The Right Prescription

The Fight Will Go On

The first battle over Obamacare has been lost. But the struggle over the future of the nation’s health care system continues.

Whatever it might mean for Democrats in November, last night represented one of the biggest victories in the history of American liberalism.

During his campaign, President Obama made clear that he wanted to be a transformative liberal leader who “changed the trajectory of America.” Once he signs the comprehensive health care bill into law this week, Obama will deliver on that promise, and complete the third major wave of entitlement expansion in America.

Now it’s up to conservatives to make sure that the victory is short-lived.

Let’s be under no illusions. There’s a reason why the battle over this health care bill dragged on for so long and was so bitterly fought. Once a law is enacted that delivers benefits to a given constituency, it becomes very hard to overturn. Not even the conservative icon Ronald Reagan, for instance, was willing to lay a finger on the big box entitlement programs of Medicare and Social Security.

But with that said, there are a number of things unique to Obamacare that make it vulnerable.

While Social Security and Medicare passed Congress with large majorities in both chambers, Obamacare passed without a single Republican vote — and with 34 defections among House Democrats. The process was tainted by legislative maneuvers and back room deals, and rammed through in the face of overwhelming public opposition.

Furthermore, because Democrats had to make the legislation appear cheaper over the Congressional Budget Office’s ten-year budget window, they delayed the bulk of the benefits until 2014, while many of the unpopular aspects of the legislation, such as the huge tax increases, kick in almost immediately.

In the immediate term, no matter what the odds of success, every legal avenue must be exhausted to challenge any and all provisions that have a chance of being overturned in the courts. At the same time, conservatives must be pushing Republican candidates to pledge to work not just to repeal certain aspects of the bill, but, to borrow a line from Jaws, to go after the head, the tail, the whole damn thing. (Sen. Jim DeMint has already announced that this week he would offer a bill to do just that.)

If efforts to repeal or overturn Obamacare fail, then the battle will have to enter the next stage. At some point after it is implemented — whether this is five years or 10 years from now, there will be another major health care debate. Despite President Obama’s promises, premiums will still be skyrocketing and the spiraling cost of health care will be putting a strain on individuals, businesses and the federal government.

When that day comes, liberals will argue that the reason why all of those problems exist is that Obamacare 1.0 didn’t go far enough. They’ll say that the government needs to spend more money on subsidies, place more regulations on insurance companies, and introduce a public option to drive down costs — or maybe even go the single-payer route altogether. Conservatives cannot be in a position to lose that argument.

If Obamacare is fully enacted, then conservatives should make sure that Democrats are held accountable for the problems with the health care system. The rising premiums should be blamed on the burdensome regulations that force individuals to purchase the amount of insurance that the federal government dictates they must have, rather than the type that they freely choose. The out of control health care spending should be blamed on the reality that when the government is picking up the tab for something, people tend to spend more. The crushing deficits we’ll be facing should be blamed on the accounting tricks Democrats used to hide the true cost of their proposals.

When Americans have to undergo long wait times in doctors offices, when individuals have to file their tax returns each year and present proof of government-approved insurance or pay more taxes, when the private sector has to digest a raft of new taxes and mandates, they’ll be more open to hearing conservative alternatives. Keep in mind that this will all be happening within the broader context of the entitlement crisis, with Social Security and Medicare running deficits, and further reinforcing the unaffordable cost of massive government.

In the meantime, conservatives should continue to make the affirmative case that the only way to truly bring down costs and improve quality of care is to have a system that is built around individual consumers making their own choices about how to spend their own money, not one in which health care dollars are controlled by employers and the government.

Obamacare, no doubt, puts America on the road to government-run health care. But as long as there’s still a prospect of changing course, conservatives should never stop fighting.

If Obamacare is so good, why are all the wealthy politicians and their families exempt from it. This will not affect the rich because if their insurance turns down a claim for them of a family member they will be able to afford to pay out of pocket as will all the democrats who voted for this bill. I will be convinced that this health care bill is good when dabama and all his cronies are subjected to the same punishment as the rest of the american people.

L. Banks| 3.22.10 @ 11:00AM

God had nothing to do with this...and if you think you are getting universal health care, think again. The US is in debt and that debt is growing each day. Currently we are unable to balance a one year budget since our expenses outweigh our intake. How can we now afford this bill? The only way is to increase taxes on everyone. There are many people who are so disgusted they will not work so no income from them. The number of retirees will increase thus increasing social security costs and MEDICARE since this is not scheduled to be finalized for four years. One third of the doctors and medical people will leave public care and create their own groups for people who want to pay for their own healthcare and if they are smart they will buy up some hospitals. Many doctors will retire or switch to another occupations. Also, this will be mostly a government program and if you know the government there will be red tape and limitations and fine print and costs for administration and power struggles, etc. This is not Universal Health care because it will never give everyone the care we have right now. The care will be dimished and the people working in the system will receive less pay and more patients so there is no incentive for them to "care". This is control and this is the loss of your rights to choose which doctor you want to perform a procedure to save your life. This is a crap shoot on what you get. I guarantee you it is not universal and it is not healthcare that you want. Obviously, you have not studied this bill and do not know what it says and does. Since 73% of Americans did not want this healthcare their voice has not been heard and those who are supposed to represent them did ignored those they represent. Why because it benefits big companies, big pharmas who stand to gain, George Soros, our enemies who will destroy us from within, but not the people themselves. To cheer for the passage of legislation that is against the will of the people is cheering for evil because evil is the use of one's will over others. This is a constitutional, moral and financial disaster. It is also the beginning of the "Second Revolution". For Taxation without Representation started the first revolution and the 2nd Revolution has now begun.

I have the tv on behind me and just heard a reporter say that the first "benefit," which is coverage for those who can't get coverage elsewhere due to pre-existing conditions, is currently estimated to start in "about six months." It will 2013 or later before the roll-out of the program "benefits" for all even begin.

So, two to three or even more years of smaller paychecks due to higher taxes while at the same time receiving none of the so-called benefits. Sounds like a real bargain, eh?

I shamelessly copy pasted this comment by me from another column here today. It bears re-reading, I think.

The communists, (pardon the shorthand), have crossed the "Rubicon". They have burned their boats on the beach behind them.

They have now taken off their masks for all to see what they really are.

Over the next weeks and months we will see them gloating and grinning...and reaching for more.

We will also see whiners, quitters, and nit pickers here and on every other website and news source.

Screw all that!

Now.....demonstrations are nice. Tea-party get togethers are encouraging insofar as they remind us we are not alone in the fight.
BUT,
Now it is time to begin picking the battlefields and filling sand-bags. I am going to remind you folks of something you may have forgotten. You ground combat veterans certainly have not forgotten.

DEFENSE in depth requires a force only one/fourth the size of an attacking force to win a battle.
And, that folks must remind us that we must pick our OFFensive battles very carefully, and utilize maneuver and flank-thrusts. We must not be drawn into frontal assaults...at least until after November 2010.

Everyone has been jabbering about how "tough" it is to repeal an entitlement. Yep. But remember, the goodies don't start flowing for 3 or 4 years.
We must win the offensive battle at the ballot-box, folks.
There is where your local tea-party is crucial. We folks know who the leaders are...that will lead from the front.
Let me take it a step further: PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS. Use a round number. $20 times some five hundred thousand population in a congressional district equals...$10 million dollars for a campaign. Say only half the folks are on our side. That is still $5 million....a very respectable Rep campaign fund.
(PS: If you are in a hopeless district with too many commie-libs...find the nearest district where a solid "restorationist leader" is running...and put your money there.

REMEMBER! quiet defense every day. OFFENSE in the communists' flanks where it counts, with the least number of casualties...until November.
God bless America.

Subject: Who is winning the Healthcare Debate?

I have chosen to focus on helping the Republicans to win the healthcare debate to show my stuff. Try following my lead on this issue & you will eventually get traction. You have nothing to lose.

Who is winning the Healthcare Debate?

By Black Cell

Barack Obama is handily winning the early rounds of that debate, because he is controlling the most important aspect of the debate, & that is its cost.

While the president is hoping that he could convince voters to agree with his massive overhaul of the U.S. health care system by offering cuts to Medicare & Medicaid, the Republican focus seem to be all over the map as they tout a list of reasons to be against the different plans championed by Democrats.

What seems to be the focal point within the Republicans perspective is that they fear the government taking over the healthcare industry. The issues concerning the sky rocketing cost of healthcare doesn't seem to be a major issue to them.

But the rising cost of health care & the rising numbers of uninsured is fueling the debate surrounding that issue, & not the question should we allow the federal government the power to eventually take over that industry.

Its rising cost has forced many Americans to struggle to pay their medical bills. Employees are more & more complaining that they cannot afford high premiums for health insurance. Employers are cutting back or eliminating health benefits. Even state and federal governments are struggling to afford the rising cost of public programs like Medicaid and Medicare.

So, why should we buy into the typical rhetoric by politicians that claim they can save us more money by putting the burden of the sky rocketing cost on the tax payers back?

Even though I agree with the fact that the federal government will eventually take sole control over healthcare cost because businesses will eventually opt out of healthcare & force their employees to receive the Federal governments healthcare for financial reasons, I believe the real issue is that what President Obama is trying to offer, lower cost healthcare, can't be accomplished by the feds eventually taking over that industry.

I believe that the large number of U.S citizens who are uninsured & the even larger number of elderly who are receiving private care, along with the potentially large numbers of employers shifting their employees to the government programs will eventually overwhelm the federal government & force taxes to have to be raised or eventually the quality of healthcare will drop.

While Democrats are using their pull with the media to market how businesses (specifically small businesses) are struggling to pay for rising medical cost, Republicans could be using the same information to point out that if many of those businesses had the option to dump their healthcare cost onto the federal government there is a likely hood that they would.

How does the federal government taken over those businesses healthcare costs lower the over all cost in general?

President Obama says by creating more competition, but the reality is that the only thing would be happening is that businesses would be only shifting their burden onto the taxpayers.

Maybe the Republicans should be attempting to force Democrats to explain why the existing government ran healthcare programs Medicare & Medicaid are struggling, & conclude that Democrats should be solving those problems before taking on such projects as what ever version of universal healthcare they are marketing.

I am hoping that the Republicans start to focus more on the rising cost of healthcare & how the burden will be solely put on the backs of the tax payers if President Obama's plan is enacted.

I believe our President is fighting a noble cause, but it is one that the private industry can't solve, so why put that burden on the rest of us?

Here are two videos showing how weak the republicans look in this debate. That could be changed if they fight Obama on the issue he is trying to champion.

Appearing on CBS' Face The Nation Sunday, McConnell told host Bob Schieffer that Mr. Obama's plan for a government health insurance plan would essentially crowd out other insurers from the private market, eliminating competition.

Chapter 2

A few days later I got what I needed from the Congressional Budget Office

CBO released preliminary estimates suggesting that the health care proposals — the most ambitious currently under discussion — from the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee would cost $1 trillion and trim the number of uninsured by only 16 million.

Read it for yourself :

http://budget.senate.gov/democ.....s/2009/CBO Letter HealthReformAndFederalBudget_061609.pdf

CONGRESSIONAL BUDGET OFFICE Douglas W. Elmendorf, Director
U.S. Congress
Washington, DC 20515
June 15, 2009
Honorable Edward M. Kennedy
Chairman
Committee on Health, Education,
Labor, and Pensions
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Mr. Chairman:
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the staff of the Joint
Committee on Taxation (JCT) have completed a preliminary analysis of the
major provisions related to health insurance coverage that are contained in
title I of draft legislation called the Affordable Health Choices Act, which
was released by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and
Pensions (HELP) on June 9, 2009. Among other things, that draft
legislation would establish insurance exchanges (called “gateways”)
through which individuals and families could purchase coverage and would
provide federal subsidies to substantially reduce the cost of that coverage
for some enrollees.
The attached table summarizes our preliminary assessment of the
proposal’s budgetary effects and its likely impact on insurance coverage.
According to that assessment, enacting the proposal would result in a net
increase in federal budget deficits of about $1.0 trillion over the 2010–2019
period. Once the proposal was fully implemented, about 39 million
individuals would obtain coverage through the new insurance exchanges.
At the same time, the number of people who had coverage through an
employer would decline by about 15 million (or roughly 10 percent), and
coverage from other sources would fall by about 8 million, so the net
decrease in the number of people uninsured would be about 16 million.
It is important to note, however, that those figures do not represent a formal
or complete cost estimate for the draft legislation, for reasons outlined
below. Moreover, because expanded eligibility for the Medicaid program
may be added at a later date, those figures are not likely to represent the
impact that more comprehensive proposals—which might include a
Honorable Edward M. Kennedy
Page 2
significant expansion of Medicaid or other options for subsidizing coverage
for those with income below 150 percent of the federal poverty level—
would have both on the federal budget and on the extent of insurance
coverage.
Key Provisions Related to Health Insurance Coverage
Subtitles A through D of title I of the Affordable Health Choices Act would
seek to increase the number of legal U.S. residents who have health
insurance. Toward that end, the federal government would provide grants to
states to establish insurance exchanges and—more importantly—would
subsidize the purchase of health insurance through those exchanges for
individuals and families with income between 150 percent and 500 percent
of the federal poverty level; those subsidies would represent the greatest
single component of the proposal’s cost. The proposal would also impose a
financial cost on most people who do not obtain insurance, the size of
which would be set by the Secretary of the Treasury.
The draft legislation released by the HELP Committee also indicates that
certain features may be added at a later date. Because they are not reflected
in the current draft, however, CBO and the JCT staff did not take them into
account. In particular, the draft legislation does not contain provisions that
would change the Medicaid program, although it envisions that the
authority to extend Medicaid coverage will be added during Senate
consideration of the bill. (By itself, adding such provisions would increase
the proposal’s budgetary costs and would also yield a larger increase in the
number of people who have health insurance.) The draft legislation also
indicates that the committee is considering whether to incorporate other
features, including a “public health insurance option” and requirements for
“shared responsibility” by employers. Depending on their details, such
provisions could also have substantial effects on our analysis. (A summary
of the key provisions that were included in this analysis is attached.)
Important Caveats Regarding This Preliminary Analysis
There are several reasons why the preliminary analysis that is provided in
this letter and its attachments does not constitute a comprehensive cost
estimate for the Affordable Health Choices Act:
• First, this analysis focuses exclusively on the major provisions on health
insurance coverage contained in certain subtitles of title I of the draft
legislation. Although other provisions in title I, along with provisions in
the other five titles of the legislation, would have significant budgetary
effects, the analysis contained in this letter and its attachment is limited
to the provisions in subtitles A through D regarding health insurance
coverage.

Lets take a look at the math of health care in the Senate
by UpstateDem
Sun Jun 14, 2009 at 03:11:45 PM PDT
I have been doing a lot of thinking over the past couple days about how we will get health care with a public option through the Senate. Before October, we are going to need 60 votes to pass it and it appears to be a very uphill battle. It appears that every Republican but Olympia Snowe will not vote for healthcare reform with the public option. That leaves us with a solid 39 NO votes. It looks like Joe Lieberman, Mary Landrieu, and likely Kent Conrad and Ben Nelson will oppose the plan. That puts the NO votes at a certain 43, more than enough to kill the plan without reconciliation.
In October, reconcilation kicks in and Democrats will only need 50 votes plus Biden to pass the plan. This seems like a more reachable goal. Lets for all intents and purposes say that in the end Olympia Snowe, Blanche Lincoln, and Evan Bayh also decide to oppose the bill. That brings the NO votes up to 46. Assuming Democrats can get everyone seated(including Franken), they can lose up to four more Democratic votes and pass the plan with 50 votes with Vice President Joe Biden breaking the tie.
I dont think people realize how difficult this is going to be. We could not get this in the 1940's under Truman and were unable to get it under Clinton in 1993 with a Democratic majority almost as big. I feel that if we cannot get this done this time, we wont even be talking about universal healthcare again for another 15 or 20 years. I dont think we will ever see circumstances this favorable for many years.

****
Appearing on CBS' Face The Nation Sunday, McConnell told host Bob Schieffer that Mr. Obama's plan for a government health insurance plan would essentially crowd out other insurers from the private market, eliminating competition.

THE LANGUAGE OF HEALTHCARE 2009
By Dr. Frank I. Luntz
This document is based on polling results and Instant Response dial sessions conducted in April 2009. It captures not just what Americans want to see but exactly what they want to hear. The Words That Work boxes that follow are already being used by a few Congressional and Senatorial Republicans. From today forward, they should be used by everyone.
You simply MUST be vocally and passionately on the side of reform. The status quo is no longer acceptable. If the dynamic becomes “President Obama is on the side of reform and Republicans are against it,” then the battle is lost and every word in this document is useless. Republicans must be for the right kind of reform that protects the quality of healthcare for all Americans. And you must establish your support of reform early in your presentation.
THE 10 RULES FOR STOPPING THE “WASHINGTON TAKEOVER” OF HEALTHCARE
(1) Humanize your approach.
(2) Acknowledge the “crisis” or suffer the consequences.
(3) “Time” is the government healthcare killer.
(4) The arguments against the Democrats’ healthcare plan must center around “politicians,” “bureaucrats,” and “Washington” … not the free market, tax incentives, or competition.
(5) The healthcare denial horror stories from Canada & Co. do resonate, but you have to humanize them.
(6) Healthcare quality = “getting the treatment you need, when you need it.”
7) “One-size-does-NOT-fit-all.”

…Democrats weren’t able to pass their signature initiative without throwing around indescribably vast bundles of taxed or borrowed money.  Of course, they infamously attempted to dole out patently unfair benefits for particular states.   Meanwhile, the executive busied himself impressing yokel congressmen with the aforementioned meaningless proclamation or free flight. Of course, we’ve come to expect such reality…

Last six months have been quite traumatizing for Acorn, the liberal activist group, whose 15 state chapters have been disbanded. The biggest setback came in the form of its two largest chapters, California and New York, severing their ties with the national group. "

Is it true that entitlement laws are hard to repeal? Perhaps for the popular medicare and SSI. But Obamacare is not popular and it does not benefit, instead harms, seniors who are a big and powerful voting bloc. We will see.

The Underground Conservative | 3.22.10 @ 1:18PM

It can be de-funded by a GOP House. Simply not allocating any funds for various aspects of it. Start by de-funding the 17,000 stormtroopers wearing jackboots and Nazi bucket helmets for enforcement of the mandate. De-fund anything else that needs federal funds to commence.

In January 2013 with a new president, repeal as Quint said and Mr. Klein cited, "the head, the tail, the whole damn thing."

carnot| 3.22.10 @ 8:21PM

true...but the comedy is that...aside from the onerous tax burdens...the real benefits don't kick in until after the next election...at which time someone more amenable to repeal will be in office.

one sad aspect of all of this but visibly observable:

- the Dems in their anger to oppose the Iraq war suffered no compunction in basically abetting the enemy and increasing the likelihood of American battlefield deaths. they, of course, will never admit so...but that was the reality of THEIR ACTIONS.

- similarly, and unfortunately, the path to undoing Obamacare is going to be sustained and growing unemployment. not an attractive prospect. but one must learn from the Dems...no price is too high.

No buying from government car companies (GM and Chrysler).

No patronization of government owned banks.

Do not purchase from companies with a unionized workforce, whenever possible.

No patronization of companies that supported Obamacare.

Encourage small businesses to hire NO one (although Obama has done a good job of this himself).

Purchase only what is essential and nothing frivolous.

Change your 401K and private investments to money markets and or bonds. I’ve already done so.

Do not watch Obama sympathetic major networks.

Do not go to movies. Hollywood is the front line of our enemy.

What a great day for the United States. This is the end of the beginning. This was the first step towards universal healthcare for all. Other Western democracies have universal government run healthcare and they have excellent systems and it costs them less per capita than in the US. I lived in Canada for a couple of years, and the healthcare system is great there- do not judge it if you have not experienced it. I also lived in France, the treatment was first class. If you need a procedure it is done within days- literally. And what is your bill when you leave? NOTHING. How much do drugs and antibiotics cost? About 80% less than in the United States. The difference between the United States and other Western democracies is that, the US healthcare is a business. In other countries Healthcare is viewed as a right and something that all people should have access to, regardless of age, religion, social or economic status. In other Western democracies, if a politician would ever propose to dismantle government healthcare there would be a revolution. I hope one day, this becomes a reality in the United States. Government run healthcare is run in almost all advanced countries: member states of the European Union, Canada, Israel, Taiwan and many more. And they are better for it. If you were to ask any of those people if they wanted to change their healthcare system for the US model- they would laugh at you- thinking what a good joke!
We are better for this change- this is not a PERFECT bill- but it is a step in the right direction. I know I will get assailed by being called a crazy liberal, a communist etc... But that does not matter. Most of the people on this website remind me of those crazy tea party people who insulted Barney Frank for being gay, and even worse calling Congressman Lewis the "n" word- despicable as he is one of the most important individuals in the civil rights movement in American history. Yesterday was a great victory for the Democrats, but more importantly it was a great victory for the people of the United States.

danfromatlanta| 3.22.10 @ 1:09PM

You paint a rather rosey picture! You fail to mention the tax rate in France to pay for all that "free" healthcare, and the famous wait times in Canada. Folks in Canada come to the US if they need immediate care. And just how many wonder drugs are developed in France? And the fact that the French are a nation of wimpy pussies that rely on the US to keep them safe so they can pretend their socialist worker's utopia is anything like a success allows them to sneer down their noses at Americans. Socialism does not work, never has and never will! I invite you to become a citizen of France since you obviously fit my description of the typical Frog. Leave our best-in-the-world healthcare system the hell alone!

carnot| 3.22.10 @ 8:45PM

you must not understand what is truly going on here. those who have exemplified the best in America and its virtues are angry as all get out. I see it all over the place......people who were basically content with their diurnal preoccupations are energized like never before - they are not going to play along and they are not going to "rally to the Flag". a fundamental problem with the Obama strategy is that...aside from the fact that it makes a mockery of all his campaign promises (e.g., no new taxes for 95%)....the folks getting grilled the most are the ones paying the bills. the support comes from those who aren't doing the heavy lifting: I see it every day. this cannot survive in the long-run as the producers discover the loss in standard of living and opportunities for the families in service of those who do the least. the politics in this have been exceptionally cynical and cannot survive the hammering it will take on the hard anvil of government sponsored terror (read: regulation = monitor + detect + ENFORCE) and decreased opportunities, decreased expectations, reduced hope (ironically enough). I'm already hearing many cynically state: "I'll go work for the government...first day in my legs will be up on the desk and the nap will begin." Others are not no longer planning to achieve as much as possible for retirement but are instead shooting for a minimum standard/level of wealth at which they will retire earlier - taking their productive skills and experience with them at a net loss to the economy.

btw..I for one don't hate you. I don't particularly care who you are - you aren't a member of the groups I will be joining to undermine this nascent fascism (see: banking takeover, auto takeover, education takeover, healthcare takeover, deficit explosion, media abdication, etc., etc.). so crow.....the polity cannot survive with this much division...that's what you don't seem to fathom.

Jason| 3.22.10 @ 12:36PM

The American Spectator sowed its oats in the early 90's attacking Clinton, including his attempt on Health Care Reform. I think it's indicative of how far we've come since then and how low the Republican spin machine has fallen. The right needs to find a new angle. Their old tricks aren't working.

danfromatlanta| 3.22.10 @ 1:16PM

Since, Obama spent almost a trillion on stimulus, flushing it down the toilet. And he spent a trillion on a health care "fix" that was 7th on the top 10 things to do.

The economy still sucks.

carnot| 3.22.10 @ 10:19PM

you're missing the point: the "stimulus" bill was a slush fund for all manner of political payoffs/paybacks. but..per the playbook....just keep implying that it is the manifestation of "real" ideas...as Marcell does.

Were he actually clever his attempt at incendiary posts would be fun. but we saw the same a thousand times over in the last campaign.....it's gotten tedious.

KC| 3.22.10 @ 1:58PM

To those who are gloating today about Obummercare, have you read bill? know what you are getting?

To the poster on Canada's care, the WHO just released a report that ALL countries with socialized medical care had higher rates of death from cancer than the US. Why? Because the gov't won't pay for the more effective medicines, which are more expensive.

This is a letter from Indianapolis anesthesiologist Dr. Stephen E. Frazer, MD to his Senator
"As a practicing physician I have major concerns with the health care bill before Congress. I actually have read the bill and am shocked by the brazenness of the government’s proposed involvement in the patient-physician relationship. The very idea that the government will dictate and ration patient care is dangerous and certainly not helpful in designing a health care system that works for all. Every physician I work with agrees that we need to fix our health care system, but the proposed bills currently making their way through congress will be a disaster if passed.
I ask you respectfully and as a patriotic American to look at the following troubling lines that I have read in the bill. You cannot possibly believe that these proposals are in the best interests of the country and our fellow citizens.

Al Adab| 3.22.10 @ 4:06PM

Your very measuring standard is in error. Following a Marxist materialist standard leads to all sorts of problems. The true measure is not some system, but rather which nation is most free with fewest citizens being wards of the state. Imposition of mandates, taxes and "systems" makes slaves of the citizenry and dependants of us all. Shame.

We have come to that moment. Either we can submit and become wards of the state or we can resist in the hope of maintaining Liberty. The cost may be high, but submission's price is higher. We must not play, we must resist, we shall never bow the knee to this tyranny.

Melvin| 3.22.10 @ 3:51PM

After giving this issue a allot of thought, I have come up with the most equitable solution to the health care bill.
Close hospitals, and doctors offices for Baby Boomers. By doing this, the deficit will be pared down substantially, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will all save unimaginable amounts of funding due to Baby Boomers dying at a accelerated rate. Because that is what the politicians wanted all along correct?
The big political fear is, "How can the system cope without being overloaded by all the Boomers coming of age."
Because, ya really got to look at it this way. Why have this incremental approach with the Boomers, by raising their insurance premiums and then ultimately forcing them on government rationed care that will cause then to pass on slowly but not as fast as the government would
like.
Just knock the old bastards off with one fell swoop. Law of the jungle I'd say. Look at all the jobs this would create.
Reality shows could be created with prizes of medicine instead of money. How many Boomers would kill each other for high blood pressure medication or diabetes meds following along the popular reality show Survivor.
Oh here's a good one. "Rat your neighbor" pick a neighborhood and have the neighbors figure out who is the one who is black marketing medication or the unnamed doctor in the neighborhood who is running a guerrilla family practice clinic.
The prize could be a free visit to the government hospital.

"Melvin, you lost your frigging mind with this post.
To each to his own opinion, but if this Health Care Reform stands in present form. Our health care is going to become survival of the fittest and as it is rationed it will pit groups of Americans and immigrants against each other for their slice of the ever shrinking health care pie.
But look on the bright side. At least Nancy Pelosi will still be getting botox treatments at tax payer expense.

Lucinda| 3.23.10 @ 2:52AM

Melvin, a lot of those stupid liberals who voted for this crap are older than Boomers. What about them?
We'll get them first.

Sarah was right about "DEATH PANELS." ObamaCare rationing.

I attended the gathering at the Capitol building Friday with my wife and daughters. The size of the crowd was well short of the tea party crowd on 9/11. We stopped at Gettysbugh on Sunday coming home. As we stood in front of the plaque that recorded Lincoln's Gettysburg address we heard on the radio that the bill was likely going to pass. At that moment Lincoln's words sent a chill up my spine in the context of this health bill, and the arm twisting, constiutionally recklaess way that this bill was passed...Make no doubt we are engaged in a great battle to test whether this nation, concieved in Liberty can long stand. There is no greater test to these principles than this Health Care Bill. We are in a battle for our freedom, and the lines are drawn. Are you ready to fight the battle to ensure that that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth?

Conservatives just can’t seem to make up their mind about Saul Alinsky.

Was he a tactical genius to be imitated, an agitator whose teachings will undercut the right’s goals, a devil-worshiper leading young conservatives down the path to damnation, or some combination of all three?

The modern right harbors an “almost schizophrenic view of what they can use and learn from Alinsky, and yet he is this totally evil guy,” said Sanford D. Horwitt, author of “Let Them Call Me Rebel,” a biography of Alinsky.

And the debate among conservatives, most of whom had never heard of Alinsky until recently, is only picking up steam nearly four decades after his death in 1972.

Often described as the father of modern community organizing, Alinsky helped poor and working class urban communities around the country push for improved living and working conditions by confronting, satirizing or negotiating with the establishment, as well as by building diverse coalitions including small businesses, labor unions and religious groups, such as the Roman Catholic Church.

He’s long been a hero on the left, but the right’s fascination with him dates to the 2008 presidential campaign, when lots of attention was paid to Alinsky’s impact on leading Democratic contenders Hillary Clinton, who wrote her college thesis about him, and Barack Obama, who trained in — and utilized — his community organizing techniques.

Alinsky strictly resisted political labels and affiliations, once explaining “if you think you've got an inside track to absolute truth, you become doctrinaire, humorless and intellectually constipated.” But conservatives began invoking his name as something of an epithet to sully the left’s tactics as sneaky, underhanded, unethical — or Marxist.

But a funny thing happened on the way to Alinsky taking a place alongside top contemporary conservative bogeymen like Michael Moore, George Soros and Jane Fonda. His seminal 1971 guide to organizing, “Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals,” became a must-read for a new wave of conservative activists who mobilized — many for the first time — in opposition to the ambitious, big-government agenda pushed by President Obama and the Democratic Congress.

In the opening lines of “Rules,” Alinsky described its mission — and his approach — thus: “What follows is for those who want to change the world from what it is to what they believe it should be. 'The Prince' was written by Machiavelli for the Haves on how to hold power. 'Rules for Radicals' is written for the Have-Nots on how to take it away."

Suddenly, the book was being touted as a way to beat the left at its own game by everyone from 69-year-old former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, whose nonprofit group FreedomWorks has emerged as a leading Washington bulwark for the tea party movement, to 25-year-old James O’Keefe, the self-styled activist investigative journalist who last year became a conservative hero for secretly recording employees of the liberal community-organizing group ACORN apparently offering advice on how to set up a brothel, to tea party leaders seeking to disrupt congressional town halls.

But in the last couple months, there’s been something of a backlash on the right, both as a result of the arrest of O’Keefe and three colleagues during a botched plot to embarrass Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu, and because some conservatives are questioning whether Alinsky’s ideas and tactics — and, to some extent, the tea party movement as a whole — are intellectually consistent with American conservatism.

David Brooks, The New York Times’s leading conservative columnist, this month cited the tea party crowd’s embrace of Alinksy in blasting the movement’s “self-righteousness and naïve radicalism” and declaring it “radically anticonservative.”

Veteran Republican operative John Feehery then declared that when conservatives adopt Alinsky’s tactics, “they help further the cause of the left, which is social instability.”

And Dawn Eden, a conservative Roman Catholic author and blogger, last month observed disapprovingly that in the course of “exposing the alleged Alinsky-like tactics of the modern Left[,] some conservatives became Alinskyites themselves.”

Noting that the original version of “Rules” included an “acknowledgement to the very first radical ... Lucifer,” Eden and a co-author argued that Alinsky “served ... Lucifer” and deemed his tactics anathema to “St. Paul’s dictum that we cannot do evil that good may come.”

But according to Horwitt, many of Alinsky’s devotees and critics on the right — including O’Keefe, Brooks and Eden — misunderstand Alinsky’s teachings and legacy.

The Lucifer dedication, for instance, was “clearly meant as a joke — a normal person chuckles,” Horwitt said, adding Alinsky’s discourse on mean and ends was meant to provoke its practitioners to ask "does this particular end justify this particular means?"

Horwitt called out Brooks for branding Alinsky “the leading tactician of the New Left” — the wave of young activists who mobilized on college campuses against the Vietnam War and for civil rights.

“No! Totally wrong!” Horwitt said. “Alinsky didn’t connect with the young people in the New Left crowd, because he thought that, while their hearts were in the right place, they didn’t know how to organize and they were often committing the cardinal sin — they were organizing the opposition in his view by stupid tactics like burning the American flag and basically pissing on middle class symbols and values.”

Horwitt, who participated in a 10-day training session led by Alinsky and remained in touch with him until his death, called Alinsky “a great pragmatist” who “knew that your own little band was never enough to get things done. You had to reach a broader constituency and the New Left was simply turning off people that they needed to win over.”

Horwitt thinks Alinsky would have “sympathy for the kind of working and middle class folks who are at the tea parties, who the economy is hurting a lot and who are angry and kind of confused.”

But, he added, “If Alinsky sat down with the tea party people, one of the first things he would say is ‘you have got to stop calling Obama a socialist.’” Alinsky would see the socialism charge, as well as racially tinged criticism of Obama and questions about whether he was born in the United States and is eligible to be president (the “birther” argument) as “goofy” and limiting the appeal of the tea party’s underlying push for limited government and taxation, which Horwitt said “has pretty broad reach.”

On the other hand, Horwitt said, some in the tea party movement have at times faithfully applied Alinsky’s dictum to "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, polarize it.”

In fact, a conservative leader quoted the rule in a memo that circulated widely last summer that calmly detailed techniques for tea party activists seeking to disrupt congressional town halls. They could “rattle” and “set back on their heels” lawmakers and their staffs, the memo asserted, partly “us[ing] the Alinsky playbook of which the left is so fond: Freeze it, attack it, personalize it, and polarize it.”

O’Keefe, who had received — and later led — training on using Alinsky’s Rules against the left, said his videos were based on the book, and Horwitt said Alinsky “would have appreciated O’Keefe for his balls and his humor.” But he asserted Alinsky would never have endorsed “pretending you’re someone else in a public place.”

Firebrand talk show host Glenn Beck also has suggested his viewers use Alinsky’s tactics against the Obama administration. And he praised the artist behind the posters depicting Obama as the Joker from Batman over the word ‘socialism’ — which Beck contended utilized Alinsky’s rule declaring ridicule “man's most potent weapon.”

But Beck is among the most vocal Alinsky conspiracy theorists, calling him a “Marxist” and a “morally bankrupt individual who would use any means to achieve his ends” and suggesting Alinsky’s fingerprints can be found on what Beck describes as an elaborate Obama administration plot to hurtle the U.S. headlong into socialism — a plot that Beck believes includes the administration’s push to overhaul the nation’s health care system.

“While these community organizers appear to be agitating for a seemingly noble goal, or one or another, their underlying mission is — as Alinsky said — how the have-knots can take power from the haves,” Beck said on his Fox News television show last year. “If you know what Saul Alinsky was about, everything — everything that Obama does is going to start to make a little more sense.”

At various times, Beck also has accused the White House of using Alinsky’s tactics against him and fellow conservative talkers Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly, as well as tea party activists, birthers, critics who falsely alleged the health overhaul contained so-called death panels, and AIG executives, among others.

Armey, on the other hand, has a more nuanced view of Alinsky, telling the Financial Times last year: “What I think of Alinsky is that he was very good at what he did but what he did was not good.”

Employees of Armey’s FreedomWorks group have been studying and using Alinsky’s methods — including those in his often overlooked precursor to “Rules,” the 1946 “Reveille for Radicals” — since before he got hot, as an alternative to traditional conservative organizational tactics that focused on influencing elites and intellectuals. And FreedomWorks’ organizers utilized and spread the Alinsky gospel as they traveled the country last year helping newly engaged tea party activists set up their own groups.

“I put together a PowerPoint on grass-roots organizing and the favorite part for a lot of these organizers was how this leftist community organizer Saul Alinsky was so effective and how we can use his tactics against the left,” said FreedomWorks’ top organizer, Brendan Steinhauser.

“You become a better organizer when you understand that there is nothing new under the sun,” Steinhauser said of his appreciation of Alinsky. “All the pitfalls, the problems, the disputes — this is the way human beings are. Politics is a human science and this guy understood that. He was practical. He understood how to get competing factions and interests and individuals to get in the same room and form what he called a ‘peoples’ organization’ and to move in the same direction to take on city hall.”

That’s directly applicable to organizing the tea party movement, Steinhauser said “because we have social conservatives and more libertine libertarians and national security conservatives.” Like Alinsky, Steinhauser said he tries to agitate apathetic or disjointed groups into action, asserting that it was no small feat to “get conservatives to protest and to feel more comfortable using the tactics of the left to achieve our conservative ends.”

In addition to challenging this legislation in the courts and fighting any new Dem moves in Congress, the GOP must focus on taking the House and getting 8+ Senate seats.

Then in 2012, get the Senate and put Palin in at POTUS. She is the only charismatic, solid common-sense conservative on the horizon.

If the GOP, angry indies, and the TPM unite, we will be in position to repeal this mess and institue real reform and pull back the government.

Mitt is toast, stick a fork in him, Huck is not a conservative, T-Paw is afraid of his own shadow, and Thune is a pretty boy.

OhBummer's Healthcare Hijacking is nothing more than an atrocious act of vandalism, in the wake of which he struts around like the cxck-o-the-walk, arrogantly crowing that he has gotten away with this crime. He challenges those who would repeal this mess, daring them to lose votes in that enterprise, but one must remember that those who favor the Healthcare Hijacking would have voted for OhBummer and the OhBummer Wrecking Crew in any case. Perhaps OhBummer had better find a country with which we do not have an extradition treaty and start transferring his millions of dollars there now, as insurance against justice.
