The Obama Watch

Hopelessly Naive

That's the kind interpretation.

It didn't take long for Iran to brush aside President Obama's holiday video.

In his video message to Iran, complete with Farsi subtitles and timed to coincide with the celebration of the Persian New Year, Obama praised the "true greatness of the Iranian people and civilization" and said that the United States wanted to engage Iran and reverse decades of animosity.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dismissed the overture the next morning. "They chant the slogan of change but no change is seen in practice," said Khamenei, sounding not unlike some of Obama's disillusioned supporters in the United States.

"We haven't seen any change," replied Khamenei. "If you are right that change has come, where is that change? What is the sign of that change? Make it clear for us what has changed."

Bush-basher Michael Moore might well say the same words. What's changed since the days of Bush and Cheney when it was charged that too big a piece of the pie was being grabbed by those who already have too much?

Obama told Joe the plumber that he wanted to "spread the wealth around." True to his word, Obama has done the spreading in record time and in unprecedented amounts. The only problem for guys like Moore is that the trillions have been flowing for the past two months in exactly the opposite direction of the "change" that Obama promised in his big stadium speeches during the campaign.

No one chanting "Yes we can" was pushing for a change that would stick America's middle class taxpayers with additional trillions of new debt in order to fill up the coffers of some of the biggest and richest swindlers on Wall Street.

Where's the change, in short, between Bush's TARP-1 and Obama's TARP-2?

Khamenei, similarly, pointed to the lack of change in responding to Obama's video: "Have you released Iranian assets? Have you lifted oppressive sanctions? Have you given up mudslinging and making accusations against the great Iranian nation and its officials? Have you given up your unconditional support for the Zionist regime? Even the language remains unchanged."

Obama kicked off his video overture to Iran's leadership by praising "the great and celebrated culture" of Iran, a culture that "made the world a better and more beautiful place." As Khamenei delivered his reply to Obama, the crowd around him in the better and beautiful place chanted "Death to America."

Khamenei could have additionally asked where the change was in Obama's decision to send an additional 17,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan by May, increasing the number of American troops in Afghanistan to 55,000, while keeping 50,000 American troops in Iraq. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cindy Sheehan jumping the White House fence and pulling the arugula out of Michelle's new vegetable garden.

Regarding Obama's budget proposal and his big-government schemes to boost the U.S. economy, the president of the European Union, Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, warned last week that Obama's strategy of spending his way out of recession is a "road to hell."

Obama's banking bailouts, massive stimulus packages and proposed deficit increases, cautioned Topolanek, will weaken and destabilize the entire financial system of the world economy.

"Americans will need liquidity to finance all their measures and they will balance this with the sale of their bonds but this will undermine the liquidity of the global financial market," warned Topolanek.

Two days earlier, Zhou Xiaochuan, the head of China's central bank, called for the creation of a new international currency reserve to replace the U.S. dollar. China, currently holding over $1 trillion in U.S. Treasuries and other dollar-dominated bonds, is concerned about the real, adjusted for inflation, value of those assets.

I wonder if The Pres could define what the "true greatness of the Iranian people and civilization" actually is? That can make a damn fine rug, but other than that, what? I guess they are REALLY good at community organizing. Huh, I guess I answered my own question. That would impress "The One" now wouldn't it.

drudge ette obama| 3.30.09 @ 6:34AM

It is transparently obvious that Obama was palying the psychological game of complimenting the people and culture, but condemning the governors. Even a caveman could see through this. An the Iranians did.

How is this any different than "respecting the troops but condemning the war"?

Obama swore to uphold the Constitution because he had to to get the job. Since then, it's been one antiConstitutional act after another. How can a lawyer support ex post facto/bills of attainder? I will tell you, it is the same kind that is a member of a nation of men, not a nation of laws.

Remember this, the Iranians are complicit in their governance. It takes patriots to lose their lives for freedom. It takes patriots to be willing to lose their lives for freedom. It takes people desirous of freedom to do anything necessary to lose their lives for freedom. I see little of that metal in Iran. And I see none of it in the Obama administration.

The Date: 2012, looms larger, and larger, with each passing day. The naivatte of this IDIOT. The buffoonery of his Administration. These guys, with the towels on their heads, can spot a 'WEAK HORSE' a mile away. And they've clearly spotted one, in this clown. We're CUTTING Defence Spending, even as RUSSIA and CHINA increase their own. Even as IRAN moves foreward with their Nuclear Ambitions. North Korea is rattling, again. Pakistan is about to go up in flames. And this JOKE, this PRETENDER, this BAD ACTOR, who sits in the White House, thinks that NOW, is a good time to CUT our DEFENCE BUDGET. I guess it's cheaper to just pucker up, and kiss the Bad Guys' backside. Democrats have always been good at THAT. GOD help us.

Dave Mathews epitomises today's America, Ain't nuttin werth fitin fer mentality. I got my Ipod and MTV. Liberals are abject cowards

Jay| 3.30.09 @ 7:43AM

This has been until now a forum where the liberals feel secure intrying to put forth some sort of logical justification for penalizing working people to support those who won't work; the increased government control over our daily lives, and the relentless attacks on our written-in- black-and-white constitutional rights.

Mr. Matthews, either say something worth reading or go back to Moveon.org where name calling passes for intellect.

Obama's has driven the last nail into the coffin of G.M. and Chyrsler. No one will buy those vehicles now, even though the government claims they will insure the warranties. Ford was smart not to take the money. The money was tied to Obama and he's a certifiable pathological liar.

The part I don't understand about Mr. Mathews' politics is "Let them die. I won't mourn for the auto industry. "

The auto industry is going to do just fine. That auto industry has names such as Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru) and the like. These car companies make cars in American factories employing American workers and use parts from American suppliers. These companies have foreign-language names, but they are multi-national concerns much as GM, Ford, and Chrysler.

No, the auto industry or even the American auto industry if there is such a thing is not going away anytime soon. What is on the way out is the union auto industry.

The loss of union jobs is very much on the agenda of President Obama, who was known to drive a Chrysler 300 in his Senate days, a union-made luxury-performance car, and I might add, a sensible choice for a person in public life who supports the labor movement.

President Obama is also working to save GM and Chrysler, contrary to Mr. Mathews' sentiment that these companies should or must pass on. Whether Mr. Mathews supports the President is something on which I am not certain.

The dye has been cast for America.

Obama has chosen the exact wrong prescription for our failing economy.

Rather than limit government and let the private economy grow us out of the mess created by government corruption of the mortgage/real estate markets, our illustrious POTUS is growing government and draining wealth out of the private economy. The resulting debt from Obama's boondoggle "stimulus" and totally irresponsible budget will be paid down with inflated (i.e. worth less) dollars. Inflation will further erode our standard of living.

Our foreign policy is already being consumed by these amazingly bad decisions. Our national defense will be hollowed out in a desperate effort to cut "waste" without angering federal, state, and local government employee unions. America is a paper tiger in the making.

Look to California as an augur of what's next: bloated bureaucracies, out of control spending, corrupt compacts between legislatures and government unions, the failure of private enterprise, expanding welfare rolls, increased crime, illegitimacy, and death rates, especially in the already blighted urban areas.

Amazing, isn't it? After only three months, we have a Failed Adminsitration.

What else could one expect from a shiftless community organizer who matriculated from the vile, primordial ooze of corrupt, left-wing Chicago politics?

David Mathews| 3.30.09 @ 10:11AM

Warpublican| 3.30.09 @ 10:13AM

The right wing are really idiots. Does Reiland actually believe that Obama hoped for reformation in iran or ditching nuclear hopes based on a video? Reiland - who probably cheered for the last administration - the "realists" who did nothing as North Korea exploded a nuclear weapon and iran got within inches of nuclear weapons - and yet here we have an administration that attempts reconciliation, diplomacy and outreach. The iranian rejection was to be expected - and I'm sure Obama expected it. But Reiland acts as if diplomacy somehow mitigates our incredible nuclear inventory and masive millitary - guess what Ralph - our killing power is still there - and you may get your dead Muslims yet, but at least Obama will have diplomatic cover when/if he decides that iran must go...

David Mathews| 3.30.09 @ 10:16AM

Hello Indiana,

* "What do you expect from an administration that suggests that climate change is one of the biggest threats to our national security. "

Since conservatives cannot comprehend science it would take a great deal of effort to explain how climate change poses a mortal threat to the survival of our civilization.

Conservatives are more worried about angels and demons than science, though. Gotta keep your god happy, ya know!

David Mathews| 3.30.09 @ 10:20AM

Hello Paul,

* "The auto industry is going to do just fine. "

This is simply wrong, Paul. The auto industry isn't fine at all. The Internal Combustion Engine is a technology nearing its extinction. There's no future for the auto industry regardless of the name attached to the business.

At some point in the 21st century the auto industry will be completely dead & extinct. The automobile will soon join other dead technologies into oblivion.

I support the President but I have no sympathy whatsever for the American auto industry. Pull the plug now and let it die. Any industry which grew fat and lazy off of the SUV craze should not exist.

David Mathews| 3.30.09 @ 2:44PM

Hello stmich,

* "If you consider defeating the enemy 'advocating violence'...well, do you have any relatives who fought in World War II? 'Advocating violence' against the Nazi regime?"

World War I and World War II demonstrated that Christian Europeans are the most violent people on the planet ... a fact attested to by the behavior of Christian Europeans during all the centuries prior.

Christians were slaughtering Jews long before Hitler was born. There's a reason why Europe looked away while Hitler was committing the Holocaust. The Europeans weren't necessarily opposed to genocide.

Ever wonder why the Catholic church was silent when all of these things were happening? Care to guess?

* "Which 'Christian fundamentalists' advocate head removal of journalists, bombing of Israeli pizza parlors, flying planes into buildings, gassing Kurdish populations, mowing down the 'marsh people', and on and on? "

Christian fundamentalists engage in fire bombing campaigns which killed non-combatant citizens by the 100,000 during World War II in Dresden and Tokyo, etc.

Christian fundamentalists also dropped the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These same Christians threatened to drop bombs anywhere else they wished until the Soviets built a bomb and both sides threatened humankind with the insanity of Mutually Assurred Destruction.

A century ago, Christian fundamentalists enslaved the Africans, deprived them of human rights and killed them like cattle. Christian fundamentalists also committed genocide against the Native Americans, exterminating entire tribes in order to steal their land and resources.

That's what Christians do.

David Mathews| 3.30.09 @ 2:46PM

Hello Stan,

* "Ask any PERSIAN if they like being called Iranian. I was especially surprised Obama actually used Farsi subtitles rather then Arabic in his video. "

1. Farsi is the native language of the Iranians.
2. The Iranians are Persians, not Arabs.

Conservatives really need to become educated. They are as ignorant of other cultures as they are ignorant of science.

David Mathews| 3.30.09 @ 2:50PM

Hello Big Leo,

* "Yeah, I remember when the Baptists drove those church buses into the UN building. Boom! "

No, Dustoff, the Christians killed each other at a tremendous rate using the latest technologies during the Civil War. That's how the Christians killed 600,000 of their fellow Christians ...

They also terrorized the African Americans for a century afterwards. They killed and terrorized for the sake of oppression and mob rule and lynching.

These same Christians dropped a nuclear bomb on a church (!) in Nagasaki, slaughtering Japan's native Christian population in one massive crime against humanity.

After reading DM's anti Christian fundamentalism rap, can anyone doubt that we're talking about a mental health problem ? His yearning for the total collapse of civilization shows us not a liberal, but a nihilist. His conflation of all European civilization into Christian fundamentalization and his demonization of the same confirms this, and adds a pathetic strain of self-hatred to the mix.

By the way, when Stan remarked on the Prez using Farsi, he was implying that the Prez thought the Iranians were Arabic, not that Stan did. You need some remedial reading work, Mr. Science.

Historically speaking, all civilization's collapse. If you don't like that ... too bad! You can only spend so much time arguing with reality before reality does whatever it wishes.

* "is conflation of all European civilization into Christian fundamentalization and his demonization of the same confirms this, and adds a pathetic strain of self-hatred to the mix. "

They ran three stories on it. The next year had an unusually high amount of snow unusually early. They ran one article about 'unusual weather patterns' being the result of global warming.

What is more likely is that the reality of even the most rudimentary carbon tax putting a real pinch on people's wallets will reduce enthusiasm for AGW theories. Not everyone skis at St. Moritz, but everyone goes shopping.

And regards these two Kings. Meaning Bush & Blair. Their hearts will be inclined to do what is bad, and at one table a lie is what they will keep speaking. This lie is the 9/11. But nothing will succeed, because the end is not yet.

The lie of 9/11, then the WMD, then the war on Terror, then the lie about Iran to satrt another War, then there is the Afghanistan war, another lie, Then there is the Globalwarming, lie, then there is the other lie of the Banking system, the lie about the Bailout system. The One world government fraud, the one world Religion, and the Aids scam, that they invented in the labs, then there is going to be the Bird flu. Then there is the one world currency, the mark of the beast, then the all body Boils, then all fish die in the sea due to pollution. The Sun is getting hotter and will cause skin cancer, and melt the Ice caps, they call it Globalwarming, to make money.
