.

kalashnikitty| 1.13.11 @ 2:35PM

"Dying? I know you are, but what am I?" Sans, if you can't argue from principles, and can only call conservatives names, and use schoolyard taunts, you're out of your league using the internet...and the only preaching of bigotry, hate and violence I can see is from you and y0ur ilk against thosse who know and understand that America only guarantees equal opportunity to achieve, not outcome......

sans| 1.13.11 @ 4:04PM

Yeah I can see that. It abounds right here on this right wing bitch session you call an internet site.

davelnaf| 1.13.11 @ 8:11AM

It was not always the case, but reading a liberal blogger these days you get the sense that his effort is more about trying to convince other liberals—or himself—about the correctness of a point he is trying to make than it is about engaging in a “dialog.”

For a good laugh catch the BBC’s take on the Arizona shooting as a “political act.” Somebody needs to reprogram those leftwing robots for their own good. The BBC is the Fairness Doctrine run amuck.

sans| 1.13.11 @ 1:21PM

You see....every right wing post I've read here is indicative of exactly what you are. It's called projection - a method of denial and resistence to facing the terrible truth that this is who you really are. You know this is true. And I know all about simply by reading the comments you direct outward toward scapegoats.

sans| 1.13.11 @ 1:23PM

Correction: I know all about you simply by reading the comments you direct outward toward scapegoats. And yes, you are all mentally masturbating here because apparently no sane person is paying attention to you or would come near you.

davelnaf| 1.13.11 @ 2:36PM

Dear sans,
Seriously, now, if the comment about liberal bloggers offends you I suggest that you see your analyst as soon as possible.

Kalashnikat| 1.13.11 @ 2:39PM

"no sane person is paying attention to you or would come near you."
Which is clearly why you're here and paying attention, Mr. Laughner/Sans...didn't know they would give a laptop and internet access to a paranoid schizophrenic murderer...so soon after an acute episode... Dream on.

John Navratil| 1.13.11 @ 2:48PM

"You see....every right wing post I've read here is indicative of exactly what you are."
I can't decide whether this is a hed herring (unrelated to your point) or an ad hominem. I lean to the latter as there doesn't seem to be any point here other than an ad hominem attack.

"It's called projection - a method of denial and resistence to facing the terrible truth that this is who you really are."
This statement employs a questionable premise.

"You know this is true."
This is an appeal to ignorance.

"And I know all about simply by reading the comments you direct outward toward scapegoats."
This is a confirmation bias.

What exactly did you have to say?

Liberalism is not going to die until the liberals die through extinction. Few liberals grasps logical reality and shift right to common sense (typically the younger ones who has at least one conservative parent), but the majority of liberals from by experience, cannot make it over the logical hurdles. They haven’t had the “father figure” to conservatively parent them.

Dan Hirsch| 1.13.11 @ 9:24AM

Dear Donna;

The attitude that hides behind the name "Liberalism" is rooted in sophism. Remember the philosophy that each individual sets his own values and rules. The ancient Greeks named the philosophy 2500 years ago - it's still around and it will be around as long as there are humans able to think.

Christians refer to it by a different name, sin. Denying that God sets the rules is truly sinful, and that's what sophists do. They'll never be extinct until sin is. And the lucky of us know when that will be; it won't be a time most people will even recognize. Lucky ones will, it's in the Book.

Lurker| 1.14.11 @ 2:03AM

It's hedonism.

Gregg| 1.13.11 @ 8:18AM

Mr. Tyrrell,

Sorry - while I'd love to believe that Liberlism is dead, I cannot. In addition, I think suggesting so is the first step to their regaining strength. Roughly half the nation still votes as liberals; roughly half thinks Obama is doing a fair or good job.

And don't forget: only 2 years ago Conservatism was proclaimed to be dead.

Big Mistake.

missbosslady| 1.13.11 @ 6:32PM

I agree Gregg.

I would also posit that liberalism is not a mental disorder, but the arresting of development. Inherent in liberals is an idealism that never comes to terms with reality. I do not know if the arresting of their development is caused by fear, fear of responsiblity or the unknown, or fear because they were ill prepared by their parental units for real life.

Nevertheless, there is an acute infantilism that is difficult to contend with and difficult to understand. My fear is that these children of the left will continue to push, as children do, until we reach a tipping point and then, and only then will the realitites of life start to sink in.

Unfortuantely, as it is always does, misery loves company and the left is dragging us all down with them.

idalily| 1.13.11 @ 7:00PM

Cultists are always infantile. Anything outside the repeated mantra is ignored. It must be ignored. If facts don't fit the dogma of the cult, facts must be ignored. Progressivism is a cult. Hence the appeal of the commune and communism.

Ron| 1.13.11 @ 9:50PM

Liberalism continues to grow because our colleges, universities and union public schools follow an agenda that teaches what to think instead of how to think. That is why we need to end tenure and become personally involved in the education of our children. We especially need to make sure they are taught accurate US History and civics. If you think they are being taught correct history, think again! My grandson told me that he learned how the democrats freed the slaves and got black people their civil rights! I immediately got out my old history books and a few I have bought in recent years and taught him the truth. Education reform is needed now!!!!

Martin Owens| 1.13.11 @ 8:30AM

I must concur with Gregg.
This is not a matter of a few election defeats.
Liberals long ago suborned our education and
media establishments, and a good half of our religion. If we're not living under national socialism today, it's surely not for lack of trying...

The United States today resembles one of the those poor wretches one reads about from time to time who are suffering from a tumor damn near as big as they are. Even trying to remove the cause of the disease is so complicated as to be life threatening.

Nancy in NC| 1.13.11 @ 9:25AM

As long as we have left winged nuts in academia, liberalism will never be dead. They fill the youth with this garbage who in their young exuberance suck it up like a sponge.

Liberalism is very much alive in universities all over this land.

Redstateboy| 1.13.11 @ 1:33PM

Nancy in NC.. I was ("was" Praise God! Was) one of those College Kids who became completely indoctrinated in Liber-ul Dogma.. I was a flamming Liber-ul.. Then.... I grew up and became a Man - Not a Male - but a Man. What I've come to accept is: Liber-ulism is a Mental disorder only cured when one is wakened to reality. PeterPan and Never Never Land is only a Childrens Book - yet Liber-uls believe it is real.

Timothy L. Pennell| 1.13.11 @ 8:54AM

The part of all of this that I find most DISGUSTING, is when our Muslim Boy King said, at the Campaign Rally / Memorial, that we had to stop all of the "POLARIZATION" of our Country. Stop the "POLARIZING" rhetoric.
"Polarized Nation"? "Polarized Rhetoric"? Who polarized it?
Rich vs. Poor. Black vs. White. People who want to ENFORCE our Immigration Laws vs. Hispanics. EVIL DOCTORS, cutting out Tonsils and cutting off feet. The Black Panther Case. Evil Insurance Companies. Evil Pharmaceutical Companies. FAT CAT BANKERS. Demonizing the Oil Companies.
These are people and organizations who SAVE OUR LIVES. Who give us JOBS. Who find, and retrieve, the ENERGY that powers our lives. They spend YEARS of man hours, and BILLIONS of Dollars, coming up with the DRUGS that extend our lives, and cure our diseases. (I'm talking to YOU, Mr. HIV / AIDS)
And they have been vilifies since DAY 1, by this man. Because that's who he is. He's an instigator. He's a troublemaker. He's just doing what he's always done. Fomenting CHAOS. Fomenting HATE and MISTRUST. That's what you learn from Saul Alinsky. That's what you learn from Frank Marshall Davis. That's what you become, sitting in the pews of Jeremiah Wright's HATE CHURCH for 20 YEARS.
The idea that this man could heal anything, or that he would even WANT to, is absurd.
Hes a child of the LEFT. And to the LEFT, these situations are a Dream Come True. The LEFT lives for CRISES. And we all know that THIS WHITE HOUSE, never let's a CRISES GO TO WASTE.

missbosslady| 1.13.11 @ 6:48PM

Timothy,

That was a bullseye!

I am in complete agreement with you on these points.

It's time for folks to take the blinders off and face up to the reality that is Barack Obama and the cabal for which he fronts.

I will not be cowed into submission by an army of children who's quivers hold only taunts, and re-tread cliches from the 60's. Please!

It's going to take a lot more than a bunch of weaklings weilding smart phones to knock me off my perch.

I'm here, I'm conservative, get used to it!

Liberalism isn't dead; not even close. It metastasizing

Derek Leaberry| 1.13.11 @ 9:03AM

Liberalism is surely a bore but it is self-delusional to say it is dead. Since the three-cornered presidential election of 1992, liberalism's party has won from 48 to 53 percent of the national vote in presidential elections. Four of the nine Supreme Court justices are liberals of the most extreme variety. Even after the recent landslide election, 53 Senators, all of whom are a liberal of some variety, are Democrats. All the important cultural institutions- the colleges, television, newspapers, motion pictures, the public schools, the arts, publishing, the establisment of public mores- are in the hands of liberals. If you want to know how thoroughly liberals dominate American society, remember how easily the liberals passed the right of open homosexuality in the military only two decades after Ronald Reagan and Cap Weinberger cracked down on homosexuality in the military. It passed with hardly a whimper. Think about the nation being one Supreme Court justice from enacting homosexual "marriage" for the whole nation. No, liberalism may be morally bankrupt and carbuncled with lies but it is winning.

Stormzeye| 1.13.11 @ 9:23AM

Agreed. Further, we Conservatives must learn the virtues of PATIENCE and PERSEVERANCE from the liberal/progressives if we are to succeed in defeating the tyranny of the left.

Michael L. Hauschild| 1.13.11 @ 9:51AM

The only reason anyone on the left wants the right to "cease and desist" is becasue the rhetoric is the truth and it is effective. They do not have the interests of the Nation in mind, the only "healing" they wish to staunce is hemoraging of their bleeding liberal hearts.

GKPAL| 1.13.11 @ 10:14AM

As someone said, liberalism is a mental disorder. And without treatment it gets worse. Just take look at what liberals were able to accomplish in congress in just two years. These buffoons will not die easily. They will go into hibernation, but will come back more determined than ever to destroy this country. That's their ultimate goal and will not stop until the succeed. The question is are we willing to stop them? Only the future will tell.

Byron| 1.13.11 @ 10:39AM

I noticed and others have pointed out that the left has cast Sarah Palin as a witch with supernatural powers that can force a person, with no contact, to do evil deeds. PDS has shown us how witch hunts happened in the distant past. The vicious attacks from the left are a result of her simply pointing out that the government is spending way too much money. Hmm...

Cynicon Implant| 1.13.11 @ 10:45AM

I agree with Nancy in NC. A concerted effort must be made to counteract what is being put into the heads of our sons and daughters at university. I have personally taken it upon myself to debunk the idiocy that comes out of my kids' mouths. They are now seeing the world with more clarity as a result. Each of us must do this as liberalism is not dead, merely festering.

Richard Baker| 1.13.11 @ 10:46AM

How would Krugman prepare crow?

Anthony| 1.13.11 @ 10:50AM

Paul Krugman is a poster-child for disgraced leftism. Almost everything coming out of this man's mouth is pure insanity, including those pronouncements from his chosen, trained profession, economics.
I truly believe Krugman has mental issues. After Bush won in 04, Krugman had to take a sudden leave of absence from the Times and Princeton. The excuse was an economics text book he was working on. I believe it was far more personal than a text book.
I doubt Krugman listened to Gov. Palin's comments on her facebook, after his vile ad hominens about her, they would have rendered this fool speechless, that, or send him further into the leftist land of Palin derangement syndrome.
If liberalsim is dead, unfortunately, the leftist zombies are still walking the earth. I think it was a young Paul Krugman who made his debut in the classic, "Night of the Living Dead". Yes, I'm sure he was the lead zombie.
Imagine spending $60,000 a year to send your kid to Princeton to be taught by zombies.

A. C. Santore| 1.13.11 @ 11:05AM

Derek Leaberry| 1.13.11 @ 1:19PM

Not only a trite, tiresome statement but untrue. Being twenty years of age and advocating the theft of another's wealth to give to the poor shows a lack of heart. As for older liberals having no brains, Harry Reid and Barack Obama just made mince-meat of the Republicans in the lameduck Congress of December. Liberals lack wisdom and morals but many are of the highest intelligence. That's what makes them so dangerous.

Cpm| 1.13.11 @ 4:56PM

Merely pointing out who originally said it and that it wasn't about modern American political philosophy it was about British political parties of the early twentieth century.

missbosslady| 1.13.11 @ 7:01PM

Derek,

I wouldn't confuse intelligence with a willingess to deceive and corrupt. They are not one in the same.

Liberals are only dangersous because conservatives had allowed themselves to be silenced. Beaten back with political correctness we sat on our hands for years whilst they went about making mischief. We find ourselves way behind the eight ball as a result with a lot of ground to make up.

As long as we continue to allow ourselves to be quieted or dismissed through speech control we will find ourselves watching the further degeneration of our society.

We just spent the last several days witnessing the lengths and breadths that the left is willing to go to, to achieve their ends. Some were surprised. I was not. Disgusted, but not surprised.

I would love to believe that we are watching the left punch themselves out, and that may be true of some, but the true believers like Obama have tunnel vision. It really matters not what happens amongst the peasantry (left or right), to the hard core believers, it matters only that they advance.

Wasting time speculating about Obama moving to the middle and other such nonsense drives my crazy. It's not happening, it's not going to happen.

Gen. Pacepa, the Romanian defector stated that the KGB initiated the JFK was "killed by Right Wingers" diversion immediately after the Assassination. The KGB was able to utilize the services of Liberals; "Useful Idiots" to take the ball off of the fact that Oswald was a communist.

This is happening to some extent today with the Tucson event. The Left was whipped last November. So, they need a diversion. So, plant the seeds of Right Wing involvement in this matter. But here's the deal. Liberals have been fighting the types of monitoring that can detect a Loughner before he ever leaves the taxi. Lexigraphic analysis, web data mining, and reporting sites for Homeland Security should have been enough for them to put a target symbol on Loughner's home as a "person of interest".

The leftist troll who used the “metal masterbation” phrase reminded me of a stupid old joke.

The master baiter.

Well, consider all the top “baiters”, led by Obama these evil feeding days, as doing exactly that---feeding their “fish” = closed minded fools, i.e. the voters, all the processed socialistic non-food they can get away with.

They are indeed master baiters!

Their goal is to jail a solid majority in the ignoble triangle of fat TAKERS, fat dispensers of stolen money---the bureaucracy---and run by THEMSELVES.

The bait they are offering ---like Obamacare---is well known on the clear-eyed Right as the all-time switcheroo!

We don’t need no MASTERS!

Throw their BAIT back in their face!

Sarah Palin uses the phrase “blood libel” and all hell breaks loose in the mainstream media, but since day one, the Teflon-coated President Obama has been getting away with referring to his political opposition as “enemies”, using rhetoric like “If they bring a knife to the fight we bring a gun”, and allowing his Attorney-General Eric Holder to say “America is a nation of cowards”, without criticism. Now he says, disingenuously, “Out of this tragedy, we can come together”.
Far from being a unifier, Obama is the most calculatingly divisive President America has ever elected. As they say, a fish rots from the head down.

blackknights1802| 1.13.11 @ 5:05PM

This president is completely off base. All he can do is read a prepared speech from a teleprompter. He even has writers from the TAS patting him on the back for being so presidential. This guy doesn’t have a creative thought in his entire body. When he makes a remark like “Out of this tragedy, we can come together”, tells me that he really doesn’t understand what transpired in Tucson. It tells me that he still has on his left wing, progressive political hat. He is no different then Keith Olbermann or Paul Krugman.

This tragedy had nothing to do with the left and the right being on opposite ends of the political spectrum. It had nothing to do with Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck or any other conservative talk radio person. This was an act by a deranged individual, on innocent people. The shooter even had contact with Giffords as far back as 2007. This was long before Sara Palin came on the national political scene.

If this president really wants to say something constructive he needs to extract his head from his political posterior and think before he reads.

Wayne | 1.13.11 @ 6:04PM

Wayne,

You said a mouthful.

I have a lot less fear of lefties spouting the same old tired drivel, than I have of easily lulled conservatives.

Really folks, Obama did what he does, made the atrocity in Tucson about him and his agenda. It was nothing short of appalling!

Handing out t-shirts and applause at a memorial for the dead? Gross! Worse yet he seemed, as always to revel in the moment. Double gross!

The cadence, the tenor and the pomp that was last night's "memorial" was Obama's M.O. Hard to believe that some on the right have fallen for the same trick AGAIN!

proreason| 1.13.11 @ 6:31PM

I just think they have gone on to phase n of their efforts. Loose efforts to tie their propaganda to reality stopped working in 2010, so now they have cast away from the anchor of facts and are floating free in narrative land.

They won't lose any readers, and this way, like little Paulie did Saturday, they can respond much quicker to events and set the narrative before those pesky net kooks have a chance to examine the evidence.

kwinterkorn| 1.13.11 @ 6:37PM

Sadly, liberalism is constantly regenerated by the resentment of many losers and the irrational guilt of some of the successful for their riches, especially if the riches come to easily (eg. Hollywood stars) or via inheritance (Rockefellers) or from an unexpected massive success of some business out of proportion to efforts (eg. B Gates).

Liberals will always be there and are part of the reason that constant vigilance will ever be part of the cost of freedom.

A few observations:

The photo made me think of Ernst Stavro Blofeld (of whom, I believe, Dr. Evil is a satire).

I am not a psychologist either but Dr. Charles Krauthammer is and he said essentially the same thing in his recent column available on NRO and elsewhere. I recommend it to anyone who is interested. My only criticism concern my doubts about attempting a diagnosis based upon news reports. Maybe it was sufficient for the purposes of his column.

The more I read of Paul Krugman, or about him, the more doubts I have about the Nobel awards. We've long known that the so-called "peace prize" is a joke when they give it to the likes of terrorist Yassar Arafat, huckster Al Gore, and most recently "community organizer" B. Hussein Obama. They certainly have given awards to deserving recipients over the years (Martin Luther King, Jr., F. A. von Hayek, Milton Friedman, and too many scientists to name) but too often these awards go to cranks. Krugman clearly is in this latter category. If he were given a cooking column I would be afraid to try his recipes!

Philip Isett| 1.13.11 @ 9:04PM

Dear Mr Tyrrell,
I, too, am glad to have visited this site, in spite of the presence of so many liberal responses, because you reminded me of why Barack Hussein Obama was so "statesmanly" in his TV speech. Obviously the CBS poll had been run to tell him whether the American voters were still responding correctly to leftist hate speech. When he learned that they weren't, he had his speech rewritten to reflect that good old "bring us all together" theme. Conservative listeners then fell all over themselves in praise for his "finally becoming" what he pretended to be when he was elected. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

Mike | 1.13.11 @ 9:27PM

What is your source for this?

Spook| 1.13.11 @ 9:49PM

The source is called common sense and deduction based on past behavior.

Which is listening to the news and learning 60% of all Americans do not believe the lefts lies about the right. Then looking at the Presidents past behavior when confronted with polling data then going out of established character to match his speech to what the poles indicate is acceptable.

Lurker| 1.14.11 @ 2:11AM

Still there Mike? Are you finding it hard to have a civil conversation with out name calling?
Come on try.

Bruce| 1.13.11 @ 10:23PM

No, liberalism isn't dead. Maybe I'll buy this premise when the Federal Government has 1/3rd the civilian employees. The federal bureaucracy really runs this country. Maybe I'll buy this premise when education is returned to local control, and professors at public universities have to justify what they teach to a board of ordinary taxpayers. Maybe I'll begin to believe it when we actually get to have intense civil discourse while being civilized. When we return to a belief that the opinion of a common and ordinary person has value, even if that value is found just in giving him or her the right to say it. Maybe when we learn to respond to what we see as an unreasoned, vitriolic spew by simply saying, "That's very interesting. Thank you." and moving on, rather than slinging vitriol back. Maybe then whatever that evil is that's called "liberalism" will begin to die. Maybe when that arrogance that says, "I'm right, which makes you wrong, and uneducated, and stupid, and...." only shows up in the ones who are not in power, liberalism will be dying. Maybe.

GavInTucson| 1.14.11 @ 1:52AM

Liberalism never dies. It just keeps shape-shifting into another "term" in an attempt to fool the populace into believing it's the "new" latest and greatest thing since sliced bread (even though it's the same stale, old bread in a different wrapper)

In fact, let's just call modern-day liberals what THEY used to call themselves... Progressives. The name may change, but the ideas don't. They're so much in denial that they can't even proudly keep and maintain what they call themselves. Gee, I wonder why. Because the majority of Americans respond in revulsion???

Liberal = Progressive
Communist = Progressive
Socialist = Progressive
Statist = Progressive
Big Government = Progressive
Government Control = Progressive

In fact, you can basically label any concept that expands government control while simultaneously limiting the freedom of the individual as Progressive/Liberal.

The snake never dies... it just keeps growing a new head.

The first came on November 22, 1963 when Lyndon Johnson became President and, the second came at the moment the organized, "professional," left came to realization it could co-opt all things good and decent like the quest for civil rights and a clean environment for their nefarious purpose of gaining complete political power over the nation.

Look at what's become of civil rights since. Instead of empowering black people to economic and political equality; the left has found a new way to enslave them. You can't come here to Detroit and come to any other conclusion when you see the ruins of our once-great city after 40 years of leftist rule. Elsewhere I read people blaming blacks for the sorry state of our city. This is complete nonsense as blacks are the most visible and sadly, most reliable victims of leftism, trudging back year-after-year to re-elect their leftist oppressors who hold out the bogeyman of "white racism," by which they mean conservatism to hold their minions in thrall.

Consider also the environmental movement. Full disclosure; I sit on the local board of a group whose mission is clean water so, I have some first hand experience with what I prefer to call "conservationism." The left is singularly unrepresented in our group because we are all scientists and professionals who know and understand science, particularly biology and chemistry and engineering. They don't bother with us because we can't be swayed by the faux "science" they foist on the uneducated. While we may argue among us about the reality of concepts like climate change; we approach from a logical, informed basis and therefore, there is no leftist representation. We can’t be had.

Consider also the left's involvement in the "peace" movement. The anti-war left is and always has been less interested in "peace" than they are in America's diminution. How else can you explain their silence about their culpability for the Killing Fields of Kampuchea or the plight of the Vietnamese boat people in the past and their singular unwillingness to acknowledge the new future that awaits in Iraq, thanks to the American effort there? No. They will log on here and elsewhere and decry it at "blood for oil" or some other leftist pap when, indeed the United States received not one single Iraqi oil contract. Those resources are being developed instead by the Chinese.

Or, consider the issue of women’s rights. The left has allied itself with misogynistic Islamists but, they care about “women’s’ rights?” How absurd to believe such a thing when they associate, support and defend those whose mission it is to enslave women as chattel (Yeah. I know. Some Islamist apologist will come here and tell me how much more women are respected under Islam. Nobody buys this propaganda).

Leftist programs do not work (Like I say, come to Detroit and, I'll show you around) but, they persist in them regardless of miserable results as it is the means to the end for them - power, power! at any cost.

Once, years ago; a university department head recommended me for graduate school citing my "liberal mind" by which he meant my open-mindedness and willingness to learn. However, I've watched for decades now how the left has infiltrated and perverted noble movements for ignoble reasons. I would cringe if I was called “liberal” today because the term no longer has such a flattering definition. The proof of this is; now they want to be called “progressives” because they know the negative connotations of being “liberal” today.

Liberalism IS dead but, it wasn't killed by conservatives. It was killed by the organized, professional, morally bereft left.

the things you point out, those types of arguments, anyone could make about the other side. what I'd like to know is what are the answers to some of the problems that plague us? And those left of center or centrists are not morally bereft, read the Bible, you'll find a lot of support for things the "morally bereft" Left supports. I'd like to see some people spend less time on putting others down and more time coming up with ideas as to how to deal with problems. Just my opinion.

If you weed out the statements that are bull, like "Doubtless, today there are fervent Liberals living in haunts in Massachusetts and..." then you are left with the argument that "see liberals do it, too." Yes, it's true. But that overlooks the obvious unbiased fact that there is so much more vitriol on the right side of the the political spectrum. Only a biased person or someone not paying much attention would be able to ignore that. the guy who threatened Patty Murray, a Beck fan, the guy the CA state police pulled over was on his way to off people at the Tides Foundation- another Beck fan. A few years ago, the guy who burst in on a Unitarian church shooting a bunch of people- owned books by several Right Wing pundits and confessed about needing to save the country from the Liberals, but not being able to get to them, just wanted to take a few of those people out that put them in power. Look there is hardly anything to compare with these things coming from the left. The constant comparisons of Obama to Hitler and the character assassinations are over the top. Why can't the Right just win arguments on the merits without demonizing centrists like Obama and making them out to be nefarious extremists? This guy may not have been a Beck fan, but maybe the atmosphere created by certain pundits does have a little to do with it. There's discourse, then there is bull****. Let's have more discourse, please.
