The Disappearing Science of Global Warming
The only currently reliable temperature record is the one produced by U.S. weather satellites.
Establishment figures intone about the substantial “body of science” supporting the notion of man-caused global warming. But based on recent events, they need to check the body’s pulse. The body is dead, and rapidly wasting away before our very eyes.
Over the past 3 months, a circus of scandals has played around the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and its periodic Assessment Reports on global warming. The latest report issued in 2007 proclaimed a consensus regarding a 90% probability that mankind’s activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels, were causing global warming that would lead to catastrophic results if drastic steps were not taken to reverse it.
The lasting scientific upshot of that circus of scandals is that the historical global surface temperature record on which the contention of global warming has been based has been thoroughly discredited as manipulated and mangled beyond recovery.
Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics
Three official global surface temperature data sets exist. These include British data (Hadley-CRU) maintained by the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia, and the Hadley Center for Climate Change of the British Meteorological Office (Met Office). Another is maintained by the National Climatic Data Center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the U.S. The third is maintained by NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Studies (NASA-GISS).
Last October, Hadley-CRU admitted in response to Freedom of Information requests that they had actually thrown away the raw temperature data from which they constructed their historical surface temperature record. The original Climategate scandal revelations included emails from CRU Director Phil Jones proclaiming to co-conspirators that he will delete the raw data files before publicly disclosing them under Freedom of Information legal requirements. But if global warming science was so sound and supported by the evidence, why would Jones not want to publicly disclose the evidence to allow full peer review under the scientific method, and prove the case?
A later revelation from the Russian Institute of Economic Analysis (IEA) explains why. The IEA disclosed that Hadley-CRU had failed to record reports from weather stations in colder regions of Russia, leaving the false impression that those stations were no longer reporting. The IEA believes that the complete Russian data do not support the notion of man-caused global warming. Other revelations disclose the same sort of shenanigans throughout the Hadley-CRU data set.
In any event, without the raw data available for peer review by other scientists to check and replicate the underlying calculations, and examine them for consistency with the publicly reported results, the Hadley-CRU surface temperature record is not science. It provides no foundation for government regulations imposing trillions in additional costs, and foreclosing trillions more in future economic output, nor any basis for the demanded trillions in wealth transfers from developed to underdeveloped countries. You can file it on the library shelf between Alice in Wonderland and Grimm’s Fairy Tales.
More recently have come scandalous revelations regarding the same problems with the U.S. data sets kept by NOAA and NASA-GISS. In the 1970s, when it was just honestly trying to report the science, NOAA collected the temperature data from 600 Canadian weather stations. But this number has dwindled over the years to just 35 today for the entire expanse of Canada, including just one above the Arctic Circle. Yet, the Canadian government now operates 1,400 surface weather stations across the country, with more than 100 above the Arctic Circle. The same problems have now been found in the NASA-GISS surface temperature record.
American researchers Joseph D’Aleo and E. Michael Smith published a study on the website of the Science and Public Policy Institute (SPPI) disclosing these results based on a review of the reports of NOAA and NASA-GISS themselves regarding the collection of data for their surface temperature records. According to a write-up in the National Post:
Mr. D’Aleo and Mr. Smith say NOAA and [NASA-GISS] have not only reduced the total number of Canadian weather stations in the database, but have “cherry-picked” the ones that remain by choosing sites in relatively warmer places, including more southerly locations, or sites closer to airports, cities or the sea — which has a warming effect on winter weather.
D’Aleo and Smith further report that over the past two decades the percentage of Canadian stations in the lower elevations included in the temperature records of the two agencies tripled, while those at higher elevations above 300 feet, where the temperatures are colder, were cut in half. The National Post story continues:
Using the agency’s own figures, Smith shows that in 1991, almost a quarter of NOAA’s Canadian temperature data came from stations in the high Arctic. The same region contributes only 3% of the Canadian data today. Mr. D’Aleo and Mr. Smith say NOAA and GISS also ignore data from numerous weather stations in other parts of the world, including Russia, the U.S., and China….The result, they say, is a warmer-than-truthful global temperature record. “NOAA… systematically eliminated 75% of the world’s stations with a clear bias towards removing higher latitude, high altitude and rural locations, all of which have a tendency to be cooler,” the authors say. “The thermometers, in a sense, marched towards the tropics, the sea, and to airport tarmacs.”
NASA GISS is run by the unbalanced James Hansen, who, as Patrick Michaels recently explained in National Review Online, “became famous for calling coal [shipments] to your local power plant ‘death trains’ and advocating war-crime trials for the executives who daily force you to put gasoline in your car.” Hansen also testified in defense of saboteurs on trial for vandalism at power plant construction sites in Britain, saying their violence was justified by the contribution to global warming that the power plants would produce. He can certainly be relied upon as an objective data source.

In my opinion the worst, very worst, form of punishment is for a soul to loose credibility. Have you noticed that Al Gore has taken to play the new role of "The Incredibly Disappearing Man?" His voice has been muted. True science has started to prevail. In the future, instead of million-dollar payed speaking engagements, Al Gore will be seen in carnival tents next to the freak show.
Gogoblue, I too live in Michigan. Gore did not help, but our troubles are not entirely his fault. When Gov. Granholm takes that final curtain call, in November, maybe we will see the morning light on the horizon signaling an end to our night of darkness.

Although the Bible does tell us that God will judge these people like Algore; I find it very difficult to just let it go at that. First, I do agree that the disgrace is a form of punishment; but these people have no shame. The usual behavior of these criminals, as exemplified by Algore and the rest of the left-wing establishment; is complete self satisfaction with what they have done. These people have committed more than just crimes of economic theft and fraud. They have caused sickness and death on a grand scale.
A big part of this whole movement started with Rachal Carson and her unscientific book 'Silent Spring' that also made up its science. The resulting ban of DDT in tropical climates has resulted in deaths estimated in the 100 MILLION range! (Mostly from malaria) This is more than losing jobs.
These people, from Gore to Michael Mann (Of the formerly well regarded Penn State Meteorology Dept that is now a laughingstock!) to Phil Jones need to made examples. Execution is frankly not unreasonable. Now, our 'Affirmative Action President' and his unindicted co-conspirators in Congress, Nancy Pilosi and Harry Reid should also be arrested because they have seen the refutation of the global warming scam and are still pushing forward with their power grabs on healthcare and cap and trade. The 'messiah' even went ahead and established his new financial sink hole 'Climate Studies Office"; and had to do it via telephone conference because of a blizzard in Washington! These people are not stupid; they're evil power hungry clones of the scourge of the Earth that destroyed Europe in the 30's and 40's; and the the Soviet Union in the 50's, 60's, and 70's before President Reagan stopped them dead. Now, we've let them into our halls of power and they are busily destroying us and our Country. If you like the healthcare arrogance; you haven't seen 'nuthin' yet! Good points. I know from my own research on DDT that the scaremongers on the left overinflated the "science" behind their claims, and, yes, MILLIONS of people died from malaria, mostly in Africa. It is a crime against humanity that these people are continually allowed to push their propaganda. Just look at the what the destrustive leftist environmentalists have done to the nuclear power and energy situation in this country. They all need to be indicted and their enablers in Congress as well. Period.

In complete agreement; environmentalism is true cult of death. For example, they said DDT is not biodegradable (once in nature it will last forever), and will kill fishes and birds. After 30 years of research it was found:
1) DDT is 100% biodegradable; and
2) it has never hurt a single fish or bird.
But it is still under UN-interdiction.
Similar cases are those with long-fiber asbestos imported from Canada (almost exclusively found in US with zero lung cancers), CFC coolant (no influence on stratospheric ozone), radiation danger from nuclear power plants (zero sick, zero dead, not a single fly hurt in over 50 years of operation), etc., etc.

We installed a 7 Kw photovoltaic array on our farm 3 years ago and it works great. Zero electric bill, the system powers our house plus 6,000 square feet of out buildings, and no coal, oil, gas, or anything else needs to be burned on our behalf. And within 2 years we hope to have an electric car. Yes, we still have to use diesel fuel for our tractors, but within the next 5 to 7 years I believe we will see electric tractors. We have harmed the environment with our obscene use of carbon based fuels - - - what would be wrong with using our inventive brains and start doing thing both better & cheaper. What do you think Jesus would say?

They also have nothing to offer on their own part, just more attacks on the existing science. But that's not how science works. Where are the opposing FACTS? Where's the DATA that shows the current findings are wrong? There isn't any. There's only partisan anger and personal attacks, over and over.
Here's a fact, gang: You can't topple current science without BETTER science. And the GW deniers don't have any.

Well, for one thing, check out the Phil Jones interview with the BBC last weekend. He admitted that the warming during the periods 1870-1880 and 1910-1940 were no different than the recent warming period 1970-1995. That is, the recent warming (1970-2000) was not unprecedented (based on his HadCrut temperature analysis). That is, the IPCC (and the Hadley Center) mislead the public in thier AR4 reports. He also admitted that the MWP was warmer (at least it was for Europe) than today; however, paleo-climate information cannot verify if this warming was a global event (something statistician Dr Wegman said in his 2006 congressional testimony). This of course goes flat against what the "settled science" group states (of which Phil Jones was formerly thier leader).
Much has been written and said about the statistical study dubbed the "Hockey Stick", which was written by Dr Mann (Penn St). The mathematical errors (the use of Principal Components Analysis for one), the divergence problem, the failure of both red and white noise tests, the reliance on 2 proxies (the Foxtail Bristlecone, and the Yamal Pines) for 100% of the recent warming, etc... have virtually destroyed the Hockey Stick as evidence of AGW. And to make matters worse, it was the work of a retired mining engineer and mathematician to uncover Mann's sloppiness, slip shod processes, and critical errors. The "settled science" bunch fell for it and then defended Mann by attacking those people who uncovered his mistakes.
I could go on and highlight the long standing debate concerning the Urban Heat Island effect and its corruption of the surface temperature record (Dr Christy of NASA this week published a long study of this problem), the now daily reports of the IPCC using WWF "studies" (which cannot be audited, as most of these studies were not studies at all) to claim everything from the Himalayian gl acier melt, worldwide drought, rain forest disappearence due to AGW, etc...
We could spend an entire month doing the job of the MSM and highlight the scientific errors of AGW.

Do you really believe what you write? That's what this is all about the data that serves as the foundation of the "science" of which you apparently ascribe has been proven over and over again to be founded on manipulation and falsehood. Every allegation of falsehood is backed by a factual example. NOAA deliberately and with malice aforethought eliminated weather stations that were showing no temperature trend increase or a temperature trend decrease. This is a fact not a wild-eyed accusation. People reviewed the data from which NOAA compiled their published result and arrived at the conclusion based on the data presented.
NASA-GISS Hansen has been caught fabricating his "data" on several different occasions, once again fact not unfounded accusation. The fact being established after reviewing the data wrested away from Hansen against his will and reviewed by outsiders. Do you have any idea how much money that we have spent launching satellites into orbit to monitor global temperature only to have the data discarded because it didn't agree with what the pundits masquerading as scientists had already decided was the party line?
Have you actually read the information being revealed in regards to the anti-warmist researchers? Have you bothered? It seems to me that your mind is made up and you don't want or need any more information.
Seriously, if the warmist position were the correct position then why isn't their base data a matter of public record? Copyleft fails to understand how the scientific method actually works. Once a theory is debunked, as has the theory of man made global warming, those scientists who postulated the theory need to go away and come up with something more robust.
Skepticism is the birthright of all scientists and its the job of every scientist to debunk new claims that clearly have no credibility. Professor Phil Jones of the UK's Climatic Research Unit was found by the British Government's Information Commissioner's Office to have unlawfully destroyed climate data. Jones now admits there has been no statistically significant global warming since 1995.
Thus if there has been no warming despite exponential rises in the levels of carbon dioxide, then there is no correlation between the global temps and CO2. Without correlation there can be no causation and thus the theory is refuted. QED.

You also have no conception of how science works. One comes up with a hypothesis and then conducts research to prove/disprove the hypothesis. Then you publish the paper and all the other scientists review it and test it anew. In your terms they "attack" it. They may come up with a competing hypothesis but it is not necessary. If they disprove your theory then it is toast whether they have a hypothesis or not. Besides our side does have its own hypothesis. Which is: Your "scientists" cooked the books and lied, and you have neither proven the Earth is warming nor man is causing it if it is.
Also, what on Earth are you blathering about in regards to where are the opposing facts! The opposing facts are these: 1. In about seven scandals as outlined in the original article your "scientists have been caught lying and "fixing" the data (people who have science and fact on their side don't do that). 2. The Earth's climate has been changing for a few billion years. In fact, there have been multiple Ice Age events with warm periods in between. There are theories about what causes this, but no one knows for sure. What is known is that all this was happening way before man and his machines arrived on the scene. If you really have an objective view and wish to learn more there are literally many books filled with opposing data.

Say that this emergency requires maximum effort to counteract, so you will be buying up scrap limestone and heating it in a coal furnace till it breaks down and gives back all its valuable CO2.

What has always amazed me, as the AGW acolytes and the skeptics go at it, with the back and forth over recent data, is the simple fact that we all know that for the 6+ billion years the Earth has been in existence, Earth's climate has undergone huge changes.
I had a book as a child (I'm pushing 60) that depicted the Earth's various epochs, 150-300 million years ago, in which the North American continent has been either covered under a mile of ice, or, was mostly a shallow inland sea, that resembled a gigantic swamp.
Pardon my simplicity, but the principle of Occam's Razor seems to be shouting here but few are listening. If all this did occur, then ipso facto, AGW is a non-existent farce.

Don't get your hopes up. Darwinism will survive just fine, with some major adjustment to the assumptions about "pure" random variation. Organisms have actually learned meta-rules for guided mutation, and in the very earliest days learned to merge whole chunks of their DNA and life-cycles. E.g.: larval forms of arthropods may well be from entirely different species originally, that were stolen or borrowed.

It is not as if there aren't real problems in the world, including millions dying of maleria, malnutrition, lack of adequate sanitation and clean water. These problems are neither theoretical, nor remote. Too bad for many, working to address these problems isn't nearly as fashionable as conjuring up "climate change" with messaged data, overwrought rehetoric, and, of course, expensive intrusive government control.
Even if one presumes that the globe is warming and such warming is the result of man's activities, it seems incumbent upon those who believe it is a problem to have a rational discussion as to the costs of abatement v. the costs of adaptation. As importantly, what are the benefits of abatement measures compared to similar investments in other initiatives, e.g. micronutrient supplements for 3rd world countris.
It doesn't seem, however, that we can get there, since for many, global warming is secular religion, with secular hucksters such as Al Gore well on their way to fleecing the secular flock.

While P.T. Barnum is often credited with saying, “There’s a sucker born every minute,” this statement was actually made by one of his competitors, David Hannum. Barnum got the best of Hannum who purchased one-third interest in the Cardiff Giant, a supposed descendent of the giants mentioned in Genesis 6. Believing the enormous gypsum carving to be the authentic fossilized remains of the creatures spoken of in Scripture, Hannum subsequently put it on display in Syracuse, New York.
Seeing an opportunity to cash in himself, Barnum introduced his own fake exhibit mimicking Hannum’s phony giant. He then proceeded to advertise his counterfeit as the real thing while claiming that his competitor’s exhibit was the fraud. When Hannum heard of Barnum’s deceit, he was overhead saying, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” However, the quote was somehow attributed to Barnum instead.
This anecdote illustrates the power of delusion. If people want to believe something bad enough no amount of chicanery or deception will prevent them from accepting at face value the claims of those tickling their ears with what they want to hear. So it is with global warming dementia.

Greenpeace echoed the view, saying mainland scientists had also concluded that the extreme cold weather in China was triggered by climate change. "This does not only cause an increase in global warming but also causes extreme weather patterns," said campaigner Edward Chan.
My, my…isn’t that convenient? It’s hard to refute rock solid evidence like that.

Here are a few of the things climate change is responsible for according to various global warming experts: bubonic plague, camel deaths, deformed railroad tracks, school closures, better beer, childhood insomnia, depression, early marriages, taller mountains, war, collapsing gingerbread houses, killer cornflakes, struggling brothels, threat to global equality, and a looming fashion disaster.
What’s this world coming to if we can now be done in by our cereal? How can any of us sleep at night knowing that our pet camel is unlikely to survive the impending global warming threat or that we might all be wiped out by bubonic plague before the year is over because our government balked at accepting the Kyoto Protocol? Plus, there ain’t no way I’m getting on a train with the threat of deformed railroad tracks out there waiting to send me to my doom. Maybe we should all crack open a can of the better beer produced by global warming and drown our sorrows while we wait for our inevitable demise at the hands of the next out-of-control CO2 emissions catastrophe.
The real silliness of this global warming madness is revealed when we read so-called scientific reports that make claims that are completely absurd. For example, according to the weather wizards pushing this nonsense, climate change is the culprit behind the following contradictory occurrences: harvest increase and harvest shrinkage, less colorful trees and more colourful trees, ice sheet growth and ice sheet shrinkage, more hurricanes and fewer hurricanes, Atlantic less salty and Atlantic more salty, avalanches reduced and avalanches increased, bananas destroyed and bananas grow, cloud increase and cloud stripping, coral reef growth and coral reef depletion.
Personally, I’m still trying to figure out how global warming can simultaneously make the Atlantic Ocean more and less salty. No doubt news like this gives great comfort to farmers knowing that whether their harvest produces a yield that is meager or a bumper crop they have the option to thank or curse the global warming gods for their plight. That people actually believe tripe like this is a testament to the success of attempts by progressives to dumb down America by failing to teach cognitive thinking skills to our young people.

"Though snow fell in North Dakota this week, we have a breaking update on global warming from Daily Tech: "A study from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland looking at climate data over the past century has concluded that solar variation has made a significant impact on the Earth's climate. The report concludes that evidence for climate changes based on solar radiation can be traced back as far as the Industrial Revolution."
Now, we understand that the idea that the sun could be affecting the earth's climate might be hard to believe, but the evidence is persuasive. Thomas Woods, solar scientist at the University of Colorado in Boulder says, "The fluctuations in the solar cycle impacts Earth's global temperature by about 0.1 degree Celsius, slightly hotter during solar maximum and cooler during solar minimum. The sun is currently at its minimum, and the next solar maximum is expected in 2012." We were relieved that the NASA report went back to blaming humans for warming in spite of their own evidence to the contrary. After all, we can only tolerate so many inconvenient truths on the subject.
Any more discoveries like this and the alarmists will really be alarmed. The climate change Chicken Littles have spent years cultivating their message and now all their hard work could be derailed by something their side has lacked from the beginning - real scientific evidence. Not only that, but a number of their shills in the mainstream media are starting to get suspicious and some have actually resorted to treachery by leaking findings such as these to the public.
Gone are the halcyon days when the mere mention of global warming brought instant credibility and insured the allegiance of hordes of brain-dead liberals and an obedient press. The little theory that could appears to be losing some of its momentum.
Don’t count the purveyors of worldwide warming out just yet, however. The pseudo-scientists at Climate Control Central will no doubt uncover “hard” evidence to prove that climate change is the real driving force behind these anomalies detected in sun spot activity. It is only a matter of time before these findings appear in print with the universal endorsement of loyal climate change experts everywhere.

Friedman has been saying for years that we need to reduce our CO2 emmissions, we must sarcrifice, conserve, and suffer by not burning fossil fuels... that we can't be driving and flying around anymore -- even if global warming is not true!

Haven't heard from Dr. Hansen in a while. Maybe because he was recently overheard at a science conference saying that the government should get out of the way a let the private sector address the alternate energy issues. Still believes in mam-made climate change, but the solution isn't more government.
He accused the Bush administration of putting a muzzle on him (though he was interviewed hundreds of times), but it seems that Obama's group is really clamping down on him. See, he's not a fan of cap-and-trade and subsidizing old energy technologies of limited viability (ethanol, solar panels and windmills).

Everyone also knows that there was no global warming from about 1940 to about 1975. That means that over the last 70 years, 50 of those years have seen no global warming (natural or man-made). Over those same 70 years, CO2 was continually increasing. (About 30% by most accounts). Just think, over the last seven decades, there's been no global warming 70% of the time even though atmospheric CO2 has steadily gone up by at least 90 parts per million over that period. Seems like Al Gore was right, the debate is over and the science is settled. Man-made global warming is a fantasy. Cap and trade would be a giant new tax serving absolutely no useful purpose. For all those who believe that we can do something about "climate change," glo-bull warming," or any other such nonsense, I offer the following.
Is it not possible (whether you believe in G*d or not) that the changes the Earth goes through are CYCLICAL? Is it not also reasonable to assume that, since human history is but a blink in the history of our planet, again, leaving G*d out of it, these cycles happen FOR A REASON? To fool with them would be folly? Is no one posing THAT question? There have been NUMEROUS articles that have bemoaned various aspects of "green living" as more harmful to the enviornment than "conventional" lifestyles.
I, myself, believe in G*d. I believe that G*d has a reason for doing the things that he does in our natural world. Some of those things are beyond our reason to question. However, if you were to substitute "nature" for G*d, would not the same questions apply? G*d fearing or not, who is MAN to imply that he can do things in better fashion than nature itself?
Global warming/claimate change hocum is, & HAS been for years, one of the last bastions of communism to pervade our culture since the 70's. By regulating "climate," just as with healthcare, leftist power sluts know that this is one of THE key ways to legislate & controll almost every aspect of human life. Especially when one considers that a compound (CO2) that is the most naturally occurring in the atomosphere...has been labeled 'hazerdous to humans. And never mind the fact that almost ALL living things exhale CO2 (what better revenuing scheme than to declare an ESSENTIAL atomospheric compound, CO2, as "hazerdous to one's health."). Other creatures need the abundant CO2 in the atomosphere, thus the "circle of life (G*d, I hate that expression, but its the best I've got) continues.

The fact that increased CO2 in the atmosphere leads to warming isn't really debatable...
you can measure it in the laboratory. CO2 and other greenhouse gases are good at absorbing
infrared radiation (heat) and then re-radiating it in all directions. They act like a
blanket around the earth and without it the Earth would be a frozen snowball. But just
like adding a second comforter to your bed makes you warmer, adding CO2 to the atmosphere
heats up the Earth. And we know where the extra CO2 comes from. Every year, we dig up
gigatons of fossil fuels and burn them, releasing CO2. So far, we have increased CO2 levels
in the atmosphere by about 38% (from a pre-industrial 280 "parts per million" to 387 ppm
today) and we will likely double it this century. CO2 levels haven't been as high as they
are today for at least 15 million years. And the CO2 doesn't go away quickly. Some of it
stays in the atmosphere for hundreds and even thousands of years.

Do you know what those "other greenhouse gases" are? The most abundant is water vapor (humidity) in the air. It comprises between 1-4% of the Earth's atmosphere.
Do you know how much heat water is able to absorb? Look up the terms Latent Heat, Sensible Heat, and Enthalpy.
Also, do you know how much a Part Per Million is? 380 ppm translates to 0.038% of the atmosphere. That is THIRTY EIGHT THOUSANDTHS OF ONE PERCENT! CO2 is a trace gas.
Actually, CO2 levels have risen from 150-200 ppm to 380 ppm (depending on whose ice core data you believe.) That means CO2 levels have already doubled.
CO2 levels would have to increase 10,000% to reach the level of water vapor in the atmosphere.
Are you still afraid of rising CO2 levels, Jason?
CO2 doesn't warm the atmosphere. The sun does. Period.
Want proof?
If you live in the northern latitudes, just walk outside. You will recall from science class, as the Earth rotates around the sun, during winter the northern hemisphere is angled away from the sun. Which means less direct sunlight hits the ground, causing temperatures to drop.
In summer more direct sunlight hits the ground, causing temps to rise. The oceans are the globe's air conditioner, absorbing massive amounts of heat, and moving them to colder areas.

I don't know how you came to that conclusion. I thought I stated it pretty plainly.
Water vapor has MUCH MORE of an effect on atmospheric temperatures than carbon dioxide does. Due to the fact that it is more abundant than CO2; and because it absorbs and emits much more heat than CO2 can.
But, what has the most effect on global temperatures is solar activity. Man's effect is trivial. Thus, Anthropogenic Global Warming is a HOAX!
Please, re-read this article by Mr. Ferrara. And the blogpost by Mr. Bandow from today. The global warming hoax is unraveling before our eyes.

Very well put. Have you noticed that the more a comment makes sense on here, the more people enjoy trying to put it down with personal attacks? This is exactly what you would expect from people who don't have the knowledge needed to actually debate an issue. Communication is very important and necessary to solve problems, but there seems to be a growing problem of being able to even begin true communication with people who, for some reason, are only open to a very narrow range of views. It seems that all attempts to actually communicate ideas on here are simply not working. Maybe there is a time and a place to not say anything. The #1 trick of the AGW crowd was to get CO2 identified with pollution in the media mind. It is not. Every living thing on Earth is composed of carbon compounds constructed from CO2 in the air.
Unfortunately, some of the ocean corals etc. have been too enthusiastic, and sequestered most of it in limestone, chalk, etc. So the Earth is now in a CO2 famine. We would have to burn coal to cook the CO2 back out of much of the world's limestone to get it back!
So CO2 production should be subsidized wherever possible.

Step 1: There is a natural greenhouse effect.
The fact that there is a natural greenhouse effect (that the atmosphere restricts the passage of long wave (LW) radiation from the Earth’s surface to space) is easily deducible from i) the mean temperature of the surface (around 15ºC) and ii) knowing that the planet is roughly in radiative equilibrium. This means that there is an upward surface flux of LW around [tex]\sigma T^4[/tex] (~390 W/m2), while the outward flux at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) is roughly equivalent to the net solar radiation coming in (1-a)S/4 (~240 W/m2). Thus there is a large amount of LW absorbed by the atmosphere (around 150 W/m2) – a number that would be zero in the absence of any greenhouse substances.
Step 2: Trace gases contribute to the natural greenhouse effect.
The fact that different absorbers contribute to the net LW absorption is clear from IR spectra taken from space which show characteristic gaps associated with water vapour, CO2, CH4, O3 etc (Harries et al, 2001; HITRAN). The only question is how much energy is blocked by each. This cannot be calculated by hand (the number of absorption lines and the effects of pressure broadening etc. preclude that), but it can be calculated using line-by-line radiative transfer codes. The earliest calculations (reviewed by Ramanathan and Coakley, 1979) give very similar results to more modern calculations (Clough and Iacono, 1995), and demonstrate that removing the effect of CO2 reduces the net LW absorbed by ~14%, or around 30 W/m2. For some parts of the spectrum, IR can be either absorbed by CO2 or by water vapour, and so simply removing the CO2 gives only a minimum effect. Thus CO2 on its own would cause an even larger absorption. In either case however, the trace gases are a significant part of what gets absorbed.
Step 3: The trace greenhouse gases have increased markedly due to human emissions
CO2 is up more than 30%, CH4 has more than doubled, N2O is up 15%, tropospheric O3 has also increased. New compounds such as halocarbons (CFCs, HFCs) did not exist in the pre-industrial atmosphere. All of these increases contribute to an enhanced greenhouse effect.
Step 4: Radiative forcing is a useful diagnostic and can easily be calculated
Lessons from simple toy models and experience with more sophisticated GCMs suggests that any perturbation to the TOA radiation budget from whatever source is a pretty good predictor of eventual surface temperature change. Thus if the sun were to become stronger by about 2%, the TOA radiation balance would change by 0.02*1366*0.7/4 = 4.8 W/m2 (taking albedo and geometry into account) and this would be the radiative forcing (RF). An increase in greenhouse absorbers or a change in the albedo have analogous impacts on the TOA balance. However, calculation of the radiative forcing is again a job for the line-by-line codes that take into account atmospheric profiles of temperature, water vapour and aerosols. The most up-to-date calculations for the trace gases are by Myhre et al (1998) and those are the ones used in IPCC TAR and AR4.
These calculations can be condensed into simplified fits to the data, such as the oft-used formula for CO2: RF = 5.35 ln(CO2/CO2_orig) (see Table 6.2 in IPCC TAR for the others). The logarithmic form comes from the fact that some particular lines are already saturated and that the increase in forcing depends on the ‘wings’ (see this post for more details). Forcings for lower concentration gases (such as CFCs) are linear in concentration. The calculations in Myhre et al use representative profiles for different latitudes, but different assumptions about clouds, their properties and the spatial heterogeneity mean that the global mean forcing is uncertain by about 10%. Thus the RF for a doubling of CO2 is likely 3.7±0.4 W/m2 – the same order of magnitude as an increase of solar forcing by 2%.
There are a couple of small twists on the radiative forcing concept. One is that CO2 has an important role in the stratospheric radiation balance. The stratosphere reacts very quickly to changes in that balance and that changes the TOA forcing by a small but non-negligible amount. The surface response, which is much slower, therefore reacts more proportionately to the ‘adjusted’ forcing and this is generally what is used in lieu of the instantaneous forcing. The other wrinkle is depending slightly on the spatial distribution of forcing agents, different feedbacks and processes might come into play and thus an equivalent forcing from two different sources might not give the same response. The factor that quantifies this effect is called the ‘efficacy’ of the forcing, which for the most part is reasonably close to one, and so doesn’t change the zeroth-order picture (Hansen et al, 2005). This means that climate forcings can be simply added to approximate the net effect.
The total forcing from the trace greenhouse gases mentioned in Step 3, is currently about 2.5 W/m2, and the net forcing (including cooling impacts of aerosols and natural changes) is 1.6±1.0 W/m2 since the pre-industrial. Most of the uncertainty is related to aerosol effects. Current growth in forcings is dominated by increasing CO2, with potentially a small role for decreases in reflective aerosols (sulphates, particularly in the US and EU) and increases in absorbing aerosols (like soot, particularly from India and China and from biomass burning).
Step 5: Climate sensitivity is around 3ºC for a doubling of CO2
The climate sensitivity classically defined is the response of global mean temperature to a forcing once all the ‘fast feedbacks’ have occurred (atmospheric temperatures, clouds, water vapour, winds, snow, sea ice etc.), but before any of the ’slow’ feedbacks have kicked in (ice sheets, vegetation, carbon cycle etc.). Given that it doesn’t matter much which forcing is changing, sensitivity can be assessed from any particular period in the past where the changes in forcing are known and the corresponding equilibrium temperature change can be estimated. As we have discussed previously, the last glacial period is a good example of a large forcing (~7 W/m2 from ice sheets, greenhouse gases, dust and vegetation) giving a large temperature response (~5 ºC) and implying a sensitivity of about 3ºC (with substantial error bars). More formally, you can combine this estimate with others taken from the 20th century, the response to volcanoes, the last millennium, remote sensing etc. to get pretty good constraints on what the number should be. This was done by Annan and Hargreaves (2006), and they come up with, you guessed it, 3ºC.
Converting the estimate for doubled CO2 to a more useful factor gives ~0.75 ºC/(W/m2).
Step 6: Radiative forcing x climate sensitivity is a significant number
Current forcings (1.6 W/m2) x 0.75 ºC/(W/m2) imply 1.2 ºC that would occur at equilibrium. Because the oceans take time to warm up, we are not yet there (so far we have experienced 0.7ºC), and so the remaining 0.5 ºC is ‘in the pipeline’. We can estimate this independently using the changes in ocean heat content over the last decade or so (roughly equal to the current radiative imbalance) of ~0.7 W/m2, implying that this ‘unrealised’ forcing will lead to another 0.7×0.75 ºC – i.e. 0.5 ºC.
Additional forcings in business-as-usual scenarios range roughly from 3 to 7 W/m2 and therefore additional warming (at equilibrium) would be 2 to 5 ºC. That is significant.

And one thing that's important to keep in mind is that global warming has been studied for quite some time now. It isn't some new idea thought up by new scientists with a political agenda. I know this may be hard to believe, but the evidence is there to support this. Here are a couple of interesting pieces I came across from 1956 and 1958. And these are still really pretty recent studies on human global warming. These studies actually started in the 1800's.

Also, you're mixing apples and oranges here, I think.
The question isn't whether man CAN effect weather. I admitted man does, although it's trivial. Cities, because of concrete, are warmer than rural areas.
The question is whether man is causing global warming because we release too much carbon dioxide, which in turn, will cause catastrophic weather events that will destroy and kill.
It is the latter that is the hoax. There is no proof for it.

This is sad. Name calling, an almost complete lack of facts being used to back up these claims that science is bogus, personal attacks that have nothing to do with this topic what so ever. It's obvious that what's being used here is distraction. It's easier to just call someone a name than to go search out data, and then search out the origin of that data. Every single time someone has told me where there anti-global warming facts were found, I've been able to trace those "facts" back to Exxon and Phillip Morris. Look into this. Exxon started a campaign to place doubt in the public mind about the science behind humans role in global warming. ExxonMobil is the worlds most profitable corporation. It makes it's money mostly from oil, and has more to lose than any other company from efforts to tackle climate change. Here is a quote from Exxon: "Should the public come to believe that the scientific issues are settled, their views about global warming will change accordingly. Therefore, you need to continue to make the lack of scientific certainty a primary issue of debate." Exxon funds many organizations that are very well known like The Cato Institute, TechCentralStation, and the Heritage Foundation. And some of the names on the list are made to look like grass-roots organizations, with name like the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change, the National Environmental Policy Institute, and The American Council on Science and Health. They fund these organizations to create the impression that doubt about climate change is widespread. They also use selection when it comes to reporting data by finding one contradictory study, and promote it relentlessly, even long after it's been disproved by further work. They also use quotes from so called "climate experts" who are actually not scientists at all, and feed them to the general public. And this is where a lot of people with the best intentions are led astray. The actual scientific information gets watered down, or replaced completely by corporations with one agenda: to keep making maximum profits, not matter what the cost.
I think it's great that people are questioning what they're being told. We should question, and then look into everything presented to us. But, we have to take the time to do the research. We have to go to the source, to the raw data, and be sure we understand what we're being told is the truth. Don't get your info from media outlets, or opinion pieces of any kind. Science isn't based on opinion, or politics. It can be colored and shaped after the fact, but when it comes down to it, the raw data has to make sense, and it's checked by an entire community of scientists worldwide. And luckily, the public can also view and test this information for themselves. As soon as this open forum is taking away from us, then I'll believe there's a hoax. Until then...the data speaks for itself.
