The President of the United States took a shellacking the other
day, in his own words, so it is to be predicted that he might be
looking for someone weaker than him to bully. Historically, when
heads of government with tyrannical streaks confront the limits of
their power, they beat up a Jew to get their mojo back. Jews
thought that getting their own country would save them from this
sort of treatment; it has not worked out quite that way, but at
least they can grouse about it in cabinet meetings rather than in
squalid ghettos.
Obama was visiting Indonesia, full of good will for
another “new beginning” with the “Muslim world.” Apparently, saving
Muslims from Serbs and Saddam Hussein and Somali warlords worsened
our relationship with them. The program to use NASA to celebrate
great Islamic contributions to science has failed to launch. To
fire up the spirit of comity between West and East, Obama has
courageously
attacked those international menaces, the people of Israel, for
obstructing peace by building housing units in
Jerusalem.
Prime Minister Netanyahu fired back: “Jerusalem is not a
settlement. It is the capital of Israel.” Yet this new escalation
of American chastisement of Israel portrays the builders of new
apartments in Jerusalem as enemies of peace.
Who are these bellicose banes, these obstinate obstacles,
these improvident provocateurs? If you traveled to Israel and met
them, you might be very surprised.
THERE IS A SETTLER CLASS in Israel. They are frontiersmen
in the tradition of the Americans who tamed the Wild West. If you
trek out to their remote outposts, you find weather-beaten muscular
types fighting to carve lives for their families out of
inhospitable terrain. Trailers on mountainsides are the starting
point, and upward mobility does not aspire beyond prefabricated
structures which outdoorsy Americans might use for summer homes in
the Catskills or the Smokies.
These are some tough hombres. Some of them are religiously
inclined and speak of Biblical prophecies and divinely orchestrated
fate. Others are aggressively secularist types who credit their own
brawn and ingenuity for whatever they achieve. They have in common
an uncommon grit. They stand tall in the face of all the adversity
the earth and hostile populations can throw at them. But these are
not the folks buying apartments in the expanding urban
neighborhoods of Jerusalem.
The way these new apartments are developed relies heavily
on people who buy “on paper.” Say the plan is to put up 100 units.
The developer starts with limited capital and the banks help a
little, but there is not enough money there to make it work without
a presale of about 40 percent. Buying an unbuilt apartment entitles
you to a premium of about a third. So an apartment which will sell
for $120,000 when constructed can be purchased in advance for
$80,000. Naturally, the buyer with less cash is drawn to this
deal.
What this leads too typically is a building filled with
newlyweds. The two sets of parents chip in and the government helps
by subsidizing special mortgages. They sign on shortly after the
engagement and most often will be renting for a year or more before
their place is ready. These tend to be Yeshiva or college students,
entry-level working people, who fit your Manhattan straphanger
model; these are not the Paul Bunyans who are manning the
settlements.
They are ordinary Jews with — to borrow from Shakespeare
— eyes, hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions,
fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons. Suddenly their
starter pad around the corner from Mom who works in the
Municipality and Dad who drives a city bus has been designated a
militarized zone by Obama and Secretary of State
What’s-her-Name.
Maybe all of this will magically lead to a grand
rapprochement. Israel and the Arabs will dance the hora together
wearing burqas. White doves will fly overhead bearing olive
branches. The lion will lie down and the lamb won’t have to lam.
The swords will be beaten into plowshares. Yet the sensible person
must proceed sensibly until reality is officially called off in
favor of utopia. In sensible terms, this strategy looks to be
counterproductive. There cannot be peace between Israel and a new
country if the new country does not understand what is Israel and
what can reasonably become theirs.
The new version of the Merchant of Venice has Shellac in
the role of villain, as the world blames Jews for putting up walls.
Those who prefer to avoid another shellacking would be well advised
to direct their efforts more realistically, and more
fairly.

From the desk of President B. Hussein Obama:
To: Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu
Prime Minister Netanyahu,
Look, we have a real problem here. There is all kinds of trouble and turmoil coming out of your part of the world right now, and quite frankly I'm getting sick and tired of it. I'm tired of hearing about Iran, and everyone wanting Me to bomb them (not gonna do it; wouldn't be prudent at this juncture); worrying about the rising price of oil (which is actually a good thing, it'll help my plan to stop global warming); and Al Qaeda. Do you see a common thread here? Well, I do, so let Me point it out. It's you. Israel.
Look, before 1948 nobody ever had to worry about the Iranians getting a nuclear weapon, oil prices or Al Qaeda. But then you get your precious little piece of real estate over there, which you stole from the Palestinians just like the white folks stole this country from the Native Americans. And then you couldn't be happy with what you were given, you had to go and take more. Now, on top of everything else, you want to build more housing units for jews in East Jerusalem. What were you thinking?
Look, I've got the Saudis, the Iranians, the Turks, the Palestinians, the Jordanians, the Egyptians and everybody else yelling at me night and day about this. Of course I understand. Everybody knows if you let a bunch of jews move into a neighborhood it drives down the property values for everyone else who lives there. Next you'll have a bunch of freaks in yarmulkes walking around a chanting all them time, at least whenever they aren't out stealing babies' blood to make Matzos for passover. It's just crazy, and nobody wants you there. So I'm just going to have to tell you flat out to stop building in East Jerusalem. No more. Got it?
Now please don't think I'm some how singling you out for this. There are plenty of other folks I'm going to be giving the old cease and desist to as part of this notice. Why right over here in the united states I'm going to have Attorney General Eric Holder put a stop to any more non-Hispanic whites building in East Los Angeles. Everybody knows East L.A. is the homeland of our proud Mexican immigrant community. Letting more white people move in there is a complete insult to them. Those white people insist on speaking English, which is not the native language of East L.A., making all kinds of noise about immigration control, and try to foist their culture off on the native community. So we're going to have building freezes for jews in East Jerusalem and non-Hispanic whites in East Los Angeles.
While I'm at it, let me say a few words about Eastern Europe. Up until the last couple of decades those people enjoyed a Socialist Paradise under the direction of benevolent Soviet leadership. But along came that b-grade movie actor Reagan, who had to go and make a mess of everything. Well, it's past time to set it right. So from here on out, I will be working with President Putin to restore Eastern Europe to its rightful sphere of influence, as per My re-set agreement with the Russians. We will be putting an end to the pernicious influence of capitalism and christianity, and restoring Eastern Europe to the socialist paradise that is its rightful destiny.
On the same note, I will re-direct the united states' Eastern Asia policy in a similar vein. This belligerent country I'm trying to save has spent far too much time and money on places like Taiwan and South Korea. It's time to admit that the Koreas will be better off under one strong leader, and that Taiwan rightfully belongs to China. In so doing I will be able to avoid costly and needless wars and bloodshed, and put an end to the disgusting pattern of this country in throwing its weight around in parts of the world where it is not welcome.
So, in a nutshell, Prime Minister Netanyahu, you are to stop letting jews move into East Jerusalem, while I will keep the whites out of East L.A., the capitalists and christians out of East Europe, and american influence out of East Asia. Once we have followed through on this plan we can be assured of lasting peace in our time. After all, once we give the Muslims, Mexicans, Russians and Chinese what they want we can be assured that they will be appeased, leaving us in peace and tranquility. I assure you that your only other choice is war, and that I will NOT support you in that.
Sincerely,
united states President for Life B. Hussein Obama

The comparison made between Israel's establishment and Manifest Destiny (stealing from the Indians) is misleading: if anything, the establishment of Israel was legitimate. Insofar as stealing from the Indians, I'd like to see the deed to the properties taken (in other words, you keep what you can defend.)

There is someone out there whose reach has exceeded his grasp, and the farther he remains from our country, the happier we all will be. Fortunately the Israelis are used to ignoring bombast from weak Presidents and the man in charge in Israel doubly so. Zero should start thinking about what Abraham Lincoln said -- that it is not so important whether God is on our side as it is whether we are on Gods side.
And stay away from volcanoes when spewing. Him and them.
LMajito| 11.12.10 @ 7:42AM
An enemy of Jews is an enemy of the God of Abraham. And the curse is upon him/her. Any body who has taken the task of destroying the Jew has become null and void...of all of the empires of old, none have survived...but the moment the Jewish accepted the responsability for the Torah at the feet of Mt. Nebo after Moses made the offer, they became the enemies of the world. The world hates the Jew because it loves darkness and Jewish Torah and tradition condemns injustice and evil deeds.
On the Arab and Jew conflict, there is a sex act that has have dire consequences. Abraham should have never accepted the Hagar offer from Sarah. Now after all of these centuries, the desdendants of Abraham from both women are still at odds with each other (which family does not have two sons who fight constantly with each other?).
Let us not forget that the reason why Hagar was expulsed from Abraham's camp was Ismael constant haranguing and mocking of Israel. So today the story still goes on.
So sad that the so called great orator can't even convince a band of refugees to stop attacking and thus have peace.

Message from Netanyahu to Obama (from Jerusalem Post): "Jerusalem is not a settlement. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement on Tuesday, adding that the government had never agreed to place any restrictions on construction in Jerusalem, which has 800,000 residents.
The "peace process" is a bad joke. "Palestinian" means the same thing as "terrorist"; their goal is to wipe out Israel and kill Jews. Meanwhile Obama and H. Clinton are pledging $$ hundreds of millions in assistance to the "Palestinians", thereby providing funds to Hamas and various other enemies of the United States and Israel. If this is not aiding and abetting the enemy, what is? Congress should defund the traitors yesterday.

There are many Arabic/Persian folks who are quite well educated, and academically gifted. Two of the best Calculus professors I studied under more than 25 years ago, we Palistinian immigrants. Neither was very political (one was even anti-IRS!), but both were polite, and extremely good teachers.
Been under medical care lately. Yes, a lot of our younger medical professionals are Asian-Indian, but I have in the last few years been under the care of an Arabic Internist (who diagnosed a genetic blood defect) and Persian Urologist (who treated me for bladder cancer). I am thankful for all of these individuals. Now, if in their "secret" lives they are anti-American/Israeli terrorists, I say catch them, torture them, then put them in front of military tribunals. But, I don't really think any of them were/are.
The Muslim world may not have an organized, global class space, DNA research, transportation engineering, or other superb, massive scientific programs, but they have many who have achieved and contributed.
Heck, Dr. Farouk El-Baz was one of two leading geologists directing research for the Apollo missions and spoke openly of the Q'uran in the documentary "To The Moon." Last I heard, he wasn't strapping on bombs and heading for the Metro...

I've had the pleasure of getting to know a Jewish couple who live in a neighborhood (a so-called "settlement") that was Jewish as far back as the time of Jeremiah. From time to time, Arab kids across the way hurl rocks at them, especially when they're using their outdoor grill.
The couple tries to deal with the situation with humor. When one of the Arab kids raised what seemed to be a rifle over his head (one-handed, with the rifle horizontal), the husband silently returned the gesture -- with his long barbecue fork.
Humor doesn't always help: The neighborhood recently raised enough money to install a security fence that has motion sensors.

Overwhelming majority they want to remain in Israel rather than any Palestinian authority.. That says it all. There are Arabs in the Knesset (Deputy Speaker is an Arab); the Israeli Hospitals have many Arab Doctors, Nurses and patients. Churches and Mosques flourish in Israe. The World Bahai Center is in Israel. None of these things exist in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria. I'm Jewish, but I can't explain it to you. Neither could my Dad, if he were still alive. It IS baffling. And frustrating.
Occam's Tool| 11.12.10 @ 5:09PM
Let's see, why Jews vote for Democrats, by a Republican Jew:
Many of my people are "stiff-necked." They also believe that the Democratic Party is still the party of FDR and HST, rather than the Anti-American feast it has become. Many are also politically ignorant, like my mother, who, and I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP, asked me what the difference between the Tea Party and The Green Party was.
Many are also in academe, where the herd mentality is Liberal.
Finally, those who selct for good survival instincts (and thus, Conservatism) tend to go where they can fight for their people. That would be Israel. The USA, interestingly, is the safest place in all of history to be Jewish, and has greatly spoiled American Jews, myself included. Unlike many of my co-religionists, however, I realize my spoilage and am appreciative.
But, may I say again, with very few exceptions (Tim*, Pat Buchanan, SL Toddard, and Ron Paul come to mind), Conservatives and letter writers to TAS are the most philosemitic people I know, something I found out while attending Texas Christian. An appreciation of Western Culture invites appreciation of the Romans, the ancient Greeks, and the Jews. And of those three, the Jews are still punching culturally and scientifically well above their weight. My thanks to Oldefarte for a beautiful comment, incidentally. And to Margie, Victor, and Ken for just existing.

Ronald Reagan:
“The United States has thus far sought to play the role of mediator. We have avoided public comment on the key issues. We have always recognized and continue to recognize that only the voluntary agreement of those parties most directly involved in the conflict can provide an enduring solution. But it’s become evident to me that some clearer sense of America’s position on the key issues is necessary to encourage wider support for the peace process. . . . the immediate adoption of a settlement freeze by Israel, more than any other action, could create the confidence needed for wider participation in these talks. Further settlement activity is in no way necessary for the security of Israel.”

Hi Occam... Check into George Soros' background for more info on why some Jews are against their own. According to what I've seen/heard from Soros' mouth, his parents were Jewish, and his mother was VERY against aligning herself with Jews. It appears there may have been some fear of letting it be known they were Jewish... a very interesting man, Soros, who is working against everything America stands for.
Christopher Holland| 11.12.10 @ 5:14PM
The evidence is anecdotal, but my Jewish friends aren't nearly as enthusiastic about being Democrats as they were when Bush was the pinata to hit. They hated Bush, they would spit at the very mention of his name. They had doubts about Obama, but they went along with him, like a lot of people, just to get the taste of Bush out of their mouths. Now they have a bad case of buyer's remorse.
RCV| 11.13.10 @ 10:11AM
Unfortunately, the increased dangers to Israel 's security today grow directly from the destabilizing effects of President Bush's ill conceived decision to launch a war against Iraq. Iraq was a counterbalance to Iran in the region, but now it is a once and future ally of the Shiite alliance dominated by Iran, which also contols Hezbollah in Lebanon. The newly-empowered Iran threatens not only Israel but Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Often people forget the words of Democrats during those decision days in 03 to "finish" the war with Iraq.
The mistake of believing Saddam when he boasted about his WMD stockpiles, caused even the wimpy UN to write the resolution for regime change.
As sad and awful as it is, however, our troops (and forward deployed equipment) on Iran's doorstep make up a HUGE counter-balance in the equation.
Some military brass I know tell me that if Obama pulled them out of Iraq, he would have a "sit down strike" on his hands.
Today, we have a really formidable force in place in Iraq. In two days we could airlift the "combat troops" to join up with their equipment if Iran launched a ground war.
Have you finished "scenario one" for our immediate future? (Texas Said No!)

Knowing that many readers of the Spectator are unapologetic fans of H.L. Mencken, I'd like to suggest a reading selection. Toward the end of "Heathen Days" Mencken describes his visit to Palestine in the mid-1930s, and it is well-worth a trip to the library. His description of the lush Jewish settlements and their stark contrast to the primitive dwellings and agricultural methods of their Arab neighbors is still highly revealing. While the Jews used modern Ford tractors, fertilizers and irrigation systems, the Arabs trudged to their exhausted fields, carrying on their shoulders wooden plows - "the tools of Abraham". The Arabs responded to this disparity, then as now, not by learning new farming methods, but by shooting their Jewish neighbors, frequently in the back.
Mencken’s description of the problems the British faced in trying to control Palestine is also revealing. The Arab – Jewish conflicts were not unexpected, and their efforts to improve public hygiene predictably came to naught. However, it was the British Sergeant’s description of elderly Jews getting into fist fights over the seating arrangements at the Wailing Wall that tells us that peace won’t be coming to the Middle East anytime soon.

Once again you have composed, nay, it hath been revealed to thee (how's that?) a most brilliant article with a most terrifying point, ie: the inevitible need for the waning despot to define a target, most freuently The Jews. You progressed form that faciley comprehended premise to CAIRO II, Obama's horror delivered amid thunderous applause and "righ on Bro" to a Moslem audience in Indonesia...easy enough to follow, simple enough to understand, terrifying enough to dwell upon....so what do I read from this audience.blah blah blah blah..all but one letter addressing the motif of the ensemble..
I strongly suggest all of you avid penmen to re-read this jeremiad, try to digest iton second reading..and start all over again...no Hagars or ad hominems or slogans...hiow about some thought?

Jews have contributed to society in numerous ways/fields [medicine, arts, education, law, business, etc], while other population groups have been recipients of Jews' taxpayer-funded governmental benefits. For jews to be historically persecuted, harassed, attacked, etc is deplorable and inhumane!!!!!!!!!
John II| 11.12.10 @ 4:41PM
Professor Obama's chosen venue for lambasting Israel seems finally to have completed an image of the Professor that's been taking shape for some months now.
Consider: he's in a Muslim country amid a garish and pretentious billion-dollar tour that has served no proportionately useful foreign policy goal whatever--except insofar as it may be useful to America's friends and enemies alike to know for sure that the present chief executive of the United States is a self-important, half-educated, vulgar, lightweight poseur ludicrously out of his depth.
So the image flashes and shimmers and finally crystalizes: The Professor comes off as an overdressed inner-city pimp.
DRed| 11.12.10 @ 8:36PM
Billion dollar tour? Come John-you're much smarter than that. If you're going to be insulting another's intelligence or level of education, you shouldn't be doing so while making laughably incorrect statements of your own.
John II| 11.12.10 @ 10:26PM
You're right, DReddie. The cost has exceeded a billion dollars. I was just rounding it off.
DRed| 11.12.10 @ 10:34PM
He's been gone 10 days. You think it costs over 100 million dollars, per day, for Obama to travel? Are we talking American dollars? That's preposterously stupid-I can't believe you're trying to make that argument.
John II| 11.12.10 @ 11:42PM
Hi again, DReddie. Allow me a few preposterously stupid points.
1. I don't recall saying anything about 100 million dollars per day. I referred only to the cumulative cost of the silly junket--before, during, and as yet for some time thereafter. It takes a lot more than ten days, for example, to deploy a fleet of 34 warships for a 10-day security mission.
2. I wasn't making an argument of any sort. I was making a droll observation. For months now I've been struggling to find the right image to capture the essence, so to speak, of Professor Obama--something akin to the magnificent 1980 MacNelly image of a diminutive Jimmy Carter dangling from the bottom edge of an ornate picture frame without a picture. With this most recent burst of self-inflated asininity, the Professor himself finally vouchsafed the image I'd been reaching for. That's not an argument; that's an observation.
You must work to improve your reading skills, DReddie, lest you acquire a habit of misunderstanding.
And now back to "The Three Stooges" in "Half-Wit's Holiday" (1947).
DRed| 11.13.10 @ 12:53AM
John, I'll take your suggestion about my reading skills to heart. Perhaps you could help me with this piece:

What was it Will Rogers used to say you should do when you found yourself in a hole?
John II| 11.13.10 @ 12:33PM
Oh. Thanks for the correction, DReddie--and please feel free to savor my chagrin.
But I like the Indian News Service version better, of course, because it helped inspire the image for which I'd been struggling so manfully for so many months.
I also like the DoD's dismissive term "comical"--that too is so broadly applicable. I can imagine Rogers saying something like "Never trust an Indian newspaper," but I'm certain he said something about the ease of spotting a goat among sheep.
I stand particularly but not generally corrected, still smugly fond of my image, which fits the indisputably comical nature of the Professor's Asian junket. And now back to "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962), a great flick perhaps familiar to Indian journalists: "When the truth becomes legend, print the legend."
DRed| 11.13.10 @ 1:17PM
I'm more sad than anything, John. Those reports were so obviously ridiculous. I expected better from you.
As for your image, picturing our first black president as a ghetto pimp is hardly creative. I wouldn't be so smug about it.
John II| 11.13.10 @ 1:51PM
Well--what can I say? So much about this presidency has been so obviously ridiculous that I've just become inured to that which is obviously ridiculous. Yet I am more amused than sad. For the time being.

Palestine is now called Jordan. However, Jordan refuses to let the trouble makers from GAZA and the West Bank in the country. The US (Obama) and the Arab countries do NOT have the right to tell Israel what to do in their own country. The Muslim countries or the US would not like Israel telling them what to do in their countries. Obama needs to get a life or at least adjust his arrogant attitude towards Israel. If he was actually a christian and knew the bible, he would be afraid of the grief he is giving Israel.
DRed| 11.12.10 @ 10:28PM
We tell muslim countries what to do all the time. It's interesting that many of you aren't criticizing Obama for what he thinks Israel should do, but instead are criticizing just the mere fact that he disagrees with the Israeli government. But why is it that it's so unacceptable for an American president to have an opinion on what another country should do?
michiganruth| 11.12.10 @ 10:54PM
why? well, for one thing, he said during the election and during his apology tours that he was NOT going to "dictate" to other countries. remember? he was going to be different from that bad George Bush, who tried to tell people what to do.
oddly enough, that not-dictating thing didn't seem to include Israel, to which he dictates constantly.
Obama is also very selective about who and what he criticizes. when Palestinians shoot rockets into Sderot, or celebrate a terrorist by naming a public square after her, Obama says nothing. but when Israel says it's going to build some apartments in Jerusalem, ITS CAPITAL, Obama goes ballistic.
and Obama's condescending take on why the Israelis don't like him? it's his middle name, he suggests. yup, because in addition to everything else, Israelis--and Jews in general--are stupid.
DRed| 11.12.10 @ 11:18PM
Obama said he thought the construction in East Jerusalem wasn't helpful to the peace process. That's it. That's neither dictating nor going ballistic. Pretty mild stuff.
As for Obama thinking Jews in general are stupid, that's ridiculous. Ask Rahm Emmanuel, or David Axelrod, or Elena Kagan to start with.
michiganruth| 11.12.10 @ 11:32PM
I was referring to the Joe Biden trip last year, not the resumption of building now, after the freeze expired.
surely you remember that? the Obama administration DID indeed go ballistic, with Obama furious, Hillary on the phone berating Bibi, and the whole "I'm going to have dinner with Michelle and the kids--let me know if you want to talk" humiliation thing.
as for your other point, you must be one of those deluded goyim who thinks that if a person finds Jews useful in some way, he cannot therefore think poorly of Jews. uh, WRONG. just one example: Nixon and Kissinger. I'm sure you know that Nixon was forever making anti-Semitic cracks about Dr. K.
rrebell| 11.13.10 @ 9:03AM
Whether he is using some communist traitor type jews is inmaterial. He never makes "mild stuff" about anybody else (mohammedan, third world, non white, Iran, communist country, especially African). The mohammedan world main problem is the existance of a non-mohammedan country in the territory of past conquest of the mohammedan imperialism. Obama has use for the anti-Zionist Jews because they are the best help for him in his dark games against the United States against European-heritage people and for the mohammedan aims.

The Case for Profiling:
Let's follow Israel's example and get real. 99.9% of terrorist attacks worldwide over the past 4 decades have been perpetrated by followers of Islam. Airplanes, office buildings, schools, churches, trains, nightclubs, military posts. Gee whiz, I wonder if there is some way to use technology to profile using this data. How about a dedicated private Think Tank? TSA and other government employees will never solve it. In fact the TSA should be remodeled and turned over to private enterprise.
