Obama’s Immigration Power Play

What the amnesty memos and the Arizona lawsuit reveal about this administration’s views of immigration enforcement — and the will of the people.

Last week, the Obama administration got Clinton-appointed Judge Susan Bolton to at least temporarily throw out key provisions of Arizona’s immigration law. Within 24 hours came more evidence that they weren’t done eviscerating immigration enforcement yet.

That proof came in the form of an astonishing internal memo outlining ways the United States Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) could effectively legalize at least tens of thousands of illegal immigrants even if Congress fails to enact amnesty. Some would be granted resident status with the USCIS simply giving them green cards. Others would be allowed to evade deportation, possibly indefinitely.

“In the absence of Comprehensive Immigration Reform, CIS can extend benefits and/or protections to many individuals and groups by issuing new guidance and regulations,” said the memo, which was prepared by four senior officials from different parts of USCIS for the agency’s director. Two of the memo’s authors are Obama appointees, as is USCIS head Alejandro N. Mayorkas.

Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) made the 11-page document public last Thursday, arguing in a public statement, “This memo gives credence to our concerns that the administration will go to great lengths to circumvent Congress and unilaterally execute a back door amnesty plan.” In June, Grassley and six other senators sent President Obama a letter asking him to deny rumors that his underlings were contemplating amnesty by executive fiat.

Now we have good reason to believe the rumors were true. One proposal contained in the memo was that the USCIS grant “parole in place,” which comes with a work permit and the right to apply for a green card, to various illegal immigrants. Another suggestion was to give “deferred action,” delaying deportation indefinitely and preserving eligibility to apply for a work permit, to illegal aliens who would have benefited from the DREAM Act.

That would be the same DREAM Act, incidentally, that Congress has repeatedly failed to pass, much as it has shot down broader-based amnesty proposals.

Finally, the memos’ authors suggest that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) could simply stop issuing the “notice to appear” letters that begin the deportation process. The only exception would be in cases where the illegal alien is found to have “significant negative immigration or criminal history.”

The exposure of this memo understandably generated controversy, which the administration was eager to tamp down. A hastily issued USCIS statement insisted that the memos were just a draft and that “nobody should mistake deliberation and exchange of ideas for final decisions.”

“To be clear,” the statement continued, “DHS will not grant deferred action or humanitarian parole to the nation’s entire illegal immigrant population.” As the Church Lady used to say, “Well, isn’t that special?”

Even if the memo merely shows mid-level bureaucrats engaging in a brainstorming session about how to undermine the immigration laws they are being paid to uphold, it captures the essence of this administration’s approach to immigration enforcement. Criminal prosecutions of employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants are down and worksite raids have virtually stopped. The DHS official running the Office of Detention and Removal Operations has admitted the administration is, as a matter of policy, trying to avoid arresting illegals.

According to one report, through May administrative arrests were down 81 percent from 2008, criminal arrests down 67 percent, indictments are down 73 percent, and convictions down 75 percent. “I think there have been very few operations that have generated arrests of undocumented workers,” David Venturella, the acting director in charge of such operations, was quoted as saying at an Urban Institute event.

But what about reports that the Obama administration is deporting record numbers of illegal immigrants? Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told the Washington Post that they planned to deport 400,000 people this fiscal year, up 10 percent from 2008 and 25 percent from 2007.

Like their predecessors in the generally lax Bush administration, Obama’s immigration henchmen can be counted on to periodically ratchet up enforcement when doing so will aid the call for “comprehensive immigration reform.” Most of this uptick reflects a recent effort to identify illegal aliens who have committed other crimes.

Yet neither the deportations of criminal aliens nor the ballyhooed audits of companies that hire workers with bogus Social Security numbers really turn off the jobs magnet luring illegal immigrants into this country. Remember: as amnesty advocates are always fond of reminding us, we cannot deport every illegal immigrant in the United States. The main goal of attrition through enforcement is to entice large numbers of illegals to in effect deport themselves.

Focusing on the worst criminals among the illegal population — and relatively light civil fines of employers who flunk their audits — while giving de facto amnesty to everyone else will not reduce the number of illegal immigrants here to a manageable level. It will merely allow the Obama administration to appear tough while actually undermining attrition through enforcement.

States like Arizona have learned that serious immigration enforcement is a dirty job the federal government won’t do — and one that the Obama administration won’t let anyone else perform, either. Even if they must rely on unaccountable federal judges and bureaucrats, it is amnesty or bust, the will of the people and their elected representatives be damned.

I'm sick to death of the political class giving lip service to immigration enforcement. This administration in particular is so blantantly anti-American and wanting these illegal voters to pull the lever for Obama in 2012 that they'll do just about anything against the will of the American people to assure it. These people must be voted out and thwarted in every way because they don't give a damn about bringing this country down to third world status. Obama = Chavez in my humble opinion.

Bush and Rove were just as bad, but at least they didn't try to sidestep Congress. This "gangster government" (Michael Barone's excellent term) thinks czars and regulations are all they need. Vote them all out.

Tim Moore, who played the Kingfish in the early 50's two-year TV version of "Amos 'n' Andy" produced by the Hal Roach studios, is indeed dead, but the series survives in DVD collections. The show was principally cast by a stupendously talented Harlem troupe, and provided early TV access to many talented black performers, including Nick O'Demus, Spencer Williams, Johnny Lee, Amanda Randolph, Alvin Childress, and the magnificent Ernestine Wade, who played the sharp-tongued and long-suffering Sapphire opposite Tim Moore's George ("Kingfish"). (And who, in an interview 30 years after the demise of the show, dismissed the race-hustling critics of the show as silly.)

The shiftless Kingfish, the gullible Andy, and the incomparable and perennially disbarred Algonquin J. Calhoun are among the few truly great comic characters in the checkered history of the TV sit-com, revelatory of universal human foibles. The straight roles (judges, policemen, rich and proper uncles, etc.) were almost all filled by black performers, and many of the white performers were seedy con artists (used car salesmen, get-rich-quick schemers, and the like). None of the jokes and one-liners turned specifically on race, and the unspoken norm was color-blindness long before the term came into use regarding race relations--and long, long before the term became an object of scorn among race hustlers.

So how is it "fortunate" that "Amos 'n' Andy" is off the air? Or do you know what the hell you're talking about?

Due to the known character traits of the spll / jihadist dhimocrats, namely: shallow intellect, short-sightedness, ego-maniacal and a complete inability to recognize the truth (much less grasp it), they are unable to see or for want of an unspoken agenda, unable to solve the illegal alien problem. Common sense makes it obvious that if you secure the borders and fine employers who hire illegals and confiscate the property of illegals (as is done with other criminals) you will solve several pressing problems. Unemployment rate would be cut in half and more tax dollars would flow to the treasury simply because American citizens would replace the illegals who currently are not paying income taxes; the violence in Mexico would diminish due to the drug business not being as lucrative (volumetric-ally), the money that was being saved from not being spent on social programs could be used to further strengthen border security.

Well spoken thug? As in "er.....uhhhh.....er", face reality if at all possible, at best B O can read a teleprompter.

I agree and I would not put it past Obam to sign an executive order to legalize all illegal citizens. And I'll bet the amnesty would not cover green card holders who are white and who have paid for their green cards and done everything the right way. Case inpoint, look at how they are deporting the British couple in Maine over some small technicality who have a small business there but have lost everything as a result of the deportation proceedings. And its all just to get the votes.

And I still cannot get over the foolishness of Bush-Rove who thought they could win the hearts and eventually the votes of the illegals with an amnesty-lit charade that would have eventually been turned into full amnesty. They left the borders wide open hoping so we could get cheap labor and then get all those votes forever and ever.... What a sham and it was bound to lead to the Democrats getting the lion's share of the illegal votes once amnesty was granted. Hhuman nature being what it is, Democrats are better at giving away not only the candy but the whole store and Bush-Rove somehow could not see or anticipate that. Pathetic!

If cops are out doing their job, would they assign troops to ride along? Do they have that many people? What if the troops refuse to obey orders? In other words, the Governor of Arizona should tell the White House to stuff it, and go about it's business of enforcing it's own legal laws.

I find it quite ironic that President Obama is using the Department of Homeland Security to implement this unconstitutional scheme. I think the GOP members of Congress should demand that she present herself before the appropriate committees. There, she must answer whether this plan or anyother plan is afoot that would illegally give undocumented aliens amnesty without congressional consent. If she denies it, and we find out later she lied Congress should then prosecute her and all other bureaucrats for contempt. And if the trail leads to the WH, impeachments proceedings should not be out of the question.

Estimates of the number of illegal immigrants range from about 12 to 20 million, making a mockery of the rule of law. Instead of acting to contain this invasion, Obama is waging war against Arizona and all American citizens. He is encouraging contempt for the law instead of enforcing the law.

How many terrorists from around the world have infiltrated the U.S. by walking across the Mexican border? How many Mexican drug dealers are operating all over the U.S.? How many hundreds of $$$ billions in public services do the illegals consume, without paying any taxes?

While none of these texts deal directly with the Imigration Legal or Illegal problem, they do tell the Strategy, Tactics and methods of the OBNA. We are living in what the old NAM days called, a war of Action Fronts, Attrition, and as Mao put it, the middle of the Long March. OBNA has to secure his legacy. Just when you thought that the appetite of this administration to do harm to this country was slumbering satiated in a cave somewhere after having gorged itself on the most unpopular agenda in American history along comes Obama’s back door illegal alien amnesty.

Anyone remotely aware of what this administration has been up to in the year and a half of its existence knew that Team Obama would try to pull some version of an amnesty sooner rather than later. This sort of thing is, after all, deeply imbedded in their DNA. But do the Obamanoids understand, or care, that any sort of amnesty would bring in many more illegals and that this ever growing and never assimilated mass of people could cause this country great harm? The answer is they are probably salivating over the prospect of America's deconstruction--they are working hard enough on it as it is--happening on their watch. Putting all the broken pieces formerly called America back together again as a European Frankenstein would delight them to no end.

Trolling for Hispanic votes on the strength of half-baked identity theory politics may sound off the wall to most Americans, but it is makes absolutely perfect sense to the average Obamanoid.

It's even worse than you presume.

First, if the 12 to 20 million illegals in the country now do indeed get amnesty by hook or by crook isn't it reasonable to assume that they'll want to earn minimum wage just like everybody else? So, when these illegals get amnesty most of them are going directly onto unemployment. That's unemployment for ninety-nine weeks.

Next, if the 12 to 20 million illegals in the country get amnesty isn't it reasonable to assume that they'll want to relocate their families to the US too? Mom and dad, the grandparents and the kids and the like. Seems to me that the 12 to 20 million number all of a sudden becomes 70 to 80 million if not 100 million.

Of course mom and dad and granny and grampa are going to need socialist security benifits for support. The fact that they never paid into the program will be ignored. Either that or they'll just bop on down to the city hall or wherever and get their food stamp debit card. There'll probably be a riot or two or five or nine that there isn't enough public housing available for these folks to move into and then destroy.

Now, the folks that are currently employing the 12 to 20 million illegals in this country don't want to pay the minimum wage for tomato picking and the like so we're going to get an additional 12 to 20 million illegals to replace the 12 to 20 million illegals that got amnesty and we begin the process again.

Meanwhile, we keep extending unemployment benifits so there is no incentive at all for an unemployed American to take a job picking tomatoes or shingling a roof or whatever other hard manual labor job is available to put food on the table.

I paid for college by shingling roofs, working on farms in tobacco and hay, painting houses and the like. See, it was like this, I was too stupid to realize that if I sat on my ass in the house that the government would pay my college bills for me. Now that I'm fifty years old and my back is ruined I get to pay the illegals to sit on their asses and get their benifits along with the legal Americans that bought houses that they can't afford and have credit card debt that they can't pay off.

Somebody please explain to me why it is that I'm going to work tonight at midnight again?

I say let President Obama keep doing as he's doing. Let the criminal politicians continue with their crime. Like my pappy always told me when I was a kid growing up, "Hell ain't even half full yet." Vote in November? What for.

At least after the crash and the government and government dependant class have done the only one truely useful thing that they can do which is starve to death after burning every urban center to the ground to show how upset they are then perhaps, just perhaps the honest and decent people left over can rebuild the world.

I am Democrat angry over decades of massive unending immigration.
immigration is a TAX on the working poor here now and the mostly frraudulent worker visa programs help to steal the few middle class jobs left.
the only people that favor immigration are those that benefit from it and pass the socuial costs onto the communities. The republicans are just as bad, bush was our fist MEXICAN president!

We wouldn't need the Dream Act if in 1996 a cynical President Clinton signed two flawed "immigration reform bills" replete with contradictions and excesses saying they could be fixed after his reelection. But here we are 14 years later, immigration laws are a mess and we can't even fix a small flaw on behalf of undocumented American children without the bigots throwing a hissy fit.

In November 2010 the American people will rightly push back against Obama's socialist plans. The fools who voted for "Hopey changey" apparently didn't realize they were putting the Bosheviks in charge. Americans love their freedom and will use the ballot box accordingly.

But if the bigots hijack the resistance and turn it into another anti-latino jihad, their victory will be short lived. Try to imagine winning the presidency in 2012 without carrying Texas or Florida. Remember California. It used to be a GOP state that gave us Ronald Reagan. Now its reliably Democrat!

If it's so great, it should be passed by Congress and signed into law. The executive branch should not behave as if it passed anyway when in fact numerous Congresses have declined to enact it when given the opportunity.

Personally, I might be inclined to support something along the lines of the DREAM Act if first the illegal population is reduced to a manageable level. But it would still constitute giving legal status -- that is, an amnesty -- to people who are illegal immigrants or children of illegal immigrants. That's why I described it as such.

Let's all start refusing to show our ID to the TSA at the airport. Violates our rights. If they won't let us on the plane, refuse to use the airlines. So why not file a small claims lawsuit against their employer if their is a pattern of hiring illegal aliens?

The small claims limit in my state is $5000. Identity theft could be their achilles heal.

You all don't get it. The solution to illegal immigration, is legal immigration. Lower the cost to apply for a green card, and approve those who apply.

The current 13 trillion dollar U.S. Federal Debt is nothing compared to the 60+ trillion in unfunded liabilities. All that can only be funded with an economy well over twice the size of today's economy.

The reason Bush was lax, Obama is lax, is they understand there is no political will to legalize millions of workers at the same time - there is no hope for the future, unless someday our workforce is twice the size it is today.

The poor economy, we hope, doesn't last forever - but population trends, they will be difficult to correct, if we make the wrong choices today.

If that population goes to Mexico - Mexico is the winner. No two ways about it.

We already have a generous legal immigration system that admits over 1 million new green card holders every year. A bigger economy doesn't = a better economy. The immigrants getting green cards each year and the illegal alien population have on average low earnings; thus their contributions on average are below the level needed to make a net contribution. They will for the most part join the 50% of Americans who don't pay any income tax.

And you haven't even considered quality of life or environmental issues that come with population increases.

Under your theory, the biggest economy is the best. Why don't we then send green cards to all of India and all of China?

To understand the illegal immigration problem, one must see it from the illegal immigrant's and business leader's standpoint. Illegals who do remain here for long periods, enjoy the best of both worlds. Thier income is far higher than in Mexico. And thier position as an illegal virtually guarentees them work year around if they so choose. They possess stolen IDs, free-legal aid if they ever need it; free health care through Medicaid, and they are below the radar. Most get paid under the table or in cash. And most chose to spend part of the year living in Mexico, where the dollar is still King. In the urban areas of the US where illegals flourish there are Hispanic newspapers, TV and radio stations; underground banking facilities that offer loans, pre-paid cell phones, check cashing, and even mortgages (in the last market bubble, illegals in the Southwest made up 25% of the subprime loans).

For buisnesses, there are substantial savings in using illegals. Their employee costs are a third when compared to legal employee; businesses pocket vey large savings.

In the end, less than 5% of the illegals here will take up any kind of amnesty. For they know thier real value resides in thier illegal status.

The federal debt has nothing to do with a labor deficit... it has everything to do with a government that cannot control spending. Is your credit card debt a function of not earning enough? Only when you spend what you cannot afford or earn. That's why card issuers cut you off, before you get to the point where you can't even pay the interest on your debt.

The hope for the future is to reign in the federal government and the spending resulting from entitlement programs. The first step is educating people in basic economics, history and the philosophy of natural law and individual rights.

If we legalize the illegals to get their money to pay our debt, what would government do to get their votes? Ahh... give them a piece of the entitlement pie. That's like getting a pay raise then asking for an increased credit limit instead of paying down your debt. Then we'll need more illegals to work to pay their bills. And congress will need their votes... then we'll need more immigrants...

Simply put, they don't have the means, particularly weapons. Only the Venezuelan armed forces, the police and the paramilitary units are armed; all other weapons have been confiscated. Unlike Nicaragua, where the Contras were externally trained and armed, Venezuelans don't have such support. Moreover, there are many, if not most that have accused the Cubans, for example, of not rising up to fight the communist dictators. In fact, at least 5,000 of them did in the Escambray mountains in central Cuba, not far from the Bay of Pigs, from the time after Castro took over in 1959, until 1964. Lacking both internal and external support, as the former had been rounded up and either executed, imprisoned in concentration camps, or forced into exile, they were ultimately overcome by 50, 000 communist troops, fully equiped, trained and led by the Soviets and former socialist Spanish Republican cadres. All weapons confiscated from private citizens, and continuously hounded by the extensive repressive apparatus in Cuba, including but not limited by the ever present in every block, CDR (Comites para la Defensa de La Revolucion), but also internal security agencies such as G-2, etc., there is also an extensive network of undercover snitches, whose victims fill at least 300 prisons, where prisoners only dream of being treated as well as those by the U.S. in Gitmo, if you get my meaning. Amnesty means "forgive and forget". A path to legal residence for some here illegally is no "amnesty". See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amnesty. It's precisely what America has always done with immigrants already here when it revamped immigration laws in 1790 (2 years residence for citizenship), 1795 (5 years residence for citizenship), 1798 (14 years residence for citizenship): decide which new Americans to accept and which ones to reject.

After the post Civil War 14th amendment defining US citizens as "persons born here or naturalized", immigration restrictions imposed other requirements or racial restrictions. But every revamp addressed the humanitarian side of the thousands who had resided in the US long enough to be "Americans". The 1917 Act protected those returning to an unrelinquished domicile of 7 years and grandfathered in those here since 1902. That date was repeatedly updated through 1986, for aliens here by 1982.

My point is that fixing our immigration mess requires the support of every American ethnic group. America was settled from Soth to North, not East to West. American cities named Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Antonio, etc, were not a peculiar fashion. They were named by the Hispanic Americans who settled there in the 16th and 17th century, and whose history is denied by bigots who prey on the ignorant. St. Augustine, Fl was founded long before Williamsburg, Va. Why is Williamsburg . Ditto Santa Fe, NM. Are these not American cities?

Efforts to rebuild the ethnic mix prevalent in parts of North America, mid-19th century, will eventually fail aswe Americans come to our senses on immigration and devise a policy that suits all Americans, not just those whose ancestors arrived between the 16th and 19th century from Northern Europe. But we'll have to do this while trudging through all the prejudice and misinformation being dished out by racial supremacist of all political persuasions.

We have rules on legal immigration in place that for political reasons are being ignored. These laws are clear and would be effective if there was a will to enforce them. That we should defend our borders is not an option, it is mandatory. Use of a tactic which says we will enforce border security only if we include amnesty measures is a dispicable act of holding the welfare of American citizens hostage to a political ideology.
The federal government is tasked with the enforcement of laws passed by congress, not with a selectivety standard based on what is politically expediant per an administrations voting demographic.
There is no need to negotiate through this congress new immigration policy. There is every need to merely enforce, in full measure, existing laws and to make objective decisions on behalf of American citizens, not foriegn invaders.

A court decision in Virginia appears to be the opposite of the one in Arizona. It will be interesting haow two apparently conflicting views play out.
If nothing else it will high lite in the news this issue and that Arizona is not alone in this struggle.
Adding to the mix the statement by an Arizona sheriff to the effect that The Federal Government is " our enemy " which apparently is also getting play. I think it is a good rather than abad thing that more people will see the role of the BHO in messing up our borders and the political angle on immigration.

The first obligation of a nation, if its citizsens may legitimately call it a nation, is the maintenance of its borders. Should it fail in this primary, and I should say primeval obligation, then citizenship becomes instantly meaningless. If a person who violates American borders may then, based on his illegal act, declare himself the beneficiary of every right that is the legacy of American citizenship, then American citizenship means nothing whatever in a national context.

Only nations have citizens. However, where anarchy reigns, the anarchist claims citizenship by an accident of geography. The anarchists' reasoning is psychotically circular. He who is here is an American. Why? Because he is here of course. What more do you need to know? Anarchy, therefore, is the practice of obdurate lawlessness; it is the credo of the citizen or the illegal alien who believes that his personal and emotional self-declaration of a right to live, and vote and collect welfare in the United States, is by itself sufficient to confer upon himself American citizenship. No other authority need be declared; certainly not the law or the American Constitution from which it is derived.

The self-declared citizen need not wish to live his life in America, learn the language or assimilate in any respect whatever to the American culture--indeed, he may be one of a mob who recently protested criticism of his self-declaration of citizenship, by waving a Mexican flag, emblazoned with the likeness of the murderer Che Guevara, in the faces of Arizona policemen who were trying to keep order.

Because the anarchist argument is logically and rationally absurd, he loads his demand for citizenship with, emotional, insipid or hateful responses to those who appeal to the Constitution and the rule of law. The essence of the anarchists’ delema is that illegal aliens, as a matter of law, are law breakers, and therefore have no right, and certainly no constitutional right to demand American citizenship.

Logic and reason, however, are of no force or effect in the debate. Emotion and intimidation, rage and hate alone hold sway. The protagonist of illegal immigration and therefore anarchy carefully avoids a discussion of an ancient International and national law that declares his claim irrational, and therefore void. He resorts instead to red herrings and fantastic theories he conjures from thin air.

For example, he argues endlessly that the presence of lawbreakers in the U.S. is infinitely beneficial to U.S. citizens; that lawbreakers are careful to take only those jobs unequivocally rejected by the millions of Americans now out of work; that in any event Americans object to his defiance of the law only because they are racists, bigots, and xenophobes.

Yes, yes, we have heard all this before. But tell us, upon what legal and constitutional grounds do you claim the right to invade our borders and demand citizenship? Finally, as the anarchist arguments are illogical, unlawful, and indeed, supercilious, the aliens' protagonists allege that the real issue is "humaneness" to which the present Democrat administration, its president and a federal court have responded with a most supine admiration.

President O’Bama, having first failed to humiliate the sovereign state of Arizona into surrender, then sued to compel it to his presidential will. Together, the President, a federal judge and most Democrats engaged in a collective hatred that is also known as bigotry, this time against a sovereign state and its sovereign citizens. I write this word twice lest we forget—the state and its citizens are sovereign. The President and his Democrats also revealed their utter contempt for the rule of law and the Constitution that breathed it into being—the very one they are sworn upon their oath and honor to protect.

In fact, as a matter of law, a person not a citizen has no right to declare himself one, simply by his unlawful breach of the American border. That is the law in America. It is the law in every sovereign state, extant or extinct. And those who declare otherwise are anarchists, that is, people who will not accept, who indeed have repudiated an American Constitution and the rule of law.

There is no exception anywhere. That the American government is engaged in the promulgation of lawlessness, and the savaging of a Constitution, that it is also willing to betray the ancient law which is its foundation, even so, does not create an exception. Instead betrayal inspires lawlessness, crime and infamy, cynicism and contempt.

But what, after all, is to be done when the king himself shreds the law; and declares himself to be in all things, the final word?

One constitutional question that needs to be set straight by the Congress and the Supreme Court, is the question of citizenship when a person is ILLEGALLY in the country and just happens to break her water while here. That sh_t has to stop.

If the "fruit of the poisonous tree" argument can hamper our police in criminal law (that is when the law unlawfully obtains evidence against a suspect and then finds more lawfully obtained evidence as a result of the unlawfully obtained evidence, then it is all thrown out), then certainly an ILLEGAL 's offspring should not be granted citizenship just because mama wandered over the boarder. They should both be thrown out, just like the policeman's unlawfully obtained evidence and everything else that springs from it is thrown out.

Why can't we deport them all? There are approximately 70,000,000 school children in America. On any given day bus 7,000,000 to 14,000,000 of them. They are picked up within about a block from where they live, taken to school, sometimes then taken to a second school, and brought safely home at the end of the day.

This morning I went to sign up my dogs for welfare. At first the lady said, "Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare." So I explained to her that my dogs are mixed race, unemployed, lazy, can't speak English and have no clue as to who their daddy's are.
