A Further Perspective

Queen of the Castle

Everything is different now.

Well, well, well, if tea is not your cup of tea, perhaps we can scrounge up a few crumpets for you on Election Day. This November, we have a wide variety of teas from such exotic locales as Alaska, Nevada, Delaware and even New Hampshire. (There is even a rumor that Herb London and Al Regnery will partner up to market something called Herbal Tea.) Any movement whose influence is being felt in all of the aforementioned states is not about to be blown away by the sneers and sniggers the Democrats have been firing in opposition.

More importantly, the Tea Party candidates have jolted the Republican establishment to the core. They even managed to do that in Delaware: a consummation devoutly to be wished, as Joe Biden wrote back in his Globe Theatre days. Here the Poobahs, the nabobs, the satraps, the moguls and the Kahunas all agreed that Christine O’Donnell was the bugaboo. Well, boo-hoo about your boo-boo, fellas. It could not have happened to nicer guys.

Okay, let me get a grip on myself and come down from cheerleader mode to apply for readmission in the precincts of dispassion. In the last few days leading up to the Delaware Republican Senatorial Primary, your old-guard Republican insider types put on a full-court press in support of Mike Castle. Mike has been a Representative from Delaware for many years and polls indicated that if he won the primary he would win the general election handily. He is a classic RINO, whose horn is considered an aphrodisiac by Northern tribes. His opponent, Christine O’Donnell was getting the usual treatment from the usual suspects: “too dumb, too nutty, too slutty, too green, too yellow, too blue, too gray.” The polls have been less kind to her than to Castle.

But the voters spake, and the pillars did shake. The voters smote, and the Castle lost his moat. Mike Castle will not be your Castle.

Which brings us to the fierce debate which raged between Charles Krauthammer and Rush Limbaugh prior to the primary vote. Both of these gentlemen have waived their protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act and advance their arguments with vigor. Krauthammer slammed Palin and DeMint for backing O’Donnell: they were being “irresponsible and capricious.” He cited a maxim propounded by the late William F. Buckley Jr. to the effect that one ought to back in primaries the most conservative among the electable.

Limbaugh responded that such considerations are suspended in time of emergency, when the country is traveling full-speed in a hand-basket down the road paved with good intentions.

I concurred with Limbaugh yesterday and with the citizens of Delaware today. It is not enough now to elect candidates who lean rightward of Obama. We need people who understand that trillion-dollar deficits and socialized medicine are not inconveniences. They are not annoyances. They are not setbacks. They are not unpleasantnesses. They are not regrettable episodes. They are not divergent views, odd turns, eccentricities. They are not even outrages and atrocities. THEY ARE IMPOSSIBILITIES.

Only candidates who understand that the only answer to “yes, we can” is “no, we cannot” are worth fielding. That is the whole point of sideswiping the political process with a third-party non-party wrecking crew who hold their teacups with monkey wrenches. The Republican establishment is asea and a movement is afoot. This is all coming to a head in November, when we will see who is really ahead and, derivatively, what lies ahead. (Plenty of lies ahead in the campaign, that’s for sure.)

The biggest winner of all is Sarah Palin, who has been tarred by our feathered friends as the ultimate in unelectable. Well, she let down her hair and said goodbye to the Castle. Everything is different now. She is through the looking-glass, and so the last word must go to the White Queen:

That’s the effect of living backwards,” the Queen said kindly: “it always makes one a little giddy at first —”

“Living backwards!” Alice repeated in great astonishment. “I never heard of such a thing!”

— but there’s one great advantage in it, that one’s memory works both ways.”

“I’m sure MINE only works one way.” Alice remarked. “I can’t remember things before they happen.”

“It’s a poor sort of memory that only works backwards,” the Queen remarked.

Mr. Homnick, I hope that O'Donnell has matured in the last ten years. I worked with her in 2000. I liked her, but the woman I knew ten years ago was not a person I would want to see represent me in the Senate. Your arguments make sense...but they depend on the quality of the candidate.

Frank Natoli| 9.15.10 @ 8:22AM

Thanks for your courageous character assassination of the Republican nominee, an assassination made without any details and without any corroboration that might allow someone to judge whether your claimed insider knowledge should be taken seriously.

If you had followed "the woman I knew ten years ago was not a person I would want to see represent me in the Senate" with "nor would I want to be represented by Castle and his innumerable Liberal policy choices nor by Coons with his even more Liberal policy choices and I've decided to stay home on election day" then your assassination of O'Donnell might be seen in perspective. But you didn't.

If the majority of the people of Delaware are willfully ignorant fools who prefer to be represented by Coons or Castle, both of whom would cater to their constituents' willful ignorance, the solution is to enlighten the people, not to join their willful ignorance.

a| 9.15.10 @ 9:02AM

Backhanded smear.

John W.| 9.15.10 @ 9:59AM

Perhaps you haven't matured in the past ten years. That doesn't mean you should make the same assumption about Ms. O'Donnell. (We call this "mature judgement.")

My concern with her was whether she can pull together a campaign capable of winning on 2 Novemeber. I still have concerns, but what her campaign pulled off in winning the primary leads me to hope.

Ghastlyone| 9.15.10 @ 10:57AM

Matured?

I can't be any worse then the kindergarden that's in session 5 months out of the year running the country.

stephanie| 9.15.10 @ 1:21PM

Sure Lucius, we believe you. Uh huh.

loulou| 9.15.10 @ 1:32PM

I'm not a Delawarean but O'Donnell sounded just fine when I've heard her on Levin and Ingraham.

The strange thing is that Delaware has elected and reelected the clown Biden--a know plagiarizer and liar (he graduated at the bottom of his class of Syracuse Law, not the top) to say nothing of his constant faux pas. With bad plastic surgery and obvious hair plugs, to boot.

Viator| 9.16.10 @ 4:50AM

This guy is a troll.

ggoblue| 9.15.10 @ 7:04AM

lucius...our enemies have one debbie the dumbass stabenow in the senate...and her vote counts fully.

we only need people who know right from wrong and will take a stand.

48 days until the tsunami....god bless candidate O'Donnell. she already accomplished more than most career politicians ever do...she has expunged a huge rino....

WRTolkas| 9.15.10 @ 8:23AM

Amen ggoblue. When is Reid's finger-puppet stabenow up for defeat?

Beboper| 9.16.10 @ 8:06AM

You forgot jihadist apologist and history-challenged Patty Murry ( bin Laden has been "out in these countries for decades, building schools, building roads, building infrastructure, building day care facilities, building health care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful. We haven't done that.") Hamas is really a social welfare outfit founded by Mother Theresa.

And let us not leave out the diminutive Munchkin-idiot stand-in who survives politically as long as the federal trough continues to feed her vote machine.

The GOP's female entries into the senate's house of horrors, the two Maine witches, give them a run for their money but still come up short in quantifiable stupid and ridiculous.

Beboper| 9.16.10 @ 8:09AM

And let us not leave out the diminutive Munchkin-idiot stand-in who survives politically as long as the federal trough continues to feed her vote machine.

This, of course, is MD's own Barbara Mikulski.

Ret. Marine| 9.15.10 @ 7:12AM

Chaulk another for the "taxed enough Already" crowd. Kuddos to Sarah of the American Conservative tribe. May they flourish under God's protection.
I would have to admit, I was not sure this candidate was going to survive after the ususal demeaning way the opposition played itself to defeat, but alas, it worked once again to the favor of the Conservative tribe. A good and well done job up there in the wilderness of the great North East, home of the we know better than you do crowd. Yeah right. Now that the initial work is behind you, this is where you now get out and flaunt the losers with the same avengence they retain for your sharp honesty. Castle a Republican, well yes, conservative actually no. He now can be officially called a RLB, a Rino Left Behind.

ChrisInMaine| 9.15.10 @ 8:19AM

Well put, Mr. Homnick. It appears that we, the people, have finally gotten the full attention of the Republican establishment. Frankly, I am amazed it took this long. Now, the question is - do they understand that this is not just about reducing the "D's" in Congress? Sadly, I doubt it. The sooner they understand and embrace that this war is about a return to conservative values and the repudiation of progressivism, the better.

Lawrence Boccardi| 9.15.10 @ 8:22AM

I am amused by the indignation shown by the RINO boosters, over Ms. O'Donnells alleged "personal" transgressions. What about a Treasury Sec, who doesn't pay his taxes, A Congessional Black Caucus that gives our tax dollars to their relatives as "scholarship grants", and an $800 Billion payoff to Dem interest groups, the most egregious of which, may be the $800,000 to UCLA, to teach black men how to wash their genitals???

John Navratil| 9.15.10 @ 9:43AM

Or even the guy who writes the tax laws (Rangel) not only failing to declare income, but getting re-elected as well?

Onto another point: Since the Republican Party has announced that they will not financially support O'Donnell, it is up to us. Contribute to her campaign at:

stephanie| 9.15.10 @ 1:26PM

The folks that reelct Rangle time and time again are crooks just like him. He lowers the bar for them so they need not aspire to anything greater than picking up their welfare checks and foodstamp credit cards. He is a disservice to the people of Harlem, while also being a crook.

Nancy in NC| 9.15.10 @ 5:53PM

If everything I have heard in the media is true about Ms. McDonnell, she appears to be cleaner than about 80% of the morons presently serving in Congress. Looks like a win/win to me.

Siegfried X| 9.15.10 @ 8:31AM

Like this says, it's about the issues.

coal carrier| 9.15.10 @ 9:13AM

With all of the Rinos taking pot shots at O’Donnell, starting with Carl Rove last night on Hannity, how do they think she will vote if elected.
Will she vote for or against big government spending? Will she vote to repeal Obamacare? Will she vote to reduce taxes? Everyone’s taxes. How about abortion, global warming and Cap & Trade?

Now, how do you think her Republican counterpart would vote on the same issues? The same as Collins or Snow? I believe the answer is quite clear.

Kratsuli| 9.15.10 @ 9:39AM

In response to an article yesterday that posed:
"Is Castle a RINO?" and then concluded: No.

You are right.
Castle WAS a RINO!!!

Proud to have voted for O'Donnell even though I know she is flawed. Frankly, I don't care. I am passed caring about that sort of thing. I think the country is in such bad case that if Charles Manson could guarantee he would vote to cut the size of govt, he would be preferable to Mother Theresa if she kept things going as they are presently.

:-]

Albert| 9.15.10 @ 10:43AM

It all depends on what the definition of the word "is" is. :-)

Dan Hirsch| 9.15.10 @ 9:41AM

Oh, she can't possibly win. I heard some chattering head refer to LBJ's big win over the 'hopelessly' conservative Barry Goldwater in 1964. What they all forget is that this was less than twelve months after the JFK assassination-LBJ could have spent the campaign season doing Groucho impersonations and won going away.

The Republicans have gone through these battles before. Ronald Reagan was supposedly going to destroy the GOP in '76 - he lost the primary and worked hard to support the Republicans who won their primaries. (Gee, who's doing that now, Mrs. Palin?) In '80, the Gipper showed the RINO's to be wrong, way wrong. Methinks we are closer to 1980 than the RINO's, Mr. Rove, Mr. Krauthammer, know.

One can only hope for the 'extinction' of the RINO's on November 2. But they are a hardy species and will take a lot of extincting...

Bring me more Tea!

I was delighted to hear Mr. Limbaugh weigh in yesterday on Ms. O'Donnell. For Rush, who never gets into the habit of endorsement, it was a departure that represented the people. We the people have had it with the elite ruling class. And after hearing Karl Rove, who I used to respect, wax about how Ms. O'Donnell will not get GOP representation through funds, or anything else GOP, I have decided that we the people can close our checkbooks to the GOP. Let that settle into the elite power mongers among them. We were already disenchanted with GOP in general. They were only ones to vote for. Now, we the people is the choice, and we the people, fed up with Beltway mentalities, will take one hand and wipe all the players off the chess board with one swipe, if they don't clear their heads and commit to doing right. We have had it. And we have spoken.

Can you hear us now? If not, I have a cattle prod I bet I can get your attention with. Works fine for me to use it on the collective butts of D.C., don't ya know?????

Albert| 9.15.10 @ 10:47AM

I stopped giving money to the GOP 15 years ago. If and when I donate, my money goes directly to a candidate. Karl Rove should don his checked pants and bow tie and return to his New England Country Club.

Ken (Old Texican)| 9.15.10 @ 9:54AM

A side-note

I am especially excited about Sarah and DeMint getting on the exact same page.

WOW, what a pair...heh both of them.

Be sure to order Sarah's new book now from Amazon. From what I'm hearing, they won't be able to print them fast enough for you to get one soon.

stephanie| 9.15.10 @ 1:31PM

New book? What's it called Ken? I'm ready to order it now!

PineKnot| 9.15.10 @ 10:04AM

If we can't sweep the Dems out in Nov, it might be time to break out the pitchforks and the tar and feathers.

Time to water the tree of liberty. . . .

Kratsuli| 9.15.10 @ 10:23AM

Anyone else laugh at Mike Castle's name?

Mike Astle.
Mike Asstle
Mike Asshle
Mike Assh*le!

Good riddince old prune RINO. We don't need your stinking endorsement.

The Man| 9.15.10 @ 10:26AM

Unfortunately I can see both sides of the Krauthammer-Limbaugh argument. As a resident of Minnesota, Jesse Ventura was a good example of what can happen when voters go off the party reservations. However, these are tough times in so many ways that I have to put aside the chess game analogy, table my fears of future supreme court nominee battles and take stock of recent events. I have to agree with the Tea Party premise - what good is a moderate Republican if they abandon conservative principles when their political longevity is threatened? I am with the O'Donnells of the future - now is as good a time as any to start cleaning house. Yes we'll lose some short-term clout, but like Obama taking advantage of the public zeitgeist in 08, the GOP should be capitalizing on the Tea Party's efforts - not fighting them tooth and nail. Now my big question - what needs to be done for O'Donnell to turn this primary victory into a November win?

serfer62| 9.15.10 @ 4:02PM

Right now all Kommiecrat nominations can be blocked in Judicary...except gramnesty is on that committee, you know the pussy that passed OHbamas nominees.
Majority or not get rid of that rino and no more Kommiecrat judges. Period.

Rich Fisher| 9.15.10 @ 10:49AM

I was born a Republican in 1948 and have supported Republicans since, even when I had to hold my nose to vote for them. Well, no more. It's time to take the country back from Liberals and RINOS and this is the year. You want my vote and my money, you had better swear to oppose everything Obama stands for. If not, then get out of the way because we are coming for you. We may not get rid of all RINOS and Liberals but we will make them insignificant. If all the people saying ODonnel can't win would shut up and get busy trying to help her win then she would win in a landslide. As we used to say in the Marines, "lead, get out of the way or get run over". Go Christine.

Ted| 9.15.10 @ 12:34PM

We always used to say "Lead, Follow, or get the F*ck out of the way." Whatever works!

Nancy in NC| 9.15.10 @ 5:57PM

Well now Jay...you made your case, or does THE MOVEMENT prefer "THE CASE" (sole and unique, irrefutable, etc) sort of a Lillian Hellman defense off Stalin after the purge trials. I am spiritually on your side, as ever, however (there is that nasty old word again), 50 plus is a helluva lot sweeter than 48 minus--is your Joan of Arc nobody of rather dubious capabilities worth that?....AHA you respond, "AHA Claudia, you are missing the point, the lady will vanquish the demo dragon"--AHA your (please add your most favoured appendage)--I am living with Mr Paul and Miss Angle, hollowed (sp OK) be their name, I didn't need a silly inept champion in Delaware who, a you say, MIGHT win, but most assuredly rmeoved the near certainty of contro from the GOP..

"Control"...big word 'till you spell out the consequences..subpoena power, investigative hearings, new and talented committe chairmen, new staffs--a new world in short..OK, My Jay, O My Wise One..sure you are most probably right..but it was one bloody HELL of a bad trade!

I remain yours, passionately, obediently, submissivelty for eternity, and with several oceans of love...

Claudia

Tom| 9.15.10 @ 11:40AM

Why ever do you think Castle would be on board with any remotely conservative agenda? Look at his record. The Republicans had years of control and did nothing substantive of it because too many weak kneed RINOs were afraid to offend their colleagues from across the aisle.

As far as O’Donnell's abilities to run a campaign she beat Castle, didn't she?

R Martin| 9.15.10 @ 1:44PM

Claudia, you are no Green Mountain Girl. Ethan Allen and his merry band fought against the tyranny of English land grants and succeeded against long odds. And that effort helped the successful American Revolution against even longer odds. He wasn't worrying about subpoena power, committee chairs or whatever. He was fighting for what was right. So should you.

Al Adab| 9.15.10 @ 11:29AM

The accomodationist GOP continues to fight agaisnt Conservatives long both taken for granted and betrayed by the GOP. These election results represent a Conservative purge of the RINO majority by principled Conservatives. Win or lose in November we, like Cato, have taken a stand for Liberty against an impending tyranny. That is not a bad legacy to gift to future generations.

Sam Vaughn| 9.15.10 @ 12:07PM

Not since Reagan has the "country class" been represented in the corridors of power. Republican elite's of today are the worst of the worst. Coward's who speak out of both sides of their mouth. The more derision they pile on the "country class" the more inspired we become. This is political warfare, but unlike Fort Sumter, it was the ruling class of coast's that declared war on the middle class. Those crazy Americans who dream big dreams and will not ask our "betters" for permission.....

Lucius Cornelius| 9.15.10 @ 12:10PM

I have my opinion about O'Donnell based on having worked with her. The criticisms aimed at me are, in part correct. I knew her ten years ago and people can, and generally do, mature over time.

Since Christine is now the nominee, let me aim my anger at a better target: the Republican establishment. I think it is an outrage that they are hesitating on supporting her. The Republican establishment has betrayed conservatives time and time again; they have no excuses.

No one hates establishment Republicans more than I do. I understand the desire (and the need) to boost those fools out of office and replace them with responsible people. Does anyone here remember when Bill Thomas was chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee? A bill had been passed by the House and Senate that would have changed the way religious charities were limited regarding political activities. This would have been a great boost for conservatives. President Bush stated that he was eager for this bill to be written into law. But Thomas was a country club, establishment Republican. Thomas hated conservatives and was angry at religious conservatives because they had opposed him when he was lobbying to become Ways and Means chairman. He used his position as Chairman to have the provision concerning religious charities removed from the bill. I was working on this issue and I will never forget how the establishment Republicans betrayed us.

Old Bob| 9.15.10 @ 12:35PM

What the RNC should remember is that the tea party voters and voters of a similar rebellious mind are not in this coming election to vote in Republicans. They want to vote for conservatives likely to put the brakes on Washington. If a Congressional majority can only be attained through the election of RINOs who will jump ship to support the absurd policies and appointments of the Obama administration, what have the tea party voters accomplished by their extraordinary efforts in the primaries?

The Republican Party has an opportunity to get with the new wave of tea party conservatives who reflect the national mood of opposition to further big government policies. If the Republican party cannot embrace and work to further a no nonsense small government slate of candidates brought to the fore by tea party votes in Republican primaries, it runs the risk of becoming totally irrelevant to a likely majority of voters.

As others have commented: RNC lead, follow, or get out of the way.

Oldefarte| 9.15.10 @ 12:36PM

Jay, great article! As you are no doubt younger than I, let me remind you [and everyone here] of the words of Barry Goldwater, the pioneer Republican conservative who was trounced by Lyndon Johnson in the 1960's, who said, EXTREMISM IN THE DEFENSE OF LIBERTY IS NO VICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

megapotamus| 9.15.10 @ 12:52PM

I heard the genesis of the Limbaugh Rule live and I read it differently. I think the point was that this was a time of great opportunity that should not be squandered. Personally, I encourage and endorse only candor in our representatives. If you are conservative, vote that way and talk that way. If you are a liberal, likewise. All the crypto-commies, of which Castle ain't one, he is a straight-up commie, need naught to be defeated except to be exposed. This counts in Delaware as much as anywhere in this nation and, I think history reveals, any-damn-where.

No, Rove belongs at the Nation. Or at least NYT.

WhiskeyJim| 9.16.10 @ 2:58AM

Rove is a big government RHINO himself. His harangue of O'Donnell on Fox was embarrassing to watch.

I'd love to watch a Tea party in Delaware with Palin and DeMint campaigning for O'Donnell, resulting in her election in November.

Just for the record, the 'elect a RHINO' strategy is a ALWAYS a bad one. It has led to the downfall of the Republican party. It is a minority position, being a small letter democrat.

We need as many principled voices defending free markets as we can get.

O'Donnell isn't perfect. But then, who is? At least she didn't vote for cap and trade. That would be unforgivable.

ClaudiaMonteverdi| 9.16.10 @ 6:14AM

Hey there Mister Whiskey Jim--what a damn fool comment regarding Karl Rove--shame on you!
