A Further Perspective

Fear Itself

Democrat skunks are getting nervous and raising a stink.

So, mean right-winger Tea Partiers are hurting the feelings of our sainted elected officials in Washington. There are rumors of intimidation, death threats and, horror of horrors, inappropriate language. So thin-skinned are these folks that Sarah Palin’s simple exhortation, “don’t retreat, reload,” was referred to as “violent words and imagery.” Even dead Republicans are the subject of posthumous excoriation, as in these noble words of Barry Goldwater: “Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice.” One wonders what they would make of Thomas Jefferson’s observation that, “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

You’d think that the acquisition of power would have softened their own partisan attacks and made them magnanimous along the lines of George W. Bush, who said of President Barack Obama, “He deserves my silence.” Of course, no such silence was accorded the gracious Bush by his predecessor, his successor or other leftists and their media mouthpieces who spent years unleashing unending abuse on him; from being hung in effigy to books and plays envisioning his assassination.

So it’s odd to hear this kind of yelping from those on the left; those whose idols have ever advocated the violent overthrow of our capitalistic system. It is puzzling that now that one of their very own radicals is in power, they seem unwilling to celebrate their cherished heritage of “peaceful” protesting; from Bill Ayers and his pals at the SDS, whose violent hatred of America turned explosive, to the others of their ilk who burned their draft cards, bras and anything else they couldn’t smoke.

No, it seems that all they want to remember now are the awful affronts suffered at the hands of hateful right-wingers. Of course one needn’t undergo a 1960s flashback to recall the thuggery that saw Black Panthers menacing voters at polling places in 2008 and union heavies using intimidation to suppress opposition to Obamacare at town hall meetings. Yet, liberals continue to cry foul over the furor they themselves brought on by using skullduggery to pass an unpopular piece of legislation.

The real reason for all the hue and cry should be patently clear to anyone who has followed the doings of the Democratic Party for the last few decades. Yes, there is fear in the air, but it’s not trepidation over bodily harm or any profanation of their virgin ears. Their fear is of America itself, the America they don’t understand and clearly regard as the enemy.

And so they will fight back with the dependable tools of their arsenal. Along with their perplexingly successful practice of demonizing various and sundry American industries in service of class warfare, they are also fond of sowing the seeds of hate and dissension, be it racial or otherwise. And this is more than ironic, since the target of their attacks are usually practicing Christians, whose greatest commandment is to love, yet who are so often accused of all manners of hate. If you are colorblind or not properly race-conscious, you are a white supremacist; if you follow the tenets of your faith, you are a narrow-minded homophobe; and if you are someone who has actually joined the military to defend this country, you might end up on the DOJ’s terrorist watch list.

The truth is, Democrats have plenty of reasons to fear this coming fall. Scott Brown’s election was no fluke; the taking of Ted Kennedy’s seat by a Republican — albeit a moderate one — was a deliberate message that people are growing fearful of ever-encroaching government control of their lives.

So, in a way Democrats are right to fear the Tea Party movement. Just as a skunk releases its foul odor when it senses an enemy, so too those who despise our way of government can instinctively smell the tar and feathers that await them; the same treatment their forefathers received at the hands of the original Tea Partiers. But this time, the only act of violence needed to be committed against them will take place in voting booths across the nation on November 2.

Our Constitution was our reef. The Demonrats blew that all to hell a couple Sundays ago. I can hear some really big waves coming...

I am not so pessimistic. Yes, the radicals in the White House are communists who seek the eventual overthrow of our Constitutional way of life, but @ the end of the day there are far more of us than they. As for me November can't get here soon enough. Have faith! The Founders got our back if we are willing to step up.

Since we're talking fixes here, assuming a Con- Con, it being the only possibility of making such changes as the congress will not offer any amendments to the states that would lessen their power, how about some of the following;

1) Repeal the 17th, so that the states and not money will have a greater say in what senators do.

2) Reframe the 16th, so that it is clear that wages, salaries and the such are not income, as was understood at the time of the possible ratifying of the 16th. Also, set the taxable amount high enough, and with a fixed standard so that the middle class are not preyed upon.

3) TERM LIMITS, definitely TERM LIMITS. No more than 2 for the senate and non-consecutive. No more than 6 for the congress and no more than 3 consecutive.

4) Rewrite the taxing clause, so that it is clear that general welfare and common defense were limiting the purpose of such taxes.

5) Clearly define the commerce powers as that of trade and navigation and only in application to state governments, not the people.

6) Any controversial legislation on appeal of 1/2 of governors, must be approved by 2/3 of governors.

7) Sovereignty clause for the states, that they are free, independent and sovereign, and as such reserve the right upon a convention of the people to reclaim any authority delegated to the union.

8) Repeal the 14th, which was never constitutionally ratified anyway, that states may be the ones who determine their internal laws. Internal laws would be those confined to the states borders and as such not subject to other states interference.

9) All laws proposed must cite the power under which it is to be enacted, and in pursuit of.

10) All laws proposed must relate to one subject and cite power in pursuit of.

11) All states participating in the Union shall not infringe on the peoples (this means the entirety of the individuals, not corporately) right to bear arms.

12) That education of a right is to be determined by the states within their own borders, and that the federal government may not impose standards, nor provide grants.

I don't know about elections, but I will say that as judicial review has been distorted into making SCOTUS the final say some language clearer than "misbehavior" would be good. I also think that 1 and 6 of my suggestions above would take away power from the judiciary branch to legislate.

You missed one huge ammendment. Only taxpayers should have the priveledge of voting. If freeloaders continue as a voting block, then politicians will continue courting their votes, always promising to transfer wealth from producers to the freeloaders.

A good list, but too much. A much simpler approach:
Repeal the 17th amendment and give the state governments their representation back.

Repeal the 16th and institute the Fair Tax.

Enforce the 10th amendment and put the Feds back into its Constitutional restraints.

Force the Federal Government to divest itself of all landholding in the States. The Feds should own no land outside of Washington D.C. This includes the National Parks, let the states run them.

Now who has the balls to do these things?

Maybe as condition of becoming a president, member of congress, or a justice of the supreme court, potential candidates should be able to demonstrate a complete understanding of the Constitution as envisioned by the Founding Fathers by way of a comprehensive written test. Anyone who can't pass that test is eliminated from the ballot.

We will do the only thing that we can do and that is to educate those who are educable and rally the troops for the November elections. There are no conservative Democrats left and a third party will cede the election to the Democrats. We must demand that the Republicans adhere to conservative principals and we must stick by them when they do or vote them out if they don't. We don't need to amend the constitution but we must elect people who will abide by it. If it comes to taking the country back any other way, then all is lost.

Just use our dollars. A smart, targeted economic boycott is all it would take. Yup, some of us would lose jobs and profitable investment returns for a few years-but compared to what the people who built this country, small potatoes. Start with the media conglomerates, and don't go to their movies, cancel or scale back cable, don't buy their music, let their magazines and news papers sit on the stands.But, we won't even give up our Seinfeld reruns for America. We won't even skip a super bowl or the world series.C'MON just do it!

These criminals are unlikely to fairly and peacefully yield what they believe is rightfully theirs as superior intellectual beings. Those who ignore the will of the people (their subjects) routinely won't allow the same people who don't know what's good for them to make a 'mistake' at the ballot box. ACORN (whatever they choose to call themselves by then) will be working overtime, and the usual band of thugs will be out on election day. Travel in packs and take cameras, lots of cameras.

Acorn is a danger, true. But remember the Brown election. They had prepared bogus fraud claims and abandoned them only because the vote wasn't close. They have not yet figured out how to erase 100,000 votes, but they're working on it. That's why we need an absolute tsunami in November. If we have five or six MN elections, we will get five or six more Al Frankens.

Yes, take cameras and video. Make sure you vote. Document everything. THAT is our only hope. Clearly Americans have had enough. The MSM will do everything to convince us otherwise.

Freeman, this whole situation reminds me of Ukraine in two ways: Government corruption in stealing votes AND a split demographic (ethnic Russian/Ukrainian in Ukraine) that leads to continual, sometimes violent, conflict rather than constructive dialogue.

The left talks the talk about "bipartisanship" and moving forward but what they mean, of course, is what's yours is mine and what's mine is mine. It's a philosophy of grabbing ALL power so there is ultimately no "bipartisanship". The health care debate and energy policy is a perfect example of how the left will hold these issues hostage and even happily make them worse (watch the price of gasoline soar, see people suffer from health care costs) to grab more power and THEN even happily see them get worse to get MORE power.

What they fear, of course, is that this agenda is laid bare without them blaming their opponents. Obama got his way, he OWNS his health care bill (no blaming GW). They are terrified of the electoral anger this will generate over the next 2.5 years.

Leftists have always been about milking the virtues of certain causes while at the same time undermining them. (This both helps them to pre-emptively attack their opponents of not "caring" about the issue while they derive more and more power from the crisis. (You don't retain power by solving problems that got you in there in the first place.)) George Washington stepping down from government after the end of the revolutionary war is inconeivable to them. Power is the WHOLE POINT of the socialist revolution. Most I know even admit this.

Ironically, perhaps the greatest fear among socialists is that they will get their way and be exposed. Socialism is a religion and most practioners of religion don't want to be "fundamentalists". It's a perjorative term to the left. Leftism is about having fun and being superior but without any actual sacrifice. It's about being a limosine liberal and preaching diversity and living in the suburbs with Reverend Wright. It's about cars and fossil fuels being bad and then still running a half dozen A/C's off of a coal powered electrical grid. They want to be devout leftists like Ted Kennedy was a Catholic.

Their fear, terror actually, is that they may wind up actually making not a western European socialist utopia, but an Argentinian and Mexican socialist republic. Even most elite liberals would wind up firmly being peasants in such a regime.

Why, to convince them that fighting for liberty against tyrany makes you a militia-nut-job, of course. The take-down of a militia group back east was excellently timed, don't ya think? They want to preempt anyone from instilling that very "fear" by intimidating men and women willing to fight for that very liberty.

I know it sounds like giving too much credit to what appears to be an unreasonable mob of liberals but these wack-jobs spend hours and hours filled with hate thinking of ways to tear our freedom down and play robin hood. This stuff is planned out.

How about Bill Rice of California? He had his finger bitten off by a leftst a few months ago. Mr. Rice was on Fox News yesterday. Some of you may be more familiar with the incident so jump in if you wish.

His son was being inducted into the Marine Corp and as he was driving home from the ceremony he stopped at a Tea Party gathering in his neighborhood to see what was going on. A group of "communists" were across the street heckling the Tea Party members, and one of them walked across a four lane street to confront Mr. Rice.

As Mr. Rice explained, "I got out of the car when confronted, and somehow my fist ended up in the guy's mouth, then he bit down on my finger." How the fist got placed there was not explained.

I personally hope the unidentified biter needed his teeth replaced. The biter immediately disappeared according to Mr. Rice. Guess he didn't want to take the heat. Mr. Rice, although of an older age group, appeared to be a man who could hold his own although he lost the little finger on his right hand. The statist newsmedia did not report this incident although it was on the Drudge Report. Kudos to Mr. Rice. He didn't go running to the media like the "communists", he took care of business.

Another thought:

My cousin's hunting dog actually died from a skunk's "stink". A skunk's release is in a fairly dense stream/vapor up close, and extremely toxic.

My understanding is that the dog's respiratory system was crashed, perhaps like a catastrophic ashma attack or something.

I bring that story up to remind you columnists, and even we commenters here that we have gotten very close to the "skunks"....................

I concur. A Constitutional Convention could open Pandora's Box. The constitution that we already have can hardly be approved upon. Unfortunately, nearly a century of "progressive" assaults on it have brought us to where we are. We need to restore constitutional principals to our governance. The only way to do that is to win elections. If we keep electing leftists and fools (I realize that there is a large overlap between the two groups) then the Constitution will soon be a historical artifact. This path won't be easy and it will take decades, but it is the only path we have.

This article has too many stock generalizations. It offers a weak argument.

Talking about "Democrats" as though they are a monolithic entity makes no more sense than talking about "Republicans" or "Americans" as monolithic entities.

If anything, the last few weeks have demonstrated Obama's cool is more than an act. The man is genuinely temperate, sober, and even-keeled.

This may be a fault, but it seems indisputable, and you'll never see him blubbering on television like Glenn Beck.

Democrats in general seem far less uneasy than they were two months ago, and I doubt they are the trembling hoard of poltroons that exist in the fantasies of some of you on the right.

The people who are loud, hysterical, rash, hate-filled, and indecorous are manifestly anxious about something that goes beyond a modest health insurance reform bill -- and they sure as hell weren't worried about government spending when W was adding hundreds of billions to the debt.

There seems to be fewer and fewer surmises about the cause of this anxiety available to the careful thinker other than the one that is most obvious.

I think we need to be cautious of the chief skunk - George Soros and his plan to put in place Secretaries of State that will help sway the 2012 elections for his candidates.

To LiberalReader I would say that I am sorry that during his presidency I did not realize the debt GW was heaping on America. However, I feel that while I disagree with that approach, I do not feel that he was out to destroy the values and foundations of America as I believe Soros and Obama are seeking to do.

I will be at this year's local Tax Day Tea Party to fight against the attacks against the very values of America as well as the outrageous deficit.

But then again, anyone wicked enough to set out to do such a thing and clever enough to get himself president would probably ALSO be clever enough to hide the evidence, right?

Thus absence of evidence itself becomes evidence. Indeed, the more sane and decent Obama SEEMS, the more wicked and devious we know him to be.

Again, if you come up with any evidence about Obama's true, secret evil dark intentions somehow, I'd be delighted to consider it. Until then, why not stick to what you can actually substantiate?

Believe it or not, there have been many years in which deficits were much larger as a percentage of GDP than they are now -- decades actually.

We've just gone through a terrible recession, which is the major cause of the deficits. That recession began in December of 2007, which, you'll recall, was before Obama took office. I'm not exactly sure what Obama was doing back then to forward his devious scheme to destroy America -- but maybe you ought to consider the possibility that rather than being a Lex Luther you must hate, he's just a political opponent with whom you disagree. And once you make that step towards intellectual maturity and good citizenship, modulate your political rhetoric accordingly. You'll be happier if you do.

Obama is doing exactly what he said he would do when he promised to "fundamentally transform the United States of America". Trouble is, most Americans don't want the country fundamentally transformed. We do have problems and those problems pre-date Obama’s election, but his solutions will exacerbate them and accelerate their destructive effects – not cure them. He inherited a recession caused by inadequate government regulation of GSE’s created by the government. In my opinion, Barney Frank and Chris Dodd bear more responsibility than anyone else. However, underlying that immediate problem is a much larger structural deficiency that is capable of destroying our entire economic and political system. If we don’t address entitlements, specifically Medicare and Social Security, they will consume us – and soon.
