What Lies Beneath

HHS buries report. Obama's mining activity. Dick Morris meddles. Paying Wall Street back. Labaton's post-NYT profits.

OFFICE POLITICS
The economic report released last week by Health and Human Services, which indicated that President Barack Obama's health care "reform" law would actually increase the cost of health care and impose higher costs on consumers, had been submitted to the office of HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius more than a week before the Congressional votes on the bill, according to career HHS sources, who added that Sebelius's staff refused to review the document before the vote was taken.

"The reason we were given was that they did not want to influence the vote," says an HHS source. "Which is actually the point of having a review like this, you would think."

The analysis, performed by Medicare's Office of the Actuary, which in the past has been identified as a "nonpolitical" office, set off alarm bells when submitted. "We know a copy was sent to the White House via their legislative affairs staff," says the HHS staffer, "and there were a number of meetings here almost right after the analysis was submitted to the secretary's office. Everyone went into lockdown, and people here were too scared to go public with the report."

In the end, the report was released several weeks after the vote -- the review by the secretary's office reportedly took less than three days -- and bore a note that the analysis was not the official position of the Obama administration.

OBAMA'S MINES
The irony of President Barack Obama visiting Beckley, West Virginia, Sunday to read a eulogy at the memorial service for those who died in the Upper Big Branch Mine accident, has not been lost on some White House aides. "If we had our way we'd be mourning the mining industry, not miners," says a White House aide. "As an environmental issue, we want the majority of these mining related industries just to go away."

In fact, the White House and some Obama Administration staffers at the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency have been coordinating with left-wing environmental groups to launch protests in West Virginia over such techniques as "mountaintop removal mining." This enabled the EPA to cite such protests as support for their new rulemaking. Earlier this month, the agency imposed rules sharply curtailing that form of strip mining in such states as West Virginia. The rules may end up costing several hundred West Virginians their jobs.

Now the Obama Administration is looking for ways to reward those groups they coordinated with. According to sources inside the EPA, the agency is attempting to find ways to get funding to several organizations it worked with on the mountaintop mining and other efforts, including Appalachian Voices and Coal River Mountain Watch. Meanwhile, the administration is attempting to identify ways to fund a much more influential "pass through" organization, the Appalachian Community Fund, an organization run out of Knoxville, Tennessee.

"Appalachian Community Fund is like the ACORN of West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee," says a Commerce Department political employee. "If we can get it just a few hundred thousand dollars, it can organize for us down there in ways to help us politically, and it's done great things for us with the EPA and other entities."

MEAN MORRIS
Some California conservatives were scratching their heads over an email being sent around by longtime Democrat and Clinton adviser Dick Morris, telling California Republicans not to support Senate candidate Tom Campbell, who has been leading a number of different polls, and who has declined to sign the Americans for Tax Reform pledge to not support tax increases.

"Guess Campbell didn't take any of Morris's advice or a phone call," joked one California political consultant. Morris has gained the reputation for using his emailed newsletter and Fox News appearances to criticize candidates he has attempted to rope into any number of entities he consults for, including the League of American Voters organization. In his email, Morris encouraged Republicans to support either Chuck Devore or Carly Fiorina. Of the latter two, Devore appears to be the one candidate showing momentum leading into June 8 primary.

PAYBACK BIG TIME
One of the reasons the Obama Administration has stepped up its public criticism of Wall Street isn't just its opposition to the regulatory reform legislation on Capitol Hill, say New York-based executives for such firms as Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, and Bank of America. It's because the firms have largely been pushing back against a number of requests from the White House in the past several months.

According to these executives White House political advisers, such as Valerie Jarrett and David Axelrod, have been calling senior management of those and other firms demanding that the banks step up hiring. "They don't think we're hiring enough of their people or people in general while we're making profits," says one executive with Bank of America. "And for several months now, they've been pushing us to do more to help them on the employment front."

Jarrett and Axelrod's requests have been met with little enthusiasm from B of A CEO Brian Moynihan, J.P. Morgan Chase CEO James Dimon, and Goldman Sachs Chairman Lloyd Blankfein, among others, say the executives, in part, because they don't feel stepping up hiring and recruitment is wise. Other executives say that even as he has led the Capitol Hill lobbying effort for Wall Street regulation, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, has also been making calls to firm executives encouraging them to help the administration on its job creation and stimulus efforts.

REVOLVING TIMES
One hire that Goldman has made was former New York Times reporter Stephen Labaton, who covered economic issues and sometimes conservative politics for the paper. Labaton, who is married to Miriam Sapiro, a bundler for Obama's presidential campaign and now a senior official in Obama's U.S. Trade Representative office, took a buyout from the Times late last year and immediately began offering his services to many of the companies he previously had reported on, offering to assist them in gaining access to his friends in the media. At least one company, according to Labaton friends at the Times, took him up on the offer, paying him more than $7,500 a month for his advice, believing that his wife's close ties from her fundraising days to such Obama Administration officials as FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski and Commodity Futures Trading Commissioner Chairman Gary Gensler, and special adviser on Afghanistan-Pakistan Richard Holbrooke, might help them. Now Labaton is a full-time consultant to the Wall Street firm on regulatory and legislative issues. Who says journalism isn't a profitable business any more?

By the way, it's spelled "brouhaha."

Frankly, I'm rather appalled by both of your attitudes, though I have to say I appreciate the "funny beer" joke. Call it a pun of opportunity.

But, "Amen," a lost finger is not an excuse for misspelling anything. If you'd bother to re-read what you post, you would have caught it. Heck, you misspelled your own username. And all-caps speech just makes you look like a crazed maniac and doesn't help at all with expressing sarcasm.

Actually, scratch that. I'm appalled by the attitudes of nearly every commenter on here. You think you're right? You want to prove the current regime wrong and have someone believe you? Then quit with the schoolyard fingerpointing and insulting those who share your viewpoint, and get your act together and go fact-gathering. If you sound intelligent and organized, people may very well believe you, but if you keep up the attitude, they're just going to dismiss you as radicals who hate your country because you're against what the government is doing and racist because you don't like the President.

Get over the attitude and make a point, or shut up, because you're just aggravating the bad image.

JP| 4.26.10 @ 7:28AM

The reasons why Wall St isn't hiring isn't too hard to discern. First, a large amount of the profits have come via the Fed -that is, 0% interest on money borrowed from the Fed is being invested into very short term Treasury Notes, and not into mo productive (but also risky) commerical lending and equities. Congress is about to enact a huge new regulatory infrastructure that makes such commercial investing more expensive. It's all about risk. Right now, all of the available credit is being soaked up by our own federal government.

I think also, the people who run Wall St realize that sometine sooner rather than later, Bernecke will have to raise interest rates. And when that happens, even the less risky Treasury Notes will have a lesser payback -as it will become more expensive to borrow.

More regulations, higher interest rates -what isn't there to like? BTW, the increased revenuse that firms such as Cisco, Oracle, Siemens, IBM, and Intel have reported this quarter are due mainly to overseas operations. It appears East Asia, Asia, and Oceania are doing quite well despite anemic growth in North America and Europe. Asia is replacing North America and Europe (at least for now) as the world's growth engine

Howard| 4.26.10 @ 8:11AM

Excellent points. Also, in this uncertain environment; why hire? Not only does Obama appear to want European spending and taxation; he may also desire European "lifetime employment" practices.

We all know Obama hates coal, but to deceive the miner's families, is about the lowest thing he has done.

Some of them actually said they felt he was going to work with them for coal. Whether people like it ornot, someof these miners really like their job!

I am alerting their newspapers & TV news, that they need to start investigative reporting....Obama is no friend to coal, they deserve to learn the truth!

RUDY| 5.1.10 @ 3:09AM

...Obammy is NO ONE'S FRIEND! Everyone should know the truth, but there are none so blind as those who will not see, to paraphrase... This includes plenty of people who are aware that he stinks and should NOT be acting president, NO MATTER where he comes from! He is destructive and dangerous, and we are not going to survive this by just walking around waving cute little flags. They are already telling ridiculous lies about the peaceful movements, and have riot police ready, and trying to make it as though there are vigilante mobs running rampant. The thing is, their lie is all that matters to them, and when shit head decides to go ahead and call out martial law on us, the same lies, just like in BIG BROTHER, will be published, but no one will be free to dispute them. WE ARE IN DANGER NOW!

Coal is the enery engine of the American economy and therefore much of the world's economy. What fool would want us to quit using cheap and plentiful coal?

Pete| 4.26.10 @ 12:26PM

The kind of fool who wants to take the profits from a productive, economically viable industry and redistribute them to his buddies in an economically unsound, unprofitable industry.

pugsley| 4.26.10 @ 1:26PM

The one thing that worries me the most is even if these numb sculls do redistribute the money onto their buddies unprofitable companies, then what? The original money being lifted can not be sustained so then what, does the whole house of cards collapse? Then what, is everyone out in the street looking for something to eat or does the shooting start at that point? The interlocking system which is America is being shaken to its very foundation, be advised something very dark is coming our way in the not too distant future.

Pete| 4.26.10 @ 1:51PM

The 'then what' is permanent subsidies paid for by you and me. Certainly these non-viable technologies would be deemed "too green to fail" in the effort to save us from Goracle prophecized sunburns.

Keith I| 4.26.10 @ 7:16PM

The "green companies" are like a plague of locusts. They strip a country bare of assets with the subsidies that are funded by the producing class, removing this capital from use by ecomomically viable industries. The viable industries starve and shed their workforce, further depleting the pool of available capitol but also cutting off the subsidies because the government revenues dry up. Once the subsidy goes away, the green locusts move on to the next producing crop and gorge themselves anew. After they have stripped the U.S. clean, I hope that they move to China. I feel confident that the Chicoms will have an appropriate response to them, hopefully beginning with an extended stay at the Re-education Camp of their choice.

Another unspoken scam of "President" Anti-Christ's, is the 3million he made in revenues from his books.

He's far from the first one to do this, but Union's and other sycophant organizations buy his book by the gross, and hand them out, or sell them cheap, to useful idiots.

It is another form of laundered campaign contributions. Jim Wright lost his job as House Speaker, for similar activities, and it has been going on for a long time.

But you can bet Maobama has perfected it, Chicago thug style.

The party of "Yes we can!" just keeps on trucking along. Everything for political expedience, even if they have to blow so much smoke up your behind you end up being admitted to ICU for colo-rectal cancer -- Just like this crowd caller at the county fair; "Hurray, hurray, hurray, step on up to be the first on your block to own a shiny new car that will solve your transportation needs for life! It has great mileage and is the greenest vehicle around! All you have to do is sign over your vote to me and the car will be yours!"

You sign, just to then find that the car for which you have just signed has a frame with square wheels, no engine, no windows, one seat, but it's nearly bare frame has two pedals connected to one axle and is painted chrome and has a Flex-Fuel sticker on its ergonomically unfriendly steering wheel.

The libs enjoy driving this new vehicle, just so they can gloat about their apparent success with the difficulty of getting it to move at all. Of course, when the machine finally falls apart because it's one of many that designed by lawyers, tested by blind men, was hand-machined by highly skilled druggies and alcoholics and overseen by porn-addicted bureaucrats they'll bitch and moan and say it was Bush's fault.

I want to know why Sebelius is not before a congressional committee right now expalining herself. In fact I think there should be a special prosecuter on this one. According to his own words on a recent talk radio show (Hannity or Medved), he saw the light during the Reagan presidency. I just did some quick research on Tom Campbell. In 2002 (yes, just months after 9/11) he wrote a letter in defense of a clearcut Jihadist and Israel- hater named Al-Arian. Two reasons not to support Campbell: 1) This history alone has caused much complaint (http://jif.me/politico), and 2) What basic lapse of judgment caused him not to perform so obvious a check into Al-Arian's ties?

Update 4/27/2010 1:09pm CT - According to Bret Baier, the DHS is denying this Prowler report, but actually they are admitting they did have the data needed to calculate the budget overruns, well before the House vote. They are merely saying they had not calculated them all until April 22nd. One would hope Mr. Baier and his colleagues are not accepting that fig leavery out of hand. Now, wouldn't that be a nice way to cover up? "Oops! These numbers aren't in line with what we've told America! I've got an idea! Let's stop calculating them until it's over!"

Does someone need to tell Bret Baier that computers and spreadsheets make calculations very fast, in this day and age? Get real and get a little investigative, Fox News. Or are you going to let others do all your work and accept everything you hear from the White House? Even if this excuse is true (and come on, now) how irresponsible would it be, for the DHS to have this data and not to calculate it before the House vote? Good grief, Mr. Baier.

How long does it take to calculate? They certainly seem to be able to draft thousands of pages of legislation in a hurry.

POWER CORRUPTS; ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY
- Lord Acton (1834–1902)
The RAT board --- this is an appropriate acronym. The Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board --- a provision included in the stimulus bill, has the job to oversee in-house watchdogs, known as inspectors general. The inspectors general job is to INDEPENDENTLY investigate allegations of wrongdoing at various federal agencies, without fear of interference by the White House or political appointees. It seems the White House wants control of inspectors generals --- the RAT board gives the people getting investigated the power to tell the investigators/inspectors generals what to investigate --- in the name of accountability and transparency. Once again our tax dollars hard at work –-- if it isn't evident by now what the stimulus was intended to stimulate --- looking into gov. corruption may bring some light to the question.(1)

Did anyone ever reeeeally think that health care reform would maintain or lower health care costs in this country? Did anyone ever really need to see a report to understand that medical costs to anyone caught paying the bill, would skyrocket. (illegal aliens and the perennial poor exempted) Who hasn't seen what similar health care opportunities have done to break the bank and backs of taxpayers in Massachusetts, besides the fact that the health care microcosm called 'Medicare' was aleady bankrupt long ago. Who needed a report? You'd have to have been in a coma or on the Koolaide for the last 10 years, to even imagine that health care reform was going to be either cost effective or care effective. The real shame though, is that our nations leader's willingly hid what they knew to be true, and denied the obvious to the useful idiots at the voting box. They must think we're really stupid, but then, that might not be an unfair assessment.. we voted them into office didn't we?
