Hillary Invades Canada

The Obama administration’s latest liberal charm offensive threatens to abort another special relationship with an international ally.

Canadians hosted hundreds of American air passengers whose planes were grounded on 9/11. They opened their hearts and their homes to us. During the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979-81, fearless Canadian diplomats in Tehran helped smuggle out of that maddened country endangered Americans.

None of that seemed to matter last week. Not content with putting an end to America’s historic “special relationship” with Britain, nor with bullying the U.S.’ only reliable ally in the Mideast, Israel, the Obama administration has launched an attack on our Northern neighbor, Canada. Their unguided missile landed squarely on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. It was Hillary.

Oh, my! Even the very liberal Toronto Globe and Mail felt the sting of Madam Secretary’s tongue-lashing. “It was the third time in a two-day visit to Canada that…Clinton gave Canadian hosts a headache,” writes Campbell Clark. Short work. But then, she was always capable of giving us three headaches in one day.

Clinton publicly rebuked the Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Harper wants to make maternal health the centerpiece of Canada’s initiative at the next G8 summit.

What could be wrong with that? Canada famously cares about her role in international humanitarian efforts. Canadians race to be first on the scene at international disasters like the recent Haitian earthquake or the Asian tsunami of 2004. Canadians can be justly proud of their record.

But Madam Secretary wasted no time in kicking the props out from under the Harper humanitarian initiative. “You cannot have maternal health without reproductive health,” she bluntly informed her Canadian hosts. “And reproductive health includes contraception and family planning and access to legal, safe abortion.”

Now, this is curious. When she was First Lady (ah, those were the days), Hillary Clinton said abortion is “wrong” (Newsweek, October 31, 1994). Now that she is Secretary of State in the most avidly pro-abortion administration in U.S. history, she not only thinks America must have abortion-on-demand, paid for by U.S. taxpayers, but she also thinks the Canadians should be scolded in their own capital city if they fail to promote abortion throughout the world.

This is also interesting, isn’t it, as a reflection on the just-passed ObamaCare bill? A number of formerly pro-life Democrats fell for the offer of an Executive Order on taxpayer funding of abortion. President Obama was the most pro-abortion state senator in history, the most pro-abortion U.S. Senator in history.

Still, these credulous Members of Congress somehow thought he would give them a fig leaf so they could vote for his signature piece of legislation. Did they know that this administration believes “you cannot have maternal health… without abortion”? Were they prepared to deny coverage for maternal health? Of course not.

So, in her most undiplomatic diplomatic visit, Hillary Clinton gave the lie to the notion that ObamaCare does not include taxpayer funding for abortion. Not here. Not in Canada, not anywhere in the world.

“Abortion is central to everything in life and how we want to live it,” said the late liberal leader Lawrence Lader. Lader, along with Dr. Bernard Nathanson, founded NARAL, the abortion advocacy group. Nathanson famously repented, filmed “The Silent Scream,” and has become a devout pro-life Catholic. Lader never yielded an inch.

It used to be the case that major Democratic candidates were expected to visit Israel, Italy, and Ireland. The Three I’s, it was called. That was to undergird their appeal to large minorities in the U.S. — Jews, Italians, and Irish.

But now, liberals must go hat in hand to NARAL and Planned Parenthood. And if that causes trouble with our traditional allies on the international scene — allies as staunch and courageous as Canada — so be it. To be true to her mission to the North, Madam Secretary’s limo should have borne the flag she is actually serving — the Jolly Roger.

Yet another shining example of what Rodham termed "...smart power...smart diplomacy..." at her Senate confirmation to be SoS last year...well,having watched her in action for a year now, give me stupid diplomacy any time.

Alan Brooks| 4.6.10 @ 6:31PM

You might point all this out to the GOP so they wont be as complacent next time around in running presidential candidates who are merely wounded or tortured war heroes, or who were only elected because Reagan was their boss or their father's boss.

You MIGHT want to keep that in mind, because if you don't want to do all you can to run better candidates then you will continue to get what you deserve. In this world you rarely get rewarded for botching things up.

SoCon| 4.7.10 @ 1:28AM

Well, if that's the case, bonehead--you'd better not reward Obummer and vote for him again. He's already botched things up a lot.

Deborah D | 4.6.10 @ 7:00AM

Democrats aren't content to punch only Americans in the face with their arrogance and dangerous and silly ideas -- now they spread their stupidity throughout the world.

The next president will have to also make an apology tour -- apologizing for the Obama administration.

Alan Brooks| 4.6.10 @ 10:38PM

Yes, Deborah,
Obama has to apologize for Bush's mistakes.
To err is human, to apologize is imperative.

Dawn| 4.7.10 @ 8:15PM

There are many Americans that are pro-life and believe it is an inalienable right to be born. Many believe that human beings are unique and valuable. Abortion has its roots with Margaret Sanger. She promoted family planning and infringed on the rights of many when African Americans, and those with retardation were sterilized in the early 1900's. A company called Epicyte produced GMO corn that sterilized men who ate it, in 2001. A tetanus shot distributed by WHO, and funded by our country, contained a sterilization drug, and was given to thousands of women in Africa without them knowing it, very recently. How far the world has fallen! When people determine life is of no value, chaos and destruction will follow. I hope Canada retains its right to value and promote life, rather than take it.

k962| 4.6.10 @ 7:27AM

Hillary as a big admirer of Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, this should be no surprise. Eugenics lives within the Obama administration.

Vince| 4.6.10 @ 2:06PM

"DO NOT KILL. DO NOT TAKE LIFE, BUT PREVENT. Safe, harmless information can be obtained of trained Nurses"
This is a portion of Margaret Sanger's first handbill for birth control. Margaret Sanger knew abortion is murder.

Julie| 4.6.10 @ 4:15PM

Sanger knew abortion was murder, but promoted it anyway.

Melvin| 4.6.10 @ 7:29AM

This nothing more than Obama's hand in marginalizing us with our allies.
What Obama is effectively doing with his mouthpiece Mrs. Clinton is backing this Country into a box with no windows and doors.
By doing so this is neutering us to where no one will trust us, no will give us credit, and absolutely no one will listen to us on a world stage.
This is what the 60s hippies/anti-war left has wanted since the Vietnam War. This must be Senator John Kerry's finest hour because it sure as hell isn't this Country's.
Now boy genius has narrowed the use of nuclear weapons to the point that we are a smoking ruin, and no way to respond.

The Bishop| 4.6.10 @ 8:45AM

Not advocating for the evil that is abortion, but what if Mrs. Rodham some 65 years ago had opted for access to safe, legal abortion? What a shame that only the afterbirth survived.

Jim O'Brien| 4.6.10 @ 9:52AM

It appears that Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, and Congressional Democrats collectively, are trying to do as much damage as possible to the United States while they are in office.

Baal is setting our foreign policy.

crookedwren| 4.6.10 @ 12:10PM

danfromatlanta| 4.6.10 @ 1:34PM

Quite so! It is interesting to note the name "Beelzebub" an alternative monicker for Satan has as it's root, Baal! Now connect the dots! Baal is setting our foreign policy, and that would be understood to mean Barak and Hillary. It's not that the current administration is stupid, they are evil!

Margaret| 4.6.10 @ 10:14AM

Yet another monotonously partisan article from the right-wing press. Hillary didn't make that big of a bombshell in Canada, you know. All she did was get us talking, and there's no harm in that. She definitely has NOT damaged the US/Canadian relationship - get a grip, please!!!

It's going to take a lot more than some blunt talk from H. Clinton to damage our relationship. Hillary is generally being praised here for being blunt, honest, and at least for having some principles, which is more than we can say for most of the Canadian politicians in Parliament. I, for one, found her to be quite refreshing - I wish we had a few like her in Ottawa.

KyMouse| 4.6.10 @ 11:11AM

Margaret, Hillary would be "honest" if she pointed out that abortion is the deliberate killing of innocent, helpless babies. Her "principles" are no better than those of Margaret Sanger.

I hope you're grateful that your mother let you live. More than 52 million babies in our country have been denied that chance since 1973.

Take Hillary Clinton, Margaret. Please.

Donald| 4.6.10 @ 9:25PM

Considering the strong likelihood that a large majority of these 52 million babies would have grown up adopting the politics of their parents and thus been political leftists, abortion does have a bright side, doesn't it.

NO LIBS| 4.8.10 @ 4:55PM

No, it doesn't.

JP| 4.6.10 @ 11:57AM

"Hillary is generally being praised here for being blunt, honest, and at least for having some principles, which is more than we can say for most of the Canadian politicians in Parliament. I, for one, found her to be quite refreshing - I wish we had a few like her in Ottawa."

It is refreshing to hear that the Candadians have overcome thier fear of being dominated by the Ugly Americans. It is also great to see the Candadians know thier pecking order in the big scheme of things. It's about time our friends from the North now understand that they are nothing more than the 51st state and deserve no more repsect from the President or Secretary of State than the mayor of Racine Wisconsin. Can't wait until Obama sets up an office of offical liason with the PM and his Parliment. Orders will much easier to issue that way.

crookedwren| 4.6.10 @ 12:17PM

Some principles. Hm.

Margaret Sanger led us into Planned Parenthood as a method to rid the world of who she considered were "undesireables."

And Tea Partiers are labeled as racists.

And the world has turned upside down, indeed, when "having principles" is equated with touting the virtues of mothers actually seeking to murder their own, those who are least able to defend themselves.

Converse, by all means, Margaret and Canada. Oh, Canada, PLEASE take Hillary as well.

Any interest in Obama up there in Ottawa?

Kenneth E. MacAlister Jr.| 4.6.10 @ 1:43PM

Margaret, you wish you had more politicians in Ottawa like her? Don't just take her, take the whole damn lot of them! As for abortion & those who profit from it, Almighty GOD, who created us all will ensure there is justice for the millions of His children snuffed out selfishly & unrepentantly in the name of progressivism, convenience, arrogance, ignoranace, & just plain evil! Anyone who believes Almighty GOD will not hold anyone accountable for the evil known as abortion on demand are deluding themselves. Take 'em all Margaret, they're all yours, free of charge!

Forever Marine| 4.6.10 @ 2:41PM

Margaret, take Hillary, please!!!!!!!

Pete | 5.24.10 @ 4:23PM

Well Margaret, maybe we can send you some of ours. Oh, but no refunds or exchanges after the fact. All sales final!

Howard| 4.6.10 @ 10:23AM

Hillary being the solid, stolid, soldier is going along with Obama on this one. I still think that Obama fears she will make a primary challenge to him in2012, especially if the economy is still sour. By adopting a hard left abortion position, it reduces her pull with the few remaining pro-choice Democrats. The Joe Stupak (Stupid) voters will not see a dimes difference between Hillary and BHO. She made her move against BHO in the old line Democrat states like Ohio and PA. These have been hit very hard by the down turn. Those would be her allies in a primary against BHO. Perhaps wishful thinking.

Howard| 4.6.10 @ 12:00PM

By adopting a hard left abortion position, it reduces her pull with the few remaining pro-choice Democrats. My error, I meant pro-life Dems.

Kenneth E. MacAlister Jr.| 4.6.10 @ 1:47PM

Howard, you committed no error. There are no pro-life Democrats.

JP| 4.6.10 @ 2:35PM

You could have a point. It all makes for fascinating theatre . Hillary could make these kind of scenes a weekly event, and The Anointed One couldn't very easily rebuke in public, could he? Best not upset the Hard Left. I mean Hillary's words are music to thier ears. And Hillary could continue this spectacle indefinitely. She'd just have to pick and chose her victims with some care. Best to bully the Candadians and the like. She could go to tiny Lichtenstein next, and announce that they do not have enough gay rights and free false teeth for retired lesbian plumbers! That would surely rebuild her rep the folks in Marin County.

And after the Mid terms, when it finally dawns on Obama that he has some very serious political problems, Hillary can announce her retirement in order to spend more time with her family (yeah, right. I'm sure Slick Willie will make himself unavailable). And when Obama's approval ratings go below 40, Hillary makes the announcement!

Howard| 4.6.10 @ 5:01PM

My take is that I see Obama moving Hillary more to the left than her natural (political) inclination. I think that in spite of her inherent leftism, she absorbed Bill's triangulation concept. If she is forced to mirror Obama completely, then she has no difference (except for race & gender). And the Democrats indicated last time that they prefer a cool black guy to a pant suited older woman. So, I think Obama ( or more likely his handlers) are marginalizing Hillary for a primary run.

ZerObama| 4.7.10 @ 4:32PM

Nah, Hitlery is a leftist true believer just like Obama.

Joe| 4.6.10 @ 10:26AM

These incompetents are ruining our credibility, destroying the economy, making us less safe, alienating any allies we might have and just in general, being destructive. What else can they think of, I wonder. And the liberals who put them in office still think they are great!

NC defector| 4.6.10 @ 11:21AM

She apparently too gave Bill a headache every night, save one.

Petronius| 4.6.10 @ 11:21AM

So the liberals are admitting the only thing they value is fornication without the consequences having to stay home with the kids. On second thought, considering how their kids would turn out, abortion for liberals ought to be mandatory.

Northern Rebel| 4.6.10 @ 11:34AM

Have no fear, Hillary will be resigning soon, so as to distance herself, in preperation for another run at the brass ring!

In Comrade Hillary's demented view, abortion is a sacred right, without which women can never be equal to men.

The dishonesty, not to mention the evil, of such a position is shown by how Hillary and the other femi-Nazis cannot effectively respond to the sex-selection abortion phenomena that dominates much of the world (China, India, etc).

That is, the culture in these Third World societies use abortion, coupled with modern technology, to target female babies for elimination.

The dilemma for Comrade Hillary is that she can't criticize these gender-targeted abortions least she crosses the dictates of multiculturalism.

See how one can get tied up in knots when starting with an evil premise like equating abortion with a human right insttead of calling it for what it is -- killing of the innocent.

Is there any country, group, person, etc that this administration HAS NOT insulted in the last year? The only hope is that Americans are mentally able to read-between-the-newspaper-lines and to correct their 11/4/08 mistake in November 2010!!!!

Christopher Holland| 4.6.10 @ 9:49PM

Obama hasn't insulted Iran, Syria, North Korea and the Palestinian thugocracy. He only insults allies - enemies have nothing to fear. He just invited them to attack America with chemical and biological weapons, for crying out loud. When it comes to appeasement, Obama and Clinton make Neville Chamberlain look like Attila the Hun.

MPDMAN| 4.6.10 @ 4:05PM

As a Canadian, Hillary's visit barely made a ripple up here. But I do love how the right wing press is trying to make an issue of this - we don't give a crap about Clinton's admonitions to us, why do you?!?

I love the American spectator... You simply have no idea what you are talking about. Did you even bother reading, Canadian newspapers. Apart from that one little quote you pulled from the globe, I say you wrote this right before class meaning you did not research it properly. First of all, Clinton criticized Canada on its maternal policy because the Harper government has NOT given any details on it, and the G8 meeting is around the corner.
The real issue was about the Arctic and Clinton scolding Canada for not inviting other countries such as Sweden, Iceland and Canada's aboriginal people to the conference. Jeez, read the papers. This article totally missed the point on Clinton's visit to Canada. And we as Canadians do not mind promoting abortion to the world, we believe that women have the right to choose. Who are we to tell women what they can and cannot do with their body.
Anyways, this is terrible reporting from the American spectator. This is actually awful. If you actually bothered to read the news in Canada, this whole abortion thing was a non issue compared to the other topics that were discussed. This article was totally amateur.

ZerObama| 4.7.10 @ 1:30AM

That you, Hitlery?

Lynda| 4.7.10 @ 12:17PM

Given that the rags that are produced in Canada passing as newspapers, it would be a good thing if everyone in the U.S. ignored them. They are socialists in the extreme. The conservative view is that Mrs. Clinton should keep her mouth shut as she did not raise these concerns with the Canadian government--only with the liberal and socialists' newspapers.

Max Frederick| 4.7.10 @ 12:36PM

Yves...written like a true Canadian Liberal. The Spectator's piece is bang on. The Canadian secular feminist media made much about Clinton's abortion question, inflating it's prominence with the other two non issues. And yes, Yves you got caught with your Liberal flytrap open. Canada pushes the Planned Parenthood agenda in promoting abortion, something Mr. Social Peace (Chretien) did for years, while IGNORING native issues going back as far as when he was Indian Affairs Minister. In fact Yves, Mr. Martin when he was stumping for re-election, dispatched the Disaster Assistance Response Team to Northern Ont. after a mismanaged water maintenance issue on a native reserve. This issue had occurred on a LIBERAL watch. Maybe the American Spectator should look at how the opposition Liberal party engineered a Child and Maternal Health Motion in Parliament, designed to act as a political wedgie and couldn't muster enough votes after an all day debate to carry the day. Go home Yves!

Shyster| 4.7.10 @ 4:57AM

Obviously, the state of public education in Canada has fallen to the levels of those in the States when you have uninformed and illiterate individuals like Yves making nonsensical statements. The point of the article, dunderhead, is that Hillary is once again alienating our allies. It wasn't about abortion chowderhead!

The American Spectator ACCURATELY reported that Hillary chided Canada for not bending to America's wishes. Actually, I should say to the radical demands of the Obama administration. The article was about yet another attempt by Obama to force his will on a government friendly to America.

Instead of chastising the American Spectator, you really should be learning to read critically, since your reading comprehension is obviously quite poor, to say the least. And honestly, no one cares that you're in favor of killing innocents and calling it a woman's "right to choose". Time to sue your school masters who obviously failed miserably in your case.

Just curious: What did the Spectator say when Bush policy increased abortions by several million every year?...

Obama's restoring of funds for pregnancy prevention measures in the world's poorest countries is a breath of fresh air...thus reducing abortions by 10's of millions in the next 8 years. Republicans have falsely claiming that we fund abortions overseas, etc. It's been illegal for US $'s to fund abortions overseas since 1973, but we DO fund pregnancy prevention measures, emergency field birth kits, etc.

http://www.religioustolerance.org/abo_wrld.htm

1993: Repeal of the funding ban: President Clinton felt that private, foreign organizations should be able to receive USAID funding for that part of their programs that involved pregnancy prevention, even though they used their funds raised elsewhere to finance abortions or to appeal for abortion reform. On 1993-JAN-22, his second day in office, he rescinded the executive order.

2001: Reinstatement of the funding ban: On 2001-JAN-22, during his first day in office, President George W. Bush reinstated the funding ban for family planning programs run by agencies that also provide abortion services out of their own funds. His rationale was somewhat confusing. He wrote to the U.S. Agency for International Development: "It is my conviction that taxpayer funds should not be used to pay for abortions or advocate or actively promote abortion, either here or abroad." But no such funds have ever been granted. Existing legislation prevents foreign grants from being used to fund abortions or provide abortion counseling.

http://www.commondreams.org/views01/0126-05.htm

January 26, 2001: Family planning research groups, such as the Alan Guttmacher Institute, last year said that if US funding levels were restored to the $540 million (from $425 million), the following would happen: Nearly 12 million more couples in developing countries would gain access to modern methods of contraception.

There would be 4.3 million fewer unintended pregnancies, 1.5 million fewer unintended births, 500,000 fewer miscarriages; 2.2 million fewer abortions each year; 8,000 fewer deaths from unsafe abortions, 7,000 fewer deaths from other causes related to pregnancy and 92,000 fewer deaths of infants.

BU$H cut funding on 1-22-2001, then cut it some more in 2002, so it was roughly 1/2 or just over $200 million. However, some of it was restored because of his 2003 Africa/Aids program, which he didn't fully fund either. Bush cut aids funding completely in early 2001, and dropped another program in Congress (around $800K more) too. I found this was typical for Bush: cut a program & let it slide for a couple years, then start it up again acting as if it was his idea, then not fully fund it as promised, or not at all

...I bet not a peep.

ZerObama| 4.8.10 @ 3:15PM

GW's Africa AIDS program is widely hailed as the most successful AIDS policy in history because it provided countless AIDS infected Aficans with state of the art medications. Millions of Africans are alive today because of the generosity of George W. Bush and the American people.
