Quite the Opposite
Sheriff Dupnik, meet Armand Hammer.
Be patient, I’ll get to Sheriff Dupnik and Rush Limbaugh and all that in due time, but first I want to testify to a miracle I experienced in my personal life. This was back in 1990. I was a lecturer in Jewish Studies at a university in Jerusalem, and one of my classes was entitled Contemporary Relevance of Talmud. My students were young American products of public education who naturally assumed the Talmud was a relic. But the age difference between us was not pronounced — I was 32 and they were juniors, 20 or 21 — so they were very open to what I had to say, and the give-and-take usually sparkled.
On this particular day I was arguing that even when the Talmud discussed a subject no longer relevant, its moral insights and legal analysis are still useful today. As an example, I cited the story (Kiddushin 70a) of the fellow who insulted Rabbi Judah, calling him a “slave.” The rabbi responded: “He who disqualifies others generally accuses them of his own flaw.” “I’m no slave,” scoffed the man. “I am a descendant of the Maccabees, the Hasmonean royal line from the Second Temple period!”
“It is just as I said!” exclaimed Rabbi Judah. This man had not known the history of Herod’s slave rebellion against the Hasmoneans. Herod killed every member of the family except for one beautiful daughter he wanted to marry. She went up to the roof and cried: “Whoever claims to be a Hasmonean is really a slave!” Then she jumped to her death. So there are no descendants of the Maccabees, only descendants of murderous slaves pretending to be the family they massacred. The man who had slandered Rabbi Judah with the epithet of “slave” turned out to be one himself.
You see, I told the class, the part about the Maccabees may no longer be relevant. Who is going to show up fifteen hundred years later claiming to be a Maccabee? But the moral message remains very powerful: people who hurl insults are generally guilty of those very accusations.
Suddenly a kid jumps up out of his seat and shouts: “You’re saying the Maccabees were wiped out?”
“Yes.”
“I’m in the middle of reading Armand Hammer’s biography. He says his family has a tradition that they are descended from Judah the Maccabee, which is why their name is Hammer, since Maccab is Hebrew for hammer.” I excused him to go to his dorm room and bring back the book. Sure enough, it was just as he described. Armand Hammer, the famous head of Occidental Petroleum (and Russian spy), had unwittingly revealed he was heir to a murderous legacy.
At that moment I made a personal resolution never to make statements impugning the relevance of the Talmud on any level. A hand had reached down from Heaven to give me a loving spank.
TO CURRENT EVENTS, THEN, applying the timeless wisdom above. Everyone has been following the remarks of Sheriff Dupnik blaming the “hard right rhetoric” for the nutcase who shot a Jewish Congresswoman in Arizona. This despite his referencing The Communist Manifesto in his rants and despite evidence he has been stalking his target since 2007, long before the Obama Era. When Limbaugh slammed Dupnik for unseemly speculation, Dupnik shot back that Limbaugh was generally irresponsible in inflaming the public with half-truths and that we were seeing the consequences.
All this is well known and being kicked back and forth between liberal and conservative commentators. Michelle Malkin on her blog has compiled a stunning array of left-wing hate speech and imagery against George W. Bush, Sarah Palin and the Tea Party. It becomes clear to anyone willing to look at this closely that on balance the left is more guilty in this area. If Price-Waterhouse was brought in to do an impartial third-party audit, the numbers would come down heavily against the left. This in turn discredits all these liberal hacks in their blamefest.
But the point I want to make is more powerful. It is not merely that Limbaugh beats Dupnik on points, so Dupnik should have the sense to shut his mouth. It is much more than that. We are witnessing the Talmudic dictum come to life before our eyes in a manner reminiscent of the student who brought me Armand Hammer’s book.
Because in point of actual fact the truth is the OPPOSITE of what Dupnik asserts, and startlingly so. Think about it. Limbaugh has been on the air for twenty-two years. He has been espousing a point of view with passion and emphasis to millions of people five days a week. He has been frank in exposing the shortcomings of the opposing view. Yet not one single act of violence during that time has ever been attributed to a person identified as one of his regular listeners. NOT ONE SINGLE ACT!
This was a period that included the Oklahoma City bombings, the Olympic bombings, Columbine (Colorado), the Unabomber, the anthrax mailings, the Virginia Tech shootings, the Capitol Police attack, the Arizona train derailment, Paducah (Kentucky), the Amish killing rampage, Pearl (Mississippi), Fort Hood, the Arkansas military recruiter, Springfield (Oregon), the abortionist killed in Wichita, the abortionist killed in Buffalo, the Haley-Bopp Comet cult, the fire at Freddie’s, the Crown Heights riots, the D.C. sniper, the IRS kamikaze plane, etc. The list goes on and on.
Many of these murderers were discovered to have materials from Karl Marx. Al Gore, Al Sharpton and a whole array of fringe characters. Yet never once has one of these explosive acts of violence been traced to a Rush Limbaugh listener. That is a stunning fact in its own right, almost miraculous really. One could hardly fault him if here or there a fevered acolyte pursued his impetus beyond equipoise. But no… never even one single solitary time in twenty-two years!
The pro-Constitution, pro-liberty voices on the air do not promote upheaval. They promote a vision of liberty to pursue dreams. Healthy dreams, my friends, not twisted fantasies; ballots, not bullets.

I must admit, I am greatly pleased to see that the recent events in Arizona are having their desired results. Of course you were unaware of my machinations on your behalf, but that must often be the case. Consider it "plausible deniability", a term with which I believe you are well familiar. After all, whenever innocent blood is shed, you can trust that someone from my firm has been at work. And please, whatever face you wish to put on for your adoring public, do not play coy with me. We have known each other far too well for far too long.
So, now that I have delivered your crisis, what are you going to do with it? I see my trusty servant Sheriff Dupnik is as reliable as ever. Observe him and learn. See how he attacks his enemies without hesitation? Does he allow his ridiculous "oath of office" to deter him? Does he adhere to some pathetic notion of "honor" or "ethics" that constrains his speech? Does he concern himself with his "responsibilities" as an "office of the law" in a time such as this? No, of course not! He is a true man, exercising his will to power without concern for the weak and stupid whom he bends to his will. If you are to be a true Great Leader then you must become like him!
Now is the time to attack. Do not wait, do not hesitate. The reigns of power are in your hands. When my Austrian henchman saw the Reichstag burning, do you think he hesitated? Of course not; his enemies were being executed in the streets and in their beds within days. Why then do you wait? Do you not know that he who hesitates is lost? Quit taking so much time to think, and simply act! I will do the thinking for you, you must do the acting for me. Those are the terms of our agreement, and the rules which bind both of us.
I assure you, I can deliver opportunities of this nature to you only so often, and at great cost and effort to my firm. If you squander them, we will take our services elsewhere. I do not say this to threaten you (although you well know what my superiors lower down in this firm are capable of) but to remind you of your obligations to us and to yourself. Do you want to be the One True Messiah that your faithful followers long for? Do you want to be a God on earth, as even your journalists have proclaimed you to be? Then you must act the part. I have given you the excuse, now you must take the action.
Let me add further, that if you will act on this opportunity, then it affords me the power that I need to create more opportunities for you. Do not be afraid, I will never betray you or let you down! Every time you seize one of the opportunities I give you, I am made stronger, and can provide more of the same bloodshed necessary for your advancement. Remember, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.
So the choice is yours, my friend. Muzzle the press. Repeal the "freedoms" your bitter countrymen so foolishly hold dear and cling to. Once you have taken their freedom, then you can usher in the New Age and your Great Plan. Once you give your full obeisance to me, I can fully empower you to be the God of your world. But you must strip your countrymen of their freedom, and more especially of their love for their freedom. Only when you do this can our common goals be fully realized. So strike now to silence those who oppose you, and show yourself to be worthy of my devotion.

The Talmudic example you so marvelously cite runs deeper than you say on this subject. Over the last few decades, it is the left which has publicly fantasized about actually murdering political opponents. They usually dismiss it as a 'joke' or 'art.' Remember Alec Baldwin's rant hoping people would storm Henry Hyde and murder him and his family during the impeachment hearings? When Craig Kilborn flashed a sign saying, "Snipers Wanted" over a phtoto of George W. Bush on CBS? When John Kerry joked with Bill Maher about going to the White House and murdering Pres. Bush for his (Kerry's) wife's birthday in 2006? The multiple Bush assassination novels and movies? The hanging effigy of Sarah Palin that was all the rage in Hollywood during the 2008 election? I could go on, but what's the point?
Here's a point, on the rare occasions the left is actually called on it by someone, they always chuckle and say something like, "take a joke." The rest of the lefties gather round and either defend the offender or remain silent. When does a leftie publicly rebuke another for such murderous fantasies? The only thing I can think of that is even close is when Mayor Daley rebuked Sen. Dick Durbin for calling our troops Nazis and war criminals.
For the left, actually calling for the murder of a conservative opponent is not hate speech; but to oppose Obamacare, huge taxes and spending, bailouts, govt. takeovers of the internet, car companies, banks, etc. is hate speech that must be stopped. The left is engaging in a vast projection of their own sick pathology onto us.
But despite all the sound and fury, I fear we are quietly approaching a terrible Rubicon. In earlier episodes of leftists exploiting a tragedy to smear us, we have reacted defensively -we were in shock anyone could think that way and reacted without understanding they were just calling us names.
Now they do it for the umpteenth time and we push back. We think they are up to their usual name-calling. I think it is a dress rehearsal for something far worse. The left has lost the public debate. It is losing target groups among its base. It is losing ground on every front. So it seeks to govern by executive fiat, by calls to further proscribe political speech, to control talk radio, to take control of the internet, to charge global-warming 'deniers' with treason while treating actual treason as the 'highest form of patriotism.' Look carefully at the pathologies the left's public statements and public fantasies and actions have revealed over the last two decades. They're not just calling us names this time: they are ginning up the nerve to use the levers of gov't for actual oppression and command; to outlaw Christianity and general conservative thought as 'hate speech.' We are in for a very rough ride the next two years. I don't have much confidence our GOP Congress will even understand the stakes as they 'compromise' with people who are determined to enslave America.
They are not just calling us names this time. They are building the nerve to start coming for us and for our freedom. They are preparing to make their fantasies our reality.

Jeremiah: There is a rule is social discourse that I believe goes back as far as the ancient Greeks. It is called consent through silence. To dismiss their own comments, or to remain silent about them is a consent through their silence to their own rants.
I can not consent to violence. Through violence we are far more likely to end this country with a Robespierre than a Ragan. I can not agree with you more, the hate speach from the left is driving this country to violence far more than Beck or Limbaugh ever have, or ever will. And that truly scares me. It frightens me to believe that violence is actually the lefts intent.

Jeremiah, You are right. America is indeed at a loggerhead. We have two diametrically opposed theories of government that are competing for the future of America.
The left is brazen enough now to actually call it by its actual name, socialism and redistributive social justice, and they are on the move, as you've pointed out.
We call it a Constitutional representative government, which the left deems to be archatic, a thing of the past, from a document that's over 200 years old, that nobody can understand.
As I've said before, there is no compromise here, no "move to the middle".
Our leaders, such as they are, are a sorry sort, save for a few, they are completely unable to lead America from the brink, because almost every D in Washington is a hard core socialist.
Many Rs are equally clueless and have no vision other than how to get re-elected , as demonstrated by the lunacy of legislation coming from the likes of Messrs. King and Burton. This is what passes for leadership in America today. We Americans are responsible for electing these professional political losers. We will pay a horrible price for our neglect.
So, which side will give? That is the question. And if indeed there is no "give", which appears to be the case, what is outcome?
I'm afraid the band has been streached to its limit. Soon something will have to give and that process will be ugly.

I agree with all of you, we are fast coming to a crossroads, and it's not going to be pretty. I will also add to the mix that I think our economy is headed for a second dip (think Great Depression), though I may be a bit cynical on that matter. Regardless, a worsening or stagnant economic climate compounded by worsening political climate and more strident calls from the extremes of both sides will only make matters worse (and BTW, I don't consider Rush, Beck, Hannity, et al, to be extreme by any stretch of the imagination; however, there ARE people on the right calling for armed insurrection, one can find them on the internet).
I agree with Hunter that there are those on the Left that really do want this, because it will serve their purpose of ever-increasing governmental control--sending in the military to control a potential insurrection, for example. Or possibly more laws to control those of us who speak out against their taking of more and more liberties ("hate speech" comes to mind--whatever happened to "sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me"?) Continually expanding governmental control over communications, etc., trying to control every aspect of our lives, and all the while acting superior to the rest of us as if we are nothing but peasants (the Ruling Class mentality).
Anyway, I say we need to pray for the best and prepare for the worst--and VOTE. Every election, every time we get a chance. This is our best bet to recover our Republic.

I think Dupenik (error intentional) is attempting the divert the question: how did this nutcase buy a gun? In NC the sherriff issues gun permits after a thorough background check.
His diversion keeps anyone from looking too closely as to why this guy had no record even though he had several run ins with the law. Dupenik knows he dropped the ball.

Dear Clint/Tim*: a lot of the time, the local gendarmes won't even bother filing charges against anyone with a psychiatric record, which diminishes the ability of psychiatrists to a) commit that person or b) arrange for a forensic psychiatry hospitalization.

Dupnick is the Mike Nifong of Arizona. He appears to be a Democrat hack with a penchant for this sort of rhetotic.
Since Dupnick knew of this kid since 2007, long before Sarah Palin and the Tea Party, and apparently never connected the dots, Dupnick knew that eventually real journalists would be checking out his record.
So like all good D hacks, Dupnick came out swinging at Rs and conservatives, hence providing himself cover with the "corrupt bastards" in the MSM, who of course, have obliged thus far.
No questions from Katie or Tom on why Dupnick didn't take action sooner. MSLSD, led by Matthews and Olberman, will continue to foam at the mouth over Palin and Limbaugh.
However, Dupnick's record will soon come out on this kid, and all of lefty media types won't be able to put Humpty Dupnick back together again.
I'd try to take over the gig at the Ed Show on MSLSD if I were you Dupnick. The pay's good and the audience size about that of your county.

I've lived in Tucson (Pima Co.) for 30 years and have come to understand that we are the liberal bastion in a predominately Republican conservative state. It is well known here that if you run for election in Tucson and have a "D" after your name, you are going to win, no matter how brilliant the "R" opponent may be. Our city elections are so rigged that the individual ward representations are voted by the entire city and not the specific ward. I live in a predominately republican ward and I am represented by a Democrat councilman. Dupnik ran against a real qualified republican candidate last election cycle but as always the Ds vote like lemmings and once again we get good ol Clarence and the likes of Raul Grijalva. No one will ask for his resignation or mount a recall because he is part of the liberal club here in Tucson. And you thought all Arizonans were republican conservatives.

I was a Democrat for many years, and my husband still is one. I became a Republican about 20 years ago, when the Democrat party started moving so far left. My husband votes Democrat in the primary, but Republican in the general election. People who continue to vote for these liberal lefties deserve what they get in the area of tax and spend, with cities and states going broke because of the Socialistic programs.
Liberals are entitled to their beliefs, but don't try to shove them down my throat.
