Patty Murray in Trouble

Tuesday’s primary confirmed that this senator mom in tennis shoes is no re-election shoo-in this year.

Washington State has a history as a dark blue locale, a well-deserved reputation as a politically dark blue locale, virtually incapable of electing Republicans to major statewide offices, or to a majority of congressional seats. But with the GOP emboldened by a sour economy, long-term high rates of unemployment, and voters concerned about the deficit and national debt, political operative groupthink is now tending towards the view that a Republican wave will sweep Democrats out of office, including in places like the Evergreen State this year. Tuesday’s top-two, “jungle” primary results offered an indicator of why Washington Republicans seeking to oust incumbent senior senator Patty Murray might just have good cause to cheer, with just over two months to go until Election Day.

Murray, who is currently serving out her third term in the Senate and acts as Harry Reid’s number four in Senate Democratic leadership, failed to reach the 50 percent mark Tuesday in a contest where she had no serious Democratic competition — but plenty of Republicans on the ballot.

Moreover, the most well-known among them, her months-ago predetermined general election opponent Dino Rossi, took just under 34 percent of the vote to Murray’s 46 percent — a tally best described as too close for comfort.

Even worse for Murray, when the votes cast by supporters of other Republicans — namely former Washington Redskins player and Tea Party favorite Clint Didier (who garnered about 12 percent of the vote) and businessman Paul Akers (who garnered about 2.5 percent) — were added to Rossi’s total, Republicans collectively bested Murray’s take of the vote, 48 percent to 46.

Those are numbers bound to leave Murray scared, especially given the overall trends taking shape: The progressive base is in the doldrums, independents are abandoning Democrats, and rarely do you meet a voter who associates anything positive with Washington, D.C. Of course, Murray’s consultants and the DSCC have known for a long time that as it stands, she is no shoo-in for re-election. According to the latest SurveyUSA polling, only 41 percent of adults surveyed approve of the job she is doing, while 54 percent disapprove. Even in the metropolitan Seattle area, from which Murray hails, only 43 percent gave her a thumbs up — perhaps little surprise when the unemployment rate statewide is running at 8.9 percent and worries about the economy, as they do everywhere, trump other considerations.

Murray has been in a particularly strong position, given her role in Senate leadership, to ameliorate all this. Yet she has not. Meanwhile, she has raked in close to $1 million over recent years from lawyers and lobbyists, her top two contributors according to OpenSecrets.org. As November nears, expect voters to ask more and more “what has she done for me?” and for the Rossi camp to reply “nothing” — or “nothing good.” Whether voters actively decide to take a chance on Rossi or just chuck their ballots in the recycle bin, the result could be the same: Patty out, Dino in.

Setting aside Murray’s actual share of the vote, her weak showing in Tuesday’s primary, 440,119 votes as at the time of writing, constitutes a warning sign that all is not well Chez Patty. So do those 140,192 votes she garnered in King County, the most consistently liberal portion of the state. When running in the 2008 primary, also of the top-two, “jungle” variety and against Rossi, Gov. Christine Gregoire managed to secure 696,306 votes statewide, 216,185 in King County. It is possible that Gregoire and her allies invested more than did Murray in get-out-the-vote efforts aimed at a primary where, again, the result had been predetermined months in advance. But Murray allies such as labor unions have a lot riding on her re-election, and have not exactly been thoroughly inactive to date. The failure of Murray to drive a similar number of votes as Gregoire did in 2008 in King County very possibly signals an enthusiasm problem afflicting her base, especially when viewed through the prism of those low approval ratings, including in metropolitan Seattle.

In a state where the overwhelming majority of voters vote by mail, Murray’s “ask” of Democrats and Democrat-minded independents will prove easier than that of some Democrats running this cycle. And to be sure, Washington is not Pennsylvania, Murray is tougher than she looks, and the DSCC has from early this year demonstrated a willingness to play dirty in order to prop her up. But with virtually every number going showing Murray in trouble, despite all this, it’s quite possible that the woman who first ran as “just” the “Mom in Tennis Shoes” may be headed back to where she came from, both geographically and professionally, come November 3.

Good question 'what has she done for me?' She doesn't work for you - she works for the lobbiests and the trial lawyers.

kate| 8.20.10 @ 3:05PM

Did you happen to see the MSN article, espousing Murray's 'long struggle with helping people?' Dino was mentioned as her Republican competitor in one sentence. The rest of the article was clearly cheering Murray on. Liberal Bias in the media? Obviously.

Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 8.19.10 @ 7:52AM

She was a mom in tennis shoes. The public gave her a chance and she spent it away. As she moved up in leadership she proved ever more ineffectual. In 2008 she endorsed Hillary Clinton, but got slapped around when the Washington Democratic caucus gave two thirds of it's delegates to Obama and only one third to Hillary.

Obama needs every Senator he can get so he's ignoring the snub and allegedly going to her rescue.

However, her true beliefs come out at times like most politicians. In 2004 she made an idiotic remark at a high school which made Osama Bin Laden sound like a saint claiming that "terrorist leader Osama bin Laden is popular in poor countries because he helped pay for schools, roads and even day care centers."

Her take on it, like most left wing liberals, was that we should go rebuild infrastructure as opposed to dropping bombs. There were calls for her to step down but let's face it, the left in America loves terrorists. An example of that is the Justice Department bending over backwards to do anything they can to free terrorists.

Ironically, both Murray and her opponent in the upcoming Senate election both came from families with 7 children.

The difference is that Rossi is heavily involved in the commercial real estate market while Murray worked as a preschool teacher and at a community college. In essence, Rossi has created wealth, and Murray has existed as just another looter throughout her adult life.

However, looters are popular because the public is too stupid to understand the effects of the political ambitions of the looter class, which is currently the ruling class.

Shamus| 8.19.10 @ 11:14AM

She's just a moron in tennis shoes.

Clinton nee Publius| 8.19.10 @ 2:13PM

Wrong. Socialist moron. The tennis shoes are the victims in this...

Chairman Nobomba| 8.19.10 @ 2:02PM

Enjoy your comment very much. Lefty looters in tennis shoes are very nimble with their loots. You chase them and they get away fast.

Jonathon| 8.19.10 @ 2:55PM

"terrorist leader Osama bin Laden is popular in poor countries because he helped pay for schools, roads and even day care centers."

This statement is completely true, regardless of what you might think of it.

And how does being a public school teacher make one a 'looter'? Public school teachers, including at community colleges are hardworking and underpaid and provide one of the most important services of any member of our communities. You really think the real estate market is more important than our children's education?

gearjammer| 8.19.10 @ 3:43PM

Yes Jonathan the real estate market and other markets are more important than " education " because the pay for it all dope. My heroes are people like myself and my wife we work in the private sector without us you and the rest of our teachers are homeless bums. We want 40 hours a week from you clowns-3 weeks vacation-you can collect garbage when the kids are on vacation all summer and winter break and summer break and while we are at it you will be compelled to be in social security and medicare-no more we retire at 70 you at 50. That's your future smart ass. The hard ass middle class is ready to rumble. By the way students in poor, deprived nations out test whatever they call a high school grad in King's County.

Don Carlson| 8.19.10 @ 5:07PM

Is it possible that Osama paid for Jonathan, too? Well, you get what you pay for.

matt| 8.19.10 @ 11:58PM

well said gearjammer. Eloquent, but on point. 25% of the US workforce CANNOT be government employees, its unsustainable.

Bruce | 8.19.10 @ 4:20PM

Been drinking much kool-aid lately Jon boy?

"Teachers" underpaid? The average compensation of school teachers (sic) in the US is now $68,000 per anum. That was just released last week online. For that, they work an average of 9 months of the year - if one includes every holiday, personal days off, birthday off, snow days, etc. I know many teachers and my former BiL was one, so don't bother arguing the point. On average they "work" 6.5 hours a day. Their pension plans and benefit packages are among the best anywhere. They cannot be fired for poor performance, like any other occupation.

And that is what makes school "teachers" looters. By the way - have you checked the stats on SAT scores, graduation levels, and college performance lately? Great job by our "teachers".

Kevin Riley O'Keeffe | 8.19.10 @ 4:48PM

At 68K per anum, teachers would be under-paid...if they did a good job. As things presently stand, most are grossly over-paid.

Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 8.19.10 @ 5:47PM

Jonathon's comment is about what one would expect from a collectivist. The Jonathon mindset indicates that as long as someone has engaged in collective behavior then what does it matter if they killed 3,000 human beings, or for that matter, endorse the abortion of human life to the tune of a million abortions a years. You see, because they were good at one time, because they "took a village" to help children and build roads, what does the rest matter?

Right off the bat you could make the same case for Hitler, Stalin or many other dictators who massacred millions of human beings.

But that's the essence of the progressive secular humanist. Care not for the effects, only the intent.

And the death chambers and racism are always the end games of all collectivism. The road to hell is paved with good intentions and the evil inherent in all progressiveness.

Hector| 8.20.10 @ 2:55PM

You're partly right in that out children's education is extremely important. Too important, in fact, to trust to the labor unions, which are awash in morons like Murray. Her fecklessness and public stupidity as a senator, and her love of unions over the work they supposedly do, suggest her level of success as a teacher, thus marking her as a likely looter, not to mention an oxygen waster.

Susie| 8.21.10 @ 9:14AM

Without the $$ from the real estate market and other markets, there would be no $$$ for education or anything else for state and federal govts. Where would the $$ come from? Plus, I'm tired of hearing how "underpaid" teachers are. Who isn't underpaid. Plus, when their pensions, healthcare benefits, and other benefits are added, "underpaid" isn't exactly the term I would use.

rob| 8.23.10 @ 12:31PM

You really think the real estate market is more important than our children's education?

Did you mean indoctronation?

Citizen-Comrade| 8.19.10 @ 5:28PM

However, looters are popular because the public is too stupid to understand the effects of the political ambitions of the looter class, which is currently the ruling class."

The looters are popular in the Soviet Of Washington if the looters are pro-abortion and pro-homosexual special rights. Those two positions will lock you in, if, of course, there's a big "D" after your girly hyphenated name.

Melvin| 8.19.10 @ 7:55AM

Well, well, well. Looks like the rabid tree-huggers do have a tipping point when it comes to Progressivism.
Who would have ever thought that King County and the Seattle Metro Area would have their fill of Progressive Democrats.
Even so with Gov. Christine Gregoire's get out the dead vote Murray still could squeak out a win. Especially if Pelosi and Reid call Gregoire to mobilize her legions of Orcs to empty out the cemeteries.
Gov. Christine Gregoire is more vicious than Rahm Emanuel, but minus the Chiffon TuuTuu.

Jonathon| 8.19.10 @ 3:04PM

Actually, there is nothing other than this one article to suggest that Seattle has had its fill of progressives. Might be a little early to celebrate...

Dave Jones| 8.19.10 @ 9:14AM

Remember we are talking about Washington state. The election officials have a history of finding votes. Much like Minnesota, they have no qualms about disallowing votes for Republicans and finding lost ballots with fresh ink.

Dustoff| 8.19.10 @ 10:01AM

I know it all to well Dave. I live here and have seen the games they play with votes.

I hope Rossi can pull it off, but you just know. Some uncounted votes are just waiting in a back room for Patty.

pete66| 8.19.10 @ 10:13AM

You got that right. Minnesota Democrats are just as corrupt as Illinois Democrats....it's just that here in Minnesota they're a little more polite while they are screwing you.

sestamibi| 8.19.10 @ 2:42PM

Yes indeed. Both Gov. Gregoire and Sen. Cantwell were first elected under circumstances similar to those that gave us Al Franken.

gearjammer| 8.19.10 @ 10:07AM

I wonder how many voters for Murray will be high on mary jane when they cast their ballot ? I can't believe this goof is a senator. She stepped out of her tennis shoes to fill the shoes of Bill Bradley, Sam Nunn, Mike Mansfield. What is wrong with these people ? If Rossi just plays it buttoned down, sticks to what he knows( economic growth and the role of government)-with some moments of warmth and humor at proper moments he can do it. They will want to picture him as a bully beating up a mom any chance they get=democrats can do this of course but republicans not. He must find a kinder, gentler way of making this corrupt machine politician and imbecile look out of touch and not up to the job of gaining future prosperity. The swing voters are silly, affluent white women who are quite capable of not heeding their husbands warnings that the 401k and property values are going to hell in a hand basket because of people like batty Patty. Still as the Audi or Volvo get yet another year older sans replacement, and the higher end vacation a memory, and hubby hints she might cut down on spa and personal trainer a bit-this particular breed of idiotic female voter might be coaxed to do something wise. As for the lost, wasted, existential, self adsorbed men of that region-prognosis zero. They need their " mommy in her high heeled sneakers " to burp, feed, and diaper them. They cringe if somebody asks them to stand up and be a man and take responsibility. They get agitated at such suggested and will whine( with a tinge of anger even) "chill out". Patty will always get " offa their cloud ", and sing them sweet lullabies and give them what they need. These men have their counter parts in Finland, etc. They may be athletic and virile, or bookish and soft-but are so weak in any real sense of being a man.

Steve| 8.19.10 @ 10:34AM

I feel compelled, as a Washington resident, to pile on (so to speak) Ms. Murray. The woman - to those of you lucky enough not to be exposed to her regularly - is profoundly, incredibly stupid. As in not having the foggiest idea what reality is or how the world works. Just mind-blowingly ignorant; and completely unaware of it. A prize specimen of a ruling class grunt lifted to power by her masters to do their bidding. Ugh!!!!!!!!!!

Ned| 8.19.10 @ 11:21AM

I'm also doomed to live here in the Seattle area another year, while my son finishes at the UDumb. For the non-afflicted who may not know, 90% of Washington State is conservative. And then there's Seattle/King County. The city is up to it's ears in loonies, and unfortunately there are enough of them in an otherwise sparsely populated state that they drive the political system, which is predictably corrupt, leftist and irrational. (Sorry, that is triple redundant, isn't it) Politics here is sufficiently vile that we were the test bed for the ACORN led manipulation and voter fraud that give Minnesota “Senator Al” – we got Governor Christine, and multi-billion dollar deficits. And Patty. I understand that staffers in D.C. often refer to her as “The Brain Trust”, but if you’d like an education in how ugly Demoron politics can be, just keep an eye on the anti-Rossi campaign that is already underway here.

Cliff| 8.19.10 @ 1:31PM

I'm a former Washington State resident and you're too generous. They elect D's in the 2nd Congressional District and the 3rd Congressional District, and neither of them touch Seattle/King county (of course, we look poised to win the 3rd this cycle) and the 1st, 9th and 6th don't have much of King County in them (although they do have parts) and elect D's as well.

That said, I think we can beat Murray this cycle if the Didier people aren't sore losers and the D's base continues to be demoralized.

Sheila| 8.19.10 @ 10:49AM

Sigh. More fun with numbers and creative accounting practices. Rossi's last attempt was "recounted" until he lost; those who expect any less fraud or box-office chicanery from the Democrats this time around deserve what they get - which will be Murray again. You reap what you sow, people. Decline and fall.

Believer| 8.19.10 @ 10:59AM

If you ask any of the 46% who back Ms. Murray what she's done in the Senate not one in ten can tell you anything about her. AS Murray's helping to spend us into poverty the voters in that Beautiful State are like they are everywhere, too stupid to vote. Sorry to be such a voter basher but thats the way I have become after watching the voters continually vote for the same politics.

Modcon | 8.19.10 @ 11:38AM

- I am also a WA stater. You can addto this King County moronic voting pattern Jim McDermott - socio commie party[ aka as Bagdad Jim] who gets returned to Congress with mind numbing regularity from his west Seattle district with at least 70% of the vote. If only we could declare King County a separate country WA would finally get the right sort of representation- Tea Party Person

Recon| 8.19.10 @ 12:02PM

I'm one of those supposedly 'affluent' white women in WA, and I have NEVER voted for Murray - or Gregoire. And if my husband did I'd throw him out. But the above poster is still correct. Jeebus, they're everywhere. Their idea of political activism is participating in the latest PETA nude photoshoot and they're annoying as h*ll.
Where Gregoire is concerned, I have honestly never met anyone who did vote for her and most of my friends ARE Democrats - it's like a little WA miracle, isn't it? Interestingly, Gregoire passed a law requiring an individual to join the the same union that counted her last round of 'found ballots' if one wanted to work for the gov in WA state shortly after she was elected. Driving the cost of every govt project higher, btw, but guess the taxpayers don't care. Rossi didn't lose anything, his election was stolen and it's not really a secret to anyone.
Liberal policy has decimated our country, and I can't think of one good thing they've brought to the table - it certainly wasn't the CRA. I'm hoping Rossi wins in a landslide, but it's going to take a lot of money to light the fire and control the spin our local media puts on everything he says. WA is truly the lalaliberal heartland, and while they may get the government they deserve - I do NOT WANT IT. My parents, each 89, had their life-savings destroyed. My husband's company is hanging on by their teeth, with most of the workers collecting unemployment 9 months out of the year. My friends are un-employed, or in one case have had their salary reduced by half and insurance discontinued - this with 3 kids and a mortgage. So Patty's big claim to fame is a lending amendment that gaurantees loans with taxpayers money - right after the financial reform 'that will end bailouts 4Evah' but doesn't touch Fannie/Freddie - or Ginnie - a 'jobs' amendment that does nothing but support Obama's 'jobs created or saved' meme, and saving '3,000 teaching jobs', which in reality numbered in oh - dozens. If WA votes this woman in again I'm going to implode. It's hard to miss that this new-found interest in small biz has suddenly come to her attention at election time, since they've spent the last TWO FREAKING YEARS doing absolutely NOTHING to create an environment for them to thrive and HIRE. She has done virtually NOTHING to right our economy, Obama can count on her to vote aye on any bill he slaps on the table as long as pious Patty can get a little favor slipped into it. I've never cared for her particular brand of hypocrisy, but with this administration she's lethal. I hope to God WA can get her out and that we do the same thing in Olympia - it's our own little DC writ smaller.

Jonathon| 8.19.10 @ 3:01PM

Wow, you all never get tired of lying through your teeth do you? What law did Gregoire pass that required anyone (let alone everyone) to join any union? Can you actually name the law? I live in Seattle and I have not had the police at my door asking why I haven't joined this mysterious un-named union yet. What on earth are you talking about?

Bruce | 8.19.10 @ 4:34PM

Well well well ... Jon boy lives in Seattle! Could I not have guessed? And Jon boy doesn't read too well either, it seems. pay attention, Jon boy - this is Recon's quote.."Gregoire passed a law requiring an individual to join the the same union that counted her last round of 'found ballots' if one wanted to work for the gov in WA state shortly after she was elected. "
Where exactly does she allege "everyone" has to join that union, hmm? She doesn't. She says "if you wish to work for the government. And just as an aside ... whether or not one joins or does not join a union is not a police matter - so you can relax about a cop showing up at your door. Unless it's something about that stuff you smoke.

gearjammer| 8.19.10 @ 5:39PM

you are in the minority of your demographic. But. help me out what makes you the exception ? what tv do you watch ? Oprah or Ellen ? Did you flock to the latest Julia Roberts Movie ?

Mackykam| 8.19.10 @ 1:18PM

Gregoire will hand Murray the same illegal votes and voters she received and employed when she stole the election for governor.

Jonathon| 8.19.10 @ 3:02PM

Pardon me, but I don't think this article says anything about Islam. You have kind of a one-track mind don't you?

Harrison | 8.19.10 @ 1:49PM

I hope she takes her tennis shoes and leaves D.C.

2nd Fundamentalist| 8.19.10 @ 2:02PM

This is going to be a close election, probably decided by less than a thousand votes out of ~2 million plus cast. This happened when Maria Cantwell (D) beat incumbent Slade Gorton (R) for her first term in office. Rossi needs to focus on Murray's vote on Obamacare and its bloat added to the deficit. While the Democrats are now stating the new party line of "reduce the deficit," their actions prove them to be charlatans and liars. The question is, do we keep the republic or slide into socialism and oligarchy?

Recon| 8.19.10 @ 2:06PM

And for all our dis-enchanted WA voters - get out and vote anyway. Numbers do count, and the higher they are the harder it is to steal this election too. VOTE. We need to come together whether we had our sights set on Didier or not, or we give this thing to her. Not voting means supporting the status quo and re-electing Patty Murray. Nothing was ever resolved by a failure to ACT, to take the first necessary steps.

Helen| 8.19.10 @ 2:08PM

I have no quarrel with Murray as Senator for my State, and I appreciated her support for Hillary. I am a life-long Democrat/Independent but I voted for Palin in disgust over the DNC illegal vote at the convention. I will vote for Rossi, if only to tip the balance in the Senate and get the DNC out of power. I'm sorry Murray has to take the hit, but sometimes tough love has to take over. Reid and Pelosi have to go.

As for Gregoire, I didn't vote for her last time because she threw Hillary under the bus.

gearjammer| 8.19.10 @ 3:54PM

Helen, wise up. her support for Hillary was a canard. It was meant to placate you and manipulate you into voting for her again. She is not pure-but one of an army of manipulators in the democrats political machine. She is in the party leadership=you can't be too cynical about these people. You can't. And, if Rossi wins keep an eye on him as well. But, I have no doubt he will be invaluable in stopping the one party rule rampage we see now happening. Don't be sorry for anything.

Helen| 8.19.10 @ 7:13PM

I don't think her vote was a canard. She and others held out as long as they could while groupie Gregoire caved early. I won't vote for her or any other Democrat, and I tell them so every chance I get when they send me a plea with a stamped envelope. I don't know where I'll be in the future but right now it's time to take control of Congress. I think the Republicans are learning a lesson too.

They're going to promise to relook the health care law and tweak it, they're going to say they don't side with Obama, they're going to oppose his radical agenda, etc. Then, if/when they are re-elected, they will, of course, reneg on every promise. Don't be fooled by their lies this Nov. Vote them ALL out.

The Dem's are going to avoid Health care at all costs, but you're right - if they have to talk about it, they'll talk about improving/tweeking. The problem is they can't. It's comprehensive legislation which I understand to mean it's all or nothing. It can only be repealed.

As for Murray, she's dumber than a box of rocks, but she'll get all kinds of help because she's a rubberstamp for the Dems. If she can take King, Pierce, and Snohomish Country, she's back in. That's where Didier made his mistake -- he didn't spend a lot of time in the Seattle-Tacoma area.

Can someone provide me an example of Sen. Murray being "stupid" AND incorrect? You forget that turnout in King and Pierce IN THE PRIMARY were incredibly low. This will change come general. Dino has no chance because he is dead wrong. Just like the rest of the rethugs.

Helen| 8.19.10 @ 7:19PM

I wonder if one of the reasons for the low primary turnout in King Co was that the mail in ballots didn't have a flap to protect your signature. With ID theft these days, it would be easy for postal workers to "mislay" a sack or two for friends. I walked my ballot down to a box outside King Co admst bldg and still wondered if it was safe.

I was a college teacher before I retired. I worked 60 to 80 hours every week during the 9 months I taught each year and still felt like I wasn't getting everything done. It was exhausting. I figured out that I was earning between $10 and $20 an hour (not that much when you consider how many years of education I had to complete and how much money I had to pay for my education). It is true that there were some teachers that weren't working very hard (just like in any type of job), but most of us were.

So many false statements here. Patty Murray has done a lot for Washington.
She has worked so hard for Boeing and also for the military and she isn't just giving them lip service like other folks seem to do.
many people flee california not because THEY made a monster but because it was TRULY ruined by prop 13 (which is something right up Eyman's alley)
Basically it made it so that taxes could not be raised. It was MEANT to make it so that old folks could not be taxed out of their homes but of course people take advantage of it.
(Like McCain who after 4 years of not paying tax on a MILLION dollar condo in LaJolla only owed 6,000.00) Why does he get the tax credit on a home he doesn't even live in????
It's sick how the rich take advantage of every little loophole. (after they have created them).
If you don't like how Patty Murray votes...fine, but do yourself a favor before spewing your lies here and find out what she has done.
When you cry 'socialist' , 'stolen election' "acorn' and all of the other propaganda that you have been spoon fed, it just shows that you really don't care about the truth.
Quite sad really.
