For a conservative columnist responding to the obscene, leftist
circus surrounding the soul-wounding shooting in Tucson, the devil
on one shoulder so easily gets the upper hand over the angel on the
other. The grief and empathy barely had time to inspire cogent
response before being replaced by rage against the paranoid leftist
attacks on Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and, by extension, all
conservatives. Normal human feelings, the sorts of admirable
feelings that drew Americans together after 9/11 and that drew
volunteers from around the country to help the victims of Hurricane
Katrina, were defecated upon by the sowers of discord who would
portray political opponents as accessories to mass murder. The
desperate urge is to strike back at these calumnious and viciously
mendacious attacks, to escalate the conflict in a way that will
make the leftist thugs crawl under the nastiest, most
vermin-infested rock imaginable. But rather than escalate the
language, the imperative is to elevate it. Can we give any voice to
the angel who sits on the shoulder that is, quite naturally, on the
right?
The temptation is to burn
Paul Krugman in effigy, which would be no more than a taste of
his own medicine. The temptation would be to wish that
Chris Matthews would swallow a CO2 pellet and explode like a
giant blimp. The almost irresistible dream would be to yell from
the rooftops the obvious truth about what a cretinous scumball
Keith Olbermann is, and watch so many people raise their voices in
agreement that the Olberweasel cries in shame.
But the angel on the right won’t allow this column to
degenerate to that level. Really. The angel won’t let us put an
electoral target over the sheriff’s office in Pima County, even
though its current occupant deserves to be defeated in the biggest
landslide since Bill Buckley threatened to demand a recount. The
angel won’t let us put the sheriff’s words in our cross-hairs. The
little demon on the left does, however, beckon mighty
enticingly.
The angel’s wisdom is unyielding, though. It is much
quieter, but it is admirably insistent. It is the wisdom of the
George Washington who held his tongue throughout the entire
Constitutional Convention. It is the forbearance of the Jackie
Robinson who transcended the vicious treatment of bigots by letting
his own excellence, character, and work ethic speak for itself. It
is the unmatched decency of the Jack Kemp who always tried to find
something good or admirable in his erstwhile opponents. It is the
innate goodness of the hundreds of millions of Americans who
respond to almost any tragedy around the world with unmatched
generosity, who rally against tyranny in foreign hellholes, who
spend more time volunteering than almost any other people, and who
are the most personally industrial populace in the developed
world.
The real story in Tucson is of heroism and kindness. It is
of the neighbor who kindly offered to take a nine-year-old to see
her congresswoman. It is of the husband who gave his life shielding
his wife. It is of the two men — one of them with a head bleeding
from a bullet grazing — who tackled the shooter, and of the woman
who grabbed his backup weapons clip and kneeled on his leg, and of
the young man who took her place holding his legs while she sought
to provide first aid to others.
The real story is of the now-famous intern who cradled the
congresswoman and kept her alive, and of the medics and doctors who
did their jobs so well, and of the victims’ families who comforted
each other. Not the least, of course, it is the story of a
remarkably plucky Gabrielle Giffords, holding on for life, and her
astronaut husband rushing to be by her side.
Also, if you could do a massive screen-save of
conservative blogs in the hours immediately after the shooting, you
would see nothing but empathy, prayers, kind words for Rep.
Giffords, and expressions of horror at the violence and
senselessness of it all. As, of course, should have been expected,
because conservatives are Americans too, and because we are human.
We are not, and never have been, haters. We are not bigots, or
prone to violence, or even prone to unusually pugilistic rhetoric.
We just aren’t.
(“But those blasted leftists are those things!” yells the
demon. “Didn’t you see those Journo-Listers who laughed at the idea
of watching Rush Limbaugh get ‘bug-eyed’ while dying?!”)
Patience, lad, patience. This isn’t about right and
left.
There’s nothing wrong with calling for civility, and with
providing for it. There’s everything good about emulating the
gentlemanly qualities of, say, Joe Lieberman, or the unfailing
graciousness of former Congresswoman and Ambassador to the Vatican
Lindy Boggs. There is nobility in the genuine friendship enjoyed by
Barry Goldwater and John F. Kennedy, who had planned with each
other to campaign in side-by-side forums if they faced each other
in the 1964 general election. It would have mirrored the good will
produced in the famous Virginia campaign for the very first U.S.
Congress under the new Constitution, when James Madison and James
Monroe traveled together as friends, throughout their district,
while campaigning against each other.
This shooting, like the 9/11 atrocity and the attack on
Pearl Harbor, could have and should have engendered a rallying
together of conservatives and liberals in shared affirmation of
this nation’s bedrock strength of character and of the abidingness
of our institutions. It could have and should have focused us all,
again, on the human tragedy of serious mental illness, and on
finding humane ways to better deal with it.
We are Americans, fergoshsakes. We are better than this.
We are exceptional. And we all are endowed by God not just with a
potential for sin but also with the better angels of human nature,
so that we can and should strive to respond to tragedy with
kindness, intelligence, and courage. We may not have the power to
start the world over again, but we certainly can re-boot our
reaction to the horror we saw last Saturday. C’mon, Mr. Krugman,
request a Mulligan. Go ahead, Sheriff Dupnik, re-holster your word
gun. And yes, conservatives, if they will retract their calumnies,
we should not belabor the point, but move on. Gabby Giffords’
brother-in-law Scott Kelly can see the whole entire world from his
space station. Let’s make him like what he sees emanating from the
North American continent. Just one more small step for this
particular branch of mankind, a step in the right
direction.

Thanks Quin.
I am going to be honest about my first thoughts after seeing the first headline on Drudge Saturday morning (it read "Congresswomen Shot") was who, where and why.
Then as reports came in and read Gifford was a Dem I thought "Oh, no, the left is going to blame this on the right."
Then another report came in which read Gifford was killed. More shock to my system.
Then all I could do was pray for all of those shot and killed. Then more news came in that Gifford were still alive and prayed she would make it. Thank God she is still with us.
Late Saturday night when I came home about 10 p.m. I saw a story about the little girl who was killed. That's when I really lost it.
How can people do this sort of thing? I can't get in their mindsets.
And then I read some of the vile put out by Krugman and others. I was as shocked at that as much the shooting. Well, not really, but the quickness of it.
God bless those victims and their families. I pray that Gifford makes it back to work in the House. She was well liked by people of all persuasions in Tucson I hear.
Sorry for the babbling. Just a place to get out my thoughts.
Thanks.

All the great despotisms of the past - I'm not arguing for despotism as a principle, but they sure knew how to deal with potential trouble - recognized that the families of objectionable citizens were a continuing threat. In Stalin's penal code it was a crime to be the wife or child of an 'enemy of the people.' The Nazis used the same principle, which they called Sippenhaft, 'clan liability.' In Imperial China, enemies of the state were punished 'to the ninth degree': that is, everyone in the offender's own generation would be killed and everyone related via four generations up, to the great-great-grandparents, and four generations down, to the great-great-grandchildren, would also be killed."

Let'sTellLies & Droolong are good a cherry picking out of context quotes from media matters. Before I get into some of the "tolerant" things that libs have said, let's examine some of the wonderful acts of leftists recently:
A Kent State professor openly calling for the killing of Jews because he thinks its OK to kill "occupiers."
Let's talk about the SEIU thugs who beat up a wheelchair bound black man at a healthcare townhall because he was handing out conservative literature & "Don't Tread on Me" flags. And let's take a look at the NAACP's statement after it happened.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTXBOgPCh9w
http://www.fireandreamitchell......k-enough/#
Let's talk about the elderly man who had his finger bitten off by a healthcare supporter in LA.
Oh, & what about that Tea Partier who Bloomber was CERTAIN tried to blow up Times Square? OOOPS!
DRed| 1.12.11 @ 12:55PM
um, watch that video. He's not wheelchair bound at all. He showed up after the incident in a wheelchair to highlight how 'injured' he was.
Nick| 1.12.11 @ 1:05PM
Good come back, DRed!
It's okay for union thugs to beat a black man, because he later faked being injured, by sitting in a wheelchair, according to you.
You totally destroyed NavyBrat's point....NOT!
DRed| 1.12.11 @ 1:33PM
Come on, Nick. Navy Brat was being hysterical. You can't admit that it's over the top to call that a beating of a wheelchair bound man? Watch that scuffle and imagine it's between tea party members and a guy selling aclu buttons. How would you describe it?
Nick| 1.12.11 @ 1:47PM
DRed,
You are just trying to deflect from the disgusting behavior of lefties.
No, the black man, Ken Gladney, who was beaten up by union thugs (an oxymoron, I know) was not wheelchair bound when he was punched and kicked.
I'm sure that was just a mistake by NavyBrat, not "hysterical." NavyBrat can speak for himself, though.
But, you have no right to imply that Mr. Gladney was faking when he showed up in a wheelchair. That is libelous.
Try addressing NavyBrat's point, DRed. If you can.
Nick| 1.12.11 @ 1:49PM

Nick| 1.12.11 @ 6:07PM
Care to be more specific, troll?
DRed| 1.12.11 @ 2:10PM
Navybrat's point (I think) is that the leftists are the really violent ones. Mischaracterizing a scuffle between fully mobile adults as the beating of a wheelchair bound man is typical of the overinflamatory rhetoric (from all sides of the political spectrum) that I find particularly frustrating.
As an aside, what does it matter that he's black? Would it be better if he was Asian? White? Or is that worse?
Nick| 1.12.11 @ 2:20PM
Just playing the bleeding heart liberal, Alinskyite game, DRed.
What's a liberal to do?
We have union thugs on one hand, and a black man on the other. Ahhhh! But, the black man is a conservative, so it is okay to side with the union thugs on this one, according to the liberal playbook. Even if the union thugs broke the law.
The ends justify the means, right DRed?
Nick| 1.12.11 @ 2:29PM
DRed,
If you think it is ridiculous to blame the right for this atrocity, why aren't you over at koskids and huffpo explaining how ridiculous they're being?
Why are you bothering us?
DRed| 1.12.11 @ 2:37PM
I have only the vaguest idea who Alinsky is, so perhaps? I wouldn't know. But from what I gather, it would be Alinskyite of me to deny knowing much about Alinksy, so take that into account.
No, they don't.
Negro X| 1.12.11 @ 5:27PM
"I have only the vaguest idea who Alinsky is", spoken like a true useful idiot, just doing what your controllers tell you to. Obama loves you.
Nick| 1.12.11 @ 5:46PM
DRed,
I'm sure you are quite ignorant on many subjects, based on your posts.
Just keep reading the articles here at AmSpec, you will learn, eventually.
NavyBrat | 1.12.11 @ 1:53PM
Typical response from a violence apologist. Yeah, just keep moving on. Nothing to see here. Never mind the fact that this guy got his arse kicked for being contrary to the SEIU shitbirds who didn't like his message. Yep. Nothing to see here.
But a white kid who's read Mein Kampf & the Communist Manifesto, & who's friends have described as everything from a-political to left wing, shoots a Dem member of Congress & is automatically connected to the right.
So lemme see if I have this straight. SEIU asshats beating up black conservatives (you're right, I yield on the wheelchair point, he needed it b/c his leg got busted) is ok. All mention of the event is described as "hysterical" & no condemnation is ever made of the event. And the local NAACP doubles down on it by saying that Gladney basically had it coming b/c he's an "Uncle Tom" (more liberal "tolerance?").
But THIS incident? Well, blame the right, Fox, Palin, Rush, Beck, Levin, Edmund Burke, Cicero, the Founders, & the aliens at Roswell! These people should be SILENCED! We can't have this type of "vitriol" anymore.
You people are hypocrites of the first order. And well more than half the country sees through the bullshat narrative of this situation that you insipid fools have tried to spin.
But this white kid shooting a
DRed| 1.12.11 @ 2:17PM
Navybrat, I think it's ridiculous to blame 'the right' for this shooting. Or to blame the left. This kid seems to have been pretty mentally disturbed.
As for Gladney, all I know is what I see in the video you posted (the one without the wheelchair, that you obviously never bothered to watch). There's no beating in that video.
NavyBrat | 1.12.11 @ 2:37PM
Fair enough, DRed. I'll agree with you that this kid was a just plain ole whackjob.
And I admitted & yielded the point on the wheelchair, dude. You didn't see that fight at the beginning of the clip?
Occam's Tool| 1.12.11 @ 9:57PM

Depend Diapers (for adults)| 1.12.11 @ 12:35PM
Eric, dear,
Before you meet your client for your Mediterranean lunch, I suggest your change your diaper.
And by the way, WalMart has a sale on Depend diapers. Time for you to stock up.
And after you've changed your diaper, cut those unsightly hairs that are growing out of your nose. Women, with their delicate sensibilities, can't stomach hair growing out of nose.
Nick| 1.12.11 @ 12:59PM
Walmart also has a sale on ammunition.
Eric Cartman| 1.12.11 @ 3:00PM
Diapers? Really? I expected much more from you. You give us a cool name like Hell's Warthogs and then have a pathetic come back like diapers? Very disappointing.
Now, nose hair? That's a whole different thing. I'm a firm believer in nose hair grooming. I have a Beehive doo up there now. So there is that.
The real trouble is ear hair. I first tried a comb-over for my bald spot, but at some point, it was just too embarrassing. I had eight . . . ten inches of hair from both ears combed up and permed for a "care-free, bon vivant" look (http://www.windbiscuits.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/ear-hair.jpg). But it was just too much work. So I switched to the braided, "Sixties Hippie" look. But that's wearing thin. So I am trying the GI look and cutting it back.
But now that I know Walmart also has an ammo sale, I think I'll kill two liberals with one stone and do the hair and ammo think there. Thanks, Nick :-)

Look at the cartoons from that era and the pictures of hanging etc. What's more they actually did do violence to those loyal to the king!

Yes, keeping a civil tongue in our heads is an admirable aspiration. It is what got us defeated in 2008 and led to the current situation in Washington. But it is still the right thing to do if possible, until it is not possible any more, and then it is time to rise up together and crush the opposition.
Then we return to civility.

W., for all his faults, was one of the most civil Presidents this country has had recently. Turning the other cheek was his natural response when attacked by the libs and the media. Admirable in some ways, but it allowed filthy lies to become the truth, leading to the mess we're in now.

Mr. Hillyer, yours is one of the more reasoned responses to the Tuscon murders and their aftermath. I believe most people are already where that angle on the right shoulder has nudged them; it is only the vilest leftists who have allowed the other shoulder to dominate. And, accordingly, we have the truth of politics today which BHO above has highlighted. The murders were not about politics, but much of the reaction has been. Comity is an admirable goal, but surrender is not, so we have to be realistic in dealing with such people and opposing them at every turn.
Redstateboy| 1.12.11 @ 8:27AM
I've come to the conclusion that the very life of the Republic is at stake. I also believe the Lefts horrible reaction to this tragedy indicates they know there time is running out to turn this country into something none of our Founders would recognize. (Gulp) .... People die in Wars, Civil and otherwise.. Yes, we must rise above the Liber-uls - thereby demonstrating just what they are... but we need to wake up and realize... we Are in a {soft} Civil War at this moment.

in my view there are two overlapping issues: Issue one is sending hopes and prayers for the families and victims of this terrible incident while at the same time looking very carefully athe facts of thcase itself. About the shooter and the law encorcement and other institutions handling of this guy prior to the incident. A total psycosocial autopsy needs to be done no holds barred. The second issue sandly isa political one The political one is this; TheDemocrat Party thru various surrogates is attempting to shut people up and use this incident for political gain. In this respect I have problems with the approach. In the ideal world which I believe never was--it would be a wonderful thing. But in the world we live in I disagree sorry. However what I do believe should be done is to use the democrat Party's efforts to smear Conservatives smartly. That is to sayin advertising and in every other way to show side by side that Conservatives are looking at the victims and looking after them. The Democrat side is railing against us. Who would you rather have govern you ?

If only we would listen to the proper angel a little more often, we could be more civil in our dealings with our fellow man. Which angel inspires us when someone cuts us off on the road? Which angel do we listen to when someone grabs the parking spot we wanted? We need to remember that the angel on the left shoulder is one of those that was cast out of Heaven and serves the master cast out with him.
Mark Jeffery Koch| 1.12.11 @ 9:15AM
Instead of going on dozens of talk shows and blaming Rush Limbaugh for the awful events in Tucson the Sheriff should have been called on the carpet for his incompetent behaviour that included arresting Jared Loughner five times, yet although having a law in Arizona that could have remanded him for 72 hours for psychiatric exams his deputees decided simply to release him each time . If they had forced him to have psychiatric evaluations he would have been sent to a place for therapy but instead the nation is grieving at the loss of six innocent lives, lives that should have been long and filled with happiness and good health. This did not have to be and if the sheriff had done the right thing we would not be mourning the loss of these innocent people. The sheriff needs to look in the mirror for the reason why this deranged loser was let back on the streets to commit murder.
In addition, the Arizona laws regarding gun permits must be changed. Under the present law unless you are declared mentally ill by a court of law you are allowed to purchase a weapon. That means that a man could be arrested five times for beating his wife and still be allowed to purchase a deadly weapon. We need to have a Federal law that ANY arrest for violent behaviour means you can never buy a gun.
Sam Levi| 1.12.11 @ 10:50AM
Mr. Koch,
I fairly well agreed with you up until your last paragraph. Please, in the future, before giving the left more ammunition to try and strip all guns from us, by force as they did in Australia, do some research.
The Arizona gun laws are fine the way they are; and we certainly do not need more federal laws. The issue was not with the law, it was with enforcement of existing laws. Here are a few things I think you may find of interest:
"18 U.S.C. 922(g) is the federal law that prohibits anyone ever convicted of any felony from ever possessing any firearm either inside or outside of his home."
"18 U.S.C. § 922(d)(4) , prohibits transferring firearms to “mental defectives” which vague language in the Code of Federal Regulations under 27 C.F.R. § 478.11 defines as:
“Adjudicated as a mental defective. (a) A determination by a court, board, commission, or other lawful authority that a person, as a result of marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease:
(1) Is a danger to himself or to others; or
(2) Lacks the mental capacity to contract or manage his own affairs.”
“Adjudication” doesn’t refer only to court rulings, but instead by a “DETERMINATION by a board, court or commission…” which could include, among other things, a board of psychologists at a mental hospital. Moreover, anyone with a “mental illness” who is deemed by psychologists as unable to “manage his own affairs” would be a prohibited person."
"The Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 amended the Federal Gun Control Act, 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(9). Under these provisions, it is unlawful for an individual convicted of a state or federal "misdemeanor crime of domestic violence" to "ship, transport, possess or receive firearms or ammunition."
A "misdemeanor crime of violence," pursuant to 18 U.S.C. § 921(33)(a), means an offense that:
has, as an element, the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by a current or former spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse, parent or guardian, or by a person similarly situated to a spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim.
Law enforcement officers and governmental employees (such as security guards or military personnel) art not exempt from this law with respect to their receipt or possession of firearms or ammunition. Therefore, law enforcement and other government employees who have been convicted of a qualifying misdemeanor will not be able to lawfully possess or receive firearms or ammunition or any purposes, including performing their official duties.
Furthermore, the law makes it unlawful for any person, including governmental agencies, to sell or otherwise issue firearms or ammunition to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that the person has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of violence."
So you see, the ball was not dropped by the law. It was dropped by public officials.

Very well-written article, thank you. Although I probably shouldn't waste the time and energy, I do alot of thinking about leftist and what makes them tick. Are they well-meaning people who are simply ignorant of history and the foundations of this great nation? Or do they actually (for whatever reason) wish harm on this nation and its traditions. Incidents like the Arizona shooting tend to reinforce the notion that they really are not good people generally. Sure, there are a minority of Democrats who I'm sure are decent folks, but these idiots like Olbermann really make me sick, and I really think they do not wish good things for their fellow countrymen.
M. B.| 1.12.11 @ 10:56AM
I, too, think the article is a fine one, and I -- like so many others who've responded here -- wish that the Left would have ceased and desisted with the conservative-bashing. As my liberal daughter-in-law said of Loughner, his terrible obsessions, and his horrific act, "Crazy is crazy." I thought that summed it up pretty well. I was grateful she wasn't going to start babbling about "rhetoric" on the right or the left.
Richard, there are some decent Democrats. Believe it or not, I'm still registered as one. (I started to change my registration, but I figure if I can call Warner and Webb -- my Dem. senators -- and tell them I'm a registered Dem., they might take my opinions a tad more to heart. I DID however work with the Republican Party to defeat Rick Boucher. Maybe this little "charade" proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Democrats are, by nature, people who are willing to obfuscate the truth in the name of political ends. I think I'll be contacting the Voter Registration people soon to make the change.)
I have been what I've been calling "a Zell Miller Democrat," the southern variety of Democrat, only slightly "liberal" by today's standards, an anti-Communist who was born and raised in Hialeah, FL. For those of you who don't know South Florida and its history over the past fifty years, let me just say that Hialeah was the cradle of liberty and freedom for many, many Cuban emigrees, a fine people who, at least those who arrived in the early years, were strongly anti-Communist. They KNEW FIRSTHAND what Communism and Socialism really brings.
I've become more entrenched in conservatism since I started paying attention to politics again, and the Democratic Party of my grandmother and great-grandfather is a body that's being inhabited by alien life forms posing as patriots.
My sons, unfortunately, have been steeped in leftist propaganda. They have a liberal father, a Marine when I married him, but one who was already leaning far left after smoking pot in Vietnam. They were brought up in our public schools and listen to NPR and other leftist media outlets. They are firmly entrenched in leftist ideology WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING IT and its ultimate ends. They are the innocent Dems, the ones who've been brainwashed and can't really see the agenda behind globalism, the so-called green movement, the Democratic Party, and the like.
It is for THESE people that it's vital to shine the light on the hypocrisy and veniality of Sheriff Dupnik and the others piping in with the blame game here. Reading Ann Coulter's fully-documented material on the terrible lies that have been fostered by the left via the media proved seminal for me. (As for the quotes by Coulter in a comment above, Coulter uses her ascerbic wit to highlight the level of deceit in the leftist playbook. Anyone taking Coulter, Limbaugh, and others out of context can easily find other such examples on the right. Anyone believing that Coulter, Limbaugh, and others are really calling for violence needs to seek psychiatric help. Such speech has been used by politicians for centuries. Reasonable people -- i.e. conservatives -- understand that this is metaphorical language, not to be confused with literal language. It's obvious right now that many, many Dems don't understand this -- unless one begins to blame a film or a violent video game for the actions of the criminally insane.)
But you're right (pun intended) when you say that the Democratic operatives "do not wish good things for their fellow countrymen." The agenda is clear to those who have eyes to see and ears to hear -- the socialists, Communists, and the fellow travelers "own" that "Party" now, and they want the "fundamental transformation" of the United States of America. They believe that the Constitution is flawed; they want a global socialist/Marxist government where -- or so they foolishly believe -- they (the elites) will party heartily and live well on the backs of those who work hard to make ends meet. Their children will rule someday, after their stint at Harvard (which has become, I guess, a bastion of Marxist thought). They think they know better what we need to be doing, where we need to live and work, what we need to eat, to whom we need to listen and watch, what movies and tv news and internet sources we need to see and access.
If they would only look at history, they'd see a very different picture. Fidel was no Harvard grad, nor was Stalin. Look closely, Leftists, at the past.
Sorry this entry is sooooooooooo long!
I just think its vital that we be calm and wise -- but also we must be HONEST. We must shine the light of Truth onto the machinations of those who want our Constitutional Republic to decline.

Forgot to say that I think that the politicians are the ones (on the Left) who intentionally wish harm (by their actual policies), but that the people.. or sheeple are more just ignorant or uniformed, (not all), and need to wake up to the reality of what their party actually IS.
Margie| 1.12.11 @ 5:54PM
richard ryan,
To answer your question about Leftists and why are they so, and are they ignorant or do they mean harm..
My entire family are Democrats, and they vote Democrat because they think Republicans are bad. My Dad will vote Republican when it comes to the President but somehow locally always votes Dem. I think being a police officer all of his life might have something to do with it,, the unions and all of that, that and his Dad was a Dem and taught him all that he knows.
It's sad that some people just never question why they vote the way that they do, they just act like sheep and do what the family has always done. I'm the black sheep in my family and they just can't believe I'm a conservative. Anyway~ I think that so many people are ignorant~ not intentionally out to do harm.
Most of these people I believe actually live conservatively in their every day lives but will vote for the Left, they just don't get it! My parents are a case in point. Devoted to each other for over 55 yrs. now, live quiet and good lives, but try and reason with them on what their party actually stands for.. nope.
Mom would rather watch The View and glom on to Joy Behar's rantings against Rush Limbaugh.
I "tricked" my Dad once, several years ago. I brought him a copy of the Washington Times newspaper. He read it and his comment was, "that's a good newspaper". I offered to give him a subscription but he refused.
In all, I have resigned myself to the reality that only God can change hearts and minds. In the meantime, I'll still shout the truth from the mountaintops.. until He returns and all is well on the earth and in Heaven.

A significant issue is brought to our attention regarding the immediate eruption of liberal diatribe after this tragedy. Politicians and journalists (like show business folks) are essentially only accountable to public opinion. These two professions, unlike almost every other, have no credentialing nor established standard by which their improper conduct may be independently judged and disciplined.

Well stated, Quin, in your usual eloquence and grace. IMO, I'll only add that the RIGHT has mostly always exhibited what you accurately described, while the LEFT has always exhibited the MSM-assisted propagandized attacks now demonstrated. That is why the LEFT has maintained their political power throughout my lifetime. The RIGHT has simply been too nice in politics in debates, in political campaigns, etc in not aggressively combating and disputing the insanity and disguised political brainwashing used by the LEFT [ie, McCain's refusal to expose Obama's truth, and preventing Palin form doing so]. This is why the RIGHT has been the traditional bridesmaid, and infrequently never the bride, and this simply has to stop. What you stated regarding the necessity of expressing empathy, sorrow, grief, etc is all too true following a tradegy such as this, but make no mistake, when the LEFT immediately and purposely issues their horrendous attacks after such events, same has to be aggressively argued against and disputed. The problem that you described could/should be prevented by the LEFT'S acting humanely and compassionately, but that is simply an impossibility and will/has never happened [since the LEFT is who/what they have always been and forever will be]. The LEFT is the culprit, not the RIGHT here!!!!!!!!!

It is easy to tell oneself that it is the moral high ground to be passive when there are political attacks from the LEFT. But if YOU were persistently and personally the target, I do not think it would be so easy. However there is a bigger issue for me for me. That is this "propaganda machine in action. I do not in good conscience believe it wise to allow the LEFT a free reign. It feels wrong. And, I believe it is morally wrong and i would add cowardly as well. I truly feel that the LEFT agenda must be exposed overtly and directly debated with them. Finally i do not believe in coincidences in general and in this case in particular. When I look at all of the folks involved in the MSM attack machine I believe then that this is coordinated. This should be scary to all ofg us including the writer of this article.

Some of these little trolls are funny and make me laugh out loud here. (note the one above by Old Mexican).
They just don't seem to understand the reality of what's happening right in front of their very eyes. They must be sitting comfy somewhere believing that all of this isn't going to affect them.
They have no idea that if we just sit back silently and allow the Left to win the verbal war, not to mention the actual policy wars that are destroying our freedoms that their freedoms will be taken away as well.
The very reason the Left has gotten away with it so far is because the politicians we hire to go to Washington have "compromised" with them for decades and decades. I guess only when the Jr. jr.'s of the country start feeling it themselves will they wake up, but by then it might be too late.

Jesus isn't in the manger any more. He grew up and became the Lamb of God who died for the sins of the whole world.
Some of His most famous quotes are the following:
"But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why put Me to the test, you hypocrites?" Mt. 22:18.
"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut the kingdom of Heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who would enter to go in." Mt. 23:13.
"And He said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me; in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.' You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men." Mk. 7:6-8.
"You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? "And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?" Lk. 12:56 & 57.
"Behold, I am coming soon, bringing My recompense, to repay every one for what he has done." Rev. 22:12.

And here's yet MORE acts of "tolerance" from Libland:
9/19/2008 Democrat Sandra Bernhard threatened Sarah Palin by saying she wanted to sic her “black brothers” on her to gang-rape her.
9/2/2009 A 65-year-old man had his finger bitten off at a health care rally by a member of Code Pink. The suspect is still at large.
2/12/2010 Amy Bishop showed up to the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus where she opened fire killing three of her colleagues. In 1986 she had shot and killed her brother, but due to friends in the Massachusetts government, she escaped prosecution. Her family had described her of being such a major Obama supporter that it made her “off-puttish”.
2/19/2010 Andrew Joseph Stack III flew his airplane into an IRS building in Austin, Texas killing one and injuring 13. In the manifesto he left behind, he wrote of his anger toward “puppet Bush and his cronies”, the Catholic Church, capitalism, and Big Business, while ranting about his support for socialized health care.
3/25/2010 A bullet was fired through the Richmond office of Republican Representative Eric Cantor.
4/13/2010 A staffer for Republican Governor Bobby Jindal was brutally beaten outside of the SRLC by a gang angry at the Palin button that was worn by the victim.
6/10/2010 James W. von Brunn opened fire at the Holocaust museum in Washington, DC killing a guard. He is a known Holocaust denier, and registered Democrat.
10/23/2010 Ex-Rep. Paul Kanjorski, D-Pa., said that Republican governor of Florida, Rick Scott, should be shot.
1/8/2011 Jared Loughner showed up to a Tuscon, Arizona political event featuring Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and opened fire, killing six and injuring 14 more, including Giffords. Loughner is a 9/11 Truther whose friends described as a “left wing pothead”.

Thank you all for illustrating the point so admirably. People on both sides of the national debate have said things that are harsh and, possibly, ill-advised. Yet, historically, the left is much quicker to scream about any statements of violence against liberal politicians than is the right. And, historically, those espousing liberal causes and positions have been responsible for far more acts of violence than have those on the right.
But, in this case, the person responsible for this violent act espoused no political position what-so-ever. He was obsessed with his main target, Congresswoman Gibbons, and evidently had significant mental health issues.
Words don't kill people, crazy people with guns, or cars, or knives, or gasoline, etc. do.

The problem with trying to other than Roman letters, is that many alphabets do not follow the left to right letters in one plane order. Thai is one of those languages. While khwamru would be knowledge, you left out the sara oo, making it khwamr, which is an incomplete word. Given the failure to follow up with your promised post nearly eight hours later, though, perhaps incomplete is what was intended.
albert constantine jr.| 1.12.11 @ 8:20PM
sorry, should have been "trying to post in other than Roman letters"
Chuang Tzu| 1.12.11 @ 1:34PM
Maybe a little blurb from Chuang Tzu can expand the “angels” angle---
“The Lord of the River said, ‘Men who debate such matters all claim that the minutest thing has no form and the largest thing cannot be encompassed. Is this a true statement?’
Jo of the North Sea said, ‘If from the standpoint of the minute we look at what is large, we cannot see to the end. If from the standpoint of what is large we look at what is minute, we cannot distinguish it clearly. The minute is the smallest of the small, the gigantic is the largest of the large, and it is therefore convenient to DISTINGUISH between them.
But this is a matter of circumstance. Before we can speak of coarse or fine, however, there must be some FORM. If a thing has no form, then numbers cannot express its dimensions, and if it cannot be encompassed, then numbers cannot express its size.
We can use words to talk about the coarseness of things and we can use our minds to visualize the fineness of things. But what words cannot describe and the mind cannot succeed in visualizing---this has nothing to do with coarseness or fineness.
Therefore the Great Man in his actions will not harm others, but he makes no show of benevolence or charity. He will not move for the sake of profit, but he does not despise the porter at the gate. He will not wrangle for goods or wealth, but he makes no show of refusing or relinquishing them.
He will not enlist the help of others in his work, but he makes no show of being self-supporting, and he does not despise the greedy and base. His actions differ from those of the mob, but he makes no show of uniqueness or eccentricity.
He is content to stay behind with the crowd, but he does not despise those who run forward to flatter or fawn. All the titles and stipends of the age are not enough to stir him to exertion; all its penalties and censures are not enough to make him feel shame.
Now do you say that you are going to make Right your master and do away with Wrong, or make Order your master and do away with Disorder?
If you do, then you have not understood the principle of heaven and earth or the nature of the ten thousand things. This is like saying you are going to make Heaven your master and do away with Earth, or make Yin your master and do away with Yang.
Obviously it is impossible.
If men persist in talking this way without stop, they must be either fools or deceivers!”
“Basic Writings, Chuang Tzu”--- translated by Burton Watson
Krugman et al are, INDEED, both fools and deceivers!

You are being accused of being complicit in the obviously insane mass murderer, Jared Loughner's, crime.
Our hearts are open and prayers go to the fallen, the injured and the dead in Arizona this entire week.
But you and I are in major trouble right now because cold blooded liberals are using the tragedy to gain political advantage.
I am reminded of the mad look in Jared Loughner's eyes when I see the desperate fanatic left foaming at the mouth charging conservatives, me and every one of my supporters who sign petitions as "being responsible for the killing."
As the Left decries a "vitriolic" political dialogue marked by irrational anger and ignorance they are, in fact, describing themselves.
While you and I grieve over the loss: Liberal establishment are claiming Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, the Tea Party and all conservative activists are responsible for the tragedy of one lone crazy gunman.
Public Advocate and you are being accused of MURDER.
Everything we have accomplished in the past election is about to be flushed down the toilet if we do nothing and allow this libel to go unchallenged.
Their aim is to silence all conservative voices against any federal judge, Congressman, Senator or Presidentially appointed person.
You will never be able to speak out again against thousands of officials with endless wrongful policies we find out about and oppose.
With the outrageous lies that Palin "targeted" the Congresswoman who was shot and that talk show hosts and conservative groups "directed" this madman to pull the trigger, there is a reverse momentum which we must immediately respond to.
To stop the power grab using the fallen victims, call Senator John McCain at his Phoenix, Arizona Phone: (602) 952-2410 Ask him to call for the removal of the local Sheriff, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, who is leading the effort to abandon the investigation and attack conservatives.
Tell the Senator to make sure the FBI criminal division is in charge and that the House and Senate oversight committees get regular briefings.
Call the Governor Jan Brewer at (602) 542-4331 or email her by filling in a form at http://azgovernor.gov/Contact.asp
Ask her to immediately call for the removal of Sheriff Dupnik who is clearly not doing his sworn duty by being on television 24 hours a day.
The governor must declare him derelict and clearly incompetent in office and step in with state police or cooperate with federal authorities.

Glad to hear it, Tina! Just remember to be well armed with the following:
"Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the Devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the Heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your loins with Truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of Peace; besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the Evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God." Eph. 6:11-17.

I remember hearing a wonderful minister say that before getting out of bed, go through Eph. 14 through 17 mentally, piece by piece. Once you have put on the final piece, "the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God," you can get out of bed.
I think I was just reminded to start doing that again. Daily.
Thanks Margie.

The Congresswoman, the families of the dead and injured are in my prayers. Apparently the shooter was stopped by the police at 0730 the day of the shooting. If his behavior was so bizarre that the Walmart clerk would not sell him bullets, the police should have noticed something weird. This man should be locked up for a long time and treated. When and if he is sane, then he should be tried for murder and receive the death penalty. He is too dangerous to ever be set free. The liberal Dems are the ones who have engaged in hate speech for years and this time is no exception. They are making every attempt to destroy Sarah Palin, Rush and Glen Beck, because they influence millions of people. I hold that sheriff, Democrat congressmen, and liberal pundits in utter contempt for their attempts to use this horrible attack for political gain. Conservatives rid themselves of politicians by the ballot box. We don't shoot them.

What the Left has done needs to be held up to see and remember because the Left will keep doing it. Conservatives and Republicans have generally kept mum as they, their colleagues, and their ideas...even their motives, get painted black by hyper partisans out to win by any means. There is no question the vehemence and vituperation from the RW has been the biggest source of uncivil dialogue in the past decade; and even farther back (remember Newt, railing away while enjoying his adultery on the public dime, not to mention the numerous other Repub hypocrites attacking Clinton for getting blowjobs during office hours, while they were screwing around on the side themselves), so, in effect, the Repubs are getting a taste of their own medicine, and they are not taking it very well.
Having said that, the actions of the Arizona retard cannot be laid at the feet of any particular ideology or political party (maybe his parents?). I was quite surprised to note that the expression on his face in his (I presume) booking photo, was extremely similar to the expression on the face of the guy who tried to burn down the "Man" prematurely at Burning Man a few years ago, after he was later caught at a Catholic Church in San Francisco with incendiary devices. Both maniacs obviously craved glorified attention more than were motivated by any coherent ideology.
BTW, the author fails at an attempt at civility by pretending not to accuse when he obviously intends to do precisely that. So I expect tomorrow the vituperation will crank up once again.
Also btw; Olberman was lousy as a sports commentator. I suspect he never played any. He is no better as a political commentator. He should be ignored.
