Gov. Charlie Crist still has $8 million in the bank. Thus the GOP problem.
JACKSONVILLE -- I don't mean to break the rhythm of Brother Thornberry's magnificent rant elsewhere on this site, but the GOP Senate race here in Florida has entered a new and volatile stage. Former Speaker of the House Marco Rubio has opened up a 30-point lead. The primary is more than five months away. Rubio's opponent, Governor Charlie Crist, still has $8 million in the bank.
Thus the GOP problem. It would not be a shock to students of the human condition if the Governor, who once led this race by more than 40 points, were to crank up a retaliatory strike of biblical ferocity. Eight million dollars of negative ads would probably not be enough to nominate Crist, but it's probably enough to take down Rubio. Heck, in a state with no mega-media market, $8 million could take down Desmond Tutu, driving him down in the polls to somewhere between Al Sharpton and Jeremiah Wright.
A few conservatives spent some time with the Governor this past week. Their message was simple: Please don't, Charlie. Please don't atomize a promising young Republican, who, if he emerges from this primary tested but unscathed, can hold the seat for the party and be a forceful voice for conservative change in Washington.
How did these supplicants do? We won't know for a few weeks, but the early returns are not encouraging. The Governor's Lincoln Day speech in Nassau County Friday evening was a classic case of Charlie being Charlie. (Nassau County, I should explain, has few loose ends, politically speaking. The GOP carried the county 72-28 for McCain-Palin in 2008. That was a big Democratic year. The GOP will do better next time. Together with its neighbor to the south, Duval, the two counties take biennial responsibility for overtaking the Democratic majority likely to materialize across the rest of the state.) The Governor, a man of no fixed ideological address, gave the most rightwing speech this reporter has heard in several decades of full political immersion. Crist began steadily enough by paying tribute to his mentor, Connie Mack, and then to his favorite President, Ronald Reagan. Losing control of the vehicle, he then sped through the yellow light and professed his love for Sarah Palin, an attachment previously well disguised. He went on to pronounce himself the biggest tax cutter in history and characterize the philosophical gyroscope guiding his every move as: "less government, more freedom." He then wrapped his argument to the skeptical jury by noting, with dramatic pause, that his name in its original Greek form means, "disciple of Christ." To those of us even casually acquainted with his record, Charlie seemed to be claiming to have been born again. Again.
About the proximate question -- the Senate race -- the Governor skated around and around but came dangerously close to a patch of thin ice. He asserted that, when contemplating the Senate race, he could have done the easy and popular thing and run for re-election as Governor. If he had attempted this Nixonian trope in New York or Chicago, he might have faced a rousing chorus of "Do it! Do it! Do the easy and popular thing!" Here in gracious, Live Oak-framed Nassau County, there was only wistful silence. The problem, as many Republicans see it, is that Charlie has left himself no graceful way to back down from his ill-conceived Senate campaign. The race to succeed him as Governor is already in full swing, with the presumptive GOP candidate running competitively in the polls. The same goes for the attorney general slot, which Charlie himself once occupied under former Governor Jeb Bush. It's a challenge for Charlie, to be sure, perhaps more theatrical than structural. How does he get off stage? The hope, threadbare as it may be, is that nothing in Charlie's campaign will so become him as the leaving of it.

One thing you have to remember about Florida is the high foreclosure rates around the state. Miami is at about 28% and Pensacola is the lowest at about 9%. In the midst of that the public is looking for a revolutionary and Crist isn't it. He's a typecast Ken doll RINO for the Republican Party and the public won't buy it any cost. Even 8 million isn't enough to push a big lie like Crist over the top.
BA Cyclone| 3.16.10 @ 9:57AM
To me, the worry isn't that his big campaign pockets put him on the ballot as an R. Like the author, I think that ship has already sailed.
What Crist can potentially do with that cash, is help elect the D. Either he can do the selfish thing and attempt to take down Rubio (thus sullying his ability to effectively represent, should Rubion still win), or Crist can pull the "RINO thing" and switch to the D side and run in their lane. I am not sure if the electoral calendar allows for that in Florida...but the "ideological address" of Crist tends to lead one to believe all options are on the table. Well, all options except for the honorable one where he just bows out of the race.
CJN| 3.16.10 @ 12:35PM
Another alternative would be for Crist to take a page from the Lieberman playbook and declare himself an independent after he loses to Rubio in the Republican primary. I doubt he'd get anywhere, but with $8 million in hand he might think he could pull it off. If he did take that route, I can only hope that he wouldn't end up peeling off enough Rubio votes to allow a Democrat victory by plurality.

Did Illinois Giannoulias, Florida's Crist, California's Angelides and New York's Gianaris apply Greek budgeting techniques? Greek Ponzi fourfold Eurodefecit boasts Trojan Horse Perfidy, Klephth Brigandage. Upset that industrious Albanians invaded their lazy, gungrabbing, babykilling homeland, the sovietchurched Greeks vindictively hire, house and promote illegals. As quakes render their homes disposable, Greeks are oblivious to the very concept of maintenance. Olympia Snowjob supports Obamacare and abortion because of her gangreen patriarch: (Is Orthodox Christianity progressive? Michelle Boorstein Washington Post 11-4-09 Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew spoke about the spiritual imperative for nonviolence, universal health care and reducing consumption to help the environment.) Palamite Zealotes massacred Thessalonian aristocracy in preparation for Cantacuzene usurpation which brought about hesychast hyperventilatory hallutination. This soviet socialism motivated Anatolian farmers to embrace Turks in the 1400s to avoid redistributative taxation and then for liberated mainlanders to migrate to Smyrna in the 1800s.

"Even 8 million isn't enough to push a big lie like Crist over the top."
A big part of Crist's "big lie" is the fact that he is a closeted homosexual. I could not care less about his sexual orientation, but most Republicans will not support him when the full truth comes out.
And the truth is out there with many witnesses to attest to him being gay.
By the way, his first wife was a Lesbian who is now living with a woman. When asked about Crist's sexual orientation, she said, "Wait ten years and I will tell you the story."

Charlie Christ is wind-rider. Whichever way the political blows Charlie goes. He has no discernable principles; moral compass; or personal political philosophy. But he does have a huge dollup of loyalty. Too Charlie Christ, of course! This is a man not much interested in his so obvious shortcomings. He's not very smart (Had to take the bar multiple times); the truth is chimerical to Charlie, if he gets close that's good enough.
He's Republocrat Florida can be proud of.
JP| 3.16.10 @ 8:36AM
Govenor Crist represents all that has gone awry with our politics. His is all ego and ambition. A more balanced and measured person would graciously concede defeat, and at least put up the front of party loyalty and show some class. Some politicians built thier or rebuilt thier fortunes on gracious defeat. Even President Boy Clinton expirenced devastating defeat early in his career, but he was shrewd enough to capitalize on that defeat.
Our modern politics are so fluid that events (and fortunes) can litterally turn on a dime. A shrewed politician knows this. And a smart politician also knows about not burning one's bridges. Govenor Crist is niethr shrewd nor smart; but, he is immature. If the good govenor decides to sink Rubio, his political career is over. Even if he later decides to jump ship and cross over, he will find out how welcoming the Democrats are. He should first consult with Jim Jefford. Failing that, he could also interview Snarlin' Arlen.

All Rubio has to do is have some billboards with the picture of Crist embracing Obama put up along major state roads. No snarks and smears in the world can counteract that.

With a loss to Rubio, Crist's political caeer is over. I bet that is the worst thing he can imagine that could ever happen to him in his life - no government job. With 8 mill, I am worried that the idiot will run as a third party candidate in the general election and the democrat will win.
Northern Rebel| 3.16.10 @ 11:13AM
I have no doubt Crist will blow up the party, in a display of petulant vengeance. He is an Arlen Specter clone, and a hopeless nihilist. Nothing on the planet can come between Charlie, and himself.
I'll bet he has a bronze plaque on his tanning booth, with his name on it.
Richard Baker| 3.16.10 @ 11:21AM
Is that what Crist means by economic stimulus? I'm sure the ad and media companies here in Florida could use the revenue, while it lasts.
Al Adab| 3.16.10 @ 11:33AM
This election cycle is no longer about "who" is elected but rather is about "what" that individual stands for. Crist could become the statesman of the yeart easily were he to withdraw, donate the campaign fund to Conservatives in critical contests, and take a stand for principle over his personal goals.
Now that would be an action we could all applaud and a person who we could all admire. This is not about the perks of office, but about the very Liberty of our Citizens and the meaning of Constitutional government itself. To borrow from Webster, "hear me for my cause."

How effective will BO's Acorn brothers be at motivating "independents" to vote for Crist in the primary?
Pecozbill| 3.16.10 @ 12:15PM
When I think of all the good that Crist could do for the Party, the other candidates in his party and himself with that $8 Million (of OPM), I wonder out loud... why not?
Then common sense sets in - and I think - 'Oh never mind'. When he made that interview statement the other day about maybe Rubio spending $130 on a back wax job, he displayed the true colors of a no class, desperate candidate.
The Dims seem to self-destruct once they get in office, anymore the GOP troops seem to frag themselves before they get elected!!

Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen - Unless they are gay
Right-wing kids - How do you set up a Christian madrassah anyway?

Business Owners - But not ones that work with unions
People with their original faces - Unless they are dark faces
Hunters - If they carry assault weapons
Global Warming skeptics - Only if they also believe the world is flat and the sun revolves around the earth
People of Faith - As long as its Jesuuss!
Black conservative academicians - All 3 of them
Vaccine manufacturers - But not the NIH where all basic science for vaccines is done
The United States Constitution - Well except for those annoying parts about separation of state and religion, and habeaus corpus

Christ is a RINO. Christ has eight million dollars and is the most humiliated politician of the nation showing a nearly 75 point swing in popularity. Who is he mad at?
The thought that he will do something honorable and not try to pull down Rubio is as laughable as he is pathetic.
the friendly grizzly| 3.19.10 @ 6:18AM
Perhaps Christ IS a RINO; I am not all that well-versed in the New Testament to know. As for the $8 million, I am led to understand that Christ was a poor man.
Crist, on the other hand, is indeed a RINO.
dougx| 3.17.10 @ 1:36AM
I'm not worried about his $8M for a few reasons. He would be seriously damaging his future if he went down in flames. Before you say he has no future, there are plenty of jobs out there for ex-governors, so I don't know why he would want to make a lot of enemies. Also, if all he has on Rubio is an alleged back wax, that doesn't sound like very much dirt.

Sorry Charlie; You are the worst Republican governor since Bob Martinez....I voted for you; fool me once, shame on me, fool me twice, shame on you. Also, You tell lies very well...such as the casino deal you singlehandedly negotiated with the Indian Tribes. In the 1980's casino gambling was on the ballot at least 3 times and soundly defeated.....You told us that, "If I didn't do it the Feds would have (dept of the interior) and they would have got all that tax revenue. Never in the history of this nation has the feds demanded casino gambling within any state. bah, bye!

I think that Mr. Freeman is confusing Conservatives with Liberals. Unless there is some credible issue of an egregious offense that Rubio may have committed, I don't think that any amount of negative money will prevent his election. You can hoodwink liberals, but independents and conservatives aren't that gullible.
Mark| 3.18.10 @ 12:54PM
Just what does this say about the Republican "leadership' who put Crist where he is, much like they previously did with Specter?
Jeff| 3.18.10 @ 1:18PM
Sadly Crist is typical of many politicians of both parties these days, those who will do or say anything to be elected. Crist was a moderate Republican, until McCain started looking at him for the VP slot. Then he got married to try to stop the rumors about his sexuality and moved right on many issues. After he wasn't selected, then he tilted moderate again until Rubio flanked him on the right, making him go right again. I can name numerous others of both parties who do the same. They should start their own party, ATBE, anything to be elected. I admire a candidate more (even if I disagree with his stance) if he is true to his own principles, but with money flowing into both parties, it seems more rare than ever.
