The Obama Watch

What's Not Political About Health Care Reform?

It's not about him, the president said. But Meredith Vieira wasn't buying.

President Obama whined on "The Today Show" yesterday that politics was getting in the way of his noble effort to reform health care on behalf of the American people. To her credit, Meredith Vieira didn't buy it. And if Meredith Vieira doesn't buy it, Obama's got big problems.

Obama has always portrayed himself as the white knight riding to the rescue of the people. It's his heroic proposals vs. evil special interests. Period. He was at it again yesterday morning, but the veil of nobility is wearing so thin that even "Today Show" hosts can see through it.

When Vieira quoted Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., saying, ""If we are able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him," Obama saw his opening.

"All the previous questions you asked, that's the answer to," he said. "This is not about 'do we need a little more time to get this right, to be constructive, to talk to the policy analysts. This is all about politics. That describes exactly an attitude that we've gotta overcome. Because, what folks have in their minds is that somehow this is about me, it's about politics, and the ability to win back the House of Representatives. And people are thinking back to 1993 when President Clinton wasn't able to get health care, right after that the House Republicans won…"

At this point Vieira interrupted.

"But this is about politics, Mr. President. This is a key issue for you. You have a big stake in this. If this falls apart, that is not good for you."

Obama pulled his pensive stare-at-the-floor look, shook his head, and brought up "the people."

"Meredith, I, I, all I can say is that this is absolutely important to me. But this is not as important to me as it is to the people who don't have health care. I've got health care. This isn't as important to me as the family that's going bankrupt because they got a bunch of medical bills that they thought the insurance companies would cover. It turned out they weren't covered. So, yes, absolutely, I am deeply invested in getting this thing done. But this isn't Washington sport. This isn't about who's up and who's down. This is about solving an enormous problem for the American people."

It's all about the people! You'd think Obama was Zorro, he talks about "the people" so much.

Earlier in the interview, Vieira asked him why he set an August deadline for getting a health care bill passed through Congress. He actually said that it wasn't his deadline, it was the people's.

"The deadline's not being set by me. The deadline's being set by the American people."

You remember voting on that, don't you? Signing that petition to Congress to have health care reform passed by the August recess? Me neither.

Obama can pretend all he wants that only the other side is playing politics, but someone among the White House press corps ought to ask him this: Isn't proposing a government revision of 17 percent of the entire U.S. economy inherently political?

How is it that proposing massive government-initiated overhaul of the entire health care sector is not political, but opposing such a step is nothing but playing politics?

The president assumes that his rhetorical sleight-of-hand will get health care reform as he envisions it passed. But his assertions are transparently false. They are, in short, purely political. If Meredith Vieira can see that, the rest of the country can, too.

The President is to have another Prime Time Press Conference tonight it will be his 4th since taking office. NBC had to be leaned on by the WH to show. I can just imagine the millions of viewers changing channels. This will probably be the last time he will be able to get away with this.

The President is entitled to hold as many press conferences as he wants (I remember President Reagan did a few in 1981 to push his tax cuts); President Bush would have been better off holding a few more. However, this Health Care Bill wasn't crafted in the WH, but in the conference rooms fo the House. It is Pelosi's Waxman's, and Stenny Hoyer's bill. Like the Stimulus Bill, the WH outsourced the details of the Bill to Congress and Obama went cruise control. He did the same with Cap and Trade. His WH lost control of the two Bills from the outset. All that he provided was the subjective deadline and the Rose Garden for the signing ceromony.

In the meantime, Senate Majority Leader Reid is, as usual, attempting to use the Health Care Bill as a partisan weapon. Yesterday, in a press conference, he blamed the GOP Minority for the bill's delay. Someone needs to remind Reid that the GOP cannot stop anything, and that his own party locked the Republicans out of all negociations. It is his own Senate Caucus that is attempting to salvage both Health Care and Cap and Trade, but niether the House nor the WH are being any help. There are roughly some $2 trillion in new taxes, fees, and surcharges totaled in both bills, and a few perceptive Democratic Senators and House members realize that a) there will be a collective fit across the nation once these taxes take affect, and b)There is an election in 17 months and c)the economy is still shedding jobs and the Dems will be held responsible.

So, the President will hold his press conference, and most Americans will tune out. If currently polling is accurate, a large number of people who voted for him and took his word as governing from the middle are on to his game. Another slick speech won't do it.

This in fact could be Obama's Waterloo. His hubris, arrogance, and lack of legislative expirience is catching up,

Darin| 7.22.09 @ 7:23AM

If it's "really" about the people, than the thoughts of the people should be considered. The people should be informed of the pros and cons to help them make a wise decision. One key piece of information, the semi-annual budget report usually delivered in mid-July, is being delayed until mid-August. Yet Obama is pushing for the health care bill to be voted on BEFORE that key piece of information is released. Could it be because that report will show the budget, economy, and jobs are in far worse shape than we're being told? The August deadline is completely self-imposed. 85% of Americans have said they are happy with their current health care. This is merely a manufactured "crisis" with the underlying goal of obtaining more control over the population. It's blatantly political, and Obama knows it.

Meredith Vieira -----M.I.A. 2008 Presidential Election.

Sorry, not buying it. Where was she last year? 2007?

Hey Meredith, how about a little dumpster diving near Rezko's house? Rev Wright's? Bill Ayers?

Hey, what about his college transcripts?

Was he an Affirmative Action baby like the Wise Lie-Tina's?

Tune out yes----permanently.

Grzmlyk| 7.22.09 @ 8:46AM

If the MSM weren't so mesmerized by the Big Phony's tractor beam, I might tune in - you know, just in case an intrepid "reporter" asked him a real question.

No doubt, though, we'll get more softballs designed to shore up the canard of this presidency.

As Hillary once said, it takes a potemkin village.

Wouldn't it be pretty to think what it would be like if someone in the press broke away from the herd and actually put this goon's feet to the fire? Maybe did a little math?

Oh, happy day to see this posturing thug crack under just a taste of the withering fire every Republican president has endured daily.

When Obama's mask slips - and if the press turns on him it will be inevitable - the public will finally see the maggot-infested, rotting meat that is his true character.

But given the media's eternal crush on dictators, tonight will probably just be the same old tired choreography in 3:4 time: Fawn, two three, lie two three; fawn, two three, lie two three.

Mattled| 7.22.09 @ 9:05AM

Seriously; if you haven't gotten one, just one friend, neighbor, relative etc. to cancel their paper or stop watching network news, CNN, MSNBC then you haven't done enough.

I guilted one friend into canceling his local biased rag. He didn't think it was a big deal and he wanted to keep up with local news. I convinced him otherwise and he is now a WSJ subscriber.

Parents? Same thing. Fox News is where they get their info. No longer the CBS News.

Faster please.

Buh-Bye.

Howard| 7.22.09 @ 10:05AM

I dropped my subscription to the Boston Globe/Democrat. I tolerated it somewhat when they did some original reporting. But now it is full of wire service material. They still have the same uber liberal philosophy as Ted Kennedy and the rest of the Blue State gang. I believe most reasonable Americans have started to catch on to Obamas jive. His hyperbole and outsourcing of leadership to the Pelosi led Congress has turned off a lot of people. Let's hope this trend continues.

Tony in Central PA| 7.22.09 @ 10:28AM

Meredith Vieria ? Who knew ? The masterpiece of the whole interview was, " The deadline's not being set by me. Its being set by the American people " . Yep, he actually said that. Its right up there with " I am not a crook ", " Read my lips, no new taxes ", " I did not have sexual relations with that woman ".

Tim| 7.22.09 @ 10:38AM

Exposing this man's fraud has taken less time than the pulling back of the famous 1939 curtain that uncovered and exposed the fraud of the so called Great and Powerful Oz.

Talk about the "Sand Box" chronicles.
My oh My what a mess!

BD57| 7.22.09 @ 10:40AM

Andrew:

I hope you're right ... I fear you're not.

Clinton won in '92 largely because he convinced people there was no risk involved in electing him - over and over again I heard "it couldn't get any worse if we give this guy a shot."

Well, that's a big part of the Obots sales pitch here - "health care is a mess and it couldn't get any worse, so let's give this a shot."

Opponents have two tasks: #1, convince people it COULD get worse; and, #2, talk alternatives to what the Obots are selling that could make things better.

Both are necessary to take Obama's "plan" down - to the extent Obama claim there's an absence of the latter, it reinforces the "it couldn't get any worse" mantra.

Richard Baker| 7.22.09 @ 10:45AM

The Poor Kenyan. Now he can't vote "Present" or claim that it's above his pay grade. For the first time in his life he's being held accountable and he DOESN'T like it. Oh my oh my, what will he do?

copilot| 7.22.09 @ 11:08AM

Why was Ted Knighted by QEII ? Because MI5 knows about the 1.5 million candlepower searchlight off a Huey that was set up at eye level on that bridge. When he tried to cross they hit the switch. Cops found telltale marks and noted a rapid boat departure just afterwards - light and battery cart probably pitched over the side. Suspect? E Howard Hunt. Also the small barometric bomb slipped in the luggage compartment of Ted's plane killing 2 and breaking Ted's back. MI5 also knows that what happened to JFK jr. was NOT an accident. A lot of people are now finding out about that - including Obama and Holder.

Gill O’Teen ✝✡| 7.22.09 @ 11:09AM

Tim, as I recall the Great and Powerful Oz, a snake oil salesman of the first order, fulfilled the Tin Man’s desire to have a heart by giving the bold wood chopper a watch. The watch ticked just like the beat of a heart. I certainly hope obumahcare will provide more than a dime store timepiece to those of us with grave illnesses counting the months until our next doctor visit.

Richard Baker, well the Kenyan-in-charge could try keeping his campaign promises about no pork in his bills, posting proposed legislation before letting it come to a vote so that citizens could actually read it and comment before its crammed down their throats, having a competent and ethical cabinet. He could even ask his con-gressional remoras to read a bill before voting on it. I could go on. I’d suggest he retire, but then we’re stuck with oh-no joe.

Marc Jeric| 7.22.09 @ 11:39AM

Well - Clinton won two elections because of that empty non-entity - what's his name - I forget, who drew 17% of the votes from that wimp Bush the First. Tonight we will be privileged to observe the Julius Caesar-like smirk on the face of Abu Hussein from Kenya, our Community Organizer-in-Chief, telling us what is good for us - the uneducated "racaille" in thrall to those Republican nay-sayers and nincopoops. And his ACORN brownshirts will applaud, together with all those revolutionary marxists employed by the MSM.

Al Adab| 7.22.09 @ 11:42AM

Gill,
This health care program is in fact snake oil nothing less. It is being sold to the citizens as a solution to a created problem that exists only in the minds of statists.
Simply put the entire purpose is to increase government control over the lives and property of Americans. Wait untill under these auspices the national governmant starts dictating our diets, habits and lifestyle. Those who lives exist at the sufferance of others are nothing less than slaves.

aunt gertrude| 7.22.09 @ 11:53AM

Not to worry, Ms. Meredith probably made it up to him later with a Monica in the green room.

This doesn't entirely redeem the lovely Ms. Vieira for her previous shilling on behalf of the Hive; but her cutting through Il Dufe's line of BS (which I think stands for "Balderdash for Statism"), I almost thinking of fantasizing about her again.

Appleby| 7.22.09 @ 12:32PM

I live in Kanukistan and am bombarding my family and friends with articles from our local paper that tell of people who had to be airlifted or transported by road to the USA to get a fractured leg fixed after 127 doctors and hospitals turned her down ... and the preemie baby who was airlifted to Buffalo because there was not a single bed in Canada for it, leaving its parents, who had no passports (and whose father's criminal record means he's not getting one either), home in Canada.

Our system here is a disaster save for catastrophic matters -- one suspects that if it had been strictly limited to catastrophic coverage in the first place, it might have prospered. But now you wait 15 hours in the ER behind Mrs. Mohammed and her 12 children who have the sniffles and want their freebie, to find out if the sudden black eye you developed is something that may damage your vision.

And when I was at the audiologist I heard the receptionist tell a patient, with the Canadian Shrug, that either he could wait for his MRI until October (this was in March) or go to the States and pay for it himself.

What will Canadians do when there's no States for them to go to at any price?

Die. That's what. And so will you.

Keep your powder dry, this battle is far from over. The One , his party and his minions in the press will not easily be defeated. We must continue to call Blue Dogs every day to keep the pressure on, they must fear the electorate more than their Party or the One.
He and they will do anything and everything to win. The press have so tied their fortunes to him that they cannot afford to let him fail.
To win it is incumbent on each of us to call our own congressmen and senators, to call the committee members and in particular the Blue dogs. In addition we need to convince everyone we know and come in contact with to do the same. Philip Klein’s article yesterday has excellent information to use in this regard.
Recall what we have seen of the ‘Chicago Way’ and understand this is a no holds barred bare knuckle fight; they will not stop until the very last second of their terms. Recall Clinton’s pardons on midnight of his last day. Do not underestimate them; do not give them the victory by claiming the success too soon.
We must be the backbone that gives conservatives and moderates of both parties the resolve to resist dangerous expansion of government control.

Roger Kress| 7.22.09 @ 4:32PM

The only way “We the People” can effectively stop the insanity of this government is to stop the life blood that keeps it going. That is, the cash they are stealing from us. Government cannot and will not heal itself. The one force, which still holds the power in this country that can do it, is “We the People”. But, that power is being taken away daily and it won't be long before we no longer have the power of “We the People”.

I believe the time has past for talk and symbolic protests like the Tea Parties. Although they are a start, we need to mobilize a real effort to stem the tide of socialism that is being thrust upon us. The socialized liberals are not talking and making symbolic gestures, they are stealing our freedoms and making laws at an alarming rate. If we truly believe in the Constitution and in the fight our forefathers fought to give this country it's Freedom and Liberty than we must not be complacent, or any less aggressive at preserving those rights then they were. If we don't act with the same determination our forefathers did, than we disgrace them and make null all they fought and died for. We cannot and must not let that happen! We will be held accountable by future generations. What will we say when our grand kids and great grand kids ask the question! Why did you let this happen? You saw what was happening and did nothing to stop it.

The Boston Tea Party was not a symbolic activity! It was a revolution where by the American people said we would rather throw our goods into the harbor, and not sell them, rather than sell them and have to pay taxes to an oppressive government, thus cutting off the life blood. Even though it meant they would sacrifice income to support themselves. That is the kind of belief, bravery and tenacity it took to stop the tyranny then, and it will take no less effort and fortitude to stop it today.

I believe we need to cut off the governments source of power by withholding taxes, and there is a way it can be done without the government being able to stop it. Like our forefathers knew, the government cannot force us to open our business. They cannot put us in jail for not selling our products in effect throwing them into the harbor.

It has been said over and over that small businesses in this country are its backbone. If that's true, it's time to get America’s backbone back. We have been treated like the assholes long enough. We don't even need a majority to accomplish this task. Can you imagine if we could rally 100,000 small businesses in this country to close their doors every Monday? How about 500,000? No sales tax, no income tax, no payroll tax, no VAT and on and on. If Monday doesn't get their attention then Monday and Tuesday? And so on. Even 50,000 would make a huge impact. This would be the kind of movement our forefathers would have made. This is the kind of belief and fortitude that our forefathers and the future generations would be proud of. This is the kind of tenacity that made America Great!

I have been trying to get people to understand the power we have as Americans when work together as a team. T.E.A.M.
meaning T.ogether E.veryone A.chieves M.ore!

We need a T.E.A.M America!!!!!!!

We must regain our position as the backbone of this once great nation or forever be it's asshole.

I remember this great story about who needs to be the boss:
When the body was first made, all the parts wanted to be the boss.

The brain said, "since I control everything and do all the thinking, I should be the boss."

The feet said, "since I carry man where he wants to go and get him in position to do what the brain wants, then I should be the boss."

The hands said, "since I must do all the work and earn all the money to keep the rest of you going, I should be the boss."

And so it went with the eyes, the heart, the lungs, and all the other parts of the body, each giving the reason why they should be the boss.

Finally, the asshole spoke up and said it was going to be the boss.

All the other parts laughed and laughed at the idea of the asshole being the boss. The asshole got so angry that he blocked himself off and refused to function.

Soon the brain was feverish and could barely think, the feet felt like lead weights and was almost too weak to drag the body anywhere, the eyes grew bleary, and the hands hung useless at the sides. All pleaded with the brain to let the asshole be declared the boss.

As the great philosopher Hillel wrote: If not now when, if not us who?

I am but one small person who is trying to inspire us to greatness for the good of our Nation.
If we believe in the Constitution, Freedom, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness, which is, what our forefathers fought and died for, then we owe it to them, and to the future generations, to stand up boldly, and say enough is enough. Every day we stand in complacency, every day we try to send a symbolic message, every day we try to fight this battle on their turf we lose. We lose credibility and freedoms. Government will never heal itself; only We the People can stop this insanity.

I pray there are still enough Americans left (on the right) that are willing to fight on the side of Freedom, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness in the country, and save it from this tyranny. Please! Help me get the word out for real Americans to once again be part of the great T.E.A.M. America!
In the words written by General John Stark, July 31, 1809

"Live Free or Die,"
God Bless you and God Bless America! I am,

Very Truly Yours,
Roger J. Kress

"But this is not as important to me as it is to the people who don't have health care." Who, in America, is denied access to health care? they way Obama phrases it, there are people dying because they don't have insurance, but that's just not true. Anyone can walk into any hospital and receive health care without any insurance and despite their inability to pay for treatment.. That's been a federal law for decades. So, just who is Obama talking about? He's sure not talking about anyone in America.

Isn't proposing a government revision of 17 percent of the entire U.S. economy inherently political?

Where did you get that figure? Your ass? How is your ass feeling? It must have some pretty nasty hemorrhoids telling it lies. But I forgive you, you're a republican, it's only natural for you guys, working construction all day and making awesome fantasy lives for yourselves where you're all millionaires and all that stuff. Stop the taxes on millionaires! Man, I love imagining I am a millionaire, and have a speed boat, and lots of coke, and whores, and I don't want that fantasy spoiled by taxes, goddammit!

Really...the people's deadline? Is that why representatives are getting calls 15 to 1 in stopping this train wreck? 15 to 1! No this has nothing to do with "the people". And if the health care is so great that they don't have to discuss all that is being proposed why won't he take the same health care as everyone else? Wake up America! It's because it's substandard insurance. Health care will become rationed and a person may not even qualify for what they need...like the unborn, disabled and elderly. I pray that Americans would wake up to this socialist president and his agenda.
