The Obama Watch

'Sorry, Folks' -- A Message From Your Captain

For the benefit of the president's State of the Union speechwriting crew.

This is your captain speaking. I have an important announcement. We lost radio contact with the ground shortly after take-off and have been flying blind ever since. I have no idea whether we are still in U.S. territory, and we do seem to be losing altitude and running short of fuel. Sorry, folks, but that's the risk that you took in choosing to fly with us. Nancy and the other flight attendants will be coming through the cabin one last time to collect your valuables. Brace yourselves for a hard landing, and thank you for flying Hope-and-Change Airlines.

As someone who toils in the same trade, I throw that out for the benefit of President Obama's speechwriters, knowing it can't be easy to write this year's State-of-the-Union. Maybe they will not wish to use my words exactly, but there are two or three points in my thumbnail version of the presidential address they cannot afford to ignore.

Given the disastrous turn of events in Massachusetts, there must be some acknowledgement in the speech that the Obama / Pelosi government has lost touch with the people. This is their failure. They can't very well blame it on George W. Bush.

Second, it's not just Obamacare that has turned into a legislative disaster. The whole stimulus bill hasn't "saved" or "created" any jobs. It is a $787 billion shell game -- taking money out of the private sector and putting it to less productive use in the public sector or passing it around as hand-outs to politically favored Democratic Party constituents. In doing so, the "stimulus" has actually destroyed jobs. People are no longer fooled when the president refers to wasteful public spending as an "investment." They recoil from the idea that the president should act as the nation's Chief Investment Officer. They don't want to be saved by Mr. Obama. They want to be saved from him -- saved from the further pursuit of government-aggrandizing policies.

And third, the president's wordsmiths really need to do something -- and fast -- about his trademark phrase. It won't do if people burst into laughter every time he mentions hope and change

Politically speaking, laughter sometimes is the best medicine. Under the parliamentary systems in Britain and Israel, it is perfectly possible for a prime minister to be laughed and shouted out of office long before his slated term is up. In those countries, the prime minister and members of his government must be able to defend their policies in the hurly-burly of parliamentary debate. All it takes to bring down a sitting government is a vote of no confidence, which can happen at any time if the national debate, as it is reflected in parliamentary debate, takes a decisive turn against the government.

But that is not something Mr. Obama has to worry about. Short of impeachment, our system gives an incoming president the gift of time -- four years guaranteed -- and the super majorities that the Democrats now hold in Congress further insulate the government from having to pay any heed to its critics. Our system works well enough in its own way -- as witness the whole tea party movement and the stunning victory that Scott Brown won in succeeding to Ted Kennedy's senatorial seat -- but it does not provide the same freedom to dispose of a sitting president and members of his cabinet.

This being the case, the American people must hope that an incoming president -- especially one as inexperienced and otherworldly as Mr. Obama -- will quickly learn from his mistakes, regroup and find the right path. It happened with Truman at the end of World War II.

Unfortunately, Mr. Obama seems more like Jimmy Carter than Harry Truman. Like Carter, he is not so much a dealer in hope as he is a dealer in discredited, second-hand ideas -- all of the useless baggage that "progressives" have been carrying around in their heads since the time of FDR and before. They go drearily forward thinking that government can stimulate "innovation," "investment" and "job creation" -- mindlessly indifferent to all the evidence that it will only make a mess of things.

Truman, who was very much his own man in a way that Carter and Obama could never be, was able to disentangle himself from that legacy. Mr. Obama, it seems, has neither the desire nor the capacity to do so. He wishes only to be a hero in his own mind -- and in those of his most besotted followers.

And so we fly onward on Obama Air for another three years. It's a long and rather tedious flight (given the captain's incessant speechifying), and the best we can hope for is a hard landing.

Obama has created or saved millions of Republicans. Give credit where credit is due, Mr. Wilson.

Margie| 1.25.10 @ 6:39PM

'Tis indeed one of the BEST ones I've heard yet.

Becky| 1.26.10 @ 9:02AM

Excellent. Well put.

Mr. Wilson,
I copy pasted this from the "ROVE Not So Fast"
article here on the site today. I felt it has merit here too.

Ford and Steve,
You are both raving lunatics!

You live in a fantasy world, just like our favorite goofusses here, Toddard, and Bob.

Ford, and Steve,

Let me " 'splain" something to you both, in real small words so you can understand it.

Our country cannot survive as a free society beyond 2010, (via the ballot box), unless we conservatives can get a majority in at least one chamber of the congress in DC.

Of course we need to develop our "farm system", duh, but you guys better get your heads out of your butts. Besides, in every district in America, there is only one ballot, with national as well as State elections listed.

Personally, I am going to vote a straight Republican ticket, and I hope everyone else here does. You know why?

Because every ignorant or fictitious vote on that election...will be a straight Democrat ticket vote.

Any crummy local "farm system" Republican MIGHT go along with his/her better peers as a group in session...and perhaps drop out along the way as we discover their weakness.

No Sirs,
we are going to put our money and our voice and other support behind national legislators this time around. We are going to nationalize every election where we can find a solid conservative to go to DC for us.
TEAM AMERICA

Margie| 1.25.10 @ 3:28PM

I've voted straight Republican ticket since the first time I ever voted and will continue doing so.
Like Rush said recently.. are there any Socialists in the Republican Party? Any Marxists? And I will add to that.. any Communists? Fascists?

IndependentThinker| 3.29.10 @ 6:06AM

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Pearle...neocon fascist pigs! Neocon establishment republicans are just as bad as democrats. They sell us all out at the first opportunity. We could fix this thing with a real conservative with libertarian views...never forget that Bush was a horrible president. Obama is worse, but repubs had 8 years with presidency and all houses of congress, and they blew it.

ds80| 1.25.10 @ 10:11AM

Tim - you made my day/week/month/year/this-president's-only-term with that phrase:

"Obama has created or saved millions of Republicans"

Neolibertarian| 1.25.10 @ 10:40AM

Absolutely hilarious. Kudo's.

sinanju| 1.25.10 @ 10:57AM

I know it's wishful thinking, but I'm can't help but pray for a Ceausescu moment on Wednesday night. We got a preview of coming attractions from his Elyria, OH townhall last week and I just know The Messiah is going to trot out his populist fightin' rhetoric and preacher cadences yet again, trying to whip up our indignation against the top-hatted little monopoly men on Wall Street and telling us how he's going to fight for this and fight for that and how many jobs he's going to save and create for us in the near future and how healthcare will actually save jobs, & c.

I am praying for another heckler. We've already seen that he can't handle heckling. This time around I'm hoping that everyone spontaneously starts joining in and boos him out of the chamber.

The only way the dems can save their own hides this time around is to take the lead in prying Obama out of the Oval Office before November--whether it's by impeachment or by dribbling out all that information about his unknown past that he's been sitting on so far. Never underestimate the dems ruthlessness in self-preservation.

One thing I can say for certain. I knew he would make a mess of things but I don't think any of us could have imagined how far he would fall in a single year's time. His decline is not just steepening. It is snowballing and picking up speed geometrically. I can't see the MSM covering for him for much longer.

pugsley| 1.25.10 @ 12:59PM

Sinanju-I think that o's moment is coming at him from many directions. You are so right about the rats talent for self preservation. His grades, transcripts, papers, associations(some known) his birth certificate all are fair game now that rats of all stripes know the fats in the fire. Remember Hillarys long locked up graduation speech that no one could touch? Even that came out and these things will too when things get bad enough. Bad enough for rat election hopes that is, have no fear. This too shall pass is an appropriate phrase to insert here but it will be painful I am afraid before this ends but so be it. The o is in and it is up to the American people to right this wrong and in due time not only the o will be gone many many rat brothers in congress will join him.

Jim O'Brien| 1.25.10 @ 10:59AM

In his state of the union speech Hussein will likely make more promises of federal doles to "working families" (a favorite phrase of Sir Kennedy) ---- new tax credits for this and that, using the federal income tax system as a political tool (or drug) to calm his middle class subjects, who are increasingly mad as hell. One wonders if he will have the audacity to use the word "terrorism" when describing the failures of his administration in allowing the first terrorist attacks in the U.S. (Fort Hood and Detroit) since 9/11/01. Or will he just promise Islamists "equal treatment" and "justice" under the Constitution, in the judicial system intended for 'we the people'? B. Hussein Obama and his Congressional Democrat comrades hold the average American in contempt. Americans have figured this out; hence the Scott Brown victory and many many more to come, as Democrat cockroaches get stomped on in November.

Appleby| 1.25.10 @ 11:04AM

Hope and Change are sooooo yesterday. Today the phrase is "fearful and anxious" or "fear and anxiety." Someone on Fox started counting them up yesterday and it was funny in a morbid kind of way.

Ray| 1.25.10 @ 11:45AM

it's ironic, isn't it? After just one year of the Obama administration, the entire country has changed from hopeful to fearful, from optimistic to pessimistic. Even Obama admits as much. I wonder if he and the rest of his supporters truly understand why?

pugsley| 1.25.10 @ 1:06PM

Ray-add one more to the list. Skepticle to mad as Hell!!! No they don't understand why because they are all drawing 6 and 7 figure salaries and are very much insulated from the pain of everyday working folks in this country but soon enough they will get it. Remember what John Dulles said in the early fifties to a European group at a party when asked about the American system of government. Dulles answered we have a unique form of government in America, the ballot or the bullet. I think that just about sums it up on so many levels.

jammies| 1.25.10 @ 11:06AM

"Given the disastrous turn of events in Massachusetts, there must be some acknowledgement in the speech that the Obama / Pelosi government has lost touch with the people. This is their failure. They can't very well blame it on George W. Bush."

Massachusetts is only a disaster for Democrats -- for the rest of us, it's a TRIUMPH!

obama et al will NEVER acknowledge that they "have lost touch" or are in any way responsible for Brown's victory over Martha Coakley (there hasn't even been any acknowledgment that the Kennedy speaking about her called her "Marcia" instead of "Martha", so expecting a more comprehensive statement of error is highly unlikely!)

Since Democrats refuse to believe that they HAVE failed, obama won't make any statement to that effect, and he WILL continue to blame George W. Bush -- most likely, the prior Bush administration will be blamed for all of obama's problems LONG AFTER obama is out of office!!!

Louis Jenkins| 1.25.10 @ 11:12AM

The only problems I had flying on Hope and Change Airlines is that I had to be strip searched, every body cavity examined, x-rayed until I glowed, and then had to complete a psychological profile. Even then I was left on the ground as the flight departed. Too much conservative baggage at $25.00 per bag. I guess I'll have to walk. It's more carbon and cardio friendly.

Obama's plan is simplistic- put a big enough GE turbo-fan on it (stimulus money) and he can make the Statue of Liberty fly, but as said, get ready for a rough landing. No one will be walking away from it.

Jason B. Kane| 1.25.10 @ 1:10PM

Mr. Obama is a post colonial African Marxist. As such he is not invested in expanding freedom from government. He is interested in expanding government control over our freedoms.

As we see clearly with the banks, he forced all major banks to take stimulus money and then castigates and demonizes them for doing so. That is so he can enact new restricitons and taxes on them to give the government life and death power over the financial system.

Like Cap and Tax, healthcare reform is not a whit about making the system better or less costly, it is about gaining complete control over more of the economy. Cap & tax would provide over the broadest expanse of the energy system from gas and oil to electric utilities.

The healthcare reform is an amazing congressional democrat shell game. Taxes begin immediately, benefits not so much. That is if there are any benefits to most Americans. Most benefits will go to those who don't work and the democrat welfare slaves. But working Americans s will pay the freight.

Healthcare reform is simply and plainly, about governemnt control of healthcare right down to hiow much wages will be and who will be entitled to what treatment. Not a lot of involvement of medicval professionals in either decision.

Listen....... You can hear the sounds of jackboots coming in the night.

Karcarius| 1.25.10 @ 2:04PM

Obama is such a hard-lined ideologue that he will never move toward the center like Clinton did.Which is why his first term will be his last.He seems to think that he is always right which makes him a narcissist in the worst way.Every time he speaks on TV(and there have been many times, more than any other president)I end up yelling at him saying "That's not the way it is".He thinks too much with his heart and that's a dangerous thing.

Franklin| 1.25.10 @ 2:11PM

What is that saying? "The definition of insane is trying to do something the same way expecting different results."?

Hasn't all 'this' (progressive agenda) been tried and tried and tried before with hideous results? Millions killed or left (forced) to starve; produced goods funneled to the elite while the producing masses suffer and die; remove control of everyday life from the citizens and given to the elite who then manipulate those citizens to give them more...

Is there one country that tried the progressive - socialist - marxist - fascist - communist route and actually succeeded in creating utopia?

Paul from SA| 1.25.10 @ 2:18PM

The speech writers indeed have their work cut out for them this week, because Obama is in big trouble domestically and the American people are turning against him and his agenda.

It may be one of the most watched State of the Union speeches because there's a lot at stake for the country, and a lot at stake for the Democrat party, the liberal media, and the liberal agenda.

Voters are energized after the Mass. senate election. We have the power to remove them all, even liberal Dems from liberal states.

Obama will talk about jobs, jobs and more jobs. The problem is these will be gov't created, temporary public union green-type jobs for Democrats -- not the kind of private-sector jobs that come from companies making lots of profits.

I don't think Obama knows how businesses operate. Businesses don't exist to help people; they exist to make a profit.

Even if I received a stimulus check from Obama, I wouldn't suddenly go out and hire some permanent, full-time employees with benefits. I would hire part-time temporary workers -- people whom I can fire at the first sign of trouble. And that is after maxing-out overtime for current employees.

No, Obama must straddle the line.... He cannot actually resort to using conservative economic policies but he'll try to trick people into believing so.

I think whatever he tries to do thru the speech will fail. Only the left-wing base of the Dem party will believe him. The rest of the country, the Tea Party, the GOP, the independents, the moderates... have wised up. He lost his credibility. The liberal media lost their credibility.

martin j smith| 1.25.10 @ 2:44PM

I have taken the liberty of penning a SOTU speech for our would-be dictator in chief.

It shall be refreshingly brief, but it will be from the heart; no more opacity from our whack-job in chief.

Of course we'll begin with the usual pomp, the usual entry into the chamber and the camara-craven glad-handing. Then our sullen adolescent in chief will make his way the podium.

After the smattering of applause from the left side of the chamber subsides - having failed to crest - our ignorant ideologue in chief will say this:

"Let me be clear: Screw you all. You don't deserve me. Ya'll are a bunch of racists. I will be in my trailer, and I won't come out until you idiotic, bible-toting, gun-clinging, tea-bagging rubes learn to appreciate me. I may even hold my breath until I turn blue. And if I pass out, it will be all your fault.

Good night."

Buh-bye Barack. By all means, let the door hit your ass on the way out.

Ground control to major Tom, “Space Oddity”–David Bowie

Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills
and put your helmet on

Ground Control to Major Tom
Commencing countdown,
engines on
Check ignition
and may God’s love be with you

Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit’s dead,
there’s something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you….

Here am I floating
round my tin can
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do.

"Of all the types of tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -C.S. Lewis

Grzmlyk| 1.25.10 @ 4:01PM

Bravo to you, Margie!

I must say, I didn't think Obama's cocoon of godliness would be torn so quickly.

I honestly believe that, no matter how hard David Brooks or James Carville or Katie Couric or any of them try to reinflate the balloon, the rip is just to substantial; Obama will never soar again.

I would say the next couple of years will be entertaining, but unfortunately, the stakes are too high - and god only knows how fickle public opinion is. But I think the die is cast.

I have a feeling the SOTU will be one of the most uncomfortable speeches to sit through - the entire administration is detached so thoroughly from reality that it defies belief.

Obama's speechifying will be like sitting through a dreadful auditioner on American Idol whose talent is only apparent to himself.

I think we're in for three years of pouting - which is one thing I'm guessing Obama DOES do well.

No matter what, though, even many on the left have taken the scales from their eyes and seen the truth: the emperor is undeniably naked.

Margie| 1.25.10 @ 4:43PM

Grrrzz (like a grizzly bear),

I get a pit feeling in my stomach just picturing the SOTU happening. I don't have t.v. but could probably get it online. But I will not watch because I can't stand it. I can't stand to see the man behind the mask. Or curtain.
I hear he used 3 teleprompters in speaking to a 6th grade classroom today. How sad. Could you imagine GW doing something like that? You can't even talk to children? Try picturing Obama even trying to read a children's book to them..how would he 'deal'? a wise man I know once said that the way you are toward children is the way you are toward Jesus. I think that's true because children are so honest, and if you're not, you can't stand being around them, and don't know how to act.

I think you're right when you say the scales have fallen from a lot of people on the Left. The Independent voters gave us Scott Brown in MA. And let's pray that they along with conservatives and Republicans, give us a Republican President in 2012!

Milesdei| 1.25.10 @ 5:51PM

Margie| 1.25.10 @ 8:24PM

I see. Did you post 3x for the 3 tele-prompters?

JanevonMises| 1.25.10 @ 4:18PM

I am not so confident that Obama will continue to languish in the echo chamber of the Progressive Ideal, drinking in the sound of his faux preacher cadences, undisturbed by the reality of the pitchforks clanging against the White House fence.

My gut is telling me that he will use the SOTU to try to increase the size of the welfare class by convincing the middle class folks that "they need their fair share". And that several of our fellow citizens will blindly choose the soft, soul-sapping tyranny of the government check.

I am afraid that many of my fellow citizens will waiver in their newly re-discovered Conservative (or Libertarian) faith, and be seduced by the words that scroll down the teleprompter's screens. Those words will sound good. They will be sops--all about "fairness" and "getting ahead" and "compassion". Underneath this glittering net will be the real view--all about "control" and "power" and "payoffs".

I hope I am very wrong. If anyone can show hard evidence to convince me, please do so. This president is an attractive demagogue in the worst sort of way, and very, very dangerous.

John Locke| 1.25.10 @ 4:36PM

What this country needs is a truly LIBERAL president and congress! And I forgive the reader for suspecting that this must be some kind of bad joke!

But the Democrats believe in "statism" --- not "liberalism."

They benefit from the imprecise American political terminology ---- we say "the government" here in the USA ---- rather than "the state." And that's a dangerous problem.

Famous brands of statism in recent centuries have been Nazism, socialism, fascism, communism, and welfare statism ---- this last is sort of a mix of fascism and socialism.

Liberalism, on the other hand, is a political philosophy of small, cheap government ---- and the job of a liberal government is to enforce human rights within its own jurisdiction.

I speak of the inalienable and perfectly-natural and universally-valid human rights of life, liberty, private property, and the pursuit of personal happiness.

The first article of private property is "the self" and all other rights are derivatives of and flow from these cardinal rights.

These rights ----The Rights of Man ---- are the gift of nature or of nature's god ---- and they belong to all human beings, everywhere.

Show me a Democrat who subscribes to all of the above, without qualifications or weasel words.

The words "liberal" and "liberalism" were hijacked by the Democrats and socialists and fascists long ago ---- and it was the mistake of conservatives and libertarians to let them get away with it.

It is long past time that liberalism be reclaimed, defined, and explained by its rightful owners ---- by the champions of freedom, i.e.: not by Democrats.

Well, how about "progressivism?" Whuzzat?! Isn't that just another statist cancer? It chews you up, piece by piece, in the name of Da Peepul? Eat Da Rich? Moral cannibalism, anyone?

Friends of freedom! Friends of peace-through-strength! And friends of prosperity! Declare yourselves to be "liberals," then ---- and kick over the bloody coffee tables --- and overthrow and trounce the Democrats in 2010 and 2012!

Margie| 1.25.10 @ 4:49PM

Dear Mr. Locke,

I truly appreciate the sentiment, and the speech. However I just simply refuse to hold my nose and call myself a (ugh) Liberal!

John Locke| 1.25.10 @ 10:59PM

Understood, Margie --- but by stripping the "liberal" and "progressive" masks away from the Democrats --- by peeling that stinky onion, we expose their gruesome innards --- which are opposed to the fundamental values of the American Revolution that made America great. No worries, not required. ~:

Mr. Wilson,
Thanks for this article.
My husband is a big fan of Harry Truman. Not of the Liberal policies he put forth, but of his later years. The difference between him and Obama is that Harry Truman was a good man. I can't see any good in Obama at all. He doesn't seem to have much of a conscience, if he has one at all. Instead of being appalled by the effect his despicable policies (take overs) are doing to the country, what does he do? Comes out fighting and tells us he's going to do more of the same. What a horrible man! I doubt that he will be at all conciliatory in his speech.
Oh, and I sometimes watch the Parliamentary debates on C-Span online. I have to admit I enjoy them and find them very funny at times. I appreciate how the members just stand up and give it to each other. Not much political correctness there! I enjoy the Brit humor. Always have. It cracks me up.

But, as we all know someone will come along and muck up our little dream and the next day the little peons in our minds willl be creaming at the top of our lungs, "IMPEACH THIS DIPSTICK FRAUD" and jail the rest of them for having robbed the United States Treasury. Good night all.

FTM| 1.25.10 @ 10:30PM

Better be ready with an agenda to replace what we've got now. I'd suggest that reversing the Ronald Regan inspired notion of "free trade" with true free trade. The Japanese may build better cars that we do and that's a shame on us. With that said however, we can bury Japan under rice raised here in America. How come we can't export rice to Japan? How come we can't export wine made in kalifornia to the EU? The list goes on and on. We don't need a trade advantage but we do need an opportunity to trade. Did you know that Chrysler, Ford and GM can only export a car made in the US to Canada? Why can't Ford sell cars in Japan and Korea and India? Why is that?

Next issue, pay down the national debt. Cut costs. Get the US out of the UN and then get the UN out of the US. Stop paying little girls to have babies. Stop paying thug governments the world over in the name of "foreign aid." We for sure as hell don't need a "National Endowment for the Arts." National Public Radio and Public television are nothing more than propaganda engines for the statist left. Defund these entities (if we're still subsidizing them).

We can surely stop paying and prevent ever again paying an organization like ACORN out of public funds.

I'm sure that someone with more time on their hands can come up with a list of cost savings that could at least put a dent in the national debt. In my most humble opinion the national debt is the most serious problem that this country faces.

Someone' rockin' my dreamboat,
Disturbin;' a beautiful dream.
We were sailin' along
So peaceful and calm -
Suddenly somthin' went wrong -

I don't remember the rest, but it is unimportant, the message is clear.

Any chance BHO delivers his STOTU speech in front of a recycled Greek theme facade?

After all, this president is truly Icarus - in the flesh.

As much as a disliked president Clinton, he was a very good politician and was a realist. I remember the day after the democratic defeat in the 1994 elections he had a press conference where he was humble and accepted defeat. It turned out very good for him personally (not for the democratic party) because he could position himself as a counter force to the republican in Congress.

It is different now in that this was a bi-election and the democrats still control Congress (until November?). If BHO accepts the verdict of the public he can survive. Maybe he should let the democratic party go down to defeat in November to allow a comback for him in 2012. There is definitely a major conflict of interest between the president and democratic members of Congress in marginal districts.
