Obama Snookers the Right

After Oslo, looking for Mr. Smith in Washington.

For the most part the audience at the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony sat on their hands. They had expected one of Barack Obama’s patented attacks on his own country as an explanation of how the U.S. was changing under his leadership. What they heard was quite different and quite confusing.

Subsequent commentary in the United States on President Obama’s speech was equally confusing. Republicans were pleased by the theme of “just wars,” while Democrats generally thanked their stars that their adored leader hadn’t once again trashed his own country abroad. Of course the media exulted over Mr. Obama’s ability to speak with clarity on matters they judged carried great philosophical import.

While the Nobel Prize audience was stunned by President Obama’s defense of the use of military power to protect the defenseless and to correct injustice, most of the American public was simply surprised that they had waited this long for what since WW2 has been viewed as the basic principle of U.S. foreign policy. Conservative America adjudged that Barack Obama finally had awakened to the fact that the United States is a sovereign country with its own dominant interests rather than simply a member of a global affiliation of disparate entities whose sovereignty has been established by consensus.

Unfortunately such is not true: Barack Obama had made a purely domestic political decision. The writing was on the wall — and in his military commanders’ analyses. Without a minimum of 30,000 more American combat soldiers reinforcing the existing NATO force in Afghanistan (and a wish list of thousands more of NATO forces), the entire NATO position there would be insufficient to overcome the increasing Taliban capability to secure and hold a major portion of the country. What that meant to Obama and his left-wing anti-war advisors was that the traditional domestic independent vote would be lost in 2010 and, even more importantly, in 2012.

The one-term presidency was staring the White House in its face. The ultimately manipulative chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, saw it clearly and so did his pragmatic though ego-driven boss. The principal job was to hold on to the political initiative, reassure the center and make an explainable (to the Left) right turn. The authorization of the additional combat troops needed a philosophical base so beloved by the liberal Left.

The “just war” of FDR and Truman was resurrected and made relevant in the Nobel speech by hailing the precedent of Kosovo, the breakup of Yugoslavia, and the first Gulf War. Iraq was carefully ignored. Rwanda, Darfur and the Congo were tossed in as places that needed but hadn’t been similarly handled — to the detriment of international human rights.

It was a brilliant display (by Obama’s speechwriters) of political legerdemain. In the end, however, it was really just a very clever shifting of ground so as to secure a philosophical foundation that would allow furtherance of a domestic program aimed at a massive federal intervention in traditional American business and social affairs.

The Right fell hook, line and sinker for the Obama rhetorical tactic. Indeed the performance in Oslo was politics at its most sophisticated. One step backward and two steps forward. Where have we heard this before? A great political device: The Left could be made to understand; the Right at the same time would be faked out of their shoes.

The Republicans, and most particularly its conservative wing, were bereft of a political response other than joining in the applause for President Obama’s newly found international backbone. Obama is playing Chicago hardball while the Republican Party is locked in a titanic struggle on the tennis courts of Lake Forest. Guess who wins with that preparation?

Conservative America, and that includes independents, needs to understand that facing a possible seven years more of drastic political, economic and social change in the United States will totally alter the structure of the country. Leadership that is effectively as Machiavellian as the Obama team outpaces the old Washington politics of America’s center and right wing. The Democrats have their “Elmer Gantry”; where is the Republican “Mr. Smith” — or will it be Mrs. Smith?

you are so correct, now you've got all these supposed right wingers singing his praises. "oh, i agree with the president, i commend the president". every liberal in the country recorded every complement and is set to replay them during the campaign. obama sure is smart for a moron.

Martin Owens| 12.15.09 @ 6:41AM

He meant every word of his Nobel speech.
And next week, when he completely contradicts
it, he'll mean that, too. Sincerely.

For the likes of him, the truth is whatever he needs
t0 get by. Today, right now, this minute.

Obama reads a mean teleprompter, but even he can't fool all the people all the time. The latest poll shows him at 44% approval. Politicians can spin a lot of things, but not job loss. Even the dimmest voter knows whether they're employed.

Ret. Marine| 12.15.09 @ 7:17AM

Like the old saying "you can't bullshit a bullshiter"
Now maybe the members, including the RINO's, of the supposed Republican party fell for it hook, line and sinker, those of us who have been paying attention of this entire mess called the obama admin. know a few more truths to this fairy tale.
Truth, his honeymoon with the citizens wore off some 10 months ago. Another fact, his poll numbers are falling like a rock in a pond, his alinskyits and Mao mumblers are fix'n to pull another bait and switch for the obomamutts. This past weekend they passed another sinker into the pond of our republic with another trillion going for wasted pork and party paybacks needed to sent this H/C bill on track of submission to the facsist party leaders without so much as a wimper from We the People.
And of course the GOP has nothing but nicities to squander for their efforts. I am begining to feel like an abused married person waiting for the next blow to come ah swinning before my eyes, question is, on this coming friday what kind of strike will it be, another solf blow to my mind or a left hook of deception as usual.

Moneyrunner | 12.15.09 @ 7:41AM

On December 11 I wrote a short essay titled "Be Careful What You Wish for." I'll repeat is here:

As the majority of the country applauds Obama’s defense of a robust American foreign policy in Oslo, we should examine our assumptions.

Is it really self-evident that we want to see an activist foreign policy employed by acolytes of Jeremiah “God Damn America” Wright who accused Israel of racism? Would we really be comfortable with the foreign policy initiatives of Bill ”Pentagon Bomber” Ayers? Of Van “I am a communist” Jones? Of Anita “My favorite political philosopher was Mao” Dunn?

Is it unfair to point out that many in the Obama administration and in his past are not in the mainstream of American thought and that this gives us a clue as to what a robust foreign policy would be like? We can see what an Obama administration is doing to revolutionize America at home, do we really want to see a radical Left foreign policy enforced by American troops?

I view Obama’s troop surge in Afghanistan as a cynical political move designed for domestic purposes. To abandon the field after repeatedly telling the country that Afghanistan was the “good war” would have damaged his image beyond repair. The surge is “boob bait for the Bubbas” as Moynihan famously said: not enough to get the job done but enough to placate the country.

If the sides we took in Honduras and during the anti-government riots in Iran are an indication, I do not want to applaud an Obama administration should it ever take its eye off of domestic policy and focus on foreign fields.

Motown Mike| 12.15.09 @ 7:42AM

Obama snookers the Right? Please. Obama, in his own weak way, endorsed the foreign policy of George W. Bush.

McGehee| 12.15.09 @ 8:17AM

Perhaps, but what's the expiration date on that endorsement?

JP| 12.15.09 @ 7:44AM

George Wittman is correct. Just read Peggy Noonan's WSJ Op-Ed from last Friday (Obama Moves to the Center). However, I think many on the Right do not wish to do to President Obama what the Left did to Bush. I know many people believe that kind of political graciousness is a weakness of the GOP; however, as Commander in Chief, the President should be given the defrence to conduct military operations as he sees fit.

What really upsets most Conservatives, is the simple fact that President Obama made winning in Afghanistan a major part of his 2008 platform. As a matter of fact, he used it as a rock to hammer the GOP over the head. I clearly remember the accusations hurled at the GOP about Bin Laden being at large, and how the GOP took its "eyes off the prize" by going into Iraw. But in March of this year, all talk about going after Bin Laden was purged from his national security team. And in that March presentation, President Obama made it clear that he was determined to bring things to a head in Afghanistan. By June he appointed a new theatre commander and he upped the number of troops there by 15,000. However, when General McChrystal delivered his combat strategy and troop requirements in August, the President flinched. And his National Security Advisor, General Jones, warned McChrystal that the President would have a WTF moment once he read McChrystal's report. This piece of anecdotal information is still hard to believe. What did Jones and Obama expect? Thier reaction is akin to a football owner who just hired Bill Parcells to produce a Super Bowl caliber team being dumbfounded when Parcells begins going after high priced but talented free agents. Something isn't quite right.

And this wartime President seems to have a difficult time rooting for the home team. To us in fly-over country it appears that he could not leave his reflexive anti-Americanism in Hyde Park. One wonders how committed he is. And if the average Joe can sense this, is it any wonder that the average American is having problems rallying to the cause? What will occur politically if 2010 in Afghanistan becomes 2006 in Iraq?

Obviously the President's heart is with the Left, but he must have the independents to remain politically viable. His "move to the center" was purely a political move. But that begs the question, "What if 2010 in Afghanistan resembles 2006 in Iraq?" Will the President stand firm or will he flinch?

Mattled| 12.15.09 @ 7:51AM

Unfortunately, the author is dead on.

He made the cadets wait three hours in their seats for "security purposes" but yet another two events, you just had to wait twenty minutes in line (The Hollywood morons complained) and then we had the gate crashers.

He made the cadets wait to demoralize them. Show who's in charge---a man who loathes them. Then give a demoralizing speech with no passion or commitment.

When "he" fails in Afghanistan, he will say the military failed and can no longer be relied on to protect the country----enter Civilian National Security Force beholden to Obomoba.

L. Ross| 12.15.09 @ 11:49AM

Mattled:
I am not a fan of BHO. That said, as a former cadet at the Colorado School for Lost Boys, I can assure you it wasn't team Obama that had the cadets sitting bored to tears for 3 hours. That would have been the Academy officer corps. Trust me, they don't think of the cadets as people, and they certainly don't treat them like people.

I still hate that place.

Melvin| 12.15.09 @ 8:11AM

As Mattled allude to, He made the cadets wait to demoralize them. Show who's in charge." This is the exactly the same military leadership or lack of, that is being foisted upon the three Navy Seals who are being charged with Assault.
The Administration was livid that the Navy Seals shot and killed the Somali pirates and charging the three Seals with Assault is payback by Barrack Obama.
The Left constantly has to prove their military prowess by swinging their testicles above their heads like a bolo to show the world, "See, we are manly men."
This anti-military attitude is nothing different when Hillary Clinton had the White House Marine Honor Guard being food servers at a White House function, when Bill was President.

Mattled| 12.15.09 @ 8:25AM

If you read thru these, I don't belive you will find "Obama" in any of them:

http://www.military-quotes.com/mottos/USA.htm

He can try to demoralize all he wants. All he is doing is demoralizing against--himself.

Not God, Country or fellow man.

What will be the ultimate twist of irony is when he is going to really need them, they won't be there.

They will be defending their country.

Franklin| 12.15.09 @ 12:36PM

Yes, indeed! The military will always side with the American people. They have their Commander in Chief but they know who the C in C works FOR - the citizens.

Derek Leaberry| 12.15.09 @ 8:35AM

Neo-conservatives like Kristol, Kagan, Krauthammer and Brooks have a fetish with wars that they themselves don't fight it- they have white blue collars to do that. So they are all for Obama's decision to continue the misguided nation-building in the Middle East.

True blue conservatives are not fooled by Obama. He is evil and must be opposed at all times. His mission is to destroy the historic American nation. It is the duty of all conservatives to politically destroy Obama first.

Davide| 12.15.09 @ 8:55AM

Eric Damon| 12.15.09 @ 10:00AM

Obama didn't snooker anyone who didn't want to be snookered! Most of the praise of his Oslo speech is coming from people who want to be seen as centrist, and who want to find something to temper their criticism of Obama with. But even they know that Obama's rhetoric rarely matches his actions, and they also know that he is not a real warrrior....just a politician doing what is best for himself politically. Obama fooled no one at all here; he just bought himself a little time from people who were already seeking reasons to praise him.

JP| 12.15.09 @ 11:08AM

Eric,
You did hit on a poin. Even Krauthammer sets himself up to later be cornered. No one wishes to be labled as reflexively Right Wing. Noonan, Brooks, and Victor Davis Hanson do enjoy a degree of respect from the Left as not being Right Wing. This is probably for fianancial reasons as well as personal (no one likes to be called names).

I saw this a month or so ago at Charles Johnson's website, Little Green Footballs. Johnson praised Hanson as being "the right kind of conservative". And the comments of thread were filled with sychophantic praise by people who normally despise the kind essays Hanson usually writes. This isn't Victor Davis Hanson's fault; but, one wonder if it causes people like him to hold back as to not rock the boat too much.

President Obama, like you said, knows all of this. Like many, I believe his speech was directed at the likes of Krauthammer and Noonan. All the right words, but little substance. For independents who listen or read these people, Obama may appear to be moving to the center. The speech was intended to give Obama another 3 months or so breathing space.

What was missed by the MSM (intentionally of course) was the EPA Director's speech (or threat to Congress). The address was given the same day as the Oslo Speech. As with most Progressive's, it is best to watch the President's actions and not listen to his words.

Jeremiah| 12.15.09 @ 4:25PM

Well, I can't stand Noonan (used to love the humanity in her stuff - now she seems still in thrall to her snit about not obtaining a coveted administrative spot in W's administration in 2005 - and is full of bile and condescension for all her old allies).

Krauthammer, though, is one of the shrewdest columnists out there. Here's the think: conservatives are unlike leftists. They think fairness is important. If you just attack an opponent regardless of what he says, you lose your credibility with people who come to regard you as a reflexive 'anti'.

Krauthammer's praise is small and only for what is actually praiseworthy in the speech. If I were writing a column I would do the same for a couple reasons. First, in the forlorn hope it might encourage the opponent to come out of fantasyland grapple with reality a little more often. Second, it would to be to put in record what he said that was on the mark in order to come back to it when his actions either met or did not meet with his words.

I am no more persuaded than most of you that Obama means to get serious about our national security. However, I would not want to create a climate where he can do whatever he wants because he is going to be hammered by us even when he does a little of the right thing. And I want a record to show that we take policy seriously.

Now if George Bush had given that same speech, I would have been horrified, thinking "Good heavens, is he going wobbly on us?" It was not a great speech, by any means - rather mealy-mouthed and timid. But it was the first tentative step Obama has made in dealing with the world as it is rather than as he fantasizes it should be. And I dearly hope that many on the left are thinking, "Good Gaia, is he going wobbly on us?"

Doctor Right| 12.15.09 @ 10:07AM

Weak premise, weak article.

Snookered? Hardly. This Conservative could care less what Obama says anywhere, anytime. I never liked him, never trusted him, and never will on either point. He's a socialist, which means, basically, that he's a liar. No matter what he says, his agenda is:

More Government control, less freedom, and a poor economy.

If you think Conservatives are fooled by his Oslo speech, then you're a fool.

The fact that he may put one over on the RINOs in Congress, like the execrable John McCain, is another thing altogether.

Please don't confuse Conservatives with Republicans...It's a marriage of convenience, not of principle. And please...Don't confuse complete buffoons like David Brooks with either Conservatives or Republicans...He's neither.

And BTW...Fewer and fewer of the might "center" are fooled by Obama anymore, either...Thus his plummeting approval numbers.

Get a grip.

Al Adab| 12.15.09 @ 10:38AM

Judging this President by his words is a grave mistake. He perceives words as tools in a political agenda. He uses them to obfuscate and misdirect. Look to his works and dispair. There we can see the spirit which motivates this administration and Congress. Control and Power are their gods, we just should all shut up and take it. In their world, they know best and we are simply ignorant fools. That, dear friends, is not the government of America has so long enjoyed.

This leaves us the question of how to oppose our own government in order to retain or restore our Liberty.

Ret. Marine| 12.15.09 @ 8:06PM

Well I guess we should take a lesson out of the Mao mumblers script, just threaten them, tell them we have taken their birthday's away, take our toys and go home. Seems to work for them.

No, they did not fall for the ruse. What else could they do but praise him for taking the same position as they? There is plenty of room for some real dissent and it will show up soon. The crippling and deadly (for our troops) rules of engagement are going to be a national scandal that will hurt Obama in the very near future. Everything is tactical and this is no exception. The fury of the voters will be horrific next year. Obama did not make a shrewd and calculated tactical decision. He stupidly tried to mollify his base and his opponents at the same time, succeeding at neither.

Dan Phillips| 12.15.09 @ 3:55PM

There is no snookering about it. That a liberal internationalist like Obama would say things that neo"con" internationalists agree with is entirely understandable. Read this:

http://conservativetimes.org/?p=4059

The counterbalance to Obama's liberal internationalism is not neo"con" internationalism but conservative America First non-intervetionism.

martin j smith| 12.15.09 @ 4:26PM

Obama snookered those that wanted to be snookered. Also--which "conservatives " exactly were snookered ? They are not mentioned. One thing I will say: Obama stated the notion of the "just war". Waite till there is an attack on US interests or US soil gd forbid. Then what will he do then ? Don't let it be forgotten that Obama sees justification for war. Other than that--one hand clapping.

Dan Phillips| 12.15.09 @ 6:15PM

Martin, read the Glenn Greenwald piece that is being discussed in the link I supplied above and you will see which conservatives are celebrating. Again, they have not been snookered. They are recognizing Obama's stay the course internationalism for just what it is, stay the course internationalism. It is conservative non-interventionists that they fear as the true opposition, not their fellow internationalist Obama.
