Nearly 50 million abortions since 1973.
One struggles to say something new or insightful on this dark day, the 37th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s usurpation of democracy, human and natural rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
As most readers will recall, it was on this day in 1973 that the nation’s high court legalized abortion on demand, for any reason imaginable, for all nine months of pregnancy, up to the moment of birth. This was the legal effect of the court’s two decisions in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton.
Over the years the number of abortions reached an all-time high of 1.6 million per year in 1990, dropping to 1.2 million per year as recently as 2007. A good approximate count as to the total number of unborn lives lost is something on the order of 49,551,703.
In the blink of an eye, America will have killed off nearly 50 million of its progeny. The obvious comparisons have already been made to the loss of life in the Civil War, the Viet Nam War, 9/11, Iraq, and Afghanistan, all of which, combined, cannot rival this butcher’s bill for abortion’s grip on the land in just one year.
Facts, as they say, are stubborn things.
One must give thanks that the Supreme Court, just barely, allowed a ban on “partial birth abortion” to stand, a kind of infanticide practiced at the instance of birth, using methods that makes a sentient person’s stomach turn. One must also praise the fortitude and political savvy of the former Michigan state trooper and Congressman from the Upper Peninsula, Bart Stupak, who forced his own Democratic Party leadership to allow him, successfully, to seek a prohibition on abortion funding in the House health care bill.
And there is the glimmer of hope one can find in the recent turning in public attitudes, as documented by the Gallup organization, and discussed on this site, that more Americans call themselves pro-life than pro-choice.
Despite the immobility of the political and judicial culture, its invincible ignorance and studied indifference to the humanity of unborn children, one prays that the culture is not completely lost. Gallup’s research offers some consolation as will the tens of thousands of citizens braving the elements and giving witness to the right to life on the Mall in Washington, D.C. this black anniversary.

I care about education, not abortion.
AS is a secular mag; if you want to change the name from American Spectator to Tyrrell's Catholic Digest, that's a different ball game; abortion would be as important as anything.

Oh your ignorance just "cracks me up!" He! He! He! He!
I know plenty of non-religious persons who are against abortions. You think maybe they're closeted Catholics? --------I bet that's what you're thinking! --------Gosh! You're so funny!!
This has nothing to do w/religion & everything to do w/the survival & dignity of the human species. Solid science back ups the pro-lifers contrary to what people like you think.
Alan Brooks| 1.22.10 @ 5:34PM
I think abortion is evil (esp. now that social progress is finished) but so is all of humanity evil. Let no one boast. You are not a good person, JP, only less evil than some others.
The point?: abortion is merely one of many sins.
Alan Brooks| 1.22.10 @ 5:43PM
"You think maybe they're closeted Catholics? I bet that's what you're thinking! Gosh! You're so funny!!"
My comment is:
AS is a good conservative/rightist magazine, however it is not a good magazine as to its religious pieces; even though I like the religious pieces best by default-- politics is now celebritized popularity- contest.
John II| 1.22.10 @ 10:03PM
Alan, what have you been drinking? Can I have some? --don't be selfish! I'm an UNcloseted Catholic, and we Catholics are not against pleasant vices.
We're against UNpleasant vices, such as killing children. But you don't have to be Catholic or even vaguely religious to see that, at the very heart of all cogent politics, is the first principle that life must be cherished.
Take away or even flaunt that principle, and the whole structure of support for all other political postures collapses. This is why, for example, Professor Obama's blather about social justice and fairness and the rest is utterly empty--a mere sound and fury to advance his cheap will to power.
Abortion is not just one of many issues of the era (and not "merely one of many sins," for Pete's sake). It is THE defining issue of THIS era, rather like slavery in the early 19th century, although deeper still.
Now what exactly have you been sipping on? I'd like to get some of that stuff for myself. Hope it's not too pricey, like Knob Creek.
Alan Brooks| 1.23.10 @ 12:59PM
"Abortion is not just one of many issues of the era (and not "merely one of many sins," for Pete's sake). It is THE defining issue of THIS era, rather like slavery in the early 19th century, although deeper still."
This is opinion, not fact, and beyond that it is not supported by scripture.
First of all, the Bible does not mention abortion.
2) what constitutes a sin is ultimately in God's judgment, not Man's. All politics are MAN-ufactured.
3) Let no one boast (not even rightwingers & conservatives).
John II| 1.23.10 @ 1:59PM
Actually, it's neither opinion nor fact. It's the conclusion of a considered argument which has had close to 40 years of development and crystallization. Grave evil and error have at least the distinction of forcing thoughtful people to think more deeply about the good.
1. The Bible doesn't mention insider trading either, but it has quite a bit to say about stealing, and about murder.
2. What constitutes everything is ultimately in God's creative power and judgment. Man has been given reason and what St. Paul calls the "law written on the heart" to discern good and evil objectively. Serious Christians are under a double mandate not to judge others but never to fail to judge the actions of others. (Tricky, ain't it? Well, no one ever claimed Christianity to be an easy faith--except perhaps liberal Christians.)
3. I wasn't boasting. I was earnestly and perhaps even urgently inquiring into the brand of your hooch. It's very rude and possibly selfish of you to ignore my inquiry.
Alan Brooks| 1.23.10 @ 4:29PM
You are both writing that abortion is worse than other sins, but you cannot point to any scriptural verse to back that assertion up.

Mr. Brooks~
~Abortion IS in the Bible. What part of "Thou shalt not kill" don't you understand?
~As to your second point, "They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that Day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus." Rms. 2:15&16;.
~As to boasting, not all boasting is wrong~ "therefore, as it is written, "Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord." 1 Cor. 1:31.
But some is wrong~ "For the wicked boasts of the desires of his heart, and the man greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD." Ps. 10:3.
~Take heed.
Alan Brooks| 1.23.10 @ 4:32PM

Then the unborn Vietnamese babies who were killed 1965- 1973 ought to be on the 'Nam vets consciences.

"You are both writing that abortion is worse than other sins, but you cannot point to any scriptural verse to back that assertion up."
Actually, again, I can. There are many, many passages that deal with proportionate wrong--and state-sanctioned murder is pretty high on the list. But I'd be more interested just now in learning how you think you know that I can't. In any event, I don't think I would bother--your mode of expression betrays an astonishingly thick, possibly impenetrable smugness. If I weren't such a coward, I'd demand an immediate apology.
"Then the unborn Vietnamese babies who were killed 1965- 1973 ought to be on the 'Nam vets consciences."
Say--what?
"What have I been drinking? Anheiser BUSH,

Regarding #2: 'what constitutes a sin is ultimately in God's judgment, not Man's.'
Mankind was given the gift of reasoning. Right reasoning goes thusly: I would not want done to another what I wouldn't want to have had done to myself. Wrong reasoning goes thusly: I have a greater right to life than an innnocent other.
There is no human right to choose a wrong! And that's a fact.
Liberty or Death| 1.26.10 @ 5:02PM
First, I don't think you believe that "Abortion is evil," or you wouldn't be stumping so hard in its defense.
The Bible does mention LIFE you meat head! But you and your close-minded, Christ-hating ilk, would rather not take responsibility for your own actions, instead, taking the easy way out, murdering your mistakes!
If you want to have sex... far be it for me to judge. Just wrap it up for crying out loud. In this day and age, there is no excuse for "unwanted pregnancy."
This wanton murder is only being promulgated for 2 reasons: selfishness and godlessness.
Everybody wants to feel good, but nobody wants to own up to the consequences behind it.
And...
Our nation has been steadily trying to erase Christ from every possible mention and historical reference.
Your quarrel isn't with those of us who value life. It's with the maker of heaven and Earth. You see, you can only VALUE life when you know where it comes from.
Don't get angry at us for pointing out the obvious idiocy of your argument.
You make me sick. And one day there will be a reckoning for the lives you have spilt.
Jpac| 1.26.10 @ 8:05PM
"If you want to have sex... far be it for me to judge. Just wrap it up for crying out loud. In this day and age, there is no excuse for "unwanted pregnancy."
Actually, and unfortunately, for those who have no qualms about having casual sex or STRICKLY for the fun of it in a marriage and opt to use contraception the failure rate are higher than that which is listed on the box and pregnancy is always a possible outcome.
That said, one should never have sex with someone they might not want to be involved with for the rest of their life. Both off-spring and aborted child remain in the lives of their parents... forever.
Unitive and procreative are partners in sex not choices, as one or the other, even if the procreative aspect is unlikely, as in older women and the infertile... When you get those two right, through mutual self-giving, you come as close to understanding God as we limited humans can get.
Liberty or Death| 1.26.10 @ 8:52PM
Thanks for your comments Jpac. I completely agree, people should not be having sex unless they are absolutely prepared to live with the consequences. And that is a big part of the abortion dilemma. Our pop culture has deemed the whole behavior acceptable, and abortion is so readily available as an alternative, people have shirked their responsibility completely, for the easy way out. It's very sad.
As far as contraception is concerned, I guess we cannot rule out the "moron" factor. Good call.
Alan Brooks| 1.23.10 @ 8:02PM
a) "Alan, what have you been drinking? Can I have some? --don't be selfish! I'm an UNcloseted Catholic, and we Catholics are not against pleasant vices."
b) "I wasn't boasting. I was earnestly and perhaps even urgently inquiring into the brand of your hooch. It's very rude and possibly selfish of you to ignore my inquiry."
GOOD NEWS, these two posts enraged me so that I don't want to comment on abortion ever again-- but it is not what you write above, it is how beneath you it is.
If my little Margie posted the above I would laugh it off, but for someone of your erudition to write something so unnecessarily gratuitous is not silly, it is ludicrous. You could beat me in one hour dialectically and intellectually, but you childishly write that I'm "selfish" (?) for not revealing the (nonexistent) hooch that you accuse me of drinking??
Not only would my little Margie not write those two comments, but even Daphne Kenward on DMT wouldn't write such. But a man of your intelligence.
The insult doesn't anger me, the uncharacteristic imbecility does.
If your intention was to chase me away from commenting on abortion, then you have succeeded-- so perhaps you are a chessmaster at this sort of thing.
But what immature razzes from a mature guy like you!
Alan Brooks| 1.23.10 @ 8:29PM
Know I answer my comments too much, but there are so many afterthoughts in responding to the provocations from some (but by no means all) of the commenters at AS. John II, you appeared to know exactly how to stop me from commenting on the topic of abortion; and this comment right here is not concerning abortion, it is re-iterating my amazement at your aplomb, John:
come to think of it, your razzes were not immature, they were an astute way of getting me to quit the abortion debate. Perhaps I shouldn't have written yours were "immature razzes" but-- rather-- transparent razzes; gratuitous-but-clever.
Even if they weren't consciously designed, they were surely unconsciously designed.
I don't know you from Adam, John II, but you are almost certainly a master at pushing others' buttons.
John II| 1.23.10 @ 11:44PM
Well, whaddaya expect from an old bastard like me? Teaching is no way to get rich, and I don't blame the culture at all for holding such as me in contempt, but after 45 years in the classroom and approximately six thousand students, one cannot help picking up a few tricks to keep a captive audience from falling asleep.
Transparent, yes. Immature? I wouldn't know. Ask my grandkids. (But DON'T ask my wife. She's fond of saying: "I've raised five children--and one of them is almost six years older than me.")
Alan Brooks| 1.24.10 @ 12:56AM
I figured you might even be a prof, John-- unless you mean you are teacher at college.
Promised I wouldn't mention the a-word, ab*rti*n; so will stick to scripture dealing with other topics. True, the Bible doesn't advise us how to shine our shoes, or tell us that insider trading is theft (actually, insider trading is cheating, not exactly outright theft).
The Bible gives us adequate guidance on moral issues, but not practicals. You can't run what we call a civilization with the Word of God, but you CAN run churches, Christian intentional communities, Bible studies, ministries, etc., with the Word.
And we can probably both agree that is a very good thing.
However that is as far as I go.
John II| 1.24.10 @ 11:29AM
"I figured you might even be a prof, John-- unless you mean you are teacher at college."
Well, that's a touchy point for me. I admit that I've spent most of my adult life working in a place where all the teachers have the same first name: Professor. But the name has always struck me as preposterous.
The other day, for example, a student looking for some information poked his head into my office and asked: "Are you a professor?"
To which I responded: "No! I'm a teacher--I work for a living."
In fact, at this point I really am little more than an old bastard. Age gives one a sense of proportion.
Alan Brooks| 1.24.10 @ 1:24PM
You have the Right Stuff!
Might just reconsider my position on [the a-word].
Not that an inellekshuel, even a second rate (third rate on a bad reading comprehension day), intellekshuel takes his cue from anyone.
But you know as well as anyone who has blogged at AS that the more you try to inject virtue into merely the discourse, never mind behavior, the more men (and some women) rebel. Rebelliousness;
reactiveness, defensiveness-- but rebelliousness is the key. So the Culture War's battles and skirmishes are never-ending. Moral counterbalancing is a myth. Battles, and skirmishes, of attrition constitute the Culture War.
But you know all that, John, you are two steps ahead of me at all times; and I-- an ex-liberal-- am always one step backwards as well.
John II| 1.24.10 @ 9:07PM
Hi Alan. What a charming reply. I guess I owe you. So here's the rest of the story.
The student to whom I gave the smart-ass answer was hugely amused. He relaxed instantly and came into my office, and I quickly dug up the information he was looking for. He left in what appeared to me to be high spirits.
And then my conscience kicked in. When he left, I stared off into the middle distance and listened sheepishly to my conscience berating me, more or less in the following terms: "What the hell do you think you're doing, imposing your edgy wit on a 20-year-old? Don't you realize that those kids LIKE to address you by such titles? It makes THEM feel important and accomplished. What if he had been less resilient and you'd pulled that stunt on a kid with less capacity for irony? You're starting to act like an old man with attitude. Swallow your damn pride and accept their little gestures of deference!"
Truth be known, Alan, I'm tired. Thanks for the nice thoughts.
Alan Brooks| 1.24.10 @ 9:40PM
One good thing about believing in God is that you don't have to beat yourself up for making a mistake that turned out 'okay'. You don't want to second guess yourself too much; though having written that, still, we both know that we are always walking a tightrope.
Just accept that God instantaneously inspired you to help the twenty year old in some way. We don't want to be knuckle-dragging Christians, but we don't want to hyper-intellectuals either, lost in the ethers of cloistered academia.
Liberty or Death| 1.26.10 @ 5:42PM
"We don't want to be knuckle-dragging Christians, but we don't want to hyper-intellectuals either, lost in the ethers of cloistered academia."
I really appreciate that you eased up on John II a little, but find irony in your attempt to claim Christianity, and then make a statement like, "The Bible does not mention abortion."
What kind of idiot doesn't make the connection between life and murder, when there are clear ultrasound pictures of babies -complete -with head, arms, legs and toes, in the womb? Yeah yeah, I know, those are just fetus' right? Astounding!
I rather fancy you are the latter of the above statement. Or at least you believe yourself to be... Self delusion seems to be a common failing among most liberals (Obama being a prime example).
Just another hyper-intellectual, lost in the ethers of cloistered academia.
And, I will know you by your fruits.

Celebrate life today by giving to a maternity home where women and girls are supported in their choice for Life. The Sisters of Life stand between women and girls (and by the way, have plenty of men available to counsel and assist the fathers of these babies, who often need a strong supporter too) and the relentless pressure of their own families to believe abortion is an UNDO button. It is not. When you have been pregnant, you are a mother forever, regardless of what you do to your baby after that.

One of the great paradoxes in American political history is Republicans tend to be pro-life and Democrats pro-abortion yet Republican appointees were responsible for Roe v. Wade. Seven justices voted for...five of which were Republican appointees including Chief Justice Burger and the person who wrote the majority opinion Blackmun (both Nixon appointees) so the GOP has abortion blood on their hands just as much as the donkey party if not more.
Anthony| 1.22.10 @ 8:43PM
A nice try Cris; and like most propagandists, you do have some facts correct. The best lie is one with a small amount of truth mixed in.
Burger and Blackmun were what we would call today, RINOs. R appointments were always prone to stray, or were closet liberals like Souter, unlike the hard core true believers chosen by the Ds. Ds never leave anything to chance when it comes to the Supreme Court, Rs were late to understand the game at hand. So true, 5 were Rs, however, they were seduced by the dark side, a malady that comes with excess exposure to the Washington political & social circuit, or were RINOs to begin with.
Blackmun in particular was a special case. He was a non descript, smallish man, with a Walter Mitty complex. It has been written that Blackmun's wife worked his clerks hard into pushing her husband to suppport abortion rights.
Once Blackmun caught the leftist "bug" he relished his role as the "champion" of woman's rights. For once in his life, this little man stood tall. However, the price for his enhanced manhood is unspeakable.
So Cris, the blood that you speak of does not belong the Republicans per se, it belongs to weak and amoral men and woman.
Cris Worth| 1.26.10 @ 8:22AM

"In the blink of an eye, America will have killed off nearly 50 million of its progeny". Truly amazing and illustrates the profound mental sickness within this country - we've killed off as many human beings as died in World War II - the most destructive war in all of human history, requiring advanced weaponry, moral degradationn and death in concentration camps, starvation of men, women and children left to die after invading armies had taken their food and homes, medical experiments on humans, vast battles killing hundreds of thousands, ships sunk in freezing waters, slave laborers worked to death and still more horrors to generate such an incredible number of deaths - but we've somehow managed to match that death toll - we've even gone one better than the fierce combat of WWII and have decided only the innocent should die.
Gregory L. Jackson, PhD| 1.23.10 @ 1:49AM
Have the politicians performed the abortions? The medical industry deserves most of the blame for performing the abortions and the murders on delivery. They are assisted by nurses, administrators, social workers, etc. The mainline churches have been the Amen corner of abortion since the beginning. Abortion has wrecked the moral fabric of America.

How ironic that almost to the day, the Supreme Court, in Citizens United, stood for liberty for all and upheld the simple language of the 1st Amendment, the building block of our free society.
Blackman authored an opinion that will indeed live in infamy. Along with his fellow leftist jurists, the first of the Court's "living and breathing" Constitutional interpreters, Blackman found a right that was not expressed in the Constitution. Justice Douglas discovered his famous penumbras that eminated from the Constitution . Rights that only elitists such as himself could discern. A secret writing, if you will, that was invisible to the rest of society.
So while we mourn the unspeakable results of Blackmun's judicial thinking, we must also come to realize that the battle wages on.
Only today's leftists, schooled in the language of Orwellian double speak, can say with a straight face that Thomas, Scalia, Roberts, Alito and to a lesser extent Kennedy, are judicial activists. The left is in full throat because the Supreme Court, by a single vote, leveled the playing field and allowed all Americans, including private and public corporations, to participate in the political process.
The left and the political class of Washington, to wit, McCain and friends, were content to allow the MSM to have total access to political influence prior to an election. McCain Feingold was indeed the incumbant protection act. But now, small groups of Americans, like Citizens United, which is no Exxon-Mobil, but rather a small corporation, can speak out. The Left cannot tolerate this full expression of ideas and thoughts.
Justice Roberts, during oral argument, was stunned to learn that the movie produced by C.U., if reduced to book form, would have been BANNED by the FEC. In response, Justice Roberts uttered the line of the decade; "We do not leave our Constitution in the hands of FEC bureaucrats".
God Bless Justice Roberts and the origionalists on the Supreme Court, patriots all!!

Excerpt of poignant gravity:
" ... We forthwith acknowledge our awareness of the sensitive and emotional nature of the abortion controversy, of the vigorous opposing views, even among physicians, and of the
deep and seemingly absolute convictions that the subject inspires. One's philosophy, one's experiences, one's exposure to the
raw edges of human existence, one's religious training, one's attitudes toward life and family and their values, and the moral standards one establishes and seeks to observe, are all likely to influence and to color one's thinking and

Thank you for this article. It's amazing to read the hatred from those who have no regard for human like, but GREAT regard for THEMSELVES and their own opinions and want to foist them off on the rest of us.
Thankfully there are many in this country willing to continue to the fight against this evil. Years ago I listened to a radio program that featured a woman who ran many abortion clinics in Texas in the 1980's. She told about the procedures back then. Suction was often used to remove the baby from the womb. The infant was torn into pieces. The baby and it's parts were then thrown into dumpsters. Christians would raid the dumpsters, take out the babies and have funerals for them. That gave the abortion clinics a bad name so how do you think they countered the Christian rescuers? They installed industrial sized garbage disposals so the babies and their limbs could be ground up and no trace of them left to find.
Sad to say this is not publicized as the MSM is right in step with our President in not wanting a woman "punished with a baby". Lets grind it up and put it down the sewer.
