It’s Head-Stomping Season
Kentucky mayhem highlights campaign’s fever pitch.
Lauren Valle wanted to create bad publicity for Rand Paul’s Senate campaign by having herself photographed next to the candidate while displaying a sign that mocked him as a tool of corporate interests.
Miss Valle’s stunt didn’t go off as planned, but the 23-year-old MoveOn.org activist certainly succeeded in her larger goal of creating bad publicity for the Kentucky Republican’s campaign. After she shoved her way through a crowd awaiting the candidate’s arrival for a debate at a TV studio Monday in Lexington, some of Paul’s supporters grabbed Miss Valle, pulled off the blonde wig she was wearing as a disguise and wrestled her to the ground. At least two TV news cameras recorded the most outrageous moment of the melee, when a man wearing a “Rand Paul for U.S. Senate” T-shirt stomped his foot on Miss Valle’s shoulder as she lay helpless on the pavement.
The trademark rapidity of news in the Internet Age took it from there. At 11:03 p.m., Atlantic Monthly senior editor Joshua Green posted an article headlined: “MoveOn Supporter Brutally Attacked by Rand Paul Supporter,” complete with a YouTube video from a Kentucky TV station. The video clip was, as Green said, “truly awful.”
Awful as it was, however, that footage didn’t tell the whole story. Yet no one online nowadays waits for the whole story before reaching their conclusions. “Rand Paul Supporter Stomps Head of Female,” said one “progressive” blogger. By midnight, a liberal blogger in Kentucky (who also happens to be a state employee) had pronounced the incident the work of GOP “Brownshirts.”
Overnight and into the next day, more bits and pieces were added to the story. By early Tuesday afternoon, a Paul supporter named Tim Profitt had been identified as the Lexington stomper. He admitted his involvement, apologized, and was banned from further participation in the Republican’s campaign. Rand Paul issued an official statement condemning Profitt’s action as “deplorable. And so much for the story, at least insofar as the Republican Senate campaign in Kentucky is officially concerned. Given that Paul seemed to hold a strong lead in the race over Democrat Jack Conway, it is unlikely that Monday’s unfortunate incident will prevent the GOP from holding on to the seat vacated by retiring Sen. Jim Bunning. However, the whole story of this incident has not yet been told, and this one seemingly minor event in Kentucky may yet prove far more significant than its influence on the outcome of one of more than 30 Senate races that will be decided Nov. 2.
For the past 18 months, ever since the Department of Homeland Security released an April 2009 report depicting Tea Party activists as the tip of a dangerous iceberg of right-wing extremism, Democrats and their media allies have been trying to depict opponents of President Obama’s policy agenda as crypto-fascists. And if conservatives can be permitted to speculate without being accused of succumbing to the Hofstadter “paranoid style,” Lauren Valle’s actions Monday in Lexington certainly seem… well, peculiar.
Miss Valle appears to be an itinerant all-purpose protester. Two years ago, while a student at Columbia University, she was the youngest of five Americans detained by Chinese officials after unfurling a “Free Tibet” banner at the Beijing Olympics. In May of this year, she was charged with felony trespassing in Louisiana when she and other Greenpeace activists illegally boarded a ship, unfurled a banner, and painted the ship with slogans, a protest evidently timed to coincide with an appearance in the area by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. (Their banner read: “Salazar Ban Arctic Drilling.”) Law enforcement officials said the Greenpeace group had been in the area for two weeks and “had been repeatedly warned not to hamper clean up operations and not to trespass.” A local news account of that incident noted that none of the Greenpeace activists was from Louisiana — four were from Washington, D.C., one was from New York, one was from California, and Miss Valle is from Massachusetts.
From Beijing to Louisiana, this Ivy League radical somehow ended up in Kentucky. On MSNBC Tuesday evening, Keith Olbermann told the story of the Lexington incident with the label “Thuggish Behavior,” interviewing Miss Valle. She explained that she had been hired two weeks earlier by MoveOn.org to appear in costume as an “executive” of a phony organization called RepubliCorp with the slogan, “We buy democracy, one race at a time.” MoveOn, a liberal organization that is non-partisan in name only, issued a “Bird-dogging Guide” instructing activists: “Research your Republican target’s schedule” and “Stage your RepubliCorp stunt and attract media attention.” In this mission, professional protester Lauren Valle was eminently successful. Olbermann overlooked the irony that, while MoveOn declared that its protests were intended to “expose the unprecedented flood of corporate cash to Republican campaign coffers,” Valle was paid to travel to Kentucky for her stunt, while her assailant Tim Profitt was an unpaid local volunteer. Indeed, Profitt had donated $1,900 to the Paul campaign, according to FEC records.
Profitt told the Associated Press that he and one of his friends had talked to police officers at the scene, trying to warn them that Valle “was getting ready to do something,” but the police answered, “That’s not our job.” When the Republican candidate arrived, Profitt and his friends tried to block Valle’s path to the candidate because they were “concerned about Rand’s safety,” Profitt told the AP. Meanwhile, Olbermann’s MSNBC colleagues Ed Schultz and Chris Matthews compared Profitt’s actions in Lexington to Nazi Germany. Olbermann, Schultz, and Matthews were, of course, paid with “corporate cash” to denounce Paul’s volunteer supporters as thugs and Nazis.
Nearly two years after the election of Hope and Change, Republicans now hope they are just six days way from yet more Change. Despite every effort by Democrats and their media friends, analysts are now predicting a GOP “blowout” victory on Election Day. Miss Valle herself perhaps best described the anticipation when she called Monday’s incident “an extreme example of the kinds of sentiments that people are feeling in many races across the country” and added: “I think that tension is incredibly high.”
No doubt about that, Miss Valle. And apologies in advance if next Tuesday feels like yet another kick in the head for Democrats.

Doesn't Miss Valle, actually work for a living? It seems not that this professional protester does anything meaningful. Apprentice Miss Valle, and those like her to receive funds to survive, but does Miss Valle benefactors remove withholding taxes from her political rabble rousing stipend?
If not then can we assume that Miss Valle is a private contractor of sorts and of course at the end of the year reports her all purpose protester wages?
But in all practicality Miss Valle classifies herself as a professional student therefore giving herself a pass on paying taxes, unlike the people she protests against, they don't have a choice in the matter do they?
Maybe the Internal Revenue Service needs to open up a probe of Moveon.org to see if they are withholding Miss Valle's and others like her taxes.
In this day and age of sacrifice it is everyones duty to pay their fair share in taxes including Miss Valle. Wasn't it Charles Rangle or Joe Biden that said, "It is every Americans patriotic duty to pay taxes."

Thank you. It was no stomp to the head at all, just a forceful push down on the shoulder with a foot. Was it necessary for the guy to do this? No. How many times did he aggressively push down on the woman's shoulder with his foot? Once. One other factor that makes it look worse than it is, is that the woman was laying with her shoulder and head on the street curb. That is why the push on the shoulder looked so brutal. If the guy stomps a few times, then yes, let's get upset. However, once again we see a common sense challenged conservative media freak out about one man's over-reaction, but not assault.

A rape victim is not responsible for what happens to them.
But when someone charges toward a candidate, they have an apprehension coming.
If you can’t see the difference, then you’re really not intellectually equipped to be involved in this discussion — it is too complex for you. If you can see the difference, then you are a liar.

Nobody has said people who present opposing views should be therfore subjected to assault. They have said that someone sprinting toward a candidate, trying to dodge those who are blocking that sprint, need to be stopped with whatever force is sufficient to do the job. The foot on the neck was excessive. The wrestling to the ground was not. The very first time I saw the video I was thinking that this didn’t look nearly as much like an attack as it looked like an arrest.
Lauren did not have this happen to her because of her views, but because of her potentially-threatening actions.

You need to watch the whole video, not just the 10 seconds shown on national lamestream media. The bitch took a "flop". When she tried to plow into Mr. Rand and an elderly gentleman tried to stop her, she bent over at the waist and went limp, FALLLING towards him. She actually took the old guy to the ground, landing on his legs, not the street. From there she lay in a fetal position with her head on the curb. Mr Profitt just tried to keep her down while elderly gentleman #1 was trying to get up and out from under her. She did this on purpose. Thank God the bitch didn't have a gun or knife on her, but of course NO ONE COULD HAVE KNOWN THAT.

As a retired 25 year veteran cop - that is completely wrong. Police are supposed to be proactive - not just reactive, although judging from the cops I see today you would never know that. Perhaps they are cowed by the lefties (and some on the right) who complain about anything they do or try to do to maintain order - I don't know for sure. In my day that woman would have been escorted to the rear of the location (one way or another) and questioned as to her reason for being there. (a short pause while the lefties scream about their RIGHTS). No - their rights do NOT include depriving others of THEIR rights to freely assemble and hear a candidate. Rushing the stage where a candidate speaks, intent on fomenting violence is not a "right" either. Get over it. Were I the chief of that department, those cops assigned to the event would have been in my office the following morning for a clarification exactly what their duties consist of.

Thanks Bruce. We were also trained to prevent a crime from happening. If someone appeared to be a potential problem, we would place ourselves between the target and the potential perpetrator if for nothing else just to get a better visual assessment any potential danger. If the police would have proactively addressed this situation in such a fashion it could have been defused before anyone got pushed or even stepped on.

In 1959, when I was a freshman in high school, we had a course called Modern Living. It was a study in cultural issues and political affaires. Since communism was a big issue in those days, one of the segments studied was how communists would manipulate a crowd at a political rally. Their strategy was to get the crowd to become unruly. Their tactic was to strategically place their goons in the crowd and from their different locations they would shout out slurs, wave signs or make jesters and threats. I might add that the labor unions have been known to do the same thing.

I cannot disagree with you except for one point. Do you or The Punisher think that physical violence, no matter how much you or others (or I, for that matter) think it is deserved will help in any way? I think it will muddy the waters unnecessarily and in ways which are ultimately more destructive. Take vote fraud, for example. I suspect this election will be among the most fraudulent in history; too many foxes guarding the hen house. I have absolutely not doubt the Harry Reid will try to steal the election and may well succeed. At that time there will be a hue and cry. Will pounding a few activists along the way improve the chances of getting this message aired? Will the Tea Party movement be advanced in the public eye, or might the opposite attend?
The Left has always played by their rules, breaking tradition and deals when it suits them. I agree that the gentlemen's agreements between the parties are over; actually they were over by the time of L.B.J. But I suspect, indeed hope, that this doesn't include emulating the storied Preston Brooks who beat Senator Charles Sumner on the floor of the Senate with his cane. That they must be defeated is a given. That will take beating them at their own game. Mr. Profitt has not helped one whit. Chest beating displays are best suited for Gorillas. Voter fraud doesn't have to exist on a massive scale. The theft is always in a close election. When someone wins 53-47 (Obama) there is no question. When someone wins by a few hundred votes (Bush, Coleman, Rossi) the fun begins.
Systemic election error is a normal consequence of human error. We protect the process by defining the rules before the race is run. In the case of Bush v. Gore, the result was statistically inconclusive from the perspective of the popular vote. All the more reason that the rules be clear and enforced.
Purge the rolls.
Watch the polls.
Especially in this election where I suspect from surprising results.

For example, I personally witnessed three beefy sheriff’s deputies in Detroit’s Metro Airport pounce on a 90 pound woman who had a little too much to drink and was very irate over her seat being given away by those smiling airline personnel. First, the deputies, all desperately in need of the Adkin’s Diet or Jenny Craig, determined the woman was definitely not a Muslim cleric so they were now free to subdue her without worrying about being investigated by the DOJ and then two of them bent her over the counter while the third tried to determine how these new fangled plastic restraints worked – but eventually, after some show and tell, they managed to cuff her and lead her off for intensive questioning concerning her terrorist activities.

While this is a good political ploy and a succesful operation for the hippy and moveon. I'm certain 100% this is what they wanted and expected. The difference now is people are aware of the tactics moveon and other radical left groups are using and aren't going to take it anymore. Conservatives and right thinking people have been beaten, kicked, physically assaulted, threatened, impugned, verbally assaulted, lied about and had the most awful things said about them for decades. We aren't playing that game anymore. We are going to defend ourselves from the dangerous radicals infesting the democrat machine.
The heat of the situation, and it was a combat situation, may have seemed rough. This woman was treated appropriately given the situation. If she were to do that to an elected official with secret service protection, she would have been beaten down until she no longer posed a threat.

Based on her demonstrated history, Lauren Valle is a paid professional agitator. She gets paid to cause trouble - trouble sufficiently threatening or sufficiently obstructive to evoke a negative reaction in her target. She went to a political rally in the midst of a heated election and engaged in a variety of behaviors which screamed to ANYONE concerned with security that she was a threat. She knew EXACTLY what she was doing. She knew her behavior would be perceived in a threatening manner, and intended it to be perceived in a threatening manner. She was looking to provoke a violent reaction and got a watered down version of what she was hoping to get.
The reality is that she was treated a hell of a lot more gently than she should have been. Had she been wired with a bomb - and folks - like it or not such behavior is coming to a town near you - she could still have detonated it.
I have no sympathy for the likes of her. None. If you want to show up at a political event and protest the speaker, fine. That's your right as an American. Go ahead and do it. But showing up with the intention of evoking a violent reaction? No. You do NOT have the right to do that.
The reaction of Rand Paul's people was actually quite timid - too timid to deal with a real threat. I hope his security's a lot more efficient next time.
