Apparently the Lord wants anyone to be able to walk across the U.S. border unimpeded.
Overshadowed by the Obamacare vote, tens of thousands marched on the National Mall on Sunday March 21 for "Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR)," including numerous religious groups. Called the "March for America," sponsors included immigrants groups and labor unions, as well as ACORN, CodePink, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the National Council of Churches, and the National Association of Evangelicals.
Essentially the marchers want a rehash of the failed 2007 legislation creating a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, which critics call "amnesty," as well as increased visa quotas, a guest worker program, and enhanced family reunification. New York Senator Chuck Schumer is pushing a Senate version, while Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois is pushing the U.S. House version.
Oldline Protestant liberals naturally were prominent in the march, and the United Methodist Building on Capitol Hill served as a staging area for demonstrators. "We saw the integrity of law enforced, but the integrity of individuals and persons forgotten," exclaimed Phoenix-area United Methodist Bishop Minerva Carcano at a pre-march religious rally. (You can read my assistant Connor Ewing's article here.) She was bewailing a 2008 Iowa immigration raid. Officials of her denomination oppose any substantive enforcement of current immigration law and resist the imposition of new law. Carcano denounced "that despicable wall" along America's border with Mexico that has "brought a shadow upon this country as dark as night."
Does national sovereignty serve any providential role for the Religious Left? Apparently not. Bishop Carcano seems to oppose any kind of border protections. "As people of faith, we knew it was coming because the God we serve won't let walls of oppression and separation stand," she enthused about a bureaucratic slow-down in completing the long-discussed southern border fence. "The sea had refused to let those pillars stand," Carcano rejoiced over the destruction of a coastal border fence by waves. "If the waters of the sea could do that to the pillars, what could we Christians do if we let the waters of our baptism…topple the pillars of injustice?"
Apparently the Lord wants anyone to be able to walk across the U.S. border unimpeded. Carcano insisted that CIR's critics are opposing "the reign of God." It's not clear if the Religious Left believes the Almighty opposes national boundaries for any nation, or just for the United States. Either way, many of these religious activists assert that Christian compassion requires that all of U.S. citizenship's benefits should automatically be available to everyone of the world's over 6 billion people. It is a sweeping claim.
Joining the Religious Left at least as of last year is the once solidly conservative National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), which has endorsed CIR and the "March for America." Some NAE voices are weary from combat over abortion and same-sex marriage and see CIR, like the NAE's environmental activism, as supposedly less culturally confrontational. The NAE's pro-CIR resolution, approved last year, recalls how the "Bible contains many accounts of God's people who were forced to migrate." And it insists that God's people must show a "generous spirit" towards the ostensibly displaced. (Read my colleague Alan Wisdom's analysis of the NAE stance here.)
Regarding law enforcement and national security, the NAE resolution was somewhat dismissive of any "simplistic defense of 'the rule of law,'" and only grudgingly admitted "God has established the nations (Deut. 32:8, Acts 17:26), and their laws should be respected." At least the NAE grants more than the old Religious Left, which snarls at the mere mention of border fences. With similar brevity, the NAE acknowledged that some "communities now struggle with significant stress on infrastructures in education, health care, social services, and the legal system" because of immigration.
But the NAE breezily conflated legal immigrants with illegals, and failed to distinguish between economic migrants and refugees, even victims of religious persecution, whose plight presumably would merit NAE's special attention. The NAE also complained that current quota systems preclude enough visas for current labor needs, without explaining how this is true during a recession, or how greater immigration would affect current legally resident immigrants, not to mention others on the bottom of the economic ladder.
The NAE does not directly challenge national sovereignty or law enforcement as the old Religious Left does. But it does mostly repeat the Religious Left's mistake of confusing the state's responsibilities with the church's. The former providentially upholds the law, defends its people, and punishes malefactors. The latter offers ministry and grace to all persons. These two callings are not at odds. But the religious activists marching last Sunday, whether evangelical or oldline liberals, largely assume that governments must endlessly offer mercy and benefits to all comers without regard to behavior. Traditional Christian teachings would recognize such an approach as anarchic and lacking moral perspective, breeding injustice for all parties.
A recent commentary from an NAE official could just as easily have come from the National Council of Churches, romanticizing the "sojourner," and insisting that "those who welcome strangers are said to be entertaining angels." Religious immigration activists commonly identify biblical heroes as struggling immigrants, by implication supposedly having violated the immigration laws of ancient Israel or Egypt. "We see the hand of God in the movement of peoples throughout history," this NAE official proclaimed.
No doubt. But is God opposed to any lawful restrictions on immigration? Has God provided clear legislative guidance on the best immigration laws for the modern United States? Does Christian compassion compel disregard of or resistance to current immigration law? Few of the religious immigration marchers on Sunday seem to have answered these questions very seriously.

Obama the Messiah! He promised historic change and now we're going to get it, and he's just getting started! I talked to a guy a couple of weeks ago who had the guts to admit to me that he had voted for Obama for the most stated reasons, young articulate, fresh, he wanted to take part in the historic event of voting for the first black president I have to admit I was barely able to contain myself.
I don't no how I composed myself but I did and told them this is what you get when you base your important decisions on emotions, I recounted to him all the warnings and information on the man's life since he was a child he made it to me he thought it was right wing Republican lies, to make a longer story short he definitely had his come to Jesus moment and I suspect so have many others having been mugged by reality and the truth is they bought a pig in a poke.

Personally I think the political class is doing the equivalent of poking a finger in our chest and shoving us while shouting "what are you going to do now? Ha, come on and do something," it's almost like they're trying to provoke violence, Pelosi and her minions walking arm in arm through the crowd of protesters holding her giant gavel like some kind of sovereign, it's almost like they want to provoke violence, it would certainly give them the catalyst that they would need to assault our second amendment rights, for socialist utopia to work the populace cannot be armed.

They most definitely want to provoke violence, as they can then point fingers and marginalize conservatives even further. Repealing the second amendment would just be icing on the cake.

The USCCB Catholic Bishops are supporting immigration, too. I have seen brochures in the Church and in the Archdiocese of Atlanta's Georgia Bulletin of May 18, 2010: OBAMA ASSURES IMMIGRATION ADVOCATES OF COMMITMENT TO REFORM. There was nothing in this paper about the threats in Obamacare and impending passage. March 22, 2010 Les Femmes writes: THE BISHOPS SHARES THE BLAME IN OBAMACARE.
I am a Catholic since 2002 with a Baptist background who attends Mass almost daily.

Amen brother! It appears that these "bishops" are really community organizers and not followers of Christ. Their mission is a social one. Their congregation is not of "Documented Americans" but of illegals. Only parts of the Holy Bible apply to their work. We do need to find a solution for the immigration problem and it needs to be a methodical process. Most of these people have spent a lot of money just to get here. They need to spend a lot more to get a provisional workers card to stay and be a contributing member of our nation. Not a free pass voters card!

Would Jesus run a drug cartel today ? I bet one way or another that kinda money is funding some ofthese people. I know we must stick to principled arguments, but a strong, factual counter argument to the consequences of what these people are proposing is needed. At best they are loons, but I believe more and more that primarily they are traitors and scum. Conservatives and republicans and independents are now poised to be the defender of the blue collar worker, the tradesman, the small contractor. The immigrants will wipe these people out , they already are. They can charge less because they don't pay taxes fully or at all, are rarely licensed and insured, and by excepting a lower standard of living will gladlyearn less. Our tradesman wish to live reasonably well, at least own a decent home for their families, drive a nice car, take a summer vacation with family, maybe even own a boat-tsk,tsk, those Catholic Bishops will no doubt condemn these aspirations as some kinda sin. Give me a pro choice, pro economic growth, pro American exceptionalism Rino over a pro life Catholic any day of the week. Time to wake up and smell the coffee ideological purists. Time to be pragmatic on who we welcome into the tent. We need to at least be the party of several big tents, and time to time sit around the same campfire and pass the peace pipe amongst ourselves. One of the favorite pastimes our liberal denominations and National Council of Churches types (there are rare differences between to the two) is launching fireballs at their more conservative and/or fundamentalist co-religionists. This is in part because they genuinely look down their noses at these “simplistic” and “Bible literalists” churches. Just as important, liberals are very self-conscious and they want it to be seen that they are not like THAT kind of Christian. None the less, when the need arises, liberals are not above using arguments they otherwise distain.
The Christian left has been involved in politics as Christian liberals for decades. (Liberals whose activism is a direct response to the Christian Gospel. As opposed to liberals who just happen to be Christians.) When Jerry Fallwell and company entered the public forum in the late 1970’s, the Christian left suddenly developed grave concerns for the separation of Church and State. More specifically, the injustice and arrogance of a religious people imposing their doctrinal standards on a secular, multicultural society. Today, however, the Left shows no such restraint or concern in imposing on this secular and multicultural society “Biblical commands” for “welcoming” the stranger and immigrant among us.
Normally, when it comes to obedience to Biblical commands, the thinking heads of the left seek to blunt them by finding some lack of nuance and/or understanding of the ancient cultural conditions which in the “modern context”—all of which render the command meaningless. In our most recent wars over sexual issues (co-habitation, abortion, homosexuality etc.) knowledgeable theologians will assure us that it is “problematic” to develop a “sexual ethic” from the Bible. “Problematic” in the sense that any ethics derived from the Scriptures concerning sex are illegitimate. Yet, as it comes to the subject of immigration, Biblical passages for the treatment of immigrants, those passages are quoted without nuance or understanding of their times. These commands are as absolute as any fundamentalist may claim. “God said it. I believe it. That settles it.”
.
As to the current issue of immigration, the religious left have taken a public question and baptized the issue. Failure to subscribe to the “holy” outlook means that not only are you mistaken but you are against God Himself. Yet, one can’t escape the suspicion, that if the current wave of immigrants were Conservative voted Republican, the religious left’s ardor for the “strangers among us” would cool to non-existence.
Margie| 3.26.10 @ 12:49PM

Among the more pretentious pronouncements of organized religion is the claim to competence in matters of national security and what it actually takes to improve the lives of ordinary Americans. Also, their pronouncements on immigration ‘reform,’ while entertaining do not rise to any level that would require a thinking individual to take them seriously.
It is a mainstay of left leaning organized religion and the left in general that individual voices are important and should be heard, unless, that is, they are the voices of the right and happen also to be reflective of what a majority of Americans want.
Politically speaking, Obama and the dems would be playing with more than the fires of hell if they go after immigration ‘reform.’

I wonder what Bishop Carcano would say if she knew what Cesar Chavez and his brother used to do. They used to lead their own bands of "Minutemen" to the Mexican border and beat up illegal aliens trying to cross into the U.S. and take the farm jobs being done by Hispanic Americans.
Lest we forget, it's Hispanic Americans who suffer most when cheap immigrant labor is allowed to cross the border without consequences. All the good that the United Farm workers union was able to do for its members was completely undone once illegal aliens began flooding the U.S.
I'm reminded of a cynical comment by edward Abbey, who said nothing would ever be done about illegal immigration, because there were too many Republicans who loved cheap labor and too many Democrats who loved cheap causes.
carolinem| 3.26.10 @ 1:54PM
The Catholic Church, John McCain and President Bush strongly advocate amensty for illegal aliens, believing that lawbreaking and stealing from taxpayers is worth the support they expecte from a new constituency. Selling out truth and integrity for cheap ethnic support shouldn't surprise the public, for that's how politicians and religious elites behave, elevating themselves and their own interests over what is right.
Nick| 3.26.10 @ 5:50PM
Carolinem,
The "Catholic Church" has no teaching regarding amnesty for illegal aliens.
Certain bishops of the Catholic Church, personally, are in favor of amnesty, but that has no authority over any Roman Catholic.
Bishops only have authority over their particular dioceses, and only to teach the Faith through the Magesterium of the Catholic Church and ecclesiastical affairs.
Hope this clears things up for you.
carolinem| 3.26.10 @ 7:22PM
The Catholic Church openly supports amnesty for illegal aliens and verbally and in writing criticize those who disagree as racist or lacking compassion. [As Dennis Prager aptly points out, the Left always assumes those opposed to it are evil.] See the following web sites for confirmation of the Church's express advocacy of illegal alien amnesty: www.the-tidings.com/2010/032610/immigration.htm

Nick, labeling anyone who criticizes the Roman Catholic Church as a "bigot" is unreasonable. Every Christian has the duty to do as the Bereans in Paul's day did -- to examine what is taught in churches and see if it conforms to what God has revealed in the Bible. The teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, like those of any other religious body, should be examined thoroughly and criticized whenever necessary. Stop the name-calling.

Unless......are you arguing that pederasty and pedophilia are teachings of the Catholic Church?
Also, I pointed out that amnesty for illegal aliens is not a teaching of Church. Did you miss that?
I refuted her criticism, politely, and she attacked me and the Church with calumnies.

Stop name-calling| 3.29.10 @ 11:11AM
The thousands of Irish youngsters who were abused and molested by Catholic clergy and employees over six or seven decades probably were convinced that pederasty and pedophilia were indeed teachings of the Catholic Church. Beatings, too.
A boy on my street was molested by his priest when we were kids. He told his parents, but they told him to stop saying such things, because a priest would never do such a thing. They broke faith with their son out of loyalty to their priest -- and the molestation continued.
Now we're hearing accusations in Germany.
"Think before you type"? My friend thinks before he believes anything that a Catholic priest tells him, and he isn't the only one.

I can't speak specifically to your anecdotal evidence, you could be making it up.
But, if you had done any research on the subject, you would know that the incidences of priests committing these vile acts is no greater than other denominations. Or other professions. In fact, some are worse.
Public school teachers are routinely shuffled around and hidden, and have been for "six or seven" decades. Where's the exposé on this?
The media only report these stories to hurt the Catholic Church, because they are anti-Catholic bigots.
And you repeat them for the same reason.

The Jewish-Latino alliance on immigration issues builds on the heritage and experience of the Jewish community and on the enthusiasm and urgent needs of the Hispanic community, which has a strong interest in issues of family unification and the status of the some 12 million illegal immigrants, most of them from Latin America.
But Jewish activists also see the joint work as an opening for cooperation with the Hispanic community on other issues, such as Israel.

You informed me that his was nothing new and for over a hundred years there have been bishops who do not believe the Nicene or Apostles Creed. When one joins a church they swear to a set of beliefs with God as their witness. Since membership is voluntary in any of the organizations, if there is no way to remove the "rotten apples from the barrel" as you have told me, you and I are wasting precious time and money attempting to bring these dying and corrupt organizations back to life. Ben_Blacklisted| 3.28.10 @ 4:34PM
Clearly The Kenyan, Pelosi, et al are going to ram immigration reform through--just like their "health care reform" law.
We need a comprehensive battle plan to stop it. First we need to identify those businesses that hire illegals. When the true unemployment rate is close to 17% why does any illegal still have a job--let alone those with Legal Resident status. The unemployed in the area of this business need to apply for jobs with these businesses. When turned down for work, a picket should be set up and lawsuits should be threatened.
Next--Since this Amnesty plan is merely a ruse to suddenly added 12 to 20 million Democrat voters nationwide we need reframe the arguement. It should not be "a path to citizenship" as the Democrats say. It is a "path to dictatorship" by the Progressive left. When they dispute that, offer to accept ammnesty without a path to citizenship. A path to legal status with no citizenship = no new democrat voters. Make illegal aliens who wish to become Americans self-deport to their native land and apply to come here legally through the normal immigration channels. Some people wait years for the Green Card. Make the border jumpers get in the back of the line with everyone else who DID NOT CHEAT AND DID NOT VIOLATE OUR LAWS.
Green card legal residence only? Pay fine. Pay all back taxes. no welfare, etc. No path to citizenship. No voting rights for illegal aliens.
