Neocolonial Dreams from Obama’s Mother

The patronizing white liberalism of his Ford Foundation-anthropologist mom influenced him too.

Newt Gingrich said to National Review Online recently, “What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anticolonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [his actions]?” Gingrich’s comment sparked off Dinesh D’Souza’s Forbes article, which argues that America is “governed by the ghost” of Obama’s “Luo tribesman” father.

But let’s not forget the white-liberal neocolonialism of his mother, which influenced him too. In Dreams from My Father, Obama reveals just as many or more dreams from his mother, the Ford Foundation anthropologist who introduced enlightened liberal ideology to the native tribes of Indonesia. There in that “land” of “fatalism,” Obama writes, “she was a lonely witness for secular humanism, a soldier for New Deal, Peace Corps, position-paper liberalism.”

The patronizing tone that Obama adopts in the book when discussing his father’s failures makes him sound more like a neocolonialist cut from his mother’s cloth than an anticolonialist. While he approves of the anticolonials’ anti-western anger, he still thinks they could use some direction from western liberals. He expresses disappointment with his father for not swallowing the liberal faith whole. His father lacked “faith in people” and held too tightly to certain Luo ways — “too much of its rigidness, its suspicions, its male cruelties.” If only, he implies, the African anticolonials were less stubborn and let neocolonialists at the Ford Foundation guide them to Planned Parenthood clinics and schools bankrolled by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, all would have been well.

It is an open question how much of the book is real or made up. Obama casually drops into the introduction that quotes in the book are “an approximation of what was actually said or relayed to me,” and that for “the sake of compression, some of the characters that appear are composites of people I’ve known, and some events appear out of precise chronology.” One wonders if he too is a composite in his postmodern memoir. The book is long on affected literary flourish and short on candor. He does a lot of “listening to the wind and its whispers of mortality.”

But here and there amidst the pretentious throat-clearing he makes some accidental revelations. I didn’t know that his Kenyan grandfather converted from Christianity to Islam, which comes out in a story told to Obama by his grandmother, a story that doesn’t exactly lend credence to Obama’s Islam-is-a-religion-of-peace line: “What your grandfather respected was strength…This is also why he rejected the Christian religion, I think. For a brief time, he converted, and even changed his name to Johnson. But he could not understand such ideas as mercy towards your enemies, or that this man Jesus could wash away a man’s sins. To your grandfather, this was foolish sentiment, something to comfort women. And so he converted to Islam — he thought its practices conformed more closely to his beliefs.”

Obama writes about his trip to Kenya with the anthropological detachment of his mother, not so much learning from his relatives during the “emotional odyssey” as looking down on them. But he is happy when his sozzled half-brother Roy turns up at his Jeremiah Wright-presided-over wedding as a convert to Islam. “The person who made me proudest of all,” he writes of the reception, “was Roy.” He had decided to “reassert his African heritage,” “converted to Islam,” and “sworn off pork and tobacco and alcohol.” His “conversion has given him solid ground to stand on, a pride in his place in the world.”

But Obama can’t resist a final moment of looking down on him. “Not that the changes in him are without tension… The words he speaks are not fully his own, and in his transition he can sometimes sound stilted and dogmatic,” he writes.

The implication left from all the self-important ruminations about “his divided inheritance” is that the anticolonial dreams of his father can only be completed through the neocolonial dreams of his mother.

Just like you should give up on the idea of getting an education and seeking your millions to serve the "community" in whatever capacity Mr. & Mrs. Obama bless (Of course as she works at her $330K no-show job at the "community" hospital or from his state job as, well, professor, senator, community agitator or any number of parasite endeavors he chased.)

Just like Obama thinks being part of a terrorist, racist organization is bad - like the TEA Party. But if your a Lefty scum it's okay to be friends with - and soul brother to - Bill Ayers, an actual terrorist. Or The New Black Panther Party thugs, who intimidate voters with racist remarks while standing around a with billy clubs - nothing to see here, move along! That's perfectly normal.

Gee, where are the Republicans like Carl Rove enumerating these character flaws? Too busy looking for their balls, I guess.

If your point is that too much power has accumulated in the hands of too few to the detriment of the rest of us I agree. McCain was foisted on an unsuspecting public as just another member of the ruling class. Dem. or Rep. they both run in the same cocktail circles. There is no alternative to a ruling class, to think otherwise is marxist or libertopian. My judgment call is Obama is the better choice for 2012 than whatever compromise candidate is nominated at the GOP convention (less than 2 years from now).
The GOP is lying when it even hints it can give us another Reagan: the Cold War is over and thus GOP unity is over-- such has been amply demonstrated in the last 21 years.

BTW alan in case you didn't hear the individual States are revamping their vetting process so that if barry can't prove his eligibility BEFORE he gets on the ballet his name will be vacant. that means the documents and process it takes to get into the Miitary and to aquire a top secret clearance are the same documents and process he will be exposed to. he will have to explain the conflicting SSN's, his passport discrepancy, his lack of a long form BC and all of his time must be accountable for along the lines of the last 10 years or perhaps more. his "friends" and family will be put under a microscope and probed not by one state but by several if the laws are passed and i see no reason why they won't pass! your boy barry's number is coming up and soon...

Bob Dole wasn't even good enough to be vice president, yet they ran him on top of the ticket-- pushing the vastly better Jack Kemp (who didn't have a racist bone in his body) to the bottom of the ticket.

From 1989 Bush 41 had the opportunity to build on Reagan's success in helping the people of Eastern Europe dissolve the Soviet Empire; but Bush dithered for four years. Since then one wasted opportunity after another.
The GOP keeps saying trust us, we'll do better next time, but they never do-- one hack after another in '88, '92, '96, 2000, 2008. And now, like suckers at Vegas, we are expected to trust them yet again, when no reason to trust the GOP exists; neither will they accept any interest in a third party-- a genuinely conservative party that sincerely attempts to conserve something, rather than elect candidates who d just enough to allow them to write their memoirs, and keep a detestable Karl Rove in business. What concerns me most is the violent over-reaction to Obama; every time you say we are not racists, you are less convincing than the time before:

I didn't vote for Obama in '08, because I didn't know enough about him; it takes two years IMO and there wasn't enough time before the election to ascertain what Obama's character is like. I didn't vote for Clinton ever because there were too many credible rumors about him, however Obama's personal morality is higher than Clinton's-- so there is no reason IMO not to vote for him.
The violent reaction of the GOP has decided me in favor of voting Democratic; hopefully enough pressure will be brought to bear on the GOP so they will put up or shut up (as Reagan said) in 2016.

History can be the most damning thing to understand. It confuses, it leads to false statements, it is often read in startling error. And that is for those who either by design or ignorance, do not understand history. For a Party lacking unity over, you say, the last 21 years, that disjointed Party took back The House in 1994, the first time that had happened in 40 years. They yielded back in 2006. And as of this moment in time, odds are that a tsunami will sweep Republicans back into The House and they have a legitimate shot at The Senate. It takes some degree of unity to pull that off. But it takes a misreading of history to not know it.
By the way, if you have taken the time to read The Communist Manifesto, you would realize that Mr. Obama's phrasing/scolding/lecturing/Government knows best demeanor would fit rather cozy-like into that document. If you think Obama-Pelosi-Reid do not represent, perhaps by default, Marxism in motion and ideology, then you're not remotely qualified to weigh in on matters of history. By the way, you did prove just that. Listen to what is said, how it is said, how that trio sees The People, how they often dismiss The People with suggestions of not knowing their own plight *again, that language would cozy well into The Communist Manifesto* and then continue a determination that they are not a ruling class, which can indeed be Marxist/Socialist, then you are equally inept in the area of politics and the history of politics.

Nope - Frankly Obama could have been born on the Capital Steps and the event entered into the Congressional record. His farther was a Kenyan Citizen and British Subject and the U.S. State Department has stated Obama had dual citizenship at birth - which by definition is not a Natural Born Citizen as required by Art 2 Sect 1 of the U.S. Constitution. Infusing cash into a credit-starved economy forestalled a second depression. It was a wise economic move, supported by both Republicans and Democrats and virtually all the capitalist economists who didn't live in dream worlds. As for regulatory oversight of business, we have had that at least since Teddy Roosevelt, thank God. Those who know how to read are well aware of the earmarks of unbridled and unregulated industry that existed in the past: child labor; slave labor working conditions and insufficient worker safety; adulterated foods and drugs. The list could go on and on. Laissez-faire capitalism, like Marxism, was an idea which only sounded good on paper. When you saw both of them in action, it made you sick. We're not going back there.

The government's only option as I saw it at the time was to stimulate the lack of cash flow in the economy by an infusion of cash. Money circulates, it is not a static commodity. When the government, even through deficit spending, makes cas avialable, that money gets lent to businesses, paid as wages, spent on materials; the people who receive that money then by groceries and cars and pay other people wages. Economic activity results.

Was this stimulus effective in producing this result? Economists can disagree, and do disagree, on whether and how much it did. But I have not yet read a convincing alternative course of action that wouldn't have produced far more dire economic results.

As a lawyer, I'm curious to know what provisions in the Constitution you think prohibited the actions that were taken.

Margie, that's funny, I missed you in my readings on the founding of the country. As to the real founders, I do know something about that. My wife is a descendant of Stephen Hopkins, one of the original Mayflower pilgrims. It's been a lot of fun over the years doing the family research and learning about the day to day lives of those brave men and women.

The Pilgrims were indeed religious pilgrims, but not real believers in freedom of religion. They had the habit of insisting that everyone believe just the way they did, so dissenters like Roger Williams ended up leaving their colonies and founding others of their own. The other founding groups of our country were also a various religious lot -- Quakers in Pennsylvania, Catholics in Maryland and Georgia, Jews in Rhode Island. All looking for a place to practice their own faith.

By the time we got to the 18th century, a new breath of freedom was sweeping the intellectual world. Bright young men like Jefferson and Madison had learned what happened when government and religion got entangled. Both of them ended up corrupted. Read their writings on religious freedom, especially Jefferson's as I have so often urged you to do.

In my First Amendment practice as a lawyer, I have represented many different churches in free exercise cases, and I know very well what the governing principles in the area are. We are free from the government entangling itself in religious affairs or imposing governmentally-mandated religious exercises; and, as you say, we have the freedom to exercise our religious beliefs. These are the two components of the First Amendment religion clauses. Each is essential to our freedom. From your comments on the rights of Muslim Americans, I don't believe you understand the principles of this precious freedom that our founders bequethed us.

In the 14th Amendment, they expressly provided that, "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States."

The Radical Republicans (Sumner, Stevens, et al.) had a deep distrust of state government, just as some of the Founders did of the new federal government they were creating. Each of them came out of different defining moments -- the Revolution vs. the Civil War. In the decades after the Civil War, the Republicans continued to rebalance the federal vs. state relationship by passing the 16th Amendment (expanding the federal government's taxing power), the 17th Amendment (providing for direct election of senators, rather than appointment by state legislatures) and the 18th Amendment (which federalized law on intoxicating liquors).
