WASHINGTON — New Year’s Day in Washington dawned gray and wet,
and cold. It was a perfect day for sightseeing and so my wife and I
decided to sightsee. We went to Mount Vernon, George Washington’s
home, named incidentally after a British Admiral, Admiral Vernon,
by George’s older half-brother. On inheriting the mansion, George
saw no reason to change the name, despite the British Army’s many
acts of rudeness to him. George was a big enough guy not to bear a
grudge.
We arrived just as the estate opened, at 9:00 a.m., and we
were about the only tourists in the place for the first hour. The
very agreeable lady who sold us our tickets, noting our enthusiasm,
inquired as to where we came from. “Twelve miles up the road,” said
my wife. “We don’t get out much.” Actually we do, but not to
sightsee. We have both been reading a lot about George Washington
and so we visited Mount Vernon for the first time in years. Our
reasoning is that with the Tea Party’s arrival in Washington we had
best familiarize ourselves with the Founding Fathers, a goodly
number of whom lived in Virginia. We started with George. Marx is
out.
George Washington was a man of immense proportions. He was
a soldier while still in his teens. Then a planter, and a very
successful planter at that. Then, in middle years, he was a soldier
again, the commander in chief of the Continental Army, who set a
tone for war and peace. He was courageous, occasionally brilliant,
and endured setbacks and despair. He led the British on a wild
chase, ending in their defeat at Yorktown. He believed in
character, fair play, and when he captured a Hessian army he
treated it humanely, despite its barbaric treatment of his troops
in New York. There, a ragtag assortment of patriot soldiers, mainly
very young and the very old, were bayoneted by the Hessians, some
impaled against tree trunks after surrendering.
Washington would not stoop to such barbarism. He was a
moral exemplar with a deep sense of the Almighty. He was famously
tolerant but he was a person of faith. When he went on to become
our first president his example set the template for a republican
presidency up to the present moment, Bill Clinton and Warren G.
Harding notwithstanding. His example and that of the other Founders
is especially important at the present with the arrival in
Washington of the Tea Party movement. There are 87 new Republican
members of Congress, 75 of them endorsed by the Tea Partiers. All
are alive to the principles of the Constitution, the bewildering
debt laid on us by the outgoing Congress, and the debt we are
facing because of 40 years of paternalistic government programs
that are about to bankrupt us. Their enthusiasm for the
Constitution and for getting limited government back on the
national agenda is inspiring.
Yet how successful can they be? The modern Tea Party
movement has no leader. It has no organization. Congresswoman
Michele Bachmann tells us that an organization is in place, but it
had better be awfully good. I fear that an organization with no
leaders is susceptible to having its members picked off, a little
bridge to nowhere here, a little bridge there. There is no George
Washington now. There is only Congressmen Paul Ryan, and a dozen or
so forceful members.
Well, there is the Speaker of the House, John Boehner. His
career is noteworthy for steadiness, conservatism as a governing
philosophy, a knack for being in the right place. He is they say
humble. Of all the virtues, this is the one I have the most
difficulty with. I mean, what is the point? So he is humble. He is
also going to have to be vigilant and steely. His knowledge of
government is going to have to be vast and his sense of which
issues to take on, very clever. The problems facing the country are
huge, but he has reinforcements, the Tea Party movement. It is the
most salubrious addition to politics since the Reagan Revolution.
Welcome to Washington, friends, and get down to Mount Vernon on a
weekend. It is just twelve miles down the road.
Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 1.6.11 @ 6:53AM
Thanks for a history lesson and a wonderful reminder of our roots.
The sense of fair play and honor which was a good foundation laid by the founding fathers has been replaced with a steely cynicism where the public is often misled, so they vote another group in who intends to mislead them again.
Only time will tell if this new crop of Republicans can withstand the coming attacks from the state run media. It looks good now but the public has been lied to and misled so many times it will take quite a storm to wash away the cynicism which covers the nation.
Christian| 1.7.11 @ 3:00AM
If Mr Ryan is not the answer, what is the question
Christian| 1.7.11 @ 3:44AM
I have been one of those guys that read but don't speak. I guess I'm done with that. I'm done with BHO and his media. We need to play offense. Let the progressives speak for them self, lets win the debate. I will no longer suffer fools. Either we have a voice that can articulate a concise message, or we are doomed.
My simple mind, offers this simple point. We can control the narrative! We are the voice of exceptionalism! So lets grab the torch. Let us have the voice of the minorities, the under employed. We need to explain why smaller gov't offers a hand up to those that need a hand. Let us make those that believe in the welfare state explain their accomplishments or lack of(public education). Make them explain why people are so lacking that they need govt. Let's have the debate. As a crazy tea party, conservative, or what ever label they want to paint me with. I will know that my belief is in the individual and no misguided govt will take that from me.
Now can we get a voice that can articulated that?
Margie| 1.7.11 @ 1:41PM
Welcome aboard, Christian, do come here often. It's important to have more voices like yours in the fight.
You just articulated your fine position quite well, keep it up. You have just made yourself part of the answer along with millions of others here.
Cris| 1.7.11 @ 4:58AM
The question is, 'How can you destroy a movement by villifying it's leader, if it doesn't have a leader?'
Individuals like Ryan may come to the fore at the right moment, but no one should be the Tea Party's 'leader'. The appearance of leaderlessness make the Tea Party very hard to kill.
PolishKnight| 1.7.11 @ 10:11AM
Indeed Cris! You stole my very thought!
Leftism's primary defense is to attack it's opponents leaders even with charges that are seemingly innocent as another article in the spectator revealed. Leftists can do no wrong while those on the right have to play by Marquess of Queensberry rule. Oh wait, the right shouldn't be allowed to play at all!
So now the left is left (pardon the pun) with cheap tricks such as running into tea party protest rallies as impersonators.
On the other hand, the left also benefits from a leaderless movement in that people are in love with the principles of big government. A big government they believe in is little different than a theocratic state with the advantage that they get to believe they're better than that. Ironically, it's the leaders of the left that undermine any of the utopian ideals they believe in. Any money that they think they rob from the 'rich' to give to the 'poor' just goes into some Chicago or DC politician's friends' pockets. It's like they buy a rotweiller to terrorize their neighbors and then when it turns on them they gripe "Those neighbors made my dog bad!"
Deborah D | 1.7.11 @ 9:00AM
I'm a firm believer in the idea that the cream rises to the top. When a leader is needed I have faith that the right one will appear. If it's Ryan, hooray. If it is one of the new, articulate, conservative members of the House and Senate, hooray. I just watched a video over at NRO. Diane Sawyer interviewed a few of the newcomers. Smart. All of them. Go here then scroll down the right side. You'll see it: http://www.nationalreview.com/
Margie| 1.7.11 @ 1:33PM
Will go there, Deb, thanks for the link.
I agree with you that the cream always rises to the top.. it's the law of physics, right? :^)
I see plenty of reason to be optimistic because of guys like Paul Ryan and these others that are rising to the surface. The difference between conservatives and Liberals is that conservatives have the kind of principles inside of them and DO them accordingly, while the Lefty Libbys pay lip service.. notice how they get elected by SAYING the right things.. the only way they CAN get elected.. but their hearts are not in it and when elected they practice what's really in their hearts.
As for having a leader, I think we the people ARE the leaders. We will elect accordingly to office those who are to be elected to offices, but as for the TEA party~ no. Remember what Sarah Palin said about that?
"I caution against allowing this movement to be defined by any one leader or any one politician. The Tea Party movement is not a top-down operation, this is about the people, and it's bigger than any king or queen of the Tea Party, and it's a lot bigger than any charismatic guy with a teleprompter."
Down with Kings and Queens!
old white guy| 1.7.11 @ 3:54PM

Yep..and thanks.
Imagine no Liberals, like John Lennon said. Oops, he didn't say that.

Deb, It's true cream does rise to the top. Unfortunately, so does the scum.....example, the last four years of Gangster Government.
Michael Leon Crampton| 1.7.11 @ 10:33PM
Yes, only time willl tell. And speaking of history, prior to George Washington becoming President, our original Patriots, even back to the original Boston Tea Party, had no clearly defined leader. Time will take care of that issue as well. The key to our hard earned freedom was because the "people" were in charge...no politician or social elite. The "people" know what is in their best interest and they need no leader at this time. It's the "peoples time" in this stage of our history and the people will get us out of this mess as long as we stay out of their way. That is what made America so special and so great in the first place. The PEOPLE.

The Constitution should be read aloud first thing every morning in the House and the Senate. Perhaps that would limit the damage being done to freedom, and spur Congress to repair the damage already done.

ID,
At least, it'd cut a couple of hours of "productive" legislating time every day. No way that could hurt!

Every member of the House and the Senate should be given a test on the Constitution and the Federalist Papers. If they can't pass-- they can't run for office. Most will fail--even the GOP.... but at least they have more respect for it than the Dems.
old white guy | 1.7.11 @ 3:56PM
hell, the scotus people probably can't do it. maybe scaliea.
Chistian| 1.7.11 @ 4:03AM
I agree. But does anyone see the irony of today? I read our constitution aloud in 15 mins (try it) As much as I loved the symbolism, in my head I couldn't get away from the fact that it took hours.
Thats right the reading of the worlds greatest document(I'm declaration guy) showed that even reading our founding document could not be done by govt. Anyone else see the irony
Margie| 1.7.11 @ 1:48PM
Well, maybe they should've had one person read it, but hey~ at least they read it! :^)
I give mucho kudos to whoever suggested doing this. Was it Boehner? THIS is what the people who elected them really want to see. Thanks, guys!
And they ought to do that a LOT more often.
Louis Jenkins| 1.6.11 @ 8:33AM
75 Republicans endorsed by the Tea Party. A small amount by any standard. There has to be more, and we should all be busy getting them lined up for 2012, if we have a 2012 election.
Bachman has throw her bonnet in the ring? Well, that's a beginning.
A leaderless sub-party? The Tea Party set out to be leaderless. Hard to attack a party when it doesn't have a leader. But the MSM folks have attacked it anyway. Hope they enjoy themselves.
"He is also going to have to be vigilant and steely. His knowledge of government is going to have to be vast and his sense of which issues to take on, very clever."
Boehnor will have to have these characteristics and then some. We're in for a struggle, as this may be our last.
Brooklyn Dave| 1.6.11 @ 3:22PM
The local Tea Party in Manahattan is not quite defunct but not as active as it was, let's say six months ago. But, if something really large happens, I'd say most of the folks will get themselves re-energized. Now that we have a GOP majority in the house (with the newbies largely fiscal conservative Tea Party folks), we can't sit on our laurels. We have to scrutinize them even though we elected them. NO McCains, Snows, Lindsey Grahams, or Scott Browns. As easily as we put you in there, we can boot you out.
Margie| 1.7.11 @ 1:58PM
"Bachman has thrown her bonnet into the ring.."

Dan Hirsch| 1.6.11 @ 9:03AM
Mr. Tyrell, Jr,
Humility in leaders is NOT a ad thing.
Did you find any braggadocio in your reading about George Washington?
I remember President Reagan stating (approximately) that you can get a lot done if you don't worry about who gets the credit.
Even Christ washed the feet of those who followed Him and were to serve His purposes.
I'm thinking Speaker Boehner won't be seen on video washing Democrats' feet. But, with the Main Stream, Drive by media, an approach from a humble direction will, if nothing else, confuse the crap out of them. It'll also be the slightest bit harder to portray as "divisive." It also reflects on character, in this Speaker's case it is most vivid in contrast to Ms. former Speaker 'Where's MY Gulfstream?' Pelosi.
I, for one, loved the three busloads of siblings and nieces and nephews riding the bus from Ohio. I also got a good laugh at the MSM worried comments about what a long bus ride ten hours is! Obviously, they've never driven anywhere!
Nolite me conculcare!
Dan Hirsch| 1.6.11 @ 9:04AM
AND it's not a Bad thing, either.
Danged ol' fingers...
Margie| 1.6.11 @ 3:20PM
I liked this comment.
I truly do not believe that some people understand the true definition of the word humble.
It does not mean weak. Just as the word meek does not mean weak.
The world has its definition. To understand what God means by humble.. if they really want to understand it.. they can pick up a Bible and read it.
God called Moses.. meek. Meek isn't timid.
God also says that the meek will inherit the earth.
And that He enjoys those who are humble and tremble at His word. (Is. 66:2).
So, humble is a GOOD thing.
I do get the gist of what Mr. Tyrrell is saying though.
I think he's asking does he have what it takes?
Well, let us pray that he does.
Conservatives who are also humble, will be praying earnestly for him.
old white guy| 1.7.11 @ 4:01PM
in your humility do not get stepped on.
Margie| 1.7.11 @ 6:16PM
old white guy:
Have you seen me ever lay down and take it? :^)
Come to think of it these politicians could do well to read some of my posts.. as well as most others here. Now, how's that for humble?
Anyhow, humble sure has nothing to do with laying down at all.. just acknowledging that power really belongs to God.
Nancy in NC| 1.6.11 @ 4:52PM
Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.
We definitely have a shortage of humility in the District of Corruption. One can barely move without running into a huge ego.
So humility is not the problem.
But Speaker Boehner is going to need nerves of steel and the will to follow through on what the GOP promised to deliver.
But to assume the GOP will do the right thing? I am not planning on it. We must stay diligence...so much for sunshine patriots. The problem, IMHO, is we have expected our elected servants to do the right thing...they have not. To keep doing the same thing and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. It's up to us, We the People, to keep their feet to the fire. If we can't make them see the light, then we must let them feel the heat.
Margie| 1.6.11 @ 5:42PM
Nancy,
Well said.

Margie| 1.6.11 @ 1:19PM
Because I wrote a homage to Mr. Stein and at the same time repudiated the other posters who were speaking filth. His threads are always filled with trolls posting vile comments.
You will have to ask the editors and or authors why they chose to remove my friendly post and left the other vile ones there, including the above one I mentioned.
Seems the resident Tim* who nows posts as Clint enjoys a certain manor of protection by these editors or authors.. who must share the anti-semitic hatred with those who post as he does.
Why else do they allow those posts to stand?

I saw nothing anti-semitic in the comments that were critical or made fun of Stein--although some of the remarks were mean-spirited and spiteful.
It just baffled me to see that your comments were removed, since you defended him.
Puzzling. It must have been Ben who removed them. Why? I can't imagine.

Sorry for the double post.
Let me add this and then I won't trouble anyone again:
This VILE Tim*/Clint has posted IN MY NAME things that I would never say.
For example he posted in my name saying comments such as "all practicing Jews and others go to hell".
Then later he would antagonize me in all future threads by saying: "Tell the AmSpec readers where you say "all practicing Jews and others got to Hell".
He also posted in my name saying that I added Catholicism to a list of -isms- where I included Communism, Socialism, et al in which I was speaking about the Left.
Ken (OldTex) even commented that it was one of my BEST posts ever.
I was very encouraged by that.
Then he posted in my name adding "Catholicism" to my list.
This turned a lot of people against me, though I tried to proclaim that it WAS NOT ME.
His latest slander is that I want him arrested.
Well, he previously posted FALSLY in my name saying this.
I NEVER SAID IT!
This man is a liar and slanderer and he is getting away with it.
Why is this allowed to stand?

Tea Party Patriots Mission Statement and Core Values
Mission Statement
The impetus for the Tea Party movement is excessive government spending and taxation. Our mission is to attract, educate, organize, and mobilize our fellow citizens to secure public policy consistent with our three core values of Fiscal Responsibility, Constitutionally Limited Government and Free Markets.
Core Values
* Fiscal Responsibility
* Constitutionally Limited Government
* Free Markets
Fiscal Responsibility: Fiscal Responsibility by government honors and respects the freedom of the individual to spend the money that is the fruit of their own labor. A constitutionally limited government, designed to protect the blessings of liberty, must be fiscally responsible or it must subject its citizenry to high levels of taxation that unjustly restrict the liberty our Constitution was designed to protect. Such runaway deficit spending as we now see in Washington D.C. compels us to take action as the increasing national debt is a grave threat to our national sovereignty and the personal and economic liberty of future generations.
Constitutionally Limited Government: We, the members of The Tea Party Patriots, are inspired by our founding documents and regard the Constitution of the United States to be the supreme law of the land. We believe that it is possible to know the original intent of the government our founders set forth, and stand in support of that intent. Like the founders, we support states' rights for those powers not expressly stated in the Constitution. As the government is of the people, by the people and for the people, in all other matters we support the personal liberty of the individual, within the rule of law.
Free Markets: A free market is the economic consequence of personal liberty. The founders believed that personal and economic freedom were indivisible, as do we. Our current government's interference distorts the free market and inhibits the pursuit of individual and economic liberty. Therefore, we support a return to the free market principles on which this nation was founded and oppose government intervention into the operations of private business.

Clint, you obviously have a limited vocabulary. Can't you come up with some fresh words to describe people you don't like?
You keep sounding like the little boy on the playground screaming "Neener, Neener, Neener".
You know, Clint, I keep recalling a sentence spoken by Jesus, (Margie, you want to help me out?)
Something about foxes having dens but the Son of Man having no place to lay his head...
Well, in 1947 we as Americans declared that the Jews would have a country in which to "lay their heads".
It really is that simple, Clint. We put the full faith and power of the United States of America behind that promise.
Heh, we Texans sorta' look at Israel like the Alamo; surrounded as they are by millions of raving lunatic murderers.
Sir, I am not an "Israel Firster". I am for holding up America's honor. Obviously you are not.
That's fine. You didn't give YOUR word in the promise, did you?

Quin said it was not his doing, but editors/Monitors.
No mistakes, but deliberate.
I've been warned.
Quin got me unbanned. Conditionally. For name calling, heh. To Tim*!!!
Do you see what is all around you here?
And W. III says he isn't the "James" that Tim*/Clint speaks of when he says to "talk to James". He said he'd say it publicly if I wanted him to, a nice enough guy he is, and I thanked him, but told him I would go back in the thread to say that it wasn't him.. (I thad taken Tim*s/Clint's "James" to mean him and made a comment to that effect and so corrected myself). He said they're working on something to make it so that other's can't post using other's names, though I don't know how they could do it.
Ah, well such is life. I will not quit calling an ace an ace though, so I may be through here.

RET, Interesting contract to Stein's article of yesterday that gamboled through a part of the American mindset many of us don't wish to visit.
Suffice to say, your family sojourn to Mount Vernon and the significance of the lessons attached are indeed worthwhile treks through the essense of what real America stands for.

After Mount Vernon, new members of congress, and all conservatives, should read the book Gut Feeling: Why Your First Instinct Is Always Right.
It's the first time, in print, that conservatism has been truly explained in a way that would illustrate how many who think they're liberal are actually conservative.
Check out excerpts for yourself at gutfeelingbook [dot] com. It's something all of our representatives should know and study, and then have the guts to articulate.
My apologies for the promo, but I sincerely believe it adds to the discussion in a very positive way. See for yourself.

While we're on the subject of Congressional orientation; here's my list.
1) Reading of the constitution at the opening of EVERY new Congress; to remind them of what they just swore to uphold.
2) Visit to Mt Vernon; to re-visit first principles as applied to character.
3) Visit to Arlington National Cemetery; for understanding of how many have paid a price.
4) Visit to Holocaust Museum; for understanding the results of tyranny abroad.
5) Visit to headquarters of FannieMae, FreddieMac, HHS and Social Security; for perspective in how far Congress has come with the re-distribution distraction.

My reply to Bob's excellent question is that we DO NOT NEED LEADERS, as THE WHOLE IS GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS. All it will take is for each and every one of us TO VOTE. If Republicans, Democrats, Independents, or whatever fail to legislate as promised, then the simple solution is to REMOVE SAID POLITICIAN AND TO REPLACE SAME WITH ONE THAT WILL ACT AS WE REQUEST/DEMAND!!!!!

Glad you enjoyed your visit to Mount Vernon. The Ladies Association of Mount Vernon have done an outstanding job, improving the grounds each year. I last saw Mount Vernon on President's Day a few years ago to see the new education center and museum. The staff and volunteers were remarkably knowledgeable. Mount Vernon, which operates with no government support, demonstrates the power of private activity, from its rescue by a single woman in the 1850s (Pamela Ann Cunningham?) to today. It is a great and inspiring place.

Several years ago, hubby and I took a trip to Virginia for a few days. We went to Monticello one day and Mt Vernon the next...our first time to visit these wonderful places. It was a very moving experience, and I came away with the deep feeling that we Americans are so very fortunate to have had individuals like Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and many others (known and unknown) giving their all in the formation of this wonderful country. Their wisdom, courage, and sacrifice moved me to tears.
I'll never forget it. It was very inspiring.

Mr. Tyrrel,
I respectfully disagree with one part of your article.
Humility is the most important of all virtues, in my opinion. For pride is the father of sin.
Christ constantly preached for us to be humble and contrite. For a public servant it is mandatory, if you don't want a crook in office.

The debt is not going to be repaid. What's another trillion dollars?
WRJonas| 1.6.11 @ 4:34PM
I disagree with the declaration of humility as the greatest virtue. The rarest and most difficult to find is faithfulness (obedience). Even Christ struggled to maintain his faithfulness.
Since all fall short of perfect obedience the best we can do is strive constantly and pray for forgiveness when we fail.
Nick| 1.6.11 @ 4:47PM
WRJonas,
That's why we need humility.
We have to admit to ourselves and confess to Almighty God that we can't be faithful and obedient without His help.
We must cry out to the Lord, "I can do nothing without you." The second we decide we can do it on our own, that is when we fall.
"4 Abide in me: and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine: you the branches. He that abides in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit: for without me you can do nothing."
- The Gospel According to Saint John (15:4-5)
Ken (Old Texican)| 1.6.11 @ 6:17PM
WR, Nick,
You are both right!
I've always kinda' sided with the apostle, Paul:
..."Faith, Hope, and Agape'...and the greatest of these is Agape'"
If God had not loved us, we would not be able to achieve either humility OR obedience. We wouldn't know how without Christ.
Huldah1776| 1.6.11 @ 6:19PM
Humble. I have heard this used as a descriptor of George Washington who did not want to be king, but President, and for only 2 terms. Humble, knowing your weaknesses, makes you stronger than someone who thinks he has no weaknesses. Learned that in a Dirty Harry movie. :)
Margie| 1.6.11 @ 6:26PM
Folks,
I have found a really great site, maybe some of you have already discovered it. It's called Wikiquotes. It's fabulous for typing in any of the Founding Fathers names for a quick study or for posting.
Enjoy.
For example, here is a quote by George Washington where his humble spirit shines.. and one that every politician ought to imitate.. or emulate, and us, too:
"But lest some unlucky event should happen unfavorable to my reputation, I beg it may be remembered by every gentleman in the room that I this day declare with the utmost sincerity, I do not think myself equal to the command I am honored with."
~Washington's formal acceptance of command of the Army (16 June 1775), quoted in The Writings of George Washington : Life of Washington (1837) edited by Jared Sparks, p. 141

Perhaps, Democrats, who evidently know the Constitution so well that they have no need of hearing it read, can find the "Good and Welfare Clause" and "Good and Plenty Clause." John Conyers said that both are in the Constitution and he is a Democrat, a lawyer, and has been in Congress for 46 years. Surely, Congressman Conyers is correct. I am, supposedly, just a dumb subject amongst the unwashed masses.
“Under several clauses, the GOOD AND WELFARE CLAUSE and a couple others. All the scholars, the constitutional scholars that I know -- I’m chairman of the Judiciary committee, as you know -- they all say that there’s nothing unconstitutional in this bill and if there were, I would have tried to correct it if I thought there were.” - John Conyers
“The government is empowered to do anything it deems necessary or useful under the ‘GOOD AND PLENTY' CLAUSE. The Founding Fathers were wise enough to realize they couldn’t foresee the kinds of powers that would be needed in the future. So, they created language in that pretty much says we can do whatever we want if we think it’s for the benefit of the people. Forcing people to buy health insurance surely falls within this broad grant of authority." - John Conyers

OK, libbies, are you "Good and Ready" to find the "Good and Welfare" and "Good and Plenty" Clauses? Are they before or after the “Three Musketeers,” “Kit-Kat” and “Snickers” Clauses?

Although this column was true and a delight to read, the sad fact is that a majority of Americans do not care a hoot for the man. Almost all on the left and even many on the right have no respect for American traditions or American history. And, truth be told, Washington wouldn't care much for how degraded the United States has become, a nation where perversion is applauded and honor is laughed at.
Margie| 1.7.11 @ 1:54PM
No, Washington wouldn't much care for it, and neither do we.
One thing I am sure about though. He would never give in to it.. and would fight to the death to save it.
And the reason "most Americans" don't care a hoot for Washington is because they are being taught in their public schools that he was a white racist, along with the rest of the Founders.
It's up to us t set them straight.. when given the opportunity to do so.
We do the best we can with what we've got, I like to say.
Onward, Derek!

George Washington is one of the giants of history. Without his steadfast and calm determination, the Revolution might have faltered. Without his humility and commitment to Republican government, our early nation could have quickly evolved into a monarchy. His simple act of giving up power voluntarily, and passing his office to his elected successor, was a milestone in political history. He fought in vain against the growing partisanship at the end of his second term, as the Adams and Jefferson factions split and the tenor of political debate became even nastier and more fractious than it is today.
In his farewell address in 1796, he spoke at length about the primacy of a national American identity, and warned us against those who would place regional identities above the Union:
"Citizens, by birth or choice, of a common country, that country has a right to concentrate your affections. The name of American, which belongs to you in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of patriotism more than any appellation derived from local discriminations. ... With such powerful and obvious motives to union, affecting all parts of our country, while experience shall not have demonstrated its impracticability, there will always be reason to distrust the patriotism of those who in any quarter may endeavor to weaken its bands. ... To the efficacy and permanency of your Union, a government for the whole is indispensable. No alliance, however strict, between the parts can be an adequate substitute; they must inevitably experience the infractions and interruptions which all alliances in all times have experienced. Sensible of this momentous truth, you have improved upon your first essay, by the adoption of a constitution of government better calculated than your former for an intimate union, and for the efficacious management of your common concerns. This government, the offspring of our own choice, uninfluenced and unawed, adopted upon full investigation and mature deliberation, completely free in its principles, in the distribution of its powers, uniting security with energy, and containing within itself a provision for its own amendment, has a just claim to your confidence and your support. Respect for its authority, compliance with its laws, acquiescence in its measures, are duties enjoined by the fundamental maxims of true liberty. The basis of our political systems is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government. But the Constitution which at any time exists, till changed by an explicit and authentic act of the whole people, is sacredly obligatory upon all. The very idea of the power and the right of the people to establish government presupposes the duty of every individual to obey the established government."

As I began reading these posts I was delightedwith the mature manner in which you were handling this so very important subject: the welfare of our nation, as I teach our true Christian history and have been, since 1981, while praying for our country. Many of the prayers I began with (along with my husband, now in our heavenly home) have been answered. Now, having just celebrated my ninetieth birthday, I had the joy of reading the wonderful things you folks were writing and are not ashamed to own that Christ, our saviour and God, who is in control-even when children play games (not nice ones!) with words. I greatly respect those of you who are mature enough to recognize who our enemy is and deal with that warfare properly. Also, it made me very happy to hear you speak so favorably about my hero, General George Washington. The more I learn about Washington, the more I admire him as a man who knew who he was as well as who God is. One must have "the mind of Christ" in order to properly appreciate this great person. We cannot appreciate Washington unless we see him through spirit controlled eyes. This I have learned by reading various books and commentaries about the "Father of our Country" by those who claim to be writing about him, seeing him only as one like themselves and like their own contemporaries compared with those who, by reading our Founding Father's original writings and the writings by persons contemporary with that great man, have discovered the real General Washington.
This goes right along with learning about others of our Christian leaders who gave up their lives for the freedom our God intended/intends we should have. I am so proud of all of you who are now taking up the battle to make our country even greater than it has been-which our Founders would be delighted to see if they could, from where they now reside-along with my beloved husband! "We are more than conquerors through him who loved us and gave himself for us." May we all trust him for VICTORY! With him we can do all things. May I invite you to my web site: www.AmericanChristianHistory.com? Let us continue to pray earnestly and fervently.
