Every now and then, our monolithic, woefully over-priced
universities do something right. A case in point is the news that
University of Illinois trustees have denied emeritus status to a
tenured faculty member: Bill Ayers.
Gee, with everything in his record, how did Ayers finally
outrage university liberals? Well, it wasn’t his past as a fugitive
fleeing the law, when he assumed aliases taken from names of dead
babies in cemeteries in towns where he hid. It wasn’t even his more
recent statements about harboring “no regrets” over bombing the
Pentagon or police stations; after all, many aging tenured
radicals, like Ayers in the 1960s, once referred to the military
and police as “fascists” and “pigs.” No, what did it was Ayers’
dedication of his 1974 book, Prairie Fire, to no less than
Sirhan Sirhan, assassin of Robert F. Kennedy.
The catalyst, of course, had to be something offensive to
liberals, but we’ll take it.
It turns out that one of the university’s trustees is
Christopher Kennedy, son of RFK. Kennedy implored the university
community to “understand my motives and reasoning,” noting, “How
could I do anything else?” Indeed.
Kennedy shouldn’t expect much level-headedness in return.
This is, after all, the university community. One Ayers colleague
told the Chicago Tribune she was “shocked” by the
decision. And, naturally, the dean at the School of Education that
hosted Ayers since 1987 protested that Ayers has been a “very good
colleague” whose “good far outweighs any negative
press.”
Of course, the decision by the trustees was a no-brainer,
but in our horribly un-diverse universities — ideologically
dominated by the left — the real shock is that a just,
sensible decision has been made.
The fuller history here is worth revisiting. Let me
backtrack a bit.
Published as the “political statement of the Weather
Underground,” Prairie Fire was signed by four Weather
Underground members: Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Jeff Jones, and
Celia Sojourn. Its contents are as alarming as its
dedication.
“We are a guerrilla organization,” explained the authors,
more than one of whom teaches in our universities. “We are
communist women and men, underground in the United States.” This
junior communist manifesto endeavored: “We need a revolutionary
communist party in order to lead the struggle, give coherence and
direction to the fight, seize power and build the new society…. The
only possibilities are victory or death.” “Our intention,” wrote
the revolutionaries, was “to disrupt the empire” of “U.S.
imperialism,” “to incapacitate it.”
Citing “THE BANNER OF CHE,” the manifesto pledged that,
“The only path to the final defeat of imperialism and the building
of socialism is revolutionary war.” That “war,” the authors
promised, “will be complicated and protracted. It includes mass
struggle and clandestine struggle, peaceful and violent…. Without
armed struggle there can be no victory.”
Che Guevara was the poster boy for Prairie Fire,
as full pages inside the book featured loving illustrations of the
god-like communist revolutionary. “In our own hemisphere,” wrote
the four authors, “Che Guevara urged that we ‘create two, three,
many Vietnams,’ to destroy U.S. imperialism… and opening another
front within the US itself.”
One might think that the advocacy of such things might
have gotten Bill Ayers rejected from admission into Columbia
University’s Teachers College only a few years later. It might have
hindered his hiring by the University of Illinois’s Department of
Education in the first place. Both are bellwethers of the wretched
state of America’s schools of education.
And it likewise — one would hope — might have kept a
young politician named Barack Obama from seeking Ayers’ political
endorsement.
Alas, it did none of those things.
The latter example, on Obama, is worth revisiting here,
for several reasons reinforced in this latest Ayers episode: The
articles in the mainstream media reporting on the trustees decision
either downplayed or misrepresented Ayers’ association with Obama.
The
Chicago Tribune reported only that Ayers and
Obama “worked on a school-reform initiative together.”
MSNBC mumbled that Ayers “once served” with Obama on “a
Chicago charity’s board.” Clearly, liberal journalists are still
protecting Obama here, forcing the rest of us to do their jobs. In
fact, the Ayers-Obama relationship was not insignificant. This
certainly matters, as Obama was elected leader of the free world by
oblivious Americans voting for “change.”

From the desk of President B. Hussein Obama:
Dear Bill,
I was very disturbed to learn of your recent difficulty with the University of Illinois, and wish to assure you that Eric Holder will be looking into the matter with all due alacrity. I believe it might behoove us to have Tim Geithner's people in the IRS looking into the matter as well; nothing sends a message like an audit.
After reflecting on our conversation the other day, I have a couple of pieces of advice to offer regarding your current problems. First of all, please remember that this is NOT 1974. Certain solutions you have mentioned to this problem would NOT go over well at the present time. While your outrage is justified, expressing it in this manner would be a real problem for my November plans.
As to my second point: It will, of course, soon be November. And of course October comes just before November. And of course there are always "surprises" this time of year. Just be sure the surprise is directed at an appropriate target. A target that will generate sympathy for those of us slaving away in government service, not some tea-bagger nutbags. We can take care of them AFTER November. Rezko gave me a couple of numbers to call, you know, so things WILL get handled.
In the meantime, keep your eyes on the prize. This is just a little setback. You've had them before. Maybe you could suggest that it's really a problem with Islamaphobia. After all, wasn't Sirhan a Palestinian? Start shouting that and racism loud enough, and the university will probably reverse itself in no time.
Finally, about that OTHER thing. As we've discussed, the vote may not go our way in November. Fortunately, your wonderful Prairie Fire Companion (got one right here where that stupid bust of Churchill used to be) has some great recommendations for that sort of problem. I've already been talking them over with certain people. And like our good friend in Turkey pointed out, you can always get off the train once democracy has gotten you to where you're going. So don't let them get you down over this. Just make sure you get all their names.
Your Friend and Admirer,
President B. Hussein Obama

Ken - I have been referring to the usurper as a Marxist rather than a Socialist since shortly after the election. Why it has taken so many people so long to agree with (us) is a mystery. Some still refer to his as a socialist!
Thom| 9.28.10 @ 7:17PM
Ken/Bruce, I use the term Marxist also so as to not get into “academic” arguments with “academic” useful idiots about the 31 flavors of Marx’s Socialist model/steps for humanity. Most people come away from the shallow knowledge of what is called “socialism” today thinking it is Communism Lite rather than just a rest shop onto Communism. No one has ever made it to Communism in practice nor can humanity be made into the model insect society of 99% drones and 1% King and Queens. Even those that call themselves Communists are often more fascist in practice but the 3% typically at the top of the power pyramid will keep trying to shove the Borg experiment on us until either we “submit” our we destroy them. I don’t see a sustainable middle ground and we are standing on the middle ground now.
Jeremiah| 9.28.10 @ 7:42AM
One minor quibble, Mr. Kengor. Please quit calling the establishment media the mainstream media. Quite obviously they are way out of the mainstream of American values.
They romantically imagine themselves as daring rebels storming the barricades, not understanding they have become the barricades - and we, the people, are doing the storming.

Not to worry DR, when we retake control of America, starting in November, Ayers, Dorne, and the rest of the cushy, sclerotic, bourgeois wannabe radicals of the '60s had best brush up on their "underground guerrilla tactics" and go into hiding.
If I were Ayers, I'd be learning Spanish about now, or the Canadian version of French.
davelnaf| 9.28.10 @ 12:38PM
People like Ayers expect the police that he despises to protect him and ordinary Americans that he despises to behave decently. But he and people like him reserve to themselves the right to kill and maim indiscriminately these same people. Don’t you understand that?
Anthony| 9.28.10 @ 2:13PM
I seem to recall an incident, fairly recently, where this fearless and brave radical whimpered for police protection when things got a little dicey.
Maybe it was a reporter from FOX that got Ayers all agitated.
Be that as it may, yes, this fraud demands protection from the same "pigs" he and his Che loving radicals once despised, and perhaps still do.
Hopefully, when he does call the cops next time, an "unfortunate incident" or "accidential discharge" might occur and the fearless radical will have lived his dream of confrontation with the "man".
Then, they can pick up his worthless carcass and dump it in the Chicago River.

Jeremiah| 9.28.10 @ 1:01PM
I was with my son-in-law at a sports bar watching a football game and called him 'my boy' a few times. Some women finally decided to lecture me on what a racist I was and him about not taking that sort of thing. God bless him....he looked at them with contempt and said, "That's my father-in-law. And how many black people are YOU related to?" They scurried away.
Last summer I was at a park playing with the grandkids. They were playing that they were monkeys on the jungle gym equipment, something many of us who have ever went to the zoo played at when we were kids. I was complimenting them on what great monkeys they were. Again, a woman decided to correct me on the error of my racist ways. She should have known better...they were obviously with me. "They're my grandkids, idiot," I explained to her. My grandaughter asked me, "Poppy, why was that lady mad at you?"
You know, vtwin, I have not yet had a black person or conservative white person misinterpret any of the affectionate playfulness with the black folks in my family. Only white liberals. And you know what else? A lot of the black folks I'm related to have noticed that, too. Your loss is even deeper than you know. Even your intended victims have started figuring out your 'sensitivity' for what it is: condescending racism that can never treat black folks as anything but 'other.' My family and I laugh at you.
(My son-in-law and I were once in a heated argument early on. At one point, he stuck his lip out, pouted and asked, "Is it because I'm black?" I shot right back, "No, it's because you're an ass." He paused a moment, then roared with laughter adn said he should have known better than to try to play the race card with me. We both laughed and so ended the argument. You know what's better than sensitivity? Family ties and natural affection with all the occasional squabbling it brings.)

Since you're free to post on this board, please provide explict and specific details of exactly how George Bush made:
1. "...the greatest foreign policy plunder in American history..." (Note: Hey Einstein...didn't you mean "blunder"?)
2. Exactly how the recession was "Bush's fault".
3. Explain the "Community Reinvestment Act" of 1978 (signed into law by Jimmy carter, Democrat)
4. Explain Andrew Cuomo's tenure as HUD Secretary during Clinton's Presidency, and Cuomo's view of the "Community Reinvestment Act".
5. Explain how MASSIVE "stimulus" spending by Obama (which has quadrupled our national debt) was designed to help the economy, and what it's done so far.
6. Explain the relationship between taxation and economic vitality.
A failure to respond will be viewed by us Conservatives as a tacit admission that you're a drone who doesn't have a CLUE what he's talking about.

Jeremiah| 9.28.10 @ 12:40PM
Oh no, Steve A, there would be a difference. If Bush were still president we would be fighting those wars to win, despite the howls of the establishment media and the left, rather than as a show to mollify.
This has real consequences. My son, who graduated a police academy just over a week ago and is now an officer, was in the military and left when his hitch was up early this year. It was not what he originally intended -and he was not alone.
He told me when it was time to decide, "Dad, before I knew I could get killed, but it was in a cause worth fighting and one that I believed in. Now they will not let us win and we can't even fight back most of the time. It is just a meatgrinder where the politicians are sending us to get killed for no reason and without hope of a victory that would make life better for the people there."
My son won the outstanding cadet award, top marksman, tops academically, and was elected head of his class by his fellow troopers. I say this with pride, of course, but more to note who the military under Obama is losing - and who he considers expendable to prop up his political needs but not to allow to win a fight they can win. If George Bush were still president, that fine young man would still be serving us all. He - and everyone of his friends who can, are getting out as quick as they can before they get their heads shot off to prove how tolerant Obama is of Jihad.

Bozo surrounds himself with avowed communists and you want us to believe he is not one himself? And as for the worst economic collapse, again this was CAUSED by government. The Bush-Clinton-Bush-Obama team have ruined this economy with massive taxes, massive goernment, reckless spending, and utter stupidity. Bush was a crummy president. That in and of itself does not make Obama good one. Find a new argument. Get a life! Try learning something useful.
lonestar| 9.28.10 @ 6:35PM
58% of the Democratic Senators vote for the war in Iraq. I guess that dumb ol' Bush tricked them.
George Bush, in his own words, was a compassionate conservative, not a conservative. He believed in a policy of don't tax and spend and was supported by a majority of Democrats in every economic stimulus plan he proposed. Democrats supported his 10 billion dollar Aides to Africa, No Child Left Behind Act, Medicare Prescriptions. Democrats refused to pass his bill in which he tried to reform the liberal policies of FANNY MAE and FREDDY MAC. Which is the reason for the economic collapse we are in. Bush never implemented conservatism because he spent money he didn't have.

I did a careful review of Ayers and Obama's role in the Chicago Annenberg Challenge a few months before the 2008 election.
It is interesting to note that the Challenge promised to improve education, and then poured $150 million into organizations including Trinity United (Rev. Wright's church), Peace Schools and the South Shore African Village Collaboration.
Curiously, the Chicago Algebra Project was turned down.
The surprisingly frank final report indicated that all this made little to no difference in the overall performance of the schools receiving the money. Quite understandable really, since the names of those organizations indicate that their true goals were not educational.
The organization of the Challenge was designed so that the Board approved proposals but a shadowy organization called the Collaborative created them. Obama was Chairman of the Board. Ayers ran the Collaborative. This organization meant Obama and the Board were essentially meant to rubber-stamp the Collaborative and the whole system was really run by Ayers. The fact that Obama accepted such a position indicates his true relationship with Ayers.
It was fascinating research and based on it I came to the definite conclusion that Obama was not fit for the Presidency. It doesn't much matter to me that Ayers was a bomber in the distant past, but Obama's role in Ayers' organization says a great deal about both men, none of it good.

Bush did not lie. Get over it. Unless you are ready to admit that Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Madeleine Albright, and a host of other DEMOCRATS lied as well when they said exactly the same things Bush said, and they said it all BEFORE Bush was elected. Are you ready to make such an admission?

Much has been made over this so called act of principle and bravery by the Trustees of the University of Ill. and Christopher Kennedy.
Neither the Board of Trustees nor Christopher Kennedy deserve any acolades. Had Sirhan Sirhan killed anyone else other than a Kennedy, and more particularly, a Republican president, Bill Ayers would have received his award with fawning gratitude and a standing ovation by Kennedy and the Board of Trustees.

Of course they denied him. He is a liberal and he is associated by inference though not reality, with Obama. We at the UI do not allow liberals to be honored. Although we welcome their input at plebeian levels such as the classroom, only true red-blooded American nationalists, millionaires or billionaires, failed Republican governors, corporate leaders and apologists, and fascists deserve emeritus status. That is where UIC draws the line.

If this country had any semblance of justice, like it did a hundred years ago, Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Jeff Jones, and Celia Sojourn would have been tried, convicted, and hung for treason and levying war agianst the U.S. of A.
The fact that someone who palled around with terrorists could be elected in this country, shows that America is in terrible shape.

I was well aware of this before 11/4/08, but sadly I was in the minority since he was elected president. As the sold saying goes, BETTER LATE THAN NEVER, as his radical connections are now slowely coming to light. Americans in their stupidity elected this man to the most important job in the world, and amazingly now are astonished at what he has done in several short years. Once again, folks, you simply need to communicate with everyone you know or have contact with, and explain the 11/2/10 is probably the last chance to save this country from complete destruction. The choice is yours, and the means to stopping same is through/at your respective polling/voting stations throughout the country!!!!

...and I mean this with all sincerity. When did we lose our collective sense of justice and retribution? As someone who was born in 1969, and, alas, too late to act as judge over the actions of these seditious hippies in the 60's, when exactly did this country misplace the moral compass? Why do Bill, Bernardine, and that treasonous b*** Jane Fonda still walk in Freedom? When did we surrender our collective nutsack? And please tell me it is not too late to retrieve it. Sheesh.

Read parts of this intellectual vomit and wondered if this dirt bag can quite wrap his twisted brain around the fact that while declaring himself an enemy of "imperialism" he promotes a hideous fascistic totalitarian/authoritarian political philosophy that seeks to TRAMPLE and RULE ALL. While protesting the "war" he was plotting to kill and maim in the interests of brotherhood and "peace". His is the face of an ancient reptile with all its inhumanity and evil on display; it's a pity he was not called out years ago and subjected to a roar of public condemnation. Instead he burrowed into the DNA of the educational establishment and used his relative obscurity to devour from within. I despise this POS and I hope he suffers mightily in his soon to be declining years.
Anthony| 9.28.10 @ 7:37PM
Well said, very well said. I was kinda hoping that the fearless revolutionary Dr. Ayers would have joined us on line and taken us on. However, this coward is not capable of direct confrontation, unless he has a mob in front of him.
No, this worm once did his damage at night with hidden bombs. Now he hides in academia, pretending to be the voice of intellectual reason and discourse.
I suspect this worm has read this site several times today. I hope you sleep well tonight thinking of us, knowing that we are thinking of you and your sick ilk.
You and your '60s radicals once thought Canada was the promised land, well Bill, this time it won't be the draft that will send you lame excuses for humanity to Canada, it will be us.
ExPat| 9.29.10 @ 6:17AM
Of course he knows full well what he is saying. It's typical leftist doublespeak, or "newspeak" as Orwell termed it. The unfortunate thing is that this mindset has permeated our academic community and infects the minds of our young people each day. Actually, I would not encourage any high school student to attend college and major in any of the "liberal arts". Unfortunately many of the professional disciplines, like science and law, are becoming politically tainted as well.
Thom| 9.28.10 @ 7:34PM
I looked up "emeritus" and displaying my ignorance here, how does his hurt him? In academic terms does this mean he doesn't get a Marxist merit badge but otherwise keeps on doing what he was doing all along?
Nate| 9.28.10 @ 10:09PM
When they made Milton Friedman -- you've heard of him? -- professor emeritus, was that a Marxist merit badge too?
Thom| 9.29.10 @ 4:03AM
Milton Friedman was never a Marxist thus if Professor Emeritus conveys some sort of benefit to our domestic terrorist here then we are rewarding a Marxist since Bill Ayers is a Marxist by his own words.

Nate,
Please get your facts straight. Ayers is with the University of Illinois - Chicago. Friedman was at the University of Chicago.

The most obvious sign of the fall of the Dem. party was earlier today when my uncle ( a Roosevelt Dem. hard line) stopped by to 'chat'. It wasn't long before the convo turned to politics.
My uncle, a 60 year Dem. was sitting there BLASTING his party. I almost fell off my chair! He is soooo angry with where his party has gone in just the last 10-15 years that he said he was switching this November.

Ayers has been a "very good colleague" whose "good far outweighs any negative press." Academics are the most pusillanimous people. It's not the "negative "press we are concerned with. At least one Kennedy is sensible.
Quoth Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on September 15, 2008 on the Huffington Post in criticism of Governor Sarah Palin, then running for VPOTUS:
"Fascist writer Westbrook Pegler, an avowed racist who Sarah Palin approvingly quoted in her acceptance speech for the moral superiority of small town values, expressed his fervent hope about my father, Robert F. Kennedy, as he contemplated his own run for the presidency in 1965, that “some white patriot of the Southern tier will spatter his spoonful of brains in public premises before the snow flies.”

Yet the same Robert F Kennedy, to my knowledge, hasn't said boo about Bill Ayers' dedication of his book "Prairie Fire" to Sirhan Sirhan (and has publically called Sirhan a hero) .... the man who actually shot and killed his father! ... and hasn't said anything about Barrack Obama whose political career which was launched by the same Bill Ayers.
