An abiding belief in white Republican sin.
Hooray for Hollywood. Not only did a story of American military heroes win the Academy Award for Best Picture (The Hurt Locker) but Best Actress was awarded for the portrayal of a conservative Mom from Ole Miss!
Author and screenwriter Roger Simon asks if 2010 marks the end of Liberal Hollywood. Hope so — but there’s a long way to go. For example, take Sandra Bullock and Leigh Anne Tuohy. Leigh Anne is the real life heroine of The Blind Side, a true story about the adoption and nurturing of a homeless black teen by an established family in Memphis, Tennessee. Leigh Anne is the mother who makes it all happen and Sandra captured her character perfectly. Not to let it go at that, the actress seems fond of saying that Leigh Anne “scared” her. “Leigh Anne scared me from the minute she opened the door. I was sitting in a chair in her house with my little hands folded in my lap. I couldn’t say anything.” And just what frightened Sandra? Well, the Tuohys live “lives that we normally would never come in contact with.” Sandra worried about “how people use their faith in their religion as a banner and then they don’t do the right thing. It scared me because I’ve had experiences that haven’t been great. I don’t buy a lot of people who use that as their shield. …But now I have faith in those who say they represent a faith….I finally met people who walk the walk.” Keep in mind that a best-selling book had already told the story of Leigh Anne, her family and her adopted son and that this book spawned the movie and that Sandra had surely heard the story. Yet she still worried that she was about to run into some kind of phony — or maybe Tammy Bakker?
Alas, Sandra was not alone. The sins of the Tuohy family were prominently featured in every movie review. Consider:
Sandra Bullock plays Leigh Anne Tuohy, a rich, white, loud-mouthed Christian Republican…couture conservative of the South living in a privileged world…a conservative Christian Republican…gun-toting Republican Christian whirlwind of philanthropic good…rich, white Ole Miss ex-cheerleader…tough Southern cookie…rich, white fairy god-parents…mama-tiger ferocity in designer duds…[her children attend] a tony private school…[and they have a] $10,000 couch…[and they are] openly and proudly Republican.
Got that? These people are White! And Rich! And Southern! And Christian! And not just Republican but openly and proudly Republican! Have they no shame?
Well, despite the Tuohy’s grievous shortcomings, Sandra seems to like the rich, white, Christian Republicans just fine and audiences loved the movie. And even though Tinsel Town’s establishment may not be on the verge of a conversion, we’ll take what we can get. So Hooray for Hollywood. It’s a start.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut. Hollywood hasn't given up it's disdain for conservative values. Yet every time they make such a movie, it is successful (brings in money to the film makers). Some think Hollywood is only interested in making money, but if that were true, there would be far more such movies.
MattZ| 3.18.10 @ 4:50PM
If Hollywood were *only* concerned about making money, then they woukd direct all of their efforts at catering to mindless conservatives who will buy just about anything. Glenn Beck, Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter would write screenplays and the number one picture in America would be called "Obama is a Kenyan Sociallist." It would pretty much be a scene right out of Idiocracy, given how many knee-jerk talk show hosts have best sellers.

Funny how well it sells though huh? Look at conservative shows (or any other medium) ratings as opposed to liberal shows, books, radio, anything! Yep, Michael Moore has grossed what, 50 bucks on his last 25 conservative bashing, liberal looser crap "movies" he's churned out? Air America has done what? Oh yeah, vanished. MSNBC,CNN and NBC all put together can barely muster 1/3 the viewers of the likes of Beck, O'Reilly, Hannity, etc most of the time and less than half of the viewers the rest of the time? And what's the name of of that liberal talk show? Oh, there aren't any! No wonder the Dums need 'fairness doctrine' legislation passed because unless it's mandated, no one wants to hear that silly nonsense. Even then they won't! Yes we will buy just about anything thats conservative because it's what we associate with, what we believe in and what we want. Besides, what's the alternative? your stuff? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
DL| 6.21.10 @ 5:56PM
...well, not really. We libs tend to think for ourselves and don't rely on trash spewed from the screaming heads of talk radio - from either end of the political spectrum. So, while you "buy it" and buy into it, we don't. So Sandra Bullock discovered there are sincere, conservative Christians. Wow. Too bad she's had to deal with the other kind.
milo| 3.22.10 @ 9:02PM
MattZ, I would pay to see the movie "Obama Is A Kenyan Socialist". I'll bet George Soros would produce it and Michael Moore would direct it. They could use Gibbons "The Rise and Fall of The Roman Empire" to adapt the screenplay.
GFR| 3.23.10 @ 1:55AM
That is an EXCELLENT idea MattZ - I think you are on to something. All of the people you mentioned can write better than the hacks that pass for "screenwriters" in Hollywood these days.
Unfortunately hollywood really doesn't care about making movies that sell well - there were at least 6 anti-war movies that went straight to video before: "The Hurt Locker" came along.
The other problem is that when Conservative fil-makers make movies about politicians the Federal Election Commission bans them from being shown.
The obvious solution is for the Conservatives to make movies and distribute them over the internet - that is how Beck, Coulter and Malkin became famous. The "drive by" media did everything they could to hide their talent - and their subject matter.

Perfect example of how individuals, not political parties make a difference.
The Democratic Party has destroyed the black race by turning a majority of them into hapless government serfs, reaching out for their free cheese, and dooming many black males to a life of orange suited fashion models.
Now that would make a great Hollywood movie.

edward| 3.15.10 @ 7:53AM
I love Sandra Bullock, but she's from Northern Virginia, which is full of DC bureaucrats and liberals and isn't very southern at all. We tend to speak of "the real Virginia" and "Northern Virginia" as being two very separate entities. She was also heavily influenced by the European ideas of her German mother and lived in Nuremberg until she was 12. That being said, Ms Bullock doesn't make a practice of discussing her political and religious beliefs and I admire her for that.
She didn't attend UNC-Chapel Hill, either; she was a student at East Carolina in Greenville, NC.
Jim Kearney| 3.15.10 @ 8:27AM
As a New Yorker who has PLENTY liberal friends, I've heard the most ignorant bigoted comments against Christians, and (rednecks). They're so enlightened, they don't realize they're bigoted, but I always talk about the beautiful Christians who gave from their pockets, hearts, and body sweat, to help those in Ole Miss, and New Orleans after Katrina. CHRISTIANS were the backbone of every relief effort. I worked with Pat Robertson's group, Operation Blessing at a free medical clinic, and even brought one of my Liberal New Yawk Jewish friends with me to do massage at the clinic. She was also shocked at how, well, Christian they were. How nice, loving, and non judgmental they were. And how dedicated they were as a result of FAITH. They also LIVED their Faith and never tried to convert anyone. They just served.
And I want to give kudos to Sandra Bullock for quietly giving 1 million donation to the Red Cross after 9/11. I've heard nice things about her being down to earth, and genuinely sweet to people. Most of my liberal friends have never really met a Christian. They only see the caricatures that TV and movies portray. And truth be told, not all Christians act Christian, and Jesus had some things to say about that. But REAL Christians, are the salt of the earth. Thank God for them.

I'm quite happy with the fact that the military is unevenly represented by my friends in the South. These would by my same friends who know how to win wars, and who have created one of the world's largest economies today.

Mike, "welcome" is ambiguous. I meant that they were welcome for my service, not that they were welcome to join the Armed Services. Mercedes in Alabama and BMW in South Carolina, and Toyota in Tennessee did not need any federal hand out. I love the South!

Another example of the strong economy in the South: I find myself "in between jobs" right now, as I live in the socialist republic of Michigan. I was pulling for Sandra Bullock on Oscar night, but held out little hope that the Hollywood voters would honor her efforts in bringing such a pro-southern-religious-conservative story to the screen (I think she was also a producer).
The Blind Side disproves many benighted and bigoted liberal notions. I was stunned when her name was called. Good for her.
You are correct in pointing out that Sandra Bullock was not brought up in the south, and her mother was not southern. Her father, however, is very much a southern gentleman, in the tradition that includes honor, generosity, work ethic, education, and a thoughtful world view, all of which sort of reminds me of Sandra Bullock.
On the night of the Academy Awards ceremony, I was told, Mr. Bullock and some friends and family gathered at The Bright Star, a 100-year-old restaurant in Bessemer, Alabama, to watch the ceremony and, as it turned out, to celebrate. You can't get much more southern than that.
I'm not sure whether he was brought up in Alabama, but I know he's always had family here.
Trolleyfish| 3.15.10 @ 9:29PM
An award disproves nothing. It only means that more members of a very limited group selected her than any other nominee. Don't act like it's a vindication.

I don't see any of you complaining when Hollywood comes to film in Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, or Alabama. I worked on a film in Alabama a few years ago, Heaven's Fall, and I ran in to people who, for example, when a courthouse scene was filmed and a picture of Lincoln was removed because of glare/light problems, after the filming a woman asked if we could not put that picture back up because that Lincoln was such a terrible man. Most of the people weren't interested in voting for anyone that could help their economic well-being, they were more interested that gay people couldn't get married anywhere.
I will recommend that Hollywood stay in California so that the money and jobs will stay here instead of travelling to the south where it's so obviously not appreciated.
Oldefarte, there are just as many good movies being made today as there were bad ones made in yesteryear. It's only that people remember the good ones over time, they forget about the 200 each year no one wants to see again. What you reap, you sow, or what you look for, you find in other words.
And the sterotype that everyone in Hollywood is white and liberal is as bad as the steroetypes you think people have of the south. This is the community that wouldn't honor Brokeback Mountain with a Best Picture award and the city that voted to pass Proposition 8.
Maybe you wouldn't perceive everyone as persecuting white-southern-religious-Christians if you'd get a sense of humor and get over some of your sense of superiority. If Jesus came back to visit you I think he'd need more than Job's patience sometimes. If you want a glimpse of this notion, why don't you see the story of Jesus as told in the play Corpus Christi. Then see if your notions of Christian tolerance live up to your ideals.
The point is: I've loved the things I've experienced with Southern culture and the people I've known. By dissing everyone in Hollywood you are doing the same thing that you are despising others for doing to you. Wait, where've I heard that before? "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Is that it. Another old truism, practice what you preach.

Maybe they gave this movie an award just to appease those who have talked about the leftist mind set in Hollywood. Whatever, it is satisfying to see our military in a different light with no understory ruining the moment in this movie. I'm a Southerner as well and veteran. I have traveled the US and have always tried to connect with the locals no matter where I'm at. These stereotypes about us being cabin dwelling hillbillies here in Tennessee are as disgusting as the surfer dude image of the Californian guys. We need to get over it. God Bless our troops and giving them the boost they deserve so well. Just wish some of the movies made in the south had won more awards too.

Trolleyfish, you're right. The award was just surprising. But you misunderstand. My point is that the movie, The Blind Side, contradicts some of Hollywood's unfortunate boilerplate notions about Southerners. Also, no one questions that Hollywood is in it for the money. Of course they are. But they are also in it for the influence they hope to have on opinions. Note please the constant drumbeat of Hollywood on global warming and evil corporations, especially in films for children.
Martins Pal, we aren't complaining.
Southerners, as a rule, appreciate and attend films made in the south. I'm confident enough in the hearts of my fellow southerners to trust that you and your film company were treated well during your visits to the south.
It isn't "dissing everyone in Hollywood" to recognize that Hollywood has persistently stereotyped southerners long past the time when shameful stereotypes of Native Americans, Blacks and Jews, and others were left behind. We don't call that persecution. We call it stupidity. And a cheap shot. Southerners forgive Hollywood over and over and welcome film companies to our states.
Regarding the woman who called Lincoln a "terrible person," I can only apologize. We do have our racists and homophobes and some odd eccentric lunatics. But no more than any other area of the country. It's just that folks come here looking for those types, keep looking till they find them, so they're rarely disappointed.
I've lived in Alabama for virtually all of my sixty-one years, and I've never heard Lincoln called a "terrible person." In fact, my white country Baptist grandmother, born in 1898, loved Lincoln above all other historic figures, treasured her volumes of Carl Sandburg's biography and read it many times. She was also crazy about FDR, disliked Huntley and Brinkley and loved Matt Dillon. And she was a stalwart proponent of organic gardening. Believe me. I could not make this up.
We, like individuals everywhere, are complex, unique human beings.
Yes. Let's all do unto others as we'd have them do unto us.

Remember what Senator Helms once said about Chapel Hill. The State built a big zoo in Asheboro, NC and regarding the effort he said, "Why are they building that zoo out in Asheboro. They could just put a fence around Chapel Hill." My wife is an '83 UNC grad and she agrees.

I hated the movie and chose to only endure a half hour of its liberal propaganda: all white people are wealthy/all black people are poor (boo hoo), shame on white people for not visiting the ghetto (why would they?); white people save blacks again... Why didn't they have a story with some wealthy black family picking up the kid and showing him not all black folk live in the ghetto and many rise above the projects?

Karen | 3.18.10 @ 3:27PM
WOW! That's what I thought when I read your comment. I can never get used to disingenuous remarks like yours. Your comment serves no one. Why don’t you try thinking, instead of reacting? No, the poster is correct. Blacks have been used and there never was a concern for their welfare. Starting in the early 1900’s the Democratic Party has been the vehicle to remove freedoms and lead this country down the road to absolute control. We all had more freedom before Franklin D. Roosevelt. Nothing is ever free. The govt. knows that. Politicians know that. Why don’t you?

Martin's Pal we don't mind the money, it's the garbage you HollyWeird freaks spin into gold that many people accross the country are sick of. Some of the movies are wonderful. Much of it is pure crap pandered to the lowest common denominator of intelligence.
I think the steriotype is less "white and liberal", and more elitist, sanctimonious, snobs, living in the little bubble you have created for yourself in the worlds most disfunctional community, and preaching your own brand of immorality to a population which, if you ever knew anything about, you have long forgotten.
Having said that, I still enjoy a good movie now and then.

Really, every review?
None of those phrases in the one from Claudia Puig in USA Today.
Not on philly.com
Not in the Boston Globe.
I went to RottenTomatoes.com where you can find a plethora of reviews and when I find the first 3 I look at not to have any of what the authour claims, I lose interest. Either Manon MacKinnon just made this up to fit a preconceived notion or she just figured something like this would go down well with the rubes, but I'm afraid she needs to get into another line of work.

You don't know me, so stop being so ignorant. Aren't you doing the same thing that the author of this article has accused Hollywood of doing? Hollywood makes 3-400 movies a year not to mention countless hours of television--you can find whatever sentiments you want in any and all of it. You can do the same with politics and religion, literature, music and art.
All you are doing is generalizing.
Do you need a hug or something?

"All you are doing is generalizing. "
hmmm >>>
"I don't see any of you complaining when Hollywood comes to film in Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, or Alabama." (what "any of you" are you referring to?)
"Most of the people weren't interested in voting for anyone that could help their economic well-being, they were more interested that gay people couldn't get married anywhere." (again which "Most of the people" did you talk to ?? I'm sure you met us all when you were here that time....I just can't remember you telling you that...surely I did)
And the sterotype that everyone in Hollywood is white and liberal is as bad as the steroetypes you think people have of the south. (You were addressing Oldfarte, but he didn't mention stereotypes. Perhaps it was "all of us" you intended ??? )
This is the community that wouldn't honor Brokeback Mountain (As you well know we'all think collectively, but I didn't get the memo on that one. Thanks so much for keeping me updated.")
Maybe you wouldn't perceive everyone as persecuting white-southern-religious-Christians (sorry I just didn't see the part where Oldfarte mentioned persecution, or was it we'uns again ((it's so hard to keep up )))
Another old truism, practice what you preach. (Who's preaching, Oldefarte? oh, "all of us" again. Silly me)
"when a courthouse scene was filmed and a picture of Lincoln was removed because of glare/light problems, after the filming a woman asked if we could not put that picture back up because that Lincoln was such a terrible man. (A southerner doesn't like Lincoln, so we all don't? poop... now I have to re-think my position on that one too... ohhh groupthink is such a handfull. You never know who has changed your mind LOL)
Now what was the subject, again? Oh, right >>

Grasshopper, the "all of you" I was referring to were the people who posted on this article before I wrote. It was the intent of the article and also what many posters were agreeing with...that Hollywood was generalizing (and therefore demenaing) white southerners and then people who commented were generalizing all of Hollywood. The examples I mentioned were to show that, yes, some people have the opinions you think Hollywood likes to stereotype, the same way some Hollywood people are what you portrayed in your post. I was not generalizing everyone in the south and if you think so then you either, just want to confirm your personal opinion, or you misread it. If you read the last thing I originally posted:
"The point is: I've loved the things I've experienced with Southern culture and the people I've known. By dissing everyone in Hollywood you are doing the same thing that you are despising others for doing to you."
The fact that you inferred my comments to mean all people in the south is incorrect. I was referring to all the people who were commenting on this article and agreeing with it so emphatically. The comment to Oldefarte was just one paragraph about his stereotyping of current films. Why you connected it to mean everything I wrote after that, only you can say.
As for my statement that "Most of the people weren't interested in voting for anyone that could help their economic well-being, they were more interested that gay people couldn't get married anywhere," well, the election analysis for 2004 certainly bears that out in Alabama.
The tone of the article we are commenting on is that Hollywood stereotypes the south. The author cites anonymous reviews that support that notion, but as others have pointed out by actually reading reviews, this is not really the case. I am of the opinion that you can find OFFENSE almost anywhere you want to. It's easy to be offended and Lord knows there's a lot of it to find. But why spend the time on a useless emotion like being offended?
I have relatives in Texas and Virginia, friends in West Virginia, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Florida and Mississippi. I don't think more or less of any of them than I do of any of you posting comments here.
Jim Cap| 3.19.10 @ 8:44PM
Nah, I don't think so.
Hollywood is made up of a lot of highly intelligent, well read, well informed types.
They know that most conservatives are dumbshits with anti-American ideas. I suggest you get used to be disrespected by most people, unless they're selfish or stupid.

MKV to iPad is the best solution to sharing MKV files on iPad. As we know, the newly developed iPad can only surport MP4 format, so if you want to play MKV video on iPad, you have to convert MKV to iPad with an additional software. My personal recommendation is to use this MKV to iPad Converter. The biggest difference between this all-in-one MKV to iPad and other similar ones is that it can not onvert general video format to iPad, but can also convert HD video to iPad for sharing high-defination video everywhere mobile movie theater.
