The Obama Watch

‘A New Way of Being on the Planet’

The Gulf between the left’s hopes for Obama and reality.

During the feverish excitement of the 2008 campaign, a columnist for the online San Francisco Chronicle, Mark Morford, took it upon himself to educate anti-Obama naysayers with “dysfunctional karmic antennae.” They had been asking him: “What the hell’s the big deal about Obama?”

The question looks prescient these days, but Morford’s karmic antennae at the time picked up something different. Obama — Morford had been told by “spiritually advanced people I know (not coweringly religious, mind you, but deeply spiritual)” — was a “Lightworker, that rare kind of attuned being who has the ability to lead us not merely to new foreign policies or health care plans or whatnot, but who can actually help usher in a new way of being on the planet, of relating and connecting and engaging with this bizarre earthly experiment.”

The karmic antennae of Jon Kabat-Zinn, one of Oprah’s favorite meditation teachers, also picked this up. Kabat-Zinn pronounced Obama America’s “first mindful president.”

Obama, of course, had encouraged this talk with his stump speeches about “we are the ones we have been waiting for” and his campaign slogan ending in a preposition — “Change you can believe in.”

This ludicrous rhetoric and the expectations it inspired have caught up with him, as he looks more and more hackish, dishonest, and feeble by the day — more a lightweight than a “Lightworker,” less “mindful” than mindless. Most politicians spend the bulk of their mental time figuring out how to dodge and weave through a crisis, but one would think such a fabled figure could bring a little bit more imagination and sharpness to the exercise.

The most obnoxiously self-conscious environmentalist president ever stands dumb before America’s worst environmental disaster. Hillary Clinton’s campaign criticisms of Obama as a wimp and cocky dullard hold up fairly well. It turns out that he is not very good at taking tricky calls at 3 AM or 3 PM.

Obama’s idea of nervy leadership is to swear on a morning show (he went down to the Gulf to find out “whose ass to kick,” he said). But notice that even there he had to be led by Today’s Matt Lauer, who induced the swearing through a question about when Obama was going to “kick some butt.”

At a hour when Lauer is normally flipping pancakes with a celebrity chef or goofing off with his smug colleagues, he was besting the President of the United States (who was no doubt kicking himself afterwards for not having chosen Larry King as his interlocutor). Lauer cut Obama off in mid-sentence as he began to chatter insecurely and unconvincingly in his sophomoric Marxist mode — “I am going to stay on [BP] if it is the last thing…” Had he even talked to the BP CEO? Lauer wanted to know. No, Obama had to admit, exposing his big talk about BP as cowardly chuntering. A president known only for his words said he didn’t want to talk to some “guy” who was just going to tell him what he wanted to hear. “With all due respect, that feels strange to me,” Lauer replied.

But moments later, Obama resumed his bragging tone, saying that Tony Hayward “wouldn’t be working for me” after Lauer listed some of the BP CEO’s tone-deaf comments. Hayward had said that he “wants his life back” (striking a note, by the way, not unlike Bush’s FEMA director Michael Brown who wrote an e-mail during the Katrina meltdown in New Orleans that he wished he was home enjoying a “margarita”).

Obama shook his head censoriously as Lauer read Hayward’s comment to him. But doesn’t Obama act like he wants his life back too? He has a put-upon air about him, as if it is outrageous that the presidency should make demands upon him beyond placing ribbons around the necks of rock stars. Obama couldn’t even suppress that air during the Lauer interview. Obama said that he was, long before the pundits noticed the crisis, “standing in the rain” talking to “fishermen” down in the Gulf a month ago.

Can you believe it? Obama had to talk to fishermen while pelted by rain drops. The things he has done for his country and the “planet.”

Barry mentioned "standing in the rain" talking to "fishermen."

Which fishermen, Barry? I want names.

Brian Mc| 6.10.10 @ 6:41AM

That's not important. The really important thing is the fishermen were in his presence and so much the more better off for the experience. Gosh, I sure wish he'd come to my house; I could use a little hope and change right about now. My spiritual antennae just aren't picking up the progressive waves like they should. Then, again, I see that his old college room is up for grabs...might be some residual karma there. I'd better fill up and hit the road.

elephant4life| 6.11.10 @ 6:47PM

I submit that he doesn't even have sense enough to come in out of the rain, unless Rahm or the teleprompter instruct him to do so.

Swimming (literally) in oil is a different way of experiencing life on this planet.

He's a few months away from experiencing a different way of being a president; a man without a country.

Carol| 6.10.10 @ 7:09AM

Matt Lauer has admitted he is a dope by uttering "That seems strange to me."

Duh. Everything about Obama is strange. His actions, his talk, his bowing, his obvious ineptness written all over his face.

Sheila| 6.10.10 @ 2:28PM

Carol...did you notice Lauer said that "FEELS strange to me" ? Why is it everything with libs is feelings, never thoughts.

Patrick| 6.10.10 @ 9:25PM

Because liberalism is a religion, and feelings are their prayers. Not all religions are equal.

George| 6.11.10 @ 5:09PM

In the postmodern world, feelings are seen as the only dependable guide; things only exist if they stimulate an emotional response, and, the stronger the response, the more valid and important the thing. Nowadays, there's no such thing as a passionate lie or a disinterested truth.

Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 6.10.10 @ 7:12AM

The appropriate analogy here is that Obama has become like Br-er Rabbit, stuck to the tar baby by his lack of ideas and experience.

Grzmlyk| 6.10.10 @ 10:31AM

I agree, he is stuck. But a fairly obvious observation I haven't seen any pundit make yet is this:

Has anyone noticed that Obama's "solution" to every problem is retribution against evil-doers? Punishing the guilty? Wreaking vengeance on straw men he meticulously creates? Has he ever proposed anything that affirms human existence?

This monomania for vengeance betrays the mindset of the intellectually puerile activist/community organizer/run-of-the-mill leftist/environmentalist/feminist/union leader/Gay rights advocate, etc.

These people exist exclusively as reactionaries; they are constitutionally incapable of creating anything of value on their own. No, all they know how to do is break down the doors of the edifices of existing institutions and, in ritualistic acts of vengeance, exact revenge on the bastards who created the world as it is.

They build nothing, they create nothing, they improve nothing. They are all about punitive actions – obliteration, criminal charges, litigation, protests, etc. They are in fact nothing but nihilists.

That's why Obama and his merry band of vandals cannot put one foot in front of the other to create anything (at its bottom, the health care bill was not about building a better system but about cutting the insurance companies down to size).

These destructive, bitter, angry, envious, covetous, rapacious, avaricious felons have no interest in their vaunted ideal of "justice." They want first to destroy and second to collect THEIRS, and, like Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull, are only too happy to shatter a priceless championship belt in order to extract a few jewels of limited individual value for their immediate succor.

And this is always and everywhere the logical end of liberal policies: Destruction, corruption, nihilism, degradation, humiliation and abject servitude.

Mark Shepler- Jupiter FL| 6.10.10 @ 11:05AM

Well said, Grmzlyk. But I would add something. For all their blather about "progressivism" there is not a word or idea out this bunch that is newer than about 100 years old. It's all been said and tried before and found wanting and/or deadly. During the run up to the nationalization of health care they even boasted it was time to finally implement an idea overdue since Teddy Roosevelt's time. As though the last 100 years had never happened. And what this shows is they are ineducable and enthralled by faith or mendacious. Either they cannot even learn from experience or they know full well the outcome of their Big Ideas and that is exactly the point- to destroy and reign over the ruins in the hopes of ushering in the New Utopia. I would say the great mass of liberal minded people are the former and the zealots, like Obama, the latter.

Not to take anything away from your comments but they were condensed neatly seven decades ago. I've known some petty lefties but never I have I seen it on display on so prominent a "leader" as occupies the Presidency today. "Socialism is the grandiose rationalization of petty resentments." -Ludwig von Mises

Dope and Chains| 6.12.10 @ 2:45PM

This is a marvelous enumeration of all the reasons why I refuse to call them anything other than Regressives. There is absolutely nothing liberal or progressive about them. Lenin, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot were all "progressives," too: Each was a trailblazer toward new depths of misery, atrocity and mass murder.

buckeyeman| 6.10.10 @ 11:19AM

"WRECKING havoc" is the phrase this illiterate, affirmative-action Harvard graduate typically uses. This clown is becoming SO predictable. Just figure out what the worst, most un-american thing to do in any situation would be and that's what he'll do.

PolishKnight| 6.10.10 @ 11:47AM

In exploring the leftist mind, I have tried to peel away the layers of their belief system simply to either come to an understanding and agreement (given that up) OR to attack them at their core.

Their stated goals are simply rationalizations and conequently, being a mere rationalization, the success or failure of which has nothing to do with their beliefs.

I then chose to debate or attack their stated rationalization: Supposedly "caring" about others. When I observed that the leftist didn't care about me and would easily toss me under the bus, he replied:

"You're letting your simple mindedness get to you. You're brainwashed."

And it was revealed. At least this layer of the onion. The average self-elitist leftist is in love with their own notion of superiority. It's not about them being better because they're more "caring", it's about them being BETTER. This is why it's then easy for them to toss out the non-believers and non-useful into a pit because such people have it coming. It's a religion where they go to heaven and others go to hell.

We are living in the midst of a culture war where the battle isn't really about ideology, that's a smokescreen, but survival based upon which group they fall into.

I think I can now "get" to them by observing that as far as their ideology is concerned, they're just as "stupid" and "bad" as I am. That Josef Stalin always kills the useful dupes first because they're the biggest threat. Or on a more practical level, that outside of their little cliques they're just a bunch of losers like us. That the European socialist elites they yearn to be more like regard them as just dumb, fat Americans. That if they were to go to Germany and ask to get in and collect welfare benefits, they'd say "Sorry, you're just not GOOD ENOUGH for us!"

Anthony| 6.10.10 @ 8:06PM

PolishKnight, This is as good an analysis as one could get. It is about their "superiority" and its relationship to their self worth. And yes, we are at war, cultural or not.

Martin Owens| 6.10.10 @ 12:24PM

V.S. Nailpul put it best in THE RETURN OF EVA PERON: " a child's vision of power and revenge".

Campy| 6.10.10 @ 1:31PM

Grz,
Have you also noticed how he's also stuck on the money?

'Every last dime'... who's going to pay... lifting the cap on liability... demands that BP cover salaries of laid-off workers because of the federal moratorium. A first-focus that, albeit will eventually need to be addressed, but bespeaks a simplistic, immature view that money will make it all better.

Grzmlyk| 6.10.10 @ 3:32PM

Yes, that's the classic liberal bromide. More money! More money! More money - for us!

For three generations we've heard that more money will solve the abysmal education situation in this country.

Remember when state lotteries were instituted across the country? THOSE were supposed to solve all of our educational funding needs in perpetuity. How long did that last before they were coming back to the taxpayer, hat in hand for more? You know, for the CHILDREN, nudge nudge, wink, wink.

Now we spend, what, $14k per student on average per year in this country? It's the highest per-student expenditure in the world.

And instead of learning how to be useful, productive Americans, our kids are illiterate pod people indoctrinated with Marxist propaganda and hypnotized into a false consciousness in which feeling good about themselves is the only moral imperative in the universe. We have made narcissism the apotheosis of human existence. And as long as you spend your adult life preening that person A really ought to give person B his hard-earned money, YOU shall be GOOD in the eyes of the zeitgeist's morality.

Meanwhile, incompetent teachers have their skids greased for life, union officials luxuriate in their mansions appointed with solid gold fixtures even as they rail against the greed of hapless taxpayers, and corrupt politicians fill their campaign coffers with this filthy lucre and fly their taxpayer-supplied jets to union-sponsored fundraisers to rake in more and more and more.

Yes, a good phlegmatic, liberal, juvenile Marxist, Obama and his classless piece of shit of a wife are all about money - public redistribution for the citizens and a craven, avaricious, conspicuous consumption of it for themselves, maintaining a crass and self-flattering nuveau riche lifestyle at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue that makes the court of Louis XVI look positively miserly by comparison.

As more than one pundit has alluded to the apocryphal Marie Antoinette quote, I think Obama's presidential shield should read, "Let them eat shit."

Because that's what he really thinks.

Mark| 6.10.10 @ 4:51PM

It appears Original Sin exists, afterall. And the last time some deep thinker pondered Being things didn't turn out that well (see Martin Heidegeer circa 1924-1938, esp his famous Rektorsrade).

Rich| 6.10.10 @ 7:23PM

Very well stated my friend

JOHNG1| 6.11.10 @ 10:09AM

Yo, GRZMLYK:

That's an excellent working hypotheis about BHO and the people that he has surrounded himself with, both now and in the past.

That said, if that hypothesis proves out (and I think it might in the next several months) there appears to be no stopping them.

Desperation on their part appears to be setting in, and it's only being held in check by their ego's - "can't be happening to me/ us and it will come out our way in the end". When it occurs to them that what their ego's are hiding from them right now is actually happening we are all in trouble.

Desperate people, especially desperate people with power, will miscalulate and do terrible things.

RCV| 6.10.10 @ 1:58PM

Why am I not surprised that you used that analogy?

Alert1201| 6.10.10 @ 7:33AM

One of the things that always disgusted me about Obama, far more then his policies - although they are disgusting, was how he sucked up all this "lightworker" nonsense. It shows how utterly arrogant he really was. Considering myself to be of a somewhat normal mindset if someone called me a "lightworker", "spiritually advanced", or said I was ushering "a new way of being on the planet." I would be thoroughly appalled and tell the person making the claim they need to have their head examined. Yet Obama appeared to love this stuff and actually believed it was true. I'm convinced this type of thinking demonstrates how deceptive and destructive Obama is. He is deluded not only about the reality of the world, but he is deceived about his own importance and greatness. In my limited study of history the only other people I have seen this type of thinking in are totalitarians.

Honestly, I do not think I would vote for a conservative who had as high an opinion of his own importance as Obama does of himself.

Where is that green technology? for cleaning up oil spills?

Not being much into "spirituality" as apparently conceived by our celebrity culture, I hadn't heard the expression "lightworker" before. But I do think it fits the Professor rather well.

In fact, this past academic quarter, I had several light workers among my students, and am I ever glad the quarter's over, despite a fair showing of heavy workers. Anyhow, the light workers am0ng my students are the ones who exhibit the "what-do-I-need-to-do-to-get-a-C" work ethic. They include the student government types and social science activists as well as the party animals, and despite all their very light work, they seem to have become stunningly good at gaming the system--or at least any system that doesn't require much knowledge or discipline to manipulate.

What can better describe our President and his relation to the intricacies of the Americano political system, notwithstanding his ignorance of and contempt for the origins and underpinnings of that system.

Professor Obama may go down in the history of the Presidency as the lightest worker of them all. One cannot help being awed by such spirituality, reducing one as it does to feeling light as a feather.

"The most obnoxiously self-conscious environmentalist president ever stands dumb before America's worst environmental disaster."

Question: exactly, specifically what should the president be doing?

Grzmlyk| 6.10.10 @ 4:41PM

1) Receive a briefing directly from BP CEO tony Hayward every day and give his lickspittle Gibbs a daily update from that for the press
2) assemble ad-hoc crisis team of industry experts from academe, business and government to take 2 weeks to study alternatives, disseminating the results of this information at the end of that time, and to provide Obama daily with face-to-face updates on their progress;
3) Make himself available for weekly Q&A specifically regarding the spill to white house reporters;
4) Visibly make this his top priority by devoting some time to it every day and laying off the white house celebrations;
5) Cutting through red tape himself to provide Jindahl and other people on the ground with the support and equipment they are asking for.
6) Make federal funds immediately available to affected areas;
7) Assemble a team of environmental experts to coordinate the clean-up, both in terms of saving wildlife and sopping up the oil.
8) Stop talking about rounding up the guilty and start focusing on rounding up the oil.

George, if you don't know, then you are probably one of those who voted for Obama based on his nice sounding rhetoric without stopping to think about what actual track record and resumé of proven abilities a President should have. As Commander in Chief, his primary responsibility is to respond swiftly and effectively to any and all threats to our country. Here's just one example: per the link Campy provided, help was offered immediately by the Dutch. But Obama is not a doer, he's a talker -- it's too risky to be the guy who actually takes action. Leaders and doers mobilize effective responses to situations. Academic-minded do-nothings just try to figure out "whose ass to kick" several weeks too late, while also trying to cover their own. Never works though.

Brent| 6.10.10 @ 5:42PM

How about starting by talking the the BP president
and others for a joint effort, allowing Jindal to build the sandbar berms when he asked, 40 days ago and not now to allow 2% of what is required,
while this would intrude on his speaking and PR schedule, the Presidency is or was a real job.
talking to fishermen has precedent as Jesus
did walk on water therafter, and Farrahkhan has indicated the messiahship......question....at what point does oil coaculate sufficiently to be walked on... thus validating at least some actual participation beyond rhetoric and blame......
maybe a third teleprompter for the narcissist in chief?

Jack Burton| 6.11.10 @ 11:51AM

It's really quite simple. We do not have the technology to deal with the leak at it's source. BP is going to have to solve that one. But what we can do is clean and contain the oil that is leaking. And we did absolutely nothing for weeks.

It's amazing that the only "crisis" he's reacted quickly to as president is when his good buddy Gates got arrested for being an ass.

Annoyed| 6.11.10 @ 12:04PM

Pick any choice of action:

1) O'Icarus should step down from his ivory tower and Roman columns, admit he's devoid of substance, and defer to a more qualified leader: Biden.

2) O'Icarus should just step aside, admit he's devoid of substance, and defer to a real leader: Mr. Thad Allen.

3) The "president" should busy himself with more important tasks like polishing his many shrines, and planning more entertainment events with myopic, conceited, elitist musicians and actors.

4) This pile of shlt should join the Hemlock society.

John II told what I live everyday listening to social-scientist grads in my classes. Gaming the system is the first order of business. Its no wonder that Alvin Green (a man who nobody in the party knew or endorsed and faces a felony charge among his other credentials) was elected as the senatorial Dem. nominated candidate for the state of South Carolina. Wow, how did he do it?

davelnaf| 6.10.10 @ 7:45PM

Back in the sixties the MSM used to offer up certain prescient observations on the state of the world and whenever the subject of the Soviet Union came up a network taking head might offer the observation that “the Russian people deserved a government as good as they are.” This little flashoid from the past came to mind as I contemplated Obama’s near incompetence in doing anything right about the Gulf oil spill, and just about anything else he has touched. Yet, in all fairness, the Bamster did run a campaign that was good enough to bamboozle enough Americans into voting for him—no small accomplishment. Seriously, though, we American deserve far better than this imposter in the WH and if there is a silver lining to the cloud that is the Gulf oil spill it is that Obama will now definitely not be running the country beyond Inauguration Day 2012. That is, at least, some comfort.

John II| 6.10.10 @ 9:28PM

What's got me worried is that the Bamster's successful campaign wasn't all that imposing an accomplishment.

The culture was already being kneaded into this kind of imbecility for almost two generations before the Bamster was even born. Dewey's colossally baleful influence on the public education system, for example, really got cracking by the 1920's. The Catholic education system started following suit at just about the time the Bamster was a toddler.

He wouldn't acknowledge it, of course, because like most people of his generation, he has only a deracinated attitude, without any sense of history. But the fact is, his political achievement can be plausibly written off as nothing more than instinct responding to fortuitous opportunity.

Professor Obama is preeminently a child of his times. That's his only strength--and it's his fatal weakness.

And regarding the mindless lemmings, please refer back to my previous post, a few rolls above.

JT| 6.10.10 @ 9:46PM

Look guys, Obama started out looking like the GREAT WHITE HOPE or, possibly the GREAT BLACK HOPE. However, he certainly isn't a HEAVYWEIGHT and, you can't even call him a LIGHTWEIGHT without being overly generous.
He IS a BUFFOON.
He said he was looking for someone's A$$ to kick well, he also has said that the BUCK STOPS WITH HIM so, I guess we just might be able to get some entertainment value out of him IF HE WERE TO ACTUALLY KICK HIS OWN A$$ but, I don't believe we should have paid several TRILLION DOLLARS to get to watch him do this ... do you ??
Further, his posturing definitely reminds me of another SOCIALIST, LIBERAL, PROGRESSIVE from days gone by and, I am NOT talking about HITLER. Hitler had the ability to threaten simply by speaking and, everyone knew he meant it. Obama simply can't do this. This IS why NO ONE around the world takes him seriously. So, you're asking yourself then, just who are you talking about ??
Well, why none other than " IL DUCE " himself, Benito Mussoliini who behaved like a thug, talked big, just like some maffia Don but, when it came time to REALLY do something, he simply didn't have what it takes to play with the BIG BOYS and OBAMA, just like MUSSOLINI, DOESN'T HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO PLAY WITH THE BIG BOYS.
Sheesh, I could do a much better job as President than OBAMA. And, I can PROOVE I WAS BORN HERE IN THE U.S. and, I WON'T BE BEHOLDEN TO ARAB MONEY MEN FOR MY CONTRIBUTIONS ! ---------- JT ----------

As everyone but politicians, Liberals & the Media knows, Action talks, Bull Sh-t walks!

Barrack sit at the feet of his friend and Mentor for 20 years, supported him with his money, his family, subjected his children to his hate filled rants and listened to hate venom spewed out against whites, Jews, American, & everyone with the exception of Blacks and Muslims!

All the pundits, talking heads, Liberal drivel and warm tingling feeling below their waist, cannot change the facts.

It is 20 years too late for anyone with an brain to accept. Either Barrack is lying or he has an serious mental problem! No one in their right mind would sit in the Church of Hate for 20 years and support it every way possible, unless they agreed with the message or they were crazy!

Oh, The Outrage, the Moral Condemnation, The Media, Blacks leaders, all the Black Rev's would be popping out of every cracker jack box to get in on the action & check out the possibilities for Liberal white guilt and Blackmail. While all Blacks, Liberals and Democrats would be squealing like pigs caught under the gate!

Republican politicians Major and Minor would be shoving and pushing to get in front of the TV cameras and join in the condemnation, often & loudly, to show the world how politically correct they are.

Every one of the known and unknown in the universe would be calling for his head, no punishment would be enough, resigning from office would not be enough, the poor follow would have to change his name, travel incognito, flee the country! The IRS and FBI would be investigating the church, the church closed and all its members disbanded and scattered to the four winds!

What does Barrack, the Magnificent (May Peace be upon Him) have to do? Why just make an nice little speech blaming it all on his little old white typical grandmother, just throw her under the bus of his racist prejudice and if that is not enough, just whites in general!

But Wait, that speech was for the Rev. His extensive fact-finding trip to the Gulf lasted 3 hours, just time enough to get a dramatic photo-op of him sticking his finger in the sand. And do you really believe he stood there in the rain? (My mother used to say we kids were too stupid to get out of the rain...) . But if he did, what does that tell you of his brain power? But I guess we should be grateful he spared 3 hours out of his trip to raise money for Boxer at a dinner (you can bet that leg took lots more than 3 hours).

For the last year and a half, anyone who complained of Obama's poor performance was promptly chastised and assured that this would be corrected in time and was simply due to his inexperience. By the way has anyone noticed how the Republican Leadership has all but removed the message of repealing Obamacare? This is why the numbers are going down in the polls of Americans wanting to repeal it, just like Axlerod figured. Americans have extremely short attention spans, and the Republican leadership is playing right into it.
Kind of makes Led Display one think that they never did want it repealed in the first place. Their stratagem is, "Well, just tweak it when we're the Led Lighting majority."
