To Will Barrett, the main character in Walker Percy’s The
Second Coming, it was a perfectly reasonable statement and
question: “The historical phenomenon of the Jews cannot be
accounted for by historical or sociological theory. Accordingly,
they may be said to be in some fashion or other a sign. Wouldn’t
you agree?”
Their temple was destroyed by the Romans, and their
remnants were routed by the Romans at Masada. They were spread to
the four winds, persecuted by pagans and Christians and Muslims.
Century after century saw pogroms carried out against them. They
were preached against, marginalized, disdained, blamed, enslaved,
murdered. Yet they endured. They were subjected to Holocaust, yet
they endured. Finally given a small sliver of a land, they were
attacked from all directions by a confederation of enemies. And
attacked again. And attacked again. And, in wave after wave of
smaller attacks, attacked yet again and again and again and again
and again and again to this day.
And everything was portrayed as their fault. When
terrorists killed their athletes, well, the surviving terrorists
were mere political prisoners, willingly traded in return for the
freeing of a hijacked airliner and given a heroes’ welcome when
they touched down in Libya as free men. When Hamas fired rockets
into Israel and the Israelis retaliated, well, it was the
retaliation that was blasted by the United Nations and by
feckless spineless bigoted Europeans. When they traded land for
an Arafat promise of peace, only to have more war waged on them
from the very land they had traded… well, wasn’t it obvious that
they needed to give up more land still?
Feckless spineless bigoted Europeans continue to be the
bane of their existence. So do hateful murderous Arabs and
Muslims, fomenting murder masked as religion, claiming jihad when
engaged in nothing more than bloody mayhem that dishonors any
just and decent God and would make an evil ape of any Prophet
that would actually bless such a cause. (As the Prophet is
obviously no evil ape, it is the cause and not the Prophet who
bears the blame, for it is a false cause that the Prophet could
not bless. Good and decent Arabs and Muslims, meanwhile, are
marginalized by the murderers.)
And now, in four days, two new outrages are perpetrated
against the Israelis. First, the United States — itself led by a
president too craven to call jihadist terrorism by its name, a
president openly biased in favor of Islamists — for the first
time ever joined an international conference that began a call
for Israel to renounce nuclear weapons, while making nary a
mention of Iran’s own nuke developments. Then, when operating in
a blockade supported by Egypt — a blockade perfectly
reasonable that merely asks that ships loaded for terrorist Gaza
be inspected for weapons before being allowed to reach its
destination, and while its soldiers are armed merely with
paintball guns and a stray pistol or two — Israel rightfully
defends its attacked personnel… and, of course, again finds
itself treated as the pariah, the source of the fault, the
instigator of the very mayhem it only seeks to avoid. Writing in
the UK Spectator,
Melanie Phillips rightly calls the developments
“a global pogrom in the making.”
Yet in all of these dreadful developments, we should not
make the mistake of thinking that the state of Israel or the
Jewish people are victims. In truth, as a people they are too
proud and strong to be victims. As always, there is something
that keeps them going, that will not give up, that will persevere
and survive and, yes, triumph. Yes: “The historical phenomenon of
the Jews cannot be accounted for by historical or sociological
theory.” The fictional Will Barrett was marveling at their
hardiness, and wondering what their survival signifies. Addled by
an imbalance in brain chemicals, Barrett nevertheless was onto
something approaching existential truth. One need not read the
novel to understand where Barrett’s wonder comes from, and to
understand why he thinks it must signify — “in some fashion or
other” — something important and perhaps even transcendent. No
mere theory, he thinks, could possibly account for so many, many,
many centuries of achievement amidst unceasing strife.
Achievements, yes: wondrous contributions in the arts, and in
economics, and in medicine, and in commerce, and in science, and
certainly in philanthropy. Only the mysteries of a particularly
strong human character, backed perhaps in some wise by a
covenantal God, can explain this “historical phenomenon” of a
people so enduring and so often great and good.
Kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall. Leaders arise who claim
their own rise is “the moment when the rise of the oceans began
to slow and out planet began to heal.” But those leaders, like
the kingdoms, likewise will fall prey to their own egomania and
internal hollowness. Those leaders, failing to support Israel,
will find that Israel survives every Ozymandias the millennia
dare throw at it.
The 19th Century British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli
had it right. “Yes, I am a Jew,” he said to a critic. “And when
the ancestors of the Right Honorable gentleman were brutal
savages in an unknown island, mine were priests in the temple of
Solomon.” And Solomon, as we know, was wise.

Agreed, the Jews will go on .... but will Israel?
It has hard to be optimistic about that state's future, say 20 - 25 years out. So much is being stacked against it.

Jews: great, Israel: horrific experiment that needs to end.

Israel is an extension of the Jewish people so don't try to hide behind that veil of Jews yes, State of Israel (Zionism) that needs to end??? What kind of language is this? End? Are you so threatening me and my people AGAIN with death!? You will see that in the end you will bring a rain of destruction upon YOURSELF...that is what history shows...
fred gill| 6.3.10 @ 1:53PM
Talons, I can appreciate your frustration but it doesn't help to vilify honest opinions. I am a Gentile who supports Israel's continued existence and believes America should stand staunchly by her. But in fairness to Hyrim there were formerly many Jews, and very devout ones, who thought the founding of Israel was a mistake. They appreciated that Jewry cannot survive as mere tribalism. The de facto agnosticism of so many Jews, for whom an easy -going secular humanism has replaced the study of the Torah and a strict observance of Jewish law, presents a greater danger to Judaism than all the Islamists in the world could ever present to Israel. It would be a huge tragedy if the state of Israel fell. But the truth is that only God knows what the future holds. Jews existed and thrived for 1900 years without any state of their own. It would be silly to think they could not do so again. I do pray they shall not have to.
As regards the events of the weekend, of course the "peace flotilla" movement is cynical, manipulative crap. Yet true to form, the left-leaning media here and abroad are wetting their panties over the whole thing. Nicholas Kristoff's idiotic piece this morning in the NYT is a perfectly nauseating sample of the tripe that's out there. Israel's only mistake was tactical - but it has turned out to be a huge mistake. They should have known better than to drop ten commandos virtually single-file into a hostile ship. The terrorists have won this round and Israel must fight smarter in the next one.
Talons of Judah| 6.3.10 @ 3:34PM
Fred Gill - I agree somewhat but even Orthodox Jews believed and prayed that eventually the Jews would return to the Land of Zion HENCE modern Zionism. The touchy-feely (ignorant) LIBERAL Judaism of today is indeed dangerous but without Israel the Jewish world position would revert back to the pre-WWII helpless Jude all over again.

Margie| 6.4.10 @ 11:14AM
Correct! If one does not read the Bible and believe what God has to say directly, it is only because his or her flesh does not want to accept what He is saying. Even the Bible itself says it:
"First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God." 2 Peter 1:20&21;.
"..but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His Name." Jn. 20:31.
"..so that they should set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments.." Ps. 78:7.
As for Israel: "Behold, a day of the LORD is coming, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in the midst of you. For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women ravished; half of the city shall go into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then the LORD will go forth and fight against those nations as when He fights on a day of battle. On that day His feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives which lies before Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley; so that one half of the Mount shall withdraw northward, and the other half southward. And the valley of My mountains shall be stopped up, for the valley of the mountains shall touch the side of it; and you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzzi'ah king of Judah. Then the LORD your God will come, and all the holy ones with him. On that day there shall be neither cold nor frost. And there shall be continuous day (it is known to the LORD), not day and not night, for at evening time there shall be light."

Obviously...God never intended slavery or death for that matter. These were corruptions that came upon the world as a result of man's rejection of God and His Word (Who IS God). When Christ came, He spoke to the root of man's problem - man's rejection of God and His Word. Jesus, the Word of God made flesh declared that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. You are either for God or against Him. "Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza" has in-as-much stated that he is against God and rejects His Word. Slavery shall exists in this fallen and corrupted world until the Lord returns. "we live in a secular country, with a secular consitution..."
Let me enlighten you:
our bill of rights were inspired by the founding fathers Judeo-Christian values. Throughout the Constitution and Declaration of Independence there are reference's to God and divine providence (which I take to mean God). The founding fathers where overwhelmingly Christian (not all were but most were). Here are but a few examples.
On May 16, 1776 the founders declared the 17th of May a national day of prayer to confess our sins to Jesus Christ.
July 9, 1776 George Washington ordered Christian chaplains to every regiment in his army.
September 11, 1776 U.S. Continental Congress ordered 20 thousand bibles for soldiers.
George Washington was invited to be the first king of America to which he responded “America already has a king and His name is Jesus Christ”.
During the revolutionary war there was a common saying “No other king but Jesus”.
America was made up of Pilgrims who were Puritans, Quakers, Baptist, Methodist, Lutherans, Catholics etc. all who had bibles and claim Jesus Christ.
Engraved on the Washington Monument are “Praise be to God”.
In the monument there are scriptures on the blocks such as: Luke 18:16 “Suffer the little children to come unto me”, Exodus 28:36 “ Holiness unto the Lord”
On the Jefferson memorial God’s name is in quotes.
Lincoln Memorial has name of God and quotes from the bible.
In the Senate is a plaque that says “In God we trust”.
Moses with the commandments is in the Library of Congress and on the Supreme Court also.
Chapel of U.S. Congress has a stained glass window with George Washington on his knees praying.
52 of the 55 signers of the Constitution attended Christian churches.
“In God we trust was put on our currency first on coins in 1864 and then by an act of Congress in 1956.
The pledge of allegiance added in the year 1954 “one nation under God”.
As one can clearly see we were overwhelmingly based on and continue to have Judeo-Christian values. Granted there are many religious beliefs all throughout America but we are overwhelmingly Judeo-Christian.

First, let me say that I have no problem with a Jewish state. If the Christian west feels guilty about its 2000 year persecution of Jews and even more guilty about the Holocaust, then perhaps they should have been given parts of Germany or Poland or the Soviet Union for the Jewish homeland. What right did they have to give someone else's (the Arab Palestinians) land to the Jews. And don't give me that Old Testament crap. It is a myth to justify the taking of the land from the Caannites , Moebites, and all the other people exterminated by the Hebrews to get the land.
In the last Ottoman census of Palestine (circa 1910), the population was 10% Christian, 10% Jewish and 80% Muslim. At the time of the partition in 1947-48, the Jewish population of the UN defined Israel was only 60% and that was about 50% of Palestine. However, after using terrorism, the winning three wars with American know-how and material help, Israel has doubled in size. Now you tell me who is the aggressor here.
Let me be clear, I am neither Arab or Jew and my people have suffered horribly in an Islamic country. And, despite what may be in the Koran, Islam today is dominated by misogynist, intolerant and brutal fanatics, but the fact remains, that the Israel/US power grab and aggression should be an embarrassment to both countries. How can you expect peace when there is no justice.

Israel probably has more nuclear weapons than Britain, a lot more guts and an iron determination to defend itself, regardless of what the rest of the world thinks. Israel also knows who its enemies are (many) and who its friends are (virtually none). So its destiny is entirely within its own hands. Israel owes nothing to anybody, because so many hate it. That gives a lot of freedom of action. Watch how fast the smirks disappear from the faces of the anti-semetic elite once the bombs start dropping and they realise how ineffectual their disdain has been.
When it comes to national survival, those qualities are not to be laughed at. Personally, I think the EU is in more danger of disintegrating than Israel is. Sure, being hated and despised is bad, but it sure beats being dead, and Israel is bound to choose being hated and despised.

Iraq, 500,000 tons of yellowcake uranium, currently being destroyed in Canada. Afghanistan? Maybe you missed 9-11. Then again, maybe the Jews were behind that, too? Idiot. Iran? Bad for everyone if they nuke up, so what's the problem with flattening them?

Though not every Jew is a follower of this idea, Israel was resurrected by Zionists and as a place where every Jew, Zionist or not, could return.
So to wipe off Zionism is to wipe off Israel. And you know this as surely as I do.

Great idea - cut off all assistance to Israel and let them fight their own wars. What are you going to do when Israel attacks with nuclear weapons, what leverage will you have then? In 1973 Israel told the US they were being defeated in the October War and they were prepared to use nuclear weapons to save themselves. This was not an idle threat and the Americans knew it. A nuclear war was a real possibility whether the US wanted it or not. The US launched a massive supply program to give Israel the weapons they needed. It prevented a nuclear war. So I say again - go ahead, wise guy, cut your own nose off to spite your face, stop supporting Israel.

I pray to God, the 72% of American Jews come to their senses and pay attention to what the Pretender in Chief is doing. They're also are the biggest individual contributors to the dhimmicrat party. Have they lost their minds? Do they have a death wish? Or do they hate Israel, their very own inheritance from God, so much that they would stand by while Satan and his minions, the mooslims, try everything they can to anniliate them? Everything that is happening is foretold in the Bible. My wife says, again and again, the US needs a WEAK President, who turns his back on Israel, before the next stages of prophesy can come to pass. Look what we get with Obama? End times for the world.

We Know| 6.3.10 @ 4:55PM
Man lives in a corrupted and fallen world - by his chosen actions. Actions have consequences. For now, God deals with man on this basis. God is the Creator and Life Giver to all and is judge and life taker when He chooses and for His purposes. Much of what takes place on this earth is for eternal, not temporal, reasons. For instance - the great flood. Wickedness had consumed the earth and God (through mercy) saved the last righteous man and thus subsequent generations. God later chose a man, Abraham, with which He built a nation, Israel. God is still dealing with this rebellious nation. After scattering Israel to the four corners of the earth (due to their disobedience), God has in these end times re-gathered the nation of Israel back to their promised land (a miracle of miracles in and of itself). God is concluding His dealings with Israel and His promises to Abraham now before our eyes. Israel shall be saved.Romans 11:26, "And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob."

I noticed that you described the Jews as the Jews of Israel. That to me sounds more truthful than much of what I seen written about them. Especially seeing that the Jews came from Israel but from a biblical standpoint are a differnt entity than Israel and are described as such in the Old Testament.
The Jews, or the tribe Judah or better yet the house of Judah as the bible decribes them are actually 3 of the 13 tribes of Israel. The house of Israel was taken into captivity by Assyria(Germany) and spread north west to populate the British Common wealth and most of the modern world today. The U.S ,Canda,France Britain, and most western Europe are all desendents of the lost tribes of Israel and can be proven by studying our own bibles. The first time that the word Jew in the Old Testament they are at war with Israel 1&2 Kings. Once they were taken into captivity they became the lost 10 tribes of Israel. They rejected God's Holy Days and lost their identity as Israel until this day.
Judah consisted of Judah ,Benjamen, and of course God's ministry the tribe of Levi.
Todays modern world do not know who they are desendent from. It certainly explains why the U.S and Canada were blessed so much and why there is such a drastic difference between the British Empires and the Us live so differntly than the rest of the world. It is clearly God's promice that was promiced to Abraham.
Genesis 48 & 49 explain the promises given to each tribe. The tribes of Joseph(Manasseh and Ephraim) were the ones that God promiced would become a great company of nations(Ephraim) that would flow over the wall to become the greatest nation ever to happen on this earth who became the United States.(Manasseh)

How odd. I thought it was the UN who decided the Jews and the "Palestinians" (Arabs) would each share a division of that piece of land and it had nothing to do with religion. The "Palestinians" chose to not take their share because it involved Jews. Now they want the whole thing, even though they've done nothing to improve the land they're squatting on. I dare say the oasis the Israelis have made of their land has something to do with it
Serge from Wellington| 6.3.10 @ 8:18PM
Charie, I almost entirely agree with what you say, with one exception: the Palestinian Arabs, unlike the Palestinian Jews, don't give a rat's arse for the oasis Israelis created. Yes...what a wonderful thing if nobody stood for anything - no morals, no beliefs, no convictions, no right/wrong. It would sure make things easier for the likes of Obama to mold us. My foundation is the Bible. This is a book that has stood the test of time, but can ONLY really be appreciated when you begin to live by it. It is ONLY then that you will understand. You do not nor cannot understand because, after all, you said that it is made up. I challenge you to sincerely take some time and read the Bible. At least then when you criticise others you will not do so from complete ignorance. If God's Word is "made up" then read it and prove me wrong.
Paul| 6.17.10 @ 11:43PM
I have read the Bible. I have also studied how it was written and how it was translated. My point was only that no human can claim to speak for God. Just look at the Bible. It has been interpreted thousands of different ways. As an example, the Bible was used both to support and oppose slavery. There are hundreds of different sects with different beliefs. What makes you so sure that you alone have the actual truth? Are you divine? Are you just smarter than all of the other people telling us what the Bible means? And how do we even know that the Bible is the most accurate holy book? The Jews who live in Israel reject most of the Bible. There are millions of faithful muslims who believe the koran as ardently as you believe your interpretation of the bible. What makes you smarter than them? Could it be because you were "lucky" enough to be born into a Christian culture? How convenient. Do you think you would have converted to Christianity by now if you had been born in Saudi Arabia? I doubt it. But who cares: Let's condemn those arabs to Hell anyway...

Perhaps we didn’t appreciate fully enough the depth of the hatred and the complexity of the problems that made the Middle East such a jungle. Perhaps the idea of a suicide car bomber committing mass murder to gain instant entry to Paradise was so foreign to our own values and consciousness that it did not create in us the concern for the marines’ safety that it should have.
In the weeks immediately after the bombing, I believe the last thing that we should do was turn tail and leave. Yet the irrationality of Middle Eastern politics forced us to rethink our policy there. If there would be some rethinking of policy before our men die, we would be a lot better off. If that policy had changed towards more of a neutral position and neutrality, those 241 marines would be alive today.

Serious adherence to core Judaism has been supplanted by Liberalism and Justice...justice for all except Jews! Traditionally, Jews favored Change...not Hussein change but political reform in every country they lived so they were/are always in the forefront for change, revolution, radicalism and improving the human condition. All that translated into voting Democratic for the last 100 years or so. Old habits die hard. Many of us in the Jewish community welcome your support and belief system with open arms. Serge from Wellington| 6.3.10 @ 8:32PM
"Evangelizing" into Marxist creed is much more anti-Jewish and anti-Semitic, keeping in mind what a self-hating evangelised ex-Jew was the Prophet Karl himself.
We could count the obvious retardiness of the liberal American Jews in this regard as another proof that Jews are G*d's chosen people: when He creates a Jewish idiot, He does it with a special gusto.
KyMouse| 6.3.10 @ 9:18AM
The late messianic evangelist Zola Levitt (levitt.com) often pointed out that no other people have experienced what his Jewish people have: They were driven out of their ancient homeland; scattered among almost every other nation, and persecuted; yet finally gathered back to their homeland -- and speaking the same language, and acknowledging (if not always worshipping) the same God.
The same couldn't be said of the Egyptians, the Romans or the Greeks, Zola pointed out. Visit any of their ancient sites, and your tour guide will not be likely to worship their ancient gods or be adept at their ancient languages.
The reborn nation of Israel could have been in Uganda, as some people suggested -- but it is right where God always said it would be. And the language is Hebrew, not Yiddish, which some had wanted. The prophet Isaiah could walk down Ben Yehuda Street in Jerusalem and converse with anyone he met.
The story of the Jewish people, and of Israel, has unfolded exactly as the Bible said it would. Deuteronomy 28:58-67 is among the verses that foretold the hard times. Ezekiel 36:24 is just one of the many verses which promise that God will lead His Jewish people back to their homeland, and that no one will be able to drive them out of it again. Some people call Rome the "eternal city," but the Bible clearly says that it is Jerusalem (see Revelation 21:10).
The prophecies about the Jewish people are (one) proof of the Bible's divine inspiration. The Bible says that Israel and the Jewish people are in for a terrible time yet to come, but they will not perish (Jeremiah 31:31-37).
We have God's word on it.

This excellent article mentions Benjamin Disraeli; that prime minister was, like Zola Levitt, a Jewish believer in Jesus. He wrote, "Christianity is completed Judaism, or it is nothing. Christianity is incomprehensible without Judaism, as Judaism is incomplete without Christianity." He hoped that Jews "will accept the whole of their religion instead of only the half of it, as they gradually grow more familiar with the true history and character of the New Testament."
Distinguished "Jews for Jesus" have also included planetary astronomer William Herschel and composer Felix Mendelssohn, who wrote the music for "Hark, the herald angels sing" (among many other compositions,) and Jay Sekulow, of today's American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ).

In it you will read about Jews who found out the meaning of the "new covenant" foretold in Jeremiah 31, the identity of the "suffering servant" in Isaiah 53, and the identity of the "pierced" one in Zechariah 12. And much more.
When did God ever repeal Leviticus 17:11: "...it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul"? Do you have God's blood sacrifice for your sins, or will you have to pay for all of them yourself? Jewish (and gentile) believers in Jesus have that necessary blood atonement -- "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all" (Isaiah 53:6).
More and more Jewish folks are reading the New Testament for themselves and making up their own minds about Jesus.
The late Dr. Vera Schlamm, a New York pediatrician and survivor of the Bergen-Belsen death camp, wrote, "When I accepted [Jesus], it was strictly because God showed me, yes, Jesus is the expected Messiah, and that was reason enough to believe in him...Do we need to protect ourselves from the 'disgrace' of becoming Jews who believe in Jesus? Should we keep a chain on the door of our hearts so we don't have to see if he is out there, if he is real? No, for if Jesus is the Messiah, it is no disgrace for a Jew to believe...
"We must not be swayed by the irrational accusations and behavior of ignorant people who don't understand whas Christianity is about," she continued. "If we respond to them by letting so much fear and malice into our hearts that we have no room left to thoughtfully consider who Jesus is, then their madness has triumphed. Do we need a chain to protect us? Let the protection be from our own fears and malice.
"Let us remove the chains that keep us closed, that we might open the door of our hearts and go beyond our prejudices to look for the Messiah."

I opine as a conservative from fly over country. My religious mentor matter of factly maintains that the day we turn our back on Israel, is the day GOD turns his back on the United States. Though we have given our creator many other reasons, I believe our abandonment of Israel is at hand. Our leftist president and the leftist rabble that follow him are obvious in their distaste for Israel and their support for the arabs.
Can it ever be historically argued that Israel doesnt belong, at least, on the ground they occupy in that land of the bible?? WHAT is a palestinian anyway. Does one have to be an arab to be a palestinian or is palestine a geographical area and any one who has some historical claim to residency properly call themselves palestinians? If that's so the jews are palestinians. The mighty UN gave Israel its sliver of land in the late 40s, whereupon the arabs attacked and never stopped attacking. Today that same UN, predominantly composed of hoodlum dictators, reflexively condemns Israel when they dare to repel the arab terrorists who clownishly attack them. Joining the fine group at the UN is the rest of the politically correct world, which now includes our leftist leader and all of the leftist democrat gang. Didnt our leftist Sec of State look great tsk tsking the Israelis? A comparison could be made: The Israelis refusing the terrorist delivery of weapons to Gaza and our Arizona citizens putting their foot down over the filth storming our border with mexico!!! Unbelievably, the democrat/leftists rail over both Israel AND Arizona.
C white| 6.3.10 @ 3:27PM
Turk,
Your religious mentor is correct. I firmly believe that the only thing that has kept this country from losing God's blessing altogether in this age of abortion and hedonism is our relationship with Israel. When we abandon her, God will abandon us (as a nation). His Word says that Israel's enemies shall be God's enemies and Israel's friends, God's friends. I believe the last thread that still connects this nation to Him is Israel. And our President is about to cut that thread.

Thank you so much for those quotes. I had not seen those words in many years.
The Bible indicates that the Jews will be in Jerusalem when Jesus returns. I'll go with that.
God bless Israel.

I see the armageddonites are out in full force.
There is a huge problem on the right with those that keep trying to get the United States involved in war in the Middle East on religious grounds. Wars that aren't in our best interest. The same nickel and dime hacks that said Iraq would be a two week wonder are pushing for war with Iran. There's nothing conservative about them. They're radicals. Dangerous radicals.
GW| 6.3.10 @ 12:58PM
Name one person on the right trying to get the US into a war on religious grounds.
William R| 6.3.10 @ 1:34PM
The Evangelical wing of the Republican party. NeoCons. It is a very toxic mixture. That's why we attacked Iraq. After they insured Bush it would be a two week wonder they wanted to go to Syria, Iran Saudi, Hezbollah, Hamas etc etc.
http://zfacts.com/p/165.html
Supported by National Review, most of conservative talk radio, etc etc. This bogus war on terror is every thing President Eisenhower warned the American people about on Jan 17, 1961. And I think it is safe to say Obama wouldn't be President today if Bush had listened to an old warrior like Colin Powell instead of Chicken Hawk Dick Cheney.
GW| 6.3.10 @ 4:25PM
I didn't know Billy Graham and Rick Warren were so influential in the rightful disposing of Sadaam Hussein. I also didn't know NeoCons and Evangelicals are the same thing. I asked you to name one right winger who, on RELIGIOUS grounds, wants to get the US into a war and you can't. We can debate the merits of certain wars, but outing yourself as a godless pagan certainly doesn't help your argument.

I can hardly agree, unless Hillyer writes with a hint of sarcasm, that the Prophet would not approve of the jihadists attacking the Jews. Read the Koran.
John II| 6.3.10 @ 12:18PM
Yes--that parenthetical aside articulates a useless and probably dangerous qualification that's been de rigueur ever since President Bush, in the wake of 9/11, uttered the political inanity that Islam is a "religion of peace." It would have been infinitely more of service to truth and more eloquently politic if he had just kept his mouth shut.
Dante places the Prophet deep in the bowels of Hell, in the ninth bolgia of the eighth circle--and that was fully 700 years after the Prophet had plied his trade as a "sower of discord," a very serious form of fraud. But Dante's moral clarity itself came 700 years before the advent of political correctness in a morally vacuous and rootless western consciousness.
Ryan| 6.3.10 @ 11:08AM
Though I'm not completely convinced of the Dispensationalist view of Revelation (nor of Covenant Theology), we need to remember one thing about the pronouncement of the Jews as "God's people." It includes Christians, per Paul:
Gal 3:7-9
7Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham.
8The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "ALL THE NATIONS WILL BE BLESSED IN YOU."
9So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.
Now, I'm NOT saying that there isn't anything peculiar about the Jews - they clearly have some sort of favor with God, even if they don't embrace Jesus as Messiah; it doesn't necessarily mean their salvation (John Hagee is wrong here).
Most people don't know that Dispensationalism is a VERY recent theology (late 1800s, near the start of modern evangelicalism), and that a more general view - rather than specific - of Revelation and end-times theology has more adherents in historical Christianity.
I'm NOT saying Dispensationalists are wrong...it's just they have a lot more to think about than they realize - that hyper-literal translations of prophecy don't always work.
We Know| 6.3.10 @ 1:10PM
What the Jews have is: that God honors His Word. Even though the Jews have n0t recognized Jesus as the Christ, God has not given up on them. Just as God has not given up on many of those who have expressed their evil comments on this article. God has a plan whereby a remnant shall be saved. This is truly playing out before our eyes right now. Israel is being backed into a corner. God is actually not happy with the Jews giving land away - and particularly concerning Jerusalem. There shall come a 7 year peace treaty to which God says: Isaiah 28:18, "And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it." At 3.5 years the peace treaty shall be violated. 1 Thessalonians 5:3, "For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape." When it looks like all is lost, then Israel shall turn to Christ and He shall roar out of heaven on a white horse to save them.

At least, according to an extremely literal interpretation.
Don't be surprised if it happens differently.

I wonder whether you would slide down a rope onto a ship armed with a paintball gun and a handgun (for emergencies only).
Why do you think these Israelis had to resort to their emergency weapons?
Why has Hamas shot over 6,000 rockets into Israel?
Why, encapsulated in the Hamas constitution, is stated the express desire to extinguish the state of Israel?
Why have multiple Islamic countries sought to destroy Israel -time and again?
Why do arabs deny the existence of a Hebrew nation, with Jerusalem as its capital, covering the between the Mediterranean and the River Jordan?
Why do arabs deny the existence of a Jewish temple in Jerusalem?
Why do you think Muslims want to buid a huge Muslim mosque as close as possible to the World Trade Center which, I seem to recall, ceased to exist on September 11 about ten years ago?

How can YOU possibly portray a terrorist flotilla as "demonstrators?"
Perhaps you can explain why three of these harmless "demonstrators" proclaimed themselves "martyrs" and prepared their wills just days before their little cruise?
Or maybe you can explain the videotape evidence of a group of these "peaceful souls" bludgeoning an individual IDF member with metal pipes as he lay already bleeding and defenseless on the deck of the ship?
Please enlighten us as to the videotape evidence of these peace demonstrators tossing a man overboard who now lays in a hospital with brain damage.
And maybe while you're at it you can tell us the last time a large group of "peaceful humanitarians" just happen to be armed with lead pipes so they could gang up on a solitary, unarmed man.
"Demonstrators." Oh, they demonstrated all right. They demonstrated who they truly are and what they truly are about. This wasn't the SS Minnow lost in a three hour tour, my friend. This was a set-up, pure and simple.

Cwhite: "How can YOU possibly portray a terrorist flotilla as "demonstrators?"
Just to add something to your excellent comment, Cwhite.
The "demonstrators" announced that they are on the way to deliver 10,000 tones of humanitarian supplies to Gazans. For this amount of cargo you need an average, closer to small ship - not a flotilia of 6 vessels, one of them (The Navi Marmara) a luxury cruise liner with no cargo holds at all but with enough cabins to accomodate about 700 people.
What's the cost of 10,000 tones of goods supposedly existentially needed in Gaza, and what's the cost of hiring 6 ships, wining and dining the whole bunch of activists on board of them, etc.?
Those who paid the bill for this racket couldn't care less about the "poor Gazans".

I'm a liberal Democrat and, like most Americans of both parties, a strong defender and supporter of Israel. Irrespective of one's religious views, Israel is the historic home of the Jewish people. When the world was carving up the old Ottoman Empire after WWI, and creating a host of new states in the region -- including arabic "Jordan" out of the major portion of Palestine -- it was entirely appropriate to support the creation of a small Jewish state as well. Out of all the new nations created in the area, only Israel has turned out to be politically democratic, economically dynamic, and religiously tolerant. In their constant effort to avoid extinction by their neighbors, do they make mistakes sometimes? Yes. But they have earned our support, and deserve it.

Israel has lost it's most important ally, the United States. The Israeli's live in the world's worst neighborhood. They are surrounded by a billion bloodthirsty savages, intent on murdering their children and driving their nation and their race from the Earth.
The Israeli's are nuts. Any sane person would move. Let the crazies keep the Middle East. Let them turn it into an even worse desert. Let them turn Jerusalem into another festering shithole. The Jews would be far better off if the entire Israeli nation relocated to the U.S. -- and the U.S. would be lucky to have them as citizens.

mzk1| 6.3.10 @ 12:17PM
I'm afraid you need to learn some history. The history of Jews in that area (and Eastern Europe) was a lot like the Black in the old South. You were all right if you "knew your place", until the Moslems suspected you might be getting "uppity".
Not that I DON'T blame the British. But actually it's the Russians who forced the Ottomans into war. The British (and the French, don't forget!) inherited it when the Germans sent Lenin in a sealed train to Russia to start the revolution.

Jay| 6.3.10 @ 12:00PM
As a Jew, I chafe at this notion that the survival of the Jews through history is something providential and a part of God's plan.
Jews have survived as a distinct people because of Jewish values and a religious tradition which is rational without all of the afterlife and final judgment nonsense that radicalizes other traditions. The irrational belief in an afterlife motivates and gives radicals license to trash this world and this life for their eternal "reward" in heaven.
mzk1| 6.3.10 @ 12:19PM
It seems you have no knowledge of Judaism. Christians got the idea of Heaven and Hell (and Purgatory!) from us. It's all over the rabbinical writings, not to mention Josephus.
The "religion" you claim to believe in was invented in the 19th century, if not later.
Jay| 6.4.10 @ 3:59AM
I would agree that Judaism has its share of esoteric beliefs, many of which influenced Christian thought and belief. But it would also not be correct to assume that these beliefs are exclusively Jewish. They were quite common among many of the ancient mystery cults, and Christianity borrows heavily from Mithraism.
But back to my original point, keep biblical history/prophesy out of the reasons for why Israel should or should not exist as it does today.

The muslims were not even a people when the Bible was written. There is an entity upon this earth composed of some 2-3 billion people. Their writings condemn both Christians and Jews. They have set themselves against Israel and greatly desire Jerusalem. Their preferred method of execution is taking off the head by the sword. They are the principle mechanism for terrorism in the world today. They say they believe in a Jesus, but deny He is the Son of God or that He rose from the dead. Pray for discernment and then read the signs that Jesus gave for the end of time.
Ryan| 6.3.10 @ 3:59PM
We can only read the signs and then speculate...because we don't know.
We Know| 6.3.10 @ 4:25PM
I beg to differ. After giving the signs, Jesus said: Matthew 24:33, "So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors." The signs were not given so that we "don't know." As a for-instance look at the data on worldwide earthquakes. The intensity and frequency is greatly increasing - likened to a woman in birth pangs.
Ryan| 6.3.10 @ 4:47PM
That's been happening since Christ said it was going to.
Here's the more important part - that his word will be spread to every nation (reads better as "people group." Study the 10/40 window and how it's shrinking...and that it will take a bit longer to do so.
We, as Christians, have more important things to do than proclaim the apocalypse.
We Know| 6.3.10 @ 5:02PM
And here is an even more important part - watch what happens to Israel, and more importantly Jerusalem. Zechariah 12:2, Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem." This is coming very soon. The nations are raging! I might point out that most of Judah is what is now called the West Bank.
Abdulameer| 6.3.10 @ 12:06PM
Hillyer is really off base when he writes: "So do hateful murderous Arabs and Muslims, fomenting murder masked as religion,..." Doesn't Hillyer know anything about Islam?
Here is a sampling of the doctrines of Islam which motivate the hearts and minds of all religious Moslems:
FROM THE KORAN:
--“ the (only) religion (acceptable) before God is Islam." (3:19)
-- " If anyone desires a religion other than Islam, never will it be accepted of him." (3: 85)
-- “You are the noblest community ever raised up for mankind.” (3:110)
-- The unbelievers among the people of the book and the pagans shall burn forever in the fire of Hell. They are the vilest of all creatures. (98.6).
-- Surely the vilest of animals in Allah’s sight are those who disbelieve. (8.55)
--The unbelievers are your inveterate enemy. (4:101)
-- Mohammed is God's apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another. (48:29).
-- It is unlawful for a believer to kill another believer, accidents excepted. (4:92)
-- Believers, take neither the Jews nor the Christians for your friends. (5:51)
-- Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and God's religion shall reign supreme. (8:40)
-- Fight against them until idolatry is no more and God's religion reigns supreme. (2:193)
-- The true believers fight for the cause of God, but the infidels fight for the devil. (4:76)
-- We will put terror into the hearts of the unbelievers. (3:151)
-- I shall cast terror into the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, strike off the very tips of their fingers. (8:12)
FROM THE SAYINGS OF MUHAMMAD:
-- Muhammad said to the Jews: "If you embrace Islam, you will be safe. You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle, and I want to expel you from this land. “
-- Allah's Apostle said, "You (i.e. Muslims) will fight with the Jews till some of them will hide behind stones. The stones will (betray them) saying, 'O 'Abdullah (i.e. slave of Allah)! There is a Jew hiding behind me; so kill him.' "
-- Mohammed said, "I have been ordered to fight with the people till they say, "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and whoever says, " None has the right to be worshipped but Allah , his life and property will be saved by me." (otherwise it will not).
-- Mohammed said, "Whoever changes his Islamic religion, kill him."
-- Mohammed said, " No Muslim should be killed for killing a Kafir" (infidel).
-- Muhammad said: "Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war, …"
In addition, the most popular manual of Islamic sacred law, approved by the highest Islamic religious authorities of Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, says: "Jihad means to make war on non-Muslims." What could be clearer than that?
And, how about this:
Ayatollah Khomeini, the most important Moslem leader of the 20th Century, said: "Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those who say this are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! Does this mean that Muslims should sit back until they are devoured? Islam says: Kill them, put them to the sword and scatter their armies.... Islam says: whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People cannot be made obedient except with the sword! the sword is the key to Paradise, which can be opened only for the Holy Warriors! There are hundreds of other Koranic psalms and Hadiths urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all this mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim."
And, how about this:
From Jihad in Islam by Sayyeed Abdul A'la Maududi, one of the most prolific and most widely read and influential Islamic writers of the 20th Century:
“The goal of Islam is to rule the entire world and submit all of mankind to the faith of Islam. Any nation or power that gets in the way of that goal, Islam will fight and destroy.”
All of this is Islam -- the faith, the belief system, the ideology. This is not "murder masked as religion". This is the religion of murder.

This is definitely islam - an ideology of hate and war. Their hand is against everyone. It is for this reason, that they CAN NEVER make peace with Israel of Christianity.
Paul| 6.3.10 @ 1:15PM
It looks to me like all of you zealots are nuts. The middle east would be a lot better place without all you people gleaning your "rights" to land from ancient fictional texts.
If God really were on any of your side's then I think that side would have prevailed by now.
We Know| 6.3.10 @ 1:24PM
Paul, All of this shall take place in your generation. We are quickly...I dare say exponentially...accelerating to the end. There is a tremendous spiritual war taking place on the earth today. Those who have eyes to see are involved. Pray to God that He give you eyes to see (a seeking repentant heart).

Any true believer in Islam sees the world in 2 possible states:
Dar Al hareb
Dar Al Islam
Dar Al Hareb is a permanent state of war : Their hand is against everyone until the Infidels convert to Islam.
Dar Al Islam is when we will all be Muslim and the world will be at peace because they either convinced all of us to convert and pray to a black obilisk in Mecca or they killed those that refused.
If we TRULY look at Islam is and what it wants, you have to either go on the offensive or preempt them.
Just look at the Royal Saudi Arabian flag. The Arabic script:
"There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah"
Then look below the script and what do you see? A sword! That says it all. What is the symbol of a Jihadist? A knife or sword. What the weapon of choice used by the Jihadists on the Turkish/Jihadist flotilla to stab Israeli commandos armed with paintball guns? KNIFE! That's it folks, pretty darn simple so let's place our Latte Starbucks coffee aside and see the world of Islam as it truly is, not...the religion of peace...

The danger in all this for the West is that its wise and good politicians might be inclined, some good long can kick down the road, to begin treating radical Islam as a force of Nature, much as we do lightning, and require—perhaps demand in some instances—that the rest of us become more and more accepting of radical Islam’s militancy, perhaps even of its atrocities. The dysfunctional character of the entire Western political class cannot be underestimated and one might even become wealthy betting against it.

Dear Jay. If the mighty one of Israel is not in it how can it be called religion?
Gerald Stephens| 6.3.10 @ 12:27PM
THE ANSWER...
is as stated by this author, egomania. A condition effected through mental masturbation practiced by non-Jews and Jews alike, which explains how both categories of progressive 'intellectuals' satiate the need to be more than reality bequeathed them.
The sirens heralding an oncoming tornado doubtless strike fear in those fortunate enough to hear the wail. Israel will never fall. The antagonists will be consumed by their own wind.
REMEMBER NOVEMBER!

One wonders, if the author of this piece of "existential truth" or in other words, a subjective form of truth, Mr. Hillyer as "addled" by a "chemical imbalance" as Mr. Barret. The affliction must be powerfully contagious for it has also affected the "brains" of the U.S. government.
Tom in Michigan| 6.3.10 @ 12:41PM
An excellent article aptly characterizing and describing the Jews, whether in Israel or elsewhere and their enemies as well.
Israel will indeed survive (and prosper!), as she and the Jews themselves have shown time and again that their enemies are no match for them either in physical, mental or moral prowess. One need only read the plethora of venomous posts here and elsewhere or see the recent demonstrations here and abroad to understand the loathsome nature of the anti-Semites who use every incident of Israel and the Jews asserting their God-given rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to ooze forth from their burrows to spew their Jew-hatred in order to understand why Israel is destined to be the ultimate victor.
These tiny creatures will turn to dust like Shelley’s Ozymandias himself but, the Jews will endure as they have for thousands upon thousands of years. It is this certainty of the anti-Semites’ cosmic insignificance in the face of an Eternal People which feeds their hatred. I would pity them if they worthy of any empathy whatsoever.
This country risks its very soul if it abandons Israel, a beacon of light and democracy (as were we once before succumbing to the false promises of the vile leftists who now control this nation and pervert its principles one-by-one) in an otherwise meanly benighted region. Shame on America if we allow this to happen.
We Know| 6.3.10 @ 12:51PM
True...the only thing left is for Israel to recognize that God is in control. This shall come as the armies of the earth surround Jerusalem. God's purposes shall be to bring Israel to a place of crying out to Him (and God alone), then God Almighty shall quickly dispose of her prideful arrogant enemies (be frightened oh islam - your prophets teachings shall be turned upon you).

Tom in Michigan| 6.3.10 @ 8:34PM
Yeah, well, you should be scared. You and all the other anti-Semites have aligned yourselves with History's inevitable losers. We will cast Islamofascism on the ash heap of history along with Fascism, Nazism, Communism and Statism and then; we will deal with the collaborators.
I know the left better than most of you because I'm an old 60s “rat” myself. I was close to these people before you were even a dirty thought in your Old Man’s brain. Speaking of the 60s, there's an old line from a Doors song ("Five to One”) that goes, "They got the guns, but we got the numbers."
Well, I've got news for you; we've got the guns AND the numbers. We won't go down easy. The anti-Semites will lose. Israel will be preserved and The United States of America will be reclaimed from the left, once and for all. Two of my friends have returned to the US military; one to the Green Berets, the other to the US Navy where he is now a Commander and a seasoned fighter pilot; doing “God’s work-killing the real bad guys” as he says. Another friend of mine has returned to Israel. He fought in the 1973 War and is a trained commando-too old to fight but, not too old to train. This is just the beginning of the popular groundswell of resistance. The “establishment” is now the despicable left. The resistance is the real Americans who believe in her first principles. What irony.
Get your mind right. Get out of your Mom's basement and quit listening to Bill Ayer's acolytes. Leave the dark side while you can.

Would you be defending Israel's actions if they were committed by Iran ?
Israel attacked and illegally boarded a relief ship in international waters and murdered 10 people and injured dozens more.
I support Israel when she is right but Israel went way too far. They became the terrorists !
Bram| 6.3.10 @ 1:20PM
Would Iran let hundreds of American "peace activists" land on its shores? Would the U.S. allow an Al Qaeda convoy to dock in Tijuana?
The people on these "relief ships" knew the deal - Gaza isn't a country, just a craphole run by a terrorist organization. They lost their right to a port after too many rockets came in and were used on Israel.
These people could not care less about Palestinians - they have been using their suffering for 60 years now. It's pathetic and disgusting.
Hate for Israel, anti-Semitism, and jealousy of Israeli freedom and prosperity are the only motivations for this crime.

Islam is of satan. There is no other rational explanation.
Pady| 6.3.10 @ 1:09PM
This is the most pathetic essay on Israel and US support I have ever read.
It is a list of historical fallacies and clearly shows that the author supports state terrorism, illegal wars , apartheid regimes and religious bigotry. Israel is in direct violation of more that 50 united nations resolutions, it harbors war criminal (as defined by the Geneva conventions), it does not respect international laws regulating high seas, it violates human rights for 43 years by not protecting civilian population and by blockading their access to the most basic food and medications. It violates the IV Geneva Conventions by denying the right to civilian populations to evacuate combat zones.
It spoils and steal the land of others, lies repeatedly to the international community. AND SO DO THE UNITED STATES.
The war in Irak is illegal and wages only to spoil Irakis from their wealth.
The war of Vietnam was started on the false pretense of an attack in the Tonkin gulf.
America lied regarding Pearl Harbor.
America supports dictatures: in Argentina, Guatemala, Colombia.
America attempts coups against democraticaly elected regimes: Venezuela, Iran.
America uses torture routinely in Guantanamo Abu-Graib and other illegal places.
America kills people all over the world because they oppose the empire policy.
Americas tried its armament on its own citizens.
America promotes a system where the few richest can spoil and exploit 90 percent of the rest of the population.
It evens falls on its citizens when they try to oppose a regime that can nowadays only be qualified as being a fascist financial and Militaro-Industrial regime.
Yeah. That is was Israel and America are. And

Greetings Ben and Norm
Another point in support of your argument.
In 2/22/2006 Saudi Wahhabi Jihadists nearly destroyed the Golden Mosque in a near successful attempt to foment a Sunni vs Shia civil war.
How peaceful is that sect of Islam to foment the mass death of both the Sunni and Shia so as to rule after both sides have military exhausted them selves. After all that was the way the Taliban rose to power after an Afghan Civil War burned itself out. The death of millions was not even commented upon by any of the usual “bleeding hearts”
In short Islam has shown it will kill any where between 15% to 50% of its population in the name of Allah just so one faction or sect can rule.

Calls for the safety and protection of Palestinian civilians to be ensured. Calls for the immediate resumption of negotiations within the Middle East peace process on its agreed basis and the timely implementation of the agreements reached. (The draft resolution was issued officially as a presidential text, which normally indicates unanimity prior to the vote.)
1322 07-Oct-00
Reaffirms that a just and lasting solution to the Arab and Israeli conflict must be based on its resolutions 242 (1967) of 22 November 1967 and 338 (1973) of 22 October 1973, through an active negotiating process. Deplores the provocation carried out at Al-Haram Al-Sharif in Jerusalem on 28 September 2000, and the subsequent violence there and at other Holy Places, as well as in other areas throughout the territories occupied by Israel since 1968, resulting in over 80 Palestinian deaths and many other casualties. Hey Ded,
You tried carpet bombing in Viet-Nam remember?
Bram| 6.3.10 @ 2:03PM
False. The U.S. bombed grid squares of jungle to interdict NVA supply routes. We never "carpet bombed" NV population centers.
We did bomb German and Japanese population centers in WWII - till the rubble bounced or burned.
ncatty| 6.3.10 @ 2:57PM
Apparently we are still bombing Germany. A WW2 500 kg bomb detonated in Goettingen this week, killing several.
cnv| 6.3.10 @ 3:37PM
Plenty of Iman call for and encourage the bombing of enemy civilian populations as part of an asymetric war policy. This policy however depends on the opponent being disproportionatly restrained. If the US followed the played along with the whole fatwah and wantonly kill civilians there would be nothing left.
It's time the US followed the teachings of Islam. Mercy is for the weak, its time to slaughter.

Actually I did read it and was hoping for more than a random brain droppings.
The longstanding standard naval practice is to stop a suspect ship with naval gunfire if it will not respond. It is also standard practice to search a ship with ARMED guards. The purpose in enforcing dictates with military force is to USE FORCE.
Israels problem was they tried to win brownie points by being “nice”.
I was just hoping for a higher level of analysis from Ben Stein.

Coming back and reading some of the subsequent posts just confirms what scum anti-Semites are.
The UN is a cesspool of anti-Semitism.
Devasahayam| 6.3.10 @ 2:29PM
Only problem here was comparing Useless Numpties to a cesspool; every cesspool or drainage-ditch which I have seen--and I have seen LOTS of them, particularly in Indian cities, some quite foul--compared to UN would seem as clean as a newly-opened swimming-pool!
Tom in Michigan| 6.3.10 @ 1:58PM
Further to my condemnation of anti-Semites. Barack's buddies were involved in this. From the American Thinker blog:
"Former Weather Underground leaders William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, as well as Code Pink founder Jodie Evans, helped organize the Free Gaza Movement, which launched the six-ship flotilla from Turkey to Israel that ended in a violent clash with Israeli Defense Forces, BigGovernment.com reported.
In January, the trio were spotted in Egypt attempting to stir up crowds on the streets with 1,400 other left-wing activists after the Egyptian government refused to allow Free Gaza Movement members to enter the Gaza Strip. About 100 marchers were eventually allowed to cross the border, where they were met by former Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyeh.
BigGovernment quotes author Philip Weiss, who wrote that he witnessed Ayers and Dohrn arguing with fellow activists over whether to accept Egypt's offer to allow a small number of them into Gaza:"

"Pady..Why if Muslims are so good..why do they kill each other?"
I have not said that Muslims were good.
If you make a reference to the Iran Irak war, well shall I remind you that this war was fueled on both sides by the occidental democracy who were really happy to sell weapons to both belligerents.
-Regarding the first gulf war shall I remind you that Koweit is a Muslim dictature artificially created at the end of the decolonization by the British empire and that historically it has been part of Irak f before Irak was dispossessed of it. Therefore, Irak had an historical right to recover it.
- Lebanon
The situation in Lebanon has been fueled for decades by Israel who illegaly invaded that country several times.
- Most of the Arabic countries are artificial creations who do not correspond to historical territories. An example is the situation of the Jurdes, who do not have a country, and whose faith was decided without their consent by the Turks the Brits.
SO yes there are and have been conflicts in the Arabic world but none of them has ever reached the scale of savagery of the conflicts waged by occident: Irak, Viet Nam, WW II, WW I, Colonization Wars, War of Opium, American Civil war, Spanish Civil war, French Revolution are just a few examples of the savagery of "democracies".
No country in the world has ever killed as many people as the United States of America. who by the way, started its history, by the genocide of American Indians.
So what you call violent terrorist Muslims are in reality national resistants defending their homeland.

You forgot about us being imperialists as well. If you live in the US, please leave. You are smelling up the continent.
I won't speak to the rest of your rubbish except to ask 'what did waring indian tribes do to one another?' They killed all the men, raped all the women and enslaved all the children. In other words they wiped them out, or to use your words committed genocide. Where is your condemnation of that? Hypocrite.

Every one of the wars you mentioned had monarchies/dictatorships on the wrong side of the war and democracies on the right side (if they were involved).
Muslims were running rampant in the Middle East since Mohammed, killing people.
And more deaths have been done in the name of pagan Nazism, atheistic communism, and militant Islamism than any Christianized nation.

Paddy| 6.3.10 @ 3:16PM
- How using white phosphorus and depleted uranium ammunition on civilians ranks in your Zionist mindset?
- Effectively, all the Germans from Prussia were evicted, so were the one of Czechia or the one living in Ukraine/ Good part of them were deported/massacred by the communists the other emigrated to Germany or other countries.
That is the reason why for example the city of Prague (Czech Rep.) has a German influenced architecture, as quite a few cities in Poland.

Okay, I agree - the Israelis should have evicted the Arabs living in the lands they won after each war, just like the Russians did to the Germans. They could have avoided the whole "Palestinian" problem.
The Arabs, after all, had lost badly in '56, '67, and '73.
"The ARABS had lost the war, they were not in a position to claim for anything, surely not for territory they presumably would have lived in 2000 years ago."
Devasahayam| 6.3.10 @ 2:26PM
Note; I rarely see (even among my own, which is a shame) comparisons/analogues of events affecting Israel to those affecting India--such as the fact that both nations have been throughout their independent (post-1945) history targets of Muslim aggression.
The specific analogue for the flotilla-raid is 1999 "Atlantique Incident" in which a Pakistan Navy reconnaisance aircraft (specifically, a French-built Atlantique) was shot down by Indian Air Force Squadron Leader P.K. Bundela. Pakistan shilled much about this, never getting consistent in its claims how far the aircraft was from the Indian border--though ALL of its claims would require the aircraft to have flown a considerable distance AFTER being shot down, no mean feat as it crashed in a region centred ONE mile inside Pakistan territory (and some debris falling in India due to dispersal). Given that Pakistan had committed aggression EARLIER in 1999 (and been repulsed) against India at Kargil, India showed great restraint in not launching war with its horrible western neighbour. Similarly, Israel--knowing full well that this flotilla was to aid Hamas which had committed many acts of open aggression against Israel and which will not (unlike Pakistan wrt India) even RECOGNISE Israel as a nation--showed great restraint by not sinking the flotilla straight-off!
Paddy| 6.3.10 @ 2:59PM
1 - HAMAS has been democratically elected by the Palestinian people and its legitimacy cannot be rebuffed.
2 - "Atlantique Incident"
The Pakistani place did no answer to the Indian warnings and was shot WITHIN the Indian waters the coordinates are the following: 23°54′N 68°16′E
3 - I'd like to bring to your attention that it is not the first time Israel commits an act of piracy against a disarmed ship. It already occurred against an AMRICAN SHIP the USS LIBERTY on June 8, 1967. Please see the following:

Hamas and Hezbollah remain illegitimate as long as they hold the Priories of Zion as fact and not proven fraud, and as long as they bilk their people out of millions of dollars, and as long as they hold eradication of a people as policy.
That has no place in the civilized world.
Talons of Judah| 6.4.10 @ 5:48AM
Paddy - How can you say that the HAMAS was democratically elected? They are a FACTION of the many factions within PLO society. They did indeed gain many seatas in the PLO Parliament but then they staged a VIOLENT COUP, killing HUNDREDS of Fatah supporters including throwing some off the top of tall buildings and blowing off the kneecaps of others (a' la IRA). So, perhaps a majority of Gazans voted for them but what about the rest of the PLO population living in the West Bank? hey're Palestinians too though they do not agree with HAMAS, they follow the so-called PLO "moderates" and hate HAMAS so wo represents the Palestinans - Christ! They're divided on how to kill the Jews...either quickly (HAMAS) or in a slow, "salami" fashion (FATAH). They are a terrorist organization who, since ISRAEL LEFT the Gaza strip have consistently shelled Israel's towns and cities! Where does this FREE Gaza thing come from? NO ISRAELI SITS IN GAZA today. Ask Israeli Arabs (they call themselves "Palestinians") or Ramallah-based (FATAH) Arabs, where they would want to raise thier kids - Gaza, under HAMASTAN rule or in Ramallah, under PLO (FATAH) rule? Ask 'em...

Since we carpet bombed Dresden (and many other German cities) in WWII, were the Allies brought up on charges at the Nuremberg Trial(s)? I don't recall...
Paddy| 6.3.10 @ 2:41PM
No they were not.
It still does not mean that these bombing do not qualify, in particular in the case of Dresden, as crime against humanity.

Andy I think you did not get it. No I would not expose my neck to their sword. But I would not take their land, bomb their families either.
Lets put it in figures:
During the last Israeli aggression the IDF killed:
Palestinian combatants 330/375
Palestinian non-combatants 762
Women 107
Minors/Children 318
Police officers 248
Palestinian TOTAL 1385
The israeli losses are:
Israeli combatants 10
Israeli non-combatants 3
Israeli TOTAL 13
So better said, for one Israeli dead, Israel killed 10 palestinians. Hitler was doing the same with Polish people during WWII when the polish resistance was killing one German.....
Source:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_War
I let you appreciate the crude reality of these figures.
Bram| 6.3.10 @ 2:38PM
Pady - Come on! Everyone knows that Israelis are worth far more than Palestinians. That is why the PLO and Hamas trade one Israeli soldier back for hundreds of captured Palestinians. Hamas can't be wrong on this topic.
paddy| 6.3.10 @ 2:40PM
Yeah, and New York rabbis don't get it wrong either when they trade organs, do they?
Bram| 6.3.10 @ 3:08PM
Actually, here in the U.S. we have what is called "rule of law," so the rabbis in question will be doing their teaching from the jailhouse.
Paddy| 6.3.10 @ 4:35PM
I guess it is not Guantanamo where the US detain civilians illegally and without the right to trial ...
You know, that torture center opened by the Bush administration and that Obama promised to close...
Evidently, it is not going to happen, the freed prisoners would talk.
Regarding the rule of law I shall remind you that the confiscation of weapons during the military operations in the new Orlean area following hurricane Katrina are in direct violation of the second amendment of the american constitution. Regarding the deployment of the military on the territory of the United States it is in contradiction with the Posse Comitatus Act. The patriot act actually grants the right to the federal state to detain indefinitely Americans and denies the right to due course of justice.
I shall also remind you that the Executive Order: Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq, has such a wide scope that it allows the confiscation of the properties of anybody who would dare to oppose the American policy in the middle east.
So, yes, Rule of Law as you say, I'd say Rule Of Dictatorial Law, denial of freedom of expression, denial of right to trial, denial of human rights, use of the army against civilian populations, coercion, intimidation, propaganda. The attributes of a dictature, not of a democracy.

Paddy, the Arabs...oops, sorry, the Palestinians outnumber the Israelis and seek Israel's destruction. The PLO, HAMAS, HIZBOLLAH and a myriad of other militias couldn't give a rat's ass about their own people as they use them as human shields. Besides, they see themselves as a martyr or "Shaheed". Would you feel better if more Jews died? Would this conflict be more fair & balanced if the data was 10,000 Israeli dead to 10,000 Palestinians dead? Don't you get it yet? They want their people to suffer in order to redirect their hate & rage away from their corrupt regimes. Do you know how many Palestinians were wiped out in the Lebanese army siege of Nahr al-Bared in 2007? They blasted the feces out of the refugee camp killing thousands...yes Lebanese killing Palestinians. Where were you then?

The prophet IS an evil ape. It is the cause AND the prophet that are to blame. The "radical" islamists are the REAL islamists. They practice what is actually preached. "I think there are closer relations between Jews and Muslims then between Jews and Christians. For Muslims do not eat pork, as well as Jews. Islam did not wage crusades nor persecuted the Jews as the Christians did in Europe."

THEREFORE HOW & WHY THE MUSLIMS HAVE SUDDENLY DECIDED TO KILL EVERY JEW LIVING ON THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH ???
Brian ought to answer!!!
The Jews do not believe in Jesus's(Pbuh) prophethood because he did not save himself from the cross {Deuteronomy 21:22-23}.
The Christians believe Jesus died for our sins, and is a 1/3 of God. Also, abolishment of the Law of Moses (Acts 13:39).
In fact, the years between 900 and 1200 in Spain and North Africa are known as the Hebrew "golden age," a sort of Jewish Renaissance that arose from the fusion of the Arab and Jewish intellectual worlds. Jews watched their Arab counterparts closely and learned to be astronomers, philosophers, scientists, and poets.
In response to Brians allegation that "The world has turned a deaf ear to Israel, and listened to the lies of it's enemy. An enemy who only wants to kill every Jew from the face of the earth" my reply is ;

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE
LAWS OF WAR IN ISLAMIC JIHAD
Many people asked about Islam & Jihad so I brought some scripts about it to let people know that Islam not only was forgiving but also put the basis of modern laws of war this is not everything there is more & more scripts but this will give the general idea about the whole thing
During his life, Muhammad (Pbuh) gave various injunctions to his forces and adopted practices toward the conduct of war. The most important of these were summarized by Muhammad's(Pbuh) companion, Abu Bakr(Ra), in the form of ten rules for the Muslim army:
"Stop, O people, that I may give you ten rules for your guidance in the battlefield. Do not commit treachery or deviate from the right path. You must not mutilate dead bodies. Neither kill a child, nor a woman, nor an aged man. Bring no harm to the trees, nor burn them with fire, especially those which are fruitful. Slay not any of the enemy's flock, save for your food. You are likely to pass by people who have devoted their lives to monastic services; leave them alone."
These injunctions were honored by the second Caliph, Umar, during whose reign (634–644) important Muslim conquests took place. These principles were also honoured during the Crusades, as exemplified by sultans such as Saladin and al-Kamil. For example, after al-Kamil defeated the Franks during the Crusades, Oliverus Scholasticus praised the Islamic laws of war
Commenting on how al-Kamil supplied the defeated Frankish army with food: "Who could doubt that such goodness, friendship and charity come from God? Men whose parents, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, had died in agony at our hands, whose lands we took, whom we drove naked from their homes, revived us with their own food when we were dying of hunger and showered us with kindness even when we were in their power."
Please FORWARD this column of mine , to EDUCATE & ENLIGHTEN the IGNORANTS
& the NOT SO IGNORANTS about what the TRUTH is about the Muslims & Islam and how we have been DEMONIZED by the enemies of not only Islam, but humanity.

And I shall also remind that the Iranians during the war against Irak never shot a missile to an Iraki town, because they repected a fatwa of Ayatollah Komeiny prohibiting it.

- They are not terrorist, they are RESISTANTS defending their illegally occupied country and seeking freedom for their oppressed and dispossessed people.
The Israelis themselves used that kind of method bellow are some references, so I don't see how they could blame others for turning back on them doing the same.

Paddy, where's the list of Arab/Islamic/Turkish/Persian/Palestinan atrocities carried out against Israelis, Jews, Armenians, Kurds and other Muslims. You don't even have an internet page long enough for all of them so while Israelis did do bad things in the past THEY ADMIT THEIR SINS and apologize and BTW look at the date of your last entry...1956! How many innocents have been killed by the PLO and the other factions since 1956??? Ask Saeb Erekat, Hanan Ashwrari and a host of other Arafat croonies who escaped by the skin of thier teeth from HAMAS. Those folks are happy to be living in Ramallah and nowhere near Gaza where they would be executed by their...brothers.

In todays WSJ on the front page there was a? analysis or oppinion--it was NOT NEWS--that included a few cliches thaty I just love. First the "botched raid". What would have been a non botched raid: a) let the flotilla go thru ? b) kill no one and allow ten Israelis get killed ? or c) Board the ship do hypnosis on the crew and all sing Hava Na Gila together ? e) Something completely different .
The second idea is Israelis losing friends. Friends: What friends. The EU ? Really !!! the US under Obama, what friend --with such friends who needs enemies. Russia, in no way, Turkey--they are going down the Islamist road more and more every dy, And they are in NATO ?
Israel and Jews in general are into survival. We have lots of practice.

The amount of resolutions condemning is very long indeed. So is the list of Israel's enemies. None of them democratic. Yet they use the power of their numbers to get Israel convicted in the UN courts. People are blind to this because they believe the UN is somehow impartial, whereas it's only contribution to the Arab-Israeli conflict is to enable it to go on.
Yes I believe Israel is a mistake. It Is a mistake because we underestimated the power of anti-semitism and we never could conceive the Europe would embrace the Arab world to such an extend. Perhaps in order to rid itself of the guilt of the Holocaust, as they see Muslims as persecuted Jews. Hating Israel is a catharsic experience, it means freedom. Witness the embrace of the left and militant Islam.
They won't give us the light of day. They'll keep pushing, and they will be more. And everyday they are more still. The left which does not tolerate critical words about Islam is slowly turning on the heat. They find permission in the conflict to hate Israel, they confirm Islamic hate, they back it up and it reflects back. Bringing it here, and to your shores as well.
And the fighting is ugly, you have to admit. A Palestinian docter who lives in Gaza but has good connections in Israel looses his daughter in the battle in Gaza. What can one say to such a tragedy.
Realising this one realises the decision of the pro Palestinian Jews. It is hard to resist the growing majority. Muslims will do everything they can to destroy Israel, Israel will do everything it can to survive. The longer it does the guiltier it becomes because this fight is bloody. If it's not defeated it will be executed for warcrimes.
It's nice to know there is this powerful force that exists to protect you. That will sacrifice for you, even if you only contributed a few years to its existance. It's strong but not invincible.
Heroes will die, and when they're dead that's it.
Paddy| 6.3.10 @ 5:43PM
" Hating Israel is a catharsic experience": So, according to you, anti-Israel would hate Israel because they feel guilty for having hated the Jews? Some are Anti-Zionist because they feel guilty for having been anti-Semitic? I am sorry but this is total gibberish.
Acknowledging that Israel behaves with the Palestinians like the German behaved with the Polish during WWII (Ghetto of Varsaw=Gaza Strip) is simply logical. Same methods, same goals, same disrespect for international laws and human rights the fact is blatant: Israel behaves in Gaza like the Nazi in Poland.
I don't like Nazi's, my uncle died during WWII, my grand father was a POW in Germany, my mum was a refugee in France. So stop posing as a victim while you are in fact the executioner.
"Muslims will do everything they can to destroy Israel"
False. Israel was on its way for full international recognition, but refused to withdraw its troops and occupies illegally territories for 43 years, violating international laws.
So Mulims countries have the right to attempt to recover the land that has been stolen from them.
"Israel will do everything it can to survive"
Nobody has any doubt about that. It is the reason why Israel has an undeclared nuclear arsenal and refuses any inspection. It is therefore a threat to the whole middle east and Iran in particular.
Talons fo Judah| 6.5.10 @ 2:13AM
Well, well, well Paddy, you finally stated the whole crux of the anti-semetic, anti-Israel campaign that's been waged continuously since 1948 and expecially after the 1982 Sabra and Shatilla massacre in Lebanon, carried out by the Gemayel Christian militia.
I am proud of you Paddy that you stated this:
"Acknowledging that Israel behaves with the Palestinians like the German behaved with the Polish during WWII (Ghetto of Varsaw=Gaza Strip) is simply logical. Same methods, same goals, same disrespect for international laws and human rights the fact is blatant: Israel behaves in Gaza like the Nazi in Poland".
Paddy, the Israel is a Nazi, Palestinian is the Jew victim analogy is greatest distortion and blasphemy ever circulated.
My father fought in WWII, bombed Germany, my Uncle killed in France by a German sniper so we all fought Facism. Now, you're lending a hand to the new Islamofacism.
The systematic, industrial murder of Jewish (and other peoples) men, women and children can in no way be compared to the interaction between Israel and her neighbors. What gall! If you are a student of history please do not cloud the reality of events with your bigotry. Ask anybody from that generation, any vet, READ! Israel has made Peace with those countries who seek peace, made war on those countries and peoples who made war on her. Israeli Jews are trying to strike a balance between a constant war footing and being the only Democratic, Western, Liberal, free-,market society in the Middle East.
I have to give you credit for openly saying what so many Israel haters imply with all their propaganda - the Palestinian being the new Jewish victim...it helps obtain evil political ends, but ultimately, it is wrong and a blatant lie so Paddy, side with the terrorists and Islamofacists...it's ok, at least I can respect your honesty and openess.

Folks,
I am truly glad these tools of satan show up here. They remind us to stay "locked and cocked".
It truly looks to me that Obama and crew want the holy-war to begin.
They forget TWO things:
1. Our military defends our constitution, not Obama.
There is no question in my mind that our military will side with "we the people". They will have to do so in a little bit of a convoluted fashion... ie: "your orders were garbled, sir".
2. No one in history has even thought of defeating 70 million snipers/guerillas/patriots.
We, in the final analysis will only be provoked so far, before we simply END these communists, (pardon the shorthand), and their muslim/fascist barbarian brothers.
Do I really get to get to take part in the battle of Armegeddon? (I am honored, Father.)
So let it begin if it is God's will.

And I think you wont do anything about it. I think though that your economy is going to be ruined by yourselves and that your fancy dreams of empire are just vanishing as you read this.

I have no comment on the religious back and forth above beyond noting Heinlein’s remark that one man’s theology is another man’s belly laugh. I’d rather look at the substantive issue facing Israel and the United States which is that we have a president who cannot be counted upon either to support Israel or to defend the interests of the US in the Middle East. Whether Obama is an anti-Semite (such as his doppelganger Jimmy Carter has been revealed to be) or merely weak and wrong on policy is a matter for conjecture. What is not is that this has created a situation ripe for war – with Israel perhaps believing it must act alone and its enemies perhaps believing that they can act with impunity as far as the United States is concerned. Our policy toward Iran in particular needs to toughen up and toughen up fast.
As to the UN’s treatment of Israel, it is outrageous, typical but outrageous. It is way past time for the US (and any other civilized nation so inclined) to quit that corrupt organization and try something else.
John II| 6.3.10 @ 6:03PM

Tim*,
Most every Christian I have ever buried told me about their own personal apocalypse. As I held their hand when they died, I prayed.... out loud... "Father, into Your grace, I commend (Name)... this person."

That was their "apocalypse."

First, some facts.
The Biblical Anti-fugitive Slave law
" If a slave has taken refuge with you, do not hand him over to his master. Let him live among you wherever he likes and in whatever town he chooses. Do not oppress him." Deut 23:15,16 .
Second, if a master beat a slave who then died within three days of receiving injury, it was murder.
A slave that converted to Judaism would then become free under the seven years rule that applied to all Israelites. Christians, being 'spiritual Israel' nonetheless did not free their slaves as they became Christians.
By these standards alone, American slavery as it was violated the Biblical rules for servitude.
Any thoughts on this?

Our situation is much worse than anybody suspects. Abu Hussein al-Nairobi (or whatever miserable Kenyan village he was born in), our illustrious and superintelligent Community Organizer-in-Chief, is bent on several main tasks:
1) As a communist revolutionary he wants to nationalize private enterprise - automobile companies, insurance and mortgage companies, oil & gas companies, coal mines, banks, hospitals...
2) As a secret Muslim he wants to eliminate Israel, and also to eliminate by his judges all mention of Christianity from public discussions and in schools;
3) With 47% of population that is already on the dole and that pays no income taxes, he already has almost the permanent majority of votes; with the coming amnesty of 15 million illegal aliens his majority will go well over 55% - and that means permanent power;
4) His aim is also to unionize everybody, with the marxist gangsters in charge; and finally
5) He intends to silence Fox and conservative radio by the new laws; also, he will put a stop to Internet comments from his "enemies".

Bigfoot| 6.3.10 @ 7:46PM
Bernardo, you are right. The UN no longer serves the interest of a peaceful world order - OR a just one. As for the Jews and the Ishmaelite Arabs, the latter own by birthright the Arabian Peninsula, and by conquest the entirity of North Africa and Mesopotamia, and by religeous conversion, usually at swordpoint, vast other regions of the world. They own not only deserts but great rivers and productive valleys, bustling port cities, and above all one third of the oil wealth of the entire world. The Jews have only a fraction of their small homeland. It was given to them by God, and later vouchsafed by Great Britain and the Allies. They have created within that tiny enclave a powerful and democratic nation. The Arabs have created the fiction that their prophet ascended to heaven from the Temple Mount of Jerusalem, thereby seeking to legitimate the exclusion of Jews and Christians from a foothold in the Ummah. The Crusades were a justified campaign to retake the Christian holy sites that had been overrun and desecrated by the Arabs. The brutality of the Crusaders, while regrettable, was nothing more than common practice among all armies of that day, Saracens not excepted. And the blood they shed was a drop in the bucket compared to the blood shed by the ensueing Mongol and Turkish invaders.
Now the Jews are beset on all sides by their enemies. A Muslim President in America, and the European nations who once vouchsafed the Jewish homeland, are making common cause with Muslim fanatics and the secular spawn of Nazism in the Arab world. War is approaching. If it falls upon us, Isreal, for its part, will prevail. But the Pax Americana that we all have taken for granted will be no more.

“Nobody does Israel any service by proclaiming its 'right to exist.'
Israel's right to exist, like that of the United States, Saudi Arabia and 152 other states, is axiomatic and unreserved. Israel's legitimacy is not suspended in midair awaiting acknowledgement.
There is certainly no other state, big or small, young or old, that would consider mere recognition of its 'right to exist' a favor, or a negotiable concession.” (Abba Eban - New York Times, November 18, 1981).

Jews will always survive. They have survived all of history's tyrannies. They will survive those to come. They will survive the political foolishness of their own people in the USA. They will survive the fall of Israel, should it come to pass. GOD has seen to it and HE will continue to see to it. All it takes is a fool to believe mainstream media's shameful, biased reporting of these tragic events. Watch the video--the FULL video, not the sanitized Hamas version--and see for yourself that Israel was only defending herself. What kind of peace workers continue to beat a man with iron pipes--and about 12 against 1, into the bargain--after he is down on the deck? This was a set up by Muslim-loving, anti-semitic forces, pure and simple. What kind of journalists accept at face value a video delivered by the self-described victim/martyrs of the piece and refuse to air the full video showing the shameful, violent acts leading up to it? American liberal ones, appparently. Israel has a right and a duty to protect its citizens.

I will continue to do all I can as an American citizen and voter to provide unqualified support to Israel. I will keep supporting this vital cause until the enemy realises that if they want peace, there will be peace. But I am very worried that more difficult times for Israel are at hand. So this is the time for its supporters to speak up, to avoid complacency, to resist bad reporting adn to speak up. Long live Israel, your friends will not desert you.

What is amazing is that the Liberal European West (like the Irish now) condemn Israel as a knee-jerk, you wont attack me, right? attitude towards the Islamofacists. Israel is at the forefront of Western values and everytime they get attacked by the Liberal West, it is as if Islam succeeds in driving a wedge between the same (Judeo-Christian) peoples. Neither side is going to relent, until one side relents. I can understand both sides, but neither of those sides can understand the other! You are both obstinate, both a terrorist to the other and both kill defenceless people, innocent people as part of what you call your righteous cause. All your arguments for doing this are meaningless in the passing of time. All you are both doing to each other is perpetuating a horror for each other, I think the criminal activities of both sides and the ability to ignore and try to justify these criminal events indicates you must all be brain dead!
Nick| 6.4.10 @ 2:09PM
What a ridiculous diatribe.
Do you know how many French civilians we killed, by bombing, leading up to D-Day? Were we also terrorists?
The people responsible for all civilian deaths, on both sides, are the terrorists who belong to Hamas, Hezbollah, and the former PLO.
Talons of Judah| 6.5.10 @ 5:42AM
Ian, of course it is very easy for you to sit on the sidelines and look "objectively" at both sides' behavior as being equally bad.
Let's assume you reside in England for a moment. What would you do, how would you feel if England was being blitzed with thousands of Kassam or larger, more lethal weapons on a regualr basis? Would you tolerate it? Did Britain tolerate it in 1940? Are the scales of moral justice equal here?
Let's try another analogy (assuming, again you are from the UK). Suppose the IRA and Shin Fein claimed that London was their capital and that the only way to wrest it back from England was through the "armed struggle". Suppose they sent armadas of "ACTIVISTS" to your shores attempting to provide aid to the "impoverished" Irish? What would that scenario look like. In order to defend their national interests, the UK sent warships all the way to the Argentine in 1982 to defend British interests...all the way to the Argentine! Israel is defending its coasts, cities and maritime waters after years of constant bombardment! NO ISRAELI SITS IN GAZA so from whom are we supposed to Free Gaza exactly?
Ian, I envy your armchair viewing position...

Two reasons American's should support Israel:
The Israelites of the old testament, and their modern descendants are a people guided by the essential goodness and wisdom of the Ten Commandments, a moral code offered to them without any justifications or stated penalties for disobedience. The ideas there came from the wisdom in the heart of all humans, it is a list of items that we all hold as truths in our hearts, it is the recognition and differentiation between basic good and evil in the world; that inner knowledge is the glow of God in all of us, the Jews were perhaps the first to hear the voice of it or at least write it down. For this reason, the Jews exist as a force for good in the world; all peoples and nations have made mistakes in the past, but the Jews have been and continue on a productive, humanitarian existence in modern times.
Also, Israel is America's greatest ally; Israel is a democracy and holds many of the same values as America, including tolerance and God given liberty. Israel is our only true ideological ally in a very dangerous section of the world. If America genuinely supports the idea of natural rights, then America must support Israel in the face of nations who would rule the world theocratically through governance by tyrants who would claim authority as theirs given directly from God and not from people. We can only grant the rights articulated in the Declaration of Independence to those people within our jurisdiction, but we have a duty to support those rights for all, that is why we are called, as American's, to support and preserve Israel. Are there flaws and national errors in American history? Certainly. But America remains the last great hope of the world in it's basic support of freedom, truth, and love. America, like Israel, is a force for good in the world, we must recognize our friends in the never ending struggle against tyranny. No great thing may be accomplished in our lifetimes, Moses lesson, however we have hope and strength as long as we are on the path of goodness and truth we will stand up wise upon the mountain and glimpse the promised land together.
Edward Gibbon| 6.4.10 @ 2:54AM
The trials and tribulations of God's chosen people continue- they began with the covenant with Abraham, and ever since have beset the Hebrews and their descendants with the full might of all the evil forces in the world, claiming populations with the venom of anti-Semitism from different cultures and with different histories and spawning new Assyrians, Chaldeans, Selucids and Romans throughout history. And when the West finally, inevitably abandons Israel, we will find out for ourselves what "I will bless those you bless you, and curse those who curse you" really means. God help us.

This article just caused me to cancel my American Spectator subscription.
Perhaps it's that, as a Finn and a friend of both Jews and Arabs, I can have a somewhat balanced "outside" view. Be that as it may, absolutely nothing can legitimate wanton killing of aid workers in international waters. That constitutes an act of piracy, and those attacked do have a right to defend themselves. Also, in last year's "war" a.k.a. Operation Cast Lead, the Israeli military machine indiscriminately killed about 1,400 Palestinians - including some 500 children - while 13 Israelis were killed, several of them in "friendly fire". Massive killing of civilians can never be the solution, but is always bound to make peace increasingly difficult to achieve.
(And yes, as reported by Times and other sources, both Israeli soldiers and Hamas fighters have been caught using human shields.)
A Finnish aid worker described on TV that not even construction materials can be brought into the largely destroyed Gaza, while there is very little farmable land and fishing can only be done in a very narrow coastal strip. People suffer from malnutrition, diseases and obvious psychological problems. In Gaza, the world is witnessing something only too familiar from history.
On the other hand, we know that tension and war have a great number of profiteers.
Ms. Jones| 6.4.10 @ 11:47AM
If you accept the premise that these were indeed "aid workers" and not activist/martyrs, you are naive. Since when do aid workers refuse a legitimate request to have their ships searched, write wills en masse days prior to the "operation", declare that they will break the blockade or become martyrs to the cause, then beat unarmed (unless you call paintball guns being "armed") men with metal pipes--even after he's down on the ground, or throw someone overboard causing grave injury? Imagine the "psychological problems" of Israelis who must conduct their daily business with hundreds of rockets being fired into their cities every year! If these were indeed simply aid workers, why did Egypt refuse them portage? And what do you know, our own American Terrorist William Ayres & Co. (radical and unrepentant Weatherman bomber of the Pentagon) is partially behind this so-called humanitarian effort. The Israelis have been set up by anti-Semites bent on their destruction. Unfortunately, your media is probably only showing you the Hamas version of video which conveniently omits the sight of these "peaceniks" brutally beating one man after he's down on the deck, and throwing another man overboard. Indeed, "those attacked have a right to defend themselves", which is exactly what the Israelis did--defend themselves.
Wandering Gentile| 6.4.10 @ 6:58AM
Mr. Hillyer, I do admire your steadfast faith in the survivability of the Jews. And you're probably right - there is indeed that Biblical promise that Jews will be around until the end of time.
But you may be threading on dangerous grounds by putting a theological spin on military events. Are any and all military actions by Israel justified by the fact that Jews have been attacked again and again for millenia? And should world leaders support Israel simply because its survivability is a "historical phenomenon"?
You also seem to be suffering from selective perception when you invoke history. Perhaps your piece would have been fairer had it mentioned the events spanning World War I to 1948 when Jews that had lived in Europe for centuries gradually and then forcibly cleansed Palestine of Arabs that had lived there for centuries. Tough luck for the Arabs - they weren't the Chosen People. And Europe (and eventually Americans) had to salve their collective conscience for all the brutality done to the poor Jews. No guilty thoughts for all those Arabs who anyway were illiterate nomads who do not really "own" the land.
Benny Zee | 6.4.10 @ 3:07PM
Wandering Gentile...Mr Hillyer (IMO) was only pointing out that Israel (Jews) have been targeted for centuries and it is true right up until today. I may remind you that since 1948 ..the UN mandate to create Two States (one Jewish and one Arab) and the Arabs choose war. Thats not Biblical or Theological! Hamas and Hezbullah fired thousand of rockets and missiles into Israel proper. Israel's tough responce is not "Theological!" What if Mexico shot rockets into Texas? I would also remind you (if are you are an American) that we in the USA are fighting the same enemy that Israel is in Iraq, Pakistan, and Afghanistan! And as for the tough luck arabs..more than million Arabs live as citizens in Israel..I don't see them running away to Cairo, Damascus, or that paradise in Gaza. As for "chosen " people..wandering..you be chosen" , I pass it along to you..but beware of all those religions that want to take it away from you. I was "chosen" by my wonderful Jewish mother to be Jewish..and I love it! Be well.

How can someone be so absolutely illiterate of history, unless you are willfully ignorant?

Mr Hillyer..excellant column. I don't know if you are Jewish, but you sure know Jewish history! The only way to describe the plight of us Jews is to understand our fantastic history, both religiously and realistically as a people who have witnessed it all since Abraham. Yes, we have survived 4000 yrs of Pogroms and must have many tricks in our "survival kits". Also, luck and the help of the "GOY Zaddick" (Righteous Gentile) has helped!! By the way I looked up "Ozymandias"..interesting..thank you. Sadly, Pharoah and Hitler's ghost still roams the globe. Great column. I hope what you say makes our USA Govt realize how important Israel is as our best Ally in that arena of the ME!
Quin| 6.4.10 @ 5:31PM
No, Hank, I am not Jewish; I am a cradle Episcopalian with strong traditionalist Catholic tendencies. But that doesn't keep me from recognizing merit and character in people of other faiths, and my admiration for people of your faith, collectively, is obviously almost unbounded. Thank you again for your nice comments. :)

Do not make the mistake of thinking Muslims will ever rest until Israel and all Jews are destroyed! Islam is a death cult, not a religion; Muslims worship a murderer named Mohammed, not God. As long as this cult exists it will be a threat to Western civilization itself. The West, indeed, the entire civilized world, must act now, before these insane cultists obtain nuclear weapons.
To protect civilization Israel must protect itself by destroying Iran's nuclear weapons program by any means possible, and without heed to any collateral damage Iran may suffer. The second thing that must be done is to isolate Muslims in their traditional home countries. If the world will isolate Muslims then terrorists attacks against the civilized people of the world will cease because Muslims will not have access to the countries they wish to harm.
Critics of what I just said will say that the Muslim world will cut off our oil if we act on my advice. Not true! There is no group of people on this earth more greedy than the Muslims. They will be more than happy to continue selling oil to the civilized world so they can continue to enjoy the fruits of civilization. Ironic, is it not? These barbarians want to enjoy the fruits of the very civilizations they wish to destroy.
Long live Israel! Long live Western civilization, the greatest civilization in the history of the human race!

Most of the people of the world now are pretty aware of the cruelty of the israelis ,so there will be different thought of the deep reality of the israelis, but unfortunately the governments of the whole world countries will not do more than temporary freezing of relations because sadly the US & many european countries will vito & support israel in the UN.

“The overwhelming majority of the American people would defend Israel, not attack it. Yes, we pray for a just, lasting solution in the region. But we could have had one many times over the past 100 years were it not for the intransigence of Israel's Arab neighbors. When the Ottoman empire was dismantled after WWI, and the colonial powers created a slew of new Arab states, including Arab "Jordan" out of most of mandate Palestine, it was hardly unreasonable to establish one small Jewish state as well in part of Palestine, the historic home of the Jewish people. When the UN further compromised -- splitting the remaining 1/3 of Palestine into yet another Arab state and a Jewish one, the Arab states refused and attacked Israel. Jordan seized the West Bank and Egypt seized Gaza. They could have created a new Arab Palestinian state in 1947, but refused. Instead, Jordan declared, and rightly so, that it WAS Arab Palestine, and annexed the West Bank. The Palestinian National Assembly ratified the decision. Only AFTER Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 war did the Arab nations suddenly discover a new nationality - Palestinian. Before then, they were just Arabs.
The Arab states (none of which really wants an independent new Palestine) have resisted every reasonable effort at compromise since. They have, as Winston Churchill famously said, "never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity." It is they who have ill-served the Arabs living in the West Bank and Gaza.”

Such talk! I am interested in the opinions of Grand Ayatollah Ali Al Sistani. He speaks about "people of the book" - Jews, Christians and Muslims. I have had a thought. Christians, take back this country. We are a bit crazy but non believers are so much worse. Then let us look for honest people of integrity among the other "people of the book". Look to see where God is working and join in. You might be surprised what will happen.

"The historical phenomenon of the Jews cannot be accounted for by historical or sociological theory. Accordingly, they may be said to be in some fashion or other a sign. Wouldn't you agree?"
Their current arrangement for survival is the neocon quest for American hegemony. In this quest, America needs to dominate the Middle East, home of oil resources that they believe are America's by some sort of divine right.
Without billions of dollars of American military and economic aid, plus the enormous influence of AIPAC over American politics, plus the automatic support by the American government for anything that Israel does, regardless of how heinous it may be, they would not last long. Maybe half an hour or so.
Oh, I forgot one. Anybody who criticizes Israel for any reason is automatically labeled as an anti-semite and anti-American.
Watch and see.
