A deconstructed transcript of Mr. Obama’s Iraq &
Economy speech.
Good news from the Crescent… er, Oval Office. Well, not exactly
good, because good news about wars is inappropriate by definition,
inasmuch as all war is regrettable at best and often reprehensible,
and calling it “good” is insensitive to boot. The not-so-good news
is that we won the war in Iraq. Well, not exactly won, because
winning is a flawed construct based on concepts borrowed from other
fields of endeavor.
And on third thought, even those other fields of endeavor
like sports and commerce should not refer to winning either,
because it presents a false view of human superiority based on
episodic rather than essential criteria. Furthermore, it feeds into
a psychology which generates models of human interaction based on
promoting gaps between levels of performance rather than achieving
mutuality and symbiosis.
So, to review, the not-so-good news is that we not-so-won
the war. Well, not exactly war, because the United States has no
interest which is opposed to the intrinsic interest of any
individual or group of individuals in the Middle East or elsewhere.
The notion of war cannot be rightly applied to a military action
engaged in for the purpose of securing a democratic result within a
country which we intend to neither occupy nor dominate.
Additionally, even to the extent that manifestations of
conflict emerge between our forces and local militant activists who
perceive a contradiction between their interests and ours, the
language of “war” is inflammatory. It has the effect of identifying
particular civilian or quasi-military forces as an “enemy,” which
communicates to American citizens a sense of demonization while
entrenching a spirit of resistance in those opponents whom we have
ostracized by this process.
Once again, the not-so-good news is that we not-so-won the
not-so-war. One thing we clearly did was accomplish the mission
begun by President George W. Bush. Now, don’t take that as a
compliment to him, but as a slap, since he — ha ha ha, wait for it
— announced in 2003 with a funny sign that the mission had already
been accomplished. And on second thought, this is not even the
mission begun by George W. Bush, since that was a mission we
opposed at the time.
Then again, although combat is over, we have not fully
accomplished the mission even yet, since we still have 50,000 men
on the ground holding things together. Thus, we have
not-so-accomplished the ill-defined mission which George W. Bush
started for some stupid reason, so that the tangential advantages
we are touting tonight should not rightfully accrue to his credit.
But in all fairness we should note that I called former President
Bush to tell him that we all agree he loves the country and the
troops.
Make no mistake. We are definitely leaving Iraq, except
for the soldiers we left behind. And we are surging now in
Afghanistan to clear things up so we can definitely leave by 12:01
a.m. of July 1, 2011. This decisive message should strike terror
into the hearts of the Taliban (who will not get their free
Slurpees in 7 Eleven unless Joe Biden sponsors their emigration to
Delaware.) Let no one harbor any doubt about the determination of
this administration to lead this military of
this country in this conflict until the
not-so-enemy collapses under the weight of all the heavily
emphasized usages of “this.” We will not-so-defeat the
Taliban, including their newly formed and oddly named July 2
Committee.
Which reminds us about the economy. The economy is
struggling despite the wonderfulness of the stimulus, due to the
scandalous mismanagement by former President George W. Bush, who
everyone can agree loves the country and the fatcat bankers. Our
administration will continue fighting the sluggishness of the
economy, although we do not like the connotations of the word
“fighting.” We will not rest until every trouble spot in the
country has a sign trumpeting the American Remuneration and
Retribution Act or whatever the heck Ol’ Joe is callin’ it this
week. And this, my friends, is a big f***ing deal.
At this point, we will have a moment of silence to ignore
the Tea Parties and the Glenn Beck rally.
My fellow Americans, now that you know my views with
utmost clarity, I ask you to help me recover our lost American
values, other than the value of a dollar. These are special times
and history will judge us for how we answered the major questions
of our times like: is the golf better at Martha’s Vineyard or
Pebble Beach? Oh, and one last thing. If a pollster from Rasmussen
and the vast right-wing conspiracy calls, will you stop saying you
strongly disapprove? That is racist.
Thank you and good night.

The obamagedon PIMP thugocracy chugs along.....
After the pimp recruits his ho's, he methodically brutalizes them mentally, emotionally and physically so as to 'put her in her place'. As the ho changes her outlook to one of desperation and survival the pimp lightens up on her and she is treated 'not so badly', she succumbs to the pimps view of her new lifestyle.
We will now have 60 days of non-stop, Madison Avenue, lame stream media promotion of the usurper-n-chief and selected dhimocrats in a concerted effort to stave off a possible landslide victory by the G O O P on Nov. 2nd. Unfortunately, a large percentage of the electorate will buy into this boogie-woogie which, when coupled with the inevitable voter fraud initiated by the ruling class will result in, basically, little or no change in the political direction of these once great United States of America.

arlo, I hear your Let's Roll! Be careful what you wish for you just might get it. I'd like to be more optimistic about restoring our constitutional republic but the awakening I've been seeing maybe a little too late. With the revelation of Ken Mehlman the top man in the GOP coming out of the closet and admitting to working against the party platform and its base for all this time outing others that felt the same way and getting back slaps and kudos for being true to himself from a lot of Republicans should open your eyes to why our agenda never gains any traction and it never will with this bunch!
I'd like nothing more than to give the whole bunch the Jonah toss but unfortunately there is still too many conservative Republicans that think that the party will save us.
Palin spoke at a tea party rally in the South sometime ago and said we needed to reject the good old boy Republican establishment but then what is she do? Come to Iowa before the primary and endorses the good old boy Republican establishment candidate former four term governor Terry Branstad instead of Bob Vander Platt constitutionalist with the stones to take on the activist court here in Iowa that usurped authority and legislated from the bench regarding Iowa's DOMA law. Here we go again another Republican (Palin) the darling of the conservatives doing the same old crap saying one thing and doing another just another two-faced Republican politician, while she shot herself in the face with me I can't vote for her now.

Ouch, that gave me a headache. Sadly, that's precisely what we heard the other night. Whenever this president opens his mouth one has to question his earnestness and truthfulness. As depressing as that is to us here think how even more frustrating it must be for those fighting in Afghanistan. God forbid we should hear the word Victory from our commander in chief.
Mike| 9.3.10 @ 10:18AM
If Obama used the word Victory, he would have been lying.
If Iraq was a victory, I would hate to see defeat.
Spyder308| 9.3.10 @ 10:50AM
There is no victory in war. Everyone looses. That is why intelligent leaders would never take their nation to war unless there is no choice.
We went into Iraq for two simple reasons. First, to get Sadamn because he was the guy who tried to kill Bush's Pa. Second, the US is reluctant to change leaders in time of war. Starting a war with Iraq was insurance that Bush would be reelected, and the worst insult to a President is not to get reelected. Bush needed to out do his Pa.
Both of those objectives were accomplished so in a way it was a victory.

Several years ago, I had a discussion with my ultra liberal 30ish year children about Iraq. I asked them to think hypothetically. What if, I suggested, at the end of the day, we left Iraq after establishing something of a democratic government - albeit at the mercy of various tribal/religious disputes - representing the various interests in Iraq. What if, Iraq became an example for the rest of the middle east in respecting the views of others and the rights of women? Their collective answer was, "That'll never happen!". So much for hypothetical analysis. But the point to be remembered is that at the time, it was the Democratic Party's mantra that the "war" (not-so-war) had already been "Lost" and there was no point in pursuing it. I then told them that if my hypothetical came to fruition, would their views of George Bush change? "Dad, what you are suggesitng will NEVER HAPPEN, so don't ask about our views of George Bush." Well, to me, and to my libeal friends, strike me unconscious, but George Bush can take pride in having had the incredible courage to bring out the improbable. Will Iraq survive as such an example in the middle east? Noone knows, but the seeds are there and I would bet that in a few years, Iraq will be viewed as an amazing success story. To President Obama, all I can say is "you were wrong as a Senator and how dare you even begin to suggest that you had a hand in anything positive that Iraw achieves in the future."
Mike | 9.3.10 @ 10:16AM
Iraq was a loss the minute we set foot in the place.
Even if Iraq does become the example for the rest of the middle east, women's right and all that other do-gooder touchy feely liberal junk - who cares? It's not the USA's job to ensure women's rights in this world. As a tax payer I resent many expenditures foreign and domestic. I don't like paying nearly 40 percent of earnings for elusive Iraqi democracy. In truth, women had more rights under Saddam than they will under the Shia theocracy.
The ultimate question - knowing what we know now, would we do it over again?
GW| 9.4.10 @ 2:26AM
Yes. At least still get rid of Hussein. We didn't need to stay in Iraq for 7 years, but to say we didn't have tactical reasons for going in makes me think you're just a pussy who uses higher taxes as a crutch for saying we should never use force.
Clinton nee Publius| 9.3.10 @ 9:39AM
Whew! I'm glad a I watched the real estate channel instead of the musics of America's own version of Hugo Chavez. John II| 9.3.10 @ 4:32PM
Er--Maddie, I'm not sure the syntax works on this one. Perhaps I'm just not getting it in the Friday afternoon haze, but for the sake of syntactic cogency, I think the diction needs to be tighter and the punctuation more assertive. Mightn't this work better for the last three verses:
Her penchant to alarm me
With objections to "smarmy"
I can tolerate, but warn: "Don't get bawdia!"
And now back to my viewing of "Omar Khayyam" (1957), one of the sillier flicks of the fifties, despite a strong cast: Cornel Wilde, Debra Paget, Michael Rennie, Raymond Massey, Sebastian Cabot (who plays Wazir in the 1955 film version of "Kismet," rather a let-down too when measured against the fabulous Broadway production: Hollywood has always tended to be cloyingly sentimental about the Middle East).

This truly is a praise-worthy work of literary genius. The crescent office is apropos in another sense - given that the occupant of same is about to be "rolled" by the electorate on November 2.
The hoopster Prez, who is primarily conflicted about whether he loves the big roundball more than the little (dimpled) roundball, is seeing his bubble burst by his own (predictable) self-serving, ideologically bankrupt view of a country in which he did not grow up. Just to clarify, conceding that he was born in Hawaii, he clearly did not "grow up" (in any sense, but particularly not) in America - not the America that most of us in this nation love, and for which many have died.
Best wishes for a great Labor Day weekend, particularly for those who are sufficiently fortunate to have employment, and in gratitude for those who provide that employment opportunity - the latter excludes all levels of government, who receive their resources from the rest of us.
Respectfully,
VDon

Spyder308, you are a moron. I don't like the way Bush handled the Iraq war, but he did not start it for the reasons you so blatantly lie about. The entire world, including Sadam's own generals, believed Iraq had stockpiles of WMD's. And he probably did, but they were moved to Syria before we got there. We know that he had contacts with al Qaeda. We know he paid the families of Palestinian suicide bombers $25,000 each.
After 9/11, if after 12 ultimatums, Sadam did sell a WMD to a terrorist group, and the group used it against America, everyone including me would have been calling for Bush's impeachment for derilection of duty. Bush was correct in starting the war - but was a moron for pussy-footing around with the "soft footprint" BS. He should have flat out won the war. Remember Moqtada al Sadr and how he embarrassed our military by holding up in that mosque. And how we allowed him to move from city to city for how many years. Where is he now? Iran, I believe. But I suspect he will return to the scene soon. Bush should have blown up the mosque with al Sadr and all the other animals in it. Then, the Iraqis and al Qaesda and the other insurgents would have known we were for real.

Well said, all. Uh, I hate to be picky, but I wait, hopelessly, for someone to say that when George Bush posted that Mission Accomplished sign on that ship, he was not talking about the Iraq war, but about his piloting that airplane on that ship's deck. Most Americans, who were watching him do that, surely know that. Got that?
