The Current Crisis

Provincial Times

There’s no reason to rejoice at the present sickliness of newspapers like the nerdy New York Times.

WASHINGTON — The declining state of the American newspaper apparently warms a lot of hearts. Polls tell us about the general public’s disrelish for Congress. Equally disrelished are journalists and newspapers. Frankly I sympathize. The American journalist is an odd creature. Most are as arrogant and provincial as the average American college professor. Curiously, many journalists even look like university professors, especially journalists from the major liberal newspapers.

There was a day when the average newspaper reporter was a bit of a roughneck and looked the part. Now many are frankly nerdy, though it is not their nerdy looks that inflame the general public. It is the arrogance and insularity. Well, as I say I am in sympathy with the general public, but that does not mean I rejoice in the present sickliness of newspapers. Newspapers are essential to the public discourse of any nation and to the public record.

I most recently expressed these wayward views in a discussion of the notoriously Liberal New York Times. I was being interviewed by that very fine conservative journalist Terry Jeffrey, former editor of Human Events and now editor and chief of CNS News at that bastion of conservative media bashing, the Media Research Center (MRC). Terry was delighting in regaling me with a burlesque he had observed at New York’s Penn Station. The Times was conducting a subscription drive, with an employee handing commuters gifts emblazoned with the Times logo for subscribing. Prospective subscribers treated the poor sap as though he were carrying the plague. They ducked around him, hastening down the hallway, grateful to be free of the New York Times bacterium.

Well, it is an amusing story, but there on the hallowed conservative ground of the MRC headquarters I had to express my sympathy for the glum journalists at the Times. I want the newspaper to survive. Even in its ideologically perfervid condition it is better than no newspaper at all. We conservatives have our own newspapers, led nationally by the Wall Street Journal. Actually, against mainstream Liberal media we have our own conservative counterculture led by the JournalFox News, talk radio, our think tanks and magazines. We can hold our own against the Kultursmog the mainstream media culture besmogged as it is by Liberal prejudice and bugaboos.

I read the Liberal press every day, the Times along with the Washington Post. What is most troubling about the Times is not its ideology or even its inaccuracies. Those of us who read widely can generally spot a newspaper’s inaccuracies. The problem with the Times is its ethics. Just the other day it claimed to have broken through its aggressive reporting a very significant story. It claimed to break the story that a Democratic Senate candidate in Connecticut, the state’s attorney general Richard Blumenthal, repeatedly made false claims about having served in combat during the Vietnam War.

Now we find out that some of the information used by the Times came from one of Blumenthal’s potential opponents, a Republican Linda McMahon. Once the story was published McMahon boasted of it. Surely it was the duty of the newspaper to inform us of its reporters’ use of McMahon’s material. For that matter surely the newspaper’s editors should have expected that McMahon would blow their cover. As I say, modern journalists tend to be arrogant and provincial. Here is a good example of it.

Yes. Americans are only fooling themselves if they continue to read discredited Communist, gay-agenda-promoting, Muslim sympathizing anti-American rags like the Times. The team at Fox News aren't journalists. I agree with most of the commenter s. The NYT has lost much if not most of its credibility. The editorial page influences too much of the news component. And the ethical lapses are too serious to sniff at. I would prefer to see an internal revolution change the paper for the better. Barring that, then RIP.

Just in the past few weeks, the NYT has repeatedly refused to retract false stories about ACORN after it had been demonstrated in multiple investigations that they did not break the law.. that O'Keffe "heavily edited" his videos.. that he lied about what he was wearing.. that they slandered people like the guy in California who appeared to cooperate to call the police immediately after O'Keefe left.

After inquiry after inquiry, the only correction the Times deemed to release was a half-hearted 'whoops'.

The American public has rejected liberalism and is not as stupid as many think, therefore the papers are failing because they are simply trying to sell a defective product.

Like all other markets, information is valuable. When anyone continually lies to the American public sooner or later they are found out and the market forces render those sources obsolete.

So, in fact, you should wish for the demise of these gargantuan lie machines, particularly the New York Times. It proves that capitalism works, but even more important, it proves that the American public is smarter than many believe.

Perhaps people whose political opinions don't happen to coincide with your own don't need a single voice (or two) on the radio telling them what to think. Perhaps they're online at the American Spectator website trying to make sure they've got a handle on all kinds of points of view, different perspectives, interpretations of events, etc. Perhaps Keith Olbermann on TV is enough. BUT thing to remember is that McDonalds is the biggest selling perveyor of food on the Earth. They sell more food than anyone at any given moment.

Does that mean it's the best food? That all other food should be rejected simply because they outsell health food stores?

See we liberals don't need talk radio because WE ARE WORKING, we get out news from a wide variety of outlets, Newspapers, online, various news shows and news magazines, while the number one listeners to hate radio, aka, conservative radio are usually unemployed, or elderly sitting on the porch chairs yelling at kids to get off their lawns and klan members and for gummint to get out of their lives...except for the Social Security checks which conservatives have been trying to get rid of for 6 decades, and Medicare which Saint Ronnie Raygun said was going to lead to the downfall of America and lead us straight into communism and now universal healthcare which those same "gummint stay out of our lives" conservatives are feeding off the gummint teat.

And if you really believe that "death panels" will not be part of Obama care, LOL. At some point everyone has a "value". Do you still drive the same car, or have you "means tested" and junked it? If you then tell me that the government cares more then your insurance company, why I would answer would a company that has free competition, not have more interest in you then a monopoly government run company?

As you know better than any of us, the demise of our American culture has been, to a major extent, promulgaged by the elite media. Furthermore, to say that conservative media can now act as a sufficient counter-weight agaisnt the leftist MSM flies in the face of reality. The MSM's treatment of TAS is a wonderful example of how the MSM marginalizes all conservative media. We are still in an uphill battle with no end in sight.
In addition to all this, the Times & other leftist rags, have not only committed treason during war, they have routinely misled and lied to Americans about the state of their country. This is unforgivable.
You can bemoan the current state of the MSM and the damage they has done to us as Americans, as well as hope for a sea change that will bring them back to their professional code of objective news reporting, but unless and until that happens, may they RIP. Hopefully, out of their ashes will come a renewed sense of professionalism..

Well, as someone else pointed out, new media is more of an actual threat to newspaper journalism than any percieved bias. They aren't killing themselves with leftist retohoric or anything silly like that. It's an old paper with a long reputation of quality journalism, but people are getting their news for free. Online blogs and news aggregaters are pulling readers from the newspapers, which is coupled with dwindling add revenue. I mean it's not like the NYT is the only paper having a hard time right now, many "liberal" and "conservative" papers are either going under or in threat of going under financially.

I am amazed by my fellow readers. I had to re-read to be sure I didn't misunderstand. In a free society, we need vigorous discussion by (and with) all points of view. That many in the left have proverbially checked their ethics at the door, resulting in their declining credibility is what Mr. Tyrell is lamenting.

Just because liberals/progressives tend to only have one solution to any problem doesn't mean that there is never any merit to their concerns. As conservatives, we understand that government is usually a last resort solution for most problems, and that the Federal government is supposed to be constitutionally one of limited and enumerated powers. But a viverant discussion can lead to innovative private sector solutions that exceed
what any one side could conceive without the dialetic.

Pray for Julia, a most precious and beautiful soul, just one of the many who suffered under the Nazi's and spent the entire time of the war in a camp, (Volkswagon), along with other starving youth. She was taken from an idyllic farm life living in her home in Russia, thrown into the back of a truck with other girls, at age 16, and hauled off. Till the Brits liberated them. Thank you, Brits!

She's had a wonderful life in the U.S. after first going to Canada after the war and waiting on a list for TEN years to come here. She met her husband in Canada, where they had my husband, who you know here, Victor. He became an engineer and held many and various patents for all kinds of things, including a machine that made rifle butts.

When he came here he got a letter from Stalin "encouraging" him to return to Russia. He had been an honor student at Stalin's academy but later fought against the Nazi's, himself being shot down and captured, but later escaping by bribing the guard with his Stalin academy watch. He wrote back to Stalin saying he will NEVER return to Russia, that America is is home! Julia told me that Stalin went and scratched his name off of the wall of the academy where his name was an an honor student. I said to her that that is an honor in itself that he did that!

Newspapers used to carry useful information along with stimulating articles. The NYT is a victim of it's own success at eliminating opposition viewpoints. Why does even a liberal need to read opinions they have established as mainstream? Nothing is more boring than a revolutionary who clings to their status quo.

The NYT and other journalists did their best to subvert even the limited use of a newspaper, as a "record" held by libraries, into a revisionist rag where they rewrite history. Sorry, but I would rather have NO record than a lie.

New media means that libraries need to no longer be physical but rather virtual and store blogs and online newspapers. That way, a multitude of different perspectives will be available for generations.

Anyways, I had a similar experience to the one described by Bob. I was at a grocery store and we saw a contest to win a car. I signed up and it turned out to be a subscription drive for the Washington Post. I didn't treat her like a plague victim, but pointed out that I had no use for the written newspaper. I preferred to read articles from a variety of sources online. She then suggested the sunday paper. Remember the sunday paper? Comics and ads galore. Except I get both of those online too without the hassle of having to throw out 90% of the paper as fluff.
