The Blind Side of Avatar

When it comes to understanding America and the threats it faces, James Cameron is no match for Sandra Bullock and Michael Oher.

When the football coach at first fails with Michael because he is too much of a gentle giant, Leigh Anne stomps on to the field, and explains to Michael what is expected of him in terms he can understand. When Michael needs to improve his grades to qualify for a college football scholarship, she hires a personal tutor for him. When one last teacher holds out on improving his grades, she goes to ask him exactly what Michael has to do to improve.

And when his high school highlight tape shows Michael, who in real life is 6 foot, 5 inches tall, and 309 pounds, as an offensive linemen pushing his opponents around all over the field, she is rewarded with one famous top flight college football coach after another trooping to her home to convince Michael to come to their school. Michael chooses the family favorite, Ole Miss, where in real life he went on to star as an All-American. On April 25, 2009, Michael Oher was chosen in the first round of the NFL draft by the Baltimore Ravens. He just completed his first season as the starting left tackle for that team.

Avatar is a technically beautiful movie, and a highly enjoyable fantasy tale of a battle between good and evil. Keep your thinking cap on as well as your 3D glasses when you go to see it. But to learn about the obscured reality in the country you live in, you should go to see The Blind Side.

WOW! Its amazing what Christian values and hard work on the part of a loving parent can do for a lost and lonely child who needs direction and support! The entire city of Detroit should be forced to see Blind Side before they get one more welfare check or day in jail to lay around eating and sleeping.

Wait, Obama money will fix Detroit. I forgot. Never mind.

Appleby| 1.6.10 @ 7:27AM

Avatar is merely a technologically advanced version of the Disneyfied *Pocahontas* -- which even my 8 year old son recognized as historically inaccurate (at the top of his voice until I finally silenced him until we got out of the movie) and without the songs.

PolishKnight| 1.6.10 @ 2:45PM

Appleby, I refer to Avatar as a combination of The Smurfs and Pocahontas.

Funny thing about Pocahantas though. Why did the lefties, which regard Christianity and religion as filthy corruptions of reason in the way of Science portray the Indians as enlightened and spiritual with talking trees? (I thought to myself: "More tree hugging!")

One funny touch was my wife gushing over Poca's pet racoon. "It's so cute!" she said. I pointed out that farmers in our area would shoot such things since they're wild beasts that kills chickens for fun and housecats.

In the meantime, most leftists are not granola eaters at all but surbuban and urban city dwellers who run their A/C on high and drive a car to pick up groceries in guilt-free cloth bags. The REAL leftists are the unbathed scum protesting in the cold at Copenhagen. I can almost respect them. They're nuts, but at least they drink the REAL cool aid!

Robert Annable| 1.6.10 @ 7:53AM

What a ridiculous article! Corporate interests good, poor bad. We need class warfare in the US. The few mega wealthy control the media and us. They have an unquenchable greed and are immoral in how they maintain their wealth. Sending jobs overseas, offshore bank accounts etc
You idiot, use the word torture. I'm sure you'll
use that word when the same enhanced techniques
are used against Americans. The time has come for a revolution to take back this country from the wealthy who get us into wars to steal oil and then corruptly steal the war funding with entities
such as Halliburton, Dyna Corp, Blackwater etc.
The wealthy will give lip service to being Christian
or Jewish but their only God is money and more money. They care the least about US workers. They want to keep us only a little above the level of slaves. Avatar shows the inherent evil of corporate interests. Look at all the democratic governments the CIA has overthrown for corporate interests. Guatemala, Chile, Iran, Indonesia etc. The CIA's overthrowing governments has caused the genocide of millions in Cambodia, Indonesia, the Congo and with our support for death squads and dictators in Central and South America. Lets take back America.

Melvin| 1.6.10 @ 8:25AM

Robert, please answer these questions for me if you will. Why has Congressman Charles Rangel, Chair of the Ways & Means Committee being investigated by the Ethics Committee?
Why did Senator Chris Dodd receive sweetheart deals from Country Wide Mortgage Company?
And why did Nancy Pelosi exempt American Samoans from getting the minimum wage increase?
Not to be forgotten why did Barny Frank give 4 trillion dollars to the banks from the recently passed H.R. 4173, the financial-reform legislation.
So much for the purity of your Leftist ideology.

Eric Cartman| 1.6.10 @ 9:07AM

Poor Robert. Can't stop whining about the past. Can't stop depending on government. Can't stop being mad that the Soviet Union fell apart like the wet bag of shit is was. Boo hoo! Whining like a little girl who wants her dolly - poor Robert.

Meanwhile, normal people want the terrorists not only water boarded, but shot after a short trial.

But, boo hoo. we have to hear the cry babies. Halliburton this, Blckwater that! Oh, cry, cry, cry. Whine about Christians only giving money to charities they believe in and think will do the best with the money - much like Liberals do when they give money to kill babies. Whaaaaaaa, whaaaaaa, whaaaaaa!

Meanwhile, normal people know wars are bad but sometimes necessary to stop bad actors and - yes - make sure oil is available for the world. Hear that? It's Robert gasping and sputtering like a gassy baby. Robert thinks its evil to pay people money for commodities like oil - he calls it stealing. Unlike taxing everything that moves (Hillary's words) which to cry babies like Robert is fair. Boooooo hooooo hooooo!

Cry some more Robert - because you're going to have a nervous breakdown come November! Boo hooo hooo! LOL :-)

Ken (Old Texican)| 1.6.10 @ 9:32AM

Robert,
I've got a brilliant idea for you.

Move to Cuba.

It is pretty obvious you have never held down a meaningful job. Castro will certainly put you to work. heh

Jeff| 1.6.10 @ 2:50PM

I must confess I'm embarrassed. When I first read Robert's comment I thought he was trying to be funny, but after reading other comments it dawned on me that he actually believes the nonsense he wrote.

George F| 1.6.10 @ 2:58PM

Robert Annable you sound very confused as to what is real. I suggest that you need to get out into the real world and experience life as it really is, hard and gut wrenching at times. As it is you appear to be living in some kind of lala land when everything is subjective and not attached to truth. Maybe you don't even believe there is such a thing as truth.

You must be very young. Do you live at home?

Curtis Rasmussen| 1.6.10 @ 6:11PM

Robert Wannabee (in control of all of us), Cameron's movie is on course to make a record profit, yet you think he represents the little guy?

Get a clue.

Stephanie| 1.6.10 @ 8:14PM

Well, Robert honey, you'll have to put obama's top campaign donater, moveon.org supporter, George Soros, FIRST on the hit list.
You fool.

Kris Lepine| 1.7.10 @ 3:23PM

Robert, here's what true torture is. Using a strong saline solution to burn the skin off a pre-born infant. Or to rip the baby apart limb by limb. Or how about delivering all but the babies head, cutting into the nape of the neck so the brains can be sucked out and the skull collapsed. All to get rid of "an inconvience, which we all know is an innocent human being that feels and hears. Or how about the use of drones to drop bombs on our enemies THAT KILL THEM? What a laugh that on the one hand we can's water board our murdering enemies but we can kill them from the air (and anyone around them) and we can murder innocents in the womb? You liberals are such hypocites.

carnot| 1.10.10 @ 11:36AM

well...one can at least hope that the system does care the least about twits like you and does work "with extreme prejudice" to immiserate your idea barren/rhetoric rich arse.

Melvin| 1.6.10 @ 8:13AM

I guess it all boils down to, that if the Left were to admit defeat in their ideology, then they themselves would have to acknowledge that for the last sixty or so years this ideology has done more harm than good.
Not one true Leftist has the moral courage to do so. They would rather let once proud American cities rot and decay into nothingness than admit that maybe just maybe that Libertarianism, and
Conservationism have done more good for Americans than their pitiful ideology that
portrays Americans as victims of an privileged bigoted nation.
Leftists conveniently leave out that they themselves have financially benefited from the very ideology the rail against.
Leftists pound their fists upon the table and decry, "It is every Americans patriotic duty to to pay their taxes." Then they themselves on a massive scale avoid paying their taxes.
It is unconscionable in how any Leftist can admit, that Detroit, Columbus, or any other bastion of Leftism can truthfully admit that these cities are marginally livable.
Truth be told that these Leftist warrens are rotting, stinking cesspools of decadence, drug use, violence, illegitimacy, and every other evil
that exists in human beings.
And this is what Republican progressives and Democrats deem the new American dream. But just as long as it doesn't come to their gated community.

toben| 1.9.10 @ 10:27PM

Detroit- Liberal?
Huh.
Did you in live in or near Detroit.
I did for a long long time.
It was very balanced politcal, as is the whole state of Mich

Detroit sank for one and one reason only....the GREED of conservative thinking that dominates upper mgmt .....upper management drove manufacturing into the ground.

Upper mgmt drove the ship - NOT the workers.

They came up with the scam concept of "planned obsolescence" in the cars design - not the workers.

They came up with the piss poor markting schemes- not the workers.

They decided big not small and low mpg was better - not the workers.

They designed and engineered the shit cars, not the workers.

They followed whatever Big Oil told them to do- not the workers

All of Detroit's problems RIGHT NOW are economic...and caused by white collar greed/fraud. The blue collar crime, which is more readily apparent to idiots like you, is merely the fallout.

The city of Detroit had the highest median income of all US cities in 1955. Was that bad old liberalism at work? It's work force was 55% unionized them. Now it is around 10%.

Any questions?

GREED WON.
And now we all, not just Detroit - will suffer nationwide.

But lets balme the por and working class and liberals

Reagan was the beginning of the end of this country...and you know it.

Actually, both Avatar AND The Blind Side were well-made bits of celluloid with moral nullities at their center. However, Avatar had the good sense not to make its rudimentary moral arguments more than an excuse for the action. The latter movie is morally compromised by a simple fact: if Michael Oher had had no potential as a football player, then neither his adoptive family, the filmmakers, nor audiences would have given a thin poot about his circumstances or his future. Somewhere in Oher's old neighborhood, there were probably a few decent, intelligent youngsters who might have made something of a scholarship to Old Miss, but who weren't athletes. For the likes of Leigh Anne (and the wastes of carbon who populate the booster clubs of this world), the last fact is the one criterion that makes poverty and desperation interesting or not, and that makes going to any pains to foster a young man's success in life necessary or optional.

In the final analysis, one can find Avatar's moral underpinnings grotesque & risible, and it'll still do its intended job as a film. Not so The Blind Side.

Eric Cartman| 1.6.10 @ 10:13AM

WOW! So what you're saying then, Cracker, is that this Leigh Anne woman has the ability to tell the future?! She knew that this kid was going to become a football player and a success? Again, WOW! Then why doesn't she just start buying lottery tickets? You have a great ability to ferret out the truth! You should be a, I don't know, detective or something. No, wait, a SUPER detective! Sherlock Cracker. Man, you are great, dude!

Le Cracquere| 1.6.10 @ 10:37AM

"Sherlock Cracker": I like it! And my kindergarten teachers swore I'd never get anywhere in life...

But if you just HAVE to cast aspersions on my minty-fresh truth-ferreting acumen, feel free to substitute "the filmmakers and approving audience members" for "Leigh Anne."

Eric Cartman| 1.6.10 @ 11:30AM

Dear Detective Sherlock Cracker,
I did the substitution thing and I have to say, your kindergarten teachers may be on to something. Listen to them - they don't want you to repeat again.

explosion proof floodlight| 11.25.10 @ 1:28AM

That's the way it went in the U.S. for decades. People in poor communities were convinced that the police and justice system didn't give a hang about crime in their neighborhoods.

George F| 1.6.10 @ 3:01PM

My, my! What a negative view of life. It must have been hard to limit your view to such a small slice in order to come up with your preconceived notion.

Le Cracquere| 1.6.10 @ 7:44PM

(Logging back on after a hard day's fingerpainting)

When a fellow can infer my views on life from my views on the nauseous genre of "student"-athlete hagiographies, it's easy to see that my short-lived "world's most superest detective" title has been firmly usurped--kudos, my good man!

Marek| 1.6.10 @ 10:03AM

It looked to me like Leigh Ann took in freezing homeless child, not a potential pro football player. My wife and I do some volunteer work with a local homeless shelter and have helped several fatherless families get out of the shelter and on with their lives. Our massively funded welfare system just can't distinguish among the helpless and the hopeless . Where exactly does all that money go? In any family shelter you will find about 30% of the "guests" in need of only a job, a security deposit and the first month's rent. Provide that and this group is unlikely to return to the welfare system. Maybe "Christian Charity" like Leigh Ann practiced is a better solution then "hands off" liberal throw money at....what? or better throw money to who? Acorn?

Al Adab| 1.6.10 @ 10:29AM

Avatar has perhaps been best described as "The Smurfs meet Dances with Wolves" which fairly well shows the proclvities of the Left's world view. Mindless naturalism and Noble Savage etc. meets Imperial bad guys.

On the other hand and fortunate for us all the "better angels of our nature" are amply demonstrated by true stories of people who choose (notice they are not coerced by the Govt.) to share their lives across what those on the Left, with their Marxist world view, would claim are boundries that seperate socio-economic classes and peoples. Note the source of the motivation for the adoptive family.

We are faced with two opposing views of reality. Two views of what is the nature of evil. Each of us faces the choice. To change the world "one life at a time" not massive intervention programs is the key to success. Fight for the good. Evil exists, but so does courage. Overcome evil with good.

Happy New Year to all.

Jeff| 1.6.10 @ 2:55PM

Jeff,
I had (thankfully) forgotten that one. Indoctrination by any other name...

Alarm1201| 1.6.10 @ 10:42AM

Like conservative sociologists have been saying for years, many of the problems of poverty are moral, not economical. Graduate from High School, stay away from drugs, have kids after you get married and you will most likely be a member of America's vibrant middle class.

The problem with govt. doing the job of providing welfare is they provide no moral guidance. They just dump money at anybody who holds a hand out and nothing more.

Phil Glogo| 1.6.10 @ 11:00AM

Enjoyed the article. I haven't seen either film. My son has recommended "Avatar" for the visual experience only. As for "Blind Side", I've heard good things about the movie from my sons, also. I, on the other hand, read Michael Lewis's account of the events regarding Oher and the Tuohey's without the fictionalized movie components. The ENTIRE Tuohey family walked the walk when they stepped up to help someone who was a victim of others circumstances. Good luck to Mr. Oher and I hope he gives back some of his good fortune by being a role model for others who need to learn from the example of his hard work that was necessary to make this opportunity truely work.

Al Adab| 1.6.10 @ 12:08PM

Phil,
World magazine carried a very insightful review of Blind Side. Well worth the read.

(2) CGI.

I left all the other LIB junk behind.

Albert| 1.6.10 @ 11:28PM

One of the myths of the modern welfare state where Democrat politicians claim to be only trying to help the poor. This is absurd. Democrats NEED the poor and they need them to STAY poor. If poor people elevate themselves out of poverty, Democrats lose votes. It is really that simple. Democrats use the poor and indeed even breed poor people as voting livestock through public assistance programs. It is no accident that bastardy is rampant in the welfare "community." It is by design. Nancy Pelosi literally buys votes with other people's money and uses the power of office to guarantee successive generations of poor, family-less, dependent Democrat voters. Mr. Ferrara is correct that an effective support system would be a fraction of the cost of our bloated welfare state. It would not only support those who need it, but it would teach them to become self sufficient. It is because of its proven effectiveness that it is not to be tolerated by Democrat politicians. These politicians use people for their own selfish greedy desires, desires for money, a lavish lifestyle, and what is probably their most important craving, "respect." Nancy Pelosi buys "respect" (or a facsimile of it) with taxpayer money. The American people are not greedy. Democrat politicians are. Americans are self sacrificing, hard working, and generous to a fault. Americans WANT to help! But Democrats only want the power, the prestige, and the lifestyle that come from socialist politics. Democrat politicians are greedy, self absorbed, narcissistic jackasses.

Kris Lepine| 1.7.10 @ 3:29PM

Amen, Robert. Heard on Fox and Friends this morning we are paying 1 BILLION of our hard earned dollars on cell phones for welfare recipients. If you get food stamps you are automatically qualified and there is no system in place for the phones to be taken away if you not longer qualify for them. They use the "honor system". Is is all soooo sickening. I'm with the "vote them all out" camp more and more.

PolishKnight| 1.8.10 @ 1:45PM

Kris, that makes me wonder something. I saw a supposedly homeless man begging at a freeway exit yapping on his cell phone and I thought it was just him getting caught scamming me.

Maybe he was on welfare and this program?

Sam| 1.7.10 @ 3:14AM

Look, I haven't seen the film, but I thought' The Blind Side' was about a nice southern couple who took in a homeless child and set him up to become great.

Now everyone's saying stuff about Christianity and how if only we were all more Christian in our values (like the couple in the movie), things would be a whole lot better.

Which is the main idea? A football player who starts as a listless kid? Or a family that follows the Christian faith?
