The Scandal of Being Republican

Media double standards keep the GOP on the defensive.

Even before they were sworn into office, Republican freshmen in the 112th Congress had already shocked the political press corps in the nation’s capital.

A group of the incoming GOP representatives scheduled a fundraiser with country singer LeAnn Rimes as the star attraction and this event was treated by Politico reporters Ken Vogel and Marin Cogan as the biggest scandal since Teapot Dome.

How dare those Republicans try to raise money to get themselves re-elected?

This kind of ginned-up controversy typifies the political double standards that suffuse the work of America’s political journalists. Anything can be portrayed as scandalous as long as it involves Republicans, because the GOP is presumed to be The Party of Wrong and Evil. Yet no Democrat’s words or deeds, not even the most heinous crime, can ever qualify as evidence that the Democratic Party is anything but a force for all that is Good and Right.

Call this the Mary Jo Kopechne Memorial Principle of Journalism: Ted Kennedy’s drunken Chappaquiddick revel that resulted in the death of a young campaign aide never prevented reporters from hailing him as “The Lion of the Senate” who was, among other things, taken seriously as an advocate of women’s rights. And really, who could find anything amiss in a “waitress sandwich” between two Democrats?

By way of comparison, former Sen. George Allen once made a sarcastic remark, which is why he is now called a “former Senator.”

Democrats can go to prison for corruption (Rep. William Jefferson of Louisiana) or be censured for ethics violations (Rep. Charlie Rangel of New York) and no reporter ever considers this a reflection on the Democratic Party in general. Yet every would-be Woodward and bush-league Bernstein knows in his heart that GOP politicians are all crooked, so that an army of intrepid investigative journalists stands eternally ready to pounce on the Pulitzer Prize to be won by exposing a Republican scandal. And while they wait for the next great “-Gate” to come along, they amuse themselves by making nefarious Nixonian mountains out of the routine molehills of politics.

This attitude of the press puts Republicans permanently on the defensive and induces a flinch reflex to accusations of wrongdoing. So it was with the LeeAnn Rimes fundraiser, hosted by 11 recently-elected Republican lawmakers led by California’s Jeff Denham. Two weeks ago, conservative blogger Matt Lewis reported that tickets to the event were $2,500, with $50,000 “Platinum Sponsor” packages for VIPs who bought eight tickets. For good measure, Lewis added some juicy tidbits about the featured entertainer, who had recently performed in a “Sexy Santa” costume and once admitted to having an extramarital affair.

Headlined “LeAnn Rimes Headlines Pricey ‘Swearing-In’ Event for GOP Freshmen,” Lewis’s item at AOL’s Politics Daily site was enough to send Republicans scurrying for cover as if they had themselves been caught in flagrante delicto with Rimes. A spokesman for John Boehner said that the incoming Speaker of the House wouldn’t be attending the suddenly scandal-tainted event, and the Politico reporters had no trouble finding anonymous Republican consultants to tut-tut the very idea of hosting a fundraiser that was “in direct contradiction to the image that leadership is trying to portray,” as one of them said.

Raising large sums of campaign money at big events with famous singers would damage the Republican image. Apparently, GOP consultants are advising congressmen to beg for tiny sums at small events featuring obscure entertainers.

The idea that it’s wrong for Republicans to raise campaign cash was a favorite theme of the press corps during the recent mid-term election. In the final weeks of the fall campaign, reporters parroted accusations made by the Democratic National Committee that “secret foreign money” was funding the GOP. Voters in key congressional districts were bombarded with TV commercials that warned: “Karl Rove. Ed Gillespie. They’re Bush cronies… . They’re stealing our democracy, spending millions from secret donors to elect Republicans to do their bidding in Congress.” Reporters who actually bothered to check out those accusations never found any smoking guns and the voters didn’t seem the least bit scandalized, handing the GOP its biggest House majority in more than 60 years.

Lost amid all the headlines about Republican fundraising, meanwhile, was the fact that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised over $162 million in the 2010 election cycle — some $30 million more than was raised by the National Republican Congressional Committee — and in district after district, Democrat incumbents significantly out-raised their GOP challengers. In Pennsylvania’s 10th District, for example, Democrat Rep. Chris Carney raised more than $1.6 million for the campaign and was beat by Republican Tom Marino, who raised less than $700,000. Marino was one of the freshmen who co-hosted Tuesday night’s LeeAnn Rimes fundraiser and, like other Republicans in swing districts, he knows that when he seeks re-election next year, he’ll face a well-funded Democrat opponent whose sources of campaign cash will never be treated as a headline-worthy scandal by the political press.

Beyond the shocking news that Republicans were raising money to get re-elected, there were no immediate reports of scandalous wrongdoing at Tuesday’s event. There were evidently no drunk-driving incidents, nor any reported fatalities among GOP campaign aides. And Mary Jo Kopechne could not be reached for comment.

Right on brother. I too am sick & tired of being on the defensive. We need to use the same tactics against the leftists that they have been using on us for what seems like forever.

House GOP Repeatedly Promised $100 Billion In Spending Cuts That It Now Calls ‘Hypothetical’

It has been said that Republicans believe the same on Wednesday as they did on Monday, regardless of what happened on Tuesday.

Apparently, the exception is election Tuesdays.

Uppity Peasant| 1.7.11 @ 10:49PM

What does cutting unnecessary pork barrel spending have to do with legitimate fundraising for reelection?

Dave | 1.6.11 @ 12:03PM

Boehner's latest back-out from the Rimes fund raiser is typical of "Weepy Johnny" and the way he's always ducked into CYA mode when a little heat begins seeping through the grate.

I don't like Boehner leading this current posse.

Having said that -- allow me to keep my commentary a bit more compact and closer to on point ...

To the liberal, pro Democrat, socialist media diaper babies reading this and other conservative postings, allow me to extend a sincere and heart felt invitation:

Good advice, as usual. But the Stupid Party won't take it. They have spent most of their lives imitating Jello and walking with their tails between their legs they couldn't muster the courage or wisdom to do anything but run away. Instead of greeting reporters and saying "Yeah, LeAnn Rimes is singing for our fund raiser - isn't she great. Oh, well we need to raise funds for elections and so forth so she volunteered her time and talent because she agrees with a lot of our platform and wants to help. You know, like George Soros helps the Democrats with millions of dollars every year to bring Socialism to America. We need help too. Care to sit and listen to her sing?" Be polite and inject Soro's billions every second of the day in every news report about fund raising.

No, no. The Stupid Party is WAY to stupid for that. Idiots.

geokster from TX| 1.5.11 @ 12:44PM

I have no idea where Ms. Rimes political interests lie, I don't care and I suspect her booking agent doesn't either. She would probably happily headline at a midget mud wrestling event if the price was right. She's an entertainer and makes her money entertaining.

Now,,, if she had stood up before the crowd and delivered a captivating speech on the value of conservatism, (a la Sarah Palin), THAT would be newsworthy. Otherwise... yawn.

Seek| 1.5.11 @ 2:39PM

Right you are. LeAnn Rimes' political views ought to be of no concern to anyone. She's a singer. Someone hires her; she comes and sings. She's a professional entertainer. Yeesh. When Elton John played at Rush Limbaugh's recent wedding, that wasn't an endorsement of Rush's politics any more than it was an endorsement of Keith Olbermann's politics. To gay activists worldwide, however, you'd think E.J. had committed a crime against humanity.

It's time for separation of culture and politics. I'm as against the Right conflating the two ("culture war") as I am against the Left doing the same thing.

simon templar| 1.5.11 @ 3:30PM

So you want the seperation of culture and politics? Do you even know what culture is? What you are really arguing for is politics seperated from morality, religious belief and conviction. The exact recipe for destruction of our republic as stated by our founding fathers. I have not forgot your other post where you described religious conviction as theocratic garbage. Look , no one cares if you are a boy who likes other boys..we just do not want to be forced to approve of it.

Seek| 1.5.11 @ 3:36PM

Nobody's forcing you to approve of LeAnn Rimes, Elton John or anyone else. That's political freedom and cultural freedom rolled into one. Our Founders were not the sorts of people who sought to create a moral police force overseeing this or that recording artist, actor or any other performer.

By the way, who exactly is the troll on this site? It sure isn't me. Debate is fine. I have no problem with differences of opinion. Threats, however, are something else. Tone of voice is everything.

DG in GA| 1.5.11 @ 4:13PM

Ah, but do you realize that appearing at an event on behalf of conservatives is considered career suicide by the Hollywood (and Nashville) left? I'm not kidding. I've seen story after story written by conservatives in show biz who say that once they "came out" as conservatives, they were virtually unemployable.

That said, I think it's high time the Republicans collectively "grew a pair" and stood up to the media and the liberals. They haven't done anything wrong; they have nothing to hide from. Politicians on the right should know they will NEVER win the favor of the liberal media, so they should stop trying. Do the right thing, people. It's the voters who elect you, not the media.

carnot| 1.5.11 @ 4:30PM

blackknights1802| 1.5.11 @ 7:18AM

LeAnn Rimes? She headlined a big rally for Al Gore. Has she seen the light or just another celebrity going where the money is?

As long as this fund-raiser was not illegal and not one dime of tax payer was used. I say....The media can go fornicate themselves.

Stephanie| 1.5.11 @ 8:24AM

I was thinking the same thing Melvin! Why does it matter if it's a fund raiser and what does that have to do with being fiscally responsible? What a bunch of scaredy cats. They should be raising money and celebrating to keep their focus and momentum up. They will need it next year for the election.

martin j smith| 1.5.11 @ 8:02AM

The first step in recovery is to admit that you take everything critical of Republicans seriously.
The second step of recovery is to respond by telling the MSM folk to take a shower( cold one ) because they are liars. The expression" look who is calling the kettle blac" applies ever so well to MSMs
The third step of recovery is to selectively go above the media and directly to the American People and explain to them the republican position such as about Obama Care .
The fourth step of recovery is to challenge Democrat Socialists to a debate--not mediated by a MSM interlocur, but two hosts one chosen by each party.
The firth step of recovery is to develop a political war room specifically geared to dealing with the MSM
The sixth step in recovery is to develop local watchdogs for any efforts to trample on the conititutional rights of citizens such as freedom of speech.
The seventh step of recovery is to monitor education and the way it is delivered. Is it real learning or one sided propaganda ?
The eighth step in recovery is to bolster local Tea Party groups and help them to choose effective candidates. In addition to being politcally effective in other issues aside from elections.
The ninth step of recovery is to be confident in the correctness of your position to the point that MSMers will avoid interviewing Repub Tea Partiers for fear of being made to loo the fools they are
The tenth step of recovery is to have effective counter propaganda and to develop town halls to enable citizens to ask and get questions answered
The eleventh step is tohave a nation presence that the MSM is no longer so kick to do hit peices with oput serious counter attacks.
The last step is to effective win elections.

davelnaf| 1.5.11 @ 8:11AM

Do Congressional Republicans need some kind of reverse sensitivity training to help them overcome the delusion that the MSM still matters to a lot of people?

daddio| 1.6.11 @ 12:03PM

No, they just need to grow a pair...

Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 1.5.11 @ 8:44AM

The DNC may have raised more money than the RNC last year, but I don't believe for one second, that Democratic Candidates raised more money than Republican Candidates did in the end. The Democrats backed the same old horses in most of their races, while the Republicans had to do battle with the Tea Party in a whole bunch of the primaries nationwide, so the money was spread out all over the place. As for myself, I didn't send the RNC one single penny of mine, but I did send money to 30 different Conservative Candidates, so that might explain the difference in the amount of money raised (if I'm a good example?). And if you're wondering, I was 8 wins-22 losses, and I wouldn't change a thing (except maybe O'Donnell). The RNC talks a lot more friendly about the Tea Party now, than they did just six months ago, so you know we shook them up. The overthrow of the RNC starts today with the 112th Congress, but it's not going to end with them, we're just warming up.

I'm the President of my local Tea Party Chapter (and its only member), and I support this message!!

And another good thing about today, our long National nightmare is finally over, after being held hostage for the last 63 years, there is no Kennedy in Congress anymore. So the Kennedy myth will begin to fade away, just like water under a bridge.

Tom| 1.5.11 @ 10:54AM

It depends on how you count the money. More money was raised by Republicans, however a large percentage of that money was raised by primary election losers. Democratic nominees raised more money than Republican nominees.

This was mainly a function of there being far more Republicans entered into contested primaries. If you look at money spent by nominees, rather than party totals, the Democratic party had an edge of about 200K in money spent for House seats and a deficit of 1.5M in money spent for Senate seats.

For anyone wanting to look at actual data on election spending opensecrets.org is a great resource. For instance it destroys the myth that Wall Street money flows to Republicans.

Redstateboy| 1.5.11 @ 9:02AM

My sweetheart has the habit of watching the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams (not to worry, she's Right of Attila the Hun) and they did a spot that IKEA was going to stop selling incandescent light bulbs and that - fully 50% of Americans don't know that a ban on those bulbs has be implimented by Congress.. My point? Here was a perfect opportunity to actually do some REPORTING!! Be a NEWS source!! they could've reported certain Liber-ul Socialist countries are now repealing their respective Bans on incandescent light bulbs due to the danger posed by florescent replacement bulbs breaking but Nooooo.... being owned by GE and the mouthpiece for the Hussein Administration.. they're independent journalists - they should be ashamed of themselves.. "News organization" my A$$

JWill| 1.5.11 @ 11:08AM

Just to be clear. From a business standpoint(from a bit of an insider), GE took a hit from the the government ban on incandescent bulbs. They had plants both here in the US and Europe that didn't retool to produce florescent bulbs, they closed. Effectively killing that investment.

Thankfully(as a GE share holder), GE is separating itself from that disgraceful news service(and network). And reinvesting in the core businesses that made it one of the great corporations in the world.

To the other point of your comment, it's not illegal(although sometimes newsworthy) to lie in advertising. It happens all the time.

Say, for instance: "Our deodorant will not cause premature hair loss in men!" While true, it's lying by omission(as I'm unaware of any that do).

Advertising execs learn how to do that as part of their high priced college educations. So it's very common. Integrity in advertising(and sadly, in journalism as well) is sadly not.

They both know, and prey upon the fact, that people are gullible, ignorant and lazy.

Just saying.

JW

Tom| 1.5.11 @ 12:53PM

If GE took a hit on the outlawing of incandescent bulbs why did they lobby to have them outlawed?

Beyond that the regulations allow the manufacturing of lower watt bulbs until 2014. GE wanted to get rid of high cost American factories, the energy regulations gave them cover.

blackknights1802| 1.5.11 @ 5:28PM

As a share holder, you know that GE is working directly with Iran. You know, the country that is manufacturing IED’s that are killing our boys in uniform. But that’s OK right. Let’s not get in the way of profits. Guess the old saying money talks & BS walks, fits.

JWill| 1.5.11 @ 9:49PM

I do know, and I mean KNOW, that GE does a good deal of work for the defense industry. I have not read anything in the financial prospectus and report entitled "The profitable division that deals with IRAN". So NO, I haven't seen anything to suggest that, either now or during the 20 years I worked for them.
Prior to working for GE, I spent 6 years in uniform myself, and saw first hand a good number of things manufactured by GE that the Navy used on a daily basis. Never saw any technical support written in Arabic.

So I've put my money, and my own safety where my mouth is.

Your insinuation against my character is unwarranted.

It's a big company...massive, in fact. And it would not surprise me if they had some overseas relationships that were unsavory.

During my time in the service, I was in crypto and communications, and even during the Reagan administration, our own government was guilty of supplying, training and generally being involved with bad guys...I read the reports.

Things are rarely black and white. I'm not saying there isn't wrong and right though.

I've just been out there enough to know that no huge entity, either government or private, is all good.

If throwing rocks makes you feel better, fine. My house isn't made out of glass.

Louis Jenkins| 1.5.11 @ 9:03AM

It is amazing, Ted Kennedy could sell chicken crap as chicken salad, and media would go wild with enthusiasm. This morning I watched the morning news as I got ready for work. They tut-tutted and fu-fued the Republican House majority. They're definately not going to give them the space to turn around. So why bother justifying a big dollar gala held by Republicans? Just do it.

MikeD| 1.5.11 @ 9:40AM

The same old problem; but the same old solutions won't work. I am so tired of the 'usual suspects' doing the same things and succeeding in scaring Republicans. Speaking in generalities (Which I 'generally' avoid!) democrats are 'generally' liars, thieves, and amoral thugs who have proven capable of doing ANYTHING to gain, and hold power. They can kill (Mary Jane Kopechne) rape (Bill Clinton) steal (Rep jefferson) and cheat (EVERY DEMOCRAT) and the media gives them a pass.

We should make life miserable for EVERY democrat, but even worse for EVERY piece of scum that hides behind the first amendment. Mike Adams has a great strategy when the administration at U.N.C (univ. of n. carolina) go after him for the crime of being a living conservative. He just spreads all the personal contact information he can find about them. The really appreciate the attention!

Just publish EVERY bit of personal information about the morons in the media, like: phone numbers, e-mail addresses, cell phone numbers, addresses, their kid's names and addresses and phone numbers, their relative's names and contact info. They might then be given to every telemarketer in the world. After all, there must be some items these people want...

These people have been a self proclaimed "America Destruction Mechanism" for long enough. There are all sorts of legal ways to annoy and pi$$ off these people while making their lives just a shadow of the living hell they drop onto American Conservatives who are just trying to save our Country. Give 'em HELL!

I'd appreciate your suggestions. Here are just a few to get started:

If they have lots of kids, buy them one cheap ticket to the circus and give it to one of their kids.

2. Since members of the media are generally sympathetic to the 'gay' community, they'd appreciate somebody adding them, and/or their spouse, to gay mailing lists. Or, even for their kids. after all, it's never too early to learn what's important to good little lefties...

3. How about calling those tv carpet salesmen, or the moveable bed people and give them their names. They could really use these fine products.

There are all sorts of creative ways to 'help' these people. Just don't do anything illegal. They'll appreciate the attention since that is, after all, what they want.

Redstateboy| 1.5.11 @ 9:54AM

Like one of Rush's intros state... "they use to get away with it - Rush"

With their monopoly broken.. the Libs are doomed - why do you think they're trying so hard to find a way to shut down talk Radio or FOX??
The "New Media" is the Light of Day to the Dracula's of the Left.

VBMax| 1.5.11 @ 10:04AM

We are at a huge disadvantage in certain ways: for example they get to lie and cheat with abandon and we have to play by the rules.
There is a vicious cycle going on and this is how it works, in general. The progressives in power implement destructive policies. The people, those aware enough to understand what is happening, replace the progressives through election. The problems that were engendered by the destroyers are now owned by those wanting to create solutions, but have become so big that they are virtually unsolvable without implementing drastic measures. The destroyers spend the entire time they are out of office sabotaging any attempts to fix things. The people, seeing no improvement, re-elect the destroyers again. Thus, we have a dwindling spiral and a failing nation. Our only advantage is in numbers. There are many more of us than there are of them. We must strongly support those who are trying to do the right thing. Remember they are under heavy pressure from us to do the right thing and being sabotaged relentlesly at the same time: the proverbial "between a rock and a hard place".

Anthony| 1.5.11 @ 10:16AM

The "corrupt bastards" of the MSM need to be flushed along with the Marxist Democrats, once and for all.
It's long past time to cease cooperation with these people in the name of "bi-partisanship", which is another word for giving up principle so that the leftist hegemony can go on unabated.
The war is on, the left will throw everything they've got at us, it's their Battle of the Bulge. We need to Man Up and stay resolute if America is to be saved from these Marxists.

The belly laugh must be contagious...for very different reasons.

Referring to Sarah Palin's reality show as a "travelogue" is absurd, even by your standards.

The show:
*Was Produced by a reality show veteran
*Follows a standard reality show format
*Uses a video camera to capture the Palin family engaging in "normal" activities for the express purpose of making them more "palatable" to future voters, oh, and, yea, to make 8 million dollars

It's a reality show, or an infomercial. Take your pick.

...on second thought, scratch infomercial. Entities normally have to PAY to have an infomercial aired.

Yes, she has cheapened herself.

I was rather amused in debating a leftist a few months ago when they came up with their standard knee jerk line: "You don't think for yourself! You only think what Foxnews tells you!" and then acted as if they had come up with a revelation: "Did you know that Republicans are funded with secret foreign money?"

Looking back, I should have said: "No. I didn't. If it's so secret, then how do you know about it? And where's your source other than the NYT?"

Another option is to escalate: Tell them that if this is such as serious issue, then go to the police and file charges. Then laugh them off.

The democrats are revealing that their agenda is now totally dead and is largely just a collection of dirty, cheap political tricks. What self-respecting person chooses to believe in such nonsense? I think that there are few true leftists, er, left. The dems major support now comes from recipients of the welfare and entitlements groups.

If you look at the top 100 individual political donors, there 52 that are Dem and 48 that are GOP. So, it's evenly divided. If Dems are always encouraging class warfare and blaming "the rich" for everything, in their simplistic juvenile demagogic way, then they are self haters. Many Dem liberals are USA haters, for sure. That's why they advocate policies that surrender USA competitive edge in the world, in trade, monetary and military policy. Journalists are mostly Dems and liberals, so they share these views. They make no pretense at being objective any more. Thus, the headline about a GOP Fundraiser. Shocking!

This is all nothing new. Just read Alice in Wonderland. The book - not the Disney version.

Being completely unconnected to the above monkier, I'll proclaim that the MSM's coverup of the bullexcrement into which the Democrats constantly deposit is akin to the daily brainwashing techniques of Pravda, etc. The one and only proper use of the NYT, Boston Globe, SF Cronicle, WaPo, etc is to place same in the rack alongside one's bathroom toilet and to grab a handful of after relieving oneself!!!!!!

Today, the "light of truth" is being shined on all who would take this country down. The Democrat Alinskyites no longer have just the "mainstream media" covering them. Now we get the truth from Fox and talk radio and conservative blogs.

Truth and freedom are our mantra.
Lies, deceit and "Rules for Radicals" are the Democrat mantra.

As for LeAnn Rimes, she is a beautiful and talented gal. The left can't stand it when we have celebrities that are conservative. The left has to demonise everything that is beautiful and conservative.

The media is filled with inaccuracies, sensationalism, propaganda, distortions, and lies. The "profession" of journalism is several notches below prostitution. Kill your television, cancel all newspapers and magazines.

It has always galled me how Teddy baby got off with for that poor girl's death. The blathering loud mouth chubby red faced blowhard was adored by the press. After all, what is a girl's life compared to a Kennedy lion? Jimmy the Greek was balckballed by a silly but not hateful comment on black football players. Stupid but more or less harmless comments are killing offenses, but actual killing or causing a death is nothing.

Point one: Republicans must be abandoned and replaced with conservatives.
Point two: When your liberal opponent is lying in the gutter bleeding, stomp on his head.

"accusations made by the Democratic National Committee that 'secret foreign money' was funding the GOP."

I'm waiting for them to start calling it "rootless cosmopolitan money". /sarc

Re God and Politics: the Chaplain of the Senate was for a while on CSpan frequently at some congressional do offering prayers for the Lord to Redistribute the Wealth. Maybe he meant well but it seemed like he was inferring that O and God think alike. And on the new curly lightbulbs: the things are going to be the end of what is left of AM radio. I can't get a thing on AM on my radio with all the squiggly bulbs put into my hootch. Is there a cable company angle in this to get us to have to buy special converters to hear some of the stations I have given up hearing?

Read the consititution often and let the Dem Socialists get annoyed all they want to. Let the MSM get annoyed all they want to. Just keep reading the constitution and show how it applies to passing legislation or not. Then show how the Dems are unconstitutional in their legislation and let the voters decide who is right. highlight the Socialists Dems antipathy to the constitition. And yest it is Liberty versus Marxist that s the choice and people should be aware what the constitition means to them.

Beyond that the regulations allow the manufacturing of lower watt bulbs until 2014. GE wanted to get rid of high cost American factories, the energy regulations gave them cover.
