The Mosque, the Masks, and the Mayor

As even Dan Brown might tell you, what Cordoba House supporters play down is symbolism.

The controversy over the proposed “Cordoba House” mosque to be built in Manhattan less than two blocks from Ground Zero is almost enough to make me want to collar author Dan Brown so as to ask if Robert Langdon, his fictional Harvard “symbologist,” has time for a good cause.

What Cordoba House supporters play down is symbolism. Any objections to their plans founded on the perceptions of Islamic victory likely to be reinforced by constructing a building of that size for that faith on that particular ground are addressed condescendingly or not at all.

New York mayor Michael Bloomberg and his allies keep saying that one mission of the Cordoba House will be to advance interfaith understanding, which makes me wonder if any other mosque has a similar charter. You could (and should) make the argument that this mosque is special by virtue of its location, although saying so shreds the “nothing to see here” argument advanced by people like Julie Clawson, who chirped in the pages of a blog associated with Sojourners magazine that “Basically it’s the neighborhood YMCA with that weird contemporary ‘church plant’ meeting in the yoga room on Saturday nights.”

Riiiight. Clawson went on to write about fear of the mysterious Other, but it was a pop-psych caricature of the way some Christians treat Muslims, not a mea culpa about her own attitude toward evangelical co-religionists who suffer from what she considers freakish zeal for church planting.

Amid the tsk-tsking about how un-Christian it is to judge any faith by the actions of its “fringe” adherents, there is at least one big question that more people should be asking: how do you figure out where the fringe is in a faith without a central authority?

Is there nothing to do but hope that Cordoba House investors who think this mosque will “amplify the voices of the moderate Muslims” are right? If I may pose another question of the kind that the ever-rumpled Detective Columbo used to ask on his way out the door, as suspects were beginning to breathe more easily: would those investors being right violate the laws of probability?

Some mosque supporters are cheered by the fact that the project leader adheres to Sufi rather than Wahhabi interpretations of the Koran, as though dabbling in the user-friendly end of Islamic theology absolves them of the need to call for an independent audit of the financing on a complex that will include a swimming pool and a 500-seat auditorium in addition to art space and the mosque. Former New York Governor George Pataki is one of the people calling for more transparency in Cordoba House financing, and he can’t be dismissed as a bigoted bogey-man of the Right. Ditto for Rudy Giuliani, who famously rejected a ten-million-dollar donation from the government of Saudi Arabia in October of 2001 because it showed up with a “you had it coming” lecture on the shortcomings of American foreign policy.

Even the name “Cordoba House” ought to give pause. Given the longstanding acrimony between Sunni and Shia Muslim sects, the complex could not be named for Baghdad or Tehran. Any reference to Riyadh would also pose problems, thanks to the well-known Saudi penchant for funding “extremism” elsewhere as a sop to powerful clerics who could otherwise cause political trouble.

In other words, even in cosmopolitan Manhattan, majority-Muslim city names apparently presented daunting image problems for the partners in this development. As a result, project leaders had little in the cupboard to draw from. Nostalgic allusion was perhaps the only option left to them, and there’s the rub: Even if you think that Newt Gingrich is a no-account politico flogging his history degree for the sake of a rhetorical point, the name Cordoba House harks back to an age that ended before Christopher Columbus set sail for the New World, and so we must peer behind the mask of time. Does anyone else see the “Where’s Waldo?” problem in that scenario?

By modern standards, Cordoba was not all that tolerant even at its harmonious zenith, as Dr. Andrew Bostom’s impeccably-researched compendium, The Legacy of Jihad, makes clear. Ibn Abdun (d. 1134) called Jews and Christians “confederates of Satan’s party,” while Ibn Hazm of Cordoba (d. 1064) wrote that Allah has established the infidels’ ownership of their property “merely to provide booty for Muslims.” In other words — and this may come as hard news for certain “symbologists” — there is more evidence for Muslim intolerance than there is for murder by associates of Opus Dei. Dan Brown says “albino assassin,” I say “reconquista.”

Fortunately for all concerned, Christians and Jews don’t have to look back eight hundred years to find examples of peaceful coexistence. Relations between those two faiths have been improving since the pontificate of Pope Pius XII and the lesser-known but inspiring example of brotherhood from the Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish chaplains who sacrificed their lives together when the troop transport Dorchester was torpedoed by a German submarine in 1943.

History seems lost on Mayor Bloomberg and his allies, who have nothing to say about Catholic pharmacists forced to dispense abortificiants, but don’t hesitate to smear mosque opponents as bigots opposed to freedom of religion. Some pundits also accuse the critics of Cordoba House of “renouncing pluralism” or trying to confine religions to ghettos. These shameless exercises in motive-finding lack corroborating evidence.

But Mayor Bloomberg doesn’t have to win the argument; he just has to buy time for the banks and the backhoes. He can frame Cordoba House construction in terms of tolerance, or religious freedom, or jobs for New Yorkers, or private property rights, and almost everything he says on the subject counts as misdirection, the political equivalent of breaking into “Oh look! A squirrel!” or (better yet) “Hey soul sister, Ain’t that Mister Mister on the radio?”

I said this was a fight over symbols. In that respect, it’s not unlike the controversy over the curiously crescent-shaped memorial proposed for the field in Pennsylvania where heroic airline passengers foiled another set of hijackers on September 11, 2001. What’s needed now is not another mindless swipe at “bigotry” or an essay about the notably un-Islamic virtues of separating of church and state, but attention to the niceties of neighborly behavior: “Sense and Sensibility,” you might say. And while “Professor Robert Langdon” and his academic discipline are fictional, any number of advice columnists, marketing executives, liturgists, and drill sergeants know about symbols, also. Perhaps they — we — can help Cordoba House backers extricate themselves from the mother of all faux pas.

The State Dept. will pay for the fund raising tour of the Imam who wants to build the mosque at Ground Zero. He will visit Riyadh, S.A., Quater, and Dubai, among other countries. After several days of phone calls and e-mail inquiries, the State Dept. answered, "we need to get clearance to comment" No denial was forthcoming. The Imam already has a mosque 10 blocks from the sone he wants to build....

...evidently Rodham is unfamiliar with the concept of "separation of church and state"

Seems to me that a key part of wanting the mosque at this site is that visitors to the WTC site will hear the "call to prayer" wafting toward their ears several times each day. A call of triumph over the infidels, and one that we cannot tune out.

I would love to see it blown up after it is built. That would be a wonderful tribute to their "victory." There can be no peace with a group or religion who inherantly believe they are superior to all others. Therefore, we shouldn't seek to placate them. We should allow them to reap what they sow.

When it is time to actually start the backhoes and roll the cement trucks, I wonder how many Americans, union members et al, will be building this abomination so close to the site where so many of their countrymen died at the hands of other "peaceful" practitioners of Islam? Once again, I think we will see that the average working person will be the the one who steadfastly stops this madness in its tracks while the idiot politicians pat themselves on the back for being so tolerant, as all of Islam watches and chuckles at our stupidity for participating in their symbolic victory. At least, that is my hope that no matter what the pay, they will refuse to build and that picketers will stand outside every day, reminding them of the blood money they will be taking to build the hatching place of perhaps the next plot against us. Let the building not begin.

The battle for the building of the Cordoba Mosque is over. Mayor Bloomberg's speech last week sealed the deal. The governing elites, the monied class, and academia dug in thier heels and will not budge. The mosque will go up even before the new foundation for the Freedom Towers is even dug.

The pattern here is nothing new. Muslims in Europe and in other places used the same methods. The idea is to put host nation's on both the rhetorical and moral defensive. Opponent's of the mosque turn out looking like hypocrites and bullies. CAIR and other front organizatins will ensure that the narrative of "moderate" muslims, freedom of religion, and interfaith diaologue are stressed within the MSM and blogesphere. The idea is to paint Islam as the victim here.

Of course lost in all of this will be some rather obvious points. First, there are already several mosques in Manhatten and New York. Muslims are free to build any new mosques where ever they wish. The exception is the current location. Secondly, it is the Muslims who insist on building the mosque so close to Ground Zero. And if the oppurtunity arose where they could build it even closer they would. It is the Imans who are being the agressors here. The question is why do they insist? If they had the best interest of the non-Muslims at heart, we wouldn't be having this conversation. They have planned out-reach all right. That outreach will be a one way street.

And once the mosque is finished, you can be assured that it will be opened with great fanfare. Photos will go out for all to see. And the symbolism of the photo-ops will not be missed by Muslims around the world. Just think of it: at the exact place where Muslim terrorist murdered thousands of innocent civilians, the Jewish Mayor, Catholic dignitaries and other "infidels" will be celebrating the opening of a mosque. Muslims will not see this as an ecumenical gesture. They will celebrate it as a victory in their long running war with the West.

And after the hoopla and pagentry ends, their real work of Islamifying Lower Manhatten will begin.

The simple fact is throughout the Muslim world, a mosque at Ground Zero will not be viewed as a sign of American tolerance, but of American weakness. It will not be viewed as a commemoration of the victims, but as a monument to a Muslim victory, and a monument to the eight great martyrs who sacrificed their lives to strike a blow against the Great Satan.

Imagine the response if a group of Christian terrorists blew up the Dome of the Rock, and then proposed to build a church--sorry, a "Christian community center"--on the site.

Leaving aside the difficulty of finding true Christian terrorists, what Christian group would even consider building a church on the site of an atrocity committed by Christians? But, unlike our Muslim brethren, we have a sense of guilt, a sense of shame, and a sense of propriety.

And yes, all the middle eastern countries will contribute huge sums, and there will be little American labor working on it. But then there's always the illegals. After all the wars we have fought for freedom, after all the millions of Americans who have died Cordoba will signify that they died for nothing.

Just as Pearl Harbor symbolizes the beginning of WWII and the Battleship Missouri sitting at anchor notes the victorious end. The World Trade Towers and Cordoba House will symbolize the beginning of the Holy War and the final victory achieved by Islam over the last Western Nation that once had the courage to stand up to tyranny and fascism.

The beginning of the end of this Country began on 9/11 2001 and the war will end on 9/11 2011 or a date thereof as the muezzin calls the faithful to prayer within the same ground of the thousands of murdered Americans souls who call a gaping unhealed pit home.

This Nation didn’t even have guts to rebuild the towers to symbolize to those who desire to destroy our Western way of life by declaring, “We will not be cowed by any man, religion, or nation”. I'm surprised that Mayor Bloomberg didn't invite Cordoba House to be built on the site of the World Trade Towers.

Actually, while "symbologist" is a made up title, the concepts and scholarly work that would be the foundation of a similar discipline do exist:

Look up: semiotics, and especially "work group semiotics".

Study semiotics for a few months, and you'll have a better understanding of political argument, and a fundamental grasp of the basics of modern propaganda systems.

I have rarely ever sent comments to online articles. American Spectator is awesome and I cannot not add my voice.
Everyone is so much about freedom this and freedom that. We should allow them all the freedom we have.
I will stick to the topic of freedom. Lets look at the freedoms they allow themselves as Muslims. Not extremist just Muslims. They can change their faith if they choose too!.....Oh wait no they can not. They let women walk around without covering their heads and or face!.....Oh wait no they do not. We can show pictures of the prophet Mohamed!...OH WAIT we can not! They are very tolerant of other faiths!....Oh wait no they are not.(Look up hateful verses in the Koran on the internet). They cannot rape!.....Oh wait a divorced couple was involved in a case in New Jersey. The Moroccan husband repeatedly raped his ex wife but because it is a custom for women to submit a judge voted in favor to the husband to refuse a restraining order. Sharia law is being demanded in majority neighborhoods in England and other countries!
Laws completely separate from the governing laws of the land. The new financial regulations just passed by the White House has a line stating that it will recognize Sharia law. If you are gay go to Tehran and walk down the street with your lover and see what happens to you. Send aid workers to help in the aftermath of destruction and see what the Taliban does(like this weekend).
We are giving up our freedoms little by little to a majority of the world that thinks we are villains.
Not just extremist. Go to Europe and get a feel of how the European Union feels about us.
The whole Muslim world danced in the streets when the Towers came down. Not just a small pocket of people. Whole cities did this.
The religion is not tolerant what so ever. The moderates within have the best vantage point possible. They do nothing and when the extremist win they are citizens of the new Muslim world order. We as US citizens are afraid to say anything because we will be accused of anti Muslim rhetoric by CAIR and other Muslim mouth pieces . Which shuts us up very quickly.
They speak of freedom and rights while we give up our sovereign rights as a free society. Let the left do this and there will be no stopping this juggernaut(meaning Islam) will not stop till it get a tax from the whole world for being non Muslims.

They assume that Muslims see things the same way that liberal infidels do. If we point out, with Muslims' own words and actions, how Muslims really think--if we actually understand the Muslim mind--the leftopaths screech that we're bigoted.

C.’s Pentagon complex was one of the targets on 9/11 – even Detroit, with the largest Muslim population of any American city (mostly in the suburb of Dearborn), had a bomber riding an airplane around Christmas – although, as is normal with Detroit, the bomb lacked quality control and the bomb maker was incompetent. Still, Red State cities and their citizens don’t seem to attract your typical out for destruction terrorists with the frequency New York City does.

Is it because the Big Apple is an American icon - but, if so, a symbol of what exactly? Financial corruption with Wall St’s wealthy tentacles wrapped tightly around Congress? Lots of those hated Jews live there? Overpriced merchandise in 5th Ave stores complete with snooty clerks? Too much casual sex as “Sex in the City” assures us is the norm within NYC?

Maybe one of these reasons, maybe all. Whatever the reason, New York is taking no chances on remaining at the top of Osama’s “Must Bomb” list. For example, they quickly turned down the chance to host a public trial for our captured terrorists – no one can accuse New Yorkers of being stupid, even if they seem a little crazy at times. And, historically, appeasement does work from time to time, but not all that often – the Mongols in Genghis Khan’s army often slaughtered every man, woman and child in the cities which surrendered to them. New York is the exception to the rule however, New Yorkers will quickly tell you that’s always been the case in the Big Apple, so we’ll see just how special they are.

The Story of the Mosque, the Ruling Class, and the Country Class

Once upon a time a bunch of Islamists decided to raise a mosque at a site where they had murdered thousands of innocent Americans. When the Country Class said, "No Way are you going to build a Victory Mosque where you murdered our people," the Ruling Class said to the Country Class, "You ignorant rubes, don't you believe in freedom of religion - the mosque will be built - but no Synagogues or Christian Cathedrals need apply." So the permits were issued and the Jihadists chortled with glee.

But then there was trouble. Americans couldn't stop their Ruling Class from giving the go-ahead, but all the workers were from the Country Class - and they refused to work on the project. So the Ruling Class brought in illegal aliens to do the work. When the Country Class objected, the Ruling Class said, "You ignorant rubes, you just hate people with brown skin. We are not going to enforce your ignorant immigration laws. And anyone who tries to enforce them will be sued and driven to bankruptcy and ruin." So the mosque was built.

After it was built, imams came and started chanting "Death to America" and distributing bomb-making manuals. The Country Class said, "Hey, you said this was going to be an 'interfaith center' to help heal the wounds from when these Jihadists murdered so many of us." But the Ruling Class said, "You ignorant rubes, don't you believe in freedom of speech? Anyone who says anything critical of these imams will be arrested for hate crimes." And so the Mosque became a national center for Jihadists to plan their attacks on America.

Then planners from the Mosque succeeded in developing bombs that blew away much of Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington. The Country Class said, "Why didn't you listen to us?' But the Ruling Class said, "You ignorant rubes, don't you know if you weren't such a bunch of bigots the peace-loving Muslims would have been your friends? Now anyone who objects to Islam or Sharia will be taken to the new detention centers we have set up."

But the detention centers weren't nearly big enough for all the people in the Country Class. They were, however, big enough to hold all the people in the Ruling Class. So the Country Class formed the 'Ignorant Rubes Brigade' and set to work. That is how the Ruling Class became the Imprisoned Class, the Country Class became the Self-Governing Class, and the Jihadists became the Defeated Class. And the Defeated Class was told that if they ever attacked us again they would soon become the Former Citizens of the Smoking Piles of Radioactive Rubble known as the Islamic Empire. And so America and Israel lived happily ever after - but the Jihadists and the Ruling Class, not so much.

Rarely am I ever so appalled with humanity, but this article has pushed my disgust to an unprecedented extent. I have tried to excuse the hypocritical Christian for long enough, but to actually prohibit another religion from its Constitutional right to practice freely, its faith, is unbearable. That Cordoba symbolism clearly shows the blatant ignorance of Patrick O'Hannigan, as that area was conquered by Christians from the Muslim rule, and these "benevolent, beautiful Christians" were far more intolerant to faith and difference than the Muslims ever were or ever will be. The disrespect and atrocities displayed by the Christians of the time are no different than what is happening today. Though that is not to say all Christians are as horrible as the people who agree with this article, those are no Christians at all. Islam is closer to Christianity than is Judaism, far more similar than Hinduism or Budhism or Paganism. But you continue to promote prejudice and talk about bloody symbolism, like an ignorant fool. Let's hope you are not the symbol for the Christian faith, for if that's the case, I'll abandon my Catholic roots in favor of the Islam faith

You hit the nail on the head, NavyBrat. It was not the terrorists who convinced me that Islam is a hopeless and hideous parody of religion: it was the moderates. After 911 I waited for Muslims to condemn terror and take back their religion. All they had to offer was what I call the "Street Gang Defense"; no unambiguous condemnation of the act, just saying 'this wasn't us.'

Ifr a bunch of Catholics were doing this, I would expect my leaders to do a lot more than just say it wasn't us. I would expect a clear condemnation and excommunication of anyone involved in such terror. But then I started reading the Koran and the Haddith. The stunning fact is that the Jihadists have a legitimate claim to be Mohammed's most faithful adherents. Islam teaches murder, mayhem, rape and torture.

The problem is not terror. It is Islam. If it is to be reformed, it must come from within. But until I see unified fatwas against terror and terrorists, followed by action; unambiguous condemnation of Hamas and Hezbollah, and genuine respect for the rights of all both in and out of Islam, I will remain convinced that Islam itself must be treated as a hostile power at war with us; not a religion.

They appealed to the head of their philosophy department, who was in the audience - and he rather sadly told them it was an accurate, if incomplete synopsis. They were stunned that westerners were not the villains here.

von Hildebrand insists that Islam is nothing more than a Christian heresy that has mutated. I don't agree, but he certainly has a point. Certainly, Islam does NOT envision man as being created in God's own image, as both Christianity and Judaism teach. In fact, in Islam, man is forever alienated from God and no relationship is possible except slave and master. It is why Islam has such a contempt for human life. Man has no inherent dignity and no communion with a loving God. Even then, their god is arbitrary and capricious. One who has been an obedient little Jihadist his whole life, blowing up innocents, raping infidels, torturing and murdering infidel infants, will, should he be profaned with pig's blood at the moment of his death, be barred from Islamic heaven.

Of course, I don't believe you are Catholic anyway. You teach the same sort of phony, lying history and theology that are all the rage on college campuses these days under the rubric of 'Islamic Studies.'
